Unfair, unreasonable ,demonstrated no clarity, shows favoritism to Girls
Keep it up Schmitzy.
pretty boring to listen to... but at least he's not too hard
OKAY... your going to fall asleep. Okay? Now listen, Okay. BROWN!!!!! Big Bucks Inc. *right*? OKAY dont take this guy,
Overall a good professor. Of course the class if hard - it's organic chemistry! However, he explains things well and is also very helpful outside of class.
Even though may seem boring or like a game show host and always says ok or right, he is not that bad of a professor, is very self-explanatory on what he expects in students, Exams are tough but still I would say take him he is not bad as some people say.

It is a hard class but is not too bad if you do and study as he tells you too.
He's a good teacher, if you do your homework you'll be ok. Tests are hard and he gives NO partial credit AT ALL! I found him rather unapproachable outside of lecture. This is your book...this is still your book.
As exciting as a 'vacfume.' Probably the best for Organic.
I felt he was very boring.

The worst Chemistry professor I ever had. Took this class many years ago. Took it again with someone else and got an "A". I remember you buying a box of condoms while I was working at the 711 on route 60 and wondered why you needed them.
I cannot explain just how horrible this prof.is. I was forced to leave early almost every day for fear of losing my sanity. ~OKAY~ will haunt you in your sleep!!!!!!!!!
His voice is very monotone and boring. He's an ok teacher, but I hate chemistry. He's not the easiest in the world, and he could teach better, but he's not horrible either. The only grades he takes are tests so you have to study your butt off.
"OKAY", "This is your book, this is still your book", and many other rememberable quotes to be enjoyed in this class. Starts slow on easy stuff, rushes to finish hard stuff. Do not take him for organic, or anything else for that matt
The best prof. to take for Organic. Not the livliest person, but he makes the hard parts as easy as possible.
TOUGH! But a decently good teacher. Tests are fair.
Terrible, the most impersonal professor i have ever had. I liked Chemistry until i had this guy. Very dry & hard to understand. Boring!

He is not that bad. He says "mmmkay" way too much, but he scales, and his tests really aren't that bad.
He does say mmkay a billion times. Organic is a hard class and our chemistry department does not help any. If you are not a premed student... go to Ashland. 40% failure rate can't be the students fault year after year...Mmmkay
Organic 2 is soooo much easier than organic 1. Sort of. Schmitz is the one to take for organic. Just do the problems.
Great lab teacher! Great explanations when it came to those harder labs. Midterm and final were pretty straighforward from the lab manual. Occassional quizzes, and dropped the lowest one. Also dropped the lowest lab report. The best to take for a lab!
This class is boring and hard mkay...don't take dr.schmitz mkay....he sux mkay!
WOw did your class suck!! youre the worst!! Marshall University Should dump you Quickly!!Dont take his classes!! You'll regret it!!
Really really hard tests. He is happy when students dont understand. I've fallen asleep over and over in that class. Just remember, this is your book, and this is still your book!
Horrible teacher. Doesn't explain the concepts he tests on. Tests are like having your kidney removed while still being conscious. Annoying personality. Started giving notes on the overhead too small to copy, moved them to fast to try. This guy is a joke.
He is not the best teacher. Not very clear with his dicussion(Thinks you should already know) he will help but makes it very difficult. I heard he wsa the only good Chemistry teacher though so I will be taking him again.
Taught the first 5 chapters extremely well and in great detail. After that everything went downhill. Started covering Chapters in a class period and a half. And get used to "This is your book..." *flips book around* "This is STILL your book..."
The problem with Schmitz is that he has to teach hard subject matter (Organic Chem). He's definitely the lesser of two evils, but the grading scale is pretty harsh and not even his linear scale can justify the low grades (it's not uncommon for the D's to outnumber A's, B's, and C's combined).
Granted, Chemistry is not an easy subject to teach, Schmitz should read a manual on speaking to large groups of people.
This professor definitely doesn't need to be teaching freshman! He doesn't know how to talk to them or help! At first the class was alright, but then he was just everywhere with the material! Find another person to take chem from, especially if you don't want to take it twice!!
