This class is very boring. I definitely cannot stand the policelike TA's. This course requires too much reading in such short period of time. Do not take this class, you're better off with a different professor, any professor besides Curry.
I hate this class! It is extremely boring, and I have a hard time staying awake. The only times I've actually paid attention it's because I had an energy drink before class. I hate the TA's, especially Cox because he's so damn rude. He should fall in a hole and rot. I have nothing against Curry, it's just that his class is boring. There is tons of reading, too. I heard Moretta is a REALLY good professor.

If you read you will make A.
its hard to make an A in this class but its not that bad. you will to read to atleast pass the class.
He lectures the entire time and hates when students begin to put their things up before he's finished. Somewhat clear, but his test are tricky because he pulls his info from a lot of different resources that are assigned to the class. Your grade will all depend on how much you read for the class. Lecture notes will not get you by on the tests. If y
easy teacher. lectures can go on and on. he makes them interesting, i think. he can be funny, if your awake you can actually catch the jokes. has a very awsome way to wake you up. his tests are based on his lectures, so keep an open ear and put down what he teaches and you will pass. multiple choice and essay tests. i recommend him to anyone.
i will recommend him to anyone. 75% of the people asleep in his class and ready to run out of there when class ends. he lectures the whole class. if you are a person that can stay awake and pay attention then you should do fine. reading a couple of books is also a must in the class.
Although he is a little monotone, his lectures are interesting, if you listen to him. His tests come from his lectures, and all of his notes are online, so you can print them out. gives extra credit just for attendance.
Excellent teaching style. Very clear. Test questions directly from his lectures. Provides notes outlines on his website. If you go to the small group discussion sessions for the books assigned you get extra credit and will be able to answer the test questions on the book easily. Extra credit for good attendance.
very funny guy, old and very smart, deserves all the respect u can give him, lectures and interesting and clear
extremely easy class as long as you stay awake and don't skip. multiple choice is straight from the lectures and he will repeat important things many times. each test also has an essay but he gives you the possible questions before the test. history is pretty boring but the guy's a good teacher and easy to understand.
class is entirely lecture, but very interesting. shows a lot of videos. There is a midterm and a final, which are essays so just take good notes. There is also a book report, you heard right, he makes you turn in. Makes jokes in class, which i think he tells year after year, but overall good.
Notes are completely outlined on overhead and can be downloaded directly from his site so...no note taking. Tests are short with questions that are Clearly stated in the lecture. Essays on tests can be pre-researched and are a joke. All u have to do is include so many facts in random order. Dont actually have to read the books and no project.
I loved his class!! He maybe monotone but he knows his stuff! You really don't need the books though. Well maybe the one he wrote, but even then it's not really necessary. Stay awake; take good notes (especially the things he repeats), easy tests, but still needs to study! Highly recommend him! Good luck!
Nice guy, good teacher. Exams are multiple choice so they can be a bit tricky. TA's take attendance so after you miss 8 classes you get dropped. Lectures can be a bit boring but all the notes are online so sleep away if need be.
Great professor! He shows a lot of videos to supplement the lectures. Very helpful if you have questions. He met with me twice to go over the book report. He leaves a lot of comments on the midterm to help you improve for the final and he grades pretty easy. Would take him again if I was a history major
NICE professor and EASY class. DO NOT buy the books. Waste of money bc u do not need them. got an A just by going to class and copying notes on overhead. notes are on-line but lets face it. your gonna print them and never look at them again so u might as well write it to help u mememorize. study an hour before tests and u'll do fine.
Curry really knows his American History--easy A if you take notes, can BS essays and memorize flashcards. You don't need ANY of the text books, but if you want bonus and will read them, the little novels aren't bad. He takes attendance-miss less than 3x and you get bonus pts. It's not a complete blow off class, but it's also NOT hard.
He's ok I guess...He can get a bit boring sometimes but overall he is ok...you just need to study and you'll pass the class
So far so good! I really like Professor Curry. He is pretty knowledgeable and knows his information. Posts notes online too!
Bless his heart, this ol' guy is lively and loves Patriotic holidays, he's VERY informative, he takes attendance, and he notices when you fall asleep. But won't call you out. You'll get a "B" or above if you pay attention in class and read the readings. (Which aren't alot, but they are a bit boring)
Prof. Curry is so cute and funny. If you attend class and take notes you should be fine.I would take another one of his classes. I would also say that he is a very good teacher.
