Very funny and engaging lectures, but also very clear (she knows the material well)...makes class time fly by.
She is a great teacher, but her tests are very unclear and a lot of the questions are on things she never tells you to study
She has way toooo much energy. She is nice and knows her stuff but gets annoying. If you come to class after or while she is taking roll she will mark you late. 2 Exams, Group project, paper, and journals. She curves her exams.
Loves to make crazy facial expressions...very intelligent in her area, and knows how to make us apply our knowledge. Very vague when it comes to test prep and case studies. Overall, she's a good prof if you plan on studying a little.
Just like all the others said she is very unclear on her testing! She likes to trick! She will give 2 good answers to a multi choice question but one will be better than the other! The class was entertaining
i'm a journalism major she "advises" me - WARNING: she does not know what she's talking about. 'nough said.
nice, friendly, but everyone says she has dissertation anger, she wants to make you work, and she will on her tests-HARD- and the research paper was REALLY HARD. becareful-tests are much harder than class would make it seem like.
Two exams and a group presentation & paper. Can only get the book at a local bookstore because she wants to support small businesses. She makes herself out harder than she really is.
This teacher is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Half the class failed her mid term. I would strongly suggest not going with this lady. I am not a slacker, I work extremly hard at school.
she wants u to be on time to class and with work, yet she is late with coming to class and extremely bad with grading and handing it back. you have to be up her ass to get anything back.
good, fantastic teacher. tests are a pain, though.
tells entertaining stories during class, and often gets off subject. seems like a funny lady, and class seems like everything will be easy...but no! tests are extremely difficult, and vague.
Very perky and cheerful, I think it would be a little hard to take if the class in the morning. Gives tons of examples to help make the material understandable-but sometimes she gets too off track. Tests are more difficult than she makes them out to be.
Dr Bryant is difficult but she lays her expectations out the first day of class. Tests are hard but if you study THOROUGHLY you will be fine, and the content is excellent and relatable. Could be better at giving feedback with papers. By the way I got an A
although she was really fun in class, i wouldnt take her again simply because of her work load. even she realized it was too much in the end. if you dont know what an annotated bibliography is you may learn here, only for there were 10 of them, and they were 4 pages single spaced each. not fun.
I learned a lot in this class, and it helped improve my writing skills. Challenging, but rewarding. I enjoyed her discussions immensely, and would take her again.
Looks like she has been working out. KEEP IT UP GIRL. Oh by the way take her class it's worth it
Bryant seems puts off like shes easy, but thats a joke. She is very demanding, and also vague. Way too much reading and writing. Chapters every night, reflection essays, 10 research paper, and finals/midterms that DO NOT reflect the in class or book work. Too liberal. Do not take.
AWFUL. She canceled 3 classes, let us out early the rest of the time, lectured ONE time, syllabus was ALL wrong, and yet her demands for US were really high. Why is she getting paid to sit around while we are having group discussions (independent of her)? Should have flushed $1600 down the toilet.
would not reccommend, does not follow syllabus, makes her class out to be so easy and fun, but it is neither of those. almost everyone in the class failed the midterm, she doesn't review anything.
I thought she was great. She didn't really follow the syllabus, however, but gave informative and entertaining lectures. She is very outgoing and wants people to talk in class. I had fun and learned a lot. Some people think her tests are hard, but do the reading and study and you'll be ok.
She is so entertaining as a professor. You never had to go to class but I still did because it was entertaining. It was all good until our midterm where it was completely off the wall and not about things we talked about.
She is a funny, intelligent, and interesting person, and her classes are never dull. I'd definitely take her again.
She is funny and very entertaining prof. HOWEVER....YOU HAVE TO READ AND KNOW THE TEXT Everything that you will be tested on in both of these classes requires knowing and understanding the text because she DOES NOT go over the text. If you want an A, I suggest reading and re-reading the text and knowing how to apply it.Don't count on her lectures
bottom line, if you can take another professor. DO IT!! I didnt like her! She is the only CMN prof that doesnt cover material in the book, for a 100 level course her exams are hard. She teaches her own material and profs should not be doing that, she should be teaching from the book. I took summer I can only imagine what the full qtr would be like
I loved her. Grow up,people--you're attending DePaul, not DeVry.
