She is very nice and smart!!!!! And she makes lessons interesting!!!!
Very interesting and taught really well. Understood most of what she says in lecture. Also, she omits the parts from slides/textbook that she doesnt get to in lecture--very considerate.
Very Good teacher. Easy to listen to. Explains material explicitly. Nice person.
Lectures were very boring. Fell asleep nearly every class, but it was probably just the course. Midterm was easy though and only covered what was actually done in class.
Interesting course, and Dr. Ver is very approachable and helpful.
She was very helpful. I did my course over DE&T so I really began to slack off. Aside from that, all the materials were there and she was very quick to respond. Although I never met her in person, she seems really nice!
May was incredibly helpful and always tried to help when she could. I took this class distance ed and found that the question sets were difficult but May often let students redo them to make sure we understood the concepts. The final exam is easy as long as you work hard on the question sets and make an effort to learn the concepts.
I took this class by Distance and May was an extremely helpful instructor and was always on top of the class. Assignments were reasonable and marked fairly, final exam was also fair. Put in the work and you will do very well. Never met her but she seems really nice. Thumbs Up!
Wow...hard. But she is really, really nice.
good prof! the review questions she gives you are very helpful since they're similiar to the ones on the midterms/final. they can be hard but lots of resources to help you out. just have to ask!
While she is helpful and detailed in lectures, her questions are extremely hard and seriously require hours just to decipher each and every detail in the question and choices. Also, the questions are similar on the midterm, but they are imo, trickily changed so that it is easy to skip over the small differences. A nice person, but EXTREMELY hard.
I took this through Distance Ed., and it turned out awesome! The assignments are quite helpful, and she's a really easy marker. However, the final exam = HELL! Extremely hard, but I still did well in the class overall!
Took by distance ed- Extremely helpful, responds to emails within hours, always very nice and doesn't make you feel dumb when you ask questions. Assignments are straight out of course manual.
I took this course with no background in EOSC. The best part is May lets you redo your assignments (which are quite hard) so if you put in effort you can do well. The exam was brutal b/c you need to know a lot. May is wonderful and extremely helpful. Great prof... material is challenging. Take EOSC courses with May over courses with Surdas Mohit!
Took dist ed. She's really helpful and will answer most of your questions on Vista. As for the course, ALOT of reading (online notes and textbook) and requires a lot of memorization. 5 quizzes and 1 final, all MC. If you're truly interested in taking this I would recommend in class instead of dist ed. Too much to absorb via reading.
Took Distance Ed. She will e-mail you back instantly. I found reading other students' posts on the Vista message boards extremely helpful. Most people take this course as an easy elective, however it really isn't that easy... A LOT of memorization involved. If you're interested in the content, then it's all good. If not, you will hate this course..
DistanceEd- Great course to get through if you need 300-level credits. Material wasn't too hard and assignments were reasonable. She replied my emails in an hour and was extremely helpful.
Took distance ed. BRUTAL FINAL, doesn't relate to practice questions AT ALL. DO NOT TAKE if you wanna have a passing grade.
This was a distance ed. course. Quizzes were pretty intense, and the final exam was much harder than I expected. A comprehensive study guide was provided, but I didn't think it matched the exam too well. Instructor was pleasant, and helpful, and responded to questions/concerns quickly. A good challenge, but not easy!
She is very helpful. Leads a very interactive class.
Distance Ed. For a student with a 85% average, this class is impossibly hard. Don't take it. It's boring and tries to cram in too much material for one class worth. And she refuses to hear out your concerns about how hard this course is despite that being the main subject of the discussion board. AVOID THIS CLASS.
Most dedicated professor at UBC. Stayed awake for several hours after the online review session ended, to answer ONE student's unlimited supply of questions. Class is only difficult if you choose not to read the very easy-to-understand textbook/lessons. Otherwise, pretty easy and an incredible professor!!
May is helpful, but this class is just too much material. Yet to have taken the final yet, but the study time needed for this course is just too much. You really need to be obsessive to keep track of the discussion board comments which are helpful but just overload.
Final exam was very fair in the amount of material that students are expected to know. Lots of material in this course by with the amount of choice on the final, you really only need to know less than half of it. Final's worth 40%. With discussion marks, ends up pulling marks up a lot.
