he's very helpful esp if you go to his office hours before tests. his note structure is very easy to understand. does lots of examples. make sure you do the hw, even though it's not mandatory. definitely do the practice tests he gives you - similar ones are on the tests! overall: great prof!
HE SUCKS.
Professor Marx is very warm and approachable for questions. His office hours are very helpful and should help you do well on the exams. I would recommend taking him.
Marx is a living textbook. His ability to convey information is extremely limited. Take him if you are a great independent learner. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Expect his exams to be as difficult as possible.
he knows his stuff, clear, good notes. i made a mistake of never doing the homework since he doesn't collect. big mistake, because his tests are VERY HARD!!!
Dude, hes hard. Midterms and finals nothing like practice. He also assigns homework thats not in the text book so if you do tkae him, you have to go to class to get the papers with the problems. The one class the one class you miss will be the one where he passes them out.
The material is hard, but he is doing a really good job. He uses 1st half of the class time in the theroems and proof for those who really like math; and uses the 2nd half for examples for those who just want to learn how to do linear algebra(like me). Study the pratice MTs and don't fall asleep!
Very Good Professor. Very Clear. Tests are easy. Lectures on chalkboard.
He goes through material really fast, which makes it hard. Save the homework problems for the week before the test, as long as you do them. Tests are very long, unless you know it like he does you will not have extra time. Good, clear lecturer, nice in OH.
A pretty cheerful guy but the class was very hard. Stopped going to lectures halfway through the quarter because I couldn't understand what he was teaching. Tests were very tough too.
class was way to hard. He was an allright teacher but he moved through the material way to fast.
Really good prof, knows how to teach material. practice tests were very similar to the real tests.
The cutest man alive! He's perhaps the best teacher I've had here at Davis. He's clear during lecture and provides many examples. Although his tests are a bit difficult, they are VERY similar to the practice tests, so just study those! I'm going to miss his goofy smile everyday...
Marx is the best math teacher! He is very helpful and approachable in office hours! He gives lots of examples in class. Even though he doesn't collect hw, do them! His practice exams are similar to the actual test, so study those well!
GREAT LECTURER! I love the way he teaches. It's really clear and understandable. His tests are kind of hard though and he takes off points for everything, but he's a really good teacher and I learned a lot from his class.

Good teacher. Explains things well. Tests are fair.
He's a great lecturer, and I love that he smiles every second. He's really helpful during office hours, and even asks you how things are going, etc. Tests are really hard though, so study.
Tests are very difficult.
so hard..but i like the smile always on his face!~study guys..great teacher, take him if u like math, or u are smart!!!
Who would've thought math could make someone so happy? Easily the best math teacher i've had at davis. He is very clear and organized, does a good job at interpreting the book (as opposed to all the other math teachers who copy the book onto the blackboard). The class is not meant to be easy, so study, his tests are fair.
Great teacher. Really well organized, gives good examples. Good structure of lecture. And definately always happy!
He's the best Math teacher so far. He's like a walking math book, he does not need notes when lecturing, he just grabs it out of his brain. It's a hard class, so study a lot. My only complaint is, I am not sure what his grading criterias are, seems like a harsh grader. Tests are straightforward, but do study (test will make sense if u study) :)
very VERY good professor! he's clear and consice. if you have questions, he will answer them. while the tests and quizzes are hard, it's definetly fair since he gives plenty of examples in lecture and is quite clear in explaining concepts. i would definetly take him again if i had the chance!
Best math teacher I've had! He's unbelieveably nice in class and in office hours. You can tell that he really enjoys math and teaching. He really knows his stuff. The class itself is quite hard esp at the end with all the theorems, but he tries to make it as clear as possible.
Best math prof. I've had at UCD. Very enthusiastic about math and helpful in OH. He presents difficult material very clearly and always smiling. I highly recommend this professor since I've heard that 21D was the hardest class but I still ended up doing real good and did not change my mind about considering a math minor.
Great professor. He's very organized and does a great job teaching by providing plenty of examples. His practice midterm is very helpful because it is almost like the actual midterm!
A nice guy, but that doesn't help me get A's. Not only does he talk very fast, he also explains problems with his back turned to you; speaking to the blackboard. For some reason he also finds it important to spend 80% of the class talking about properties and no actually problems. Unless you're a math genius stay away.
i love Dr. Marx!! he is super nice and patient, and he is really helpful in his office hours. He explains things very clearly. Always have a big smile on his face. Although he is quite hard, i still think that he is the best math professor ever!! take him, but you guys have to study in his class...LOL
He's kinda weird... like out of an 80's film...he's pretty cool though. the trys to explain as much as possible. most of the test questions are taken from homework and class problems. as long as u do ur homework, u'll definitely get an A

He goes through lecture pretty fast, but only bc he wouldn't be able to give us all the material if he went slower! Very meticulous lecture notes. Definitely stop by his office hour! practive midterms were great help! Hands out answers to some hw and midterm review sheets. Great attitude towards teaching. No hw is due, doesn't mean don't do it tho!
He goes really fast in class. But if you don't understand anything, he will try his best to make you understand. He is very patient and always have a big smile on his face. ^o^ He does not collect homework, but it could make it more difficult because if you don't do it, you'll fail in his tests so easily...
Goes through lectures very quick. Very helpful in class and tries his best to answer your questions. He is always smiling, and homework is not collected which is kind of a downfall because if you don't do the homework, the tests are more difficult. Overall a good teacher.
sooo freaking hard!!! don't take him if you can! look, he is really nice and he's very "cheerful" but he lectures very fast. you'll be writing down the previous example and he'll be asking if there's any questions about an example he's already just done. you'll always be one example behind. -_-
His teaching style is great and explains math really well. But his tests are awfull! They are very very hard and usually the problems are not ones that you would find in the book so you cannot prepair for the tests by just working problems in the book. Tests are hard, but he does curve so that helps. He is very nice and willing to help.
His class was pretty easy but he does go through the lectures very fast. You must go to class otherwise you will fall behind. His tests and curves are fair. I suggest doing the practice exams because they are very similar to the real thing. Great and cheerful Professor!
The worst math teacher I have ever had. He talks to fast in lecture and gives hard tests. Even some of the math T.A.s couldn't figure out some of his problems when I asked them. The entire quarter was a struggle, aviod taking him if you can.
If I hadn't taken precal and calc in high school, I would not have passed this class. The lectures were confusing and unclear and a large amount of hmwk was assigned for a 3-unit class though it was never collected. I would not reccommend this prof.
He goes kind of fast, so if you miss a lecture, you will fall behind. His lectures are also fast, but if you have a question, he'll gladly answer. Always smiling :)
It's sometimes difficult to hear him during lecture and he does go pretty fast. The best way for you to keep up is ACTUALLY do the homework and not miss class. What he covers in class looks easy but the tests will shove reality into your face that you should have studied more.
Verry nice guy and he always smiles. He's clear when speaking and knows what he's talking about. The only problem I'm having with this class is that since he never makes the homework due, I wait until the test to do them. DON'T take him if you procrastinate with the homework because it will screw you over.
I am not a math person. However Marx clearly explained the material, although he went fast at times. As long as you do the homework and keep up witih the class you should be fine.
sounds really funny, teaches subject well, test are crazy!!!!! on his 3 midterms i got a B+, B-, B. Somehow I ended up with a C+ in the class, maybe I blew the final?
Marx is both crazy and unfair. His tests are ridiculously long with big ugly numbers.