Yes, exactly. My point has been made.
She's a very nice and funny woman. But her test was pretty tricky. Study hard and read the book!!
dude, class is SO worth it. shes SO entertaining and hillarious. shes interesting and her jokes and ideas pertain to class.
Don't ask about the dog.
She gave really good lectures, but when it was time for a test that didn't really matter. You must must must read the book, most of the content was taken from the book even though we never discussed it in class. I was never bored, but this one will require a lot of outside work. But it's college. So. You'll have that.
All I have to say is in the beginning of the class you get a lecture about how a C really isn't a bad grade. BOO!
I found her to be the most annoying person I have ever encountered. The most infuriating part was that people encouraged her by laughing at her stupid tangents and "jokes." She thinks she is funny and "hip," but really is not at all. The topics in class were interesting, but her tests were hard and didnt pertain to lecture. Super annoying woman!
Just like everyone says, she's got some very interesting material and she does make some odd jokes about things. I've been able to leave class with so much trivia to bore my friends with, making me feel confident about the class material...but then when test time came, i felt like i might as well not have shown up to class because i had NO IDEA w
A lot of people had a problem with the final, but I didn't think it was the end of the world. Make sure to review all of the reading. She doesn't go over it all in class but it's still on the test (which she curves). Really interesting lectures, but it's true they're filled with a lot of useless info. Overall really helpful though. I recommend her.
She is hillarious! Absolutely amazing! You leave class in a good mood. For her half of the quarter you have an analysis and an exam. Exam covers both lectures and textbook, but if you read and come to class, you won't have any problems (I got a 94%).She is always willing to help. I would take her again for sure!
Hilarious! Lectures were very entertaining! Wish I could have her for all of CMN 101 instead of the split of teachers! Defintely take her!
She's entertaining, and you can learn a lot from her, but she doesn't make her expectations very clear. I was 20 minutes late for a 9:40am midterm and she wouldn't let me take it because one student had finished and left (2 MINUTES BEFORE). She said the test was 'unsecured'. It was 1/3 of my grade during a summer class. I had to drop it.
Leah is a wonderful professor. She is so intelligent and her lectures truly reflect that fact. I looked forward to going to class everytime because I knew I would leave with new knowledge. She bases her final on both the book and the lecture, but if you study and attend class, it will be fine. I got a 100%! Highly recommended!
Super nice and really funny. That being said, her expectations aren't really laid out. She claimed that the final was going to be "a piece of cake" when in reality it wasn't. Read the book...and not just the plain text, read all of those colored boxes and "fun facts" too because they may or may not be on the final. All in all she's alright.
Leah is the funniest teacher at DePaul.I only went to like one class and it was hands down the best lecture I've ever received in my 3 years at DePaul. She gives an amazing lecture on the dark side of communication and how people deal with death. DONT miss it. Pretty easy graded, but you CANNOT be late on the paper. SHE WILL TAKE MAJOR POINTS OFF.
She is a joke. For one she ordered the book from some shop off campus and it was not ready for pick up till two weeks in. She was rude and confrontational when asked about it. She also is sarcastic if you ask a question she does not like. My be funny but with no respect it makes the class a waste. Take another teacher if you ask questions.
Prof. Bryant was an AMAZING teacher. You can tell she really loves her job and enjoys sharing her knowledge with students. She only taught for half of the quarter and I legitimately missed her the second half!
Leah is totally awesome. She was definitely one of my favorite professors. In a huge lecture classroom she was so effective in engaging the whole class. The material was easy, but I still learned quite a bit from her! I highly recommend.
if youre not going to take her for 101... id say watch out. anything beyond 101 will be a great learning experience, but with a LOT of research work that will make you want to die. literally. no joke, extreme caution.
Just as the person below me said, only take her if it's for 101. For dark side, we had a very hard essay form midterm exam (that everyone had to rewrite since they did badly) and a HUGE research project that takes a lot of work ALL quarter long. She's a fair grader. Project is interesting and worth the pay off if you really like comm.
Do not take this course if you do not absolutely love and believe in this subject matter. She presents everything as absolute fact and manages class time poorly so that she does not cover every topic that is on the very difficult exams. She is not a fair or reasonable grader. Avoid this class!
