He is a rude ****. He tries to trick with confusing test questions that make no sense. His test are regurgated, so just study old test. Dont ever ask him to write an recommendation, he is too lazy to follow through with it.
This professor sucks bad. His test do not correlate with the lecture. If you want to fail, take him. And his attitude sucks too. He is a JERK!!!!
why can't UH have more BOTTs in the science departm...!!!!
for bio1, hes alright - you have to pay attention and take good notes - most definatly not an easy teacher - overall an average professor if you can handle doing the work (for bio1)
Not too hard, but you so need to go to class. Read the book and use the CDROM that it comes with and you will be fine.
Tests doesn't reflect what info he gives in class, you have to go all the way around just to get that answer.
He gives pretty interesting lectures, but the tests are tough. Very very tough.
he's not that hard. you just have to go to all lectures and read.....read before you go to lecture! his exams are formatted like his review questions. he tends to use the same questions, just changing the wording. So a good way to study is by rephrasing the questions and using different answers
This professor is a great person with a good sense of humor, but his teaching skills lack some talent. He can sometimes start rambling in class and he takes too much time drawing out figures and graphs that can be easily looked up in a book. Not highly reccomended if you have trouble with science.
His lectures are useless. He's kinda funny but the only way to learn in his class is to read on your own. Use the textbook website and do the activities along with reading and you'll be fine.
somehow people found his lecture is fun, but i keep falling asleep in his class.
this guy is a congenital sadist, plz avoid at all costs.
Lectures are not on powerpoint so it's easier to concentrate. Stuff written on the board should always be copied in the notes. Tests cover lectures. Gives review sheet before exam. Switched profs mid-semester to Gunaratne (teaches from powerpoint=boring)
He's more interesting than a lot of teachers out there. He can be boring at times, but he doesn't use powerpoint, which is a plus.Must attend class for notes, which may be different from what's in the book.If you read and take notes, it's easy. No difficult concepts to learn.
He told us to only study old exams for the final, and that no new questions would be made. If he tells you this, don't listen to him. On the final, about 90% of questions were not on old exams. What a liar. Other than that, alright teacher and can be funny at times
He's funny, but you just never know what's going to be on the test.
He loves GOPHERS. can be funny at times but his switch partner was messed up. He makes it more entertaining in class then gunaratne but his tests-the questions r sumtimes weirdly worded n yes he lied 2 us about the final, said to study from the tests but there were only 10 similiar questions out of 50 that were on the final. didnt curve final grade
LOVED his class. I was dreading Biology as I had the worst teacher ever in high school. But Williams made the subject matter very interesting. Knows his stuff, doesn't just recite off of PowerPoint (like the dreaded Dr. Snider), and is never boring. Yes, tests are hard, but I made excellent grades just by studying the notes he gave in class.
good lecturer but his tests are very unpredictable and very hard. test are not intro to bio, more like bio major. he doesn't go by the textbook so don't need to buy it. go to class and write everything he writes on the board.
very good or excellent

Just like how everyone said, his tests are the only downfall about this class. They are very unpredictable, and after each class the material will leave you dumbfounded at times. Just make sure to invest time into this class, he is a WONDERFUL professor with tons of knowledge and his "free" comedy is a plus too.
good professor, at times a bit hard to understand what he's talking about but overall awesome. definitely knows his subject
you need the book, do the q's at each chapter's end(his tests are similar), & read ur notes. Do atleast 2 of 3 of those for a B or better.Sometimes powerp' s are the book verbatim, then I walk out. Nice guy, about as funny as a biol prof gets. I think his tests are funny too, "Surprise, you need to do more than take good notes & read to pass this!"
His test are hard. He must think we are trying to actually become biology majors. WE are not. This is just a intro class Dr. Williams!! Keep it simple.
Not very interested in Biology, but needed the course. He is a funny guy, but tests can be tricky with all the multiple choices. Never really went to class after I did well on first 2 tests, but I didn't do well on last 2. So basically, go to class and read the book! Still got a C+! Good for me because I hate BIOL!
