The best math prof at laurier I've had. Managed to make a very difficult course interesting. Heavy workload with large weekly assignments, but was extremely fair with marking and exams. Adds a lot of value to just reading the text.
best Maths Dc. in WlU. He teaches in a very creative and humorous way. very logical and precise in teaching. Don't hesitate if you have a chance to take his course.
The best math instructor I have ever had. Tests are extremely fair and he tells you exactly what you need to do to succeed in his course. His teaching style is very interesting and he seems to bring energy and excitement to math which is very refreshing. Take a course with him if you can!
Very Helpful! Great lectures. Always knew exactly what was expected and what to know. Best prof I have had by far!
AWESOME PROF!
Good prof easy to understand and follow along with. Can sometimes be rude but is often humorous and witty. Good math prof for sure.
Tells you EXACTLY what to expect when it comes to midterms/exams and does so very clearly. Very approachable on the rare occasion that you don't understand something. Overall terrific instructor.
Great Prof. He is clear with what he wants and teaches you in an organized manner. Wish he would teach the second part of Calculus.
He has to be the most amazing prof I ever had! Make sure to go to class because most of his examples end up being on his exams! If you understand him in class and do homework there is no doubt in getting an A+
Dr. Howe is an okay professor. he is somewhat helpful in class but i went talk to him after class, he was not helpful at all. He is very hard to talk to if you have trouble with math. He isn't encouraging at all. He told me since i failed the midterm, that i should have dropped out. I PASSED THE COURSE though! don't let him discourage u! stick 2 it
For analysis courses HIGHLY recommend going to class, and taking it with Howe if you have the option. Course is not easy, but he is the best teacher you can get for it
Highly recommend going to class if you want to feel degraded, talked down too and told that every exampleclicker you are seeing is "an easy one", even though you were just taught it seconds ago. He will tell you to drop the class if you don't do well on the midterm, instead of maybe getting some extra help or working a little harder. Terrible.
Worst math prof, is really sarcastic and tells you to drop the course if you end up failing the midterm instead of encouraging you to work harder. The course gets really difficult and faster paced after the midterm.
Has a quirky sense of humor that always had me laughing. Tries to explain things many different ways. Has pre-calc quizzes online that you can do and get up to 5% on your entire grade! Lectures help you follow the material, but if you miss class the textbook is very detailed. Exams are on exactly what you learn in class, no surprises.
take math seriously and you'll do great. lectures are organized and easy to follow along with. do the bonus math modules for sure!
Great professor. Cracks tons of jokes and is constantly quoted on spotted. Super easy class!
Great professor, makes you think through with the class. He really want to help, discussion board was created so that he can answer questions and provide critiques on your proof. The course is very tough and he demand a lot from the student, not only the examples from assignment but also the theorems proved in class. Expect half of the class fail.
Very effective teaching methods through his use of typed skeleton notes and proofs and examples done in class. Lots of material to cover, but Dr. Howe is the best lecturer for it. Tests were fair but were generally unfavorable for others, in fail ranges without adjustments. Powerful feedback for assignments or practice problems. HIGHLY recommend.
This prof is an upper year math professor, so it was difficult for him to teach the lowest level of math in first year. By the end of the term he became a great prof. The tutorialslabs is the hard part. If you show up to the lectures and take notes, you're golden!
Larry is one of the best profs out there. With his hysterical jokes and his awkward running, he changes the class environment by making everyone laugh. He is always helpful when you ask him questions and makes you think through with the class.
Larry is one of my favourite profs ever. He makes me laugh every class because his jokes are hysterical even though he uses the same one every time. He is a very good prof and seems to know what he is doing. He is always helpful when you ask him questions and he always answers your question with a pun.
he is a mathmatician not a teacher. Makes calculus harder than it is and expects you to write pages of written notes and not examples of how to apply those notes. Make sure you do the practice questions to do well in labs but over lectures have no relevance to the lab assignments or quizzes.
The guy is hilarious, standard university math teacher whose midterms are somewhat challenging. That being said he is very fair and wants the best for his students.
The course is basically high school calculus (MCV 4U). Dr. Howe is a great lecturer and kind of funny. Definitely my favourite teacher.
