He's an okay teacher. Biology is what I do and he cofused me at times. You really need to study hard for exams and make sure you understand the material.
Can't stand him. He has a terrible accent so if that makes it hard to focus don't take him. Lectures are pointless and have nothing to do with the text but he requiers that you "click in" 75% of the time, have fun.
I thought baines was a great teacher, people say his accent is hard to understand but it's rather easy. He is always willing to help and his tests are straight from the slides, i really liked him.
TAKE FOR BIO 105!! Goes through material quickly sometimes but makes sure students understand. Encourages students to ask questions. Expects students to answer his questions to see if they understand. Tests aren't difficult but not entirely easy. They're pretty much like the powerpoints. Drops lowest quiz. Accent isnt bad at all!
His accent is NOT hard to follow at all. He's not a horrible teacher, just gives hard exams. Everything he goes over in class will be on the test, but there will also be details from the book. Make sure you read the book those are the questions that will get you on his exams.
He's a decent teacher, his tests are multiple choice with 2 short answer so you have a chance but they are pretty hard. I found myself reading from book alot to understand and even then I still failed a test, so Id say hes a 2nd or 3rd option if possible.
Tough class but great professor. If you study his notes and go ask him questions at his office hours, you should do well. Don't take him if you're not ready to put in a lot of time and energy.
Great teacher, uses his slides like no other. He will pull things from the textbook for the tests. As long as you keep up and don't get behind you should do fine.
Pretty clear on what he wants, but lectures are a bit boring. Only plus is that you get extra credit when you use an iclicker. If you took AP Biology in High School this class is a breeze, I haven't found a need to open the book once.
great guy tries as hard as he can to make that class interesting. uses many movies or diagrams which are very helpful. definitely recommend him
great guy tries as hard as he can to make that class interesting. uses many movies or diagrams which are very helpful. definitely recommend him, the accent is not a problem at all and sometimes he makes fun of it himself so it's entertaining.
It is impossible to get a good grade in this class. Baines is a good guy, and you can tell he really likes what he teaches, but your going to feel like no matter what you do, you cant get a good grade to save your life. If you have him... make sure you do well on quizzes and in lab- the tests are ridiculous so don't depend on them
His exams can be pretty difficult but as long as you go to class and pay attention and study at least 4 hours before it, you'll do fine. It's NOT hard to get a good grade in the class. He makes the class as intersting as he can, but it does drag on a bit. Would recommend him to anyone taking bio 103/105
If you go to class a listen he explains things so they're much clearer. Tests are tricky but you can do well if you pay attention. Very down to earth. As long as you study before tests you can do fine.
The worst class I have ever taken. It is ridiculously hard for only a 100 level class and a gen ed. He doesn't really teach, he just reads off the slides. The tests are beastly hard and impossible to do good on. Overall: disappointing.
This semester in Dr. Baines's class has been great! He does an amazing job in lecture by explaining anything that you need explained and applying it to terms you can understand. He loves class involvement and does anonymous "clicker" questions to see where the class needs help. I highly recommend taking him.
Not a bad class-slightly challenging, but regular attendance and skimming the textbook helped a lot. I would not rely solely on lecture slides to study for tests; some topics only mentioned briefly end up having a lot of questions asked on the exams, so pay attention! Sit in the front couple rows and participate so he knows your face.
Great professor! He clearly knows what he is talking about and can put it is terms that are easy to understand. Very approachable and doesn't mind questions. Tests can be tricky, be sure to study and attend class with your iclicker for attendance.
Overall, I think Baines is pretty good. His course roughly covers the book and exams are directly from his pre-made powerpoint notes. His exams are not easy by any means and cover an extraordinary amount of material, but regular attendance and clear notes will get you through. On-line quizzes and the lab should be the easy points.
I would not recommend him to anyone! He reads his power point notes out loud which you have in front of you. Doesn't teach at all! His tests are absolutely ridiculous and expects you to use tutors instead of him teaching.
Lee Baines, THE BEST BIO TEACHER. Seriously. He knows what he is talking about, makes you laugh in class, and is very clear on what he wants. Tests do require a lot of studying, but seriously it is not hard. I recommend him for Bio 105 for sure.