TONS of reading as if we weren't taking any other classes.4 tests, mandatory attendance or get dropped, PAY Attention! funny sometimes but monotone, 3 T.A's. Very hard for me b/c History is not my thing. I pray I passed. Gets strict on rules when ppl becomes rude. I wouldn't recommend for full time students Reading's is KEY.
Nice professor. This course does require you to attend class and read outside materials. Tests can be tricky. If you attend class, take good notes, and study, you should get no less than a C in the class. Overall, a very nice professor who teaches a boring subject.
Really knowledgeable professor. I love his teaching style. Posts notes on the overhead as he lectures. You must study for tests, but other than that, its a fairly easy class. You do have to do some reading and I advise going to class for extra attendence points. Overall, an excellent professor and UH needs more people like professsor Curry!
Great teacher! Make sure you go to class for extra points. Notes can be found online but it doesnt hurt to take your own notes. Make sure you STUDY hard for all the test (2 test, 1 optional exam which is easy, and a final)
This teacher is HILARIOUS!!! that's if you have a dry sense of humor. This is an easy A. I never read any of the texts and I made an A in the course. Make sure you attend every lecture (including Friday's) and listen carefully when they start talking about the readings. most test questions over the texts are discussed in class.
Best history teacher for freshman history. Do not take any other professors! Take Professor Curry. Excellent teaching style, notes are posted online, and he goes over exam material. Way better than any professor in the history dept! Take Curry!
Take this class! Although he does have a monotone voice which'll put ya to sleep, he is funny and presents the material in a clear manner, easy to understand. The exams aren't hard at all, as long as you study the notes online, and listen to his lectures! Don't have to read the books he assigns either, just pay attention to the discussions!
I usually have no time to read the textbook, but I just pay attention to what he says in class and take notes. I only read the extra books and made high B's. The test is easy and a lot of it comes from what he says in class. He said it was better to skim through the textbook and just read what he emphasized in class.
The class is pretty boring... but also very easy. Just going to class and listen to him without studying for test at all would be enough to get a C and pass his class.
He was terrible, the class is insanely boring. Please don't take this class. It will lower your average.
He is boring and will put u to sleep. He does not help you review for any of the exams. He looks like a tomato.
Want an A?: Print the notes that he puts on Blackboard onto one word document, take additional notes on the document, anything he repeats twice will be on the test, he goes over the answers from the tests so write them down for the final. I never read any of the text, or additional books, however take notes during those book discussions. Very Easy!
Adorable old man who cracks jokes and treats all his students respectfully. Extra credit for attending class and participating in discussions. Don't buy the book, just read his online notes before the test. He gives you the answers to the final and the make up exam. There's no reason not to get an A.
This professor is super boring but i recommend his class cuz he is easy. he gives multiple choice test and he puts his slides online
TOO MUCH READING! i didnt read anything and got an A. the tests are somewhat easy. for the make up tests and final he reviews...PAY ATTENTION because most/all of those questions are on the tests. Notes are very clear tho, lectures help u understand. I wouldnt not recomend him but I would recommend Kathleen Brosnan for History. She is way easier!
VERY BORING and his test seem pretty hard theyre made up of multiple choice questions and an essay and he gives no extra credit chances unless you attend every class. He is old and needs to retire because he has clearly lost his passion to teach history and make it engaging and interesting!!
he gives no extra credit chances unless you attend every class. He is old and needs to retire because he has clearly lost his passion to teach history and make it engaging and interesting!!
Had him for The U S To 1877. The best History professor I've had. He may be old, but he knows his material and the multiple-choice exams are EASY! Go over his lecture notes for the exams. You must read or at least skim through the required readings for his essays. TAs were wonderful as well. There IS extra credit. It's an optional exam. Made an A!
This professor is very interesting and passionate about history. He is very fair by giving students the opportunity of earn extra credit by attending and participating in book discussions.
Best Hist teacher ever! I would take him again if I could, but you gotta be ready to put in effort! Tests are easy, just read through slides(which are online). Take few notes in class. Final NOT comprehensive. Made an A & honestly didn't ever really crucially study.
If you want an easy class then take him. Although he may be a bit old and boring from time to time, its worth going to class for. Didn't read the book much but know the notes and pay attention to his lectures. Most of the test are things off his lecture. Optional exam and final were easy cheesy. He gives you a review before the test.
