Math 266- linear algebra. 6 week summer course was very easy- he was helpful, and had one midterm, 4 assignments, and a final. You could use any books for the assignments, or compare answers with classmates before handing them in. Very fair.
He really didn't seem to know what he was doing..the lecture slides were prepared by another prof so just study them and you'll be okay.
CONS -Tries too hard to be funny & his anecdotes waste time -Pace became rushed near term end -Marker returned assignments to us late PROS -Adept @ using BBLearn site -Teaches directly from the lecture slides he posts -Answers emails adequately -Genuine, reasonable & cares about learning: -Recommended!
He's always happy and he's genuinely funny. Let's you bring a cheat sheet and notes to the midterm, overall fun teacher for stats.
This professor teaches like university should be. This class is a lot of work however. Professor Chang is very accommodating, I have been ill often this semester and he gives me extensions without complaints. He does everything he can to ensure the students do well, where as some professors seem as though they want their students to fail. Nice guy.
He's ties to be funny and engaging which is nice, however he has a difficult accent to understand!
Spent the classes off topic and unfocused. Often spent time going on tangents and misunderstanding questions. Worst prof I've had. If I were you I'd try to avoid him.
Great instructor. He really wants his students to do well, and he gives us an EXTRA week to finish all of our assignments. The material is somewhat dry, but he'll make you laugh (if not at his jokes then at the way the laugh) Definitely recommended!
He's really nice, but it's very hard to follow his lectures. He speaks quietly, which doesn't help his slight accent. His explanations are often unclear, and his examples are too easy and don't prepare you for the quizzes and exams. Unless you've already taken high school calculus (it's the exact same as math104) maybe find a different prof.
He does not explain his lectures well, and when he tells you to focus on specific equations, or rules, they are never on the midterms. Hard to understand at times, and seems very moody in class.
Chang is such a sweetheart, he's always smiling and always wants people to ask questions. However, his explanations on questions aren't clear (for me at least) and his notes are all pre-done examples so you don't do anything in lectures. He demands respect from his students and can call you out when you're talking. All tests are multiple choice.
Overall, he went to fast, could hardly understand him and couldn't take responsibility for him having the lowest average of any math class at the U of S. Didn't have much interest to begin with, have zero interest now.
I began to skip because i partially could not understand him, and he didn't help me understand the material at all. I hired a tutor and spent time in the help centre. It is a lot of work (weekly 3-4 hour assignments), but they do help you learn the material. He wants to be a good prof, and seems truly genuine, but his teaching methods aren't ideal
He's a really nice prof, but his accent is really difficult to understand. I ended up only going to class for the midterms and the final. I just went to the math help centre and taught myself the class.
He's super helpful if you ever have any questions about assignments or midterms and is always willing to give you a couple of extra marks for effort and comprehension of material. Great guy.
Just everything I hate about professor's in general, he gets off topic a lot in random places, he does the easiest questions for examples and makes you the student learn the hard stuff. The tests are hard and partial marks are nonexistent. Just a really bad professor that seems passionate but that doesn't make him good.
I think there is nothing in life that Dr. Chang wants than to be a prof. He is very friendly. Tries to be funny and interesting (despite the dry subject). You can always approach him for help. He does make some mistakes and is unclear at times. He is much better than some instructors I have had. A decent fellow. I wouldn't be so hard on him.
A really great prof! He will go out of his way to make sure everyone understands a concept. Tries to make boring math lectures interesting with a good sense of humour. The math department makes the tests (which are hard), not the prof. Lots of homework and quizzes. Overall a good guy who tries his best to make math understandable and bearable.
More of an "information provider" or note provider than an educator; which is not helpful for such a difficult class.
I took Math 110 from Lawrence in my first term of uni and I am currently in Stats 244 in my second term. His lecture style is long and the lectures are painful to get through, he is much too easily distracted, and he answers questions from students poorly. I definitely would not recommend him if math is not your strong suit, he won't help you.
Lectures felt very pointless, he just read exactly was on his slides and barely went into greater detail with his explanations. You won't learn much from him but the resources he provides are very helpful. Midterms were very difficult but there were three of them, and the homework is long and hard but is an easy grade boost.
Honestly it was kind of hard to follow along in class because there were quite a few problems with communication between students and prof Chang.
Great guy, terrible prof.
