He's so funny! aha! Im laughing! I just started the class, but he seems very enthusiastic about his work. He acts like Mike Myers when Mike Myers pretends to be British. He says "drarings" instead of drawings. He's good and funny for now, I'll come back to grade him when im done with the class.
He is a great English professor. You really "learn" something from him, but not just trying to get your grade to transfer. His class may not be easy, but it's definitely fun and challenging.
Wow! Loved the class. Dr. Driscoll is passionate and enthusiastic about english, you can't help but get caught up in the passion. He is there for you and will help you every step of the way. English is a required class, and Dr. Driscoll is a required professor!
This guy is a perfectionist, but he knows he is hard so he grades fairly. No homework, only 3 essays in class basically asking central issues of poet. final 30 factual questions about all poetry, and reading. One novel, wuthering heights which is confusing. class time boring. but nice guy.
PRof Driscoll is great!! His class wasn't the easiest I took at SMC, but at least it gave me a lot. Higly recommended. Will take English 2 with him.
Awesome teacher! He's great with all the students as long as you're nice. I never missed a class, but I didn't do too well on the essays. I progressed my writing skills from his help and ended up with a B in class. Go to class on time, pay attention, be nice, ask for help, and you'll definitely get a good grade. I ADORE YOU LAWRENCE DRISCOLL!!
I loved his English 1 class so much that i'm taking English 2 with him. He is a hard teacher & he expects alot in terms of quality of work. He is very helpful though & will spend the time with you if you ask for it. He expects attendence everyday, but is not a jerk about it. Be warned though he has a very British sense of humour and is like a milde
GREAT Prof & Good personality. His love for english rubbed off on me. Do the reading, come prepared & HE WILL HELP YOU. I learned a lot & would take him again if I hadn't already fulfilled all my english reqs. Don't take him if you want the easy road & no work -> Don't do that to him or yourself. I have an A-> You can do it too! ^_^
Not only has the UK blessed us with Coldplay, The beatles, and that hottie Prince Harry, we can now add Dr. Driscoll to the list. His class was by no means easy, however, it WAS helpful and fun. This man is a great teacher. Come ready to work and take constructive criticism, and you'll have no problem. I can't wait to take another class with him
Driscoll is hard and does expect a lot but believe me i have never learned so much from a teacher in my life. really cares about the student and does all he can to help. if you wanna actually get an education and better at writting take him
I actually had Lawrence as a freshman at USC, some years ago - but I never forgot him. He was simply the best, funniest, most illuminating teacher I ever had. Introduced me to so many new authors, concepts and philosophies.
Guy was kind of an ****.. made the students feel insignificant. Its no wonder half the class droped out before the end of the semester.

An amzing prof. he makes u love lit. even more b/c u learn to understand what u read better. he wants u 2 do well and is very helpful. hes hysterical and makes class fun at 8am and is very animated. the best prof. i've had so far my fav. class wish i could have it everyday. complex yet he makes sure u understand it. nice guy + individual attention
Great teacher so far. Definetly keeps your attention in class.
i'm in love with this man! i took one of his classes just "for fun." my goodness! but the love for english does rub off!
can be excellent, but if you really do need help, try to avoid the couple of adoring students who inappropriately wait for him outside before office hours, class, as well as after class every day and still cannot manage to complete most of the work.
If he taught all of my classes, I'd make Dean's list.
Professor Driscoll is an excellent teacher. He makes sure you stay on task and makes sure you always understand the assignments. As long as you try, and he sees it he will assist you with everything. I loved the class!
Really cares about his students learning. He helped me to read critically and improved my writing skills. He has been known to do headstands in class if you answer tough questions correctly. Highly recommended.
im not sure if we r talking bout the same pro. b/c he is not at all easy, we spent 1 month doing our first essay. no1 in the class got an A,i and every 1 else in the class tried really hard to do well on the papers, but it almost seemed impossible.
He has a sincere desire to teach, but his strictness is sometimes mean spirited and sadistic.. take advantage of office hours and tutoring, so that he knows how much you are really trying and he will make sure that you improve.
He's an arrogant prof but he knows what he's doing and is super passionate about it. He's sometimes unreasonable if you get on his bad side, but sincerely wants to teach and help you out. His class is pretty hard, but as long as you keep up with the work you should be okay.
longest paper is 6 pages double typed.funny guy.will destroy your essay with comments because he wants his tudents to learn.gives about 5 essays and 1 research paper.quizzes are fill in the blank(pretty difficult).
He's a very competent, knowledgable teacher but is a difficult grader. His quizzes are quite hard. As for his summer classes, he is a breeze. There are many extra credit opportunities, the quizzes are kind, and there are no in-class essays.
Extremely intelligent, very approachable and very passionate about his work. His quizzes are a bit touch but he teaches students to think outside the box and REALLY learn. He's definitely an A++++++. Highly recommend him. Do take him!
Interesting teacher. Goes into the time periods. In class essays only. Not difficult so long as you use Magill on Lit. in smc library data base. Highly recomend if you don't want to die of bordom learning about Lit. Read and know definitions to all words before you go to class or he gets pissed.
he seems to be easy at the beginning then as time passes by and you write the essays you realize that he is very strict... i thought i was gonna get a C maximum a B... but i got an A, i think is because he saw that i was trying my best and that i was really trying to improve my writing skills .. and i did ..take it if u want to improve ur writing
You can learn about real and sophisticated writing. Highly recommend, especially transfer studies AA students. He is a great professor, very passionate about teaching and help students sincerely. A lot of extra credit opportunities. It’s difficult but you keep doing. While English is my second language, I could get A. I was surprised!
The way he wants his students to write is elementary. He forces you to begin every essay with "I" which is fine and all, but it leaves nothing to the imagination. It is like watching a Steven spielberg movie, boring and everything is right there for you to lap up. Lazy and mainstream;you are guided by Harvard rules of writing which I find stuffy
Lawerence is my favorite teacher of all time! That being said, he is not for everyone. His English 1 class is simply murder but you really learn to write (do not take if you want an easy A). English 2 is much easier. He is also histerically funny & 5 ppl from English 1 took him again for English 2, so if you like him you love his class & vice versa
Great teacher. He really has a way of guiding you through the writing process.
Driscoll is such a wonderful teacher, he is willing to help you understand the material until you finally get it. Don't be afraid to approach him. He just makes English fun!
This teacher is very funny but also strict when it comes to writing, I would recommend not to take this class during winter or summer because he pushes you really hard and there is not much time to catch up if you get behind. he can also be very critical of your writing but is overall a good listener and understandable

I must say this class is not easy. If you want to have a happy life, don't go for it. I could have done so much better without working less harder and gotten an A if I had chosen other prof. But now it's too late, I got my first C and lost an oppotunity to go to school that I wanted. This class ruind my life.
Handed out a Shakespeare Sonnet on day one and asked us to analyize it on paper. Immeadiately lumped everyone into the same category--NOT UNDERSTANDING the Sonnet (even though I did and wrote that it was about a man so beautiful he looked like a woman). He skimmed over the papers and saw what he wanted to see (poor reading skills). I want a Prof w/
Dr. Driscoll is the most incredible teacher. He is kind, inspiring, so caring, so funny...and a genius. Learning is, as it should be, an absolute pleasure! He has taught me the value of a cultivated mind. He has made me believe that the pursuit of knowledge is the key to a joyful, meaningful life. A true educator, he draws the best out of students.
No mistake, this a very dense class, but Dr. Driscoll explains the material very well and goes over it in class, so pay attention and read the books and you should do just fine. Do BEWARE of his "student fanclub" who take all of his classes and hang around to praise him because you'll never get a word in with him if they're around.
Careful, he writes his own reviews here! He assumes you are ignorant and dumb because you are at a JC instead of a 4 year. He can't get past his own preconceived notions & ideas and prejudices aobut you as a class. If you have a low opion of yourself then he is for you. If you belive in your abilities and desire more takne someone else

Beware... Driscoll is very selective and manipulative especially when deciding on who he "wants" to help. The same certain special ones always seem to need and receive an incredible amount of time and attention, while some in the class are left to feel insignificant and to fend for themselves.