He tries his best to be funny but his class is hard and hes not too funny. But he is a nice guy, if youre willing to work, you can get an A, but a C+ is really easy to get.
Tests have minor details on them that you would quickly gloss over. Kind of odd; always refers to fishing. Hardly puts notes from class on test.
the class was pretty easy. i almost got an A but i wasnt that much into the ecology part of the course. his reviews are actual questions that are going to be on the tests, so if you do those and read the book youll do well
His tests are very hard, yet I can't say that the class overall is an unfair one. His grading isn't as harsh as the actual test. I got the grade I think I deserved. I would suggest taking good notes and studying mostly from them, using book just as supplement to things you were foggy on.
i took him for 1310 and 1320. As long as you go to class it is easy. he is definitely the best Bio teacher at UH. some people didnt do good in his class because they don't pay attention or something but he is great.
I took him for 1310 and 1320 and he was good. He is a great teacher and truly loves BIO and teaching it. Make sure you go to class and take some notes and you will do great. His tests are kind of tricky sometimes but he grades way easy and has huge curves. definitely the best bio teacher at UH. take him if you are taking BIO.
Boring and hard class. Im in his class right now, and i have no clue what he's talking about.
Prof. williams is a pretty good professor. He always talks about fishing, and his classes can be pretty boring,so it becomes very tempting to miss class. READ THE BOOK!! if you do this, and read your notes you should most def. pass. at the end of the semester he gave a curve, but don't let that keep you from studying!
he is a good professor. very nice...he loves biology and it shows through his lectures...tests are okay, as long as you study the book and your notes, it should be fine!
Dont take him if u can. his tests dont come from his lectures at all. reading the book is still not enough. he gives poor review sheets. his tests are too confusing. u can tell him recycles old questions from a test bank. no matter how much u study, material u have not seen will be on the test. yes he is nice & enthusiastic, but tests are not fair
As if biology wasn't hard enough!! He really knows his material, but he makes it DIFFICULT for any of his students to understand it. I mostly had to rely on the book...& even with the book, I don't think I'm doing well. He's witty and funny, but his class is just IMPOSSIBLE.
I am in his class now and I'm suffering! It is obvious he is a very smart guy, and at first I thought this was a good thing, but his lectures are really obscure and VERY hard to follow. I really wish I had picked someone else. I've only taken one test, I thought I was well prepared...man, was I wrong.
He really knows the subject. However, he is really hard to understand. He also moves really fast through the book. The review he gives is pretty vague. I wish I had picked a different teacher. He is a nice guy but I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher.
The tests are very difficult, he's hard to understand and he makes stupid jokes. No extra credit, either.
i find online text better for a visual learner like me. He is a good teacher and all, but his class is boring :( talk too much.
i find online text better for a visual learner like me. He is a good teacher and all, but his class is boring :( talk too much. btw, no extra credit unfortunately. Review are somewhat okay...not too helpful
Oh man, the class was so boring. He spent about 20 minutes on each slide. Tests are hard and reviews don't really help.
I'm taking his class now and have an A. Prior to each test, I spend time reading each chapter and taking notes. This process has enabled me to do well...so as long as you care to study, you'll do fine. The reviews are not "unfair"...they are around 20 questions that are VERBATIM on the exams. All you have to do is STUDY!
This professor is HARD! I have never taken a multiple choice test that was so confusing! The reviews are very vauge and are only 10 questions long. Make sure that you know you math! he makes you do horrible equations without a calculator. I thought that Bio would be interesting, but wrong! hated every minute of it
Lecs r not mandatory nd he hardly use clicker. You MUST study the book very hard nd memorize graphs before taking the test, or u'll be very confused on test cuz his tests r sorta hard. It challenges whether u noe the concepts of chapters or not. I recommend doin the study guide it summerized chps better. The online text nd activites r also helpful.
To put it simply, if you don't take the class seriously, you won't pass. I read another review that said they spent time reading the text and taking notes... follow the advice. I didn't start doing that until mid semester. It worked. The tests are hard because they require you to actually memorize and understand the material. Just study hard.
