Uses a ton of examples! Explains topics clearly. Tests fairly.
Very helpful and willing to work with you
loves what he does, not a fly by course (psy 101), requires a lot of studying
Makes think about theory
Knew the subject area very well. Provided many helpful examples!
He is not friendly to all of his students!!!!!!
Nice guy. Class is very hard. Really must study a lot
Very organized and willing to work with students
Really basic stuff for a 400 level course. Not conceptually challenging.
Very smart guy. he expects a lot from his students, but gives a lot too.
By the time that I graduate,I'll have had every teacher @GVSU. He's my favorite.
Good teacher, makes you think, you will learn if you are there.
I would recommend him to anyone...really tries to make the class comfortable

Very good professor. Can be hard at times. Awesome class!
I could tell he didn't like me
makes the class fun. not too hard, just be prepared for work outside of class.
awesome instructor - very fair and very informative
very stimulating and well worth the effort that you will need to pass. Cute too
Tests are difficult, but he is an awesome prof.
Interesting course, easy exams. Overall, a nice guy.

good prof really cares about his students (but wears his pants too high :)
such a cutie! awesome prof, really cares about his students!!!!
Very personable. Good at engaging the class.
An Outstanding Professor! Very helpful and interesting. Tuff but fair.
dude, this guy is awesome, just do the assigments and you'll love it/ great guy
WOW! What a prof. Most interesting yet in college. Makes you want to come!!!
Very abstract style. Fun & Caring. Be prepared to think.
This guy was cool, really nice and respectful. Really happy guy
hard tests-- do the projects and have support --do the reading and go to class
Easy Exams, Grades Projects Hard. But He's Rude, Thinks he's God & Self-loving
Worst Prof @GVSU, he doesn't care about his students- enjoys our failure!!!
Willing to help students but a little iffy

Very nice guy Very helpful if you need it.
richard simons? doesnt really care what students think, egotistical
Great prof, helpful, caring and genuinly concerned with students wellbeing!
Lecture is easy, but exams are hard. You have to apply what you know. TOUGH!
A lot of work! Quizzes, projects, and tests. Only learned from the book.
You only get out of a class what you put in! ready for discussion if you are
Hard but very Fair. Wants people to do well. Great Guy!
trys to get to know each student, nice guy, tests are hard but class is worth it
great prof. interesting. covers too much material at once though
Pretty easy class. Read the material, study for exams, and you'll be ok.
Lectures are boring and test are impossible!
Great Professor and great class, why doesn' GVSU have more courses like this one
hard class, hard tests, Prof is helpful, but goes thru material fast
incredibly nice guy, learns your name, very helpful, easy readings & fair tests
Awful, i hated it, lectures were pointless, the tests impossible, class avg C
I loved this class! It's a lot of fun, but you learn a lot!
Wants you to learn. Cares about people. Great Prof.
Knows alot about Psy but somewhat difficult for a Gen Ed
Talks like a DR (i.e. a cold isnt just a cold its some long scientific name. Does not try to help, just kinda pushes you out the door when you really need his help. Great sense of humor and good stories. Thats all I can really say about the class.
Good guy, good sence of humor. First essay is unclear, he doesn't give good direction for it. Not the hardest class I've had, but not the easiest. Study and don't procrastinate.
He is a great prof. and funny guy! His tests are very hard and covers some stuff that isn't even covered in the book, lecture notes, and videos. The class is alright though. Papers a little unclear.
He is so boring and always uses overheads, nothing else!
The test are very striaght forward. Not very challenging but decently hard. Make sure you e-mail him at LEAST 3 time, worth the grade.

I also was encouraged to come by his office for help. Everytime he tries to push you out quickly as possible. The class was good, encourages questions. Just dont expect help outside of the class
He talks fast... but he DOES care about his students and is willing to help. Lectures can be long, but the class is interesting. Show up, take notes, read summaries and bold words and you'll do fine. He is VERY enthusiastic!
I really liked this class. Tests aren't bad as long as you read the chapters and go to class everyday. Lectures sometimes drone on, but overall, I recommmend.
