Does a good job of explaining the course material which is already interesting but can get dense at times. His tests get progressively harder after the first one but they are pretty fair. Just show up to lectures and review the slides/notes beforehand and you'll be fine.
Took for evolutionary psychology, and he was great at explaining the material and structuring the class with understanding. Greatly appreciated him.
Professor Reed is very passionate about what he does and really has his students' best interests at heart. He's really just a solid guy who loves what he does and that reflects itself through interesting/memorable lectures. The course is fair, lectures are fun with pop culture references, and he's just a caring, funny, quirky guy. Highly recommend.
Professor Reed is intelligent and caring. If you try hard, you will do well. You will also learn a lot. I highly recommend this class.
It's really apparent how aware he is of what it's like being a college-student. There's no surprises, he tries to be as clear about what is required as possible. You only have to study the lecture slides to succeed in the exams (there's 3 midterms and a final, all multiple choice). Good lectures. I learned a lot & the topics are interesting.
Best professor at NYU
Great professor! He's kind, funny, has good music taste, and is obsessed with How I Met Your Mother. Lots of lectures, tests are very straightforward and easy.
Excellent Prof in NYU!! The topics are really interesting and related to your everyday life. He said everyone should take it because it is going to help your life and I totally agree with it.
He's the best, wish I showed up to more lectures. Funny guy and I would definitely take another class of his in the future.
He's an absolute gem. He really wants you to learn and be able to apply what you learn in class to your everyday life. He's totally hilarious. He doesn't believe in cumulative tests, so it makes exams a lot less stressful. Everything you will ever need is provided in the lectures, you will never be led astray or tricked.
He's really an amazing guy and teacher. He's caring, considerate, and super funny. He understands what college students go through. Take him asap
Teaches interesting material that's applicable to real life and always makes lecture fun. 4 straight forward exams make up 80% of your grade. No midterm or final, but you're required to do 7 hours of research participation (which basically entails doing some surveys, small tasks, etc.) Overall, a fun easy A as long as you pay attention in class
Super engaging, creates a great learning atmosphere even online. super knowledgeable and a great guy.
Super cognizant about the difficulties of being a student, especially during the pandemic. Outstanding, inspirational lectures! Reed is an amazing professor that truly loves his work, and it shows. Grade is based off mostly exams, which are almost too easy as long as you pay attention to lecture (don't even need notes!).
God. nuff said
If you take his class seriously you will get an A, but more importantly you'll actually retain what he teaches because he cares about teaching the subject instead of just academically stratifying kids. He's passionate about psychology and it shows. Great professor, great classes, and most importantly a great guy. NYU needs to pay this man more.
So far the course was a breeze and it was mainly due to his exam style. While it covered the topics discussed with in the lecture and his notes, it was not cumulative, meaning that the Final Exam did not include information from the beginning chapters of the textbook. He was super funny and easy to get along with. Take him!
I never thought psy lectures could be this interesting.
Excellent professor! His exams are straight forward based on his lecture slides. Hes a really funny and caring guy and I am definitely taking another class taught by him.
Ian is the best professor I have had. He is truly passionate about psychology and loves talking about it. I had to fight to get into this class (bc the waitlist was 80+ people) but it was worth every drop of sweat. He is able to make lectures informative and also funny. He truly wants you to learn and really cares about you as a student. TAKE HIM!
i wish his class is in-person because he gives funny, amazing, and inspirational lectures for sure. As long as you watch all of the lectures, you are good to do the exams. It's def not that hard and the materials are interesting to learn too.
Final grade consists of 4 exams (non-cumulative, open note) and recitation assignments. Since it was online, I didn't even go to class, just took the exams with minimal studying. Honestly though you should go to lecturesthe few I went to were fun because of how funny and caring he is. Insanely understanding and easygoing.
As long as you review his ppt carefully and know where you can find all these concepts, you will get an A. Yet you can still learn a lot from his lecture. The best intro class ever. Broad topics that can help you find your major and interest.
Any class taken with Prof Reed is a great one. You won't regret it. I wish he taught all my classes. Also I hate mornings but I WILL get up at 9:30 am for this man. Lol.