Hard class. Impossible to get an A! I'm hoping to just make a C! No extra credit. 3 Tests and one final. Tests a tricky and difficult. Nice teacher. Very difficult class.
He's a good teacher, but the tests are very hard. Sometimes he forgets to go over things that he tests you on, that are not in the book either. I studied, read all chapters, took extensive notes, and still have absolutely no clue how to prepare for his tests!
This class was super hard and challanging! Teacher is very nice, entertaining, and you can talk to him if you need help, but the tests are way too hard! Most people don't get above a C on his tests. Final was impossible! 3 tests and one final! Good luck. Be sure to study your notes, read the book, and buy the study guide. Good luck!
I had Prof Williams for Biol 1310 & 1320 = BIG MISTAKE. Students taking this class are just trying to get their req'd sci credits & trust me...this man makes it as difficult as possible. He makes you buy a $50 clicker (that you barely use), he often tests over random material, and his lecture style is as boring as it gets.
hard class. tests are impossible to pass. buy the study guide and the textbook and read both prior to attending class. this is one class you will have to study for hours...best of luck to you!
VERY HARD CLASS Do not take this class if you are a last minute crammer!! Only 4 test NO EXTRA CREDIT!! No quizzes only the one's on a clicker but they don't help at all!! Avoid HIM!!! I studied my brain off and I only managed a D
He is the worst! Don't take this class. When he teaches he keeps talking without making sense and is so rude to people with questions. I wish i would've of known. It's supposed to be for non-science majors but the way he teaches it's the opposite What a waste of money and time.
Hard class!! His exams are difficult. He does not follow the syllabus! Before our fist exam I asked him what chapters would be on the exam (should I follow the syllabus or his lectures) he said wait and see?. Yeah he answered my question the week of the exam.
I'm taking him for summer Biology, He sucks. He uses the publishers power points so there is really no use of going to class. Just teach yourself and its just the same. He writes the review, but when its time for the test he adds extra stuff. He is just not a good professor, Take Dr.Knapp instead!
He's a nice person but cannot teach. He covers everything in the book but his exams are so detailed and specific. Gives you a review sheet but half of the info are not on the exams. Questions are more than concept based, they are EXAMPLES of concepts. Answer choices sound all the same. Most choices are all true, but you pick the BEST. Confusing.
this class will destroy your GPA, be for warned: STAY AWAY!!... he doesnt post the review or the pp before hand or on time and his tests are REDICULOUS! ... worst teacher ever, plus he has a problem about changing his mind about the test material after the review, leaving students destroyed.
Vague exam reviews. No homework or quizzes doesn't give the student a clear idea if they are understanding the material. You take an exam and if you get a low score you keep moving forward without a chance to learn the material. Exams are not posted online and you have to call ahead to his office for a chance to see it. Learning takes a backseat to getting through the material.
I really don't see what all the complaints are about. I liked this guy. There is a lot you have to do to prepare for his tests but overall are not impossible to pass as so many have said. I almost never went to class and was able to pull up a C+
This professor is AMAZING. You must go to his lectures, and take notes. Our class had good laughs this semester, and he makes biology enjoyable. It's not an easy class, but so long as you study and come to class you should do fine.
He doesn't reply to your emails ASAP. He's a good teacher with a little humor to keep you awake. The class is hard, I looked at the grades/workload on myedu and it's MORE HARDER than the intro to bio for majors classes. So work hard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I felt like the class was for science majors. I had to drop the course because I was not doing so well in it. He is a nice guy and makes the teaching fun, but when it comes to the test it is extremely hard. He makes it impossible to do a process of elimination on the test.
IF you pay attention in class and read the book (twice) you will do good on the tests. People give him a bad rap, but he is a really good professor and will help you with more than just Biology, just stop by his office and ask away. Very Helpful! Very Nice!
I think all these negative comments are from people who arent willing to put in the effort. Yea his lectures arent the most interesting but he fully explains everything if you just listen. You have to read the book, and take the notes. If you do this, then when he gives the review you know what to look over again and the test will be simple.