I really liked this class. Tests aren't too bad but you need to read the book and come to class every day in order to get an "A". I'd recommend.
He is a great Prof. and very enthusiastic about what he does! He really encourages class participation and cares about his students.
Very helpful and extremely nice. Take him for 101 because he explains well.
kinda creepy, i hate seeing him outside of class.
I thought he kept everyones attention very well, the videos are awesome and I personally loved this class.
Test are hard because you pretty much have to know EVERYTHING ever read/talked about in class. But he is enthusiastic and seems to care about student's progress. Journal projects are kinda cool.
This course was very interesting. Dr. Burns is a very nice guy, and an awesome professor. If you are a psych major, I recommend taking this class. Even if you are not a psych major, the class is beneficial. Read, study, do assignments, participate and
Pros: Good prof, cares about students alot. class was intersting. Read chapters/study guide & you'll do great. Journal projects are cool. Cons: tons of writing, should be an SWS class.
he is a very nice professor, for having a psychology majoy i intend to take more of his classes, take his class because he really cares about his students and their performance in class. He is caring and very helpful! enjoy his class!!
great!
Best professor of first semester at GVSU. The only class i didnt skip all semester - he makes class interesting. Took as a gen ed, but made me consider a psy major.
Tests straight from lectures. Journals have unclear expectations. Nice guy. Skips around a lot, don't feel like I've learned anything in the class but the grade doesn't show it.
Class is a waste of time. Stay home and memorize the chapters instead! Seriously. Journal project is fun, but hard to know what he is looking for. Got an B and worked really hard for it....
Great class! Theory is not that interesting but he did a great job during lectures keeping you interested. You do have to attend lectures and read to pass this class. He was a great prof! Take him!
lectures were scattered, tests too. Journals interesting but took a lot of outside work, the more I made them up the better my grade. Class attendance virtually pointless, just read the book and you'll do fine
This guy is very funny and hot--too bad he isn't 20 years younger! He really loves what he teaches and uses lots of real life examples. His notes are a bit scattered and he does talk really fast. Just read the book and write good papers and you'll do fine.
All you have to do is read the book and do the outside papers and you will have a great grade. His review sheet is pointless, just know what's in the book and you will do fine.
The class is a lot of work, but you learn a ton. You get at the core of psychology and discuss the relevant issues in the field (finally!) You master the skill of intelligently reading journal articles(the required reading). There's no lectures, just discussion. Students take turns bringing in lunch
Very intelligent man, doesn't really teach the course that well. He's nice enough but he knows he is smart and gets mad when you don't know what he's talking about. Talks too fast, tests are not fun but papers are easy enough.
He is a VERY nice and VERY intelligent man -- but I feel like the niceness is a facade. You could get hit by a car while going to your mom's funeral and he still wouldn't let you turn your paper in an hour after class... No real sympathy and lots of work.
I expected him to accept stuff after the deadline too. I even told him I never had a problem like this in HS. Then he said their were "prinicples blah blah blah". He should be fair cuz students deserve full credit.
This was the best class I have ever taken in all of my schooling years. So he doesn't hold people's hands throughout the class... it's not his job. He is a very smart man, and not the easiest teacher, but you actually walk away feeling as if you got your money's worth after the class is over.
great teaacher, really kind, intelligent, funny, and well rounded. class wasn't the MOST interesting stuff but he made it fun and as interesting as he posisbly could (i think), the work was totally fair for a 400 level class and his grading and testing were just as fair, I DEFINATELY recomend him!
This prof is extremly intelligent and I sometimes think that he forgets that we're undergrads. However, it isn't his job to hold your hand and if you read and pay attention in class, you'll do fine.
Friendliest professor I've ever had at GVSU. Very kind and helpful. His intelligence makes lectures confusing, but they aren't really on the exams. Reading and understanding the book is enough. Papers are very thought-provoking and applicable to our personal lives. Interesting assignments, exams ok.
Didn't understand a thing he said in class. Talked TOO fast
Very interesting class and very interesting man. I enjoyed the class just do your reading and study a bit for the test. Very helpful. Talks a bit fast though.
lectures go basically right along with the text--read and you will do fine. he tries very hard to make class interesting and relatable. i liked his class a lot!