Literally the worst prof I've ever had. First midterm class average was 28%. He doesn't explain anything and won't help you at all. Avoid taking a class with Chang at all costs.
Chang was a horrible teacher! Our entire class got an average of 28% on the first midterm and he just made fun of us! He wastes time talking about his life in Malaysia instead of teaching us anything. Chang is bad news. Avoid taking any of his courses at all costs.
His lectures don't seem to teach you what you need to know for the tests in terms of what he is looking for to mark it. I felt confident after each test, and failed both of them even though I thought I knew what I was doing based on the lectures. Not easy at all.
Really bad prof. Spends most of the lecture talking about things that are irrelevant to the course. You have a better chance just teaching yourself I found he made things more confusing than they had to be.
In my five years of university, this has been the most painful university experience yet. Took a year long course and have never been so frustrated. Terrible teaching styles, irrelevant material brought in, language barriers, no explanations for material, Marking rubric inadequate etc. Would not recommend to anybody who's NOT proficient in math.
He was the worst prof I ever had. Incredibly disrespectful.
Takes forever to get past one lesson and does not explain how to do difficult examples. Every method he has is too complex and way too drawn out. His exams are just questions from the textbooks that are the most difficult ones that you've never been taught. Just skip class and do the textbook questions by yourself you'll learn it better that way.
I do not think it is fair, the comments made. He is an amazing professor!!!! He teaches well and cares that you understand the concept. Taking this class with him has solidified my love for Math. If Math is not strong subject take the class with him. He is also fatherly.... You are appreciated Dr Chang.
Prof Chang, is an amazing Professor, he knows he stuff well. He likes to joke a lot to keep the class lively
Awful professor, strays away from course content and ends up rushing class. Whether you show up or not you will not do good unless you are proficient in math. Tests are either extremely easy or way too difficult.
He has an amazing talent to make difficult concepts understandable.
Chang honestly is a good prof. He does rush through heavy concepts though so if you do not do the work to learn the concepts right away, the class will be overwhelming.
Nice guy, bad prof. Spent way too much time on review and basics, leaving the hard stuff to be rushed. Went off topic in lecture often, wasting even more time. Midterms were incredibly easy, but the final was difficult and included things barely covered in class. Do not take this prof unless you want to teach yourself calculus.
He is a nice guy, but like ppl before said, he spent waaay too much time of the review and not enough on calculus. We literally finished integration in TWO classes. So you have to have some background in calculus to do well in his class. He is pretty funny tho, but i usually ended up zoning out cause his lectures drag on forever. Final was hard.
He spent more time on the review chapter, of basic math then he did on the chapters teaching students calculus. His final was hard. He did not do a very good job explaining difficult concepts. If you do not have any background in calculus, you are gonna have a very difficult time
Dr. Chang was a great prof and I enjoyed his class. It made math in the morning enjoyable, and I usually found myself laughing at his analogies in class. The course consisted of 3 midterms, online assignments, and a 50% final. He's very understanding and easy to access outside of class. Only negative would be how he rushed the last unit.
Dr. Chang is a really caring and entertaining professor. He sometimes goes off on tangents with random stories but they are always quite entertaining. He spends a little too much time on reviewing material and the end of the class felt rushed. Make sure you ace the midterms (which are incredibly easy), to set yourself up well for a challenging exam
He didn't really teach. Get ready to go off his notes and the textbook basically because anything that comes out of his mouth is basically USELESS. Drop if you can. The final was BRUTAL but midterms were easy.
I like Lawrence because he actually provides examples in his notes and in his lectures instead of simply regurgitating concepts found from the textbooks. All his tests are open book, went into midterm 1 expecting it to be really difficult and ended up coming out with a 97%. Lawrence is really laid back, not sure why everyone dislikes him.
worst profrssor ever. you dont even know where you get wrong.I dont think he understand of what he is teaching,so class are easy
Worst profferer of my uni career. A student will ask questions like "do we need to know how to draw the graph for the midterm" he replied with "if the question asks then yes" and he's not even being funny, totally serious. His notes are illegible. He will waste so much class time telling boring stories and going on tangents.