Distance Ed This class is very hard if you are new to EOSC and distance ed and the material is a lot and the knowledge is not so much learn which you do from the notes but to apply deeply in which you do not learn anywhere. This class is a rough go
Distance Ed is super easy if you know how to cram and remember stuff in a short time. I basically skim through the notes before the quizzes and end up with 90+. Plus generous 3% bonus if you do all the surveys. Final definitely needs at least 24 hrs to prep if you want 80+, heck if you have more time A+ is very likely..
Distance ED course wasn't too hard. She relies to emails quickly and in detail. Use modules online during quizzes, and study for the final. Class average was 72%.
I took this class as Distance Ed and found the content quite hard because I wasn't used to a D.E. class that required so much participation in discussions. I finally got my sh*t together at the end and got an A+ on the final (I studied for 2 days). Leah is a very fair marker, but she does teach a LOT of content. I never bought the textbook.
Did Distance Ed. Easy if you actually put in the work and prepare for online quizzes each worth 10% (6 of them and final is 40%). Final was tougher and needs a good amount of studying, similar to mock final though. You can get by and do well without the book (it costs a lot), but it would help you bit.
Took the online course. Leah was still very helpful when I emailed her. Although I ended up doing well in the course, it required A LOT of reading.
She was the worst prof ever! She asked us to buy the textbk which she never uses it. Her online quizzes are so hard and irrelevant to what is taught!! People say this is a GPA booster Course, but it truly isn't. Also, whenever i email her, she replies really rudely and short without answering what i asked. And she holds a very high expectation!!!!
Spent $80 on a course text which she hardly refers to on her quizzes - but keeps assigning it for required readings anyways! WAY too many online discussions for a distance course… don't find her helpful or friendly either.
The online course is a joke. The online quizzes are just meant to trick you. Doesnt matter if you study for 2 days or 2 hours. You can get 100% on the practice quizzes and then get a 70% on the actual quiz. When she wrote back in the emails she was rude and not helpful. Do not take this course if you want a fun elective!!!
This course had a TON of reading which wouldn't be so bad, except her tests had nothing to do with what we were reading. You could use your notes, yet her exams were tricky and confusing, and you aren't able to see what the correct answer was after they were marked. She was not very helpful either. Definitely not a GPA booster - maybe try in class.
This class requires you to keep up with a TON of reading! Leah is helpful if you word your question right, but otherwise can be rather rude. Make sure to study the course modules carefully and glimpse over the text; there wasn't any great need for the expensive thing, either. Overall, only take this course if you like the material.
This course is so bad! the prof did not really help
Do not buy online book. Buy hard copy. Leah was very helpful and responded to e-mails quick. Quizzes were very challenging. However, she gave a great study guide for final. . It is a hard class..so keep up!
This as a really bad course! The quizzes are meant to trick you and it does not matter how much you study for them. The prof was not helpful! There is an insane amount of reading required for the course and the quizzes are not even a reflection of those reading. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone.
May is helpful only if you word your question correctly, otherwise she may come off as a bit rude. She answers questions promptly. The course required tons of reading, but if you nail down the key points it shouldn't be too bad. In most cases, it won't live up to be the "Easy A" reputation it has, but it's definitely not impossible.
Leah is incredibly rude and not helpful. This is a good course to take, but only if you never have to deal with Leah. She is the worst part of this course.
Course was pretty easy. Do not buy the textbook as it was completely unnecessary. Do not ask the prof any questions as she is extremely rude and hostile. Prof should not have a place at UBC.
Extremely responsive to email and on course discussion board. The course has a heavy reading load. The prof makes real effort to answer questions to help you understand the difficult technical concepts. I felt I learned a lot about the oceans from this course and from this instructor.
Extremely rude professor. Course was relatively easy, but the way she handles students is inappropriate.
Enjoyed the content of the course, but was not pleased with this professor. Tried to contact her several times for assistance but she was extremely condescending and rude. The quizzes do not reflect the learning objectives as stated. For online, BB collaborate is a requirement (not "suggested"), so be sure to use it, or she will give you a 0.
Awful lecturer. She's a guest lecturer for this course. Unfortunately, because of her lack of understanding that those who take EOSC 314 are NOT science students, she often switches between terminology and favors the more scientific terms, as opposed to helping us understand the material. Quizzes differ from slides, and overall, hard to understand.
If you put in the effort for this course, you will do well. It is actually pretty interesting because its all natural disasters that could happen to you. You do not NEED the textbook, i didn't use it and ended with an 85%. Try hard on the quizzes because they are worth 60% of total grade. Definitely recommended as GPA booster
May and TAs provide feedback consistently. Group discussions is highly encouraged. It's a free ten points on your final grade to participate. Material and textbook are easy. Some errors in textbook but May is open to receiving feedback. Would definitely take a class with her again!