Marx is a good teacher, but tests are hard. Lectures are fast paced and it is hard to keep up with him. He gives a lot of HW, and although he never collects it, you should do it. Very helpful in office hours. Not an easy A class.
hard tests
Sometimes cram too much stuff in lectures, but a very nice professor. The tests are a bit hard, but still fair.
hard teacher, so much material and it's all on the test. although he is a very nice guy and very approachable.
this guy is so awesome. yeah he's always smiling which is kinda freaky, but hes a really good teacher. i would always laugh in that class for no reason. all my kudos go to his daily office hours. i did so well in that class because i went to them very often and i did all the homework. hes really helpful, and hes always willing to help!
Lectures were clear, and he repeated thigns over and over while writing them on the board to drive them into ourhead. Always smiling and happy. Tests were difficult, but the subject inherinteley is. Good professor but doesn't explain why linear algerbra is important, or what its applications in real life are.
alright.. imma be real. he is real nice and i prolly will get a grade i deserve, which is prolly a C. but this guy is a good teacher. most of u will read comments and catch that. but u should all also know that his tests are hard! be prepared for E's and LN's if u're takin his 16b although it's not much of the hw, it's a big part of tests. good luk
This guy is the best math teacher at Davis. He explains everything with clarity and does plenty of examples to help with tests and hw. The tests are not difficult if you are able to do the review problems he hands out before each exam. 3 midterms, final, hw. Highly recommend taking him.
having professor marx was quite an experience... although he's a pretty clear lecturer, i made the mistake of not doing any hw and thus, failed his class from cramming before exams... always smiling and a kind professor but be sure to study WAY ahead of time and so the assigned homework.
terrible
I hate math and fell asleep a lot, but he's still a good lecturer. Practice exams are helpful, and the tests aren't too bad.
He is always smiling! Tests are hard, but if you do all the homework and the practice tests, you should be fine. He always makes sure that everyone's clear on the lecture examples before moving on. He is AWESOME!!!
Marx is a great teacher.he always stops and asks if anyone has questions and hes helpful at office hours.he is excited to be teaching math and is always smiling so it puts me in a good mood!definitely do the hw b/c it really helps and if you get behind it sucks and the tests are pretty hard also.but they are curved and overall i recommend this clas
I love this guy! He is such a cute little man! He's always CONSTANTLY smiling, no matter what! His lectures are really neat and organized. You should definitely not miss a lecture or homework assignment or you'll fall way behind! His midterms are a combo of the practice midterm and homework problems, so do both! He's really helpful during office ho
He is such an awesome teacher, and is constantly making sure that people in lecture understand what he is talking about. But do the practice tests and hw problems or else you are S.O.L. for the exams. Overall, just gotta do the work and you will be fine in the class.
you probably have never seen anyone more excited about what he teaches!!! he loves calc and he tries to encourage others to feel the same way! if uve never taken calc before its gonna be a struggle other wise its the CAKE!

He was really helpful and tries his hardest to make the material as clear as possible.
This man's smile is what we like to call his "default face". He is smiling no matter what! Great teacher, but the tests are insanely difficult for the amount of time you're given to work them out. Homework isn't required, which will more than likely be the downfall of quite a few people seeing as they won't do it unless it is due and won't learn.
PART 1: he is probably the best math/16b professor around. TRY to get him. if you go to lecture and take good notes (which isn't hard at all since he writes everything relevant on the board), you'll have something just awesome because it's so neat to study from. PLUS he makes handouts so that you can study from more material.
Hard class, but if you do everything he assigns you're going to be prepared for his exams. Lectures are very clear, everything written out for you to see. Lectures are sort of fast, but manageable. Provides you with previous midterms to help you succeed. Overall, one happy man. Excellent professor.
He's always smiling =) makes my 9o'clock mornings better! A really good teacher
Marx is a pretty good teacher but he goes WAY too fast and while he'll ask if you have questions, he'll explain it pretty quickly and want to move on. His tests are also too long. Homework doesn't count, but definitely stay on top of it. His review problems and practice midterms definitely help as well.
Go to class and practice the practice problem he assigns for tests. 1st midterm was pretty easy. last 3 were harder. everything he has on his practice problem sheet is on the actual test. really great guy and is an awesome math professor. Extremely enthusiastic and clear. Highly recommended.
marx is really helpful in his lectures. he gives a lot of examples when teaching and is eager to answer questions. little homework.
Marx is an incredibly good professor for those who have taken Calculus before because he really challenges the students. However, if you haven't taken Calculus before, I must warn you that it will be a lot of work, and you'll need to study well in advance for his exams. The upside is that any class you take after his will be a piece of cake.
I didn't take calculus in high school before. Stay on top of homework and go to OH when you need to. Marx is organized and provided plenty of examples (study these!). I didn't refer to the book unless needed to. And yes, he always smiles, but he's such a lovable professor. Honestly, would you rather have a professor who never smiles?
Marx seems to always have a smile on his face. He's friendly, explains things very clearly, neat notes. You must attend his lectures, unless you already know the material. Do the homework, it's helpful. Tests are average, not too hard, but some people don't do well. The class is curved, a few points maybe? Usually an average B is an A-.
tests are hard/challenging. lectures very helpful with lots of good examples. make sure ur awake and do not fall asleep by end of lecture. He always have a big smile. his practice/review problems for the tests are always similar to the ones he gives on the test. however, his graders grade pretty harsh, deduct alot of points. gives suggested hwk
go to class, his notes are long and boring, but study them, and study for tests because they are really hard
He is a very friendly outgoing teacher who always seems enthusiastic and excited. His lectures and notes are very neat and helpful. He always provides examples and always takes the time to explain them.
HEY! This is college baby! He is a great teacher. Go to all the classes! Study all your notes, hw, and practice tests and you should do fine. Average test grade is a C. HIS TESTS ARE HARD but with good reason he is trying to prepare you for further hard boring math classes! Assume everything will be on the tests!
Keeps you happy with his constant smile. Lectures are basically examples on the lecture material. Homework is not mandatory, but you'll get lost if you don't do them. Homework problems are vary from easy to hard. Might want to start on HW early to see what problems you might not get.
Dr. Marx is one of the best math teachers tat I have ever had, lecture is not manditory, but going is very helpful, his tests are far from easy, but if you get help and can do the review sheet, you will do fine regardless. My only complaint is that he isn't teaching 16a next quarter :(
Had never taken calculus before so everything seemed really confusing at first. But my advice would be to go to lecture, study off the lecture notes (didnt even use book notes), and dont fall behind! It becomes a huge temptation to not do the hw because its not due.. but try to get it done. Marx is a really nice guy and his notes are very useful.
He's a pretty good teacher. I took calculus last year in high school. The only thing I can't understand are the word problems and after taking his class I still don't. His notes are great! He goes over everything. Somethings are tedious. Overall, I got a C in the class. He's good if you try or already taken calculus before.
This is coming from a student who struggled the first three midterms but learned from my mistakes and came out with an A- in the class. Some helpful hints: do problems in his lectures forwards and backwards, up and down and also ALL/ONLY the homework problems related to the note material in class and you should get an A on all midterms + final
really happy guy. you can tell he loves his job. excellent lecturer, but his exams are tough. do the suggested HW and do NOT fall behind. first exam is always the easiest, so do not be fooled
DAMN THIS FOO IS AWESOME!! THE BEST TEACHER EVER LIVED AND WILL LIVE! AND A REALLY REALLY HAPPY MAN! KEEPS SMILING AND SMILING DURING CLASS AND OUT OF CLASS! ALWAYS SAYS HI NO MATTER WHAT AND GUESS WHAT WITH A SMILE!
