usually teaches grad classes.simply awesome professor.
one of the best professors in Baruch. His class was really interesting. He makes really difficult meanings easy to understand.

Makes Stats so much fun. great professor. One of a kind among boring professors @ Baruch
One of the Best at Baruch. Makes stats fun and interesting with M&M examples. Just study his notes and come to class and you will do fine. Very funny guy. Wish more professors were like him.
The TATER is the man!
Simply the best professor in Baruch! Very interesting lectures and his tests are very similar with the review exams he posts.
Makes stats interesting. Didn't think it was possible.
AWESOME. One of the best professors in my life. He is unbelievable. Makes stats as fun as it can be! A MUST TAKE.
He was one of the best math-related teachers I have ever taken in my life. Engaging, dedicated, compassionate, thoughtful - really what a professor should be. Taking his class really made me feel like I was learning AND getting my money's worth. A definite "Must take" teacher.
Tatum actually cares that you understand the material, so he makes Statistics fun. I have often referred back to his handouts both in subsequent classes and in the real world. A definite must!
Excellent prof.! Very funny guy. Relates extremely well to students, wants you to learn and applies material to real world situation so it has more meaning and easier to understand. Definite thumbs up!
Great teacher, breaks it down and leads his students gently.
The greatest STAT prof in Baruch. Makes stats easy to understand, extremely helpful to students. He actually wants you to understand the material and breaks everything down so that even kids will understand it. A+ teacher.
Best teacher I've had at Baruch. Sonehow, he makes statisitcs a class to look forward to.
He makes the class very interesting. He definetly knows his stuff. Exams are very simillar with the homework, but they are not easy. One of the best teachers at Baruch
if you dont like this guy's teaching, then you actually want to be spoonfed.never met a prof who makes stats so easy to understand.tatum, u rock..lame jokes though...lol..
Professor Tatum is an excellent researcher and a great teacher in terms of clearly explaining topics. The only problem is that he spent so much time teaching MBAs that he got use to moving through material at a really slow pace. You won't cover much ground in his class but you'll be crystal clear on everything you do cover.
Prof Tatum has a great teaching personality. Class is conceptually fascinating. Subject is difficult even if you've had it before. He relates to real world situations! But there is disconnect with needs of students and can't think on his feet. overshoots explanations when he tries to answer questions, making them more confusiong. overall
Good, funny professor. But if you are used to corresponding via email to professors, don't get your hopes up. Also, office hours are usually when we are still at work. However, if you can study on your own, you'll do fine.
Prof Tatum is an intelligent, comprehendible, and thorough instructor. I strongly suggest you take his class, you will not be disappointed.
Great Prof. Funny, knowledgeable. Definately recommend him!!
Really, truly the best professor I have had in two years at Baruch. Funny, kind, supportive - everything a teacher should be. I wish he taught other subjects!
He is an excellent professor who conveys difficult material in an interesting fashion. He is thorough in explaining material, even though he sometimes goes beyond the scope of the class. His exams are very fair. My only knock on him would be he is difficult to reach out of class.
Great teacher, makes the subject fun and very understandable, very straight forward exams too.
One of the best teachers I have had. Really understands what he is teaching and makes the class interesting
One of the best professors ever - buying the textbook is optional, but with his notes, you will never need to look at a Stats Textbook to understand concepts - take him if you can!
Professor Tatum is one of the best professors. Makes stats interesting. He is really funny, you will laugh in every class. He explains everything in simple terms. Don't buy the book he gives you his own notes to download. There are weekly HWs but they are graded for effort only not on correctness. You will learn alot by doing them anyway.
He is just plain hilarious! He picks on people (by seating usually) to answer homework questions and other questions he asks, so be on your toes. Material can be hard to understand but not his fault. He's not available via email (by choice I assume), which is a downer.
He's a very good teacher - the material is extremely hard but he makes it fun and interesting. He doesn't take attendance, but there is a lot of homework (which we don't know if he really counts or not). They do help with the tests though. No need to buy txtbk; all his notes are on blackboard. He makes stat fun, if that is even possible!
Best Professor!!
Best teacher I probably had in my life, and I've had a lot of teachers. I really hated stats before him, but I actually like it. Unlike most teachers, he actually cares if people learn, and if you come to class, read his notes, you'll get an A. No textbook necessary!
Greatest statistics professor you will ever have. NO other statitics teacher can make an otherwise boring and complicated subject more interesting and less complex. Great guy, great personality. If you do the homework and come to class you will get a good grade. He doesn't use the book and gives you his own notes which are much easier to read.
I know Tatum's a great professor because I can remember many of his stories. What an interesting character! Very fair grader, but he keeps the class on their toes by randomly calling on people. Exams & hws were fair. He taught me the basics of Excel. Tatum sincerely wants his students to learn & appreciate that Stats is not an easy subject.
Lectures are in French meaning you wont understand what he is saying. Most likely you are going to loose him after very first lecture and never again be able to catch up with him. Doesn’t use a text book, so you do save some money. The tests are pretty fair but you have to prepare for the exam on your own from the review sheet. Do your home work on
I don't know what these people are on that say he's the best professor ever. I lost him after the first few lectures. He doesn't explain anything and thinks grad students should read everything on their own and just come to class with questions. He is a wacko, a marker sniffer, and I can't stand him. If there's someone else, take them instead.
