I thought Keel was a good instructor. He has a passion for the subject and his teaching.
The Professor knows his stuff (he has a PHD from USC by the way). Can be a little aloof at times and tends to hand back graded material late, but he is very interesting and doesn't shove his beliefs down your throat like some professors do.

Keel is AWESOME. He's the coolest teacher I've ever had. Ok, so he's not so good about handing stuff back. You get it back eventually. And he's cool about grading. He is the least teachery teacher I've ever had. If that makes any sense. I learned SO MUCH.
Good teacher. Well informed and laid back. The assingments and tests are not too hard. Not too much note taking. You'll definitely walk out knowing more about poems, short stories and Shakespeare. He some times fails to listen to his students or doesn't allow them to interject. Other than that, I recommend the class.
If you look the only people that put a negative mark on him didn't have anything to say to back up their opinion. I had him and I'm not that interested in writing a lot of essays, but he wasn't that bad. We had to write a certain amount in order to complete the class but he gave us plenty of time, notice and help.
I dropped the class after the fourth or fifth meeting. I couldn't stand Mr. Keel. He's way to opinionated. He constantly bashed Presidents Bush and Reagan. I don't think its wrong to have an opinion about politics, it's just wrong to complain about it during a class having to do with Literature. So in my opinion, Keel sucks!
Keel is very knowledgeable, although his class lacks the kind of organization and varied activity structure that would help with class involvement and output. He needs to organize his delivery much better, and think of more activities to help his students more.
Keel is a great film teacher because he really does enjoy film. He's not a snob when it comes to preferences and when it comes to grading, he gives credit where credit is due. Definitely take his film class.
Great guy. Helped me express my poetic side. Sorry to hear he can't do poetry readings at Blender Brothers anymore.
Keel is absolutely amazing. Clear lectures and just all-around cool. He's so knowledgeable about a lot of things, and not afraid to share his viewpoints.

Mr. Keel rocks! If you ever need help with your essays, he always makes himself available to see you. Also, he goes over and beyond that and will help you with your personal statement. Writing this is the least that can be done to credit how much this professor has helped me with my personal statement. I'll still buy you that candy bar if you want!
Made me discover another side of film. Very clear in what he wants from students and very helpful. Take his classes.
Sometimes he can be fun and funny and good with pop culture stuff. But he is very opinionated. If you are a Republican don't take his class. He absolutley hates Ronnie Regan and Dubya (just like somebody already said). You have to be a dedicated reader too, he only gives you a little bit of time to read a whole book.
I loved loved loved him. He's super nice and laid back. He's totally there to help you and he's very knowledgeable about everything. The work isn't that hard at all and he doesn't give alot of it. Mostly readings - which are very easy. The textbook is a must. Exams are pretty straight forward also. He's very cool and I highly recommend him.
Good teacher, made you think about things in a differant way. Had an opinion but allowed you to have your own opinion. Really opened my eyes to poetry. Would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat.
He really made the summer session go by quicker. I agree w/ the previous post. Prof Keel definitely opened my eyes to poetry. I used to hate poetry but now I kinda like it. I like studying the shorts stories also. Overall, I'd take him again.
As a creative writer, Keel gave me a place to channel my creative side without having to worry about being judged with harshness. The class is engaging, fun, and educational! I'll be taking his Lit. class in the spring and I highly recommend him to all you students whose Eng. professors in the past had been a letdown! Keel won't disappoint you.
I loved his creative writing class, it was fun, and he was very entertaining. I learned a lot about writing, and think I have approved too. He doesn't judge you, and always has something insightful to say. I look forward to taking more of his english classes because he's an awesome guy!
Decent teacher. Took him for english 125 "the film", and had never gotten anything less than an "a" on an essay, or an english class, for that matter, prior to taking him. His class is pretty interesting, but don't expect an easy A.
Prof. Keel is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He doesn't use the textbook except for material for tests. When introducing a movie he talks about stuff that has nothing to do with the movie we're about to watch and he's lazy. He's cancelled class at least three times just to grade papers. This is completely unacceptable for a college prof.
hes nice
I took the summer class. Hes a very nice and sometimes sarcastic guy. Kinda like larry the cable guy is teaching us, hehe. But he is very knowledgeable. He is not easy though. He talks a lot about his wife and stepchildren and his dogs often when english should be taught. At the same time he does grade like a real strict teacher.