Great Lecturer. Didnt even have to look at book except to do hw problems. Definitly do the hw and go to lectures!Happy guy. Gives 3 math test and a final so study and dont fall behind nad its as good as an A.
Lectures are very organized and easy to fallow. He does does problems in class that are exactly like the midterms and finals. His test are very reasonable. It is very helpful to go to class because his lecture covers the tests. He is very helpful during office hours. He is a very nice man and always eager to help.
Tests are HARD! And it's true - he takes off points for everything. I did so much work on the tests only to know that I only received 1 to 2 points out of 10 to 12 points on each problem just because I missed 1 step in computing my answers. Grading is so unfair. However, he is a wonderful teacher. Always have a smile on.
He's the type of teacher that you'd feel bad after failing, because you feel like you've let him down. Always happy and cheerful with a smile on his face. Very helpful and clear in lectures. His tests are simple and straighforward. Do the hw and you'll do fine on the tests. Once you get him, you'll find other math classes to be easy.
He teaches very well and is always happy. He speaks clearly and always asks if there are any questions. He provides handouts with extra problems, even numbered problem solutions, practice tests, and discussion problems. They help SO much!!!! He is very organized and approachable. He genuinely wants everybody to succeed and it shows.
A smiley guy for sure. Willing to be helpful but his lectures were too fast paced, and at times confusing when he made mistakes. It felt like quantity of material taught rather than quality. Do the HW problems suggested, doing them got me through the class. Nice guy but just terrible lectures. Exams ok, but takes pts off everything. STUDY!
Lectures are clear and understandable and always is smiling and happy. Yet, Tests are nit-picky and get points off for everything. Always left the test thinking I did well and was disappointed. Happy to get a B- because never gotten a C before. I wish I would have had a different professor. Homework not mandatory but wish it was because Ifellbehind
This class was fun and easy. Easy A if you try. I got a perfect on all the exams even though i missed a point or two because he gives extra credit problems. He's always perky.
GREAT PROFESSOR! always smiling and super geeky but its really cute. his tests are totally fair and he is realllly helpful. i totally recommend his class
Very nice, helpful obviously enjoys his job. Lectures are fairly straightforward, talks coherently and always answers questions. I thought the tests were tricky, though(3 exams, no quizzes). The exam problems don't necessarily cover material covered in class
He is a really nice and happy person, BUT his lectures are very fast paced. If you are a fast learner then youll enjoy, if youre like and and need to take in the info one step at a time, i would definitely recommend someone else.
Marx was an extremely fast-paced and demanding teacher. We had quizzes every discussion, leaving hardly any time for review. He definitely surpassed the required topics to be covered in this course. I'm sure that I learned twice as much as someone in 21B, and he covered at least half the topics described in the course description of 17C.
Fast paced lectures, tricky tests and quizzes, but if you go to office hours it is easy to see how above and beyond he goes for his students. He has a great attitude and will never turn down help if you need it.
Marx is always smiling and in a good mood, and more than welcome to help you. His lectures are fast paced but if you pay attention they are easy to understand. It best to do the homework, there isnt very much and it only takes about 30 minutes but some of the homework problems are word for word on the test. Tests were okay, final was hard.
Very good professor. His lectures are a little fast paced, but he uses a lot of examples. His tests are mostly like his practice tests, and some questions from the homework. I never did the homework and did okay in the class. He is very enthusiastic about math. I would take him again.
I've taken 5 math classes here and marx was the best professor that i've had. He is so enthusiastic about teaching and wants his students to do well. His tests aren't super easy, but if you study and do the homework they are definitely fair. The final was challenging, but he curves the class.
he was smiling, it was wierd at first, but once u get used to it u would want him to keep smiling. he is the best math teacher i have ever had, seriously. he explained everything clearly, and never got mad.... I don't think he can get mad, but yea take this class you will love it.
He's the best math instructor, he is very clear in lecture and the homework that is assigned are very helpful. I actually understand calculus thanks to Professor Marx. Exams are fair and they do come from the homework problems.
I've had 5 math classes so far and Marx has been the only teacher that I've liked. He actually TEACHES, not just copy off the textbook, and his explanations are even clearer than the book. He is very fast paced, covering on avg 1.5 chapters per lecture; you just have to keep up with the hw. He also smiles a lot. Think of it as a bonus.
this guy is cool, he smile's all the time. he teachers great the exams are fair. he curves each exam, AND at the end of the quarter, your highest midterm has the highest percent, the lowest on the lowest percent. take him.
A great professor!I could honestly say he was the best math professor I have had at UCD. Lectures are very helpful with examples that will help clarify any confusion. His exams can be challenging, but his curves are generous. I am so happy to have got into his class and it's important to go to lecture to pick up handouts. I'd definitely recommend.
Great professor. He explains concepts and how to do the work well. Exams can be tricky but if you prepare yourself ahead of time you'll be fine. How well you do on the practice midterms will be a good indication how well you do on the exam.
Great professor. He explains concepts and how to do the work well. Exams can be tricky but if you prepare yourself ahead of time you'll be fine. How well you do on the practice midterms will be a good indication how well you do on the exam.
Unbelievably clear. Always smiling and does numerous examples of every concept he teaches. Very, very difficult class, however. Expect TONS of functions with e and ln. Do the suggested homework.
He's a really good lecturer, tends to do a lot of sample problems for you during class so attendance is a must. His tests are reasonable but he puts a lot of problems on them so your more likely to miss problems due to time. He did let us have an extra 10 minutes at the beginning of every test.
i had him for 16b. really good. didnt had him for 16c but i went to his lecture because he knows how to teach. very clear. makes things really simple when its not. exams are very fair. my favorite professor so far. great guy, just puts a smile on your face =)
He's such a great teacher! His tests are VERY similar to the practice exams he gives us and he ALWAYS smiles!
The absolute best there is.
I love this man!! Lawrence is such a good teacher. He does plenty of examples during class, and his tests are very fair. He always gives answers to the tests after they are graded, and includes how to do the problem. Extremely helpful and resourceful. One of the best math classes I have ever taken. He never stops smiling! A total sweetheart!
This teacher is the BEST!!! He loves teaching and is so helpful. His smile always keeps me awake and i love going to his office hours, you can really get to know him and grow attached. his midterms are pretty hard but he is really helpful and will help you out with those great practice midterms he gives us. JUST LIKE THE MIDTERM! take him if you ca
Professor Marx was an amazing teacher. He has office hours every day of the week, he is very helpful, and always smiles. He puts hard questions on the review sheets for the tests, but if you go to office hours he will explain them and then the tests are very similar to the reviews. Very clear and he always answers any questions in class.
WONDERFUL teacher! He is great! He is always smiling :] A good way to start the day. His class is relatively easy, if you studied! He tests are based off of the homework problems and review sheet, so do the homework and study for the test! The final is extremely similar to the tests and review sheets so study those! Good Luck
Extremely clear and helpful professor! :) I had him for both 16B and 16C. Tests are not easy (definitely require a solid understanding of material presented in class and on the HW), but manageable. Very little curve (almost nonexistent), but if you do your HW, attend lecture, and ask questions, you should be fine. Highly recommended!
Always helpful, though oddly cheerful all of the time. He sort of reminded me of some mixture between Bullwinkle and Kermit the Frog. I hope I have him again, I liked his teaching style very much.
Sounds like Kermit the Frog =) Nice guy but his tests are very difficult, much more difficult than his practice exams. The curve was pretty decent, but don't expect anything better than a C if you don't go more in depth ...he doesnt collect homework (there is A LOT) but some of the trickier exam questions come from the assignments.