This mane is the bane of my existence. He's always going on about "the top of hills and the bottom of valleys" and has a blog literally titled "why you suck at math" like what? He makes the clickers super hard an expects a response in like 5 seconds. If you're lucky you'll find someone to copy off of in lab but watch out for the midterms and finals
Great prof!! You don't need the textbook for this course so make sure to take notes for every lecture! He made the final easy and hopes everyone successful
MA129 is not a bird course anymore and it does not help to have Lawrence as a prof. The midterm and final were extremely hard.
Attending lecture is key if you don't want to fall behind, and there are clicker questions every class. Notes are very clear, but the examples done in class most of the time aren't what you see in labs/on tests. His questions are fair and require an understanding of calculus, not just repeating processes. Study well and you should do fine.
He is very clear when explaining material and has excellent notes. He does use clickers every class however, as long as you pay attention in class, you will do well as majority of the class gets them right. Labs were fair as long as you did the homework. The midterm/final were straight forward as well and had no tricks! :)
Lectures are easily set up but his exams are TOUGH. Make sure you TAKE calculus in high school, otherwise you'll struggle a lot!
Not the best prof. Tends to make students feel bad if they don't understand the material. Lectures are clear and understandable but tests are quite hard. Go to lecture and take notes.
Professor Howe's lecture content is similar to calc in highschool, it will be tough for those who did not take calc in highschool. Going to lectures are crucial as he does notes in class and clicker marks. Be aware of the midterm and final as those are tougher than the other work done in class.
Although I never went to his office hours or anything he has a site completely dedicated to MA129 where you have all homework solutions and tutorial video done by him for each and every question/lecture
Very smart guy, knows the subject matter but tends to explain things more complicated than they need to be. If you took calculus in high school the course it mostly review, but if you didn't I wouldn't recommend skipping class or homework.
He was kinda hard, not very helpful
hardest linear alg course ever
Lawrence is a funny guy, but he's a savage. Expect to get chirped both online and in lecture. His midterms and final were tough.
Great Prof overall. A little tough on the midterms and exam with some tricky questions. If you did well in Calculus in grade 12 then you will be fine in this course. Loves the clicker questions though!
I took calc in high school and was still shocked at the difficulty of this course. Seriously, multiple choice for a math exam??? It felt like this whole course was designed so it was difficult for students to be successful unless your work is absolutely flawless. You can tell he is passionate about math but his class turned me off of it forever
awesome
Ahh Lawrence, good teacher who both chirps his students and provides jokes from time to time. Exam can be difficult if you don't do all the homework.
Does not offer assistance to students. Makes stupid jokes that can be inappropriate. Makes students feel dumb in class and continuously gives lectures on failing the course.
i wish he was my uncle
He is a tough grader and makes exams difficult. He does not explain course concepts well. Also makes the lab assignments difficult compared to what he teaches in class. Try to switch to another prof if you can.
He's a good prof. He explains concepts (relatively) well, and if you study you should pass easily. Throws in some jokes in the lectures sometimes too. They're not the best though.
Wish he was related to me so I could hear his jokes again once I'm done taking the course. Professor wise, he's smart, knows his information very well and gives you opportunities to grasp the course content well. Some people think he's rude but honestly if you can learn not to be such a sensitive adult then you'll see hes an amazing prof.
Lawrence Howe is probably the worst professor I had first year. I hate the way he lectures and explains things. Definitely not my style of learning. I would recommend to not have him. Labs have nothing to do with what he teaches in class. SOOOOOO goooood luck. Man is constantly hitting his knee on the desk too LOLs.
Very difficult, did not post solutions online, did not give good reviews, did not care about students, and was under the impression that math was the only course that we had so all of our time should have been committed to it... yeah right
his final was ridiculous. fill in the blank and not even multiple choice. one question was worth 4 marks and you had to fill in the blank with one number. if u dont get the right number u lose 4 marks. why does he want students to fail????????????
MA129 is a fairly straight forward course if you took calculus in high school. If not, you can still do well it just requires extra work. Dr. Howe gives reasonable explanations, but sometimes I did get a little lost in his lectures. He does a lot of examples in class which helps you understand, and does answer any questions you may have.
Dr. Howe is a tough math lecturer. Following his lectures is impossible if you don't attempt the practice problems beforehand. He seems completely unapproachable, and doesn't have any interest whatsoever in seeing you pass the course. Labs are also excessively difficult for no reason. Intelligent guy but he should care more about students.
