He's hard...
This teacher runs on a system that works! I learned a lot! He lectures heavy and the tests are easy. He also took us to a ossies ( a pizza place) and feed us donuts for the final. He is really cool !
He's a strict professor, but you will definitely learn from him...He's a smart man, but the test were hard for me. Be very punctual he gives quizes at 8'oclock sharp.
Tough, but well respected professor...if you want to learn and be prepared, take him! You will leave having learned the aspects of our body both internally and externally. (Spring am class).
DR. Nak is very serious about the subject. He is not an easy teacher, but he is very fair. If you study, you will learn. If you want easy then dont take him, however if you want to learn and be prepared for whatever comes next he is your best bet.
Nakamura was very organized and gave notes to study from. His exams come from the notes and lectures. He has good pronounciation, unlike Sara (Huang). I highly recommend Nakamura, but you need time to study.
Great teacher, great class. Everything is well organized. Excellent lecture and lab.
hes tedious but wants you to succeed. he trys to help you to pass. i thought he was great, good sense of humor, really nice guy!!!
he's very hard. quizes in the beginning of the class and if you are late, that's your fault. if u dont do well on the quizes, they will definitely drop your overall grade. he doesnt really explain well, moves from topic to topic very fast. in the lab, he'
Dr. Nakamura is a strict teacher but very fair. You must study and keep up with the material to do well in the class. He's very serious and knowlegable about the material. He really cares about his students.
The best class and teacher I've ever have. Excellent organisation, exellent knowlege for all your future career. You should work very-very hard all semester but it will be payed. Not for students who like high grade for easy work.
Dr. Nakamura is the most difficult professor I've ever had; however, there is alot to learn from him. He's very strict but within reason- he is preparing his students for nursing school you know! If you're lazy, irresponsible, and want an easy way out, there's no room for you in his class!
read this comment and know that you have to be there on time! if you're 5 minutes late, you just missed one of the daily 10pt quizes. He's a good teacher but just make sure you actually listen to what he has to say and not slack off. He and his asst are very helpful in the lab. Study the lecture notes he gives you and a little bit of the book and y
Dr. Nak teaches a challenging and hard class. There are quizzes (about 13) and 4 tests + final but he gives you xtra credit. Just study his notes, read the book, don't be late and you'll do fine. He's preparing you for nursing school and other medical fields. He always answers your questions b/c he's very knowledgeable.
His lectures are very extensive and he will cover a lot of thing. It may seem over whelmeing but his exams are fair.
this guy is so anal about you doing EVERYTHING yourself he clearly states that everything is your fault leaving no room for the students to rely on him as a teacher or even worse a mentor. yes, he is smart but i would recommend taking another professor.
He is most horrible and irretated instructor that i ever had. He is not helpful and does not care if you understand the material or not. His favorite phrase "there is no short cuts" is very annoying and should not be used because we are all grown ups and we should be treated like once. DON'T EVER TAKE HIM BECAUSE U WILL REGRET IT!!!!!
Dr. Nakamura is the worst instructor that i have ever had. He does not explain well and when u do not understand the material, he will not explain to u again. His way of communicating with students is awful because he talks to them like he is a smart ass and they are nobody. This is not how the teacher is supposed to talk to his students.Avoid him.
This is truly a great teacher. He is very helpful and gives you typed notes on what you need to know. Of course you have to study. This is not a class for lazy people. He has helped me very much to get where I am today a RN

Prof. Nak.'s approach to teaching leaves you feeling as if you have to fend for yourself. Yes he gives you typed notes, but after that you're on your own. You basically have to remember EVERYTHING in the entire book. Just studying for a "pop quiz" can take hours. He's really tough and has likely forgotten that LAVC is NOT a university. Stay away!!!
Are you f*n kidding!?If you can't handle Dr. Nak,you'll be choking on my dust as I blow past you in nursing school.Get a new major,PLEASE!His tests are not hard-if you prepare. He gives crazy xtracredit.Again, do the public a favor-be a bank teller or something if you can't handle this class!