I took him for English 125, the film class AND IT IS THE MOST BORING CLASS EVER! unless your into really old movies and hearing him blabber about nonsense, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He never responds to any emails either. I would not recommend his film class.
LOVE HIM!!! He has made me decide to be an English major. His essay prompts are a bit difficult but he pushes you and will improve your writing! I recomend his class if you enjoy writing and want to improve.
I've always recieved A's on all of my papers in english, it's my favorite subject. This teacher almost ruined my love for english. He criticized all of my papers. I rarely even got a B on them, mostly C's or High D's..and THEN he accuses me of plagerism. WOW. Ridiculous. His essays are so hard to even comprehend what to write about. HATE HIM.
He is a great teacher! He is incredibly intelligent, and makes you want to go to his class. There are quite a few writing assignments in his class, but they are interesting. He gives grades that are fair. He has been my favorite teacher at this college.
He's a nice teacher. Can get boring sometimes. Not such a hard grader. He requires 4 essays and a final. But over all, it is an easy class.
He is very smart and gives a fair workload. He often goes off topic and found his class a drag to go to because it felt like a big waste of time.
He's a cool teacher, sometimes funny, but he can ramble on for years and go off topic, he does talk alot, sometimes its annoying but yeah, hez funny
His workload and grading is fair. The topics of the essays are interesting, however it takes him forever to grade them.It was difficult working on 2nd and 3rd essay if students are not aware of mistakes done on the previous ones.
He does talk to much - he goes off topic - and he's not very clear on his homework assignments. Tried to work with him but just couldn't.
Awesome film class with a hilarious film teacher. He is very intelligent when it comes to film- you can tell he's one of those 'film nerds/buffs' so hearing what he has to say about movies, directors, actors etc. is very insightful
If it weren't for the fact that i thought the one day i didn't show up he would take attendance i would have only gone when essays were due. 2 hours of class wasted by him just rambling on about who knows what. i got an A with not much effort. only assignments are like 5 essays so you have to do well on them to pass. pretty easy
recommend this teacher to people who want to improve their english skills. he is very funny but if you don't like to hear F word all the time, don't take him. also, he is super intelligent and graduated from USC althogh he doesn't look like it. you won't fail this class, but you will get mad trying to get an A. getting A: NEAR IMPOSSIBLE
Took summer class. 2 short essays and daily reading responses. Class split into 3 parts: short stories, poems, and plays. Keel was insightful, being a poet in work himself. Sometimes he rambles on and on and it gets annoying. During 2 movies we watched, he provided background commentary throughout! I was gonna scream! Late on grading papers too.
One of those teachers that students will either really like or not like at all. Showing up for classes are e a big waste of times since he goes off topic A LOT! He's very opinionated and doesn't use professional language in class. grading system hard to understand. made me hate english. don't recommend at all!
Not an easy teacher.I've made lots of appointments with tutors but I still received bad grade on essays.
I've taken him for two english classes. Great teacher. He makes you think and apply your thinking to your paper. Bad reviews on here are just from people mad they had to do something and didn't get to slide by with being lazy. He will call you on your crap in your writing.
Didn't like his commentary during movies, or him teaching his opinions. I did like the academic challenge. Grades papers thoroughly, but it does take a lot of time to get it back. Overall, do not recommend.
He talks A LOT and tends to go off topic. But the things he saids are interesting and funny. Sometimes he tries way too hard to be sarcastic. Grading wise, he's fair. If you just want an easy A, then you probably shouldn't take his class. But if you want something that will make you think and actually use your brain, then take his class.
Disregard the negative comments about Keel. Especially the ones that are poorly written. In some way writing is involved in all professions. Therefore you're going to need to know how to do it correctly. Judging by the run-on sentences, fragments, and flat-out piss poor writing, it's no mystery why these students fail. Learn to write morons.
He talks. A lot. No exaggeration, you might spend only 20-30 minutes in class actually learning something and the rest of the time he is talking about random crap. He is a good teacher though when he does it. The essays aren't that bad compared to other classes, as long as you put the time into it.
Keel was all over the place, He never stayed on topic. Shows up to class dazed and confused. He is always scattered mentally. Talks throughout the whole class time and does not call on anyone. NO ONE eles is allowed to talk or ask questions during class. He returned my papers months later hindering improvement, as he does with all his classes.