This was my favorite class as a freshman at NYU. Prof Reed is amazing!! Take intro to psych with him as a psych major (it's great to take as an elective course too). The lectures were SOOO good! We learned quite a bit but also had fun. Recitations were not hectic which was great because other classes I had were hard. Take this class with him :)
One of the best professors I had in NYU. Well-taught class. Highly recommend.
The true goat! Wished he taught more courses in undergraduate.
The exam used to be open book so it was an easy course, but for this semester it is a closed book exam. There are in total 4 exams, 3 midterms, and 1 final. Although the exam is not cumulative, but there is too much information needed to remember, which for me is too heavy for an elective course. But Professor is good and nice and cool.
The tests are tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo difficult!!! Avoid this professor at all cost if you don't want to study 4 days stayed up late and got an B.
Ian's literally a gem at NYU; his lectures are very straightforward and his exams are exactly what's on his lecture slides. He takes out questions if everyone gets it wrong on the exam, which helps boost your grades. Each exam is non-cumulative, so this course was a breeze if you came to lectures & listened.
Ian's class is EXTREMELY difficult. Grade for the entire class is based on three exams (30% each) and an article summary (10%). He asks EXTREMELY specific questions and there aren't many questions on the exam, so there's a slim margin for error. Not very accessible outside of class. Class average is below a B- even with studying all night. Avoid
Reed used to be an excellent professor. However, he changed!Although his lecture is still attractive, and he is keen on interestingly explaining terms and research papers, it is way too hard to get good grades on exams. Exam questions are really tough and confusing. I felt like I was doing a word puzzle.Hope there can be a curve to boost our grades
Ian is one of the best professors I have had at NYU. He truly gets the struggles students face. The class is made up of 3 multiple choice exams (30% each) and an article summary (10%). Every single question on his exams comes directly from his lecture slides. He even highlights the information we should know in a different color. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
I wasn't a huge fan of the class. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but as a professor teaching potential clinical psychologists, I think that he taught the class a lot of his own (sometimes inappropriate) opinions as if they were objective facts. For the tests make sure you can memorize information but it's manageable.
This class is one of the most straightforward classes that I have taken this semester. All the exam content is straight out of the slides, and the professor highlights stuff that might be important for the exams. Also, the exam questions are all multiple choice.
Ian is one of the best professors at NYU. The exams are online but in person. He is extremely understanding and has let me reschedule exams due to family situations. He even highlights the material that is going to be in the test. Highly recommend!
Ian is one of the most interesting professors I've met. Lectures are detailed/contain a lot but are all easily translated into the exam material. Studying involves time but he also encourages you to listen rather than take notes so just pay attention in class and you should be fine. He isn't trying to trick you - he's on your side. Highly recommend
Ian is a good professor and his lectures are great. I have taken his other classes before and I always loved them. However, his tests are so much harder now as the questions are way too specific that you have to know not only the concepts but EVERY SINGLE WORD.
Like this class a lot so far. Lecture is funny and materials are interesting. Exams are straightforward, although sometimes challenging for me cuz it asks specific questions with sometimes vague wording. A more generous cut-off would be more fair in terms of grading as the exams are now in person & close-book. But Prof. Ian always deserves a 5.
Classes are lecture heavy but Ian's humor and personal anecdotes make it very enjoyable and memorable. There's three exams and a short paper, and there is a lot of memorizing but the exams are quite straightforward so I'd say it still is very fair and reasonable. Overall great class and highly rec!
Professor Reed is one of the best in the psychology department at NYU. Lectures are concise, easy to understand, and engaging. Exams are very lecture based and attendance is not mandatory so long as you pay extra attention to the slides.
Sex, evolution, and human behavior is definitely more difficult than abnormal psychology (he teaches both). I would give him a 5 for PSYCH-51 + in general but no slides were provided for PSYCH-300 & what made it even harder was the specificity of qs/answers. Abnormal psych is doable (all mcq) but don't take evolutionary psych if u want an A.