He is funny and I learned a lot in his class, BUT he is hard! He is not a typical Engl professor...his expectations are high, but the truth is higher standards is what makes you to become a better writer. I'm happy I took his class but he just dropped me from class and I recieved a W. SO DON't expect EASY A.
Dr. Driscoll is cool, he wrote a book "Reconsidering Drugs" so you know he's not close-minded. He does read essays in front of class but gives you constructive criticism in a positive way to help improve your writing. Its not an easy class but is fun and rewarding. I didn't do very well on the quizes/exams and pulled a B. His fans do suck though.
Highly recommend for someone who really wants to learn English. Dr. Driscoll is very helpful to everybody. You will learn a lot after finish his class. But you have to work really hard because he pushes you to do better and better.
i found him to be a good teacher, but honestly i wanted to smack him half the time. he never says what you did right on your essays, and spends soo much time critiquing each students essay, that sometimes you dont get to the material. i wouldnt suggest taking his evening class, i think he tends to be grumpy at that time.
Driscoll is a wonderful man and a good teacher. His English 2 class was difficult for me, but that doesn't mean I didn't learn. I learned how to really write an essay, and if that's what you're looking for, take this charismatic and extremely nice professor.
Dr. Driscoll is a great English professor. He pushed me to write much better essays, and now I know I can handle classes at UC. Includes helpful context for the literature in the art & history of the period. His educational background is stellar; his depth of knowledge is awe-inspiring. You must work hard for an A. He is demanding, but fair & kind.
If you can't write more than perfect inclass essay in 20 mins, you should not take his class. He tests you constantly besides the midterms which dig into trivial details. I'm transferring to UC school from this fall, and his class was the only class I got C. My friends took other prof and got better grades than me, and they were like "What happened
Dr. Driscoll assigns dense literature and gives exams hard enough to make one's eyes bleed, but after nearly two years at SMC, I've never had a professor who was more fair in his grading or more concerned about his students' welfare: he truly wants you to succeed, and helps all who ask. Thanks for being amazing, Dr. Driscoll; I'll miss your classes.
Garbage! I am telling this to you for your own benefit. He is the most frustratingly self-loving individual. Worse professor I have ever taken. You will have a minute chance of ever getting a good grade. For your own sake, DO NOT TAKE. He writes the positive reviews himself.... everyone I know hates this guy. Good Luck, Try Professor Pope instead.
What a stupid choice I did for the fall06. I haven't even learned any****. ****, he is not helpful, doesn't even give me a clue how to do the assingments. Very unclear, the worse choice I have have. If somebody read this message pls, Can you recommend me a professor for English2 I''ll appreciate you. Take him if you want to get a F,D. BS
very good teacher. Do not take him if you are looking for an easy A, do take him if you want to learn and love to read poetry.
Best English professor! Really helps students when they need help. Makes you like the subject probably b/c of his accent ;]
I think he's a good teacher. He can be sarcastic so if you can't handle that go elsewhere. He does assign a lot of essays it seems, but he'll help you if you ask him for it. Only about halfway through the semester, we'll see if my opinion changes. He's got a hot accent at any rate, British, tally ho.
BEST ENGLISH PROF. AT SMC!!!! And not too bad on the eyes, I might add. He's so nice, interesting, witty, and really enjoys teaching. The only reason why someone might not like him is because he doesn't take any crap. He's honest and fair in his grading and you really learn a lot about lit. I say go for it and take this class!
Cares more about making a deadline than his students. Completely changed the second half of the semester by tripling the work just to make this deadline; his concern for the effects on his students was a distant thought.
he is a horrible teacher who spends over half the semester having you write an essays from a 60 page book, spends too much time on unnecessary material, is very rude, likes to point out students in class, and honestly is full of****.
Do no take English with this guy. His instructions are vague. His instructions may contradict other instructions. He contradicts himself. He's very opinionated. He's of little or no help if you ask for it, you'll most likely end up in an argument. Don't oppose his views, or you may end up failing the class no matter how good you write.
Well. I will be honest- Driscoll is a great teacher to be taught by. Easy workload, it gets tiring after a while, but nonetheless, not much work. 5 essays (EASY!) Easy quizzes. Helpful... I learned that it was okay to use "I" in my papers. He's brutally honest, sometimes to the point of irritation, a bit eccentric LOL Do your work, you'll be okay.
Entertaining presentation with historical background. Helpful, but some must be determined, as well as, past a few of his "inspired" fans, who are always around after class or in Eng. dept, compromising the scholastic environment. It is unfortunate when he uses his wit and charm , which can make learning a pleasure, to be manipulative or cruel.
Im going to take him for the scholars program English 2. I hear he is indeed tough, but worth it. I have spoken to him several times and so far he's been more helpful than probably any other outside of class professor besides McKeown, so I say...TAKE HIM!
Good professor. Quizzes are very easy if you read the material before hand. Light homework load, mostly just reading. Sometimes moves slow and crams the rest of the material in the last few weeks of the semester.
Driscoll may seem hard, but If you ask him to help you, he's very compassiate and you can tell he cares about the students and loves teching.Makes poetry fun, and is a funny guy who methods are hard(ALOT of work, but no homework, just quizzes). Must go to class. I really don't care what I got in his class, I just know I will have learned alot.
tons of reading. if you're gonna take him make sure you take some easy classes b/c you'll be spending lots of time on his readings. attendance is mandatory (you get points taken off) and there is no grade leniency(curves, ec, etc.). Advice to those that are gonna take him: learn to memorize everything and ALWAYS make sure you drink some coffee
Hysterical. Informative. Interested. Open. Don't listen to the bad reviews, because he is a gem. He does lack compassion and is ANAL about spelling, though. He doesn't expect you to know everything, but he does expect you to put in the effort. By far my fav prof at SMC. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. You will LEARN from him. Great for English Majors.
Great teacher! Caring and loves to teach. There for his students. Extremely clear in his lectures! Quizzes are pretty easy. Attend lectures, take notes, and you'll surely get an A!
Funny and energetic, very helpful, very patient, great teacher.
An encyclopaedia of knowledge, with lectures both entertaining and informative. Believes in knowledge for its own sake, rather than simply for a grade, and expects historical and literary rigor in students. (This is college!) Discusses the big picture rather than plodding, pedestrian-like through the text. All English profs should follow his lead!
So marvellous of a professor, he made me love James Joyce. Enough said.
Dr. Driscoll has gone through more than any of us, and he teaches with passion b/c simply,English is his subject. I wud retake his classes if I cud. His accent is sexy haha..Above all he has the friendliest of attitudes for his students!
He claims that he's trying to teach us to break out of the mold and use our opinions and those of others, but I really felt like this was just simply a regurgitation of the book, which is at 6th grade comprehension&the damn Harvard Writing tools, which weren't useful at all! He is a smart ass and if you are genuinely lost you will be left that way!
He is very funny, and an awesome teacher. Take his class if you really want to learn! and he is very fair with grading! Must take, and if your lucky you will see his owl impersonation!
He is one of the kindest and wittiest people I have ever met. He fills the class with great energy and passion. His class is time-consuming, you can't just skim through the literature. His lectures are interesting, and the ideas he pulls out of them can be applied to various subjects. He believes in his students, and inspires them to find truths.
I've take English 2 and currently English 6 with the old buzzard. I will be taking English 17 and English 3 with once again, the old buzzard. I can not say whats with the guy, but sometimes I wonder what he's trying to do. He makes it too easy for English majors, but expects perfect grammar, which worries me. Should make him work, the old buzz^^
He is really cool, i am able to handle his class(I hate English). There ain't any essay required, the exams are focused on your understanding of the poems and short stories. I strongly suggest to take him!! But if you are really religious, don't take him, he will attack Christians lol!!