Prof. Nak is horrible. He isn't willing to help if you don't understand the material. Going to Nursing is hard and he is making it even harder by not letting you learn Micro. He treats LAVC students as though they are in pre-school. STAY AWAY! BEWARE!
I took Bio 3 for winter 06. I found the class hard at first because there was so much to do, but he really does make things clear if your listen. Also he's a hard ass about some rules but he's funny when he tries. Just read the notes and listen to the lectures and you'll be fine.
Prof. Nakamure is a horrible instructor who doesn't care if you understand the material or not. He is not willing to help you and he is always using his annoying phrase "there are not shortcuts" Sorry, but this is annoying and innaproprite. We are in college, not in pre-school. Avoid him before you regret it. STAY AWAY!
Professor Nakamura is no good, and mean. He bombards you with every itty bitty detail which you will not use in your career, unless you are going to become a microbiologist. above all, the material in the book will not prepare you for his exam. He focuses on the most redundent pieces of informations just sabotage you on the exam. DO NOT TAKE HIM
He's a great professor and a really nice guy. He isn't easy and expects his students to study and learn (imagine that!). At first, he seems really strict and cold, but he's actually really nice. The only reason things in class might not be clear is because some things aren't fully understood by the medical community yet. He's very helpful.
gives a lot of pop quizzes...good lab instructor
Extremely knowledgeable, but expected his students to be PhD students- he should be more approachable and not have the attitude that we should know everything already!

This instructor is the worse one that i've had. Not helpful, hard, and mean. Beware!!!!!!!!
The material in this class is difficult but the teacher is great. The expectations are clear from day one and the only way to not pass is to not follow instructions or not go to class. There are many opportunities for extra credit and the quizzes are not hard if you have done the reading. Dr. Nak has a hard shell but is a softie at heart.
THERE'S NO OTHER WAY TO GO BUT SUCCEED IN HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS STUDENT. HIS CLASS' NOT EASY BUT HE OFFERS A GOOD QUALITY AND MEANINGFUL EDUCATION. I'M STILL TAKING HIS CLASS AND LOSING SLEEP OVER STUDY BUT I KNOW IT'LL BENEFIT ME IN THE END. A FIRST-RATE TEACHER TO ME.
HIS VERY RIGID BUT MEANS NO HARM. I JUST NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY HE ACTS LIKE THIS IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF MICRO. IF IT WAS ONLY INTRO. HIS EXAMS ARE VERY CHALLENGING AND TRICKY! IF YOU'RE A LITTLE SLOW TO GET IT...YOU'LL STAY BEHIND SINCE MOST OF YOUR TIME IS OVER CONSUMED WITH WORK, AND IT WAS NEVER ENOUGH TO GET A DESCENT GRADE IN HIS CLASS.
Not an easy class, but WORTHWHILE!!! Tests are straight forward IF YOU KNOW THE INFO. This is not a class to sleep through. You must study to earn your A. Take him if you want to LEARN something. Everything he does is for a reason... to help the class run smoothly and to help his students succeed. He makes himself available. Highly recommended
Dr. Nakamura is the best Microbiology teacher ever!! Yeah people tell horrible stories about him, but don't listem to them! Of course the subject is hard, so you have to really really study HARD! He always tries his best to explain it the way students can easily understand it. Plus, he is very approachable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! =)
DR. NAKAMURA IS A NICE PERSON, I HOLD HIM IN HIGH ESTEEM. HE HAS A VERY GOOD HEART. MICRO GENERALLY IS NOT AN EASY CLASS, ONE HAS TO READ 100% TO GET AN (A) BUT HE WILL MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN YOUR BEST TO GET THE LOWEST GRADE. HE IS NOT INTERESTED IN FAILING STUDENTS. HE HAS NOTHING TO GAIN. IF I AM TO TAKE A CLASS, I WILL PICK HIM OVER & OVER AGAIN
Dr. Nak knows his stuff - and he's good at it. Pay attention, take notes, do the reading and ask questions if you don't understand. He really wants you to succeed, and will help. Opportunities for extra credit. Put in extra time for study - it's worth it. No one knows Micro like this teacher, so take advantage of learning from the best!