Test are exactly from his lectures. Books are only for reference. When he post questions on the overhead (SPECIALLY ON FINALS WEEK) pay attention! they are what will be on the final! --made an A. He's really great!
Wonderful, dry sense of humor. Open to students opinions/class discussion. Lectures straight from the books. Took him for U.S. History 1945-1960 Honors Course and made an A. You have to attend class! If you take great notes then you don't necessarily have to read all the books but you will have to do a min 11 pg book report over one book your choic
Awesome, easy class. (Although I've *heard* of easier Hist classes @uh where A's are practically handed..idk) Love Curry's lectures and his personality. :) Wish I had him this semester.
Attendance is necessary, you can lose points if you miss too many classes. The books aren't really needed if you pay attention during the discussions. He didn't go over as many test answers as people said he had in the past. Overall, if you study a little...easy class.
Boring lectures. Mandatory attendance with 100% attention necessary or else the TA will still count you absent. Tests were hard.
He is the sweetest man ever and loves history and if you listen to his lectures and read you'll do fine. If you don't buy the books atleast know what they are about because they are on the exam.
DONT BUY ANY BOOKS!! I repeat don't waste money buying 4 books. b/c you don't need them unless you really want to read and stuff. but just go to his class and get his overheads online, and you will guarantee make a B. i never understand what he talks about in class but i just read of his overheads two days b4 his test and get a B and i hate history
Professor Curry is really great! I like the way he lectures and his tests aren't bad if you study. For those who say the books are not necessary that WILL change next semester because the "Discussion" part of the class is now going to be separated. You will now be graded on the discussion so beware! Other than that PROFESSOR CURRY IS GREAT!
Professor Curry is great! I love his dry sarcasm, and lectures. His class is really not difficult, and you will get what you put into it. Pay attention to discussions, lectures, and take good notes. Test are not hard at all if you at least prepare yourself. TAKE THIS HISTORY CLASS!!!
Professor Curry is SOOO nice! And he is passionate about what he teaches. I took him for HIST 4313 (senior course) and he made sure that we really learn the material. I did well on my book report, studied a bit for the midterm, and had no trouble making an A-. Take good notes and research more on subjects if necessary. He is a very sweet man :)
Dr. Curry is a very sweet man and is passionate about the subject, which makes it easier to pay attention to him. If you attend lectures and study, the tests are what he says they are. He is an old-school lecturer, but you can't fall asleep. I recommend him!
Awesome professor. Sit in front as intercom system makes it hard to hear if not in the front. He gives in total four exams, which the lowest will be dropped with your discussion session grade (easy 100). Tests: 32 MC worth 2 points each, and an essay out of 33 (curve of 5 points per test). Attend all his lectures as tests are verbatim what he says.
Dr. Curry is a fantastic professor. He is straight forward and easy to understand. If you take notes everyday and read the assignments it is impossible not to pass the class.
Attend the lecture and discussions regularly for extra credit. You don't need the book "The American Story." But you would want to have the book "American Political Tradition" for discussion questions. Most of the discussion questions can be found online on Notehall. Also just go over the Online Overheads from his website for good grades on Tests.
Dr. Curry was one of my proffs in 1976-77. I did not get the opportunity to rate him but I will now. He was wonderful and stimulating as well as a presenting his lectures w/personality and seriousness.
Very knowledgable professor. Would totally recommend!
Go to class, take note, study the notes, pass test with an A (don't even have to read textbook) :) Lectures can get a bit boring, but he is very thorough, learned a lot more history than I ever did back in high school.
Prof. Curry is absolutely amazing and I definitely recommend taking his class. He is very sweet and very witty and he is very knowledgeable about history. The TAs are also very helpful. I made an A on all the exams and got an A in the class and all I did was listen to his lectures, read the overheads and read the textbook occasionally. Loved it!
I would suggest taking Hopkins for HIST 1376. Curry is pretty easy if you put in some work. If you try, you can get an A for sure. However, he's pretty boring. I dread going to class every day. The TAs are good. Pretty nice people, and nice graders as well. Attendance is mandatory, and you get bonus for coming as well. Lots of bonus opportunity.
Good teacher who really knows his stuff. The lectures can get boring from time to time, but the silver lining is that there's practically no textbook use. There was required reading for weekly discussions but I just looked up summaries online. IMPORTANT: Please don't buy the textbook the class requires; I've never used it and am on course for an A.