Dr. Williams is a mediocre teacher in a difficult subject. This class was not for science majors, but I felt like he was teaching like it was. It was a very difficult class, and I had to work really hard. To do well you have to go to lecture and pay attention, and read the book. The tests are multiple choice, but the questions can be confusing.
Great Professor. He has a bad reputation (according to the ratings), but he is very clear and makes himself available to the students. I was scared to take him, but I am glad I did. I am taking him for 1320 as well. Dont let the negative comments run you off. 4 EXAMS and quizzes AND A CURVE. Final is not cumulative.
Sleeper class.
Cool guy keeps the class entertained and tries to make bio fun even though its hard to because its a boring subject he's great professor and gives you a review well in advanced before test and sample questions that are on the test if you do the review thoroughly and get a study group you can make an A or B he's not hard you just gotta do your job
Professor Williams is very thorough. However, the tests can be difficult. His attempts at quizzes were not helpful. Take another Biology professor if you can.
Not very good. :((((((
Dr. Williams is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgeable, you can tell he really cares. I loved his class, you did need to study to do well in the class, but the whole point of taking a class should be to learn something. I know I have learned a lot. If you don't like Dr. Williams, maybe you shouldn't be at a college level.
I took Professor Williams for both of my science requirements and I hated Biology with my life. After I took him the first semester for 1310, I thought he was pretty interesting so I took him again for the spring. As long as you listen, take notes, and do the review a bit more in depth, you should do good in this class. Don't expect it to be easy.
Easy teacher. Tests are curved, barely studied for any tests and didn't go to class often and got a B
Interesting class. Go to class, take good notes using the pps he provides and study the book if you want to do well. Read the test questions carefully! I would take another class with him.
Overall, the majority of the material you learn will be on your own. The lectures provide very little, if any help for what is covered on the exam. Expect to read the book more than once in detail. Make sure you understand everything if you want an A.
Key to Making an A: (1) Attend class, listen and take notes (2) Read the chapters with a lot of emphasis on the DETAILS (3)Compare class notes and powerpoints w/ textbook notes(4) Use MasteringBio or "quizlet bio176" for practice problems (5)Try. Put in effort and focus. It's not that hard to earn an A
Very good and fair professor. Lectures are really helpful. You have to study (lectures, notes and text). Attending class was not a requirement, but you miss out when you don't attend. His lectures help to tie it all together.
He is a really funny man, well atleast he tries to be. Attempts to make the lectures interesting. Class isn't easy but it is BIOLOGY. Quizzes weekly, homework on Mastering Biology, and 3 exams, and then the final. I'd recommend taking him.
He's a professor that makes the otherwise boring subject of Biology pretty interesting. Attending his lectures definitely helps, but make sure you do your stuff outside class to assure you do well on the tests.
Dr.Williams is a great profesr, I have him right now, he is interesting and sarcastic if you like the humor. You can tell that he really cares for the subject and his students. The class is 50/50, half of you passing depends on you the other half on his teaching. The tests are not always easy do, they do require some critical thinking.
Williams is a great Prof. All these people hating on him are the people who don't come to class, or sit on facebook during class. I have an A and I sit near the front and I'm not what you'd call a NERD! Take him he's pretty funny and interesting. He's better than taking a foreign prof. that you cant understand.
Eco and Evo lab. This lab is ridiculously easy and most everyone in my class made an A+. Attendance is mandatory and grades come from a few short papers that are graded leniently. Keep in mind all the negative reviews are from students in Intro Bio and Intro Bio for NON science majorss. Upper level bio with him is fantastic.
I took Williams for BIOL 1310 and decided to take him again for 1320. Reading the textbook and understanding the concepts will at least get you a B in this class. I'd also recommend going to lectures, because Williams is a funny guy and makes things interesting. Just don't expect it to be easy.
Awesome guy. Lab seems pretty laid-back. Interesting field trips. Grading done mostly by TA. I screwed up a bit on the final presentation (graded by prof) so I got an A- but A is not hard to get.
ok, he is about to retire, he doesnt teach anything in class. he talks about the texans games, cougars games and at the end he asks us to look up on google meaningless question that is not related to the class we signed up for and the worst thing is that he goes and ask us about it on the test. list 4 natural historians.. ( oh really!) who cares?
the laziest teacher i have seen in University of Houston!the level of university of Houston is much higher than this. . No one should sign up for his classes!