You need to do the homeworks, that's the only way to understand the lesson. He's very fair in grading homeworks and exams. If you put in the efforts, you won't be dissapointed. He's available outside the class. You can even discuss about homework in his office. I definitely recommend him.
ripoff artist actually says on the second day of class that he feels undergrads should be taught but master's students can teach themselves. so therefore, he doesn't teach & doesn't earn his pay. easy A if u just do the hw's over & over. he handed out an incomplete study guide that i relied on so of course, i didn't get an A.

AVOID HIM. He's hands down the most frustrating professor. When asked direct questions on concepts his usual response is to reread his notes, before proceeding to share anecdotes completely unrelated to class. He's also fond of answering questions with questions, and as a result a majority of the class suffered on exams.
The guy is nice and funny, but not clear on the concepts or formulas. He expects grad students to know it all! the exams are hard but very similar to homework. no cheat sheet allowed. does give a review sheet but too much material. does not take attendance. overall he's a good guy but has a strange teaching style!
Nice professor.Knows his stuff.People who grade him bad are just giving reasons for their inability. His exmr r easy and supercool. He explains stuff and gives a Question Bank too. What else do u need?He expects evry student to get full and just deducts marks wherevr necessary. He is lineant and nice guy. Take him.Easy A
VERY INTELLECTUAL PROF. VERY HELPFUL. THOSE WITH NO PREVIOUS STATS BACKGROUND WILL FIND HIM DIFF. WORTH TAKING HIS CLASS. VERY GOOD SENSE OF HUMOUR. CLASS ASSIGNMENTS HELPFUL. TALES STRICT ACTION AGAINST PLAGIARISM. TAKE THIS PROF.
The way he grades is weird He teaches these weird concept that are very theoretical and yes he deducts points when you don't phrase the concept the way he does Basically you have to record him and memorize the way he recites I got an A-, but I graduated from Standfo w engine deg. I will say 80% of the class were totally lost and didn't have a clue.
No idea what he blabbed about all term. No idea how he goes about grading essay tests. Some people got -2 others got -10 for the same error. Didn't clarify any material in class, his lecture notes sucked, no textbook.
You have no idea what the heck he's talking about in class. All you know is that this guy is smart and LOVES statistics. Exams are very similar to his homework and the problems printed on his handouts. Nothing tricky. Just make sure you do the homework diligently and try to follow what's going on in class, you'll get an A. A lot of MS Excel work.
He made it very interesting, and I was dreading stats. Take his class, you will learn. Yes, you will need to do a lot of work, but this is grad school--what did you expect?
This is a mandatory core class. If you are dying to learn stats you first need to grasp Tatum?s style of material delivery. Then you may proceed onto killing yourself though the entire term, never gaining any clue at the end. Or take a different prof. and learn this ?exciting? subject just enough to use it in the real business world - you choose.
Blah, blah, blah. Please teach something. Tangents every two seconds. Incoherent rambling. Hooray! My most useless class ever.
He is a very very good teacher and if the rest of my teachers are on par with him I will be very happy. He is humorous, challenging and intellectual. What else do you want in a teacher? Anyone else who disagrees doesn't want to work for their degree.
Great class- Professor Tatum made a normally dry subject fun and interesting. The subject matter is not easy but if you work hard and keep up with the reading and the homeworks, you will be rewarded with a good grade and you will actually learn something. If you want an easy A, dont take this class.
Excellent professor. He is probably the best teacher I have had. He really teaches and cares that everyone understands the topic. He expects hard work in return. It is definitely not an easy A but it is rewarding if you do well.
Once you get used to Prof. Tatum's socratic teaching method and weekly homework assignment and quizzes, you will leave the course with a newfound understanding of "hard work". He's a fair grader and sincerely wants his students to understand Statistics. It was not an easy course but I learned alot! Highly recommended.
Good Professor. He knows Stats very well and explains well with real-life examples. But he tends to get caught in unrelated stories. But he's very funny and makes the session fly. Just tell him to get back on topic and he's the best professor.
He is a great statistician. He prepares his own textbook so you don't need to buy one. He explains Statistics with real life examples and makes the course fun. But if you don't have time to study, then don't take him. This class requires a lot of hard work.
Teaches from his own notes. Which are very complex and hard to understand. He's taking Stats to the next level so only take him if you know Stats and have time to do 8 hours of HW a week.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Try to get someone else if you can. You will learn the material because you have to self-study like crazy. Makes his own notes which are vague. Gives the toughest homeworks every week. Expect to spend at least 12 hrs a week for the class. He curves exams bec everybody will fail if he doesnt.
this class is hard b/c he writes all of the notes himself (no textbook) and he expects everyone to understand his take on the subject. tests are tricky b/c they are mostly essay format. however, he does curve. lots of homework; expect to do 2-4 hours of hw per week. he's kind of funny, in a weird way, but he's a nice guy
I am writing this review because I am graduating and Prof Tatum was one of the best, if not the best, professors I took while getting my MBA. He is extremely passionate about the material, and as hard as the class is, with his enthusiasm you can not help but get into the material. Take this class, you will not regret the experience.
Professor Tatum is very passionate about statistics - which is a good thing. The caveat with this class is that it requires a LOT of time and effort. Do not take this class unless you can devote at least 8 hours per week to read the material and do the weekly homework assignments.