Enthusiastic professor, a bit like Willy Wonka. Very methodical; wants problems to be solved his way, but is thorough and willing to offer alternate explanations. Says "I think that's correct" instead of assuming he's right, which is interesting to see.
Dr. Marx is always cheerful... even at office hours. I have a lot of trouble in his class and he always responds to my emails fast -it's like he really cares, how unusual! I'm still having trouble understanding the class... but I think it's my fault, not his.
Prof. Marx is a great teacher. He is very clear on what he lectures and always asks if there are any questions and answers them well. He has office hours everyday which is really nice and is just an overall happy guy. His test are difficult and sometimes hard to finish in the time given, but they're definitely passable. Highly recommended!
I had Marx for MAT 12 and found him to be a great prof. He breaks down how to do problems really well. Some people may find his constant smiling a little creepy but I think it's kind of refreshing. His tests are easy so long as you're going to class and doing the hw.
The most cheerful guy ever. He smiles 95% of the time. A neutral expression is a rare occurrence. Explains very well and answers all questions. Tests are usually rushed for time but the curve is fair and nothing on them will surprise you.
Prof. Marx loves what he does and gives easy to understand explanations. He gives the opportunity to questions so if you do have a question don't be afraid to speak up and ask! Prof. Marx is always smiling and willing to help you if you need it (office hours all week). He has 3 midterms and a final. Make sure to review the practice exams he gives!
He moves very fast in lecture but knows what hes talking about. He gives practice tests that help a lot on actual tests. His tests are way too big for the time given, so the tests end up being a stressful race to the finish instead of a test of knowledge.
I naturally love calculus, so I enjoyed this course although it WAS challenging. Professor Marx taught the concepts very well, and if something wasn't clear, he would clarify it. He was (and still is) always smiling, so that made me happy; he never failed to be lively and enthusiastic. MAT 16C was easily my favorite class.
Highly recommended, but very difficult class for me. I'm not a math person but he helped me drastically. Highly recommended, and at this school, for 16A, you don't have much choice.
Such a great teacher! Always smiling!!! Very helpful. Almost all the problems for the midterms are on the practice tests he gives. Need to do the HW though to get by.
He is such a good teacher! If you go to office hours he remembers your name, and he is so helpful! His tests are also really straight forward, no surprises. Just do the homework and practice tests and things should go smoothly.
Hes a really nice guy but I found his tests extremely difficult even though I did the homework.
He is the most adorable old man you'll ever meet! He's always smiling! And he's a superb teacher. He is very clear and writes very clearly on the board. His lectures are VERY organized. His class is manageable- if you practice and review class notes, you CAN get an A.
He teaches pretty clearly, but he expects everyone to automatically know what he's talking about... there were many steps in his lectures that I completely didn't understand because he went over them so fast exepecting everyone to know what he was talking about. I did every homework assignment and studied for many, many hours before the first test
Marx is without a doubt the best math instructor I have ever had. His lectures are clear and he always stops and answers questions. Doing the homework and practice tests is extremely helpful. His tests are challenging, but fair. Plus, he's ALWAYS smiling and sounds like Kermit the Frog!
I have to thank this teacher for getting me into the classroom. He was able to get me back into the class and enrolled after 9 weeks! He is by far the best teacher and he gives 4 or more examples for like everything, he lets people ask questions after 10 mins of talking & hes a very personable person. I say he is the best after failing last quarter
Marx is a very good teacher. It is hard to come across a math teacher that is easy to understand, and truly teaches the class well, but Marx does it. His notes are relevant to class and his test questions are based off of notes and assigned homework problems. If you pay attention and study you should do very well in his class!
Overall, Marx is a pretty good lecturer..he goes a little fast but knows what he is teaching. Do the homework & do not get behind like I did.
okay i'll be honest I didn't pass the class, not because of him just because i suck at calculus. overall he is a great instructor. i just didnt take advantage of office hours etc. he is adorable too. always has a smile on his face. makes such a horrible subject seem much happier. overall i definitely recommend him.
Marx is an amazing teacher. Keep up with the homework, master that review sheet and you will do well in class. Great guy, will answer questions like no other. Take him!
Great Professor knows his stuff. Makes the classroom environment less tense especially since math can be stressful. Always smiling and very helpfull in office hours.
TERRIBLEEEE teacher. He failed SO many people. I, as well as may others are retaking the course. Everyone elses 16B classes were very much easier than his class. He may be pleasant but his tests are SOOO hard. NOT WORTH IT. TAKE WITH SOMEONE ELSE. I am an average student who studies a fair amount, trust me, not amount of studying will help!!!!!!!!!
The best Calc teacher I've had at Davis. Goes fast, but makes sure to stop and allow time for questions if anyone has any. Do all the suggested hw problems and the review sheets and you'll do well. If you don't the class will seem really hard. He is fantastic in office hours, always helpful and always known as the teacher that's always smiling.
He goes through lecture a bit too fast, so it's kind of difficult to keep up sometimes. However, he's a great teacher and his notes are quite helpful and clear. Test questions are similar to the review sheet and examples he goes over in class and are usually not more difficult. Don't bother doing book questions..he assigns A LOT.
Professor Marx is a great teacher with an everlasting smile. But he is one of the most difficult professors I have ever had. If you didn't take calculus in high school I would not recommend taking Marx. If you do decide to take Marx be ready for an extra challenge.
The smile on his face everyday hides the fact that he grades very harshly on his tests, because he picks out even the smallest mistakes. Aside from that though, he gives very generous curves to offset that. Also, he goes through lecture rapidly but often stops to make sure we fully understand the materials. A challenging but good teacher to have.
This professor is absolutely amazing. He may be a harsh grader, but he does teach well and is very helpful. He takes the time to pause during class to ask for any questions and he is willing to help during office hours. He is one of the best math professors I've had during the whole 16 series!
I've done very well in CAL16A/B but having Professor Marx for 16C was not enjoyable. I attended his office hours and everything; however, it was quite useless. He has his favorites obviously which i disliked. Totally messed up my grade/GPA because I ended up with a D.
Great teacher. Exams were hard, but the grading was very curved. Great smile and happy demeanor.
I'm not a math person at all but I really enjoyed 16C with this professor. He explained very well and took his time to make sure the students are ok. Do the practice problems and you will be fine. His exams are hard but doable - they are similar to his practice questions. I've learned a lot from his class and I am less intimidated by math now!
He is a great teacher, although moves pretty fast some times. He assigns homework but it is not mandatory, although highly recommended. the one draw back is that his test are incredibly hard, I did not finish the first midterm on time and lost a lot of points because i hadn't answered a couple of questions.
Had Marx for math 12 and 21c and I can say that he is a great teacher, he knows his stuff. 3 midterms 1 final. He gives out a practice exam before every midterm that is pretty much the same concepts/problems as the real test, idk why ppl are complaining they must not study at all. Hard to get an A but a B is achievable. Very helpful in office hrs
Go with an easier professor. My friends in other 21c classes all seemed to be doing fine. He goes way too fast and doesn't do enough practice problems. The problems on the test always had little "tricks", especially the convergence/divergence questions; never a single one that was straightforward. Found the class excruciating.
One of few best math teachers I've had. This guy will really challenge you. The class size was small compared to the other math classes so that itself kept the class competitive. Also, his curves suck. Either you know your stuff or you don't since his tests are really long. Getting an A in his class certainly proves mastery over math.
Nice guy, but doesn't know how to curve. He had us multiply our midterm scores by 1.05, so those who did well got boosted a lot and those who didn't got a tiny bump. Not a bad teacher, but has difficult tests. Got an A in both 21A and 21C but got a C- in his class. In the other 21B class the prof had the class avg=B-, Marx had our avg be a C-.