Do you enjoy incoherent, off topic ramblings with no direction towards the topic at hand? Do you like professors that have a flagrant disregard for when homework, test reviews, and exam grades are posted, especially after they've guaranteed a posting date? Looking for a class to be the bane of your college career? THEN PROF. WILLIAMS IS FOR YOU!!
Not a good teacher. His lectures are useless, and he always talks about random things like fishing and football. The only was to pass the class is if you read the book intensively. Test are tough to pass.
Okay, well this class was not easy, but it wasn't difficult either. For the exams: Study his lectures and homework and you will might receive an A. Clickers: are a pain. My grade suffered because it's not a participation grade. It's either right or wrong! Paper: It is November and we still don't have any guidelines as to when it is due. So,yeah!
I found Dr. William's course quite fair. If you read the book and attend class, you should have no problems with passing. Tests can be a bit difficult, but not impossible. All the material is either in his lectures or in the book. I would definitely attend this class. There are clicker pop quizzes.
I missed a couple tests due to issues beyond my control, including the final, but I told him just as soon as I could and he let me retake them right then. He was very understanding and without his kindness I would have sunk like the Titanic. Make sure you go to class though because he has in class quizzes.
Dr. Williams is a cool guy. A bit dry, but he's good hearted. Took him for Intro Bio. He's very clear about the tests, and the final is all of them copy and pasted into one. Easy stuff. He allowed for me to take a test in his office when I couldn't attend an exam. Understanding guy. Didn't attend much (8AM), read the textbook, did LearnSmarts A
Dr. Williams is a good professor but not my favorite. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you don't need too. He has pushed off so many exam dates and other things. He is not clear on power points and does not really put mastering bio on any exams. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK!! Clicker questions gives points. HE WONT RESPOND TO EMAIL, and we guessed on everything.
I took Dr. Williams for History & Philosophy of Biology, he was extremely knowledgeable and funny. Lectures were mandatory, but fun to attend. I looked forward to attending his classes, he makes learning fun. There are a couple papers and several debates in class. His class is very engaging, do not take if you're shy. I wish he taught more classes!
He's one of the nicest professors I have ever had, but not the most helpful. he gives tests reviews although they did not help me much, and the hwks are very easy and will show up on test questions, there are clicker quizzes so you must come to class, and one paper. not easy but not too hard, you really really do have to study though.
Prof. Williams is a quirky individual. It's clear that he wants the best for us, but some of his lectures completely lost me due to unclear PowerPoints. Expect him to go off on tangents occasionally. He gives 4 exams, online homework, and an essay to write. The review sheets for the tests were useless for me. Just study with the online homework!!
Calls students out, especially if you do not know the answer to something. will not see him that often throughout the semester. have to write lab reports that are due 2 weeks after the lab is completed. and have a final presentation that is based on a term paper. Not very difficult but a very fun and interesting course to take.
He will work with you but show up to class. Extra credit through mastering biology which is basically the test.
Super Instructor and loves Biology! Some of it was a little difficult for me to master but made it through the class with some effort and always in attendance!. The beginning of the course had some trouble with the books and never did use the clickers. Overall good class!
So I barely ever went to class (professor didn't talk much about biology) and I managed to get a B. If you are the type of person that is good at guessing, not a bad class to take. Also if you do the learn smarts you will be fine. That is the basis of all the exams. Overall, definitely not my favorite class to take!
Take Professor Williams!!! I took him for BIOL 1310 and 1320 this year. He gets a little off topic, but he is hilarious and really cares about his job and the students. I definitely suggest going to his office hours if you don't understand something- it saved me. The class is pretty easy if you do your work, especially the mastering bio.