Mumbles and talks too fast at times, making it hard to follow the discussion. Not much direction on what he wants from the papers. Exams are fairly easy, he gives a study guide if you follow that you should do well. Lectures can drag..avg grades from the class were about B-/C+.
This class was really interesting and fun. Some of the readings were boring (and long!) but class discussion was great. All psych majors should take him for capstone!
One of the best psychology professors i've ever had, very helpful and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students and makes sure you understand what you are being taught.
If you study, you will get at least a B+... If you really memorize the book it's an A- quiete simple. He is a nice guy, very intuitive to students and good for those going into clinical psychology because he has such a background in it that you'll have good in context examples.
This was a great class. He had a lot of energy, he knew what he was talking about, cared about students and their progress, and he's very friendly. He has a clinical background, so that can be very helpful. I would definitely recommend him.
Prof. Burns is the greatest! He's quite the talker, but is truly willing to help any student outside or even during classtime. Psych majors should definitely take this professor before graduating.
There is a lot of reading and writing, but an overall good class. Probably the best capstone professor to take. He wants YOU to have a nice day.
Speaks really quicky but is also very conscious of his students. Fiercly intelligent and I found him to be rather funny. One of my favorite professors.
not going to lie this was probably the hardest class ive ever taken at gvsu but soooo worth it. be PREPARED to work and do homework A LOT. i wouldnt recommend any other capstone professor. i havent learned so much from one professor in any other class.
Very well-read, has a clinical background from which he draws many relevant stories to help facilitate class discussions. He does tend to talk a little fast, but it's nothing that can't be followed. His tests are pretty simple, all multiple choice. His study guides doesn't cover everything in test though, be prepared for some very hard questions!
I can see how some might find this class appealing due to the class discussions and lack of objective, multiple choice testing. I, however, don't feel as though I learned much. All you do in class is listen to your classmates share anecdotes of how the readings relate to their lives and while it may be interesting, it is not very educational.
Lots of reading and lots of writing. And I am talking about a TON. Be prepared to devote a good amount of time on this class. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the class. Great professor, I would highly recommend to those serious studious students who put forth a lot of effort. Not an easy A at all!
There is no text book, however you need to print a ton of articles that you must read. It's a lot of wasted paper. You must write TONS of papers. This class is A LOT of work. He is nice, but if you dont want to write 90+ pages through the semester dont take it. The exams are in class essays. More WRITING! Class participation is a MUST! Not my choice
What a few others were saying takes the words out of my mouth. TONS OF READING A WRITING. He talks fast and class is nothing but a discussion, which can be BORING. It's not an easy A, you must devote a buttload of time to it. I think he's the best out of all the capstone profs though. Trying to be philosophical got old really fast.
I am so disappointed. I was always told how exciting this class was, and I apparently chose the wrong professor. So nice, but the articles are terribly boring and offer no exciting dialog whatsoever. When I say boring, I mean I can barely stay awake for page one. He thinks a controversial topic is statistical methods. Be prepared.
Yes, this class is hard, but it's manageable AND YOU ARE IN COLLEGE! I had Galen for this class and failed it and took Burns' and have done really well. This is my 3rd class with Burns. Don't listen to other people. He is a fantastic prof. You just have to be willing to work hard. He is not biased and is open to views. He's not a jerk either.
I thought this class was easy but then again I have taken it before. His exams are multiple choice, has a paper, and some quizzes. He's a fantastic professor and make it interesting. He does talk fast, but you get used to it.
Yes, it's a hard class, but it teaches you to think about things in a different way. There is a lot of reading, but come on, it is college. College is not meant to be easy. I highly recommend Burns. In the spring semester we had 8 topics of a bunch of journal articles, exams, and were graded on questions and participation.
Difficulty: High - Homework: 1 paper/week - Exams: All MC. Questions are well written and intended to not be confusing - One of the best professors I've ever had. Papers are relatively short but he requires quite a bit of thought into each one. He's somewhat of an awkward genius but very willing to meet and help if you just ask.