Took him for a freshman seminar and got a flavor of how he is. He does go through everything fast, teaches very well, but gives challenging problems. He really does test you to see if you truly understand the material. One of the best teachers at UCD but you'll have to work for that A. Many would agree. He's also very easy to talk to!
Two words to describe him: "Excellent Professor"!! Extremely organized and Love to attend to his lectures! Never fall asleep. Must take him, trust me:)
The tests were beyond hard. The guy is super nice though, wish he would at least have some notes with us if he's going to throw curve balls at us.
Very smiley, but no. His homework and practice tests are reasonable but are incomparable to his tests. Fortunately, he curves like crazy but it still seems impossible to pass his class. If you're an average student, you might be lucky enough to pass with a C-. Avoid taking his class if you are lazy and if you can't learn concepts quickly.
I really loved Prof. Marx! Always attend class and try to go to office hours if you are stuck on anything because he is always willing to answer questions and clarify. His tests are very hard, but the curves are awesome.... I may not get an A but I really learned the material- so I wouldn't pick an easier teacher if I could.
Great teacher. People said the tests were really hard, they were just memorizing proofs from class. I kind of didn't like that. I wish the tests were NEW proofs you had to do on the spot. Really testing your problem solving abilities. Class was awesome, lectures were really useful. ALWAYS SMILING.
Marx is a very sweet professor and he is always smiling! I didn't like his teaching method which consists of practice problems with little explanation. He always asked if anyone had questions, however.
Tests are hard, but personally one of the BEST professors. He's always smiling and very friendly.
ALWAYS SMILING! He's pretty awesome like that. Ask questions, it makes him even happier. Best calculus professor I've had.
Hands down, my favorite professor. He is always smiling, always happy to clarify, and always extremely helpful. I love this man. He makes math fun, seriously. I LOVE this man.
Always asks for questions and is smiling. Very clear and organized lectures. Very helpful at office hours and is willing to help. Discussions sections are prepared. TA grades hard. Tests are EXTREMELY hard, much harder than practice tests and homework. Homework is not mandatory but helpful. Tests are close to practice test, but harder. Good prof..
He is the best math instructor i have ever had! he explains very well and has practice exams the reflect very closely to his real exams... Go to lecture because there is a lot covered in this class. He always is smiling which makes it seem like he is enjoying what he is doing always answers questions and is very great i really recommend him.
Professor Marx is a great teacher. He's very clear on the material he teaches. His tests are predictable if you do all the hw and review sheets. Unlike many math profs, he gives a summery handout for each topics he goes over. Even if you have a bad day, go to his lectures and his smiles will brighten your day:D
he moves at a very fast pace, however he is a very clear teacher. the tests are extremely difficult and i felt like i was going to end up with a c, but i ended up with an a because of the curve. i would recommend if you are up for a challenge.
Definitely the best math professor I had but his tests were very difficult, not so much if you spend a week ahead studying, I always studied about 3 days before the test and ended up with a C+ in the class. If you are a very hard worker, you can definitely get a good grade in his class.
He smiles quite a bit! His tests are kind of hard as someone new to math, but he has very clear notes! Go to lecture because it's hard to catch up without learning what was in class.
Excellent professor. Very helpful, pretty generous with office hours but a little harsh with the grading. Most of the things on the midterms are covered either in the homework or the review and discussion sheets so it's very clear what's expected from you. Homework is not mandatory but highly recommended.
Professor Marx is very friendly, and detailed and concise with what he teaches. It was great learning with him.
Very nice man with a genuine interest in teaching calculus. Tests seemed hard but office hours were very helpful. Very good about answering questions.
Marx cares about his students and is always willing to help them. His is a very clear professor and makes the subject material easy to understand. His tests can be difficult, but he makes it very clear what is going to be on the test and what he expects from you.
Clear comments. If you like a teacher always laugh in front of you then he is the one. He gives HW problems that 90% students cannot solve it. And he gives HW for a day before the next class, so you have not enough tie to take help from TA. Supper hard in checking. If you an average student, don't take his math25 class.
Marx is a clear and great professor in class and I enjoyed him as a teacher even though his exams are pretty difficult. Don't expect high curves.
Went very fast in lectures, didn't really give many examples. Tests were very long and difficult, but curved. Test questions were copies of various proofs already shown, rather than new proofs that you had to reason through.
Very clear in lecture, but it's important to take notes and review them all the time. Tests were difficult, but curved. Overall, he's a good teacher but expects a lot from his students, so be prepared to study A LOT.
Good professor, his notes are clear and he does expect a lot from you. Tests are difficult with minimal curve.
Really energetic and enthusiastic dude but tests were pretty hard. I thought that having already taken Calc AB in high school it would be easy but it was still kind of tough
Dr. Marx is an extremely good math professor. He is always smiling. Don't hesitate to go to his office hours! He is very eager to help his students. However, his exams are really hard but his study sheets are pretty accurate toward what's covered on the tests. You will have to work really hard for an A but it's definitely possible.
the hardest teacher in my education life. Prof. marx and his TA make student crazy. do not take math 25 with him, if u r average student.
his back turned against the students the entire time he writes tiny scribbles on the blackboard and finishes 3 sections in one day... then he turns his back with a face-paralyzing smile and gives you a ton of hw to do in a confusing order... even if I was passionate about math I would still despise him.
Professor Marx is very clear in his lecture. However, if you don't go get the help when you're confuse, you're going to have a very hard time passing his exams. You really need to know the problems on his review to finish the exam. Exam are long and difficult. Once you're done with that problems, there is no going back. Work fast and accurately.
Best teacher I've had in any math course. However, his tests are hard. Most of the difficulty comes from the number of problems given under a specific time restriction. You must be prepared to answer questions accurately and quickly if you plan on acing the test. The HW and study guide are near replicas of his exams, study everything he posts!
He is really clear with his explanations and his tests are very much like his practice exams. Very enthusiastic and I would say if you get Marx you are in good hands.
He's an excellent teacher, but if you don't start off correctly you will never catch up. You MUST do the homework in order to succeed in this class. Although he gives both readings and problems to do, focus on the problems first. It will save you a lot of time and despair. I would gladly have him as a prof again; I recommend his classes.
One of the best professors I've had at UC Davis! Definitely recommend
He's very well organized and clear. Great professor!
Great teacher, but make sure you do the discussion sheets, as he tests on a lot of material not covered in the textbook. The discussion sheets should be your first priority when taking the class. He doesn't give out answers to them either so go to office hours to ask him for them. Tests are straightforward if you do both hw and discussion sheets.
Professor Marx is a great teacher. He moves fast during lectures so you must pay attention. There are also office hours which prove very helpful. His tests are difficult than most, so if you lack math skills don't take his class unless you are willing to work hard for it. Overall, I don't think I would of taken his class because its hard.
Very clear professor and helpful during office hours. However he's very hard and challenging on his tests and sometimes he doesn't explain confusing topics well in non-mathematical terms. Otherwise he's good!
Dr. marx is AWESOME! He definitely sparked my interest in calculus and although I will say his class is a little challenging, he prepares you for the challenge and so this class was a rewarding experience. my advice? do ALL the homework, discussion sheets and practice exams and you'll get that A!:)
By far one of the best math professors at UC Davis, and as cliche as this saying goes, it is true. Marx has a genuine passion to teach his students (with an unwavering smile every lecture) and is crystal-clear in his explanations. His notes during lecture are simple to understand, thorough, and covers examples so attending lecture is a must.