Excellent! The most exciting, energetic, funny, and happy class I have--my first semester in college, and is the one I learn most in in shortest amt of time. He is a wonderful teacher, analyzes the Shakespeare with clarity and wit, and does not require the expensive book. Gives website from where to print poems/literary works, and helps all student
very clear with his instructions and will help you write your essays. to me he was an easy A, just show up to class, know your stuff and know how to phrase yourself correctly. if your grammar is poor and you are skimping on the assignment of course you will get a bad grade. get on his good side and make sure he knows who you are. very friendly.
I had Driscoll in 1999 and absolutely hated his class. He was more concerned with ridiculing students than helping them.
Big mistake. Ultra-academic, wants only dry analytical papers. The only opinion that matters is his. I was expecting to read some good Brit. Lit. but all we actually read is a book on the history of England. Very hard tests. All lecture, no discussion. Class started out with 30 people and ended with like 7.
Driscoll deserves a decoration from the Queen, for inspiring several students, notably some foreign,to develope an obsession with taking any of his English Lit.classes, within the semesters'first three weeks! Very Controversial but competent.Interesting class if constant, obvious, self-serving disruptions and unethical behaviors don't bother you.
Dr. Driscoll's knowledge is astounding. He exposes us to films and readings, etc. His tests are hard and he has a high expectation of the students but he is a really HUMANE teacher, allowing for imperfection as long as you are really trying and doing the work. Best teaacher, best class so far. (He even provided a Xerox of the book we use.)
Hated this class. We didn't even read any British Literature. Dislikes his students. I got a C and I'm an A student.
HE IS ONE OF THE SMARTEST TEACHERS IN SMC..BUT HE IS VERY STRICT!!!HE IS A HARD GRADER TOO!! I SPENDED MOST OF MY NIGHTS JUST WRITTING HIS ESSAYS BUT I LEARNED A LOT IN HIS CLASS AND IT WAS WORTH IT!!!! TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT THE CHALLENGE!!
He's got the super sense of humor that comes from being an Englishman,a great way of explaining the poetry through drawings on the board, and really treats his students like mature people who are capable of understanding-you must not be a baby. Quizzes often, 20 pts each. Talks lots of unnecessary politics which make Conservatives uncomfortable.
GREAT PROFESSOR! I WISHED I WOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM FOR ENGLISH 1. EASY AT FIRST BUT GETS HARD TOWARDS THE END OF SEMESTER. HE IS ENTERTAINING AND HELPFUL! HIS BRITISH ACCENT DOESNT HURT EITHER... SUPER HOT!!;) HAHA
Prof. Driscoll challenges his students to take the trash out of their thoughts. His class is a great eye-opener. Take him if you want to see.
He's very "witty" but it gets old quick when he turns on the students. Not so much a literature class as it is a history class. A lot of people dropped.
Driscoll is a smart man but he isn't a good teacher. He doesn't respect his students very much and doesn't even seem to enjoy teaching. I wish he spent more time on teaching literature than demeaning his students. He rants a lot about plagiarism and how lazy his students are.
Great Teacher!!! Tells you exactly what to expect on tests and quizzes. Just be in class. Attendance is very important. He wants to see that you are making an effort. Extremely fun and helpful. Such a great teacher.
Driscoll is an ignorant, rude man. He hates Christians and bashes religion every chance he gets. I don't care that he doesn't like religion, I just wish he had some respect for his students. He is very offensive.
He seems to know a lot of information but isn't concerned much with teaching. Hates his students aside from a few brown nosers. Hardest A I ever earned and least worth it.
such a COOL TEACHER! his classes are not only helpful, but are lots of fun! he's explaining everything in a very easy and funny manner. BUT you have to really put a lot of time and energy into writing! for the quizzes you have read VERY CLOSE, it's not just understanding of the concept, but memorasing all little words (you'll see why)
Dr. Driscoll is a GREAT professor, But he will push you, sometimes to the limit. So if your a little sensitive to the touch then he might not be the instructor for you but one things for sure, He will help you learn how to write. If you want to grow as a writer, I would recommend him.
I saw lots of comments saying that he doesn't like students. let me clarify something. He donesn't like lazy students. If he says "write 10 pages", do exactly 10! just do whatever he says to do, otherwise he'll make fun of you. but overall he loves hardworking students and he is GREAT TEACHER! LAWRENCE, YOU ROCK!
It's a love/hate relationship with Driscoll. One day you want to hug him, the next you want to wring his neck. At first he might seem like an extremely difficult teacher, but he's actually pretty lenient on grading when he knows you've done your best. You certainly learn a lot, but you have to keep an extremely open mind.
Makes you take on a whole new style of writing, which is not easy to adjust to. Not a bad teacher, but not recommended for those looking for an easy "A". Although English isn't my strongest subject, this was the hardest "A" I worked for this semester. Gives you the recources you need to do well in the class. Not a bad teacher at all, just not easy.
Best English teacher I have had. Interested in his subject as well as keeping the class entertained. Very understanding about late work or rescheduling. Only person I know with the ability to quote both Shakespeare and South Park in the same sentence. Makes the subject very interesting and translates archaic language into "student speak."
A teacher who actually wants students to come away with knowledge of British history and literature. Very knowledgeable in literature as well as current culture. Watch South Park, he does and he'll often make references to the show in class.
He's not the easiest professor. He introduces a whole different style of writing and it's definitely complicated in the beginning. He is very straight forward and will tell it like it is, and it can be very harsh at times, especially in the beginning of the semester. Once the semester gets going, though, the class is much more chill.
A dedicated proffesor that is very blunt in his teaching and might be misunderstood as intimidation. Is a hard class but a very good challenge. you will learn a lot n have fun too.
At first i thought Driscoll was hard and out of his mind...but then he grew on me and overall I enjoyed the class. It was a really hard class but Prof. Driscoll has good intentions.
Professor Driscoll is very tough and is adamant in students figuring stuff out for themselves. He's encouraging and a great teacher and has a great method of teaching. We only watched movies and wrote about those, not lame politics or old books, it was a lot of fun. Driscoll enjoys originality from his students, but not bad grammar, be warned.Got A
Amazing teacher; learned plenty of writing skills(scholars.) Textbook is so small so don't fret! He has a really amusing English Accent and all the essays are on interesting topics. Definitely will take effort and time. DON'T SLACK OFF. I did everything last minute and ended with a B but I didn't sleep for a week. I'm taking him for Eng 2 definitel
Great teacher! Cares about his students but you have to do the work. I recived an A but I worked hard in his class. Not an easy A, but still a good professor.
Avoid him if you are an international student. Most of them struggle with his quizzes and he have to curve it so that to minimize the number of people who fail in the class. Doesn't mean no essays means its an easy class. You are better off with other professors if English is not your first language. Good luck! :)
i highly recommend driscoll. essays are interesting and fun to write, he's a big nerd. classes are entertaining, he's very intelligent. exams (there are 3 or 4) are very hard though, read introductions thoroughly. actual reading assignments are not always necessary. i can't believe how many people said he was hot. cute, at best. sorry driscoll.
Terrific teacher. Very keen, and very relaxed. Wants you to learn and - if he thinks you are both working and learning - will cut you lots of slack. If you just want to do nothing and get a good grade, don't bother. He is there to teach and won't let you waste your or his time. He is one of the stars of the SMC English Dept.
Prof. Driscoll is the best professor I have ever had in my life.. He really cares about his students and wants them to learn with his best connotations.. I took his scholars class and learned a lot. Essay topics are fun and close to reality. If you want to learn, take him. Highly recommended. :)
Great professor!
Professor Driscoll has expectations from his students. He is there to teach what we do not know. I did not find his class to be the easiest class ever, but Driscoll is more than willing to help at anytime. If your coming from 21B, he will seem like a hard a**, but I promise it is totally worth it! TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT TO LEARN!
Top Notch Professor. Consider yourself lucky at SMC to have an instructor of this quality. If you want to learn a lot more than just the basics then take this challenging but fair class. It pushes you to think and gave me much more than just your average english class
He is absolutely an amazing professor!! He picks out really interesting authors and poems to read, it will make you see literature in a whole DIFFERENT WAY!He is really helpful when you have questions and you can tell he wants his students to succeed. He pushes you and thats what i love the best about him. plus, he has a really cool english accent.