I didn't take calc in highschool and did well in this class. If you put work into it (DO THE HOMEWORK) you will do fine
The course was an absolute joke if you succeeded in high school calculus. There was also an opportunity to get an extra 5% in the course for not too much work. I would recommend going to class as he does not post the slides. People also hyped him up as condescending but I did not think he was bad at all.
Not the nicest teacher you'll come across. Very rude, and pretentious. His final exam is really difficult since he loves to use Ln, Log, e, and other characters they don't focus in on High School Calc.
Smart prof but can't teach well. Lecture slides are not posted and he goes through each slide way to fast. Also no laptops so get ready to write.
Funny guy. Kinda tricky when it comes to midterms but pretty good teacher. But if youre undergrad BBA, you dont really have a choice. Gotta just take it.
Amazing prof! Definitely my fav at Laurier! Class is MANDATORY but is enjoyable since its interactive. I understand why BBA students don't like him since he's too smart for MA129 but for higher level math courses he is great at explaining concepts. If you make an effort he is always happy to help. Though his tests are real hard and a tough marker!
So blessed. Often cancels class.
Lawrence Howe is extremely difficult if you are not good at math. He makes calc extremely hard and unnecessarily makes his exams hard as well. I would not take his class again. He makes math hard, and I am weak at math to start off with so I am not a fan of him.
Fairly difficult midterm but easy final exam (most people finished early). His lectures can get kind of confusing but it's important that you try to follow along and get the clicker marks. Labs assignments are either really hard each week or extremely easy -there's no in between. Take the final seriously because you need 40% to pass the course.
The examples that Howe does in class will only be beneficial if you had a B-ish (75+) math background in grade 12. From high school, I was used to teachers teaching from the bottom->up, but Howe teaches from the middle->up. You'll have to prepare yourself beforehand if you're not confident in your math skills
Exam and midterm were fairly difficult. Marking scheme very flawed, lots of free marks. He is very tough to listen too as he teaches math with words.
Although I found the course quite easy (took high school calculus), Lawrence Howe would constantly undermine students by making snarky and snide comments that were not very funny. If you took high school calculus and did well this course will be easy. Although prof is not very good, you must attend lecture to get clicker grades.
Man doesn't know how to explain stuff
I thought he was a good prof-- explained the concepts clearly and concisely and often let us go early. Midterm was easy and final was very straight forward. On the final they only mark your final answer -not any of your work. Labs were pretty easy as well- if you did the webwork you could easily get 100% on the quiz
He's not bad, the info itself seems pretty easy however
Great guy who actually cares about his students, and pushes them to do well. At times a bit abrasive, but the kind of guy you need to meet in first year to help with the first year experience.
ZAP!!!!! Guy is a bit of a beast and def slams beers the night before his lecture cuz the guy does not show up. Overall, a bit of a beauty but his integral lessons are brutal.
very unprofessional. Skips many lectures, and expects you to understand the concepts. makes learning calculus very difficult and does not give part marks on the final exam. As you need a 40% on the final exam to pass the class, achieving this is very difficult as you need to get the answer correct to get any marks. Goodluck
Lawrence Howe comes off as insensitive and makes some jokes in class. Slight dad humour and will roast you if you get the answers wrong but not a hard course by any means. Do the WeBwork and if you have issues do some pearson questions before labs and youll be fine for labs. the exam i studied for 3 days before and got a 12.
Lawrence Howe will roast you if you ask any questions that are answered in the student guide and is somewhat rude. That being said, he makes the midterm and final quite fair. If you know your stuff and/or taken calculus in high school, this class isnt too bad. Youd better go to class though because Howe sure loves those clickers !
Definitely an organized prof, regarding posting about updates and lecture materials. However he is very rude to his students and won't hesitate to call you/others out in front of the entire lecture hall. His teaching style is alright, however I still would've preferred to have the original prof for this course, unfortunately he was away.
Will never take this professor again, worst experience.
Extremely rude to his students and doesn't give you time to copy lectures. His classes are boring and I have noticed they are never full. Most people don't even want to attend this professor's class.
I had some shady private school credit for advanced functions and never took calculus. Needless to say, I was worried I would fail. But Lawrence Howe was an excellent professor, he went through examples carefully and made it easy to understand. Go to class, do ALL the homework and you'll be more than fine in this course. I got an 11.