One of my favorite professors at GVSU. The class required a lot of work but topics were interesting. I loved the philosophical approach and would love to take this prof again! However, be prepared to do a lot of writing. It's an easy A if you keep up with the readings and papers.
I liked this prof. He had fair quizzes, sometimes tricky tests, and interesting video clips. However, sometimes he was moody and if you go to his office hours, he's always in a rush so that can be uncomfortable. And he talks fast! A lot of reading, but not a bad prof.
He is a great prof. He talks fast, and it can be overwhelming at times, but his quizzes are really easy and the tests aren't bad either. Read each chapter and do the concept checks before every class, and you'll ace it! I would recommend him to anyone :)
Professor Burns is a very kind man and he wants his students to do well. His tests are not unmanageable, although you should read the textbook. The only negative thing I could say is that he speaks so excitedly that sometimes it is too fast or too quiet to understand.
Professor Burns is a good professor. It's a hard class because the content is hard (be prepared to learn a lot of DSM diagnosis's). He does talk fast but you learn to understand what he is saying. He is very willing to answer questions, inside and outside of class. Study the in-chapter questions and read, read, read the chapter!
There is a lot of writing every week but the discussions on it are interesting. He grades pretty fairly on the write ups though. The only thing that is hard is the exams but if you ask for help he will help you! defiantly take him for capstone.
I took this class as an elective and I found it to be very low-stress. He is an extremely friendly and helpful professor. The online quizzes are easy, but the tests are very detail-oriented. As long as you go over the textbook readings and lecture slides, you should be fine.
Capstone with Professor Burns definitely made for a tough semester. There is a lot of reading and writing, but if you're a good college student you know the benefits of skimming. This class can easily be aced if you devote one day a week to the readings and writing your one-page write-ups. Class is very engaging. Highly recommended!
My problem with this Professor was the lack of direction for studying for tests. I studied a lot of information very in depth that was not on the tests. I felt that I learned a lot in this class but that it was not reflected in my grades and that severely disappoints me because the information is intriguing..
I had to read the book a TON, and I still felt like I wasn't prepared for his exams. I felt as if I learned TOO MUCH, because he doesn't really zone into specific things we need to know about the different disorders. But he's nice and he cares about his students and their feedback.
Nice professor as long as you understand what he's saying. The more questions you ask the more irritated he becomes. I felt like I learned a ton in this class but my grade didn't reflect that bc his tests are crazy insane. He expects you to know all 3 chapters in great detail for each test. He is not specific on what you should study for.
Great professor! I could see why people gave him low ratings (his lectures are not wonderful, just average) but you can tell that he wants you to succeed. Your grade is depended on exams, online quizzes, and an optional paper. As long as you read, test yourself, and read again, you'll do great! Attendance is necessary for the exams-he shows videos.
I only attended class on the day of the exams and got an A so as long as you look over the powerpoints you should be fine.
Professor Burns is very passionate about what he is teaching, and you can tell he knows what he's talking about. However, his lectures can be hard to follow at times, and I never knew exactly what to study for his exams. The exams were tough because some material was taken directly out of the book and was very specific.
I love Professor Burns. He can talk fast but he is very thorough. His exams are somewhat confusing but he gives out study guides weeks before and will always answer questions. He is truly passionate about the subject and cares about students. I enjoyed his class.
He is a very nice and approachable guy. I enjoyed many conversations I've had with him and he goes above and beyond to help students. Highly recommend.
Grades are mainly dependent on how well you do on tests. Lecture heavy class but interesting.
Professor Burns is awesome. There is a lot of work in this class (5-8 papers per week with write-ups on all of them due), but it's worth it. The readings are usually interesting, and the class is discussion based about the papers. I'd definitely take him again! Recommend for sure.
To many articles per week compared to other capstone classes.
Dr. Burns loves psychopathology; you can tell when he lectures that he loves doing what he is doing. I highly recommend going to class, as case examples are often asked about on the exam. I aced all of the exams except one, and that one I got a B on I skipped class a bunch. I knew all the material, but missed a lot of the case studies.