Professor Driscoll is one of the best professors I have had at SMC. The class is pretty easy as long as you read, READING IS EVERYTHING in his class. If you dont read you'll fail for sure. For the spring semester he usually gives three midterms and three essays (due on day of midterm) and for summer he gives weekly quizzes on the material.
If you work hard, you can get an A. Reading is everything! Has a crude mouth and does insert his political views into random spots in the reading so beware! I enjoyed this English class more than others I have taken because he is clear about instructions and what he expects out of the class.
The best teacher I had at SMC! Read the assigned texts, always be in the class, listen to him = you've got A! And even better - he is incredibly funny. I really recommend him :)))))))))))
Prof.Driscoll is one of the best English professors I have ever had. He is very funny and friendly. When you talked to him you feel like you're talking with your classmate. He wants to help all of his students. Just show him your interest on subject. You will enjoy his lectures. (Will continue)
He really invests time in making sure that his students learn and get what he's teaching. He is very friendly and totally understanding. He's a great professor and as long as you put the effort and show him that your trying your best, it's definitely easy to get that "A"!! :)
HE is simply the best..I took Eng 1 and now taking ENG 2, He is crystal clear and very helpful, He really wants you to learn so that you could explain any piece of Literature with ease.SUPER NICE ..Take him if you have a chance :)LOVE HIM
When person does what he enjoys that shows!! GREAT TEACHER!!!
He is the best english teacher I have had in my educational career. He is clear and concise, gives you everything you need to know for the test. He expects you to know everything and gives you no excuse not to. Do not mess around during his class; he gives you all his attention, he wants yours too. Great guy, MUST TAKE
Prof. Driscoll is a very intelligent teacher, but he expects his students to try. He will be relentlessly unkind to those who are obviously not interested in bettering themselves, which provides hours of amusement for those who are. Very funny teacher, and helpful if you're willing to ask for help. His office hours are pivotal if you're struggling.
Prof.Driscoll is the best English teacher I had at SMC. The first thing he did for us, is to summarize the textbook in 55 pages. So, we didn't have to pay $100. He is an easy grader, you will enjoy his class. He helps his students. My major is acting, and he even helped me with my accent. Great teacher. He loves his job!!!STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!
This was a very helpful class thanks to Dr. Driscoll. Highly recommended -- unless you're a total slacker or don't want to learn. I also advise not to wait till the last night to finish the essays...
Really funny and nice person. Just listen to him in class and don't be annoying and piss him off. He'll explode at you! Easiest class I have ever taken. Little to no reading whatsoever. Might not have learned a whole lot but very easy A! Highly reccomend.
If you can write well, actually, if you can follow directions well, this class is very easy. He is very approachable, so don't be afraid to ask for help, he doesn't mind repeating himself. Don't wait until the last minute to do the papers and you will be fine. I would recommend him as a teacher. The English accent is charming!
Professor Driscoll is an amazing teacher. I took him for both English 1 & 2. I learned how to write in English 1 and how to read in English 2. The 6- and 10-page papers are tough because you have to come up with your own thesis. He gives you a general topic but you write on what you want to write about. Take his class if you want a challenge.
Driscoll is a very good teacher. He is clear and concise and is very "visual" in his lectures. But he is EXTREMELY rude . If you are caught doing something that irritates him, he will viciously humiliate you in front of the entire class. And I mean VICIOUSLY.I seriously fear that some students are psychologically affected by the extreme humiliation
... VERY VERY VERY RUDE. Makes everyone feel stupid. Degrades people. I'm not sure if this is his way of reverse pyschology or what, but everytime I leave his class I feel like someone just took the life out of me. Be ready for critizism
Driscoll's teaching methods are very clear. If you do the reading you will get an A. This class sparked my interest in english literature. BPD
His accent makes him extremely easy to listen to, along with being easy on the eyes. Though, no professor, nor class, has EVER made me feel this STUPID. Honestly, he makes me feel dumb as dirt...i am NOT dumb as dirt. -_- I was soooo excited for this class, and i still love every minute of it. I just wish i could participate more.
uninspiring. we studied the historical context of the literature instead of studying THE LITERATURE. the class was taught wrong, and thus, do not recommend. great class, wrong professor. take with someone else.
Honestly if you can avoid him, do so. I have never been made to feel so incredibly STUPID in my entire life. He thinks if you're in this class you're an English major...and not everyone is. There is absolutely no emphasis on understanding the literature. This class is really a test of your memorization skills. Would definitely not recommend him.
At first, I found Professor Driscoll intimdating. However, I hung in the class, did the work, and got a B. Note, his test are anxiety provoking. I found it difficult to sleep the night before one of his test. In the final analysis, I am very happy with my experience in his class. I really got my money and times worth with Prof. Driscoll.
At first i thought he was gonna be very hard and mean to us because i took him in summer but actually he proved me wrong. He is so funny! he helps you by giving you the answers during the quizzes and the final. As long as you listen to his lectures your all good to go. He recommends taking english 2 in 6-8wks because the class can be dreadful.
First of all, if you want to get easy grade, i hope you not to take this class ever! Never take this class! His class is hard, tough, gives a lot of homeworks,assignment,etc.... He never tell you to do any stuff before you ask. Most of students get C or rarely B. Almost nobody got A.... Please do not take this class. You will regret it.
Driscoll is by far one the best English teachers I've ever had @ SMC, very passionate about his teaching and is there if u need help. Wouldn't call it an easy A, but if u ask for help/go to his office hours, he will get u through the hard material covered. I am going to take English 2 with him in the Winter.
Kiriyeeee yani vagean kiriyeeee !!!!
His class is not easy and he may seem that he'll want to make you rip your hair out, but trust me, Driscoll really knows his stuff and is there to help you every step of the way, take his class you WON'T regret it!
His class is not easy and he'll make you want to rip your hair out but trust me, Driscoll is there to help you every step of the way. He really knows his stuff and will do whatever it takes to make sure that you on track, take his class you won't be sorry!
AMAZING. he's CUTE, charming, and hilarious--and frankly, he's very lenient about the content of the tests and essays(lets the class dictate.) seriously, he makes the subject and literature really fun to read even when its from the middle ages. i will definitely be taking his other sections.
I will let you all know that this class is not easy A, if that's what you expect to get. You will be challenged by what he has to offer you for the semester, but he's a GREAT professor. Driscoll will help you change the way that you see English for writing and reading.
Very critical of all of your writings! Will read your writing errors out loud, if you get easily embarrassed, do not take! Overall knows his stuff and you do learn (if thats what your looking for). Not an easy A!
Mean little man and lazy. Misses class constantly and uses his own pathetic "textbook" for three readings--for $67.00! If you don't agree with him, you are humiliated in front of the class. Easy to believe that he is writing his own positive reviews here, which is what everyone says. Seems to genuinely hate students. Avoid, avoid avoid!
I understand why the person below totally dissed him cause he did miss 3 classes consecutively, BUT I beg to differ because he helped me out with my writing. I failed Eng 1 before & I am now passing his class. I recommend, but he's not for the faint hearted. Definitely an easy A if you ask for his help & go to his office hours.
He is a first rate educator of the highest quality & an entertaining, lively presenter, extremely insightful, articulate & knowledgeable. May be challenging depending on your strength & adaptability in English. He's invested in each student learning & improving, so no matter what your skill level, you must put in serious effort for a good grade.
Driscoll is a very good professor. He's not easy but his class is definitely worth the challenge. He may seem like a hard ass grading and teaching wise, but he really isn't. You must go to every class because he gives A LOT of important info about the current assignment. The whole semester is basically just spent writing essays and if you can complete the essays on time, you will have a great chance of passing his class with a good grade and also learning a lot once his class is finished.
unpleasant learning environment and strange way of teaching. Don't take him.