I loved Ian but it's also true that the text questions are hyper specific. One line on the slide can be on the test and you have to be prepared for that. e.g. xx is more common in women of x profession, T/F.
Great professor! His classes aren't too difficult as long as you put in effort. He repeats the same thing many times and answers any and all questions in class. You definitely would benefit more if you are actually in class live, though it's not required. He gives out his phone number so that students can reach out and get prompt responses.
As long as you attend class and pay attention, you'll do fine on the exams. I didn't have to memorize anything. Lectures are really entertaining and prof Reed is a refreshing departure from the echo chamber that NYU can feel like sometimes. Exams aren't too hard- again, all you have to do is attend lecture and pay attention. Would recommend!
The professor always attempts to exclude his opinions when answering questions. While the course is solely exams and a final assessment, all of the course slides are readily available in brightspace and the recorded lecturs as well. Exams don't have tricky wording or misleading questions. The objectives of the course are clear and achievable.
Professor was very passionate about the topics. Did not try to trick students at all on assignments, and made it clear what you would be tested on, making studying easier. A lot of stuff to remember but if you study you will do fine and there aren't other assignments taking up your time. Really interesting material too.
He is a very interesting and knowledgeable professor. The exams are not too difficult and are basically based on slides and what he has mentioned in lectures, so if you study hard and review, you will get a good grade in this class
His tests simply feel like assessments of memorization. If you're good at memorizing and efficient at test taking, this course will be a breeze and an easy A. If you're more about conceptual understanding, this class will be slightly difficult to get a high grade because it is more about specific information rather than the understanding of ideas.
For electives, I did not learn anything that makes me motivated . But now I know note taking means nothing if there are no class participation.
By far one of the best professors I have had. Professor Reed is so accessible, responds to questions/emails quickly even on weekends and is always willing to help and clarify doubts. Lectures are super fun, he is extremely funny and candid and a very good grader. I would definitely recommend taking this class!
Ian is solid in what he teaches us during his lectures through his experiences as a psychologist. As a psych major, I am glad I took Abnormal Psych. I got to learn more about the nuances of disorders, which is important to understand to accurately diagnose in the future. I am grateful for the effort he puts into this class. Thank you Ian.
I really enjoyed taking Ian's class. He's a great professor, provides clear expectations at the very beginning of the course, and doesn't test on anything that isn't on the lecture slides. He zoom recorded each lecture and even emphasized accessibility by allowing students to attend remotely. He's hilarious, open, and honest. I highly reccomend
I found the course/prof engaging, but wouldn't recommend for all learning styles or if you prefer more conceptual qs or essays. Something to consider: exams are MC, and we quickly go through 35-50 slides per class, so studying heavily involves memorization of quite a bit of material. Prof is willing to answer qs and posts slides/lecture recordings.
One of my favorite classes I've taken at NYU. He makes the subject matter so interesting and very clear. The class is lecture heavy, and you need to be good at memorization for the tests. He really cares about students and the quality of his lectures and class. Totally recommend, fantastic professor and super fun class!
His lectures are so interesting, he is very honest and nonjudgemental, willing to talk with you about anything. The class is super straightforward, if you attend class and review the slides you're good for the exams. Very reasonable, open to feedback. Which is why I don't understand the hate here, if there's an issue, just communicate with him
if you're a psych major, TAKE THIS CLASS. Very genuine, caring, always available, especially via email, fair exams, engaging material. Loved the class, loved the professor. 1000000% recommend. this is coming from a psych major whos graduating this year. no other psych class tops this one: material wise, professor wise, and exam wise. TRUST.
Ian is an interesting and chill person. He likes to share personal stories during his lectures. While his stories are interesting, I feel like he spends too much time on them. I wish he could spend more lecture time explaining the actual course material. His tests are extremely SPECIFIC and you really have to memorize A LOT of material for them.
Ian was a fair and nice guy who really only quized on what he said he would. He likes to joke and is extremely open to feedback, and is very reachable outside of class hours. Take a chance and try this course out.