Pros: Extremely knowledgeable. Cons: tends to veer off track with course materials; be prepared to be drowned in statistical theory; needs to be more organized; feedback from assignments was spotty at best.
if there is any final project make sure to write a PHD standard thesis otherwise you will get B although you have excellent class performance . not at all organized total waste of time unless you learn SAS yourself. employer will test your SAS skills. they dont care how you interpret stat theory which he give most emphasis on. avoid at all cost
Be Careful with this Professor. He expects you to know the material as if you are a PHD student. Even if you devote 8 hours per week on his class, there is no guarantee that you will get an A. It is very hard to understand what he is really looking for in his exams and projects.
No sure where we are heading to. Too much homework which he doesn't provide exact answers.
This is the worst teacher ever. granted he is passionate about stat but he can't teach AT ALL. don't bother looking, the other stat prof r worse. too disorganize and makes too many mistakes so can't figure out which is right. confused to no tomorrow. doesn't give note ahead of time and jsut dives into the notes in class.praying to pass.
I am sure that this professor will remain a fossil here - He has tenure. Refuses to give feedback on assignments any time soon. DISORGANIZED, ARROGANT and of very little help. Be afraid, be very afraid!
Bottom line: Interesting lectures at times, but the (tons of)effort you put into this course will not be reflected on the exams nor on the grade.
Very good "textbook" notes which he writes himself. If you read the notes you can do well on the exams. No need to attend all the classes. Recommended compared to all other Stat professors!
Please don't take this professor. I agree, he is arrogant and he uses his own notes but recommends a text which he gets mad if you refer to. His notes do have grammatical errors. The department should get an editor or a proof reader for him because if you don't get confuse from his lecture, his notes will definitely get you there.
Professor Tatum is AMAZING. He is a teacher who really makes an effort to try to explain this hard subject to students in clear way. IF u need to take this class, Must be with him. Stat is a hard subject, but he writes the lectures and really explain things easier than any other textbook. But u have to study and do HW's. If u do u can get an A. :)
STAT is a hard subject and he makes it fun, interesting and in tops, he want u to UNDERSTAND..very funny lecture notes....Excellent teacher.
Don't take this professor. He was one of the hardest professor's that could not teach and made no sense. His notes were terrible and I actually understand stats pretty well and still couldn't understand him. Talks too much about himself and family in class. I had to drop him because he was so hard and made wasn't clear at all. Learned nothing.
2 midterms,1 final.Homework submissions for each chapter. Homeworks were very helpful as the exams were based on them.No textbooks.Read the notes and homework solutions for the exams. He tries to make a tough subject easy for the class though at times it gets confusing.I enjoyed his class and especially the notes! Got an A. Recommended.
Disappointed. While he is a great thinker and gives compelling examples, his attitude towards this class is best characterized as insolent: disorganized, frequently unprepared. Hours of HW, yet NO feedback. Tells us how smart his daughters and NYU students are. He is the best game in town, so I'll stick to him....but that DOESN'T make him great.
One of the best professors I've ever had. His class caused me to pursue Statistics as a major. Definitively pick him if you get a chance
I receieved a good grade but felt this class was a waste of time since he goes off topic.I had to buy a review book and learn this topic mysef.I suggest taking another professor for stats.
Great Teacher. Has his own notes, no need to buy a textbook. Very clear and understandable. Tests and HW very fair.
Loved this guy. 6 years later, I still remember his MBA stats course
He taught Statistic class at Stern. What a wreck! He has good ideas but struggles to put them across. The whole class struggled to get what he was saying and in the end, focused on the textbook. He did not even provided graded final papers to those who challenged their grades.
i would NOT recommend this professor at all, most of all if you are not familiar with stats. Very disorganized, do not provide feedback to (weekly!) homework and often doesn t even answer questions. Instead, he ll tell you funny stories about him, his Nyu students and his daughters.
Smart guy, but very disorganized and not a very good teacher. If you don't already know stats you will fail/drop this class.
Very smart professor. No textbook but uses his own lecture notes. HWs due weekly based on his lecture notes. 2 Midterms and 1 Final practically mirrors the HW problems. Sometimes it feels like he is spoon feeding the material to students. He tends to go off topic and tells irrelevant stories.
2 midterms,1 final + HW every week. No textbook, only his lecture notes. Think of the HWs and lecture notes as serious prep for exams, because the tests are directly from HWs. He is very funny and makes Stats interesting. I recommend going to class even though not mandatory. Randomly calls on people to answer questions from the HW. EZ A!
You will learning nothing from this instructor, so do yourself a favor and read the textbook. He never finished a concept that he started, or continuously interjected unrelated topics; at the end, you forgot what he was talking about and so did he. You might be able to get a good grade, but I almost guarantee it, you'll not learn stat
Why do people find him funny? He tells lame jokes, talks about his children and his NYU students and rambles on about nothing in class while we teach ourselves the material at home. His only saving grace are his lecture notes. I learned everything from the notes. Not from his lectures. Skip lecture, read notes.
Terrible. Spends most of the class talking about NYU or his family. When he finally tries to lecture on the material, nobody understands him. No need for the book, just read his lecture notes on blackboard. It's a self-study class as you won't learn anything from him. 3-5 hours a week for hw. Curves final grade about 7 pts.