Marx is a great person, very intelligent. Unfortunately his TA's are often incompetent and he doesn't do a lot to remedy absolutely ridiculous grades given on tests. Super frustrating class
Marx is an amazing professor, lecturer, and person. He goes fast, but is always willing to stop and answer questions. The tests (three midterms and a final) were challenging, but not too bad if you did all of the homework. They also had extra credit problems. Marx also gives a pretty good curve. I would highly recommend taking him! He's great.
Professor Marx is hilarious. He's always got a smile on his face and really makes you feel special when you answer something correct. His "THATS RIGHT!" is like getting a gold star back in 1st grade. His tests are very reasonable but the grading was very harsh IMO. Lengthy but never really any surprises on the tests
He's a pretty good teacher. His exams are not that difficult but they are quite long. Also, he's kind of stingy with the points given on the exams. It's like you either get full credit or you get very little credit.
Be prepared to study a lot. I can honestly say I have not studied as much as I had to in this class. He only gives few HW problems on proofs that can be difficult. Tests cover in-class proofs. Test and class are curved. Only take this class if you are really good at math and enjoy proofs. Marx was amazing at teaching, prolly my best professor.
He is very clear and gives understandable notes. Also open for office hours that are really helpful as well. (A must-go! You get a lot of attention since not a lot of people go) Although the course material is hard, he is much more helpful than other math professors I've taken. Definitely recommended.
Professor Marx is a wonderful teacher and if you go to office hours he is very helpful.
Prof Marx was a good math teacher but the tests are very hard if not completely prepared. Make sure to go over all online study guides he has posted. No calculators allowed on tests. Tests given in 50 mins and hard to finish in time. Overall good teacher.
Always with a big smile!!!
Two words: "That's right!" (You'll get it if you take his class) Really great guy, I think he honestly likes to teach and has fun while doing it. His tests were horrible. I wouldn't have survived without his study guides. The class seems like it's going to be easy from the way he lectures, but it's not. Be careful not to fall behind...
Marx's enthusiasm for the calculus shows and this made having it at 8AM much more bearable. Although, I have never been exceptional at math, whenever I was struggling with the homework or concepts (which was often), he had a ton of office hours to help us out plus he lets you ask questions during class! Overall a great person and professor!
He is energetic and happy and lets you ask questions in class. However, the problems he goes over in class are much easier than the test. He does give study guides which are very similar to the actual tests.
generous curve
Fantastic professor
I have never been good at math and his lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand. Definitely do his practice exams since they are the same format as the midterms. Super happy and engaging. Definitely take him if you have the chance.
Marx is very passionate about Calculus, but his course is tough. 3 midterms and a final. He goes quick over the material, and his homework is optional. Very hard to get a good grade in the class. He posts study guides, but the tests are way harder than the study guides. Very hard to learn Calculus at the speed he teaches at. Would not recommend him
Tests were not easy but the curve is extremely generous. Nice guy but he moves pretty quickly through material. Homework isn't graded.
Don't take him if you don't want your GPA to drop. He's a harsh grader. He has favorites, so go to office hour.
Marx is an overall good professor. He obviously loves math based off his beaming smile as he says anything math related. His entire class consists of a billion examples and he goes relatively fast.. Tests aren't bad. Curve isn't bad. I got A's on the first two midterms and failed the last one. Ended up with a B+
best professor I have had at davis
Marx is a great professor. He is very clear, but teaches really fast. He skips steps or won't say it so you are left confused and figuring out yourself. Other than that, there is no homework, just do it though because it helps with midterms and the curve is really nice. You really learn a lot with everything he teaches.
Clear lecturer but go to class cuz notes not posted online if u skip. Has office hours like every day and always eager to help. Super nice old guy, always smiles. Take him if you can, best math teacher I've had here so far. Tests pretty good, just like practice ones but work fast cuz not much time given to finish them.
He's very nice and it's obvious that he really loves calculus. He is very enthusiastic and smiles a lot which makes getting through the lectures and material easier. Tests are relatively difficult but an A is definitely possible if you do the homework, study, and really know your stuff. Willing to help students & answer questions. Loved this class!
Best math professor I have ever had! His lectures are clear and driven by examples. He provides an abundance of resources such as practice tests and online problems. Timing for tests will seem short at first but his class really taught me HOW to study for math so it got easier. His office hours are extremely helpful and he is so easy to be around!
He's a little boring, but extremely organized and clear during lectures. Marx is the sweetest old man and gives fair, but long tests.
Bounces back and fourth in book instead of using a book in the order he wants to teach. The book isn't the greatest. Based on my experience I do not recommend. It's better to take the requirements before transferring
A great lecturer. While you are talking his class you have to write down all the stuff he writes on the board- those notes will be really helpful for the midterms and final test. He is very kind and gives attention to every question with a real passion. His tests are not easy but still if you will do homework and prepare well you'll do great.
Professor Marx taught the in a fast pace. There was one time that we covered almost 4 chapters in just the 1, 50-minute lecture. He always smile a lot and is always ready to help student with questions. I regret not always going to his office hours. Always do the homework assigned. Also the study guides are 90% identical to the 3 midterm and final.
He is a good teacher. One of the best in Math department. (Kouba is the best i think). His lecture is fast but clear. I'm okay with his lecture. However, the way he gives homework is not that good. He only provide odd problems' answer and only with a final answer. It's hard to understand some questions without procedure.
The guy's a great person. Just not a great teacher. He's a nice old guy with a great smile, but don't let that fool you. He spoke in math formulas so it was hard for many of us to understand him. I'll cut him some slack though since I hadn't taken any legit math classes for the past one and a half years.
He is very strict about math being done his way. It's his way or no way.
He is very helpful if you go to his office hours. He expects you to read the textbook. The tests, quizzes and hw's are difficult if you don't study. Most students who say he is a bad lecturer probably didn't even study.
Professor Marx is a great math teacher and always has a smile on his face. He teaches at a fast pace but is clear on what he's teaching. Go to class because the example problems he goes over in lecture are very similar to ones he gives on the exams. The homework and practice problems he gives are very helpful. Slight curve and grading was fair.
I took Lawrence Marx's classes due to his great reviews. However, I couldn't disagree more with them. He teaches incredibly fast. He even used one of our discussion sessions to teach more material. His tests are really long and difficult - he likes to give you problems that don't work out very well. Hardest class I've ever taken.
First thing's first, tests are hard. Like HARD. I saw the exams for other 21B classes and they were like nursery rhymes compared to Marx's. Midterm 1? Piece of cake, A+. Midterm 2? C(minus) ya later. D- for 3rd. He teaches fast. Office hours? Tutoring? I could barely keep up despite those. Well, he IS a nice guy. Genuinely nice. My GPA isn't tho.
Marx often goes over problems very quickly, but the plus side of that is that he gives you a lot of examples for each kind of problem. His homework is optional and very helpful. He provides test reviews online to practice with. The tests are very manageable if you study and do the homework.
Homework isn't collected or graded but he gives a lot of problems. He is a very happy professor, you can tell he LOVES math. The tests are challenging but with a generous curve. He doesn't have power points or podcasts so if you don't go to class you better get someone's notes.
Professor Marx is a pretty good teacher. He goes pretty quickly during lecture and cover A LOT of material, so don't skip class! His tests are not too hard, the questions are not that tricky, and are quite similar to examples he does in class. Go to office hours! He is very helpful and often gives back points on tests if you're a nice person :)
He is a good professor, but that is just it. His tests are SUPER TOUGH, and the time to complete them TOO SHORT. He is a harsh grader, and the TA's aren't of much help in that regard either. If you want to work your socks off, but don't get rewarded, then Professor Marx is your teacher!