Very easy grader even though I am horrible at science. Would highly recommend to arts students who need to fulfill their science credit! Boosts your GPA too
I had a course with her in my last semester at UBC, was so scared i wasn't going to pass it. Honestly I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone. She's a tough marker and isn't really clear with what she wants. For the final exam help, she wont really help you answer your questions, she just responds with another question. Wont recommend.
She is the most rude prof I have ever encountered. Although I am in an online course, her responds to my emails are absolutely horrible and rude and very un-professional. Avoid her if you can! She is late on posting course content and does not try and help when I have questions and concerns. Unhelpful and unorganized.
Ridiculous course load. The readings she assigns are fairly heavy and there's very little explaining done. You have to keep up with her online readings + textbook chapters and the textbook is worth about $100. Have to pass the final to pass the course. It's an uninspiring course. In fact, I think I hate the ocean now.
I would not recommend this course taught by this prof if this is your first online course and/or EOSC course in general. Lectures are insanely heavy, her replies to questions are prompt but not always helpful, and the final is 50% or fail the whole class which I can't believe there are profs that still do this.
horrible, ridiculous amount of readings and online discussions NEEDED. homeworks are stupid, irrelevant to course, and she grades them incredibly hard. seriously some questions asked are "is this a primary, secondary, or tertiary resource"? Which seems like it would be an easy but i swear it depends on her mood and im in third year and this course
Leah was not a good prof for this course. A horrendous amount of reading, online discussions and quizzes were NECESSARY. I am a senior (4th year student) with a background in basic sciences and kin (I took first year science courses) and this course was insanely dense. The final itself has an individual and group component.
Unnecessary homework assignments; although articles to be read were related to the class content, the questions on the assignment are like what you learn from English class; unfair since that is not what we are learning in this course. Prof was also a little rude/showing unnecessary attitude when replying to emails.
Honestly, she's a loser like how is she a prof at Ubc. This isn't a goddamn English class. How can a professor be so rude something should be done by the Dean.
I personally never had to email her or talk to her personally so I don't know about the rudeness that I see in the other reviews. I thought her lectures were actually ok and she didn't seem particularly mean in class. She would explain things slowly and sometimes it seemed like we didn't know anything. I think she's alright.
If you go into her classes expecting a GPA booster, don't put in effort, then end up getting a bad mark, it's your own fault. I had her for EOSC 314 online. Her marking is very fair, her exams are fair, she is not rude, and she puts in a lot of time for an online course actually. EOSC 314 and 114 are both at the least easy 80+ courses + bonus marks
ridiculous amount of effort needed to pass this course. THIS IS NOT gpa booster.
She taught the last unit and she wasn't bad, she tried to keep the class engaged but it's hard considering most of the class takes it as a "GPA" booster (it isn't). She's sweet and tries her best with the course material.
Tough course, lots of content to learn, to quite a high level of understanding. When responding to questions on the online discussion, she was rather snarky. Quizzes were extremely difficult, and the course notes were frustrating and boring to read. NOT A GPA BOOSTER
TOOK THIS COURSE ONLINE. PROFESSOR WAS VERY INACCESSIBLE; RUDE AND DISMISSIVE WHEN RESPONDING TO EMAILS. CRITERIA FOR PAPERS WAS SEEMINGLY CLEAR BUT THEN NOT EFFECTIVELY USED WHEN GRADING. BOTH PROFESSOR AND TA NOT WILLING TO LISTEN WHEN ASKING ABOUT GRADE.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR. Her lecture slides are bad, and her lecturing ability is pretty poor. Most importantly, her exam questions are also ridiculously hard. One good thing about her is that she responds to piazza pretty quickly. But other than that, shes horrible.
I took eosc 314 and 114 with her. Very hard grading criteria. 50 percent on final is require to pass the course. Take michael instead .
She assigns so many assignments that are utterly pointless. Class was a total waste of time, don't take it.
She assigns homework that has nothing to do with the actual course content, that take hours to do. Many of these questions are also up to interpretation. It's harder to do well on the homework than on the quizzes.
As the final approaches for this course I have a few things to say: I won't do well, Leah May Ver is condescending, the course grading is often debatable but only has one right answer and overall this is something to avoid. I didn't take it as a GPA booster but I needed a science credit. Take a better course than hers she is NOT a good professor.