+He's charming, encouraging, and very helpful if you put a lot of hard work in. I struggled, and only took one other class. -He constantly belittles Christianity in a way that is inappropriate as he holds a great influence over his students. Still, I remember everything he taught me. He believes in his students, but must know you are serious. no bs
Driscoll is a GREAT professor. But, his class is TORTURE if English is not your first language. F-1 students will die in his class. It's English 2, what can you expect? He gives a quiz/test almost every class. He will humiliate you badly if you're grammar is not up to his standard (it's to be expected). No essays just literature quizzes and tests.
Prof. Driscoll is "fogging" amazing! Made us laugh the whole 3 hours of the class( yes, 8am Friday class!!!)Read the assigned literature and you will be fine! Extra credit quizes from the assigned poems were given very often. Didn't want to leave the class when the semester was over. "My lonny bun is fine, Benny Lava!" <3
Amazing professor, amazing class. I fell even more in love with English Lit.
Great professor. Very helpful and clear. Easy class as long as you do the reading!
Show ambition and respect for the class and professor then the same will be given. Even at times of struggle, he assisted me. It's pretty hard material but he makes it very comprehensive and thorough. He reviews exams and even assisted me during the exams. Much respect to him. Take him!
He is the best professor ever. English is not my first language and I do not like Middle English at all (you can just imagine why). In fact before his class I had never attempted to read it at all. Some how this was the only class available that I could take over winter and I loved every bit of it. I fell in love with every word I read.
He was hilarious and helpful. Didnt have to write any essays....just multiple choice quizzes. But he does get a bit preachy about religion and why he's so much better than everyone else because he is an Atheist. It got annoying after a while, but I still enojoyed his class
DRISCOLL IS MY FAV PROFESSOR AT SMC! He is British super funny and knows what he is talking about! Good stories..no essays and he is super entertaining! LOVE him. But if you are international do NOT take he can be kind of mean when it comes to grammar..
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! I am a math major who had very difficult time in writing essays and reading literature and he got me to understand Shakespeare. By far the BEST in SMC.
Took him for scholars class. His teaching style was one of the best I've had. He is very funny, compassionate and clear. The class material was enetertaining and rewarding.
Amazing professor! I laughed so hard during this class,he makes the material engaging and entertaining, and also puts a lot of emphasis on history so you feel like you understand the material even more. Just read and you will be fine. Multiple choice test,no essays, which I didn't like but a lot of people would prefer. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Driscoll is hilarious!! he makes class always so fun and is a teacher who you do not mind listen to speak! i loved his class mainly because he made it so fun. Besides that, the class was hard at first but in the end if you really try and make an effort it will show! great teacher, i would love to have him again!
He doesn't make you write enough essays, which seems like a good thing, until you realize it really isn't. The essays you write he asks you to support with literary criticism, but other professors will want only your own thoughts.
Driscoll is mediocre. He doesn't really teach anything he just gives VERY specific directions on how to write an essay in is 60 dollar book that you literally read 15 pages from. Then you write 3 essays (one of which he never reads) and if you follow is directions you get an A. easy and useless.
Now that I'm done with SMC, I can safely say Driscoll was the best professor I've had. He is incredibly caring and loves his students!! SO SO helpful, and won't ever turn a student away. These classes are all tests and no essays, and took him for 3,5, and 6! Driscoll is the BEST :D!
I had Driscoll for English 3 and 5 and I loved his classes! He is one of the nicest professors I've ever had, he really cares for his students. He's always helping out. He's hilarious, though his humor may offend some people. I really enjoyed having me. Take him! you will learn A LOT! Great for letters of rec. and personal statement help also!
I don't know why people are saying he cares about students. In my eyes, he did not even try to help at all. Trust me, there are way better professor at SMC. If you really want to improve your writing and build a good relationship with your professor, take a different teacher. Don't make a mistake like I did!
Driscoll You are so funny and we all love that accent! just nobody buy the book, we literally just used it once
One of my favorite teachers!! Took him for English 1 and 2 Scholars and loved him. It may seem unclear how to earn an A but as long as do all the work and show up to class you will be fine. Take Him!!
Hands down the best professor I've had in any English class. What makes professor Driscoll amazing is his way of breaking down the reading, because it then makes it so easy to understand when you read it again. I liked every aspect of the class, and it was great going to class everyday. Very funny, cares about students, and you learn a lot! Take!
best professor ever, the sweetest most helpful teacher ever. He breaks down all the reading and makes even the most boring poems super fun. Very accessible and will help you even if he thinks you may be even a little confused. Loved him!
this guy like to keep you on your toes one day he is the best professor ever the next he is the most intimidating.Go to his office hours that will help a lot,not only with the assignment but people that GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS tend to get an A in his class just by familiarizing yourself with him.
Pure ego, hes British and as a result he assumes we know nothing about writing, he only uses 16th century english poetry as his readings and essay topics which presents the main difficulty when writing thesis statements, its more about learning how to understand old english dialect than write an essay, no help, doesnt care, terrible professor
As long as you do the reading and make sure you know the vocabulary, passing the class with a satisfactory grade is not difficult. Reading comprehension is key to earning a good grade, he's also very helpful, so if you need help visit him during office hours.
Professor Driscoll is hilarious! He makes the difficult material interesting and easier to understand. I am forever indebted to this brilliant professor. Take his classes! You won't regret it!
The best professor in SMC. He cares about his students and tries to do everything for them to do well. I took scholar class and it was amazing. I didn't want my class to be over. Because of him I am going to take another English Literature class as well. If you wan to study and at the same time have maximum fun than pick him.
I had Driscoll for English 1 & 2, he's brilliant and entertaining. He goes to great lengths to make sure you understand the reading. The assigned reading is always interesting. Make sure you do the reading, he sometimes tests you on the reading without notice. I'm seriously considering taking English 3 with Driscoll.
Best professor ever!!!! Makes you think outside the box - that's an uncomfortable place, but is designed to make you THINK. No right or wrong answer, just whatever stance you take, be able to support it with the writings and/or cristizm. JUST WRITE THE ESSAYS. Taking ENG 2 with him, no doubt! Is available for counseling - or use the writing lab
Driscoll is a very entertaining teacher who will keep you on your feet. Prepare yourself for ALOT of embarrassment. This man is so harsh he will MAKE you feel dumb. AFTER all the EMBARASSMENT I received a B in his class and all my other classmates received A's. We barely use the book and write random essays. Make your choice people :)
This professor is AMAZING. He is hilarious. Beware he will call you out, and keep you on your toes. Which is the best. His exam's are so easy and best part he doesn't make you write any essays. Btw he gave us a take home final ;) and we had two other exams which were just translations of old English pieces, and some multiple choice questions.
DRISCOLL IS AMAZING- he makes reading exciting and really helps you prep for University level courses like UCLA. He is HILARIOUS. DO NOT MISS OUT THIS PROF is super knowledgeable and absolutely teaches you what independently you cannot. Easy way to fall in love with English, not an easy A, but attainable if you read a lot:)) Thanks Driscoll!!
If you want to fully comprehend literature from Renaissance to Contemporary, then he is the professor for you! He makes English FUN. And even more important, he cares and is passionate about literature and his students success. Learning about writers and the meanings behind their poems. Love him!!! Best professor ever!
Very helpful instructor. The first English class that I feel like I am learning how to write, not how my professor does not want me to write in the exams. Strongly recommended professor
BEST TEACHER I HAD AT SMC. TAUGHT ME SO MUCH. I LOOOOOVE HIM. TOOK HIM FOR BOTH ENG 1 and 2- kept class so interesting all the time. Im not an english major and I'm considering to take another english class just to have him as a teacher.
HE IS GREAT!
he is the best professor i have ever had. he is not like every other english teacher, he will exercise your brain using literature and make you think about poetry and literature in a different aspect that you didn't know existed. i loved his class. you truly have to put in hard work to ear your grade but at the end its worth it. Great man, love him
BEST CLASS !!!!!!! tip top professor!! Extremely caring and super clear, not to mention hilarious! You will need to read carefully though- but hey- thats the only way to learn! go to office hours- he is super helpful and approachable! if you dont take this class - you will be missing out on the best prof at smc!!!