This professor may be sweet and all but his lectures are SO BORING, The test that he issues are very tricky when going to the discussions the TA's always said "there are two possible answers I will have to talk to Curry about it." I studied all month so I could pass the second exam and I failed it with a 66. DON'T TAKE HIM
BORING class! He has his notes online. I suggest printing these out and then taking your own notes. He does not use the textbook except for online quizzes for extra credit. His exam are SO hard and very specific. I would not take him again. His final is the toughest final I have had in college thus far. Take another professor if you can
I don't recommend this class, even if you take notes and review his online notes it won't help. I got out of this class with a "B" but that is only because the discussion grade saved me. I barely passed all the tests because they are intentionally confusing. Don't take it.
Very traditional, lectures with overhead slides. He is a sweetheart and very clear but his class can get boring. LOTS of extra credit if you do the Learnsmarts and for attendance. All I did to study was look over the notes, review given in lab, and the overhead slides he posts online. Remember his class is basically completely oral.
He is nice but boring. His lectures consist in him reading his notes out loud. Multiple choice exams with essay. TAs are nice and helpful. You have to take notes and study hard to get a good grade...
I love Dr Curry! I wasn't delighted that I had to take his class as it has nothing to do w/ my major but Streit (THE BEST T.A.!) was extremely helpful in focusing on test material. Curry has a trad. way of teaching w/ his 1 hr lectures but his pop culture references add a kick! The man loves his US HIST and that is evident. BTW, AAA 2 is freezing!
Just do the learnsmarts, attend all the classes and discussions. Participate with at least one comment at the discussion and study, study study. I did all the extra credits and attended everything and got a 96 even thought I got a 68 on the first test, 77 on the second, and an 89 on the final. Also your lowest test grade gets dropped.
Lectures are extremely boring so make sure to sit in the front. If u know that u'll be falling asleep then don't take him bc TAs will count u absent. Do the learnsmarts for extra credit, ask questions in the discussions. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! He drops the lowest score from the tests since you take 4 exams.
I currently take his class. I thin it all consists of taking notes and studying. STUDY hard and you'll do good. Also, do the learn smarts they are EXTRA CREDIT and they are easy! not really easy class but it's not that bad.
Dr. Curry is an amazing professor and inspires me to become a history teacher. He's knowledgable, passionate, and kind. His class is mostly listening and taking notes, but if you write down most of the things he says and pay attention, you'll get an easy A. I did not do any of the extra credit and got over a 100. Streit is the best TA ever!
Theres times during the lectures where you can barely hear him (depends where you sit). lectures are a bit boring and take lots of notes even the stuff he is saying .learnsmarts are extra credit so do them
Professor Curry is the cutest man ever. He's old but manages to crack jokes every now and then about Miley Cyrus or some other slightly relevant pop star. Multiple choice exams included questions directly from Professor Curry's mouth so write down everything! Assigned seats and attendance sheet.
His lectures are long and boring. This class is the bane to my existence...
This class was a very difficult class to pass. Although curry is a nice guy I think he is too old to be teaching. I could never pay attention to the lectures or keep myself awake. He is very soft spoken and I never got down information. The teaching assistants are nice and helpful. Prepare to receive reviews that don't help you at all on the exams
His lectures are very boring! He's a bit old-fashioned in his teaching methods. Tests can be quite tricky but depends on how well you know the material. He offers more than enough extra credit! I received a "B" but I deserved that grade. The lectures were tedious and I didn't enjoy his class! But an A is possible!
I didn't know anything about American History (I'm an intl student) and got 95&99 on the midterms. Go to class and listen carefully. Lectures are long but PAY ATTENTION, that's the key to doing well on the tests. Do your reading assignments since a few question come from the book. Up to 8.5p EC. Not an easy class, but I learned a lot and enjoyed it
very interesting class. Take very good detailed notes in class. Test is 90 percent of lecture. The rest of the test is based on the lab and novels. If you study the review and have good notes you should get an A. There is an written essay every test but isn't too hard.
Dr. Curry is a nice man and very knowledgeable. Exams were based largely off his lectures and they were outlined well so it's easy enough to go back and read on. Dr. Curry said that his idea was to help you understand history and think critically about it with your own conclusions. I think he did a great job of this. I would recommend his class.