Tests are hard. He curves a lot which is nice expect. Tests are long also so they are hard to finish in time. It seemed like everyone I knew in the class struggled. Take another professor if you can.
Marx is a great teacher who is always smiling and somehow makes math lectures bearable. He is very clear and gives tons of examples, and is always willing to answer questions. Class consists of three tests and a final, which can be tricky, but nothing unexpected or exceptionally hard. Also has a pretty nice curve. Overall, a really great math prof!
Very hard class as a freshman, but all Pre-Calc classes are tough in my opinion. Study guides somewhat prepare you for the exams,. Would recommend doing the hw though it's not required.
Marx is a total sweetheart and very approachable. Getting help is easy because he has office hours everyday BUT his exams are INSANELY difficult. The textbook problems are nothing compared to what we see on exams. You really have to stay on top of your game to do well in this course.
Probably the best 21B professor ever. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. Some people comments that his tests are difficult. I think thats nonsense. His tests are all from the homework problems. You will be fine if you do all the homework. Compare his tests with some other professors' tests, you will know whose test are truly DIFFICULT!
The class is always packed so come early for good seats to take good notes. Marx always has a smile on his face and is surely ENTHUSIATIC about math. The course contains 3 tests and 1 final. Be sure to review lecture notes and do all homework before tests as tests are similar to those resources. Come to office hours cuz he has it like EVERYDAY
Professor Marx was a great professor! For someone who hates calc, he was extremely helpful and understanding that not everyone is a calc genius. He had office hours every day for at least an hour which was awesome. He also super adorable and really nice!
Not as hard of a class as I thought. I could've done much better if I kept up with HW. Tests are very fair, not tricky at all, and very similar to practice tests. If you put in the effort, you'll do well. Marx is a super nice guy. Tons of office hours. Clear and well-structured lectures, goes kinda fast though. FAT curve. Highly recommend.
He's a great guy, but his class is super hard. He goes really fast and the tests are always way harder than I expect. He tries to help, if you go to office hours, but there are always a lot of people there. I am really struggling, and I breezed through AP Calculus last year.
He's always smiling, even at 8:00 am. His lectures always make sense, they're always very clear, he knows exactly what he's doing, and its always one big chalk talk. He never talks about anything else but math, always go go go and doesn't waste time. Only grades are tests, which are almost identical to the non-mandatory homework.
Exceptionally nice and great at teaching. But goes WAY too fast (due to 50 min lectures). HW isn't graded so it all comes down to 3 mid and final. 1st half of the test is straightforward questions (ie if you do HW you'll be fine) but 2nd half is the hardest questions you come across in HW. Overall, nice guy, incredibly difficult class to do well in
Very fair grader, gives partial credit on most problems. Tests are pretty difficult as are the almost-weekly quizzes in discussion. Be prepared to study the textbook several times through. I, as did many other students, didn't pay too much attention to lecture as he often goes over proofs that are not tested on or examples from the book.
Marx is like the grandpa from Meet the Robertson's expect really good at math. He's always smiling and he's really good at helping you individually in office hours (go to office hours). That doesn't mean that the class is easy. The tests are way harder than practice problems and you should really do the homework even though its not graded.
Dr. Marx was my favorite teacher by far this last quarter. He showed up to 8am lecture every morning with the biggest smile on his face. For every lecture he never once put down his chalk and was always writing examples even with only a minute left. The class was moderately difficult, but he was a great teacher and made the class worth while.
Compared to other professors, Marxs tests are HARD. Tests are harder than the practice exams and homework, to give you a hint on how hard it is, the average for his midterms, etc are 50% Hes a really good teacher but goes really fast and has really hard tests. His curve is nice though.
Keep up with the class, frequently review concepts, and ask questions when needed and you should be fine.
His tests are insanely hard. I did all the homework, all of the practice exams and studied an insane amount outside of class for his tests.
STRAIGHT UP, unless you took AP Calc AB/BC and passed with at least a 4, preferably a 5, I would avoid taking this class at all costs. Easily one of the hardest math teachers for 21B. Tests are pretty difficult, and the final is 8 page cumulative and many impossible problems unless you are a genius. Seems like a nice guy, but take someone else.
If you attend his lectures and discussions and you are regular with your homework, you should be able to score well in his class. He is very caring and knows how to teach well.
Test are difficult but you will be saved due to the curve.
This class was extremely helpful. He is a great lecturer and really knows his stuff. Yes, his test are long but the questions are fair and there is nothing that is surprising. He even offers a extra credit question so you have the potential to shield your grade on top of curving. Overall a great teacher and I wish he taught MAT 21C.
Marx goes very fast, so his teaching style may require getting used to, but he provides a lot of solid examples to work from. Definitely attend lecture because that is the only way to get so many practice problems. His tests are tough and he likes to add the occasional challenge. Take advantage of the math tutoring available on campus for help.
Speaks clearly, goes through material quickly. Come to class and pay attention. He was very nice at office hours. Tests were OK. Homework is not graded, but it helps.
Very friendly smiley person. Wants you to do well in the class and knows his stuff. Explains things in a very "mathy" way, so yes it does make sense, but it may be hard to follow in lecture as he goes fairly quickly. I ended up retaking this class with a different teacher and it was a ton easier. Homework is optional.
Dr. Marx is an amazing individual. He is truly passionate about what he teaches. The other reviews are correct, he is ALWAYS smiling and it makes the class seem more interesting. Tests are long but fair. He is a hard grader so be careful. He is super friendly in office hours and in class when asked questions.
Not very fun lectures. Won't pass if you don't do homework (they are optional)
His tests are long. The material covered on them is straight out of homework (optional), discussion sheets, and his "color" notes he posts on his website. Has a curve, only really helps people around the median (60-70) get a C to C+ in the class. Extra credit on every test. TONS of office hours. Super nice. DO THE HW AND DISC. SHEETS. GO TO OHs!
One of the best math professor!! 125A is definitely not an easy class, but taking it with Marx makes it less difficult. His lectures are wonderful, and notes are so clear that you do not need to read the book. His tests are not that difficult, but you have to focus on the details, and make sure understand all the proofs from the lecture.
Hands down the best lecturer I have came across at UCD. He explains everything precisely. The main thing to do for his class is to memorize every theorem and lemma in lecture (word by word). It is brutal but his tests and final were solely on the theorems discussed in class (very few applications)!
Fantastic lecturer who is very passionate about what he teaches. Homework is not mandatory, but is essential in order to succeed on the 3 midterms. His midterms are long and very difficult, but he offers an extra credit problem on each one. Decent curve. I got a 5 on Calc AB but could only get a B in this class even with a lot of effort.
Even for someone who already took AP Calculus BC and passed MAT21A relatively easily, 21B with Marx was pretty hard but not impossible. You'll need study for this class by doing the homework. He posts his exams from the previous quarter as practice which are really helpful. He has 3 midterms and a final which you'll need to rush through to finish.
Great, straightforward professor. Style of teaching is easy to follow. Answers questions in class. Good curve, optional homework (should be done regardless). Tests are based on homework, discussion sheets, and test prep material. Gives good amount of resources.
Really nice guy and a great lecturer but his tests are really long and difficult.
I took this fall quarter of my freshman year and it was difficult. I got a 5 on AP CALC BC but wasn't able to pull off an A. His exams were heavy on tedious integrals and did not focus much on concept. If you are able to do many difficult integrals in a short amount of time then this is the class for you. Regret not going any lectures.
