wonderful professor,if you do the homework and attend lecture you will be fine.Dr. L fong is always available to answer any questions. Helpful if you have some chem background, he is very detailed.
Great Teacher! Prepared me very well for the chemistry that is demanded in Universities.
Dr. Fong is a great instructor. always very helpful in answering questions. very good lectures, easy to understand if you are paying attention! very organized which is real important. wish i had him for my chem 32 lab.
Dr. L. Fong is a wonderful teacher. He is straight forward and very clear in his lectures. You will benefit a lot from his class if you pay attention. He's always willing to help. No doubt one of the best professors out there.
I've had Dr. L. Fong as a lab instructor for 2 semesters. AWESOME professor. Pre-lab lectures are very helpful in understanding the exp. Very clear in explaining concepts and always willing to help. Quizzes and grading is fair, but not easy. Has a great sense of humor. He is a teacher who will make you miss chemistry after you finish the class.
Dr. Fong won't spend time on things you're not going to be responsible for. He has a Buddha-like patience with you, should you meet with him 1-on-1. Show respect by waiting your turn if you're in a group surrounding him. The man is inspirational, compassionate, personable and has a good sense of humor. He is one of the finest teachers around.
I've had Dr. L. Fong as a lab instructor for both A and B. AWESOME professor. Pre-lab lectures are indepth, and quick. Very clear in explaining concepts and always willing to help. Quizzes and grading are quick, fair, and challeging. DONT BE LATE
It's hard to hear from the back row in lecture. Sometimes he would speak loud and clear then his voice shift to low. If you don't understand the book then you definitely would not understand his lecture as well. Make a point in asking the teacher to simplify and you get pretty much nothing. So all I can say is understand the book and good luck.

All I can say is Dr. Fong is the best Chemistry professor anyone could ever have. He's patient, knowledgable, and sets up every student to succeed. I used to visit him in his office twice a week with questions. He was always there to help and support. Any Chem course is hard. However, Dr. Fong makes chemistry a lot fun to learn. Take his class!
Dr. Fong is clear, organized, and personable. He expects you to do the work, but is always there for you if you have queries. Turnaround on tests/quizzes/homework is mercifully quick. If you are a good student, this is the kind of teacher you look for; if you're lazy ("The dude made me do my homework!"), take it - it'll be good for you!
I like Dr. Fong, he is the best teacher in the chem department. However, the class itself is very difficult bc we cover a lot og material. I think if you want to learn chemistry he will help you to do so.
Overall he means well and he is definitely good at what he does (chemistry),but he has an attitude when it comes to helping students 75% of the time. He's a tough grader. He marked me 9 points off a 15 pt. question on my midterm, not because I got the answer wrong but because I gave him more information than he asked for. If u take him, Good luck
the worst teacher I ever had. he gets mad at you if you ask him a question, he limits the time for test wich makes it harder and he loves taking points. I'm a good student but this teacher really shoudln't be teaching. If you want to feel stress all semester and do bad!!! take his class
Dr Fong is very knowledgable and he expects alot from his students. He has marathon tests in which wrong ansers count against correct ones. He can get upset if you are unprepared or not following instructions in lab but is generally a funny guy. Start studying before class even begins because the amount of material is tremendous.
Dr. Fong was my first chemistry professor. He is great. You will learn a lot from him IF you pay attention in class and lab. Also study for exams. You should study harder than what you do in class because his exams are not even essay. 1 hour is not enough for you to do exam IF you don't study. Anyways, Dr. Fong is a great teacher.
Dr. Fong is a great professor. He's strict, but it only helps his students in the long run. He preps students well for Chem 101A. Wrong answers count against right ones (on tests). Exams are based on lectures, so class attendance is necessary.
he is always on the comptuer to answer emails. my personal thoughts is he teaches better in responses to emails than in the lectures. but if you come every day, take good notes and read the chapters you'll do fine. he grades fairly, but will jump around in the textbook and make it hard to find where he is at.