It looks like the + ratings havent taken a comm class past 101. She doesnt teach with the student in mind. She just talks at u its up to the student to guess what she wants on tests then she is shocked when u dont give her exactly what she wants! Dont bother asking Qs she'll just ignore it if she doesnt like ur Q. I would avoid her at all costs.
Her intro to comm was literally the worst. She was unnecessarily harsh grading after her class I retook turned in the same work and got an A from a C. She isn't helpful and lectures are very disorganized. Too many anecdotes and Jersey Shore references, made class unbearable.
She is a really nice and sweet. Attendance was mandatory because it was a discover Chicago class, but I didn't mind going because she made it very interesting and she really wants you to learn. She is a pretty easy grader if you do the requirements and add a little more to it. She's very clear about what she wants so its fine. I recommend her!
I also had Leah for my Discover Chicago class first quarter, and I love how she teaches! She teaches the information in such a scientific way that it isn't as awkward to discuss. If you ask her a question, she answers honestly. She gets really excited and is enthusiastic about what she's teaching and it makes me look forward to learning the topics!
I had her for CMN101 and i thought that she was great! she always provided examples to real life situations to help us understand the concepts. she wasnt very clear on what she wanted on the exams so you basically have to take really good notes. other than that she is great and i would recommend her!
Bryant seems great at first but is too into telling you about herself. She spends more time ranting about her cats than actually telling you what you need to know. Our midterm, which was supposed to be super easy, was very hard. The average in my class was a 70% whereas other classes had an average of 88% in the same quarter. I wouldn't take her.
At first I hated her! She went off on tangents and I was really confused on what she was exactly testing us on. But as the class progressed she got a little better.. but not by much. She isn't very clear on what you'll be tested on for the midterm.. SO STUDY STUDY STUDY everything and anything... the test was difficult...case study.. not so much.
I liked her, and she's funny, but she's not clear on what she expects. Midterm was awful! She only taught the first half of CMN 101 so I was relieved to have Jaime the second half. She's a nice lady, but not the best teacher.
Bryant is one of the most dynamic lecturers at DePaul and I would highly recommend that anyone in Relational Communication or any student with an open elective take her for the Dark Side course. She is passionate about the content and is always super prepared.
Dr. Bryant is amazing! She is very helpful. Her assignments are interesting and helpful in learning about personal relationships. Love to talk about research and areas of RELC. She is very open and friendly and really knew how to engage the class in discussions. Definitely appreciates when you participate in class.
Pretty straightforward and easy class. The material is interesting but can get a little repetitive at times. Quizzes are pretty simple if you paid attention to the readings. Writing assignments are a little weird because you have to do different exercises that basically amount to stalking people. Strange choice for a communication class.
This professor is great. I took her course online and she was super helpful. Online quizzes, discussion posts, and CAE's. One of each, every week. Read the chapter and answer the questions. If you read, you'll pass. She's great! Taking her again next quarter.
Easiest online elective class I've taken. There is an assignment every week and weekly quizzes, but they're pretty easy and most of the answers are online. No midterm or final exam. The final project is the homework assignments compiled into one large portfolio. She gives you two weeks to complete it. Take her.
Although this was an online course, I was really confused on what she was wanted, in terms of coursework. She isn't very clear on what is required, especially the writing assignment. I would not recommend taking her.
Leah is amazing. Not once in my four years at DePaul have I met a professor that cares and knows the content as she does. It is really inspiring. This class is very hard. Long lectures and the annotations are brutal. Overall she is a fair grader and is always open for help. She is the best!
This class was pretty simple, but the assignments can be time consuming, but nothing too major. I learned a lot of from this class, but some stuff was review. I would recommend taking this class for a major requirement or elective. No midterm or final. Just have a final profolio of our weekly assignments. Easy class, but you learn something!
Leah Bryant is the best professor I had this quarter (I would say ever, but I've only been in school one quarter). She is tough but she really wants to see you do your best. If you are confused about anything, just email her/ask her and she'll clear it up. She cares a lot and is a fantastic teacher. Hopefully I can take one of her classes again.
I am sure Leah is great in-person, but for an intercession class the learning curve was WAY too tough. Assignments were very confusing and research jargon is used throughout. The class was online and it should not have been, way too difficult for an online class. So confusing, biggest regret was taking this online class. Sure she's great in person.