Same thing you get with every math teacher. Teaches basic principles, assigns easy homework and then throws intense application on the labs and exams. I wish he would just teach hard examples in class so we are prepared?
the guy flat out sucks, lecture slides will be unnecessarily long with useless transitions within each slide. Couldn't even tell his students how many marks the final is out of, like really?? No other prof has done this. The guy needs to re-evaluate his teaching style and his slides. Hope I never have him again.
Just trash. He is so unorganized in terms of online resources, cannot even name a file properly. If you dont go to class goodluck passing. I used to like math, until he became my prof.
Horrible. Often said obviously this is the answer. When it clearly isnt obvious. Slides do not have enough space for what is needed to be filled in. Will not take his class again. The exam is also worth 50% which is extremely stressful and overwhelming.
Lawerence Howe is an overall nice prof, he was accessible during office hours and through email. He did not make me feel prepared for the exam (weight 50%). The exam questions were 100x more difficult than any of the lectures or Pearson questions. I wish he went in-depth on harder problems and offered more support near the exam.
The lectures did not help me understand the content. I had to use the textbook and labs to understand the concepts.
Horrible math teacher. Prior to this course, I was an above-average student in calculus. He was horrible at explaining anything and so no one showed up to class. The exam was hard and probably failed the course. (in order to pass the class you have to pass the exam)
Lawrence is an amazing math prof. I was good at math in high school, but was never amazing and I understood all of his lectures easily. So many people say that he's bad at teaching but most of them don't even show up to class. If you attend his lectures and put in the work, aka do the Pearson problems, it's easy to do well.
He posts his slides and does not do clickers so there is no reason to go to his class. I found his lecture style hard to learn from but his slides helped relatively well. How he handled the shift to online coursework due to COVID-19 was not ideal.
I took MA129 in the fall semester and Lawrence Howe was a very average professor - not bad but not amazing either. If you took MCV4U in high school there is no reason to go to class for the first 10 weeks. Most course work is fair but the in person final exam was pretty brutal (dropped my mark by 10%) - Make sure you pay attention near the end.
Had so much anxiety from taking this class. If you didn't calculus in high school like me you'll most likely struggle. Don't leave things until the last minute, and this is a class where no matter how well you do in the class, if you flunk the final you'll fail. To pass you need to get above a 40% on the final and its easier said than done.
Not a great professor or guy, very rude and short with email responses and treats students as if they are stupid when they ask questions during lectures. Definitely recommend studying for labs as you will want a high mark in those going into the 50% final which is very difficult!! Try to stay on top of each lessons homework to make studying easier!
Howe was a good professor, as far as math is concerned. He gave us time during lecture to work out problems on our own, answered all questions clearly, and for the most part lectures prepared us for the weekly labs. He knew what he was teaching. Very dry andserious though, would recommend if you want a good prof without the emotion. Acknowledged us
He is making us memorize 10+ half a page to page proofs. On a semester where the exam period is like a week (S 2020). Inconsiderate and waste of our time when we have 5 other courses and no time to study. Other than that this course is trash. He wrote one of the questions wrong on the mid. No marks received to compensate for HIS ERROR.
Absolutely awful experience. I enjoy calc, I'm not the best but this guy ruined it for me. His monotone lectures make it insanely difficult to process what he says, he explains his lectures as if we are first year business students, rather math majors in fourth year. Exam sets you up for failure. Terrible, I'm shocked Laurier supports his methods.
He's a decent teacher and he is generally available to help. Extremely hard marker though, he doesn't really give part marks. The course is hard enough as it is and he doesn't make it any easier.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR MA250. Worst course ever the final was brutal and he marked it really hard. I studied for 40+hrs for the final and didnt even get a 60 on it. I know a lot of people who didnt get the 40 they needed to pass. It was his first time teaching it and he graded way to hard and made the exams impossible.
I don't think he understands that not everyone in bba took calculus so he actually needs to teach it to us.
At first glance, Dr. Howe may not seem like the BEST professor at Laurier. However, if you listen to his lectures, seek help and do your work, you are set up for success. I am currently finishing his course and he is extremely accommodating and definitely hears you if you raise a concern. Overall, a very nice professor.