Nice guy- not personable. Not really hard, explains stuff as many times as necessary but annoying habit of starting new chaps at the end of class- really monotone- don't take him in the morning. Doesn't care who you are or what your name is and won't make any attempt to find out.
Schmitz is a good teacher, if you already know or can easily learn and understand Chemistry, or if you are willing to teach yourself everything on your own. His tests are very hard and don't really follow his notes. Schmitz is a nice man, but he is very boring and very distant from his students.
better than Hubbard! but still not good!
You might learn a lot in here, but don't expect it to help you on the tests. If you can teach yourself from the text book, you'll do well. The exams are just...painfully complex. Good luck if you have to take this guy.
DON'T EVER TAKE SCHMITZ! NOT ONLY DO HIS NOTES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS IMPOSSIBLE TESTS, BUT HIS DRONING VOICE AND WITHERING FACE MADE ME WANT TO COMMIT SUICIDE. I COULD BARELY STAY AWAKE FOR 10 MINUTES. HIS CURVE IS HARDLY HELPFUL. HE'S TEACHING 211 IN THE FALL, SO GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!
Schmitz is the most heartless professor in all of Marshall. I was .4 points off from a B and he wouldn't raise it. He doesn't care who is in the class, and if his students learn anything. Retire already Schmitz. Oh yeah, and he yelled at me in his office when I asked for help. ****.
Dr. Schmitz is a horrible professor. He is unfair on grading and just a jerk about things. I took his class twice and failed the first time and got a D the second time. He doesnt explain things well and is always behind schedule which makes it harder for you. He doesnt help much outside of class and honestly doesnt care about his students.
WOW did your class suck!! You were one of the worst professors that Ive ever had!!
has a voice like ben stein. if you EVER go to his office for help don't think you're gonna come out of there with anything of importance.
The class average on the midterm was 42.3 I think that says more than anything. He is one of the most boring people I know and I would rather pull my toenails out with pliers than have him again.
SUCKED, could not understand a word that came out of his mouth
OK. Here is the deal. Schmitzy-Pie actually has rather easy tests, the catch is you have to show your work and work problems in the correct way. You must just come to class and do the assigned problems and it's not that bad at all. He could make the tests a LOT harder. He is actually VERY entertaining. If you turn what he says into innuendos = fun!
One of the best chem. instructors i've had.
does not give good notes and does not explain himself well.
You know I liked this class before I got my grade. I should have had a B because thats what I had on all of my test(the only thing your grade comes from) but it said that I had a C which makes me mad so yeah... If you dont like Chem then dont take him, but if you know your stuff you'll do fine in this class, well maybe...
He has to be the worst professor in Marshall's history. He's an organic teacher teaching inorganic chem, he has really weird examples, and he can't talk. I did have fun in the class because of the weird things he said-I've got a good sense of humor, otherwise the class would have been enough to make me contemplate suicide. Get out while you can!
Not nearly as bad as he is made out to be. If you read the text, study, and do all of the homework, you should be fine. Most people who gave him a bad rating probably either never came to class or just aren't able to do chemistry, no matter how good the professor is. This isn't high school anymore, kids!
I think he is a good prof. He goes really slow at first to make sure that you learn the fundamentals, no one can deny that. He is willing to help if you are willing to help yourself. Yes his lectures may be a bit boring, but if you go to class, read over the chp,and do the problems u WILL get an A.
OKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. Now, Dr. Schmitz is a fair professor with fair tests. He teaches you nothing more than what you need to know and his tests are pretty straight forward. Do your work, study up, and you'll pass this class (maybe even pull off an A) easily! He's also pretty funny, to boot.
Okay. So heres what I have to say about Schmitzy. He has terrible grammar and pronunciation which is a big thing for me and annoys the hell out of me. His test are fairly easy(although i have had chemistry before) he gives a lot of examples in class but dont ever ask him questions outside of class cause he probably wont answer you.
HORRIBLE teacher. doesn't care if you understand, asks questions and mocks the answers given. teaches simplistic problems and tests on difficult ones. NO partial credit.
Ohhhhhhhkayyyyy now! This class was not that bad especially if you had a good chem class in high school. He teaches you what is on the tests. Lecture is boring but you should definitely attend. He is very corny.