don't take him if you have no interest in history. he is BORING! and the TAs are even worse. Its cumulative and he's a tough grader. DO NOT TAKE HIM. This class ruined my GPA.
I think that he is the best history teacher I have had! I never liked history , but I have made A's on the previous exams, and that is because he is a great instructor that gets to the smallest detail in history. He is very respectful and nice! Just read your notes and you'll be fine for exams!
Professor Curry gives long lectures but it's not hard to follow. There is 2 tests and a final. The test are about 30 questions with an essay. Before each test he handouts a paper with about 25 possible topics for the essay but you get to choose from 4 on the test. During the labs each week a reading assignment and discussion questions are due.
I don't care much for this professor. His lectures are very old fashioned-his lectures mainly consist of him standing in front of the class on the podium speaking, with the occasional overhead projection for important topics. Tests are manageable. I was sick for a test and didn't get a make up and still ended with a B+ so an A is manageable.
Talks for the WHOLE hour and FEW overhead slides. Don't expect to get out early! Not for visual learners. You're just listening to him talk and taking down whatever notes you can catch. TA's grade tests. The books are for discussions, so if you don't plan on going, you don't need to get them (they WILL be mentioned on tests). AAA1 is freezing!
He lectures from beginning to end every class. He never cancels class. His tests are based off of what he specifically lectures. For example half of his questions start off as, "According to Dr. Curry" He is a very smart man, but his expectations are very high. I don't recommend taking him because their are way easier options.
Hard class, He makes the class long and very boring. Took this class because it was required for my major. You have to take detailed notes and pay attention the whole class!! If you mentally drift off you will get destroyed. Tests are pretty hard but the TA's are pretty helpful.
Outstanding Course presented by a knowledgeable Professor! Lectures are long and take up the entire period, however that is what an education is about, LEARNING! I marked an easy A, but I took a lot of notes and quite a bit of studying to get a good grade! Ta assigned was superb as well, made the discussion class informative and relevant!
I took Dr. Curry's class for my freshman year history course and I loved him! I read a lot of reviews that people thought he was boring and though his voice is monotone, but he's actually pretty funny. He's superrr old but that means he has a lot of good stories. My class was large and we had 3 TA's grading is dependent on what TA's you have.
This class was BRUTAL. I'm not a big history person, but exams were difficult. A lot of reading in group discussions which meet once a week. HIS LECTURES ARE EXTREMELY BORING!! He is probably the oldest professor at UH. Take another professor if you can.
A lot of people like him but I personally did not. I'm not a history person at all so I found his class very difficult. He starts his lecture at the exact minute the class starts and doesn't stop until the last minute. The earliest we got out was 2 min early. He is pretty funny but has a soft monotone voice making the long lectures very boring.
BORING LECTURES!! The tests are based primarily on the book but if you aren't a history inclined person you will struggle! Attendance is counted and it so hard to be motivated to go.
His lectures are very boring but they are very helpful as well. Better make a huge effort and pay attention to the whole lecture because tests cover what he presents on them. He offers learnsmarts for extra credit, and I recommend doing them because besides being 5 points on final average, they help you stay up topic and help prepare for the tests.
Professor Curry's class consists of him reading off of his notes for the entire hour with few overhead slides which gets boring so make sure you come energized or bring coffee to class or something. If you study well enough for the tests (2+Final), read the books for the discussions, and do the learnsmarts for EC, an A is definitely achievable.
So this professor is old fashioned "stand and lecture with few slides," so LISTENING is key! With that he's taught this class for 40 years, so he knows exactly what to say to get you to understand (Hence why his lectures sound a little scripted). He assigns 3 different books to read, but if you read them, you will understand his lectures even more
Probably one of the most concise and well thought out lectures i've ever had. Professor Curry molds a narrative of American History and his lectures follow that point until the last one. Of course if you have no interest in History it may be boring, but it's very admirable that he's put so much passion into this narrative. Overall solid class.
His teaching style is very old school. Classic lecture style, but what makes his quality ones is the breadth of knowledge that he has and how well his points come together. It is worth putting everything down and just listening and absorbing the material. It's important to attend the lecture and labs and know the material for the essay questions.
His teaching style is straight to the point, no bs. His lectures are pretty informative with few overhead slides so pay attention. Take good notes during lecture, read the books Dr. Curry assigns and you'll be good on the tests. TA's will be there to clear something up if you need help
