He is the best teacher I have ever had
Great instructor, tests are difficult so studying and paying attention is key
Makes me wish I were a history major! I want to take another class with him!
Very difficult exams, extensive essays required
Difficult as hell, but funny.Makes you feel good when you do well though.
Very good teacher, but don't take the class if you are expecting an easy A.
Very Hard teacher, but nice out of class, if you want to work alot, take hist245
EXTREMELY hard teacher. Extensive material leads to tough essays.
Hard hard hard, but approachable. he just wants students to work for their grade
Very unpleasent and disagreeable
Nice if you are honors, mean if you are not. nasty personality.
Exams require very indepth essays, extraordinary teacher
Extremely arrogant, very unhelpful, pompous and full of himself
duggan is a terrible proffesor who is repetitive and monotone
I think he is great! Learned alot. Very interesting lectures.
Well unless your like him...then he treats you like crap.
arrogant, pompous, know-it-all, unfair grading...plays favorites
Made me want to change my mjr from hist to anything else.
He's arrogant, but easy to get used to his style of teaching.
TAKE HONORS!! Otherwise you're "just a face." But he is very cool otherwise.

My favorite professor of all time. You will want to work to earn his respect.
From a different era...Kinda Dead Poet Society
very arrogant, know the study guide or fail, good luck on exams
just a jerk. he's not helpful. however, he does know his stuff
Very Helpful if you go to him. My favoorite history teacher, he knows his stuff
easy if you study and go to class. awesome lectures.
Prof is an acquired taste. Big lectures are never fun.
Incredibly Intensive, only take him if you want to be punished with history.
He's intimidating, but he's a good prof. Would take another course with him
Great lecturer.don't ask for a recommendation though, his sarcasm carries over.
Hard Professor, but he really does want you to share in his knowledge
He is arrogant and undeserving of his position as a professor. He took a subject I liked and turned it into torture.
He just made me hate history even more than i already did! Very arrogant and sarcastic. I really hate history!!

Funny old guy, a lot of overhead notes, but he knows his stuff*have to go to class and study a lot though only three exams and no papers
people complain about him, but really...the guy TELLS you what to study. yeah he gives a lot of notes, but all you have to do is study the fill-ins in the study guide book and listen for hints about the essay. he even allows extra credit on the exams.
Interesting lecturer and very intelligent. Tells you exactly what and how to study. Exams taken directly from study guide and notes. Go to class and pay attention and you'll get an A.
Horrible, do not take him. Review sessions are not helpful, grading system is impossible, and the tests are out of this world.

A bit arrogant, but funny. Getting an A requires a lot of effort. Interesting class.
great professor...tough course, but clear about what you need to know for the tests
He has a huge ego, but its all for show. Very funny and entertaining. Will intimidate you in the beginning but don't be fooled. Awesome guy. Class is all encompassing and expect three exams to be the same. Essays can be tough. Go duggan!
Hard class if you dont write the essay HIS way. Go to the reviews and see what he is looking for then it's an easy A.
Any one who says this guys sucks is a slacker. If you pay attention to what he says you will have no problem... read at least half of the homework before class and you can pass.
He feels as though he should be dipped in gold because he went to Haaaarvard. His picture should be next to word 'pompous' in the dictionary! Avoid him if you want to avoid being crushed to death by his big head.

good teacher, grades tough.pompous is to say the least.don't be too afraid to take this class.read! and listen to everything he says
Definately cocky, but knows everything there is to know about Renaissance Europe. Go to class, read the text and study exactly what he tells you and you should have no problem.
Great prof. Just read the assigned text and listen to everything he says. His commentaries will make it all worth it.
I was crushed from his swelling ego! Humilty is a great virtue, and obviously no one let him in on that!
Very confident in his own intelligence. Tests are odd, and he wants to be reincarnated as a river otter?!?! He devoted and entire class to it. Talks about the **** greeks, and doesn't always get all the material into the class. Bad overheads. Oh w
Not the easiest class ever, but go to his office hours! It shows you care about your grade, and he'll take that into account. He gave me a A- after getting a D+ on the second test, but I was at his office twice a week!
As long as you stay on top of things, you'll do fine with him. Don't let his speech on the first day intimidate you, he is actually quite nice and funny.