Okay. This man is a terrible teacher. We ended up missing a few classes due to snow, and the 10am class didn't, and he tried to keep us up with them! Went to him for help, and was very disinterested in helping, even for a few minutes...had better things to do. Best route with organic at Marshall is to wait til the summer and take O'Connor for them.
he is not hard but i HATED his class! i hated his way of teaching, his way of grading well basically i just hated him as a professor! maybe he is a good person out side of the class but for sure he is not good for teaching.
I LOVE SCHMITZ! Quite a few people in my class said he seemed mean if you went to his office hours, but I think its just his personality - he blurts something out without thinking, but if you continue to talk to him he will be really helpful. Tests are reasonable and though he has an odd grading system, it's very fair. I miss his class! =(
He is a fairly easy teacher, but the course content is difficult. He gives a lot of partial credit on exams and curves them.
Oh boy...this was rough! He was behind to the point that he lectured for a half hour before the 4th exam.Although this material wasn't on the exam, it was very distracting. The homework doesn't count...you only get points taken off if you don't do it.The material seems easy, but there is a lot to be learned in what seems like an unusually short time.
Try to avoid. I studied avidly, did all of the non-required homework problems, and had a tutor look over them and still failed the tests. He's Very conservative with partial credit (you have to show your math work) and there's not many questions on the test. He doesn't teach anything in class, he just works out problems.
ladies and gentz... i advise you not to take this teacher... he is beyound horrible... One section of your test will be worth 15 points, but the catch is, is if u miss one thing the whole equation is wrong. There is no partial credit.. He never ends class early lol he looks at the clock and keeps gooooN DDDDont do IIITTTT
this man is waaaaayyyyyy toooooo nasal! you can hear his awful voice from a mile away!!!! easy enough, but this class sucked!!! ie i don't like ochm anyway
One of the worst professors I've ever had. His lecture notes are verbatim from the book. He doesn't review before exams and doesn't encourage discussion or ??s. Instead, he moves on to new material before testing on the old. He also introduces and tests on new material during dead week and talks during exams which is extremely distracting.
Easy class, but learned a lot. Guaranteed an A if you were able to prove what you learned by identifying unknowns on your own in a small time-frame. A little hectic at the end due to said small time-frame, but you can't beat the guaranteed A. Awesome class overall.
If you go to class and really pay attention, you will make an A. A lot of people complain and say his class is impossible; most of these people are the ones who sit in the back and are absent once a week.
Do not take this professor!! He gives poor examples during class and then makes the tests extremely difficult. He is not willing to help you during his office hours and everyone I know that was in it ended up dropping it. Also, your only grades are tests.
He is boring and his tests are ridiculous...By the end of the semester 15 people were left out of a class of 52
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!! he goes over an easy example of a problem the entire class when the actual questions on the homework and tests are soooo much harder! no matter how hard you study, the tests are so impossible, you've wasted all your time!
I was a straight "A" student in honors courses prior to taking this class. At first my confidence level dropped but I quickly realized it wasn't me, it was him. His lectures didn't help at all. I received better grades when I didn't attend class and just read the book. I actually went to his office once for help and he was extremely rude.
-_- If youve got too much time on your hands, then hes the professor for you. You have to pay for the online homework, if you dont make an 80% or more on the homework, he'll take points off your next test. He scales. His homework takes way too much time to finish. Enough to keep me from working on other classes. Dont take unless your a CHM Major.
He's nowhere near as bad as everyone on here is saying. The course is demanding, but if you keep up with the homework, his tests are easy, plus he drops the lowest one. I got an A with room to spare, and this was my first chemistry course in 11 years (my junior year of high school).
Great, smart, helpful, and brilliant professor. Best Chemistry teacher I've ever had.
Class seems easy until you see his tests. Teaches on easy problems, tests on near impossible ones. Tests are short but each problem is worth a ton. Very slight partial credit too, get one bond wrong and you might get 2 out of 20. Hes the best route for orgo at MU though, at least he actually TEACHES you, unlike the other org. chem. professors here.
He is very boring and he always laughs about stupid things when lecturing which is annoying. He completely explains the labs (every little detail) which is annoying expessionally if you did the homework and already know what the lab is about. He takes forever to explain the simplest things. Also thinks everyone is trying to eat his lab chemicals.