He is a terrible teacher. His lessons are unclear and when someone asks him a question in class, he never seems to answer it in a direct and clear way. HE has his own notes that you study from which is really unhelpful if you can't understand him in class since the notes are in the same long wordy unclear manner that he teaches. Avoid if possible
I found him funny, approachable, and helpful. His notes are expansive but you must sift through them for the important points. Take good lecture notes and you will be fine. Gives you review sheets for exams. Do not be afraid to ask questions. Study his review and notes, show effort on HW and you will get an A.
Prof. Tatum is sometimes difficult to follow along with - because of the volume of the material - but he more than makes up for this with an eagerness to help students and his passion for the material.
PERSEVERE with BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS. if you get him, you will have to do homework every week, and you have to sift through his lecture notes like an investigative reporter. You will dream of his concepts, but he means well. the most demanding and difficult class ive taken so far. Is it worth it? You will appreciate it at the end.
This is his style: his notes are very long and full of his thinking and words. Homework every week but give feedback very late. He doesn't teach stat in class but talks about his life.He expects you to read his notes on your own and come to class to hand in your homework and listen to his story.Exam is very weird.Try your best to avoid it.
You will learn very little from his class. The skills and knowledge you learned can barely be used in your future career or study. Try you best to avoid.
MBA students should avoid this class, it's a PHD level. You will not learn how to apply regression but you will learn derivatives. Too many homework's, one project and two exams … The prof. is intelligent but most of the student find it hard to keep up with what he teaches in class. Good luck!
Very confusing. Cannot communicate to the common student. This class has become the defacto mandatory MBA class, but it is not designed for MBAs. Tatum admits that the class is very taxing for MBAs, as it's designed for Master's of Statistics students. I'm could not be happier that this class is finally over.
This is a self-taught class, don't buy the textbook. Must skim through his lecture notes to pinpoint useful info. Attending class was useless. He spends 3/4 of the class displaying students' HWs. HW due weekly, takes 3-5 hrs each. 2 exams (instead of 3), 1 project. My final grade was in the 50s and I ended up with a B-.
The majority of his material is provided through LENGTHY lecture notes that you'll likely have to read and re-read to gain anything from. Tatum is one of those teachers who'll ask you a question in class and you'll have no idea what sort of response he's looking for. Unfortunately this applies to exams as well.
I found Prof. Tatum very helpful as well as entertaining. He thoroughly covers the different topics in course notes that he types up for weekly readings. He doesn't cover everything from the readings in his lectures but expects you to know it for exams; in class he will cover things from the readings that trip people up. i learned a ton. great prof
My advice is do not take this class. Weekly HW, requires hours on hours of work. Lectures are useless, unclear, you find yourself so lost that you cannot be found again. End state, a lot of work, 0 learning.
Very nice and knowledgeable professor. You WILL learn useful statistical theories as well as how to apply with Excel graphing technique. You will need A LOT of self-study in order to complete his HWs. Worked and tried very hard but still couldn't get an A.
amazing teacher, hard subject ,learned so much from this class, strongly recommend
Terrible lectures that ramble all over the place. Lecture notestests provided are not always clear and take a lot of timeself study to discern topics that should be fairly basic. Not nearly enough excel integration into the class for the topic. A waste of money and time.
Prof Tatum is a very enthusiastic professor and his teaching style fosters deep learning of the subject. His lecture notes are the best I've ever seen. His project serves as a great work sample to be shown on interviews.
I really enjoyed the professor's enthusiasm for the course. He is very entertaining and also has some interesting insights. He writes his own lecture notes that the course and tests are based on. Long homework assignments every week. You will do well by memorizing his notes. I also recommend buying the suggested text book to clarify topics.
Great professor. Prompted me to enjoy statistics so much more. I had a fear of statistics prior to this class, but after taking it I actually understood the real-life implications and uses of statistical analysis, not just plugging in numbers to formulas. Very passionate professor who knows a lot about statistics. The most useful class I've taken!
the best prof. in Baruch
This class is really useful. Lectures are long but informative.
I must say, he is among the few professors who knows how to teach. Focusing on the most basic but important things that a stat student should understand. I really enjoy his class.
So lucky I got a great professor for a hard course. You don't need a textbook, he writes all of his own notes. There's hw every week, but if you do the hw and study from it you can do well in his class. He's a very fair and lenient grader. Would definitely take another stats course with him.
do homeworks, study (memorize) the practice exam and you'll do fine. Project was easy.
very heavy on hw's, if you lack time then plan ahead, a lot of hw's. Also, he tends to talk too much nonsense other than the class itself. You may collect his notes and do the hw without even attending class.
Professor Tatum is an amazing teacher. He prepares his own lecture and tries to answer all question you have. This course will make sure that you learn the materials.
Tatum is great! He spend lots of time preparing his own lecture material and is very passionate about the material. He'll stay hours after to class to explain a concept. There is homework every week and they can be tough but he wants to see that you've put in the effort. Learned alot from this class and I am definitely considering taking him again.