I love going to his lectures. He's really fun to listen to and even I don't fall asleep in his class....that's sayin something. Be sure to suck up, he likes that. Only three tests throughout the semester and if you mess up on one you're like....screwed
Dont let hims scare you. He acts very pompous, but he's actually very nice and easy to approach. Go to class and read the book and you'll do fine.
unhelpful, and doesnt like it when your opinions are different from his own, if you work hard and read text not given in class, you will do well
Do not be fooled by the fact that this class is 100 level; he is an incredibly boring lecturer. Read the entire book and do the entire study guide or you will never survive.
Honestly he seems to really hate women in his class especially if he has different views from you. Will make a point to embarrass you in front of class just because it makes him feel better about himself. His tests are difficult and he doesn't help.
This man is one of those uppity high level professors who feels insulted that they are making him teach a 101 class. Therefore, he decides to make it as dificult as possible, and be as big of an ass as he can. Do not take!!!!!
Most of these comments are from low level classes. This man is a good teacher, and you will learn. That said, I absoultely loathe the man as he is arrogant, vindictive, and caustic. I have taken 3 upper level classes, quite difficult indeed (I had to).
I haven't had him for a lecture class, but I would highly recommend him for the seminar. You WILL learn how to write a good paper, but he usually makes it pretty fun. He tries to seem scary but it's just an act he is very helpful and approachable.
I really enjoed this class. The test was pretty straight forawrd. he seems like a pompous guy, but take the chance... he is really nice and makes you laugh!
Aw, I love this man! He seems tough at first, but he genuinely cares aboutu his students. You can learn a lot from him - he knows absolutely everything about Reformation Europe. His tests can be difficult, but he is worth taking - comes highly recommended.
intersting class, kinda hard exams. You must attend class. Exams come straight from outlines. Class at first seems impossible, but as long as you put the work in, you will do well. Get to know him and sit in the front, he curves based on if he knows you and if you attend class!
He's a good professor, makes topics interesting and draws his tests from the text and class notes. The tests seems hard, but if you study your notes, the tests are pretty easy, although they are long. Take his class, seems intimidating but isn't.

He's a good guy, really smart. and that is sometimes the problem, he knows he's smart and can sometimes be a bit of a jackass. GO TO CLASS! His test are rather hard. Study!
Very good lecturer. Always very helpful. If you attend class and take notes, you will do just fine. One of the best history professors I have ever had.

This guy was the absolute worst professor I had at UD.
Dr. Duggan is so interesting and a wonderful person! The class is challenging, but in a good way. You will learn so much if you take one of his classes. I still talk to him sometimes even though I don't have any more classes with him because he is just a nice guy.
Very interesting material! Lots of extra credit! Easy midterm and final! One of the smartest teachers I've ever had
Great professor, knows ****ing everything. Class is sometimes boring but his lectures are pretty good, uses an overhead projector for note outlines which is helpful. USE THE CD THAT CAME WITH THE BOOK, ON THERE ARE IN DEPTH CHAPTER SUMMARIES AND LOTS OF HELPFUL THINGS. I read only the chapter summaries and the assigned book and got an A in the clas
Maybe its cause I'm a HistEd major, but I thought it was easy. He does give an extensive amount of notes, but if you take them religiously and read the book, you'll do fine. There's a matching or fill in the blank section of his tests that comes from the study guide, so if you read that, you get easy points. Overall, not a rough class at all.
DO NOT TAKE THE SEMINAR WITH THIS MAN....HE IS VERY STRANGE AND VERY ARROGANT. DO NOT TAKE THE SEMINAR WITH THIS MAN. DO NOT TAKE THE SEMINAR WITH THIS MAN
Good prof, interesting lectures, typical history tests. It's definitely an interesting course and not terribly hard to get an A in. He's also entertaining, and would be a lot funnier to me if there wasn't a freaking annoying girl in the back laughing rediculously and "ratting everyone out". God she should be shot.
switched into this class during the first week. i was very interested in the subject. absolute mistake. never knew what was going on. makes me hate everything about the renaissance. very arrogant and pompous. do not take this class
Hard ass class...the guy knows his**** though. you definately need to pay attention if you want to get an "A." He can kind of be an **** sometimes with his rude comments but its funny as long as its not you hes making fun of. tests are essay and matching
Good teacher, Grade is made up of 3-5 quizes on readings, two exams, and a paper. Participation does count. If you put in the time, it will show.
Took him for Reformation Europe. He's very smart and his lectures are interesting. He can be funny if you don't take his rudeness seriously. But as a Christian, I was a little offended by some of his opinions he threw into the lectures about protestant Christianity and Paul and others. Not worth taking if you're not up for your beliefs being bashed.