Horrible stay away at all cost. I spent hours every week teaching myself the first four chapters of the chm book. I spent time in the tudor center. He takes for ever to explain the smallest thing. 30 min of lecture is the biggest waste of ur life. STAY AWAY!!!
He has the driest humor ever, but it's still funny somehow. He is EXTREMELY LOUD. Having said that, he does explain everything you need to know in the labs. The difficulty of the class really depends on how tough the TA's grade your labs. Make sure you attend class though, you don't have much leeway.
Dude has a good heart, I think, but he is terrible at prepping you for exams, and he gives homework that takes 10 hours to do, that drops your grade a letter if you don't do it, but it doesn't help your grade if you do. He's the worst science teacher I've ever had, and him teaching this joke of an intro class isn't helping. Stay clear if possible.
I usually get As in classes but since trying to teach myself and the tutoring center wasnt enough I failed because he is utterly useless at both teaching and helping. If you try to ask a question he looks at you like your the dumbest person on earth and then says something really sarcastic. Other pros dont even think he knows what he is doing. RUN!
He is not helpful what so ever. He lectures for as long as posible and puts you to sleep. It is a struggle to keep your grades up in that class, and he made me cry.
Probably the best teacher for organic at Marshall. His class definitely wasn't easy, but if you put in the effort and do the assigned problems, you should do fine. His tests are very fair and he curves each one. If you take it over the summer, though, you'll have two exams and a final the last week of class. I'd definitely recommend him though :-)
Schmitz is not an easy prof by any means; he does, however, recommend problems out of the text. Do these over and over! Many WILL show up on exams in his summer section. Start off strong with the IR/NMR stuff so when you get to the harder matter you have a cushion! Very little partial credit, avg 7-10 point curve. All written exams, no concept Q's.
This class wasn't all that difficult for me, but other classes made it more difficult. Schmitz goes REALLY SLOW. We were supposed to have 5 exams + final, we got in 3 exams, then he decided to have one more the last day before the final. Slow is a +, his "partial credit" is terrible. His exams are 6-10 questions.
Not bad overall.
This is a lab class so attendance is mandatory. The professor explains everything very clearly. He isn't usually around once you actually get in the lab though. Really the difficulty of this course depends on how helpful the TAs are and how difficult they are when they grade your labs.
Dr. Schmitz is an excellent instructor for the dreaded beast that is organic chemistry. Taking him now, and so far acing the exams and enjoying the material. Yes, failure rates on exams are high and lots of students have disappeared after mid terms, but that's just organic chemistry. If you need this class, Schmitz is a great choice.
He likes to drone on and on about one topic to the point that you want to fall asleep. Go to class if you want to pass. No power points, just lecture notes. Tests are always behind schedule. Tough grader, not a lot of partial credit.
I took this class at 8 a.m. That was definitely not a good idea! He knows what he is talking about, but he is very boring! On the plus side, his tests are pretty easy if you've had chemistry before.
Schmitz isn't necessarily a bad teacher, but he is so boring and slow. I've heard many people complain about this class, but I don't think it is that hard. If you've had chemistry in high school, this class should be a breeze. If you go over the sample problems he gives in the book, the tests should be no problem and I managed an A on all of them.
Shmitz is a great organic teacher. He is very clear on topics, but does tend to drone on.. I think this is why people have trouble understanding him. He confuses them by over iterating topics. Physical chemistry he doesn't seem to have much of an interest in though and is not quite as good at teaching as he is Organic. Tests are strait forward.
The class isn't too hard, but the lectures are so boring and monotone
Considering its organic chemistry, he tries to explain things and he is happy to help his students if they ask him. Its a tough class but he is such a nice teacher.
He is pretty unclear in class but you can learn based off of the book and what he writes on the board. He lectures very slow so you dont cover a lot of material on each test. The class is passable but you must be prepared to work for your grade and find help somewhere than inside the class.
His class is horrid and one of the worst professors I have ever had. He goes way too slow and then puts a bunch of information the tests that we've barely seen - let alone got a chance to practice. I would not recommend taking him, and would cut your losses and take the class in Ashland. You'll be able to save your GPA that way.