Gives students many opportunities to succeed (gives 2/3 marks for iClicker for just answering + drops your lowest lab & webwork marks). Not to mention, when students were stressing about using an online calculator, he allowed us to use our own. out of all the professors I've had during this pandemic, he's the most understanding & considerate.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with Dr. Howe as a professor, having heard many conflicting opinions. The instructional videos he devised for the course concepts were quite helpful, and his grading scheme for the course was likely the most considerate of any prof I've had yet. I highly recommend him.
Loved Dr Howe! He was so accommodative during the pandemic, listened to all concerns, and would even give students pieces of advice when they were stressed over school. He explains concepts clearly, and is very fair on quizzes and the final exam. Howe made the calculus experience better.
I've seen some bad ratings of Howe but my experience with him was nothing but pleasant. It's not the most entertaining course, but it's math. That's to be expected. He gives you the tools to succeed and if you actually put in the time and effort it's not hard to do so.
Dr. Howe is good at what he does and is always available to help students. He adapted his course perfectly for online learning. It was tough towards the end, but not too bad if you apply yourself!
Howe is a good professor who provides lots of opportunities for students to ask questions to understand the content. Lectures are long but easy to follow. homework is needed to be done to prepare for labs and make sure you study for exams. would recommend if you want a no-nonsense professor who is monotone and hardly smiles.
Quite easy with open book tests. Solid prof who is very professional and well organized. Do not buy the textbook for MA129, do the bonus modules for easy 5% bonus, and watch the pre-recorded videos and you should be fine.
He is the least interactive professor ive ever had. He does not care to fully review topics he just assumes you already know this difficult math from high school. This is the hardest first year class you will have if he is your prof...
He is the sweetest man I've ever met. I have this course remote so it is relatively easy with it being open book. Join your classes discord (it's very helpful) and buying the textbook isn't necessary. Make sure to just watch the lectures and complete the WeBWork and Labs and you'll do great! (Recommend attending his tutorials, very helpful)
I thought that through his video lectures, Dr. Howe greatly increased my interest in math. He made his videos really interesting them and they are some of few that kept me engaged. Many people found his final exam (S2020) difficult but if you understood his in-class examples, most of the questions could be done easily. Would love to have him again.
His lecture videos were posted online. Hard to understand, only goes over easy examples. The midterm was easy, but the final worth 45% was unlike anything we had seen before. MAKE SURE TO DO THE 5% BONUS MARK MODULES.
Spent two days making a sheet containing all the concepts for the final, and it turns out it contains the most complicated stuff from the course. I did my webwork and studied, and then I get screwed by this. It was all fair before on the midterm and labs, and then the final was made hard because you need over 40% to pass. Unforgiveable.
Prof. Howes lecture content is very informative, however he lacks the application present within the lectures to provide students with a good understanding on how to do the final and mid-term. The final exam prep could have been done more effectively - highly recommend doing the 5% bonus modules though
Labs and Webwork are easy. The midterm was easy. Appreciate that any method of math can be used as long as it is actually math. (Doesn't have to be specifically his method). Labs have little correlation to webwork. Pre-recorded tutorials lack detail. The final exam was much harder than the entire year. Final exam worth 45% of mark.
Grade is determined by midterm/final/homework/labs. Online labs + homework was easy, same as the midterm. The final wasn't realistically too hard, but you should definitely study each unit from the pre-recorded vids to make sure you can solve the questions. There are also a bunch of mocks and extrahelp sessions which can be useful if you need it
Pre-recorded lectures lacked detail so I spent most of the course learning concepts on Youtube which was much more useful. Labs did not really correlate to the Webwork. Midterm was decent, but final was very challenging. Final consisted of much more challenging problems. For those that didn't take calc in high school, this course can be difficult.
He taught a very inconsistent class. We had an online midterm, multiple choice, 20 questions, super easy worth a whole 30% and then we had a messed up in person exam, with little to no part marks, worth 45% of our mark, in which he even took some students calculators, including mine, offering no substitution or replacement.
The final exam was an absolute joke for this class. You were only able to write your final answer in a box and receive no part marks for the whole test. This was proctored and closed book exam worth 45% of our grade. On top of that Lawrence's lectures were terrible and he was not helpful at all often not answering questions I had after lectures.