Survery class w/ lots of material to cover, Duggan is awesome, for lectures go to class/office hours, make sure he knows your name. Show him you care and he'll help you with anything. Tests: id's and an essay (topic given before hand) Go to class, its interesting. Don't take thinking it's an easy 100 level history class
DO NOT TAKE CLASS WITH THIS MAN! He is extremely condescending and his tests are so unbelieveably hard. You will not get a decent grade on the exam essays unless you know every single miniscule detail about the topic. Very difficult class for a 100 level. Avoid at all costs.
DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT LAST IDIOT! Best professor ever. Very funny, and probably the most eloquent teacher I've had so far. Definitely my favorite class this semester, and, compared to most history/polisci classes, pretty light reading. Take it, you won't regret it.
Worst Professor Ive ever had. He tries to play like he is unbiased but is the exact opposite, has lousy jokes and teaches and tests in the dumbest way. His tests are just out right annoying to study for and take. Find another teacher don't take him.
Extremely tough for a HIST 101 class. If you decide to take this class, prepare for 300-400 level work. Funny and friendly guy, but a large amount of work. I took a tough pre-law course in the 400 level and thought this HIST 101 was almost just as difficult.
Straight up Duggan is a tool. Do not take this class with him under any circumstances, harder than all of the 400 level classes ive taken just cuz of him. Duggan = Tool
Duggan is an interesting guy. The class can be a bit dry, but he has a good sense of humor. Class is not easy but if you read and go to class it helps big time. This class changed the way I think about European History and the Catholic Church.
Best Professor ever. Definitely one of the best at Delaware. Its what you expect of a professor: genius, Harvard PhD, eloquent, and nice if you show him you care. Went to every class and wrote down everything he wrote because it was fascinating and got an A for the effort. Definitely a great teacher and a wiz at croquet.
This class is hard work, but its fairly interesting. The only problem I had was with the final. He gave us a study guide that was nothing like the actual exam. Doing well on the quizzes really boosts your grade.

I took this class failed it with a D and had to retake it. In class he is entertaining. His tests are rough BUT when he talks about "final judgement" in class he means it will be on the exam so know your stuff. The exam is essay and short ID(who what where when why) for the first exam, essay and short id (one word) for the second, the final exam
I would not recommend this class if you want an easy A. He is very particular about everything. Sometimes I feel like he is teaching philosophy rather than History. In our first essay, we had to explain how the Greeks did not say, or invent it all. I would rather just learn events not the small details I will forget. Intelligent Professor though.
Good professor! Very smart and funny but not an easy class. Good for history major looking for a challenging class that will teach them a lot about early civilizations. Do not take this professor if you are looking for a cake class and easy grade. Mush work hard for good grade and attend all classes.
Great professor...hard class, this one was a challenge so only go for it if you think you've got what it takes
He reminds me of the stereotypical professor. He has been teaching for like 20 years. His class is not too hard but you have to take good notes and read them over. Skim over the book at your own pace. Since there is no homework it was hard to judge how well I was doing in the class or if I understood the material until test time.
An extremely intelligent man with a very dry sense of humor. I learned a lot in this class, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Make sure you do a decent job of doing the reading, because he gives occasional pop quizzes on them. However, overall, he isn't an extremely tough grader, and there are opportunities for extra credit on quizzes and exams.
Interesting class but difficult tests. It's almost impossible to know what exactly he's going to ask until test time. If you study and work hard you'll pass.
Very challenging class. I'm a history major and I felt lost half the time. Trivial details we were expected to know made the class very confusing.
Duggan genuinely wants to help you learn, and you will in this class! Take good notes, study them well, and look over the objective questions in the study guide and you will get an A. If you miss something in the lecture, go to his office hours, he is very helpful.
Great with lectures, I enjoyed the class. Hope you enjoy a dry sense of humor. Study the lecture outlines thoroughly, he will pull questions from anywhere. Grades tough on the essays. Gives the prompt for the essay on the final in the syllabus, which made the final easier than every other test.
Not a good professor. Spends most of the class discussing things that interest him (theology) and will not be on the exam. Tough grader, and expects you to know the smallest details of the chapter. Be prepared to read the ENTIRE book, and still not get an A. Most people usually got Cs or Ds on the tests, so don't take it as a group requirement.
He gives interesting lectures but they are often irrelevant to what is actually on the test. You are going to have to do a lot of reading. He is also a pretty harsh grader.
I think Duggan is a great teacher. He was very helpful and fair. If you didn't come to class, listen, or read, you'd fail. He gives the questions ahead of time and even hints at what will be on the tests. He has a very dry sense of humor, almost insulting at times, but he's a good guy. I can't wait to have him as a professor again.