His lectures are the hardest thing you will ever have to sit through. Especially a morning lecture. He doesn't follow his own syllabus. His grading is average. He doesn't give many exams, every 3 weeks I'd say, for CHEM 203. He jumps around on the material. Never a smooth transition on switching to different matter. Makes a lot of chem jokes...
There's online homework, but it's very helpful right before tests. It was an easy course!
Taken during Summer Session. For the accelerated program, he was great. Homework never counted foragainst you as long as you got 75% completed. Exams are all that count. He's super willing to stay after class and explain anything, although he talks really slow. As long as you focus and take good notes, you'll do well.
Avoid, gears towards not giving A's. One 3 question quiz was gave the entire semester to determine a portion of your grade and he never curves. I received an 89.7 B after one of my assignments were magically lost after turned in. He was very good at explaining the labs, but it was also a bummer that a lab report was mandatory every week
A lobotomy would be less painful than sitting through Dr. Schmitz's pre-lab lectures. He talks in circles with a monotone drawl and sprays the front two rows with saliva. By the time you get to the lab portion of the class, you have no idea what to do other than not to eat the chemicals.
Very hard to stay awake during lecture. Hardly knows what the homework is on. Never tests on the material he lectures about and he is rude. Following along chapter by chapter will not help. Buying the book is a waste.
Most painful class to sit through. The syllabus was NEVER followed. He teaches so slow we only covered 10 out of the 23 chapters. The homework is online, you practically have to beg for help on and does not relate to what he teaches. If I never hear his dragged out monotoned voice again, it'll be too soon. The book taught me more than he ever could
Dr. Schmitz is not very generous when it comes to partial credit on his exams. I also don't like that the homework doesn't help your grade, but will hinder your grade if you don't do them. Also, the topics that he spends the smallest amount of time on is usually the problems that are worth the most on his exams.
Since it's a lab, reports and homework are obviously to be expected weekly. Only a midterm and final, but pop quizzes are given so read the lab manual before class.
Very disorganized. It was very unclear which material would be on the tests. Instructor was behind on covering material, tests were postponed & the class was unaware of the test dates. Online homework was due before the material was taught. Instructor graded very unfairly on exams & was not helpful during office hours.
Dr. Schmitz is a great professor. During pre-lab he would go over everything in detail of what the lab required. That being said, the lectures can be rather lengthy (45-60mins). During this time he will make it to where you get an A on the lab report. I recommend him if this is your first lab.
Organic is difficult, but I thought Dr. Schmitz was a fine teacher. He was helpful in his office hours, and he did a lot of examples and demonstrations. I studied quite a bit from the textbook in addition to his lectures to pass, though. He is kind of awkward, but he is pretty nice. His final was the most difficult exam I've ever taken.
The syllabus was NEVER followed. He teaches SO slow and is a very boring to listen too. The homework is online and does not relate to what he teaches (when asked a question from the homework he couldn't even answer it). Most painful class to sit through. You basically have to self-teach the material to yourself. ... Avoid!
This man is so intelligent, but he simply can't teach. He puts you to sleep and spends the entire class rambling on about whatever and then at the last ten minutes talks about the important stuff. The homework is online so be prepared to fork over an extra $50. Also, the homework usually happens before he teaches the material. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This class has a reputation for being one of the hardest, but Dr. Schmitz breaks things down to an understandable level. This was my first chemistry class, and I have received As on every exam. You have to go to class! The class average for every test is in the 50s, because nobody ever shows up. You get out of it what you are willing to put in.
Although Dr. Schmitz is a really tough grader, I can say that he is fair. He gives you the grade that you earn. One time after we all failed an exam, he told us that he wouldn't feel like he was doing his job if he let us off easy. And he's so right! His lectures are very dry, but skipping them will put you behind.
I don't understand why people think he's so bad. I have taken him for two courses and think he's excellent at explaining things. Lecture can and probably will get boring, but it's not completely unbearable like some say. He's extremely helpful outside of class. As long as you do the homework and study you should have no problem getting an A.
roughly 70 to 80% of grade is tests so if you don't know chemistry you are screwed for sure
Dr. Schmitz is an ok choice. He is very loud, uses lots of analogies to get his points across. He takes a long time explaining some of the easier topics, so the harder topics get less time later on. Be to use supplemental materials to learn in this course.