She is SO unclear with directions and expectations. When you reach out she is rude and disrespectful and doesn't fix any issues. No makeup work even if you have a death in the family :-) You can do absolutely everything she asks and more and you will still get a bad grade. This is coming from a straight A Comm Major.
Textbook is required, you have to read from it every week. Lots of papers but they're short papers + discussion posts + easy quizzes. You do watch films and then have to write papers from that. It can be hard to remember b/c you reference them during throughout the 10 weeks. Class is a lot of work but not impossible. Nice professor.
Lectures were awesome! She would go off on tangents a lot, but it was fine because they were still interesting. BUT... this class is SO much work. We had very few assignments, but they were all SO difficult and time consuming and made me want to die. She also explains instructions very thoroughly (discussing the syllabus took the whole 1.5 hours).
A really cool professor. She grades fairly and may seem strict and intimidating at first but that's totally not the case. Just do the right thing and you'll do great. I learned a lot in my discover class with her and I would retake in a heartbeat.
Leah is AWESOME. She may seem strict off the bat, and she kind of is, but she is one of the best professors I have ever had. She tells you EXACTLY what she expects from each assignment and will happily answer any questions you have. If you do the work and engage in the class lectures, you should have no problem doing well in this course.
I will take all of her classes until I graduate. She is so passionate about everything she says, she makes me want to be a better student. She terrified me on the first day, BUT I think she does that on purpose so you know she's serious and deserves respect. Her assignments are hard, lots of reading and writing but its honestly worth it.
Took this class online and it proved to be a good comm. elective. Clear grading criteria and it was the perfect amount of work for an online class - not too much. Professor Bryant was very nice and responded to emails quickly! Lowest quiz grade gets dropped.
Great instructor! Really clear lectures and notes. Set expectations for what she'd like to see from students. Textbook readings for each week can be a bit tedious, but quizzes and discussions are relatively easy to get good scores on. Replies to emails and Q&A discussion board quickly. Would definitely take her again for a more advanced class.
Weekly quizzes are easy if you read. She does read everything you submit (even if participation points, so take all assignments seriously). She's supportive and complimentary if you do the work. Weekly lectures are short but engaging and directly apply the text book. Lowest grades are dropped, and she'll work with you if you're struggling.
Painless. Not a single complaint. Expectations for the course are clear and she gives thoughtful feedback.
Course is not difficult if you keep up on the reading, writing assignments and lectures. A lot of the coursework rooted in your experiences, so you can easily draw from that if you pay even a little attention to the reading and lectures. Take each writing assignment seriously; she does read it and provides great feedback. She's funny and caring!
This class was terrible. She opts for watching videos and papers over actual interaction and communication. Good luck trying to reach her outside of class, and if she responds, she's rude and unclear in her response. This class isn't worth your time, and it's especially not worth the money. She's completely dependent on the textbook.
Worst professor I've had in my entire college career.
As an online asynch professor, she was very organized and on top of things. There's a good amount of writing per week, but the readings are easy to understand and quizzes are straightforward. No final or midterm, and the final project is basically just compiling your work throughout the quarter.
I had Dr. Bryant for "HON 110 Discover Chicago - Dying to Understand: Loss and Society in Chicago" and it was amazing! I felt a strong connection with her by the end of class because of how she strived to be not just a professor but a mentor. The work was easy and usually open-ended and the expectations were expressed clearly!
I had her when I was a freshman and senior at DePaul. Freshman class she was over the top with the Chicago quarter class. Asynch class was easy. You can coast through the assignments but just Googling things online. Papers were easy to write each week and got As on all of then. Final is super easy too.
Dr. Bryant was so kind. The whole teaching crew was awesome and calmed my nerves as this is most likely the first course you'll take. The class is almost entirely based on in-class activities, but there is a reflection and possible written final project. As long as you put in effort and show up to every class, it is an easy A.
Took Dr. Bryant's discover course and she's so sweet and so knowledgeable. Never had any homework and final was a project of choice. Such an easy grader and amazing to talk to!
Good professor, but so much homework. Also, make sure to read your textbook otherwise you won't know whats going on.