I can't say too much about the professor because I never went to an in-person lecture, but the structure of the course wasn't bad. Weekly labs help boost your marks and deepen your understanding. Final exam was very fair. A lot of people I know including myself got above 90%-100%. Make sure you use the Pearson practice problems to study.
MA129 was only offered in the online version during Spring 2022. There was Webwork worth 24% of the grade, with 2 Midterms being worth 13% each, and Final being worth 50%. There were lecture videos. Test questions are similar to practice problems, this course is bird; Grade 12 math with some additions. Howe was very accommodating, would recommend.
Calculus exam, final answer only. Need I say more? One tiny deviation in your mathematical process leading to being off by a few decimals costs you that mark. Completely unfair conditions for the final exam, honestly a joke of a prof. He's crazy smart though, but taching ability? forget it.
he is misunderstood
Math final only graded by final answer is a joke and highly unfair
Very unfair class. Exam was worth 50% and you had to pass it to pass the class, however, he only graded final answers so even if you make a small mistake but had the right process, you will get a 0. Many students failed due to his extremely tough marking process. I dont understand why he is so tough on first year bba students, very frustrating.
Lawrence's a great professor whose explanations for the solutions for the questions are easy to understand. Once you review the lecture slides and do many practice questions, you should be good to go. Just make sure for labs to find yourself a good group. Overall, a very easy course.
Yall are overhyping how hard this is, its not bad just actually learn and you'll pass. You did poorly because you had actually smart people carry you in labs and help with your webwork so you never actually learned any of the concepts fully. I just used the proffesors exam review guide which was very helpful and did well.
He's a terrible prof, goes too fast and you won't be able to learn anything new in his class. I got a good grade because I had taken calc in high school so I already knew the course content. There is a lot of emphasis on exams and a lot of weekly work. The only good part is that you can get a good grade in the course if you do well in the final.
Lectures are overcomplicated and get confusing very quickly. Only reason I did so well was because most of the class was review from grade 12 calculus but as soon as we went into new material, I was completely lost. Final is a lot of grade 12 review again but only your final answer gets graded, making it super unfair and the average insanely low.
if you took calc in hs ma129 should be a snooze for you. easy course and lawrence howe is very good at explaining the content. midterm was soft, final was fair. make sure to use the textbook practice questions to study for the final
I'm surprised by all the bad reviews. In my opinion he was a great professor. Very organized and super clear lectures. He understood what he was talking about and tried his best to engage the class in the material being taught. He answers questions very clearly as well. Midterm was very difficult but final was very fair.
Howe is kinda dead average when it comes to his teaching skills. He's a nice guy though and the final was extremely fair. If you can do all the problems he posts on the select review doc he posts its an easy 12
Prof was okay. Teaches math through slideshows instead of writing it out. MA129 is easier to understand if you took calc in grade 12. We had one midterm with only mcq's and a final with mcq's and written answers, only your final answer is marked and not your process which is extremely unfair since you can't get part marks for the process.
The final was super unfair, it was based on writing the final answer and steps did not count. He would not be in class most of the time and would cancel his classes and office hours. It was difficult for people to understand because sometimes when there were classes he would do early dismissal.
Good prof, he is a nice guy. Teaches clearly, marks fairly. If you don't understand concepts, ask for help as he is very helpful. Also put some practice into the later concepts in order to succeed in his course.
I think its clear that he really does not enjoy being a prof and doesnt care to properly teach the students.
He was a little dramatic at times, but was a good enough prof.
Liked him as a prof overall. His lectures usually went by material fairly quickly, so it was difficult to take notes while simultaneously paying attention, and his exams are a bit more difficult than other classes, although if you are prepared, then they're not that bad. Overall, decent prof, no real issues with him or how taught.
The prof is hit or miss, but if you put in the effort and use resources like the textbook and Unstuck study, you can do well. The final is tricky, so make sure to practice those review problems.
Not great at explaining lecture content, all the professor did was read slides and not explain with greater detail. Really hard to understand and keep up with course content.
Looks like a ostrich eating spinach.
Lil bro does not know how to teach. If you haven't taken calculus in grade 12, don't waste your time coming to lectures, may as well spend that time watching skibidi toilet. Generally never had a clue what was going on that class.