Horrible horrible horrible teacher! His lectures drag on, his "humor" is annoying and offensive, and his tests are impossible.
Western Civ..he knows his stuff, but he is an Arrogant, Pompous ass. He gets into pissing contests with students who question him. And rememebr to turn off your cell phone or he'll take a hammer to it...NOT JOKING! (He calls it the Malleus Cellphonerus)
Extremely intelligent, helpful, and all around great guy! I was failing in the beginning but made good use of office hours. If you know how to study for his exams you're golden. Make good use of the study guide, this is where A LOT of the short answers come from and start preparing essay q's ASAP. Ended the class with a B and learned a ton.
Because Prof. Duggan is so intelligent, his presence naturally makes you feel dumb and worthless. He is cool & funny in the classroom, yet try to speak to him outside of class and its like pulling teeth. I thought I loved history before I took his class - he makes you realize how unfit you are for it. HOWEVER, he can be helpful if he likes you.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS YOU WILL REGRET IT. I am a History Major who has never received a grade below a B+ in a history class and I did terribly in this class.
Very helpful during office hours and possessive of an encyclopedic knowledge of history. Everybody who complains about him only does so because he or she didn't feel like putting in the effort and doing all the reading (which is substantial). Sometimes wears a kilt. In class, it helps to envision him with sunglasses, a long beard, and a guitar.
He is a very intelligent teacher but he gives a lot papers and he grades heavily on grammar. DO NOT put sentence fragments or run on's in your paper or you will get an F. He takes into account if you have gone the writing center. He is helpful if you ask for it. If you go to class and are engaged in the discussion you should do well.
His lectures are hard to keep up with and very unclear. He skips around and it's easy to get lost. The tests are impossible. Studided for a week and a half and only got a D-, don't use the textbook at all, everything on the exams comes from the lecture notes. You have to know every little detail from the outlines, so study hard and hope to pass.
I had him for Reformation Europe, HIST345. If the class doesn't boring on its own, he just read off of projector slides, NOTHING else. We had 3 quizzes on books we read, and even if you look at the study guide, it doesn't help; he puts the most useless questions on his tests. Whatever you do, DON'T take him!
I thought the class was fairly easy but I took Ancient Religions and Civilizations prior to this one. He has a very theatrical style and each lecture is like a show he's putting on. Goes off course a lot and I think it actually makes the class better as the material is fairly boring. I've not needed help, but he seems approachable and helpful.
For a 101 class, taking anything but this class. Extremely hard to keep up with his discussions, and his exams are based solely off of what he says in class.
Graded like a 300 level course. Exams are based largely off of what he discusses in class, so it is important to attend class regularly. However, if he knows you are making an effort and you go to office hours, you're not likely to fail.
Horrible. Avoid this class if you do not need to take it. There are only 3 exams and one quiz. The exams are half essays and half impossible objective questions. He doesn't take attendance, but definitely go to class because the exams are based largely on the lectures. Incredibly boring. Unhelpful and arrogant. He also wears skirts.
I took HIST 101 (which covers alot of material) with him and it was horrible. I would say avoid taking this class, with him especially. Three exams, one quiz. He goes off topic A LOT. He's absolutely no help if you go to office hours, and his exam objective question aren't reasonable. Save yourself the stress take another history class.
I have him for two history classes and we have yet to actually cover anything related to either topics. He is pompous to the point where he wants you to write exactly like him or he gives you an F on a paper. Also his instructions for papers are unclear because the first one we had to do for Hist 268 half the class wrote the wrong one.
Please do not judge Duggan so harshly due to the first two papers of this section. Honestly this class was one of the hardest I've ever taken but he truly does care about you as students. The one thing he and the history department do not like are those who don't try to improve or give up. Give it your all and GO TO OFFICE HOURS WITH ANY QUESTIONS!
Duggan is a fantastic professor if you actually put effort into learning instead of expecting to be spoon-fed. He does sometimes go off topic, but he knows his stuff. I wouldn't even consider the low "easiness" rating a bad thing, he demands effort and putting in work is what you're supposed to be doing anyway.
Worst professor I had during entire UD experience.
He's a Harvard grad who's been teaching at UD for maybe 40 years.... Very pretentious and knows everything, and absolutely everything. WILL take up the whole class period, and go over. Make sure to read whatever is assigned.