Very narrow minded, not flexible and avid book reader. This is a teacher one should definitely avoid if a seat can be found in any other class.
Makes the class completely unenjoyable when it can be a fun class! Is demeaning and condescending to students. Runs over on lectures every time, rambling on about unrelevant topics, then cuts lab time short. He's cantankerous and dogmatic. Don't take him!
Very challenging, but he will help you if you need it. I have him for lab and while my lecture professor is probably the worst teacher in the world, Nakamura helps clarify a lot of the material.
He is awesome,he is extremely knowledgeable to every topic that he introduced in class.you just need to study seriously bec.his subjects are no joke. He will pushed you to the limit until you realize you know more than you think you know.If you need a great prof.take Dr.Nakamura bec.he will find every possible way to help you
The students that complained this semester where in my class, they were not good students at all. They were rude and disrespectful. Prof Nak is so knowledgeable and he is an excellent professor. I love Micro now because of him. If you want to learn and don't mind working hard, take him for Micro.
It's a difficult class to take with a tough instructor. Dr. Nakamura gives lots of extra credit questions, hard to get it though. He is very helpfull, very prompt, he knows his stuff very well. I consider his class an adventure and big challenge, but I think he is agreat teacher, afterall. You have a lot to learn from his class. You can get an A.
He is a very challenging professor, not easy but very knowledgeable. I highly reccommend him.
Oh, I read most the comments so far! I am sure a future student is confused what to do. Ok, if you know you are in school to STUDY, take him! He is very hard, hard class also, but he knows his stuff VERY well. I studied like hell for 4 months, but I am happy I got an A. Guys, this is how it's going to be in NURSING! Stop ****ing! TAKE HIM!
Dr. Nak is an exceptional teacher and a fine human being. He offers more than enough extra credit to make up for any personal emergencies one might have while taking his course. Anyone complaining about him is a slacker and a whiner. TAKE HIS CLASS! I promise you won't regret it and you will know your sh**!
Anyone you has rated Dr. Nakamura poorly honestly needs to stop and take school seriously. YOU are the ones failing and scared of a challenge. You wont get anywhere in life without hardwork. This man is fair, extremely smart, and makes sure everyone understands the big picture. You need to put effort, you will do well, in any class. So stop crying!
Took him in Spring 07. In all fairness, Prof. Nak's swell. Not once late nor absent. Class not easy. Hard work required. You snooze you lose. An "A" or "C" is hard earned and well-deserved. Class drills reading, studying, & Crit thinking. Quality education is what you will get. Be smart, take his challenge.
This is a difficult, but extremely important course for anyone entering the allied health professions, and Dr. Nakamura teaches it according;y. Tough but fair, he is the most brilliant professor offered at this school!
WARNING: the grade you get is what you earn. If you want an easy grade STAY AWAY. If you want to learn or get in the Allied Health field, he's the instructor to take. He is hard, but fair. You have to earn your keep. The class is informative, challenging and labs are fun. READ, ask ?? and seek help if you need it.
Prof.Nakamura, one of the smartest guy I ever met. If you are heading to Nursing or Respiratory Therapy!!!You should take him.
He is extremely knowledgable and fair. He will always take extra time to explain himself, before, during, and after class if you need help. The labs are interesting and fun. He is tough but great. He has many family memebers in the Nursing field and tells it like it is. If you don't like him, you should reconsider going into the healthcare field.
I've just began the class. So far he seems to be a good professor. Microbiology isn't an easy class no matter what professor you take. So of course this class isn't going to be a breeze. If you work hard you'll do well regardless of the instructer. The first quiz I took last week was fairly easy!
Difficult course, but wonderful teacher. Don't expect to get out early because he makes use of EVERY SINGLE minute! He's tough, but fair. Dr. Nak really knows his stuff and will take time to make sure that each student has a full understanding of the material. Great instructor, but very challenging course!