Deciding to take a course with Professor Reed? DO IT! An A is very attainable - all exam material comes from the lecture slides which he posts. Engaging lectures w/ thoughtful stories and details from his experience as a therapist. If you found him or this class difficult, I am offended that we go to the same university.. do some soul searching
I'm not even sure what my grade in this class is and depending on one take home quiz (25%) I could drop from an A. I don't understand how the take home has so much weight vs the A average I have from all my exams. This class was unnecessarily hard for the class that it is. Professor also voices his "controversial" opinions as facts. Avoid.
Ian is one of the best professors I've ever had. Not only does he make jokes during class, but you can tell he truly cares for the students and is passionate about the class. All the exams are based on the lecture slides so during the lecture you don't have to panic if you missed something he said. The exams are a breeze if you review the slides.
As a non-psych major, I got out of this class what I expected. Clear grading, straightforward exam questions from the slides, and learned a wide-variety of topics. If you aren't able to memorize a lot, his exams may be difficult for you. Reed as a person is okay. Came off a bit arrogant and condescending at times, but the content is the same.
Ian is a great professor and a funny guy. His lectures were really interesting and exams were very straightforward, so you'll be fine as long as you review the class slides. He also posts recordings of his lectures in case you need them. And if you're ever confused or just want to talk, he's super accessible outside of class. Definitely recommend!
Interesting class. recordings are posted so you can always go back and view them. exams are online and open-book. Questions are specific but you have access to everything. I transcribed slides so answers were easy to find during exams. Besides the take-home (which he ended up giving the class extra points, thankfully!), it was an easy class
Lecture slides and recordings are available to students and the exams are straightforward. There were 3 exams and a short article summary. He is very accessible outside of class. Take this class if you can!
Ian is one of the BEST psych professors in NYU. I've taken 2 of his classes & learned so much. Lectures are clear & he highlights the important points that he will test on the exams. If you take the time to watch lectures & review material before exams, you'll do well. Sweet & genuinely cares about his students and the material. 100% recommend!
Reed's lectures are scintillating, clever and material is laid out wonderfully. You will learn so much about the nature of psych. disorders -- info that will stay with you long after course is done. Cannot recommend enough: not only is subject matter fascinating and insightful, the prof genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Loved this class so much. If you are contemplating which psychology courses to take, I strongly suggest anything given by Professor Reed. He is very erudite and kind and puts his all into his classes. He is an excellent instructor and super knowledgeable, and you will benefit tremendously from his classes. Great intro into evolutionary psychology!
I took two abnormal psychology(online) and clinical psychology(in-person). You can really learn many things from his professional experience and his explanation of the lecture. He always have recordings, so I watch them at flexible time. Tests are not hard if you review the slides. Helpful, Knowledgeable, and Professional professor. I love him!
Top-tier professor, he's very smart and cares deeply about his students.
Best. Professor. Ever. Prof. Reed is so good at getting his material across and giving relatable examples to help the material stick. Honestly very easy class if you pay attention during lecture. Don't listen to the bad reviews, he clearly cares alot about his students. Tests are taken 95% from slides and 5% from understanding. Easy A.
love ian hes funny, i always went to lecture and rewatched them on 2x before the exam while taking notes and i did very well
This is my first time ever rating but I just had to. Professor Reed (he likes to go by Ian) is the funniest, sweetest most chillest professor at all of NYU. If you can take any of his online classes DO IT!!! Trust me. Ian is FABULOUS ABSOLUTELY FABOO!!! I cannot stress this enough TAKE HIS CLASS!! You won't regret it.
He is funny. He uses his own slides, so no textbook is required. I took this class online and all the exams were online too;) Also, the lowest exam will not be counted toward the final grade, so it's pretty easy to get A. The recitation was useless but it was mandatory....
Professor Reed is amazing! He is funny, kind, and extremely approachable. The tests and article summary assignment are pretty straightforward...Definitely take him for Abnormal Psychology (or any class for that matter)!
Genuinely the easiest class I've ever taken. Attendance is not mandatory and the class is online. I didn't learn a lot but I learned a little for the tests. There are 3 exams and 1 article summary, those are the only assignments as readings are optional. The professor is kinda like a fun YouTuber. Very encouraging on student participation.