His lectures are extremely boring and he is really sarcastic. He gives pop quizzes so read every experiment before class. Tests are easy. TA's do all the grading
This class was pretty average. He often spent too long going over simple topics during lectures, but would ignore the things that needed to be discussed more. Quizzes were given every few classes, and you have to read the lab before the class in order to do well on them! He has a tendency to be rude, but he is very nice when talking one-on-one.
Although his class percentage layout is pretty weird, it was a good class. All you have to do is do the lab, take proper notes, and do well on the pre and post labs. You also have to do turn in a weekly lab report. He is a reasonable man. He gave us about five pop quizzes and drops the lowest score, the pop quizzes are 20% of the grade in the class
OKAYYYYYYYY CLASSSSSSSS!!!!! (Decent prof though overall. No complaints)
Oooooooookkkkkkkkkkkaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
It's like you're getting time taken off of your life span. Avoid him. AVOID HIM
Great prof
Tough class but his notes are straightforward and will be on the test in some form. Make sure to read the chapters before each test!
He is extremely lecture heavy. He doesn't use power-point or any visuals, so you have to be a quick writer and if you don't understand a concept you will have to learn it on your own time. None of his exams are multiple choice, but partial credit isn't an option. You either get full credit or none. Often shows up late for class and keeps you later.
Worst professor at Marshall. If you have him then youll want to change your entire schedule to avoid him at all costs. He is rude and mean during lecture and office hours. He is not a fair grader and wants to see students fail (not a joke. He has a competition with another professor to see who can fail more students).
Does not explain the concepts well. He is rude to students that ask questions. There are four tests and a final which make up 90% of your grade for the class. The online homework makes up 10% of your grade. Avoid this professor.
Gr8 for Orgo. Teaches the class slow. (BUY ORGO CHEM FOR A 2ND LANGUAGE FROM AMAZON!) Taken over the summer & in spring semester - Curves all exams BIG! Orgo Lab was tougher: product evaluations (what/how much did you make) & lab notebooks/reports (just be thorough) but still easy. LOVES Mechanisms/Reagents on tests! Hard to reach out of class tho
I think that to do well in any course one must work for it. That being said, he is by far the worst professor Ive ever had. His lectures are a waste of time, his exams (90% of total class grade) have nothing to do with lectures, and hes extremely rude to students. I studied hard for each exam and still ended up with my first college B. AVOID HIM!
Overall, Dr. Schmitz is a nice guy. The exams given in this class are pretty straightforward if you actually take the time to study/review the material. Exams are 90 percent of your grade, but if you know the material, youll be fine. You are also given unlimited attempts to do the online homework problems, meaning its easy to get full credit.
All he does is say "OkKaAyYYY" and "NoOOwWW" and "SSoooOO". Mediocre guy but horrible professor. If you don't have his old exams don't bother taking his class because you'll wanna leave Marshall permanently Also does not give partial credit or ANY credit for $40 Sapling. As he constantly says, THERE'S NO REST FOR THE WEARY IN SUMMER SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!
He sucks
He is relentless, has no sympathy for students. Tries to tell everyone that organic is not hard... nit picks to lower exam scores.
He is a great guy, Just a HARD teacher.
I love Larry. He is one of the most genuine chemistry professors in the department, and while his class isn't the easiest, if you put a little effort into it, you will do well. Please take him before he retires and the rest of the chemistry department professors tank your GPA. Have had him for Gen Chem, Lab, and Organic. A's in all classes.
Does not use blackboard. Did not provide a syllabus. Was rarely in the room during labs (TA's were very helpful luckily) Arrogant, Rude, and Disrespectful to students. The content of this course was fairly simple, but if you can avoid Dr. Schmitz I would do so at all costs!
Dr. Schmitz has TAs grade everything so a lot of the class is getting good TAs. He talks a lot during the lecture part of the lab, but he makes sure you understand the lab. You will more so have to rely on TAs for your grade and any help you need during class.
Dr. Schmitz is quite literally the worst professor I have ever had. He is completely unavailable outside of class, rarely answers emails, and likes to change requirements for assignments after many people already have them done. He doesn't even stay in the lab during class, but rather takes laps in the hallway. Don't ever take this guy, he sucks.