Dr. Nakamura is a very difficult professor, but he is fair. He completely covers all material and offers as much assistance as he can possibly give. If you are not willing to work hard, this class and Dr. Nakamura are not for you. The material is very time consuming but if you work hard, you will do well.He is one of my all-time favorite professors
Dr. Nakamura is a tough teacher(he's just preparing you for whats to come later) This class is a lot of hard work, but soooooo beneficial and you'll be thanking him later on, *if you ever take his class. I still remember a lot of the things he taught, and if it wasn't for him, I'd have a hard time with my present class right now.
This was my first non A. However, I would trade all my science A's for B's if I could walk away with the knowledge I gained from this class. Be methodical and use his notes while reading the book. Take your time in Lab-most people like to rush out- ask questions. THIS CLASS IS A MUST FOR RN's & RT's!
Dr. Nakamura is a professor that cares for his students! Microbiology is a tough subject and dont assume that this class will be an easy A. Dr. Nakamura will push his students to their limit. He is tough... He is training students to be ready for a nursing career. Take his classes if you want to be successful. PUSH! PUSH! PUSH!
Dr. Nakamura is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He takes a genuine interest in his students and really wants you to succeed. Do ALL the reading before lecture, study hard and see him for any questions and you can do well in his class. You will leave with a great foundationn of knowledge to build on for a career in the medical field.
Dr. Nak is great. He wants everyone to do well in nursing but doesnt hand out the easy grades. If youre borderline, he wont give you the better grade. Difficult subject but very interesting. Just read the chapter before class because he gives random quizzes and I suggest recording his lectures-really helped me out.
Great teacher, hard subject read before class and don't be late he gives quizzes at the start of class! He really cares for his students. People that gave him a bad rating, were and are probably are LAZY!
I just don't agree with his grading system. I think it's non-realistic. I had better teachers in the past whom I feel really cared for their students. I would still say that he is good with what he is teaching but I just can't get over his non-realistic grading system.
This guy is really inteligent, he has a lot of knowledge in Biology and really knows what he is doing. I currently take Journal reading with him and I really enjoy it. the first 2 meetings were hard but he helps out and makes sure you understand what you read. Very helpful for further University experience in reading scientific papers. Recommended.
Dr. Nak is not the easiest teacher, but not the hardest either. I know that people are intimidated by him, but if you're willing to study just as in Anatomy and Physiology you'll never be in danger of not passing. Pop quizzes. There is opportunity for extra credit on every one of them and the tests. READ the text. STUDY his notes. He's a good prof.
Currently a nursing student..I have to say with what I'm going through in Nursing school..work in this class is about 1/32 of what you'll be going through..He's a great teacher..I still use what I've learned in this class..don't forget it..it's crucial..He's very knowledgeable. Read the book, the guide, concepts and ull be fine
For those who need to be coddled in their classes, ie. a study guide, preparedness, etc. this is not the class for you. All the preparedness you need is to READ, go to class, pay attention, READ, and READ!!! He may seem standoffish, but he isnt at all! He's an excellent teacher, and an astounding mentor. All of your efforts will be tested here!
This professor is so full of himself, the fist hour of every class all he talks about is how "this is not high school" and about himself. He is very rude.
Was taking this class along with Anatomy, and working p/t. Just checked my grade and I received a C, BUT I earned the grade. This is one of the most interesting classes you can take. Nakamura is an amazing professor, and VERY thorough and REALISTIC. Not a class to take if you're going to slack off. I wish I did better.
Dr. Nak has got to be the hardest teacher I ever had but don't be scared. I got a B! I do not regret taking his class because now i feel stronger and more prepared to face any challenge. This is where all your efforts will be tested!! If you decide to be in this class, you better be serious and give more than 100%. You can do it!!
All I gotta say is that if you take this class you'll come out stronger and be more ready for life. Dr. Nak's gotta be the hardest ever but thats what makes you get out of your comfort zone and push yourself!! Dont be a lil scaredy cat!! You get what you put into this and it's all fair. Give more than 100% and you'll be fine. NO MERCY!! rawrr!!!
