A Great Prof.! Invokes interest and is clear about what she wants. Funny too!
i thought she was a wonderful teacher and i would work wif her again!

Very good lecturer (one of the few profs that keeps me awake!) Very funny and knowledgable and encouraged input from the students. I would definately take another course with her.
Full of info and very interested in teaching
Tough marker. Taught a section she wasn't too familiar with. Her lack of familiarity with the subjects or proper pronunciation of the names did not inspire very much confidence (especially in regards to her marking).
She's tough but only because she wants her students to learn.
It's hard to know what she's looking for in your answers to exam questions. Not a very consistent marker. Not always clear about Greek terms. Otherwise, interesting lecturer.
She was a fine lecturer, and had novel approaches to teaching, and not just the same old. But she is way too hard of a marker, especially considering that she herself did not seem to know everything, yet graded ridiculously hard.
she sucks stay away
She made me want to go even though it was an early morning class.
Hardest marker, very unclear of what she wanted on assignments and exams. However, a wonderful lecturer; She made class interesting and fun, and I thoroughly enjoyed the lectures. She forms agood repoire with the students, but is a brutal marker
SHE IS SUCH A HARD MARKER...picky on tenchincal errors on your paper without offering useful advice on how to improve your essay. Otherwise, her lectures are fun to go to.
While Leanne's lectures are engaging and demonstrate a great depth of knowledge, she neither encourages questions nor demonstrates the compassion and tactfulness required of someone in her profession...(cont.)

Tries to pack in two weeks worth of material in one lecture. Non-specific and unclear exam requirements. Hard, picky marker.

She is an amazing lecturer and is very patient. She explains the subject clearly and brings an element of humour into the classroom. She is not an easy teacher, but she is fair and will challenge you to learn the topic.

An enthusiastic and dynamic lecturer who obviously loves the material dearly; somewhat unclear about her expectations reagarding tests and exams; extremely nitpicky marker (your footnotes must be PERFECT); doesn't always know the subject matter well.
Tough but fair.
A tough marker but lectures were clear and tests were striaght forward. Approachable.
A good professor who teaches a complicated subject in a clear and descriptive manner. Not an easy marker, but is clear about what is expected from assignments, very helpful outside of class.
Friendly but if you are trying to get anywhere as far as your average is concerned avoid like the plague!
awesome
Overall excellent. Only problem is her obvious anxiety outside class. Seemed very dismissive few times I attended office hours, gives impression to want to relate and know about the student but says potentially offensive things. Very hot and cold.
B******** really strict marking on tests and essays!!!! but teaches well, really knows her stuff
was able to create an enjoyable classroom environment.
She makes it the most exciting class to come to, esp. after a day of sciences!!
she is a great prof. made learning a language fun and exciting, joked around, very personable, if you can't handle a bit of teasing you may not like her, but that is what i think makes her great. she is also very passionate about roman stuff... kinda like a kid!
Awesome Teacher. Crazziest Prof I have ever come across, but I love her!!! She is great and makes this class so much fun!!!
enjoyed it
I love her -- she's funny and charming and helpful. She's a tough grader, so make sure to be on the ball, but class for me was immensely enjoyable.
great prof, yet more for research than teaching. had her in latin, exciting, i say.
great teacher who's tough on the marking but is hilarious in the classroom...listen to what she say's and then ask a question as she hates being interupted and DO NOT bring a cell-phone or dare to let it ring if you value your life or grades.