Dr. Chang teaches a pretty standard Statistics course. His notes and examples are far better than the textbook and obviate the need to attend class. His midterms were pretty simple and short but the comprehensive final was long and thorough
Overall not a bad professor, likes to use jokes to lighten the mood in class. But content dragged on, we were lucky to get through a few pages a day. The three midterms are very easy but the final was more challenging. Not mandatory to go to class but he does highlight some questions that will be on exams. Study the notes and go through examples
Lawrence was a great guy, just not a good prof. For anyone like myself who is good at mathematics you will do well in this course, but if you are not proficient at math then get ready to work hard. We had 3 midterms which were easy and the final wasnt bad. But if you ever had a question for him he would always help and try his best.
He is a wonderful person. He genuinely cares about the student and wants them to succeed. As a prof however, his lectures may seem to drag on. He really really tries to make the lecture funny and enjoyable for everyone, but seems like he isn't very successful at it. I honestly found the midterms to be harder than the final. He answers all questions
Lawrence is a good guy but a terrible teacher. Took Stats 244 with him and taught myself the class. Google will be your best friend. Best thing about this class is all his tests are open book open internet and everything is done on web assign. Don't buy the textbook its a waste of money. You don't need to show up for his classes.
Lawrence Chang is a lovely professor. Based on this page, you'll find many complaints. I can tell you that for STAT 245 that if you show up for class, you're guaranteed to ace this class. Everything is open book, and the lectures will give you enough knowledge to finish the assignments and ace the midterm and final.
Nice guy, horrible prof. Lawrence knows what he's talking about, but he has no idea how to teach. Class is a waste of time, as all he does is make lame jokes and tell stories, leaving you clueless on assignments and notes. If you have a chance to take Stavros, DO IT. Lawrence is not worth anyone's time, and the coordinator Amos, is awful too.
Open book class; all tests and assignments were done online. The lecture notes had all formulas needed and plenty of examples but were difficult to understand if you had not paid attention in lecture. It was difficult to keep focus at times as the material began to feel repetitive, but he tried to keep it entertaining with stories and jokes.
Horrible notes and handwriting. Lots of typos and mistakes in notes even sometimes in test papers. Boring and unhelpful lectures. Does not seem like a very competent teacher.
I had Lawrence for 121 online and it was awesome! He's very friendly and makes you laugh but also gives a ton of examples in his notes which is an awesome way to learn. He posted all of his notes for the whole term at the beginning but there are a lot of typos so be sure to double-check the notes you're taking so they are accurate and make sense.
Fabulous prof. He loves to make corny jokes and share stories that connect to course material - which makes it easy to remember stuff! You can tell he cares a lot about the wellbeing of his students. He posts really good lecture notes so you don't have to take any, which helped me really focus on what he had to say.
Dr. Chang is the best. I do not like seeing these negative reviews as they are not true. His mornning musings are a great way to start the day. He is very helpful and easily accessible outside of class. I highly reccommend him.
I would honestly love to put more than three tags about this man. The other tags include gives good feedback, inspirational, amazing lectures and is extremely caring about his students wellbeing. These negative reviews are from ignorant people who know nothing. Good math teacher and is knowledgeabl. His morning musings are great ways to start class
He is a very nice person. You can get a high grade in his class.
Dr. Chang is an okay teacher for Stats 244. He really emphasizes everything during live lectures, but if you don't understand something don't be afraid to ask him! The hardest part about this class is the last chapters so don't be scared to ask him. Also, don't really bother the TA because she will not teach you go after professor Chang.
Dr. Chang was a really nice professor. He was chill though sometimes gets sidetracked in his lectures but he explains things well and you can always reach out to him to ask questions at any time on WebAssign or via his email/phone. The assignments are long but it's a very good tool to practice for your final exam.
My absolute favorite professor! Totally nice and will not disappoint!
Lawrence is really nice. He does want students to succeed. Unfortunately, Chang's class was the most difficult class I have ever taken, and I graduated with great distinction and get reliable 90's in courses. Chang just doesn't know how to teach. The notes are hard to follow, if you don't have a strong math background, be prepared to work hard!!
Professor Chang is a good professor for a first year stats class. He is extremely understanding, and wants the best for his students. He gives out details notes, making the content a lot easier to understand and to refer to. Overall, I would take him again!
Lawrence consistently did not answer emails, almost always posted lectures late (often one or two weeks), and overall seemed incredibly disorganized. Assignment help was not given in labs, making them pretty pointless to me. Lectures were fine but a bit rambly at times. Lawrence seems incredibly nice but was frustrating and ineffective as a prof.