If you love sciences, this is the class for you. If you struggle and have questions, please know that this professor is not the person who will help you. Find help elsewhere. A teacher who forgot what the word "teach" meant. Wants to weed out people, however thats not teaching. Regardless, these are tough classes. Work hard, get extra help.
Difficult class, but if you come to class and work hard, you'll learn a lot. He's a really intelligent guy, provides outlines (which has most of the test material). I'm a nursing major, got an A, and he was one of my favorite teachers :) Sciencetastic class.
He is very intelligent and serious about his field. I left his class prepared with an outstanding knowledge of microbiology. His class made the State exam easy to pass and I will always be grateful for all he thought me. A true scientist with a gift for teaching the subject.
You need to read the book. Quizzes come right from the chpts and are easy points. Dr. Nak EXPECTS you to work hard and study. Get in the lab and look at the slides! I took his class Spring 2011 and received an A. I recently passed my TEAS V exam which had a lot of Micro material. I start nursing school at COC this Spring. Thanks Dr. Nak!
Nakamura is a spectacular professor, he REALLY knows his stuff! Yes, his class is tough, he gives many quizes and he pushes you. You really have to stay ontop of your studying. However, he provides outlines and if you read the book you will do just fine. He also offers several chances for extra credit. A professor I will continue to thank!
Dr. Nak is by far one of the best teachers I have had. I am an honors student but he gave me a challenge (all semester)!! I came out with a B but I earned it. Don't over study, test are easier than you think.Read the book,go to class, & record his lecture!Good luck!
Health Science majors rejoice! This professor is the real deal. He will give you a foundation in Microbiology that is unparalleled @ LAVC. The course is structured to teach the information you'll need to know in a hospital setting. Put in the hard work and reap the rewards. Wished more professors challenged us the way he did; still an easy class.
This professor is probably the most difficult I have ever taken. You HAVE to go to class and read the book because he gives quizzes on the material ahead to keep you prepared. His exams are not that difficult once you study and understand the material. If you are a health major (Nursing, RVT, etc), this is the class for you! Record his lectures!
This class makes you work hard, but Dr Nak makes the material interesting. He was great about explaining things when students had questions. Lab is a lot of fun.
Hes a tough professor, gives you quizzes on material ahead which forces you to read ahead. His tests are fairly easy, but you do have to understand the material. He is helpful and tries to answer all your questions. His lab tests are harder than his lecture so make sure you pay attention to detail! Good luck!
Horrible. Doesn't help. Simply says to pay attention in class and go to the website. If you missed what he said in class and if it's not on his website, you're screwed. Syllabus is not organized and doesn't help. This is a go with the flow instructor with no information regarding upcoming assignments.
Absol. horrible professor! Disorganized and extremely confusing! Students are not aware what exactly to study for to prepare for the exams and quizzes! When students are asking questions in class, he never really explains anything in detail! RUDE AND HARSH WITH THE STUDENTS. ONCE HE REALIZES HE IS RUDE, THEN HE APOLOGIZES FOR HIS BEHAVIOR.
Terrible professor. Thinks he is the best professor alive and takes up beef with other professors. tests are confusing and lectures make me fall asleep. He runs the class like a dictator and rarely helps students
I thought he was a great professor, when I initially signed up for micro I was terrified by the reviews saying that he is tough, after completing the course I must disagree with that. I learned a lot of things in his class. Tests are straightforward if you attend lecture, take notes, and read the text you should be fine.
Being sarcastic and rude is probably part of his personality. He did not teach my Micro20 section but I took the mock lab exam he conducted for Micro20 students from all sections. One student asked about Enterotube color changes and Enterobacteria. Answers from Nakamura - "Because I said so", "Where did you learn this?", and "Who is your teacher?".
Awesome professor. He has high expectations for his students because he wants them to succeed as healthcare professionals. If you are a slacker or if you're spoon-fed, stay away. You can't handle this class. ;)
Obviously, this professor knows his stuff. However, his teaching style seems to be "every question is a stupid question". It makes for a confusing learning environment since you're never quite sure if he's asking a trick question (which he does a lot) or if he's asking a real one. Knowledge he's got, what he lacks are supportive teaching skills.