Professor Burns expects a lot out of his students but after all, it is a capstone course. I was very intimidated at first with the heavy work load, but honestly, once you get into a routine of doing it, it is not hard. Time consuming, but not hard. Take this class! He is amazing and the discussions are incredible.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CAPSTONE. THE AVERAGE STUDENT SPENDS 14-15 HOURS A WEEK ON HIS CLASS MATERIAL. OBNOXIOUSLY DIFFICULT. PARTICIPATION AND WRITE UPS ARE GRADED HARSHLY. WAYYYYY TOO MANY READINGS! This class made me want to drop out.
Alright here's the deal with Burns' class boys and girls. Your grade is dependent on the exams. I believe there are only 3 or 4. No assignments except for an extra credit paper if you so choose. All of the material on the tests is derived DIRECTLY FROM THE TEXTBOOK. A few questions you would know from watching videos in class so don't skip.
Professor Burns truly enjoys his job and his enthusiasm for wanting his students to learn and be engaged shows. However, he does expect you to write and show that you grasp each author's concept. With that being said, you're averaging writing 6-7 short papers a week. If you cannot handle tedious work, don't take his course. Otherwise, go for it!
He is a really fun and easy going guy who loves what he does. There are only 4 tests and a few quizzes but none of the exams are cumulative, they are only on 3 chapters at a time so it is not too overwhelming. He's very peppy and energetic, but talks fast and goes through slides quickly, but he posts them online so it's not bad. Highly recommend!
He is really knowledgeable and passionate about psychopathology, but he does tend to talk really fast. Coming to class is essential in passing because his tests have many of the in class examples on them. Also he provides you with practice exams that are really similar to each of the exams you take. I would recommend him!
Lawrence Burns is an amazing professor. He knows his material and is very passionate about the subject. The class is extremely easy if you pay attention to his lectures and actually read the text book. Dr. Burns does talk a little fast, but its easy enough to get used to- he's just really excited about the class! 10/10 would take his class again
Such a good prof. He mainly lectures but also touches on information outside of lecture so coming to class is essential. Plus you watch inclass videos that he tests you on the test. Gives practice exams that are super helpful. Tests are very straightforward just make sure to read the book. This is the one class I actually used my textbook in.
Burns is a great guy but a horrible prof. His lectures were a waste of time for me personally. I learned more from simply reading the textbook. He does show videos in class that he asks a few questions about on the exams, so skip at your own risk. Interesting material, he just read off the slides.
Dr. Burns is certainly one of the best professors I've seen from the PSY department. Very articulate and knowledgeable, asks the class questions, explains assignments clearly, is passionate about the material, and actually cares that students learn. His lectures are very beneficial, so skip at your own risk, but if you work hard an A is achievable.
SUCH a fun professor! I had him for my capstone and I'll admit, in the beginning I was not looking forward to this class because we had 5-8 papers due every week. But they ended up not being that bad! Class time was so much fun and we always had food in class! He always had interesting topics and was just such a fun professor overall
BEST PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. He cares about each student on a personal and educational level. Yes, there's a lot of reading and homework. But they're short papers and it's so wonderful to partake in.
Professor Burns is the BEST prof I have ever had. He is tough and assigns lots of readings and summaries to write, but after a couple weeks, they're no big deal. Participation is key in this class as it is discussion based, but Burns does an excellent job at making sure everyone gets an opportunity to make a comment so they can get their points.
Burns is a great professor who cares a ton about the topics he is talking about. He talks very fast but he knows that and jokes about how he can't do anything about it. He is not hard to follow but his class is very lecture focused. Lectures and note taking is the whole class. Exams are only a few chapters which is nice
I thought this class was pretty easy. I only used the book for the bold terms and italicized ones and I got an A. Pay attention in class. His examples are super helpful in understanding the material and he sometimes uses them on his exams. He also will take some of the questions off the practice exam and put them on the exam. He does talk fast.
Professor Burns is a good guy, however, I did not learn a single thing from attending class and hearing him ramble. Also, the study guides contain a ton of information that you never learned in class, youre better off reading the book rather than attending class.