Very organized, straightforward professor. He assigns A LOT of homework and he tries to cram in as much as possible into every lecture (which can get annoying) but otherwise his class is hard but doable. Expect to run out of time on every midterm/final LOL. But the curve is good because of the low averages.
Really nice prof, ALWAYS smiling :) Had taken AP Calculus AB, so was mostly review. Lectures were a little too fast & sometimes confusing, but he mostly did a pretty good job. As long as you do all the HW and Disc. problems, & you make sure you practice and understand them, you'll do great on the tests. Go to office hrs 4 help, he's available often
I had Marx for both 21B and 21C. Even though I only showed up to office hours once, he still recognizes me around town. He obviously cares about his students and their education. That being said, his tests really challenge your knowledge not just of the pertinent material, but also trigonometry and other basic mathematical concepts and tricks.
Took Marx for 21B and 21C. Out of other two ive had in 21 series, Marx was my favorite. He does so many examples in a 50 minute lecture it is incredible. Make sure to do homework to succeed in this class, since they mirror the exams. 3 midterms, 1 final. Discussion is optional ( I didnt think they helped). Great professor who ALWAYS has a smile.
Marx may be really good in higher level classes, but since 012 is remedial, he lectures way too quickly. Obviously, the 600+ students didn't pass the math placement exam for the math class required for their major. He could adjust his teaching method for this group of students for greater chances of success & understanding. Curve says it all :(
Marx is knows what he is talking about, but does not realize that we are one of the lowest math courses and so we need to take it a bit slower to understand the material. A lot of the homework he gives is based off reading the text book and so are a lot of problems from the tests
Marx is the cutest little old man I've ever met. He teaches a bit quick at first but you'll get the hang of the pace of his lectures. His homework is a bit on the heavy side but will definitely help to pass the midterms and finals. His reviews are very similar to his tests. As long as you keep up the work and go to lecture you should do fine.
Marx is sooooo cute and very passionate about Math when he gives his lectures he gets so excited that he tends to write fast but don't let that discourage you he's a total gem and leaves the notes up for several minute so u can catch up. The txtbk is only used for hw (which isn't mandatory) but u should do it if u plan on passing .
Professor Marx is literally the sweetest! You can really tell that he loves teaching math in his lectures. He goes really fast, and you may be a little lost and overwhelmed in the beginning, but you'll get the hang of it. He assigns a lot of problems to do and they're not mandatory, but you should do them because they help you study for tests!
Professor Marx is a great lecturer, but his exams are on the difficult side. He gives HW, but only some of it is due. He also gives 2-4 quizzes & 2 midterms. The curve is pretty nice. I got mostly Fs and Ds on everything except HW & still passed. I learned a lot from his class & purposely took MAT108 with him after taking him for MAT21B last fall.
Dr. Marx is always smiling. He assigns HW & reading that isn't due for a grade but is great practice for what will be on the exams. There are 3 midterms & a final. Lowest midterm is worth less than the other 2. Exams are on the difficult side but are doable. He also provides review exams. He does great examples during lecture as well.
Marx was a good professor but he moves very fast. Unfortunately, you can't see your grade at all so I didn't know what I had the whole quarter and ended up failing the class. There's lots of homework, but none of it is due. All that's graded are the three tests and final.
Marx is an awkward person but don't hold that against him LOL. His lectures are so-so but the tests are heavily based on them so study the notes and do practice problems. He doesn't use canvas and has optional HW.
Worst math prof. ever. He doesn't set up canvas(I believe he doesn't know how). Impossible to see at the back, even in the front rows cuz he uses white chalk to write. ( no powerpoint) Exams are extremely hard, impossible to finish. Talks super fast and confusing.
Marx subbed for my MAT25 (advanced calc) professor. From one lecture,he made a good impression. He spoke clearly and wrote neatly with detail in his notation. He covered a lot of material in a little amount of time and did so elegantly. I plan to look for other upper div math courses that he might teach.
Professor Marx explained material very well, and although he went a bit fast during lectures, I could understand everything. He also provides many practice problems, including homework, discussion sheets, and practice exams. His tests are fair; they're very similar to the practice tests he posts, and there's always a lot of extra credit available.
He is a great explainer. However, the pace that he goes at in class is faster than other professors. Do the homework, go for the lectures, and go for the discussions and you will be fine (you should get an A). But, if you decide to start slacking off and only go for the lectures you will probably pass with a C. (assuming you did Calc BC earlier)
Simply put, you must truly understand the material to do well in this class. His exams are lengthy and challenging, as he loves tricky problems. Luckily, his lectures are PACKED with helpful examples. Also, he provides review material that can definitely prepare you. Unfortunately (at least for me), his curves are more generous to those who fail...
Easy. Never attend lectures and discussions. Never learn anything 21b. Just do the hw and all questions he publish. An A is the award.
Dr Marx is a great guy and prof. Gives clear lectures, answers questions well, and very helpful in OH. Lectures on all the material doesn't skip much and his tests are VERY challenging but completely fair. 3 100 point midterms, 200 point final fairly generous curve. Work to get a B, Work really!! hard if you want an A
tough tough tough
Marx is a really nice guy, but as someone who learns better with examples and different interpretations of what concepts mean, this class was extremely hard. Lots of definitions straight from the textbook without much effort on his part to make it more understandable or applicable. Very computational class, I struggled with concepts throughout.
Only grades on 3 midterms and 1 final. The practice midterms are very similar to the actual tests. Definitely adjust to your learning style, he can go pretty quickly over topics and if you have a question have it ready when he asks for questions. It is hard to not like him because he is like a very loveable grandpa.
The actual test is very similar to the practice. The only thing you need to do is review the notes and do homework. Approximate 70-80% of test questions come from the examples which he mentioned in the classroom.
This was an extremely hard class, given the material is already hard to learn with a good professor, let alone Marx. He does try to teach but the second you walk in he already did 10 problems, he talks so fast that we don't get the time to understand the process, and his tests are too long.
Dr. Marx is a wonderful teacher and person! He's very kind, and really makes an effort to teach thoroughly, in a way that makes you feel like you're really learning. Clear lectures, and lots of OH in which he's very helpful. His tests weren't easy, but totally doable and a fair evaluation of what you learned. His class can be an easy B, earned A.
People rate Marx highly because hes nice; that said, his class is probably one of the more difficult 17B sections because of the difficulty of both his exams and the amount of optional material he jams in (about 1/3rd of discussion sections are spent on teaching new lecture material). Average for tests were 40-50s w/ a weird curve. Dont reccomend
Great professor. You don't have to attend lectures if you can teach urself. The test is just what the practice is. The test structure, format, and questions are almost identical. pro. Marx is friendly and caring. General speaking, the class is easy. And if you have any chance, plz take him.
Professor Marx has been one of my favorite professors at Davis. I just finished my first year and I took him for MAT12 Fall quarter. He explains things very well and always asks if everyone understands before moving onto the next concept. He always has a smile on his face, even when I had him at 8AM. He is a very cheerful man and a great professor.
Grade is 3 midterms and a final. Marx's class was the first class that made me feel like I was in college. It was incredibly demanding but with the effort put in an A is possible. Very kind in OH. Insanely fast paced lecturing with countless examples. Lots of additional chapters put in. Hard class but he provides everything you need to succeed.
Goes very fast but gives a lot of examples and is a very kind, cute old man. Do the homework and practice tests he posts and you will do well. Exams are very fair but quite difficult because they are long so you have to know the material to finish in time.
Overall, his class is manageable. He does go fast in lectures so I did have to go to office hours several times but he is super nice and not intimidating at all. Do the homework and study guides because tests are based on them. There's also a pretty big curve which I definitely appreciated.
great prof!!