Passionate about psychology. Full of himself. Shut down almost every student question because they weren't phrased well enough for him to understand. Extremely easy exams, they were online and open note, so no need to attend the class or study. Made fun of "PC" people who wanted safe spaces because they don't work, no need to be rude imo.
Lectures don't require attendance. He lacks in communication and not accountable for projects/exams. One exam, worth 30% of our grade, had MC, SA, and T/F. Despite spending 75 minutes on it, he curved the total from 50 to 41 points, citing his TA's reluctance to review SA responses. This ambiguous grading is unfair, making each error more costly.
Easiest class I have ever taken in my life. Interesting topics and he's a chill dude. Couldn't recommend enough.
This is for his Columbia Course: Highly recommend! Received an A+ and didn't attend a single lecture after the first exam. He records all lectures so I just watched them when it came time to study for exams in 2x speed. Very effective and so thankful for that since it was an 8:40. Required a lot of cramming though!
Reed is an amazing professor and is clearly very passionate about psychology. The exams were also very easy, as he would make presentations with the material we needed to study on them and share them with all of the students. I would 100% take his class again, or any class that he teaches.
Take this course if you have a really good memory. The exams are in person now.
Ian is a really good guy, he makes his lectures easy to understand and his lectures were fun, not super heavy material. Abnormal psych was not difficult as long as you memorized the key points he highlights from lecture slides. 3 exams and one QDAFI is your grade. Many get As because he makes it easy to pass and focuses more on you learning.
Best professor ever! Never went to class, didn't study, still got an A. Recommend.
Professor Reed is clearly passionate about what he teaches and always finds a fun way to do it. I took this class in Fall 2023, and it was online. The class is very lecture-heavy, but attendance is not mandatory. The questions on the exams were multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blanks, and everything was taken from the lecture slides.
What a guy. He's funny. And he's really smart. You can tell he knows a LOT about what he's teaching. The lectures are kinda a lot sometimes, and they can get a little long. REALLY test-heavy (3/4 tests are graded for 90% of your grade), but if you study and pay attention in class, it should be easy. Love this guy.
Ian is so great, he's hilarious and so so smart. He cares a lot about what he's teaching and its really clear that he does. Ian Unchained is awesome and you should totally go, it's a good way to learn more and develop a connection. Super test heavy though, I suck at memorizing, which is all the tests are. Thats the only bad part about the class
Ian is a funny guy and clearly very interested in what he teaches, making for a fun class with good information. However, the grading is structured around 4 exams worth 90% of your grade which is crazy. The exams are also 100% memorization-based multiple choice questions, so it can be daunting trying remember everything.
Avoid taking abnormal psych with him. Despite its reputation as an easy A, the class is far from it. His ambiguous wording leads to trick questions, and he responds condescendingly when challenged. Nearly 93.33% of the grade comes from 3 exams with no drops. An interesting subject overshadowed by poor teaching style.
Inflexible and rigid with poorly worded questions, I wouldn't recommend taking this Professor if you want any sort of reason when it comes to grading exams.
AMAZING. Class was so enjoyable since he was just so funny and makes pop culture references all the time which made his lectures even more engaging. Tests were fair, in my opinion, as they mainly focused on content covered in slides. Also brought a fart machine to our last class?? HAHA
This was an in-person class for fall 2024, would not take again, make sure to take the online one. Too much people, 90 percent test (4 total pen & paper scantron test), and 10 percent recitation homework, no make up test/extra credit, no curve, def not a easy class like people said, not accessible outside of class, do not offer re-grade.
Extremely funny and as long as you read his slides, you are set for the exams.
WORST CLASS HONESTLY. He always crammed five, 60 page slides into one 50 question exam and it was so hard to know what to study for. I was thinking psych would be so easy but this class just made me even hate the idea of becoming a psychiatrist.