Excellent teacher - would recommend her to everyone. Her lectures are straight forward and easy to understand. Helpful outside of the classroom; Funny; extremely knowledgeable about her subjects. One of the best classes for the term.
Had her for Roman history and Roman law. Great class. Very interesting. She is very passionate and knowledgable. Very funny too. She marks hard but fair. I would take a class with her again. Recommended
Excellent instructor. Smart, sexy, just all around wonderful.
Boring. Overly hard marker, before her class I got 90%+ in Latin, same thing after her class. In her class I got %70, something seems wrong with that picture. I worked as hard as I ever had.
a tough but fair marker. the course was well structured and not too much work. go to class, pay attention, DO NOT LEAVE CELL-PHONES ON! and you will do fine. very nice and possessing a fine sense of humour. she is also pretty..ahem..sexy.
Fantastic teacher, I would definitely take a class with her again. Very fair marker, as long as you attend class and pay attention, you will fare just fine. Keep your cell phone off, but that's common sense. Having her as a teacher was definitely an encouraging factor for majoring in Classical Studies.
Textbook is not needed at all! You must go to class - her exams are solely based on her notes - but very fair if you study them! Easy essay topics provided as well.
What a sassy woman! You've got to have a tough skin, but if you've got one and you like to speak up and banter, she's the teacher for you!
Prof. Leanne Bablitz is great! She's very knowledgeable, thorough, a tough marker but she makes it clear what she wants. You have to go to the lectures to know what will be on the exams, and she does talk a mile a minute(but she does have to cover 1000 years of history in 3 months). She's very foxy too!
This woman is a joke.
You MUST MUST go to class! You do not need to buy the textbook. She's strict but if you put in the effort, you'll get a great mark in all of her classes. She is fantastic and super helpful during office hours. She may seem gruff at first, but she's a very sweet lady. SHOW UP to class - she notices.
Going to class is mandatory. The books only help elaborate the essentials from lectures.A pretty fair marker, but hard.Is def into teaching the material and knows the material. Would definately take another course with her, although maybe not Latin. Def tough on the outside but does have a ligher inside with her great enthousiasm and jokes.
NEVER miss class, because she goes a mile a minute and you'll be totally lost otherwise. It's true that she's a tough marker, so work hard. Classes are always well taught and she's happy to answer questions too.
Hard marker, plays favorites, whiny and annoying. Class was poorly planned and lectures taken straight out of the books. You are better off taking a history class with someone more knowledgeable.
You MUST show up for class. Taking down in-class material is essential to scoring a decent grade. People say that she's a but if you work reasonably hard for it and come to class often, you'll be fine. Pretty good course in general.
Um...can we get our grades already please?
super hard and picky marker, lectures straight out of the textbooks.
Second worst prof I've had in 4 years. Scatterbrained and hopelessly disorganized. Marks too hard. Talks too fast. Takes FOREVER to return tests/papers. Comments are mean and unhelpful. Lacks sound knowledge, terrible at answering questions. Through all this remains arrogant and sarcastic to the point of offensive. Save your GPA and avoid her.
Agree with the comments below. Hard marking, poor organization of lectures, took forever to get grades and papers back.
Hard marker and even admits she doesnt know the subject, yet will grade you harshly. I wouldnt take her for any class again.
I quite liked her. She's enthusiastic and engaging. Explains things clearly. Marks fairly. She's pretty humourous too.
Totally agree with the hard and arbitrary marking comment. She plays favorites and treats students like kids even when she does not know the subject matter well herself.
She has really high expectations for her students and as other comments suggest, her marking isn't really fair. If she likes you then you've got it made.
one word: HARD!!! we have to read about 100 pages/week and we have a quiz every week. you would think that by reading you can get a perfect grade right? wrong. the quiz is sooo random and you never know what's going to be on it. she chooses random tid bits that no one even remembers.
This course was a pleasure to take and Professor Bablitz is extremely knowledgeable, fun and passionate about her Roman history...this is a course worth taking no matter what faculty/discipline you are in...the primary sources of Suetonius, Plutarch and Tacitus are all entertaining to read and give a great view into the Roman world.
My favourite Classical Studies professor! She is strict but fair, and makes the topics really come alive. If a question was raised in class that she did not know the answer to she would generally come to the next class with the answer. A bit of a hard marker, but definitely worth taking her classes!
I have had the pleasure of taking a number of classes with Prof. Bablitz and have loved every minute of them! Yes, you have to attend class but she is so interesting and passionate that mandatory attendance is not much trouble. Her classes are organized so that you get what you put in. If you are prepared to work then you will do well!
TERRIBLE!!! I've been in Classics for 5 years and have never had a prof this atrocious. Arrogant, snarky, rude, pretentious and mean! Throws around Latin terminology like everyone had taken Latin before and answers questions with sarcasm and condescension. Avoid like the plague, she is a very UNHAPPY person.
If you like to speak up, I think you'd enjoy this class. Prof. Bablitz is very amusing, but she can also be very confusing--she makes a lot of mistakes in latin and then students correct her!
Has a strong personality that takes awhile to get used to. Took 2 classes with her,she comes off as pretentious when talking to students but I think it more reflects her sense of humor on the subject.once you get used to her she is helpful and her passion for the subject keeps the class interesting.
Great Prof! Engaging anfd generally knows her stuff- if she doesn't have the answer to a question she will find it for you. Rewards hard work and attendance with good marks but does not play favourites- if you slack off you will not do well. She marks hard, but fairly. Makes the content interesting and fun to learn!