This teacher really wants you to LEARN statistics, and he does try to teach it in a way you can apply it to business. His tests are difficult though - no multiple choice, no notes, very easy to get points taken off. There is no text book, he provides you with his own notes, but it's very helpful to go to the lectures as well
He is a nice and polite gentlemen who speaks softly in the cold air-con small classroom(makes me feel sleepy). The way he deliver the lecture is abstract and philosophical and its hard for who are taking the STA for the first time to comprehend. Instructions of know-how for HW is not clear, I have to look up a lot of youtube tutorials.
Great experience with him. Detailed lectures with notes provided; not boring, often funny. He understands that STA is not easy so his lectures, HW and tests are all connected; do the HW and tests will be good. Generous curve; mid-80s to A-. If you feel lost/overwhelmed at start like I did, thats ok; read his notes, ask, and find your footing.
Be careful with this Professor. Very confusing with grades and you won't find out how you are pacing until it's very late. Not an easy A at all or even A-. Do not recommend.
Good: he never ask u to buy testbook. Provides his own notes, which is helpful cuz I rarely understood what he talk bout (way too fast & hard for foreign student) Cons: Very hard HW. Very hard A-. I took his 2 classes (includin CIS9660) and got 2 B+!! He so strict on grading!! You loose point for grammar error! Make u explain a lot in an STA exam!
Ok so I am taking the STAT9700 at Baruch college. For the first two lectures, it was very inspirational and informative, however, from the third class, I feel the quality is falling significantly. If I rate the quality, I would say for the past four lectures, they were 10, 12(was great), 3, 5, out of 10. Hopefully he could come back the track soon.
I took STA2000 with him over the summer. Now, I will say that he is kind of vague and makes you even more confused than you already are, but he gives out these notes that make things better. There is going to be A LOT OF homework, so be ready. But that homework will be very helpful once it is time for a midterm and final. He gives good reviews too.
He made me fall in love with statistics. Its important in business and real world was realized with his lectures, assignments and tests. He spends lot of time preparing his detailed lecture notes. I would take his class again and again. Thanks Prof. !
Pros: Very knowledgeable and passionate professor. He is genuinely fascinated by the subject and truly cares about helping his students understand the theory, not just the application. He is extremely patient, receptive to feedback and always willing to help students. Cons: Can get off topic so ask clarifying questions to keep him on track.
BEWARE: This guy does not know how to teach. The lecture notes he provides are essentially your textbook and also what you will have to read over and over again to grasp any of the concepts because he does a very poor job at explaining them in class. He is a nice guy and very funny, but unfortunately it doesn't make up for being bad at his job.
Took him twice for STA9700 & 9710. Oddly relevant life experiences take a great deal of his lecture time. But u'll come out of that classroom knowing something that matters! Prof Tatum is humble and gets how his students think. The struggle is real and he knows it! On the down side little individual feedback and sometimes he'd dodge questions.
Every lecture with this professor always made me leave the class daydreaming about the possibilities of our topic. He is devout and visibly passionate about everything he teaches and a real pleasure to listen to. Tatum will help you personally if you seek him and he may go on a starstruck ramble if he gets off track, but that's one of his strengths
He is such a nice man. He goes off on tangents sometimes but he is a great teacher. His tests are very straightforward (just a midterm and a final) and he gave us examples of old tests and test solutions to practice with. The homework is graded out of 10 and he will give you a 10 as long as you attempt every question. I recommend him to my friends.
His notes are lenthgy and annoying. His stories are not funny at all.
He doesn't know how to teach. His lectures are boring and distracting. By all means to avoid this lecturer.
His notes are so annoying and time consuming.
His lecture is very clear. But you never know what he wants for your homework. You will never be on the right track because he doesn't give useful feedback. He drops points because he doesn't like your graphics although it was what you got from the software. He doesn't give clear rubrics for grading. And the software he used is outdated.
The professor doesn't give any useful feedback on the homework that weights a lot in this course. You cannot even get in touch with him because he said " no email". If you didn't have a very strong IT and math background, I would say that you'd better don't take his class. You can go to data camp and learn yourself here.
It's almost as if I spent the whole class paraphrasing his notes and not learning a single thing. If you're good at this then you'll get a good grade, but if you want to learn then you're better off going to someone else. I'm not sure what criteria he uses to grade, but I ended up on the good side of it somehow.
Great Professor. He is taught me the most interesting and useful courses of all times. Highly recommend him for Data Science/ Stats
I love him as a person. Amazing human being, very caring, very intelligent and kind-heart. But, this course is difficult enough not to make it extra confusing. Although, he really tries his best - writes down all the notes by himself and we study from there. The notes are wordy and heavy. He does not fail anybody. You can get B. or even A
If your math is shaky, I'm hesitant in suggesting him. Coming from a STEM (calculus / engr) background, I understood the material better than others, putting a lot of effort in the hw too. LNs are the txtbk, 10 hws (10% total), 1 midterm (45%), and final (50%!). There's no room for error in the tests, and it helps if he knows you. Many did worse!
This is a difficult subject, but he had tried to simplified it as much as possible. No textbook needed. One midterm and final based on his lecture note, he gave practice questions a week before the exams. Lenient grader.
Prof. Tatum is very knowledgable and make us to learn. He gave us free version of pdf textbook, so we don't need to buy it. To let us better understand and absorb, he wrote his own lecture notes to simplify abstract concepts, so we primarily focus on the lecture notes. The only time we really need the textbook as a reference is the final project.
he is VERY boring; its so hard for most people to stay awake. his assignments are ambiguous. it might be hard to keep up.