SMC's best professor! I looked forward to every class, and wish he taught all my classes. He is a fountain of knowledge, hilarious, engaging, and besides that helpful and a genuinely good-hearted person. He expects you to work like a college student, not a 5th grader, so getting a good grade in his class is gratifying. Tip:bring a small dictionary.
Awesome teacher, but you won't better yourself if you don't read the book!
Took Eng 5 and 6 with him. It was the best informative, fun, and challenging English class I had taken at SMC. He doesn't make you write essays but when it comes to exams(either multiple choice or essay written)the answers will show in your knowledge of actually reading the book! Three exams for both classes. I'm at UCD now, his class helped.
Truly an amazing professor. Makes medieval literature exciting and the material in general easy to understand by relating it to pop culture. Was a little apprehensive at first, but see now he really just wants what's best for his students and wants us to succeedlearn as well. You'll never be bored. Just do reading and you'll be fine!! Reccomended
HAHAHA. Where do I even start on rating Dr. Driscoll. This man is a wonder! He will make you slave to earn the A, but in the end it was so worth going through the pain. My writing skills greatly improved due his tough love, criticism, and, well of course, his hilarious comedy skits he performs in class. If you are looking for an easy A this isnt it
Driscoll is amazing! One of the best and easiest english professors! He helps a lot if you ask for it and never disrespects a student. Go to office hours! Hes very busy in them, but extremely helpful. So kind and HILARIOUS! Take him! We laugh in class everyday and make fun of each other. Seriously the funnest teacher!
quick & sharp, witty, fantastically eloquent, super funny
FLAWLESS !!!! Driscoll was by far the best professor I have ever had. He challenged me and inspired me and I would definitely take his class again.
I got an A and I'm not even a good writer! Take him!
Professor Driscoll is a living legend, his passion for teaching and English literature is palpable at each of his classes, when I took English 6 I had no idea i was about to embark in a life changing journey, but here I am. Professor Driscoll is always cheerful, always funny, and always teaching. It's hard to sit down and NOT pay attention :)
Dr. Driscoll is a great teacher that makes even boring material interesting. One of the best English teachers around!
He's hilarious. Lectures are fun and interesting and if you read you will do just fine. The reading is interesting too so it's easy to do well in this class. We only had 3 tests and no HW, no essays. He's a great teacher, highly recommend you take him.
From day 1 I was terrified to continue this course but he really cares about his students and wants to help you to the best of his ability. Extremely hard grader, but he wants you to focus more on improving than the actual grade. As long as you work hard and seek his help you will be okay. Loved his class!
Had him for Eng 5-6. Fun guy, always made the class laugh in some way. Made me realize the "performance" aspect of being a teacher. By being entertaining, the class was that much more engaging. It was pretty laidback overall; just do the reading and you'll be fine. No essays, maybe a midterm. Had a couple take-home finals that were quite easy.
Prof. Driscoll is truly one of the most amazing teachers out there. Work hard in his class and you will be fine. He may seem not so forgiving in his grading, but your effort and willingness to improve and do better matters a lot! Take this class if you are willing to work hard and if you want to be a better writer.
I am an international student, so I had a really hard time when I was taking this class. Porfessor Driscoll is very helpful and generous, and his performance on class makes the class very enjoyable. Get ready to read and study. I can feel the improvements of my English, and I am taking his English 2 now.
If you are in the Scholars program and value education, this is your man. Make sure you take specifically his scholars class.
He is a funny teacher that explains things very well. He makes his lectures fun and entertaining but he is sarcastic. He will put you on the spot if you ask a dumb question or walk in class late.
I took so many of his classes! Eng 2 was amazing because he truly helped me become a better writer and prepare me for UCLA. I was all about that plot summary til I had him! He is funny, engaging, brilliant, and caring. I really can't say enough good things about him. Do the work, show effort, and you will get an A. BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!
Dr. Driscoll is literally the best around! He genuinely wants to see students improve their writing style and provides a lot of support and help during office hours. Lectures were super fun and engaging! He makes the grading criteria especially clear. Also, you must slave for the A, but put in time and show that you care and you'll get it.
Professor Driscoll is sarcastic and comes off a bit sneering at times. But if you show that you care and give effort he will be very understanding. If you do not read or study, you will not do well. The phrasing of the questions on his tests can also be somewhat confusing, so make sure that you study the literature in depth.
Professor Driscoll is hilarious! I was laughing so much in his class! The books you read are the typical literature classics, like the Odyssey, and even if you don't read everything, he gives handouts that ask for exactly what you should find in the books and know for the exams. Very clear. Awesome British accent ;-)
Driscoll amazing professor. Manner of teaching makes class content (that might seem dry) incredibly funny but still perfectly clear. Do the readings and try not to miss class. Uses lecture time well, either explaining the works line by line, or enlightening your life with tangential videos and internet headlines. Try a little, get a lot
You can tell Mr. Driscoll wants you to learn, he is very passionate and smart. You will have to work hard for your grade, cause it is a very hard class. However, you will learn valuable lessons in this class.
Professor Driscoll is an amazing guy. He will destroy your essay, however, will teach you how to write an amazing one. He is witty, teaches very well, gives good feedback, and will shape you into a better student. Highly recommend him. He was always there for me during office hours and always wanted to help. Love him.
Honestly Professor Driscoll is pretty funny and I have to say he is definitely the professor you want if you care about improving your writing. He's pretty funny and you should definitely come to his office hours if you need help with anything in his class. Just as long as you apply yourself you'll do fine just make sure not to stress out too much.
He is the best english professor on campus
He is the best professor I have met, caring, knowledgable and popular because he would interact with most of the students, which is helpful in any level. My writing got a lot better after taking his English1 and he made those tedious literature became interesting in English2 class! Even after I transfer I can't meet anyone like him.
He is the best English professor I have ever met. He is a really nice and caring person. He becomes your friend at the end of the semester. Besides, he is really knowledgable and professional guy. He makes Literature fun and interesting even though it seems confusing and hard. Deff Recom :)
Driscoll was an amazing instructor. Took him for English 5 in the fall, lots of reading but he made it very easy to remember. 3 exams, no essays, exams were formatted in a very funny and clever way so that if you did the reading it's a breeze. Great professor, probably the best one I've had at SMC so far :)
If you went to BHHS don't take him. This teacher gave three essays per semester and pop quizzes on the material used for the essay. You will fail every paper and he will spend the time in between each essay's due date telling you how bad you are at writing and how you will probably never be good at writing. Does not teach you just makes fun of you.
Driscoll is very caring, funny, and gives amazing lectures. He really tries to make students understand everything and he helps them in anyway he can, and it's obvious he enjoys doing it. I would definitely take a class with him again.
Hi guys!I took Driscoll STEM class and I'm another satisfied customer eheh.. He is a great professor, and I really enjoyed his class. He helped me a lot especially with his office hours. English is not my first language but I feel my writing improved thanks to him. I'm going to take english2 with him for sure. I recommend him without any doubt.
Driscoll really knows what he's doing. He'll make you laugh in every lecture AND get you to understand what you're reading. He has so much passion in what he does and is always there for his students. Every piece he selected for class was engaging and intriguing. Driscoll will give you a solid foundation for future English classes to come.
I love Driscoll's lectures but hate the fact that for upper level English he only does multiple choice exams. Us English majors need that essay practice. That being said, he's very caring, very easy to work with and very interesting. If only he gave essays!!
You should not only read the texts assigned but STUDY them, look up words you are not familiar with because he might quiz you in the next class. He is a tough grader. Make sure to ask him questions and ask for help, he might put you on the spot in class. He is a lot more approachable during office hours.
I would like to argue that the things he forces us to argue about is so abstract.
Dr. Driscoll has a wonderful mind and is incredibly knowledgable of his field. He translates difficult concepts into simple terms and has a great sense of humor that keeps you engaged. He always makes it a point to ask you what you thought of class that day, perfectly demonstrating how he genuinely wants you to succeed. HIGHLY recommend his class!