Dr. Fong definitely has my respect. If you're looking for an easy way out, DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is extremely strict (yes, even on sig figs). Wrong answers count against right answers on tests. Your lab notebook must be properly organized. He teaches principles and concepts clearly in lecture, so if you want to pass, GO TO CLASS!
i like Dr.Fong eventho i didn't pass the class :) I just didn't study- meaning really hard studying. take notes take notes take notes. i'm telling million times cuz you'vetake notes to succeed and also the book.
He is very hard even if you are dedicated.Dr. Fong knows his subject and forgets that his students aren't chemist. Ouside his class he is a nice fella but that is not enough to teach a already hard subject. You won't get a A for sure!!
I didn't find him clear at all. I went to class everyday, took notes, studied alot, and feel lucky to have gotten a C.
Dr.Fong is the most patient and helpful instructor I have ever met. I enjoy his class because his lecture is clearly, pithy and organized. I could easily understand his lecture even though my English is not good enought to follow his class. In addition, Dr. Fong tried to improve students' habbits of study and obeying the class rule.
I am sorry. I made a mistake. The class should be Chem 32 instead of Chem 351.
This professor is so good. You would definitely learn a lot from him. Problem sets are all quite hard. But those homework really helped me to understand the subject matter better. Just go to class everyday, take good notes. Most especially, you have to understand the lessons very well. Ask questions if you find something hard.
I took my lab with him. I don't know about his class. But in the lab, he was pretty straight-forward. He explained every single thing very clear and he would tell you the simplest way to understand the material as long as you follow his instructions. Highly recommended!
The thing I like him is his efficiency. He Grades pretty fast and fair. Unlike other instructor, he replys email extremely fast. I usually ask him Qs via email and the fastest time I receive his email is within 15 mins. He often give a reply within 12 hrs. Exams are straight-forward. His notes will be the key of success in the exams.
An awesome professor. You will learn a lot from him.
Hate this guy!! Not clear in Lab requirements. I have not idea how I pass this class!! I went to the tutor everyday and still have nightmares about this guy!
The best professor i have ever met. His calculating way and solving way of problem is very short to the point, make me easy to remember and understand.
A for rigor. It's sink or swim. First 1/3 to 1/2 of the semester is general chemistry then you blast off into organic. If you need help, you are advised to go to tutoring. Otherwise, you get the fundamentals - no dumbing down because this isn't a prerequisite for Chem 101-(Chem 40 is and can be transferred to UC). He's helpful, but you have to ask.
Geez, way to kill my enthusiasm for science! This medical chemistry class was a nightmare. I felt the info was disorganized, moved incredibly fast and made expectations unclear. I fell behind quick and dropped at mid term.
I've never worked so hard in a class to receive a mediocre grade.
He is very condescending and impatient. His lecture's were so confusing I had to stop listening at points because I would end up more confused. The only people that did well in this class had previous Chem experience, most everyone else either failed or got our of there with a C. He made my life hell and is the worst teacher I've ever had by far.
I'm taking him for lab. He explains things very clearly and personally I think he's a good instructor. He's tough, but his grading is fair. A lot of people says he's impatient. I agree he can be, BUT, that is because people do not listen to him when he explains things the first time. He is strict on attendance so don't miss class or be late.
This is a "Medical Chemistry" class. Whats medical-related about it? Metabolism & how much ATP is formed within the LAST week?! POOR POOR schedule organization. Hes VERY impatient w/ those who didnt understand his lectures. Marks you off for every puny thing (thats petty). He gets a kick out of it! He also wears the same pants all semester
The people who didnt learn much from this class dont seem to know much period. I've never had a chem professor that helped me understand as easily as he did.He explains "why" for everything, his exams and quizzes are exactly like the homework, how can you fail? Wasted money buying the book, dont need it. Great Professor!