Nice smart guy but cant teach. I love math and couldnt understand what he was saying tho we only went over basic standard dev stuff. Useless textbook and no way to study ahead of class. He writes as he speaks, litteraly, so hard to read his notes. Tries to teach Excel but he is not good at it. Avoid if u can, every student I know feels the same.
It was an extremely tough course. You have to study a lot.
The worst professor I have ever taken: 1. Half of the lecture he was talking about his personal life stories - often forgot how to justify a theory in the middle and just left it unknown 2. He required us to have a specific type calculator for the final and keep mentioning it since the first class, but we don't even need a calculator in the exam
He can't teach for the life of me. All he did was talk about his master's students and his time as a professor at NYU. I've had to go to SACC multiple times and his exams are 3-5 open ended questions that are way too difficult since he tends to go off topic most of the time. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Not prepared for classes, improvises. Tells stories throughout the semester, then bombards you with specific/difficult exam questions, and totally skips the essentials of stats in exams. Not satisfied with my final grade.
THE WORST professor I ever met. He enjoyed himself very much in the class. Very often said, " When I was in my Ph.D., my professor ....." Then boring and silly stories came from his mouth. He never prepared his lectures. When he started his long and boring notes, he always seemed fascinated by it while we had no idea what is going on. Stupid!
Study and understand the detailed answers he's looking for on tests. If you do the homework, practice tests and study you'll be fine. Lectures are boring and he does re-write his notes during class, but he's not terrible.
Although he goes off topic on every lecture and does not really teach except for repeating the notes he posts, his tests are basically the homework which is really easy. Use his notes to figure out the homework . I did not put a lot of effort in the class and still received an A. He curves up a lot. His study guides are really helpful
Would not recommend him at all. Doesn't teach much after first 2 weeks. Most of the time it is just his PhD stories where he was smarter than his advisers. He also doesn't care about his students. Once I went visited him during his office hours and he just shoo-ed me away.
While the professor is a nice man and appears to care for his students his class structure is impossible. Incredibly unorganized notes and a very unclear grading process. He think's he is an ivy league professor given how self-absorbed his lectures are. If you get stuck in his class spend more time reading the textbook than his notes.
We didn't receive grades for half the semester. A lot of lecture time is wasted on personal story-telling (talking about himself, family, reminiscing, ADD-type stuff), but he makes up for it by providing generous office hours. Wish we had more feedback on submitted work sooner. He's a good guy and will help you if you need it.
He's the type of professor who makes you want to drop out. NEVER ANSWERS EMAILS! Doesn't hold regular office hours and doesn't take appointments. Randomly holds office hours whenever he feels like it. Tons of homework with no guidance. Google everything. 1/8 homeworks graded the day before the semester is over.
He's is just going to waste your time. He doesn't grade anything until the end so you have no clue how to adjust your work. He doesn't reply to anything. All of his material is outdated so you're going to have to learn on your own. He mostly just wastes class time with his stories and complains about his old professors, when he's worst.
I like how I don't have to attend his class and read his lectures by myself. I learned a lot from his class and his lecture notes are super helpful. If you like to attend his class live, be prepare to be bored cause he goes off topics a lot. That's why I rather watch his recorded videos so I can skip the parts where he talked about something else.
I have taken a dozen courses in linear regression and taught would give it another try to brush up my skillset and learn something new. Now many months after I am going through his lecture notes and I can tell you one thing. He is the best regression guy on the planet in terms of explaining complex concepts in layman terms.
I had a chance for a good grade, but due to the busy schedule I missed almost entire final project and still pass the class with decent grade. He makes you work for it . If you follow his lecture ( his recordings, notes) you should be fine. Moreover, you will definitely remember him as a person who help you with your professional development
Definitely, must take for any CIS majors if u want to learn something , he was well prepared for the class, was able to clearly explain even difficult problems. Best transition to remote learning ever(ZOOM).However, huge minus for the length of the course( 5 weeks for CIS/STA) is not enough. Supposed to be 10 weeks.
Disappointed. Too much time wasted on small talk and personal stories. It seemed like he was killing time with irrelevant stories to evade his own disorganized and obsolete notes. We students are respectful, so we listen. The summer course moves quickly, so I give him some credit. Befriend other students and rely heavily on your google skills.
He is awful. His lectures are so boring, student who have interest to learn statistics get bored and he makes it still more difficult. He never graded any assignment till the end. we never know where we stand in this subject at the end he will shock us giving very awkward grades. Final project, I didn't know why he graded that less score for me.
An A in this class is very attainable (I foolishly missed a few classes before the final, hence the B+). He doesn't use a textbook - the homework and test material is sourced from his printed lecture notes. There is one homework assignment per lecture note. Pay attention in class and do the homework. You will earn an A- or A.
Didn't grade a single assignment until the semester was over, which is terrible since assignments are worth 100% of the grade (40%hw 60%project). Spends all semester live-editing his notes, which are great, but cause him to lose focus from the lectures. He talks over student questions. Mentions his PHD every class. Not a good teacher. Avoid him.
Professor Tatum has office hours, but he did not grade any assignments until the semester's end. He didn't always post his lecture notes ahead of time, which was frustrating. I stopped going to class and re-read his lecture notes multiple times in order to pass. If math is not your strong suit like me, be prepared to hire a tutor.