Ian is such a funny guy. Supper chill. Very knowledgeable man. His class was super interesting and engaging most of the time. Tests cover about 5 chapters each. Honestly, it's not bad, I never spent more than half a day studying for his class. If you know how to study properly then it's easier than studying every little thing in his ppts.
this class was not terrible at all. best advice is to just memorize everything that is highlighted in the powerpoints, if you do that you will be golden. i started making flashcards like 3-4 days before, memorized through repetition, never attended lecture and did very well in the class.
Ian is an excellent professor. His lectures are well-structured, and he is very funny. We were assessed via three exams (four with the lowest grade dropped), the exams were quite easy. I imagine that the negative reviews are from people who didn't bother to study, and studying for this class involves memorizing the slides. Very straightforward.
Ian is an alright professor. Not the most respectful to women, not the most accurate about scientific evidence/interpretation. His lectures are engaging, but he isn't the best at facilitating discussions. When answering questions, seems like he's more concerned with proving that he knows what he's talking about than actually answering the question.
Ian's classes are always fun because of his lectures. He's knowledgeably and relatable, but the exams are simply too much. Having solely multiple choice exams based off hundreds of pages of slides for 90% of your grade with no study guide is borderline unfair. Makes things way harder than they need to be.
My favorite professor during my time at NYU.
Reed was a good and funny professor. Attendance was only mandatory for test day. I never came to class and still got As/A-s on my exams. The QDAFI's are so easy as well. Highly recommend this class cause there are 3 exams and they are all pretty easy and it's all multiple choice. Just study the slideshows and you will be good to go!
If you're a psych major, you NEED to take his elective "Sex, Evolution, and Human Behavior," full stop. Absolutely fascinating class that completely changed the way I view psych and people. It describes *why* we have certain behaviors, not simply *how* those behaviors unfold. Easy class as well with very fair exams based on lecture material only.
WORST CLASS HONESTLY.
WORST CLASS HONESTLY. DON'T TAKE HIMMMM
Need to read and memorize all PPT, too long and complicated, with lots of data and subtle points. Plz do not take this.
We don't get to take a look at our exam after everyone's finished but we get to request re-grade if we got valid reason, which is so confusing because how can we come up with a valid reason without looking at our exam. Also, the extra credit questions for exam 2 are for example, his routine before bed that he mentioned at some point of 8 lectures.
Material is really interesting but the prof is not the best. The tests were based on ALL the slides. My study guides were at least 80 pages of information. The extra credit questions are irrelevant. Also as much as I hate homework, your grade is just based on the tests.
Professor Reed is knowledgeable, hilarious, and an expert in the field. I wish this class were in person, but the online lectures were just as engaging. This course covers all areas of psych with a focus on clinical. Lecture is not mandatory, but I strongly suggest going because it's really interesting. 4 online exams; drop 1. Go to Ian Unchained!
LOVEDDD abnormal psych, just attend lectures and memorize the highlighted info on slides, and you'll get an A. Don't listen to these other reviews, they didn't go to class. Extra credit was easy if you ATTENDED CLASS.
The class is based on three exams and one assignment, which is tough if you're not a good test taker. Professor Reed is accessible outside of class, but not accommodating at all. He seems not to care about his students, especially their well-being in the course, which is odd, considering he is a psychology professor.
He makes his lectures interesting and engaging. There are 4 online exams and your lowest grade is dropped. Exam questions are basically all multiple choice and the content comes directly from the lecture slides, making it easy to study for. I never found myself stressing over this class.
Love love love this class. Graded on very easy exams that come straight from the slides. Tests aren't proctored so it's easy to cheat, but his class was really interesting so I still attended lectures. Highly recommend especially if you have a otherwise heavy course load
3 exams with no drops, so you need to ace every exam to get an A in the class. Tests are easy if you memorize literally every single slide. You also don't have to show up to lecture since he records all of them. But make sure to watch them because he throws in bonus questions. Start studying 3 or 4 days before the exam and you should be golden!
Really funny professor and easy class. Extra credit questions seem random but are easy to answer if you watch the lectures. All readings are optional. Professor Reed comes across as standoffish, but he usually enjoys interacting with students -- he's just direct. You can debate/discuss controversial topics in weekly Ian Unchained calls.