Absolutely mind-blowingly phenomenal teacher. She's so passionate and it really shows! Appears snarky at first when answering questions in class, but if you approach her during office hours she is warm and sunny and very kind. She was the deciding point on becoming a Classical Studies major. She made history come to life - love it! A++++++ teacher!
Bablitz is AMAZING. She's hilarious and extremely engaging; her passion for the subject is evident right from the start. Having said that, she is a tough one to please... So you may not get the best grade but you'll have fun! :) Do it!
She is wonderful--have known her for years and am in love with her!
Okay, so she isn't an easy marker and you do have to put in the hours to get a decent grade...but she's extremely passionate about her topics, gives good, organized lectures, and is absolutely hilarious and entertaining. If you can manage putting in the effort, take something with her.
If you are looking to take a class with Leanne I implore you, DON'T DO IT. The classes are fun, and shes great with lectures and questions. You can tell she has a real passion about the topic, and if she doesn't know she will find out. BUT she marks almost randomly, and gives 3 hour tests a 1 hour limit. save your gpa and stay away, DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Bablitz is one of the best professors I've ever had. Don't expect to get away with slacking off in her class, but if you put in the time and effort into your coursework you will be well rewarded, and she will make time to help you whenever you need it. Super passionate about her subject material, and is not afraid to roast you.
If you're thinking of taking this class online during the pandemic, don't do it. There's so much content between the readings and lectures (that do not have any text or slides to accompany her pre-recorded videos), a lot of group + individual work, a midterm + final, a term paper, weekly discussions and she's a tough marker too.
Leanne is chaotic-good: hilarious, will roast you, but is more than happy to meet with you at office hours and answer your questions. Put in the work, be concise with your words in your assignments and you can pull off an A. Treat the Du Plessis textbook as your Holy Bible. I really liked the online format of this class -- it was super flexible.
Professor Bablitz has to be the worst professor I have ever encountered. She is rude/condescending, speaks to you like you're dumb; She is unorganized with providing course material/updates. When I asked her to update the schedule, she emailed me with hostility. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! Especially for the head of the department. I DO NOT recommend!
Pretends to want to help students, but is just a paycheck thief. Lecture slides never posted to canvas despite saying she will every week. Super unprofessional and condescending. Asked her what I missed for one class as I had COVID and she basically told me to F off and refused to help at all.
Professor Bablitz is by far one of the best professors I've had at UBC. She is extremely knowledgeable about her field and gives great lectures. She goes out of her way to get to know her students and build strong relationships. I have nothing but amazing things to say about Professor Bablitz, she's wonderful!
Horrible professor. Doesn't listen to her students when they ask for help. Treats all students rudely and disrespectfully. Doesn't offer midterm or final help. Never posts the slides (barely has any content). Makes you read 3-4 books everyday and calls it “bedtime reading”. When emailed, gives snarky responses and manipulates you. DONT TAKE!!
Very knowledgeable, she has a funny sarcastic sense of humor which made lectures entertaining. Harsh grader, the quizzes tested random facts that were hard to remember. The in-class essays were also graded harshly and you had to do lots of reading to prep. I like her but the class was tough for an elective. Can't skip class, her slides are useless.
No recordings no slides: extra hard to follow b/c she stumbles over her words often. Assignment criteria is vague and grading is harsh. Grade only comes from 3 things, all backloaded to the end of the course. No way to tell how youre doing. Wish I had waited for a diff prof. Feedback was minimal + unhelpful, got annoyed if you asked questions
No recordings no slides; hard to follow b/c she stumbles over her words constantly. Assignment criteria is vague and grading is harsh. Feedback is even worse, sometimes mean. She gets annoyed if you ask questions. Grade only comes from 3 things, all backloaded to the end of the course. No way to tell how youre doing. Take this with a different prof
You were made to feel like an inconvenience for asking a question - or even for clarification. Lecture slides were no good and lectures were difficult to follow and disorganised. I learnt much more from the textbook. I would recommend taking this with another prof.
Outside of the tags, my main complaint is her dislike of questions, whether due to confusion or curiosity. This is especially bad for a course on something like Roman law, which can be difficult and inconsistent simply due to how the Romans made it. An *informal* 3-question limit per person was even instated. Take this course with another prof.
Her feedback isn't remotely helpful and comes across as mean, same with her emails. Lectures are typically disorganized and you CANNOT miss class because her slides are useless.
Missed a class? Good luck. Lecture slides are never posted, grades are never updated on Canvas, unclear marking criteria, questions about the exam are always answered vague. Extremely unprofessional.
The material is dense, and her lack of clear grading criteria and high expectations make it far worse, as she does not seem to recognize that students are also juggling other courses. Her grading is very inconsistent and hard to understand. She is somewhat rude to students in class, especially when they ask questions. Would def avoid.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! I am warning you now... Multiple students in my class said she was a bully and she also is very vocal about how annoyed she gets when students ask questions. She also favours White male students and gives them special treatment over other students. She lacks sympathy for her students and is unprofessional.