Dr. Williams made ecology and evol. lab harder than what it had to be. There were multiple field trips to far places, such as La Marque and Lake Jackson, and the students had to provide their own transportation. I am not happy with the lay out of the class; you do not know where you stand grade wise and all the grades come from long lab report
His lectures are not the most entertaining but you will get useful information for the tests. Make sure you do the extra credit because some of the questions there will be on the exam.
While the class was super easy and I got an A, I would not recommend taking this professor. It was never clear if he was or wasn't taking points for attendance, and he never answered anybody's emails. His tests were pulled directly from the homework online. One short paper. He puts students on the spot in class, which made me uncomfortable.
Dr. Williams has by far been my favorite professor! I took his Biol 3326 class and I have a new appreciation for ecology. He goes off topic a lot but his life stories are fun to listen to. There are debates in class but this class is not like any biology class you will ever take. I LOVE HIM!
Funny, laid back professor. The subject of Biology has never been a challenge for me to understand, however his exams are nothing like what's discussed in the lectures or in the textbook. You won't even need the textbook because nothing in the chapters is relevant to what's gonna be on the exam.
Best professor ive ever had. Keeps you engaged with the material and makes biology super interesting. Do the extra credit (pearson my lab) because it will prepare you VERY WELL for the tests. His tests are not tricky but do make sure you understand what he covered. (My major- teaching and learning)
he made us buy clickers but we only used it four times. takes random attendance so show up as much as you can. the tuesday before thanksgiving break when barely anyone was in class he made us take out a piece of paper and write "thank you for giving me 15 points for being here". barely teaches. do the mastering bio.
Not very good with talking to students
The lectures given were vague and short therefore when it came down to studying you would need to use the textbook. Clickers were a waste of money because they were hardly used. There is one report due.
I dont recommend taking him at all!!! He lectures more about his personal life and his cat than anything. He is about to retire and it definitely shows. He tells you to buy the clicker and NEVER uses it!! His tests are completely based off more mastering bio than ANYTHING. I wish i had more room to type but i cant stress enough TO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
This professor was very intriguing, by that I mean he really is weird. I barely came to class because his clicker usage in class was compact. If you study the mastering biology, download the GroupMe App, and do the 2 page report, you will definitely be fine! The book was only $55 with the relevant chapters. 4 exams and final is not cumulative.
Dr. Williams is sweet guy. If you make a point to talk to him in the beginning of the semester, he'll be sure to help you throughout if needed. His tests are very simple, I got an A or B on each one. The majority of people just used Mastering Biology as a study guide, and it's more book based. Like I said, if you just TALK to the guy, he'll help.
Attendance taken radomly so skipping class isnt the best. As long as you follow the lectures youre going to pass. Hilarious guy! Tells funny stories about his home life a lot.
His lectures aren't very helpful and he gets off topic frequently. However, his tests are all questions covered by Mastering Biology homework and his review, and the homework itself is extra credit that can add 4 points to your overall final grade. Read the book and do the homework and you'll be fine. This info also applies to BIOL 1320.
Horrible! Stay away from this prof if you can! His lectures did nothing to help learn the material and his lectures are nothing compared to the test! Do the mastering bio and you can get up to 4 points towards final grade, and you might want to do so because his tests are straight from it! He's also rude!
Dr. Williams is a wonderful professor. I learned a lot. Took him for Environment Bio of Texas which is a junior level course. Grade was based on two midterm exams and a paper. If you are not satisfied with your average, you can elect to take the final. Power points are very basic so it is important to attend lecture. Bittersweet that he is retiring
Nice guy, funny, easy class, essay heavy for exams
I took his class in the fall of 2017. I'm just getting around to writing a review. We had about 3 to 4 exams, homework on mastering biology, and a paper. His lectures were not very helpful at all. If he gave me a test about his wife, daughter and son, and cat, I think I would have made an A on every test (lol). Do the homework and read the book.
Loved this class! Read and memorize the textbook (terms, case studies etc) for a 4.0. Tutorial and lecture slides are also copy and pasted from the textbook. Exams are fair! He is very open to help students outside of class and doesn't make you feel dumb even if you ask dumb questions lol For the last class, he brought a TON of prizes for kahoot.