Dr. Burns presented the material for the course in a well formatted/logical way. He provides all the lecture slides, however he does add material in the lecture. He also shows a lot of clinical videos which are beneficial to understand Psychopathology. Test are not difficult if you are in class for the videos and lectures, and do some reading.
I really loved this prof. He actually seemed to care about his students. Always asked me how I was everyday. Once I figured out the tests, I was able to get As everytime. He gives sample exams and study guides to study and once I learned how to use those it was a cake walk. His lectures are a little scattered, but it was important to go to class.
This teacher made my capstone the BEST class I took at Grand Valley. He is compassionate about each class period and discussion. I do recommend showing up for each class period and participating because this is a big chunk of your grade. I would recommend Burns for any class! Take this guy for your Capstone!!!
Prof Burns is so kind. He cares about his students a lot and wants you to succeed. There are 5 small 5 point quizzes, and then 4 100 point exams (no final). This makes it difficult to get a good grade, because if you do bad on one, you're screwed. I recommend getting the book and READING IT! Know the terms. Also coming to lecture is important
The best professor I've had throughout my college career! Really cares about his students and gets to know you on a personal level! Such a nice guy, so happy I was able to have him for my final psychology class!
This class is graded on online quizzes, two exams, and a final. He does offer extra credit throughout the semester. His lectures are engaging as he uses real-life examples from his experiences and shows videos related to different mental disorders. He's accessible outside of class and is overall a very nice prof.
Prof Burns was an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about students well-being and is interesting and engaging in class. Grading is only based on a few things so you have to do well on exams, but as long as you read it will be fine. Best professor I've had.
Professor Burns is by far my favorite professor that I've ever had. He is so caring and genuinely wants everyone in his class to succeed. Anyone going into a career in psychology would benefit from taking him as he shares many firsthand accounts of the disorders we learn about from his years as a clinical psychologists. MUST TAKE!
Dr. Burns is so kind and handled the switch to online amazingly! He is super accommodating and is approachable. This was a hard class but he gives you all the tools you need to succeed. As long as you are willing to study hard and read you will do well in this class.
TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN! He is an amazing person and wants you to learn.
Burns is an amazing professor. He really cares about his students and is always available for anything you need. He sent out emails to the entire class periodically to check up on us during these hard times, and was very supportive. We had clear assignments each week, all on web assign and no tests/finals. Take his classes, theyre amazing!
Professor Burns made online learning so easy! He was very organized and very understanding, the assignments and quizzes that were given were through Cengage and all were easily found on BB. Although there was a lot of material to read, the assignments and quizzes were easy and I learned a lot from this class even though it was all online.
He's a really nice guy, but if you want to learn anything from the class, I wouldn't recommend it. The class was entirely activities from the online textbook. He did not lecture at all. The class is an easy A. There aren't any exams or papers. It's literally just textbook activities. It would've been cheaper to just buy the book and read it.
Prof Burns is one of the nicest professors I've had while taking psychology. While I took this class online, I wish I would've had the opportunity to take this class in person. He is up to date on the material and is very nice about content questions or confusions. Is engaging with his students and helps always. If you can TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
No exams only quizzes! He gives you three chances for the quizzes and takes your highest score. HW + quizzes + reading every week, time-consuming but easy! Responds promptly to emails, so caring, checks on you halfway through the semester. Well organized, doesn't lecture though which is somewhat of a downside if you learn better that way. 10/10
Hes a really kind and caring person. There were readings, essays, and a project each week. But they werent too bad and varied according to the length of the reading. He provided great feedback, and typically checks in on his students. He was definitely one of my favorite professors.
Burns is probably the nicest professor I've had at GV. The class doesn't require a lot of work; basically, if you do the work, you'll get a good grade. The class was online and didn't have any exams; which is nice so you don't have to memorize every single thing in the textbook like other psych classes.
Prof Burns is such a nice guy and overall a great professor. there is a lot of information in this class and burns make it a little more manageable. He has great explanations and the class is graded off a few quizzes and 4 exams. His exams are reasonable, even if you just read his lecture notes then you should pass.