Dr. Chang is an amazing professor. He took over our class 1/4 of the semester. He gave us his phone number to message him regarding questions about our assignment and always answer less than 24 hours. His powerpoint is easy to read and will ask you guys as a group if you dont understand. If you guys dont, he will reteach it.
Easy to understand, shows all the work, and I didn't need to email him to get a 99.
Nice Prof will take class again!
Literally, the best prof I've ever had. If you need a nursing stat pre-requisite, this class is for you. Was very clear in his teachings and replied to emails quickly and calmly. Very understanding and agrees to extend deadlines for assignments. Take this class you will definitely not regret it.
If you have the chance to take MATH 224 in the summer with this man, do it. You will receive a very high grade (as far as engineering goes). Three midterms, 13 hours online and open book, and a 24-hour online final combined with the ability to watch lectures from home made for a Calculus IV experience far better than what you'd get in the winter.
The assignments are so easy to get 100 on. Literally everything you need is in the lecture notes. The take home final was easy as well. I'm usually a 70s student, but I got 112% on the final because of the bonus questions. You won't do well if you don't put work in.
Overall a good prof. Almost every question on an exam or assignment was done in a similar example. As long as you have good notes, this is a very manageable course. He does a good job in teaching it.
Lectures were well-organized. Some assignments could be quite long at times and you did have to pay for WebAssign which was annoying, but the assignments were generally helpful. Didn't really interact with Chang since our class was all through videos but they were good.
Wholesome professor, I feel relaxed in his class. You can tell he truly cares that the student learns does well. He gives a lot of tries for assignments and encourages practicing. Barely need to write notes myself because his lecture notes/textbook is already the condensed course material. A supportive teacher really does make you want to succeed.
Lawrence does not deserve the negative reviews he is getting. He is always there to help when you need it and he is quite convenient and easy to reach and get in touch with. He always starts up his lectures with a story or joke to get you going for the day. He is one of the best math profs I ever had. Helpful, caring, knowledgeable and great.
Awesome prof that knows what he is doing. Very helpful when you need it. He truly cares about his students and wants you to do well. Lawrence has been an awesome prof overall. I would highly recommend taking this professor.
Awesome prof and literally the best ever and really knows what he is doing. Very helpful and wants you to succeed. Overall just a great person.
Great prof that is helpful, knows what he is teaching and explains content and concepts well. His musings or stories at the beginning of class are an amazing way to start the day. Highly recommend this prof.
Professor Chang is by far the best professor I have ever had on campus. He knows his stuff very well and is very engaging with his morning discussions and musings and is a great way to start the day. He is also there to help you out when you really need it. I highly recommend Professor Chang and think the university should hire him full time.
He began almost every lecture with life lesson oriented stories, and often times we finished early. Even though that cuts out a third of every lecture, we got through the material in a very thorough manner. The textbook is 23 dollars, and it is the same as the lecture notes for the class, which is a little odd, but very effective.
Though I never had Prof Chang in an IRL lecture, he has amazing online lectures of 244. Easy to follow, and he explains concepts well. Hes sarcastically funny and hes never boring. Hes amazing.
You know when you come across that teacher who is an amazing person and a good at what they do? Chang is one of those people. He is hilarious. His class does not feel like a chore. His notes are phenomenal (if you have minimal mathematical thinking, you can probably get away with missing some classes). An honour to have this person teach me!!
I have never seen a professor so determined to make sure that every student in his class learns something. He will not move on with his lecture until he is sure all questions are answered. His lectures are high energy and and very engaging. Assignments are very long, but they're designed in a way where you will always get the best mark you can get.
The assignments and final he made were all based on his notes, its open book and very easy to get high 90+. No need to do any studying to prepare for the final.
Online content is spectacular. Lectures are helpful, notes are clear. Textbook useful for extra practice and is free. Five assignments and final was a great setup. Assignments were not overly long. Final was stressful, but you get 24h to complete (midnight to midnight) so use your time wisely! Would happily take a course by him again.
Stats 244 was actually my favourite class this semester. If you start your assignments ahead, you will do fine
He likes to connect with the students and makes the lectures fun! He talks a lot, but he does a point with them!!
He's postponed assignments and three midterms. He's offen late to class, and even when he's on time, class doesn't start for another 10-20 min We're still on Chapter 3 of 8, and finals start in two weeks. He also made us buy a textbook just to get the key for assignments, but then decided not to use it, so that was a waste of money
Dr. Chang by no doubt clearly cares about his students, however we write finals in two weeks, and we are only on chapter 3/8. He has not marked a single assignment or midterm, and has postponed all 3 of our midterms MULTIPLE times. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt as he hasn't taught this class in 8 years, but his notes suck.