WORST PROF EVER. She is literally the worst. I'm an A-B student who takes her mark very seriously. It was an online course and the lectures take HOURS to get through - after reading AND taking notes on these lectures I still did not achieve good marks on the quizzes... When emailing her she responds with attitude and IS NO HELP.
Dr. May tries to inspire students to think about natural hazards in real life, and thus the course note is pretty much video clips + details. The Distance education version requires tons and tons of reading. Basically, you read the entire book by the end. The reading assignments do not help with learning at all!
Very tough marking and expectations aren't clear. When you ask for help she's not helpful and seems rude. This course is very content and reading heavy so get ready to spend forever on homework and studying. Regardless of your grades throughout the course, if you fail the exam you fail the course. Didn't even make lecture videos, just paragraphs
Take any other science class than one taught by Leah. The class was full of homework assignments irrelevant to the topic, the exam questions always asked something outside the learning objectives, and concepts are not well explained to students bad at science. I somehow got an A-, but it was not worth the trouble.
EOSC Natural Disasters is informative and has exciting material. However, the English used in the instructions can be complicated for ESL students. The homework and quizzes are challenging. Must work hard. I'd recommend this because the topics you're learning about are really fun! Instructionsclear. Perfect online course + sci credit for BA.
Initially took this class due to my interest in the subject matter but was quickly discouraged by the absolutely terrible teaching in this course. I would not recommend this course to anyone I know, do not take it! There were no lecture videos just reading and the quizzes were difficult and unclear. Also not accommodating to online learning.
Dr. Ver is a terrible prof, she expects you to learn solely by reading the textbook and then her notes and is very rude and passive-aggressive when you try to communicate with her. I regret taking this class.
Forget being a good professor, shes not even a good human being. Very unaccommodating and will do absolutely nothing if you want help with the class, literally just grinning behind her camera because UBC pays her to sit back in her chair and do absolutely nothing. Do not take this class if you want any guidance at all from your professor.
She didn't always answer questions on discussion boards which was a big deal because the class was completely asynchronous. There is heavy reading. A huge portion of your mark is group work. If you stay up to date with the lesson notes and properly study them, you'll easily get an A.
This course does not have any prerequisites which it should as I was totally not prepared for the extent and level of knowledge she requires. Does not have lecture slides rather word documents of overly detailed notes. Tests and quizzes are very difficult. Worst elective taken thus far
DON'T TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!!!!Lots of Reading! Unnecessary Reading Assignment. Lots of tricky questions in the quiz. Dont take EOSC 114!!!!!!!
I wouldn't even say she's a tough grader, more like a confusing grader. She assigns tons of readings and notes with no videos for explanation, puts out a test guide and grading criteria, AND THEN COMPLETELY IGNORES IT. she has all the answers in her head. looks for very specific answers that are not found in the material.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!!!!!!! Assignments are unrelated to lecture materials and learning goals. You need to spend most of your time reading lecture notes which were posted on Canvas. Assignments are Class Map and Reading Assignment. If you want to be depressed, you can take this course.
Assignments were so so useless, not really related to material. Her practice exam was SO much easier than the actual exam and did not even help, I had no idea exactly what to study because her learning goals were long and basically just said "you have to know everything". I enjoyed the material, but the way the class was made it a drag.
Don't take this course! I took this because I thought it would be a GPA booster. Her assignments are not related to the material but they are time-consuming. You learn by reading all the lecture notes with a super long list of learning goals. She's like all the deadlines are on Canvas and it's your fault to be behind schedule.
I took EOSC 114 async. Is the prof nice? On the surface, yes. Async mode, not at all. Does she answer your questions? Depends, most of the time she refers you to TAs for assistance - not helpful... Realize you have a need for academic concession, be prepared to taste a condescending tone. If you MUST take a course with her, do it with a friend.
I 100% regret taking this class. It was a waste of time and money. Prof was not helpful at all.
Awful class. Assignments are confusing and the readings don't help at all. Quizzes are a little better but often include questions that are not talked about at all in the readings.
Dr Ver is accessible outside of the class during office hours, and she also responds to piazza quickly. But, she doesn't answer questions directly; she asks a question back that is supposed to guide your understanding. Her audio recording cuts out all the time and cannot be fixed, so must attend in person.
Half the class is about to fail because she makes it so that if you fail the exam you fail the course. This is a SERIOUSLY hard course, esp compared to Eosc 310 where you were allowed a cheat sheet for the final.