I had Dr. Fong for Chem 32 Fall 09. I wound up taking w Dr. Herrmann. You guys are missing out with Dr. H on leave. Dr. F has prospective nurses study suborbitals, use hydronium and hydroxide ions in calculations, though these are just left out in medicine as a practical matter. Dr. F is very impatient; *only* those w previous chem exp do well.
Dr. Fong is a good teacher, but he has rather annoying perks. Says "folks" and "by the way" so much you'll get tired of it. He's an excellent lecturer, but his exams are HARD. He tends to go over easy problems in class then leave you to flounder on his homework sets and exams. He's a hard grader as well. :(
Dr. Fong is a great teacher. However, he does expect A LOT from his students. I took him for 101A lab, and I thought his teaching style was reasonable. So I took him AGAIN for 101B. I don't regret taking him because I passed. I just wished I studied HARDER, and had gone to his office hours.
Dr Fong is the best! he's clear and very helpful. all u gotta do is pay attention in class, take notes. dont buy text cus u wont need it. DO HOMEWORK, it helps a lot and do practice exam if u can do those ull pass easily. good luck!
DO NOT take this class in the Summer!! There is not enough time to learn the concepts. Dr Fong loves Chem and is very responsive when you come to him for help. Even though this class is labeled a "refresher in Chemistry" it's still hard. You MUST pay attention and study a LOT. I would take again, but only during regular semesters!
i recommend this teacher than price because prices final is more unpredictable and much harder than his midterms. fongs test are much more consistent. I just took prices final and have to going repeat this course again because of his final. you should drop prices class while you still can so you can add this class or you will regret later in semest
Fong's lectures ("notes") are pretty convoluted. Supplementing them with the book can be very helpful. I got an A in this class by doing/checking the HW and just redoing HW problems before tests (& practice exam). If you feel comfy with them, you will on the test too. I hear he's very helpful in office hours so don't be shy.
Trust me DO NOT miss class. You need to show up every day, take good notes, do ALL the homework sets (hw problems are similar to his quizzes and exams, all of which are fair but he can be a little nit-picky about taking points off for tiny things) and utilize his office hours. He is open & helpful if you approach him for help. Don't buy the book!
A very good well-respected teacher who expects the students to do their best. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed only if you want to. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask him, he's there to help. Thank you, Dr. Fong!
Dr. Fong is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He is challenging, but he KNOWS that, which is why he curves. Struggle with his hw assignments (which don't really factor to your grade) and prepare for his exams. His exams are difficult because they are long, but he curves. He knows his subject and seeks for his students to learn chem,
I love love love Mr. Fong. I hate chemistry, gotta do it && Mr. Fong couldn't have been better.
L. Fong's Chem 32 class is time consuming/hard. If you do not have recent Chem experience you WILL struggle. He favors calculations; beware the the latter part of the semester, Organic Chem, is super frustrating and fast. Ask questions, ignore his impatience. Curves grades in an obscure but fair way; you won't know your grade til its over!
Concepts were straight forward and he wrote many example problems in class. He collected&graded homework sets but didn't count toward your grade. I took chemistry in high school so class was easy. I studied for tests using the homework sets and the practice exams. Didn't cover equilibrium and doesn't use textbook, but book helps for studying
Tough but wants students to learn. Long weekly homework, hard quizzes & exams. Posts the answer keys after and gives practice exams. Is impatient during class, go to office hrs. Gen. Chem is more well-taught; the latter part of the semester is Organic Chem section which he plows through in a confusing way. Overall I learned that I like chemistry!
He is TOUGH, but if you pay close attention and don't skip class, you'll make it. But wow...Really tough and dense course. I wouldn't recommend taking this with other science courses. You will definitely need time to dedicate to this course. Dr Fong is awesome, though. I had a lot of fun, although he can be scary at times.
L fong is cool. very easy. Curve is cool. Any Chem class is hard just have to STUDY and do the work. I had hurt for 40 and Su for 101A and I got A for both. I just had to put a lot of EFFORT in Chem. People who do bad in the class probably did not even try. Apparently I got all the hard teachers and still getting As, never had Chem besides in city.