I had to take this class Freshman year as my Honors Colloquium course. I felt like it was impossible to do well in... I got a C+ on 3 out of the 4 short papers we had to write. Somehow, got a B+ on the 4th and pulled a B- in the class after the research paper. I'm a Pre-vet major and this class was my lowest grade last semester...
Dr. Duggan has encyclopedic knowledge of European history. You're going to do a lot of reading in the class, but his wit and ranting makes the readings very much worth taking the class.
Lawrence Duggan is possibly the best professor at UD. I don't even agree with his political views, but he is so witty and personable that anyone would enjoy his class and respect him as a professor. He is exceptionally intelligent especially in his specialty area of European history, and his lectures are enjoyable and informative.
Inspires the student to think for themselves, research, and make use of the tools we have at hand. Improved my level of effort in my work significantly.
This man is a mess. He randomly screams about whatever he wants, uses derogatory language quite often, claims to be possessed by the holy spirit, denies basic facts, is incredibly condescending, among other various wrongdoings. I hated this class specifically because of how awful he is.
I actually really enjoyed HIST170 with Professor Duggan. Yes, he's opinionated and yes, he's odd, but I really enjoyed the discussions we had in class and the different material we covered. He's funny, a little kooky, and he obviously really enjoys the subject matter. Just be prepared to write a few papers.
A great guy, really loud and kind of obnoxious. He cares about things a little TOO much and grades way too literally. Don't even waste your time with this guy.
Do not take this class. Throughout the semester the only thing I have learned was about his family disease history. He babbles, goes off on tangents and yells randomly. He also isn't on Canvas and has no grading scale. This class was a huge waste of my money.
All he does is ramble and yell at the class. Very weird guy, lectures aren't even on the class content. Don't take this class.
Entertaining "Plagues & Peoples" class. Two quizzes, two short papers. Yes, Prof. Duggan, an old Harvard guy, does ramble off topic, but listening to a kooky professor jabbering away just seems like a good part of college life to me. No Canvas site, no grading rubric, so if you need "high school" structure for your classes, maybe stay away.
Boring. Forces participation during lecture instead of teaching the class.
Frustrating class to say the least. Can't speak for how it's taught in person but online it's an absolute drag. Duggan rambles in his lectures and is unengaging to listen to. The tests and essays are graded to such a high standard that is near impossible to please because you are never given any type of rubric. Super pretentious class don't take it
There are not enough characters available to go into every detail about why you should not take any of his classes. Long, boring monologues unrelated to course material. Never answers questions, just talks about vaguely related subjects to the question. Has too often ask the class how he ended up wherever he is. So many more reasons to avoid him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is the worst class I have taken in college by far, avoid at all costs! After taking this class, I too, would like to go to Jerusalem and have someone stab me. IT would honestly be less painful than sitting through his repeat lectures and long, boring tangents.
He is not helpful if you go to him for help. In fact his sarcastic responses are quite honestly rude. He talks about himself all class every class. He acts like he enjoys talking down and demeaningly towards his students. There is barely any structure or rubric guidelines. The content is also depressing
I took the Honors section of this class. The extra "work" required is meeting with him once every two weeks and two additional papers (that never got graded or even read). Overall, he is nearly impossible to reach outside of class, rambles the entire class away, and relies entirely on the TA for grading purposes. Avoid this professor at all costs
Honestly, a pretty interesting guy. He always gives feedback but can be a little rude when you ask questions. Definitely a lot of work outside of class and getting an A is almost impossible. Getting a B is very easy if you do the work.
Do NOT take this class if you don't have to. He tells the same stories every class and doesn't actually end up teaching. You have to memorize chapters from the textbook as homework for tests/quizzes but if he doesn't agree with something in the text then it is marked wrong. He is also rude when questions are asked in class and answers it in riddles
Prof Duggan is extremely intelligent and passionate about the subject. However, the textbook sucks and he knows it, he rambles nonstop, & the test guidelines make no sense. I was considering taking another class w him but decided not to. No actual hw except the reading, but the reading is super dense. Spent countless hours studying for this class.
Literally just rambles during class the whole time about his family history. Do not take this course unless you'r good at readying 300 pages from a text book and taking exams. Would not recommend this class to anyone.
Worst professor I have had at UD. I took two of his history classes at the same time and it was terrible. Very old lecture papers that only make sense to him. He constantly goes on tangents and does not cover material. Never take a class with him
AVOID!! Old school professor with nothing to lose. Lectures and assigned texts are pointless. Exams are very difficult with long essay responses. Professors like this need to retire-completely unrelatable, babbles endlessly about topics unrelated to course. Course was a waste of money and learned nothing