If you're an Arts student looking to complete that pesky science prereq, don't come into this class expecting a good time. Dr. Ver is perhaps the rudest professor I've met so far at UBC. Her coursework is unclear, time-consuming, and often irrelevant to the learning goals. Please learn from my mistakes and avoid this hellish class at all costs!
My rating is more for the class than the professor. I took EOSC114 online for science requirement and did not interact with prof once. The open-book quizzes are fine, but the homework is difficult and passing the course relies on a cumulative, hyper-specific final. While the topic is interesting, I don't think it's is worth the stress.
the worst prof I met in UBC. unorganized schedule, inconsistent modules, homework & map work too heavy and 50% of them not insightful at all. Content is easy but she is making it very very hard for students to learn. Don't take it, just terrible.
heavy course load and overwhelming amount of information for 100 level elective condescending to students assignments measure applied memorization of material
I feel like her low ratings are quite unfair and biased. She was actually one of the better eosc profs w/ rly detailed slides, great organization, and an abundance of iclicker practice Qs. She lists out the slides that correspond to each learning goal and makes it clear which slides we don't need to know. Topics were also very interesting.
Content is A LOT for a first-year course. The content is interesting but extremely heavy reading and heavy homework. Only take it if you have a real passion for learning the science behind these things and not take it because it seems like an easy credit. You must pass the final to pass the course or you fail.
do not take this class. there is alot of content and the exams are incredibly hard and unfair. the answers to the midterm were very specific. they say to only focus on the learning objectives but they ask questions outside of the scope of those objectives.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS YOUR SCIENCE REQUIREMENT. Take it from someone who messed up and chose this class. The final exam is at 8:30 am, on the last day of the finals season, and is worth 45%. Incredibly difficult grading and a heavy amount of memorization.
Lectures are incredibly disorganized, and we are told to focus on the "learning goals". Come exams, material is tested that is not included under the goals and concepts that were discussed for maybe 2 minutes in one lecture are emphasized. Grading is incredibly tough, if you don't include specific words she is looking for you will not get credit.
She wasn't awful but I wouldn't recommend this class. Lectures are quantity over quality, like 15 pollution topics and extremely dense. She is a fairly boring lecturer as well. You are told just to focus on the objectives but a) some questions don't relate to them and b) there are a million of them. No assignments to test your understanding either.
Lectures were sometimes uninteresting, learning goals were vague or unrelated to exam questions and the slides were incomprehensibly convoluted at times. Guest lectures were (sometimes) cool but not always well integrated with the rest of the content. There were some cool case studies if you're interested in the topic though.
This class was horrible. It was the bane of my existence. Do not ever take it if you want to take a science requirement fulfillment class. There are many reading assignments and questions from finals were on it from there which was never disclosed. Need to pass the exam to pass the class and everyone I know was struggling - even the science kids
Didn't explain concepts very well, average for her midterm was 62%, the class overall was very confusing.
Dr Ver was an okay lecturer. We learned about many pollution topics but her lectures were very dry and she read off the slides to the point where I did great in the class without even attending lectures. She gives learning objectives for each lecture and if you're able to memorize those, you will do great on exams.
EOSC114 is a challenging course with a heavy workload. While the content is interesting, the professor's teaching style and unclear expectations make it difficult to excel. I found unstuck study and ChatGPT helpful for study prep, but would hesitate to take this class again.
The course is one of the most confusing I've taken. The content is manageable but every week I'd spend hours trying to figure out what the assignments were asking. There's very little learning, it's just trying to figure out outdated websites. It's easy to get a good mark, but if you're actually interested in learning, don't take this course.
She told me I needed better time management skills when I was in the process of getting accommodations for my chronic illness. The course had a heavy workload with many assignments, and while I was able to get a good grade, it was a hassle to do so.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I'm a fourth year and I struggled to keep up. Insane amount of reading, assignments complicated and irrelevant, quizzes way more difficult than lecture material. She is also condescending, says if we're doing poorly that we're not trying hard enough. If you're just trying to satisfy your science credit, stay away.
Literally the worst. The amount of lecture material is ridiculous for a first year class. Assignments so confusing and not applicable to lectures. Final exam is definetly easier but some content was never discussed. I'm a straight A student and I got in the 50s on 2 of the reading assignments. I'm worried about passing the final.
Arts students, don't take this class. Take EOSC 118 instead. Worst class ever taken at UBC
Lectures are half fluff and actual useless information. I spend 3 hours on homework (every 2 weeks). 1 hour on graded quizzes (every 2 weeks) and 4-6 hours on lectures a week. Fighting for my life for 1% of my grade.