Such a sweet man! The class content is beyond interesting and Professor Burns is very enthusiastic about everything. Even if the content was so interesting, I think he would be able to make it interesting. He also genuinely cares so much about his students. You are graded on 3 of 4 exams and 5 of 6 quizzes. I highly recommend this class.
I absolutely loved this Professor! This class was super interesting and it was very easy to get homework done. Took this class online, would totally recommend it. If you looking for history and systems for your major I would definitely take this professor.
If you took abnormal psych in high school, this class is a breeze. 4 exams total (the lowest one is dropped) and an essay is offered for extra credit. Lectures are interesting, and the prof obviously cares bout his students. Take him for an easy psych course.
Professor Burns is a really amazing professor. You can tell he cares a lot about his students. I would say that going to class is necessary because if you don't go you will miss a lot of material. His lectures are always interesting, but sometimes they go really fast. Be prepared to catch up outside of class.
All of the exam information comes straight from the book, but you have to go to lecture to get the in class examples. His lectures are enjoyable and he gives a lot of examples that are helpful to understanding material. Have to read book, but the exams are easy to study for. Very caring prof and I would love to have him again!
Larry is so nice. I didn't even have him in person! He would make videos explaining some material and talked about what to expect that week. Super easy work and easy to get an A for sure. Keep up with the weekly work and biweekly journal and you'll do great. There were no exams bc of the weekly quizzes ( you get unlimited attempts)
Larry is the biggest gem at Grand Valley. He is so kind and caring to his students. The lectures are really interesting and he uses a lot of examples to help explain the material, however, he can move pretty fast sometimes. He drops your lowest quiz and your lowest exam. Just make sure to read your notes AND the textbook for exams!
Larry is a nice guy but this class was painful. It wasn’t super difficult, but it was a ton of weekly content. And he was super nit picky about the format of essays required hard copies in class every week. It just seemed like so much focus was on stuff that didn’t really matter.
LARRY!!!!! I freaking loved Larry so much! He always ended class by saying "thanks for coming" and honestly it made my day. I would 100% take this class again! You have four exams and about six quizzes with an optional paper. The lowest quiz and exam get dropped! Definitely take Professor Burns if you have the opportunity.
Larry is absolutely amazing and so caring. Makes sure to give attention to every student. Four exams, lowest grade is dropped. You do have the read the textbook chapters in order to get a good grade on the exams. The study guides weren't the most helpful. He also talks really fast. Would 100% recommend that you take him at least once.
Professor Burns is truly one of the best!!! He is super caring and helpful. His capstone class is discussion-based and he does an amazing job at remaining unbiased. One of the best classes I took in my whole college career.
Took this online, and we didn't have a single exam. Just had modules with several assignments through the online textbook. Had 5 or 6 150-200 word reflections about content covered and that was it. Lecture videos consisted of 2 minute overviews of content each week. Very nice prof and easiest A you will ever get.
Prof. Burns was one of the best profs I've had at GVSU. Really cares about his students, and always wants to hear what they have to say. His Capstone is discussion-based, make sure that you do the required readings so you're prepared to discuss in class. It can sound daunting but it was a really great class and I have no complaints.
Such an easy class if you take good notes and use the practice exams. I had this class in person and it consisted of 4 exams and 5 quizzes. He drops your lowest quiz AND lowest exam. No papers or assignments. He does talk VERY fast and it can be hard to keep up in lectures, but it isn't terrible. He lectures right off the PowerPoint. Great class
Larry cares about his students & makes sure everyone understands. He talks a tad fast but you to get used to it. Lectures are very engaging & he includes quick personal stories. Not mandatory to go, but the in class videos are always on exams. 4 exams & 5 quizzes, both lowest are dropped. There's an optional paper if you want to increase your grade
This professor has been the only one at GVSU who has made a difference in my life. The class is so powerful and so important. You may have to read, but its really worth it to open your mind to the pieces he shares. Im so glad he was part of my journey!! What an amazing guy!
Dr. Burns is a great professor, and this is one of the best classes I have taken in my college career. Most importantly, he genuinely enjoys having the students share their own opinions and cares about students doing well in the course. If you put your best effort into your thoughts for the class discussion, you will do just fine.