Skilled at explaining the concepts of CHEM 32 (broad, but surface-level) with clarity and simplicity. Cares about the success of his students. Well-organized lectures. Quizzes and exams closely mirror weekly problem sets. Excellent feedback on homework and exams. Know basic algebra. Attend the lectures. Do the homework. Don't buy the book! A+.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I have asked him for help multiple times, and all he would say is to review the lecture notes. He explains things so fast and does not make concessions for people who are behind. If you forget to do the pre-labs he will kick you out of class and give you a zero! The only good thing out him is that he
Do not take over summer. If you have a job or anything else that may consume your time, this is not the class to take. You have to spend every moment dedicated to this class in order to pass in a little amount of time. There is a curve, but not great. He explains things once and won't elaborate if your confused or stuck. Not a good teacher at all.
Dr. Fong is a TOUGH professor, but if you dedicate time toward learning the material you will do fine. I took this class over the summer while working, so the class is doable, you just have to stay on top of your work. I have a BA in Art so chemistry is NOT my best subject, but Dr. Fong taught me a lot through this course. Be prepared to work HARD!
He invents his own grading curve which is unstandardized. Disrespectful, impatient, and mean. He pretends to be nice but if you ask him a lot , he would make fun of you in front of other students.
Do not take Chem with this guy. He grading is ridiculous, and if you ask him a question, not only will he not answer it, but he will make you feel stupid for asking. He expects you to know as much as he does as a chemistry professor and has completely unrealistic expectations of his students. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Fong's Chem 32 class is time consumin and hard. If you do not have recent Chem experience you WILL struggle. He favors calculations; beware the the latter part of the semester, Organic Chem, is super frustrating and fast. Ask questions, ignore his impatience. Curves grades in an obscure but fair way; you won't know your grade til its over!
One of the worst lecturers I've ever had. He goes through problems too fast, without actually spelling out what the problem is, so when you get to homework you have no idea what to do with it. 4 exams+final. Exams are sooo much harder than anything he actually explains or gives as homework. Doesn't like questions. If you can, ADVOID him for 101B.
You will learn a lot of things in his class. If you truly want to learn chem, take his class. Otherwise, this class it too hard for you.
Dr. Fong is organized and explains concepts very clearly. It's easy to take notes that are directly applicable to what will be included on quizzes and exams. As long as you take your time to do the homework and pay attention in class then there are no surprises when it comes to the quizzes and exams. Highly recommend his class!
Dr. Fong is a great teacher. His lectures are funny, and understandable. The way he teaches builds on itself, so if you don't get something and don't try to understand, you'll fall behind. This is the nature of this subject though. There are a lot of tests/quizzes, but he provides a ton of practice quizzes and exams, and goes over the homework sets
Not as bad as I thought! Lectures are not mandatory, but will be very helpful and you will feel behind when you come to the next class because lectures/skills build on. Mandatory LAB! Homework & Quizzes every week. NO EXTRA CREDIT. Keep your homeworks & quizzes to study from. Create flashcards for Functional Groups, you'll thank me later!
Dr. Fong will help you become a better problem solver. His problems are often unique, and go beyond the scope of the book. The practice problems usually show fragmented concepts and techniques, but his exam problems will have you using everything you know to isolate unknowns and make assumptions. They're extremely challenging, but exhilarating.
He is strict, but very organize. He knows what to do. His grading system may seem strict, but that actually what encouraged me to study. He curves too, so do not be too anxious. If you really want to be success and try hard enough, your hard work will get paid off.
Hands down the worst teacher Ive ever encountered. Hes mean, spiteful and doesnt seem to have any real sense of direction other than making the course as difficult as possible. Avoid this tenured unhappy professor at all costs.