Prof Tatum did not answer questions clearly or not try to answer them, hoping students to solve them later. His notes were a bit wordy and did not give clear cut formulas or explanations. 3-hour class consisted of only 1.5 hr of lecturing and the rest were all group work. There must be a more efficient way of using class time.
He rambles in his lectures and in his lecture notes. He edits his lecture notes while lecturing. You don't know any of your grades until the semester ends. He only gives you 5 minutes during office hours to ask questions. Sometimes he doesn't show up to office hours. He also never answers his emails. Group projects after every lecture. Horrible
Course note is a mess and too long. No final exam only final project. Not grading anything till last minute(maybe random assigning grades even to meet ddl). Talk irrelevant things quite often during class. Not responsible at all, always dodging questions and work to do.
Rambling lectures are tangential to material, mostly self taught class. Lectures still have value. Tatum got lazy as semester progressed and didn't upload lecture notes until class was starting. Grades everything in the last week. For the project, just write 30 pages and make a nice table of contents, he won't read it. Grades all from a quick look.
Grading assignments til the last week without any feedback, you don't have a chance to know the direction for your final project. I had two graduate level and two undergraduate econometrica, and advance statistics before. Most of his material are basic for me, but I got an awkward grade. Don't know how to meet his criteria. Avoid him if you can.
This class taught me a lot. Be prepared to read ahead of class with his lecture notes that he posts. Class time was done for demonstrations of what was in the lecture notes. Solid background use of Excel is suggested. Not a bad class overall.
Because of the pandemic, some parts of this class have changed. There's no midterm or final exam. There are weekly hws and groupwork (40% - which thankfully end with 4 wks to) and a final project (60%). He doesn't answer e-mails and releases lecture notes minutes before class. For the final paper: make a good cover, TOC, & explain the topics well.
AVOID ! This dude is a joke. All he does is read his lecture notes and brag about going to NYU. The grading is another story. You will not receive a single grade on ANY homework or classwork until AFTER the semester is over. So you won't know how you're doing in the class UNTIL IT'S OVER! Oh and he had office hours ONCE the ENTIRE SEMESTER!
He really is a good lecturer. Unfortunately when I took the class he seems to have randomly assigned final project grades to students from a grading distribution. I know that sounds hard to believe but that really is what seems to have happened. It is being investigated. Avoid this guy if you can.
He should not be teaching. Period. Gives homework group work and never gives feedback. Grades everything at the end to meet the grading distribution imposed by Baruch. Brushes you off if you ask questions and does not hold office hours. Hes a joke. Stay away from him.
Perhaps he's the best of the worst. Our "textbooks" were his notes, which was helpful in the homework but he did not do much teaching. He would talk for 2 hours and would not answer any questions or dismiss most of them. Then, we would do group work where most of us were confused. Never replied to emails and no direction on final project.
Has a way of turning reasonably basic STAT concepts into incredibly difficult to understand topics. In one class, he'll talk about law, meteorologists, bird migration, engineering.. Works exclusively in excel to demonstrate concepts to the class. Uses weather data in class every single lecture despite this being a MANAGERIAL statistics class.
This lazy guy will not give back any feedback and grades of your assignment to you unless you bring your work to his office hours and ask him, because he is not paid to grade your assignment (This is what he said in class). How ridiculous is that??? So you don't know if you can pass this cours until the last day of the semester. Never pick him tbh!
Professor Tatum was a great professor and he provides self-written lecture notes that clearly explains all the concepts on R. His grades are based on homework (which can take 2-3hrs each) and his final project. The only con is that he takes very long to grade work but if you go to his office hours, he can give you a sense of how youre doing.
I agree with the previous student who said Prof makes basic stuff very complicated. I took a stats class back in the bachelor's program, I could remember things from there that were clear and basic, and found myself questioning every lecture he wrote. He writes in a complicated language, too much water. Not managerial statistics. Zero Value.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, YOU WILL GONNA GET D OR C -, LOTS OF HW. SUPER HARD.
Only take this class if youre an expert in R, want to spend 4-5 hours on a single homework assignment, and want to lower your GPA. Im a straight A and B student but could not get through this class. Nobody in the class understood the lecture notes and assignments, very unclear. All this Professor does is talk about his time at NYU.
If i could go back in time i would have never taken data mining with this professor. It is impossible to do well when the instructions are not even clear and the professor does not have any interest in helping. beware
Worst class Ive ever taken at Baruch
Disgraceful
He treats himself as god instead of an educational service provider. Ignore students' emails, questions and harshly grade other people's works.
Professor Tatum should not be teaching. His lecture notes are confusing and longer than they need to be. I would not recommend taking classes with him unless you want to drop your gpa.
Do yourself a favor and take someone else
Hos lecture notes and videos are so helpful to understand very complex topics of statics. He made attendances optional, but he provides recorded lectures, which I find very interesting and brilliant. I don't think ant other professor does so.
His lecture notes and recorded videos are what makes him a great professor.
This is probably the worst professor at Baruch. His lectures are all over the place. He tends to go off topic and his lectures are unclear and all over the place. There is no feedback! You wont know how youre doing until the end. If it wasnt for the other students I would have failed, maybe not since his grades seemed to be given at random.