I wish no ill will towards Keel. But students deserve to know what kind of instructions one might get from Keel especially now that higher ed cost an arm & a leg .He's a mess.Appearing like genius but ranting like a skitzo. "A Beauitful Mind" Seen it? Thats him.U end up not knowing what he expects or wants from your work. He is on somekind of meds.
I love Prof. Keel! He is an amazing English instructor who is knowledgeable and very open-minded about the students' opinions. He made "American Literature: Part II" more discussion-based than lecture-based, which was very appropriate and helpful for a 200-level course. He is also very helpful in his officer hours. You'll learn a lot in his class.
Dr. Keel is an amazing teacher! A little unorthadox because he makes you think and allows you freedom in your writing! I can't wait to take another of his classes. He will make you a better writer for sure! He won't hand you an easy A but he will give you all the tools you'll need to earn one!
He talks a lot, and most of the time I didn't want to show up to class, but I did for the most part and did okay on reading responses & did very poorly on the quizzes since I never studied. I managed to get a B in the class though, which surprised me. Anyway, I probably wouldn't take his class if I were an English major.
It is true that he talks ALOT! He is very opinionated even when he shouldn't be. He goes off topic very often especially to talk about himself. He is very honest, very conceited, and a tad bit secist. If you don't mind putting up with that and nodding along with whatever he says and writting the essays catering to his beliefs, you'll be fine.
Do not take his class. It's not because how he grades your essay. It's because he's a teacher but he doesn't teach. Doesn't teach you the MLA format. By the end, I don't feel like I learned a lot from him.
Keel is my favorite teacher. I had him for Creative Writing twice and received an A both times. He's helpful, insightful, interesting and truly helps you improve your writing. He does talk A LOT but, nonetheless, he's a very great professor. He has seriously helped me significantly with my writing and I appreciate his class immensely.
Mr. Keel is an awesome professor! He really does talk a lot but the things he says does have relevance to what he's teaching. Not an easy A. He will definitely challenge you but that's what makes it so interesting. Take him!
He's a really cool and funny professor! He teaches really well and his little notes on your essays will definitely help you improve your writing.
Definitely a good teacher. He does ramble off subject often but it's usually interesting or funny at least and he manages to relate it all back to the topic most the time. His feedback on essays can be a little blunt but don't take it personally. He is happy to read your drafts and will give you suggestions to improve your grade. Cool beard too!
He's definitely a rambler often stuff that didn't even matter to the class. He was kind of unclear about the assignments. And never really gives any hint of what your grade is. Just check marks and plus marks. He's an alright teacher. If you just need filler units this wouldn't be a terrible class to take.
Took him over the summer. He likes to rant and go off topic, but he knows it and always tries to fix himself. He grades fairly but he focuses more on the logic of the paper instead of how you write. 2 scantron tests, 2 in-class essays, and 3 papers. Not as hard as you would think. His prompts are very open-ended.
one mid term, one final, and 2 essays. that is it. 2 pop quizzes total, (he will remove the lowest of all the pop quiz.) about 10 weekly writing responses, that we have write on papers we read, but we don't know how well our responses to those stories are until the last week, so we cant improve them. Very Lazy, and makes no sense for an eng class
He is really in to the field, teaching. I like his class for the fact that he opens your mind and see things in a different perspective. It was a great experience in my life. He is great and inspirational.i will take his class when I get a chance.
THE WORST. You never know what to take notes on because his lectures consist of talking nonstop about various tangential thoughts. I've never received a response to any emails I have sent him. He slacks on grading and returning papers and other written assignments. He is not helpful nor clear about what he expects from you, and yet grades harshly.
Not a great teacher. Sure he has his Phd, but that doesn't mean he needs to teach. His lectures are way too long, consisting of him talking about nothing related to the reading. He never goes over anything, then will label you a plagiarist if you use other places to get your ideas.
He talks way too much and doesn't focus on anything related to the material. He doesn't go over format for papers. He doesn't go over anything related to the essays. You kind of have to teach yourself.
I never learned anything from this class. He is a tough grader maybe too harsh for his own good. I think maybe he went over like two stories all semester. And he talks a lot and definitely not about the reading. He offers freedom in the writing, but grades harshly. Cool beard tho!