Driscoll was by far the best teacher I've taken as an English major. I have to say it's a relief that he's not like other teachers in the major that require essays but rather does quizzes but really helps you understand the material. He's so funny! Pay attention to lecture and visit his office if you need help for other classes. I love him!
His class is hard, but its bearable cuz he's an enthusiastic teacher that expects a lot from his students, although there is no homework you have to read and really know all the material (definition of every word, every line, all the material from the online analysis). It's a grind, but he's a good teacher
He gives practically everyone an A. He is less demanding than a high school teacher. Good luck in a real college literature course. Definitely puts the "community" in community college.
this class was really difficult. If you are not a critical thinkers this class will be hard. In previous classes I wouold usually get good grades on my papers but very difficult with his grading. For the essays he uses poems which have a deep meanings which are hard to catch and harder to write about. He was a good teacher but very difficult
He literally gives the exam to you. He is hilarious and his class is very amusing. I like the fact how there wasnt group work and that he would have everyone have something to say. However, get off your phone because he WILL call you out on it. NO ESSAYS!!
As a professor I did not care for him, he did not teach much other than instilling the belief of my writing not being right. I feel as though when it comes to writing everybody has a different style and he definitely expects each student to write in a robotic format, which in my personal opinion seems juvenile
He's the BEST. Great lecturer. I've taken 3 of his classes, and would take more. Just DO THE READING and you'll be fine - you're in good hands.
worst English professor at smc. Thinks he is funny but he really isn't and has favoritism towards certain students. It's either his way or his way. Horrible
Professor Driscoll made the boring readings funny and definitely engaged his students with his lectures. There is a lot of reading but that is to be expected in a literature course. No essays, only tests
One of the best Professors I have ever had. Very clear about what you need to study, wants you to do well. He is a super nice guy. You will get what you give-be engaged.
First few weeks I did not read the material thouroughly. But he made his expectations clear. Exams are easy if you read-DO NOT SKIM. Gave us a take home exam and gave us the essay prompts more than once. Timed essay practice helps ! Read the Magills, look up words you don't know, read the txtbk blurbs. Get to class on time and you're good to go!
Best English teacher at SMC,amazing lectures and easy to undersand, only three essays in whole semester
Driscoll is probably the best English professor at SMC, he's hilarious, his lectures are just pure gold, and overall he's a very welcoming person. I strongly suggest visiting him during his office hours because they are of great help especially when we're assigned essays. We get a lot of random vocal tests just a little fyi too
Best English professor for any major! Driscoll is super helpful in and out of class. He rewires your way of thinking and improves your writing skills immensely. He is super straightforward about his expectations. Easy A as long as you put in effort and do the readings. Learn to be criticized on the spot. Good luck!
Driscoll is a great professor, I have improved my writing MUCH. He works very different compared to other english teachers at SMC. he is a tough teacher, tough grader and the course is NOT EASY, tricky material for the essays but you will make it IF you are ready to work for your A. Dont get me wrong he is the sweetest, but he wants us to develop
Driscoll is THE best. He is enthusiastic and deeply cares for each student. He is available to help and really wants you to succeed. He can be a tough grader, but it's to push you to be the version of yourself. If you show him you care and are trying, you will do well. Read the Magill's, think critically, and show up to class! He's great.
Driscoll is really the best it gets at SMC. He is kind, caring, nurturing, and creates a safe space to learn. His lectures, for Shakespeare, were filled with funny anecdotes, cookies, and reassurance of the course material that made passing a breeze. He genuinely wants to see everyone succeed, and will help you get there no matter what.
Amazing individual who wants to see you succeed, fun lectures but very strict with what he wants from you, not an easy A but def managable. Learned a lot.
Professor Driscoll is FUNNY, gives amazing lectures & is very caring. But he gives a lot of essays throughout the whole semester. They are very hard, but he gives good feedback. I struggled because I suck at writing, but he helped me so much when I would ask for help. Just be prepared to write A LOT.
I personally adore Prof Driscoll , after taking him for Eng 3 I signed up for him for his Eng 5, 6 and 15! His lectures are hilarious, he has a great sense of humor and even though he can be harsh sometimes (to the students who arent paying attention) he only does it out of care. He is one of my favorite professors and he's a fantastic teacher.
Driscoll is a very interesting professor - he cold calls people and gets upset when they don't know the answer. He either really likes you or doesn't (you get called on more if he doesn't). His tests are difficult but he bends your grade if you don't miss class. He is funny but politics are brought up a lot with no context.
Although Driscoll may seem to exude the qualities of a great prof, his methodology in teaching is poor. Openly demeaning well-intentioned students struggling with his vague writing criteria & calling them stupid in front of the entire class is surely not the makings of a good professor; This isn't constructive criticism. Regret taking his class.
This class made me cry all the way through the semester I would work harder than I have worked in my entire life for nothing He will call you out in front of the whole class to make you feel stupid. He thinks he is the smartest man in the world and his textbook doesn't teach anything at all His instructions are vague but he wants something specific
Probably the most productive teacher I've had. The class is demanding, and your grade is determined by three tests and three essays, so there's not a lot of wiggle room, but he's very engaging and clearly loves his job. Personable and good sense of humor. Pay attention in class and you will pass with flying colors, he covers everything.
half the class is him talking about how he graduated usc lol
Dr. D is the best teacher Ive ever had. I took his English 1 coming directly from high school and was very nervous, but he helped bring out my academic confidence and encouraged me to always stay passionate. I have never learned more in a single class than his. Great lecturer, hilarious, energetic, and if you put in the work, hell love you too!
Dr. D is the most inspiring and energetic prof I ever had. He is deeply committed to teaching and his students. The only caveat is he expects his students to bring it, as much as he does! He is not easy! I'm an English major that can easily breeze through most classes unchallenged, except for 6, and 15. You need to be up for working it!
Came into this year expecting a freshman level english class but instead felt like I was taking an Ivy League level class. Most insensitive, degrading person as a whole who doesnt care that youre a human being with feelings. Spent the whole semester crying and was terrified to ask for help because of his lack of sympathy. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr.D is very thorough in his lectures. To pass you have to dedicate time to do the reading and rewatch the videos and lectures a fair amount of times. the lectures show the path he wants you to take and the reading gives the details. the more you participate the more he will specify what he is looking for. In my experience he levels w/ his students
Driscoll is an amazing Professor so much that I took him for both English 1 and 2. He is very caring and it matters to him if you are learning or not. He likes when you participated and he tries to engage everyone in class even though it's through zoom.
I love this professor. Definitely not an easy A but he really cares for his students. It's a lot of reading. He is pretty straight forward, just do what he expects you to do and you will be just fine.
Amazing profesor! If you work for it an A is basically guaranteed. Super helpful regarding feedback and wants to see you do well.
He's really funny, he makes it extremely obvious what needs to be mentioned on the tests. He is SO helpful; answers all of our questions and, again, gives us all the information in full detail. This course has been challenging and being prepared before every lecture is important, but I think this is the best ENG2 class at SMC.
Professor Driscoll is an awesome professor. Hes funny and consistently shows that he really cares about his students and their success. Plus, hes got this charisma that pulls you into whatever hes talking about. English literature taught in a comfortable setting and peppered heavily with comedy and 1980s music references. Highly recommend!
Professor Driscoll didn't lecture much and we watched some fun videos. He really is a funny guy and an enjoyable person but as a teacher he's super tough. Very very tough grader and a lot of stuff was done in class and if you miss class you won't get credit for the assignment or get to make it up. However he knows his stuff and will make you better
Actually the best English professor. He gives long lectures but they are interesting and engaging. Just read the assignments, pay attention during lectures, and you're fine. Funniest guy; uses British humor so don't get offended if he makes fun of you lol
The finest English professor I have taken a course with, Dr. Driscoll is a master at his craft. His lectures are focused and interesting, and he is especially conscious of his distribution of material. Making sure never to overwhelm his students with too much information. This teacher is very funny and empathetic... English majors take this guy!!
Insufferable. If you do not make it to class, you will fail his class 100%. Annoying and unbearable at best.