I get paid to teach, not to grade- Lawrence Tatum How will I know if Im doing well in the class if you do not provide feedback? Do not waste your time with this professor, find someone better.
Take anyone but him
50% project and 50% hws. He doesnt grade these hw so you dont know how to improve. Told a student to drop the class if they couldnt attend office hours. Thinks hes the greatest Professor but everyone is just confused. Take someone else
He is taking advantage of his PhD degree: not care about students at all, too much water in lectures, course notes were not updated within 5 years. He refused to teach you Rstudio and Jupyter Notebook, which are actually more efficient for learning data mining nowadays.
This professor should stop teaching. He makes a simple concept complicated and does not know how to teach it. What he did in class is to work with Excel, but gave a lot of unnecessary information which distracts his student. His class is filled with self-bragging. Don't grade HW until the end of the semester. Terrible professor, AVOID HIM!
I'm not the type to write reviews, but I felt obligated to do so after taking this class. When I first read these reviews on here and on Reddit, I thought they were exaggeratory but everything posted on here came out to be VERY true for the most part. We got no feedback on our assignments as the professor didn't grade a single assignment. Disgrace!
Pros: No quiz, exams, attendances, text book, Pearson online account cost. Recorded lectures are good. Cons: No feedback. Grading only occurs before the last day of the semester. Not fair.
he has very good strategy of killing class time. he has no intent to teach you stat knowledge at all by talking non sense and self bragging to distract students first. then he talk something feed the false information to his students.
for example he didn't mention a word about least square from entire semester of regression class. all he talked is the chimney and saying that the regression line is made of average chimney at particular x point and then connect these average points to from a linear regression line. This is totally false!
Prof Tatum is a very nice person but one of the worst educators I have ever experienced in my life. If you didn't have any stat background, good luck to you. He gives the worst lectures because most of the time he's just talking to himself and the lecture notes he created are full of nonsense examples that no human being can relate.
Can't believe a school has a professor like this. Cancelled class for three weeks in a row. His curriculum is not interactive at all, and you barely learn anything at all.
I have no idea why Baruch would still allow this professor to teach here. Throughout the semester, he gave ZERO feedback on homework. NEVER interacted with students (someone would have a question and he would literally talk over them and ignore them). How are we supposed to pass this class if we don't even know if we're improving? Unprofessional.
Graded homework and finals on baruch deadline, rambles on lectures and notes, stay away.
Horrible experience at Baruch College. He did not grade ANYTHING throughout the whole semester. He graded our work on the last day grade submissions were due into our CunyFirst. Dean of students said they couldn't do anything because it was addressed during the semester. If you DO take him make sure to address him not grading to the dept.
Avoid this professor! Ruin my GPA, and he graded all the things in last day posted to cunyfirst, so if you want to argue your grade you will not have enough time. half of the class got a F, SO PROFESSOR IF YOU SEE OUR COMMENTS YOU SHOULD CHANGE YOUR TEACHING STYLE AND BARUCH SHOULD HAVE BETTER PERSON TEACH IN THIS SUBJECT.
Don't choose him unless you want to waste your money and ruin your GPA.
He really digs into the basic stuff, but not the advanced topics he should be teaching. His lectures are hard to really follow bc they're just too long & have too many tangents. He cares about students & that they understand the material, but he's disorganized, takes a long time to grade, and is a tough grader.
He just reads out his lecture sheets in class . I learnt nothing from him. His class is completely monologue lectures. The entire grade depends on 6 assignments and a project submission and you will never know the score until end of semester. He feels so good to say that 70% of his student failed in last semester. Please don't take his class.
He just read out his slides. We couldn't ask him questions. Didn't grade or provide feedback on homework till the final. I couldn't learn a thing from him. It was unfortunate that I got an A in all 3 courses except his last semester. Stay away from him if you don't want to waste your money, time, and grade!
Avoid this class if possible. The professor is disorganized, provides no feedback, and grades assignments last minute. Unstuck ai and ChatGPT were more helpful than the lectures. Take this class only if absolutely necessary.
Not the best learning experience but it's easy to follow along. He doesn't really take attendance and gives out lengthy class notes and records all of his lectures so they can always be reviewed later.
His notes are great and didn't even need to go to class. The final is worth 90% but if you sincerely sit down and do the work while writing out all of your thoughts and curiosities, then it'll be fine.
Prof. Tatum is nice but unfortunately simply can't teach. The lecture is filled with his personal stories that are unrelated to the course. Six HW assignments and one final research hypothesis paper that ended up being 30+ pages. In our class, no exams. You won't learn anything from this class other than the research paper you personally write.
3 homework assignments and a final project worth 70% of grade. Very unclear and confusing instructions for both. He doesn't seem to know how to operate his laptop. He grades pretty tough too. No curve.
Took his online class. Hes an old professor. Struggled a lot navigating Zoom but all he gave was 3 HWs and 1 project. No midterm or final so honestly can't complain. This course you have to self teach yourself a lot especially with the project. I suck at stats and managed to score well on the project so if I can do it, you can too. Super nice prof.
This guy released grades for all homeworks few days before final and blamed on cuny's budget. Feedback is not helpful on final project. uploaded grade to cunyfirst last minute. Mentioned many times of his NYU life every lecture for no reason.