Lectures are boring, he does blab on about completely different things. At this point in English, you are expected to know what to do on your own, so do it. There is a lot of reading so you will have to respond to texts. It is unbearable to sit through his lectures, but if you do what is expected, you should be fine. Don't undermine the class.
He's a cool guy, knows a lot about different kinds of things. It can be difficult for someone in this point in their education to relate what he's saying to the reading. Class was unorganized. Lesson totally unorganized. We are supposed to do things on our own at this point, but it's HARD without proper direction.
A lot of reading, you will have to write responses of what you read. The class is very easy if you do that. The rest is very long boring lectures and a couple of essays. There is pop quizzes and tests are everything that is assigned in the readings. Instructions are on the syllabus, everything else is talk.
I never had a professor who talked so much about nothing. Easy if you do the material, but can be hard because he doesn't go over much of the reading. If you do it on your own you're good. Nice guy though.
He does lecture a lot, but his words are very valuable. One of my favorite professors.
Impossible to get an A unless he loves your writing. At the same time everyone should get a B unless theyre brain dead. He gives good credit(80-91%) as long as you did the work but hard to blow him away. Always rambles off topic and because of this barely learned anything. Take him if youre just looking for that 80% pass. U will not get an A. TRUST
Take his courses at your own discretion. His classes are really lecture heavy, but often gets sidetracked trying to explain himself. He's disgustingly liberally-biased too, and most of his arguments suffer from the same fallacies he teaches. If you don't want to end up as a cynic, please stay away from this professor.
Okay teacher. Very boring, talks about nothing more than any other teacher I've had. It can be hard to get an A in his class, but I wrote C papers the day before they were due because I was very time-crunched, and he ultimately gave me an A in his class. Good if you want an easy B. Lastly, he doesn't care whether you pay attention or not.
He rambles a lot, uses stories to "connect" to whatever topic he's talking about. Easy A. We read short stories with summaries 1x a week. Rent your textbook, don't buy it. We don't use it in class. Honestly just read in library or Google stories in pdf form. If you can get past the rambling you will do fine. Papers graded harder.
I feel like I never learned anything. Class was mainly based on readings assigned, in which he rambles on about stories then connects it with other stories/ movies. Never really taught anything aside story telling, which personally made it unmotivating to sit in class.
This class was an easy A with little homework, but he grades it all at the end so you never know what your grade is like or if he has any feedback for you essays. His class is so boring, hard to get yourself to go. All of his lectures are random and not on topic of what youre learning. The class is so long for random information you dont need
the comment below where someone said hes disgustingly liberally biased Is so true. There are times when he said things that personally offended me. Im pretty sure hes not TRYING to offend anybody but he needs to be more careful and mindful when sharing his opinions.. its just not appropriate especially if you are a professor teaching a class
If you want to become a creative writer, dont take him. Hes not good. He some good advice, but he drags on way too much. And hes always late. He doesnt grade half the stuff. He cancelled class multiple times, and one time we had no email with it. One on one, he is a cool guy, who is passionate abt writing. Other than that, dont waste your time.
Prof. Keel is cool as a person but as an instructor, not so much. He is unorganized and tends to talk about random things so much it's like I'm not learning anything English-related at all. If you want to take an English class, I wouldn't recommend this professor.
This class was online because of the corona virus but during zoom lectures even if you went on pause for a couple seconds he would assume you aren't listening. Very tough grader and has no room for mistakes. I thought this was going to be a speech class for beginners but I feel like I was taking a harder class than I signed up for.
Took ENGL105 & ENGL222 with him. WORST english professor I've ever taken, and I'm an english major. Super unorganized, boring lectures, lots of reading, no elaboration or discussions about said readings, just him talking non-stop about random things and going on tangents for most of the class. He's a great person & good writer, but sucks as a prof
Hes really funny and great to have as a teacher. Hes not hard , just listen. He gives great resources and pretty much give you the answers as long as you read what he gives you. Participate and youll pass the class ! Overall hes available when you need help and helps with most writing !
Okay so I almost did not take his class because of the comments on here, but I had no other option so I took him and I knew it was going to be a challenge. He is a tough grade, BUT he is fair if you care. If you are looking for an easy A, you wont get it you have to work hard for your grade. He will help you and you can get an A if you work hard!