Professor Burns is such a wonderful and caring professor! If you show up and do the work, you'll do great. He puts so much effort into his lectures, discussions, and PowerPoints. He's also very understanding and sweet!
Burns is such a nice person. This class was just more work than I expected (in person) because we had write-ups due each week. There are 3 exams which are essay exams (3 questions). Burns sometimes goes off on tangents and it confused me when listening to his lectures. He also talks really fast which is confusing at times too but he's not bad.
Burns is a nice guy, but I felt like I didn't learn a lot from him/his lectures. I had to read the book to do well on the exams, but if you pass those you're pretty much set. There are 4 exams and 6 quizzes (both of which he drops the lowest grade) and he offers an optional paper that will shift the point distribution to provide more leeway.
Took as an online class, so easy.
Can't say enough good things. Lectures were enjoyable and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students and what they have to say. He made the material easy to understand, exams were easy due to helpful study guides and practice exams, slides uploaded so if you missed class you could review them. Wish I could take him for other classes!
Dr. Burns was AMAZING! The class was easy to navigate and it was intellectually stimulating, but very rewarding. He is so caring and very down to earth. I take my Capstone with him this fall and I cannot wait. If you can get into one of his classes--do it! There is a reason his classes are full. Love this man!
This capstone was interesting. The class itself is fine, mainly discussion-based. It's the homework that makes this class harder to enjoy. Each week we were assigned about 8 articles and we had to complete write ups, I'd be turning in 11-12 pages of writing every week. If you're willing to do the work, he's a great prof! If not, find someone else.
I honestly learned fr life skills/lessons in this class it was really fun to be a part of. We did a lot of reading and writing but if you spread it out throughout the week it's not bad. You're opinion is valued and important in this class. He always says it's the most difficult A you'll ever receive(true). Fast talker but love his teaching
He's just such a sweetie pie. Genuinely wants his students to succeed and he's very accessible outside of class, too! The workload is manageable and it's an easy going class. One of the best professors I've ever had.
Caring, kind, insightful, wise. Burns is a great prof and leads great discussions. Lots of readings but that's pretty typical for an honors class. you will need to actually read them and write reflections on them and then discuss the themes in class. He's an easy grader but that does not change the workload so factor that in. Would take again 100%
I had Prof. Burns for Psych 303. You could tell he knew a lot about the material. This class was also very interesting. Overall, the class was not too challenging and prof burns is a genuinely nice person who is more than willing to help his students succeed. I would definitely recommend this class with Burns.
Psy 405 is the second course I have taken with Professor Burns. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students' success. The grading criteria were clear and reasonable, and the assignments were more than manageable. I highly recommend taking a class with Professor Burns; you will actually learn something.
Professor Burns' Psych 303 class was a rewarding experience. The lectures were engaging, and he genuinely cares about his students. The course material was interesting, and the exams were manageable with the help of study guides and practice exams. I also found unstuck study to be a useful supplement for exam prep.
Burns' capstone class is quite fulfilling & actually encourages students to critically think. There are a few readings & a write-up of multiple pages due every week but they are very manageable (even if that sounds scary). There are also written exams that are not hard at all. He is so funny and kind, my second time taking him and I'd do it again.
Prof burns was super kind and understanding. All the grades in the course came from quizzes and exams but they were fairly easy and easy to prepare.
Professor Burns was an amazing professor who made the long lectures fly by. He would frequently bring up moments from his own career that had to do with the material, which were often very funny and informative. The material was interesting and engaging, but you really have to pay attention as it will all show up on the exams. I reccomend!
This class was done almost entirely on MindTap/Cengage. For each module you read the text and answer multiple choice questions (you can keep answering until you get them correct). There are also a few reflection journals where you just write what you found interesting. The only weird thing was the Monday due dates for everything.
Quirky and enthusiastic. Perfect guy to teach a discussion-based class. I took this class at 8:30am and didn't dread it entirely because I knew he would have something interesting to talk about. Lots of papers, but he's a pretty easy grader. You can tell he really cares about his students.