Dr. Chang brings a light-hearted energy to class He makes fun jokes and answers questions politely. He gets distracted during lectures which can make feel slow. He gives a very limited amount of time for exams (16 hours, open at 9am close at 11:59pm on Fridays) with no flexibility. Be prepared to lose some of your Friday evenings to math homework.
Do not recommend if you need to take multiple math classes. His teaching is all over the place and he goes off of messy lecture notes he made years ago. We were constantly behind in class and had only completed four chapters in the semester. Also we do not have any grades a week before our final exam. Don't recommend
Dr. Chang was all over the place during this course. We were behind and he postponed midterms constantly. But I can tell he is passionate about his students and teaching. He would answer questions well but go off on rants that would barely relate to the lecture. I have mixed feelings, but he was very accommodating.
If this is the only math class you need then take this class with Dr Chang because we only got to unit 6 out of 8. We are about less than a week away from our final and have only had 1 assignment graded and we have completed 2 assignments and 3 midterms. Also he has postponed everything multiple times and only told whoever was in class that day.
Dr. Chang is a very personable and witty guy, often telling stories and jokes during class. All of our midterms/assignments and our final were online and open book. If you need to take more math classes beyond MATH125, I do not recommend Dr. Chang. However, if you only need this math, taking it with Dr. Chang is easy!
Has a textbook made by him with every lesson, formula, definition where he makes videos with it. 10 assignments, 3 midterms, and a final. 100 submissions PER question. Very easy to pass, videos are kinda boring so I ended up watching YouTube videos to further explain but that's just the learning process. Recommended
His online stat244 course was okay-ish as the assignments were posted on time but he lacked some guidance on how to navigate the whole course. He is very good with his deadline extensions and will you give one even for the slightest reason. He is not prompt with his emails at all though!
I can't express how nice it was to find an egoless math professor. But the negatives are that he gives us concepts in lectures and changes them on tests, like learning procedure for a 4x4 matrix but giving us a 6x2 on the final, which has different procedures. He also fell off the earth after last day, no one could reach him about final grades.
He is a good guy who try's to make his students laugh but with that he often goes off course and takes 15 min rants. He also takes a long time to grade for example got assignment 1 mark back after the final!! Be prepared to teach yourself the content.
Dr. Chang is such a sweetheart, but when it came to course material, I feel like I didn't learn as much as I could/should have, as we were often sidetracked with silly stories.I also often found myself referring to my calculus notes from highschool, rather than the notes provided. If you can teach yourself, you will be okay 🤷‍♀️
Hilarious and cares about his students which made it encouraging to come to class; however he often got sidetracked which made it difficult to fully learn/understand the content. Assignments/exams were completed online which was nice especially during finals season but overall not the best lecture experience & took awhile to mark assignments/tests.
Super awesome class for Stats 244. He writes the textbook but sells it for $25 (so cheap compared to others). I got a 95% in the class and I am not that great at math. You get unlimited attempts for the homework quizzes. The midterms were only 3-6 questions.
If you want to take a math class but not have to put in too too much effort, he's your guy. All of our exams were online and open book, and we had like 23 hours to complete them. There's def gonna be some stuff where you're lowkey better off teaching yourself, but he always tries his best. This man really doesn't want you to fail and wants to help
He is hilarious and makes class very entertaining. He obviously cares about his students and wants them to learn but at the same time he gets very distracted during class and does not effectively teach all the course material. He taught easy material during class but then when you open the final it is not even close to what was taught.
Dr Chang was great. His lectures covered all of the course material and if you're well acclimated in math at all, this course is a super easy credit
Inconsiderate prof. Takes 7 entire business years to respond, like honestly staple my foreskin shut.
He would assign tests and assignments that were to be completed by the end of the day or end of the week; however, he did not grade any of these until after the final exam was complete, making it hard to know what to study for. He also included things on the final that we had not learned in class. All exams, however, were done online and at home.
A nice guy, but we spent so long on the review of math 30-1. Even when we got to the course material, he did not teach it well enough to prepare us for the final, as there was a question on it that we had never gone over an example of in class. Though we had quizzes throughout the term, they where only graded until after the final.