This man does not stay on topic, he goes into random speech that is divisive and careless. He is a closet racist that tries to hide behind his Hispanic wife as to why thats not true. He talks the whole 2 hrs about random stuff and does not give breaks. If you want to learn something and not be offended and bored all semester do not take him!
This man cannot stay on topic to save his life. I literally treated his class like study hall and worked on assignments for other classes while he droned on. He also makes us buy a textbook when he doesnt even use it. I wasted money that couldve been used for other classes or whatnot!!!
Talks a lot about random stuff. What I will not forget is how he bullied me for two class periods to prove the point of him seeing my poetry as even if unintentional dirty minded. The whole class laughed at me. I had GAD and MDD and it triggered me to have to be in a class where I felt targeted.
He grades everything super last minute. So you won't know what grade you got all semester until it's almost over
He does lecture and ramble a lot, but he likes it when students try to participate and engage with the topics he talks about. Grades late at times. Also has a bit of humor, he is not a mean person but honest. Gave us a chance to redo one of our essays for a better grade, which was nice
I took American Lit Since 1865 with Prof Keel and really enjoyed it! The format was predictable, with weekly readings and reading responses, discussions of our readings in which participation was encouraged (we had a little bit of trouble getting everyone participating over Zoom), and 2 papers. Definitely grew in his class!
Hes funny, doesnt give much homework, and I love his class; its the only one i look forward to in the week. Great professor.
1. He talks a lot of things (some not even in the lecture), and that's why you easily get distracted. 2. Tough grader, but doesn't give helpful advice. 3. Never answer his email so the only way to contact him is in class. It's annoying, to be honest. So if you want to challenge yourself, take this class.
Professor Keel was beyond rude and condescending. His lectures were boring and go off topic, specifically about his failed writing career. Instead of giving constructive criticism, he enjoys to leave childish and condescending comments on assignments. He also enjoys unnecessarily using racial slurs for "educational purposes."
0/10 save your time
He cares about students and can be funny at times. Lectures felt long and shift in and out of focus to help you brainstorm for the 5 essays which will be most of your grade. Prompts are clear and essay feedback is reasonable, but grading is pretty slow. Start writing/researching EARLY, you can also resubmit one essay to try for a higher grade.
Don't take English 125, "The Film," with this professor because this class wastes time. You are only graded by 2 essays (3 for honors), an auteur essay, and a final exam. His essay guidelines are unclear, and even trying to go to his office hours to clarify things was useless. He never responds to his emails and always forgets to post on Canvas.
Do not waste your time. I took his class last semester, and let me tell you, he is not a good professor. You will not learn anything he teaches you; his organization is whacky and unclear. It's really hard, and if you are looking to improve and learn in critical thinking and reasoning classes, take a different professor. You have been warned.
Grades very very slow, but does not do any other assignments, only 4 essays. Prepare to never talk about anything English related, many of us are often bored, but he'll like you if you talk alot. He often goes out of subject, and tells his own stories to think he's teaching up about "life". Half the class dropped, but workload is light.
Literally do not recommend taking this class at all. He gives 4 essays and that's literally the only work we get. Not once did we actually talking about the subject we pay for and he talks and talks about the most random stuff and loves saying random slurs. I spent the entire class doing hw for other classes. 0/10 don't take this class.
Do not waste your time. He gives unclear instructions to essays and is always going off topic. You will do four essays the whole semester and will give discouraging feedback that will not make sense. He also has problem with discussing about African American people and likes to use them as an example when discussing about the problems in the world
Your time is precious, do not take this class.. He only grades you for 4 essays but his rubrics are non-existent and the "lectures" NEVER talk about assignments or readings. No structure to the class, no clear objective, I felt like a confused vagabond in that class. I dropped it because my time on Earth is worth more than this, and so is yours.
I usually don't care to write reviews at all but I got into a pretty awful car accident this semester and he was the only person who had the chutzpah to be rude to me about my attendance lol. I literally emergency withdrew from all of my classes after my conversation with him because I just felt so discouraged. That's just my experience though. :P
Take this class if you want to hear a professor talk about his life story for 2 hours straight for every class.
Rambles are often very negative and condescending. Never related to the class, usually involve his "life story" or politics (steer clear if you'd rather avoid that). 75% had dropped by week 3. No rubrics, little to no guidance, 4 essays for the semester, grading is nonexistent at 4 weeks left. Didn't show up multiple times. Only emailed once.