Professor Driscoll is the most amazing prof I have had at SMC. I took him for ENG5 and am currently taking him for ENG6. He makes reading difficult literature fun and comprehensible and is incredibly dedicated to his students. The exams are long but if you pay attention they are not difficult. As an English Major, he makes me proud. 10/10.
He is the homie, a true SMC icon! I cannot recommend this course enough. I'm keeping this review short because RMP has a wordcount, but if I could I would write a full paper on how awesome Driscoll is. He is literally a legend.
Driscroll was an amazing Professor at SMC. I took him for both ENGL 15 and ENGL 6. He made the classes so interesting and he was super funny. He does call you out but guys it's all in good fun. I transferred to Berkeley this year and just wish I could take him for another class up here!!
I had English 1 in person with Professor Driscoll. Loved his lectures, he was very helpful and I always enjoyed his class.
I loved this class. I've taken two classes with him and I always had the best time. I was able to learn so much from the class and take away new perspectives from the readings. In terms of homework, it's just reading. If you do not do the readings, you will have a hard time in class. If I could take this professor again, I most definitely would.
Love this guy so much. Had him for Eng2 on ground and he always had entertaining lectures. He is not an "easy A" if you're a bad student, but if you just put in the work this is really not a hard class at all. He's funny, caring, and is able to make his students really understand what we're learning. Highly recommend.
Honestly I only got an A because he liked our class. Most of the time he just gave us 30/30 on exams BUT if you talk back and tried to act like you know better than him he will not hesitate to embarrass you in front of everyone. He even made someone cry in class because he picked on them so frequently. His teaching style is very different too.
Doesn't seem like a good class for actually learning how to write. Unless you meet his very specific and pointless requirements on every assignment you'll be graded down and probably reprimanded in class. Don't expect to actually learn anything you'll carry with you in life. Wastes a lot of class time trying to be charismatic and making bad jokes
This class requires work but will overall reach you how to read. Genuinely nice guy and is always willing to be there for his students. Not much for error on tests though.
He is a really caring and understanding professor and if you care and ask for help, he will definitely help you. Don't forget to go see him in his office hours if you are struggling.
Very hard class to much work and gives advanced assignments.
Dr Driscoll cares about his students, generous with his time and very encouraging.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Prof. Driscoll is not one you want to take if you are unwilling to put in the work, his essays involve a lot of critical thinking and creativity but he will help if you approach him with an honest attempt. He will assign in class assignments that you can not make up so don't miss class. You can learn a lot about writing a college essay in his class
Class has a big emphasis on college writing, it won't be easy, but you'll learn a lot and he'll work with you if you put in a genuine effort. Interesting lectures, he does try to be funny often and may come to mean but he's not. Attendance is also crucial.
Professor Driscoll heightened my interest in literature. He is a great professor and makes his lectures very funny and interesting as well as informative. He accommodates his students very well and was always so caring to my fellow students and I. I highly recommend his British Literature classes. I learned so much in a very small amount of time!!
Professor Driscoll IS AMAZING. I had the time of my life in his lectures. He always cracks up jokes about students (so don't get easily offended) and the material itself. He is very lenient with grading, but I recommend taking shorter semesters for his class. However, self-learning is very useful to succeed in his class. Highly Recommended.
I love Dr.Driscoll. Take his class. Not only did he prepare me for all of the future classes I would and will be taking, but I truly gained so much knowledge from Dr.Driscoll and his class. HIs class was always a joy and he is funny and his class is a fun environment to be in.
Do the work listen in class, you will do just fine, get an A, and you mostly you'll love the class trust me. I walked away with skills in and outside of the classroom. He wants his students to succeed, truly. He helped strengthen my skills as a student that set the foundation for all my future classes. Take his class, so much fun you learn a lot!
TAKE HIS CLASS, TRUST!! I took English 1 and English 2 with Dr. Driscoll and his classes are so fun and so engaging. I learned a lot and highly recommend Dr.Driscoll's classes. Also very interesting topics in class.
Dr. D is amazing!! Clearly erudite and extremely knowledgable, he will teach you so much in just one class. He is so funny and kind as well, and his lectures are never boring. If you are a good and studious student and if you engage well, he will become your favorite teacher!
This course requires a lot more reading and writing than usual and therefore is no good if your a stem focused major because it'll take most of your time. It'll be worse if you're a foreign student, I think even if you have a strong back ground in English. Save yourself the unnecessary stress and don't take him. Furthermore, he uses profanity.
Trust me, take Dr. Driscoll's class. It's so engaging and fun, you'll learn a ton. I used unstuckstudy ai to help with the coursework, and it was a game-changer. Highly recommend his class!
If ur worried about the difficulty level; pls know that he's one of the most caring professors on campus. He WILL help u, esp if ur a non trad student. The materials do require a higher level of thinking/creativity, but his teaching style makes u passionate about it. The course isn't for u if ur not inclined to the humanities/are more STEM focused.
I ended up switching to a different course as it was obvious that I was not his target audience for success. This class more resembles a British literature course, so be aware of that—great professor for some, just not for me. Your whole grade is based on 6 in class and written on PAPER essays. He is funny though so lectures were enjoyable.
If you participate and show enthusiasm in his class. He will really try his best to get you to finish with an A. Eng 2 is a lot more challenging than Eng 1. There is a lot more reading it the exams are extremely easy. He basically gives you the answer in the question. The only challenge for me in this class was showing up at 8am on a Friday.
BY FAR THE BEST PROFESSOR AT SMC. Ive taken his eng1,2, and 5. and i PLAN to take his Eng6. He is so dedicated and actually changed my life. Like anything, be an adult and communicate your needs and he will accommodate to the best of his ability if you show up to class and are interested in the material. His english 1 is especially good. TAKE HIM!!
Interesting class
He's amazing! If you're someone who's an interactive learner, he's the teacher for you. There's a lot of reading for this class, but it's super doable. He's so sweet and understanding as well and he gives great essay feedback! Just pay attention and actually do the reading and you'll do just fine. If you're ever stuck, he's there for you.
Best professor I've ever had hands down. Workload is heavy, but he brings you into the material. Lectures are fantastic. He is so genuine and kind. Tests are hard but he helps you prepare during office hours if you go. He is so funny and knowledgeable. If you love literature and you're looking to learn a LOT, take this class.
I took him during summer (6 week semester) which made the workload very easy. You don't have to pay for books he gives you handouts and what you need to know by paper. He is very caring and understanding to students who take English 2 and he wants people to pass and succeed. Very inspirational, funny, and immersive lectures. He also had pop quizzes
Ignore all the bad comments, Driscoll is THE best professor. He wants his essays written in his particular way but don't let this scare you, just listen to him, go to office hours, and PARTICIPATE! He wants you to pass as much as you do, he might pick on you but it's all out of love. I dont even like English but passed w an A as an international :)
There is a book, poems, and portions of theater scripts to read and analyze. He will explain in class/email/announcement's exactly what is expected to do well on assignments and exams. He is extremely reasonable and understanding if you feel that you're not doing well then talk to him he will work with you to get you where you need to be.
His assignments consisted of writing essays on British** films and poems, and he gave you a structure of the essay you had to follow, so if you are someone who likes to write in your own style, reconsider... If I had to, honestly would have took another professor. Didnt get feedback on essays.
His confidence, dry humor, passion for literature, and interactions with the class always made learning fun and appealing. His summer class consisted of 6 weekly unit exams. As long as you don't skip class, print out the poems in the library to annotate, read the analysis in the free online textbook twice or thrice, you'll do well and have fun too.
Best prof at SMC
Not very helpfulfeedback, at least through online communications. Comes off as very rude, if you're sensitive to that kind of thing. If you're not, I'm sure you'll find him tolerable. His style of criticism seems a lot more discouraging than constructive, with it focused largely on pointing out flaws without offering clear guidance on improvement.
I absolutely loved this class. You read the textbook, and he provides study guides that are essentially the exam itself. The exams are the only assignments that will be included in the grade book, so please do your best to perform well on them. You have three portions to an exam: MCQ, FRQ, and translation. He's British too, so that's a plus! Enjoy!