Doesn't explain topics well. Doesn't clearly state steps in problems and goes too fast. He doesn't make sure you have basics down before asking more advanced problems. Like quizzes and exams are often reworded in a ways which we have not seen in lecture or the homework. I wish he offered extra credit
ANY chemistry class takes major effort outside of class, regardless of the prof. It's the nature of the subject. He seemingly carelessly rolls through huge amount of new material during lecture, but it took me a bit to realize he's telling the class exactly what they need to know. HW sets prepare you for exactly what you'll be tested on. Up to you.
Take notes in lectures, do prelabs and spend time doing the homework. Exams based on homework problems. Do the work and you will pass. Try not to miss lectures or labs. Tough grader but does curve. Lots of information and calculations. Get help from chemistry tutors if you struggle with concepts.
Dr. Fong teaches a hard subject so kudos. Homework sets are pretty hefty so space it out. Lectures are pretty clear as he provides a plethora of examples and lists of steps for what to do. Although lectures arent mandatory, unlike lab, they do help A LOT. Tests and quizzes somewhat resemble homework, but he does tend to reword it pretty heavily.
Routinely sets homework that is due before he teaches what the homework is testing you on. Will mark you down for not doing it the way he hasnt yet taught you.
One of the worst teachers Ive ever come across. Understandable that he teaches a really hard subject but overall as a person he is mean, rude, and talks down to those who try to understand the subject in class. Specifically in intro to medical chem, he teaches as if it is NOT an intro. We need more genuine people teaching, not him.
You can find all his problem set's answer online. He will give out practice exam for the first three than a comprehensive final at the end of the semester. However, the actual exam is different than the practice one so you better do your homework and read the book yourself. His Lab is easy. Everything is step by step.
only prof online fall 2020 (no way to skip him) . His accent makes difficult to understand the material (videos are incomprehensible). He don't explain just read the material. Lab, hard to resolve without a guide. Tests are hard, HW is also hard takes time to do. Best way to study from websites. No practice test. a lot of material to read.
Pros: - clear agenda, fast reply, up to date score, curve score a little bit Cons: - boring lecture (he just read off the note), lots of homework, test heavy and tough grader I have this class online and it was a painful experience. By the second exam, the classs median score drops from C+ to D. Look for other classes, this classs not worth it
Every week theres a timed quiz, problem sets AND lab assignments due! he doesnt do lecture or zoom, he just records himself reading off NOTES. I have to go on YouTube to learn anything. He is unclear on how he wants the work done, and will deduct points for every little mistake. This has been such a painful experience. Find a different prof.
Find another professor. He is very bad with online teaching. His assignments are so scattered and he posts assignments the day before with no notice. I am feeling so helpless right now. His lecture videos are dreadful. He just reads off a word document that is not even zoomed in. I am already bad at chemistry and he makes it worse!
Took this as an online class and it was tough but the lectures were thorough. READ THE BOOK BEFORE LECTURE, to preview what he is talking about in his notes. I got an A in the class by going to every single office hour, asking questions, and reading through the feedback. He gives detailed feedback on all assignments so you know where to improve.
Fong is a HARD grader, but knowledgable and very helpful. Near impossible to get a 100 on tests and quizzes but it is curved. Extremely detailed oriented ie. spelling matters. This is a tough class, very fast paced. You must stay on top of prob sets, and practice tests to do well - practice and practice. FORM A STUDY GROUP and attend OFFICE HOURS.
Dr. Fong is a great professor. It is definitely a tough class, but he curves tests and simply expects you to learn the material. He offers many office hours and is there to answer any question you might have, very patiently. He knows his stuff and you WILL learn if you apply yourself. Go to office hours, it is invaluable facetime with the prof.
CHEM101B is hard and Dr. Fong does not make it any easier. The "lectures" consist of weekly Word docs paired with videos in which he reads the Word docs almost verbatim. Tests contain a 65/35 spread of problems you've seen before and problems that make you say "wtf?". Homework is due weekly and is difficult. He responds to emails frequently though.