He is a great professor! His lectures are clear; if you have any question you better ask when he asks for them. READ!READ! AND READ! That's what will prepare you for his exam as and quizes, and he is very clear about that. Also, PAY ATTENTION TO HIS INSTRUCTIONS. You will learn a lot if you really want to lear, or not. You will decide your grde.
Reviews are pretty accurate. The prof knows his material so that's a plus. But he's a condescending teacher. Students don't engage in class because there's no real encouragement if right, and they could be put on blast if wrong so the risk/reward is obviously not there. He then wonders why no one goes to office hours after people bomb exams lol.
By far,my fave class ever taken. He will prepare u immensely towards your health career. AMAZING LECTURES. Very inspiring. A master at the subject. But WARNING, if u are not willing to put in days of your week reading/studying, this class is not for u. Record his lectures, what he says is EVERYTHING!Put in the work, and u will gain so much from it.
Absolutely amazing professor. Difficult, because students don't like to read the book. But you HAVE to read the book, PRIOR to attending every lecture! There are pop quizzes! Pay attention! Exams are straightforward; syllabus and schedule are nicely outlined; accessible during office hours; WANTS STUDENTS TO SUCCEED! Thank you, Dr. Nakamura.
I took Dr. Nak's Micro this fall and if you come to this class thinking that studying the notes day or two before the test is enough then you're mistaken. You NEED to read the book or else you will not get A. Dr. Nakamura may seem scary and unapproachable but he is kind and he cares for his students to succeed for the sake of our health careers.
Microbiology is already a hard subject but this professor makes it even harder. Pop quiz every week (twice or 3x a week) so attendance is mandatory. No study guides provided. His test is based on the textbook so you have to know every word and every corner of the textbook forward and backward. Take micro with someone else if possible.
Microbiology is hard in general, keep that in mind when taking his class. Dr. Nakamura knows his stuff. Studied mostly through notes. Hardest science class I've had. Don't be late; if you plan on becoming a medical professional, you'll appreciate his method of teaching as teaches you how microbiology applies in real life situations.
Took Dr. Nak last spring and he knows his stuff. He is very intelligent and caring. He may seem at time unapproachable but he really does want to help and has a great way of teaching. He is tough but is preparing you for your healthcare profession. Go to class, ask questions, and READ THE BOOK prior to class. I truly enjoyed micro with him. :)
He was in such a rush we were light years ahead than other micro classes in the department. didnt have enough time to get comfortable with the material before being tested on it. Avoid if you can. Labs are confusing. Spends most of the time talking and doesnt leave enough time for the lab itself. Wording on exams are confusing and very tricky.
Took Dr. Nakamura Spring 2020. Dr. Nak knows the material very well since he has a biology profession background. He is very helpful outside of class and responds to emails as quick as possible. Going through COVID and shifting to online was stressful and frustrating, however, Dr. Nak made it as comfortable as possible. Great Professor!!!
The professor is very nice but that's about it. He doesn't accommodate to specific needs and always has pop quizzes before class. Sometimes homework is due at the start of class or sometimes after. You only have 3 minutes to submit homework. The lectures are heavy and the class only relies on tests. Also uses Proctorio which is a complete invasion.
Don't be late, try your best to be punctual because he does not like that. He is a good teacher, I wish I took his class more seriously back then
Took all online Micro with Dr. Nak. He is incredibly rigid and wants this class to run exactly like an in person class with little flexibility. He gives pop up quizzes so you have to know the chapter in extreme detail to answer the questions on the quiz. Test require deep knowledge of the book, all lectures, and extra notes. Would not recommend.
Great professor but you definitely got to put in the time/work. Lectures were very interesting & lab was fun but count on having a pop quiz every week. He only counts your best 10 though so it helps your grade in the end & prepares you for exams.
Micro with Dr. Nak is tough, but engaging. Attend lectures, read the textbook, and try Unstuck ai for study prep. It's a lot of work, but you'll learn a lot. Solid professor overall.