Lectures were fast paced with content being explained in complicated ways. Difficult to get an understandable answer to any questions you may have after lectures. No part marks on exams with marks only being given for final answers.
He goes way too fast in lectures and seems like he does not care about his job. It seems like he's always in a rush.
His lectures went very quick, would feel like we just got into a concept and then class was over. Content was mostly Gr.12 calc but then a few added things in the end but then the homework and labs were much more complex. The midterm and exam are messed up giving no partial marks and being much more difficult then class or labs.
Regardless of what these reviews say, Dr. Howe wasn't that bad. As long as you show up to class and actually do the textbook problems, you'll be fine. You just have to actually try and not expect everything to be easy.
Mainly, the professor goes through lecture slides very quickly but if you go to the lecture and participate with practice problems, and utilize the textbook, the content is quite easy. The first six or seven weeks were mainly grade 12 calculus review but the midterm and final were mainly based on things covered during lecture.
Need to do lots of extra reading and practice in order to understand concepts.
Howe is an okay professor. The guy is nice but you're better off teaching yourself the concepts through Youtube. The reviews are exaggerating the midterm and exam, they are seriously not that difficult if you put some effort into studying and practicing. Do the 5 bonus marks and practice the Pearson problems to achieve a high mark
His lectures were aight. Many complain about him going too fast and explaining things in an unnecessarily hard way. I personally didn't feel this, although to be fair I also skipped more than half the lectures. Content itself was pretty light, you can easily learn by yourself. Finished the course with a 100% (Had a 76% in high school calc).
Easy if you took high school calc, the midterm and final both have very low averages. Do the 5 bonus marks, very helpful.
Great prof but the material for the last 3/4 weeks of the course is delivered poorly. Labs aren't too bad, midterm was easy but exam was harder. Keep in mind, I took calc & vec in high school.
Decent math prof as a whole but his lectures were fast, he didn't explain concepts in detail and he didn't give partial marks on the final. It was either multiple choice or you would have to put your final answer in a little box and if it wasn't correct, you got a 0 for that question. No partial marks whatsoever which made things pretty difficult.
Wow! Dr. Howe is an incredibly great professor. Get this man a raise. He is so good at teaching math and has opened my eyes to so many concepts I have learned previously but have gotten a better grasp under his teaching. Amazing, amazing job.
Professor Howe is not very understanding. I reached out regarding some concerns and his response was dismissive, essentially saying that students should just deal with it because that's how the “real world” works. Lectures are fine and there's quite a bit of homework.
overcomplicates basics
Everyone I know hated on him, so I was worried when I first started the class. However, he is the best math teacher I have every had and I have never understood concepts more. The final was not even that hard, he assigns so many homework questions every week and the exam questions were the easiest textbook ones. Also do the bonuses and get 5% added
He seems to be a kind caring person. But he is not the best at teaching, talks very fast, speeds through lectures. I find it very hard to learn when he is just clicking through slides within a minute thinking we understood.
He is a nice professor, but often goes through the material too quickly. Labs are also difficult. I don't mind, but he cancels lectures a lot. I paid tuition.
Awful professor in every way, I stopped even going to lectures because of how terrible he is. You're better off teaching the course to yourself from the textbook, going to his lectures only makes it more confusing. Would never recommend but I don't think there's any other options for MA129.
Prof went through lectures extremely quickly leading to lots of confusion. You could sit in a 50 minute lecture and have no understanding after then go home and watch a 5 minute youtube video on the topic. Nice guy but the lectures aren't worth attending. Course is much easier if you took calc in highschool.
lectures make no sense if you didnt take calc in gr 12
Funny dude. Three ways of succeeding in MA129:1.understand calculus from grade 12 (what i did) 2. actually try and learn the content and practice every day 3. make friends with competent people in labs to get free 25%, dont try on the midterm because you will probably drop it anyway and spam out every question on the practice exams cuz its 1 to 1
The course content is not hard, especially if you've taken grade 12 calculus. However, professor Howe's lectures are confusing and he often overcomplicates simple concepts. I ended up stop going to the lectures and just decided to teach myself the content through youtube videos, which proved to be way more effective.
Dr. Howe is super passionate about his subject and explains math in a visual way that makes it interesting and enjoyable, even for people who dislike math. He moves quickly and can be blunt, which makes note-taking challenging, but it is clear that he truly loves math.