Baines knows what he is talking about! Although I wouldnt consider him an easy teacher, if you go to class regularly and pay attention, you will really learn so much. He actually makes class interesting and while tests are challenging all material on them is expected and has been covered well in class.
I have never had so much fun in a class before. Best teacher. I learned so much too.
I really liked Baines. Was very nice and offered time to meet with him or tutors if needed. PowerPoints were good and were online to look back on. Class was enjoyable and he goes over material the class does not understand.
Baines is a really good guy. He is funny and really encourages everyone going to the tutors. He is a pretty decent teacher as well. Set time aside to study for tests too!
Baines was a great teacher. He taught the material well and was very understanding. He tried to help each student individually if needed. He made the class interesting and informative. The tests are difficult and you have to study quite a bit. Pay attention and do the easy homework and you'll do fine.
Baines is a great professor! You can tell that he truly wants everyone to do as best as possible. His tests can be tricky, but if you attent lecture and do some studying outside of class it is possible to do well! Take bio with baines if you can!
Terrible professor. Every class is a lecture with only his power point, which he reads word for word off of it. He is not helpful, he expects you to go to the tutors to get help. Instead of him helping you. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Great Teacher! He does lecture off powerpoints for all of class but he makes the material interesting and covers it well and in depth. Information on tests is covered all in class and on certain readings he assigns. Take his class, he is a great professor and the British accent makes it even better!
Most interesting thing? His British accent. He is a terrible science teacher. Literally reads powerpoint word for word. Also teaches at very elementary level and expects you to be experts for his tricky multiple choice. Love bio, just NOT with him.
Awesome, great professor. Very helpful. Hard class, but interesting. Uses a lot of videos and draws lots of helpful diagrams. He helped me a lot.
Love Bio, got an A in the class...but still one of the worst professors. I don't get why so many people like him. He acts annoyed when talking to him, reads off notes (which are very elementary). READ THE BOOK. You literally learn more from the book and nothing from lecture. Good luck.
Easily my favorite professor. His lecture made concepts easy to understand. When you go through exams in his office hours he is extremely helpful and kind. I would highly recommend him!!
Lectures are interesting, but can cause overload occasionally. keep up with notes and you'll do fine, but expect to work. Lots of material, but overall an awesome teacher and helpful and understanding.
Overall decent professor. He's always willing to answer questions and further explain things. Only thing I didn't like was how the review questions never compared to the actual exam questions. Review was super easy, then exam was really hard. Definitely a class you have to study a lot for and take good notes.
What a wonderful teacher! I really enjoyed this class. I had a hard time with it (study a LOT...you'll need to). However, Dr. Baines is always kind and helpful to his students and really wants them to do well. One of the nicest teachers I've had. I'll really miss this class.
The class was hard but Baines was a good prof. He always answers questions and won't make you feel dumb for asking. Quizzes were all online and easy, but the tests were tough and so was the final. Out of class studying is definitely required to get a good grade.
Really friendly prof who genuinely enjoys what he's teaching. I paid attention in lecture and studied for an hour or so on a weekly basis and received consistent A's on the exams. As long as you pay attention and make connections, you'll be fine.
I 100% suggest him as a teacher. His office hours are great, always willing to help and he truly wants to see you succeed. His tests are not easy, but if you put in the work you can get an A.
Good professor that loves and is interested in what he teaches. Test are about application of what you learn so make sure you understand the content. I studied a few days before each test and maintained a C average. He is helpful and takes the time to get to know you if you speak up in class and pay attention! Glad i ended up with him for Bio!
If you want an a, or even a b, don't take this class. A sort of nice prof, but the tests are NOTHING like what we were taught in lecture. If you don't want to teach a subject to yourself, then I would highly suggest not taking him.
Fun guy but a lot of the questions on the test were nothing like his notes!! Very hard to get an A or a B. He also tended to ramble on in discussion about useless things that won't help on the test.
He knows his stuff! It's a hard class but that's just because it's bio! I would recommend him as a professor! He has a British accent and I love it!
He was a fantastic professor! He was always more than willing to help outside of class and hes lectures were interesting and helpful. He really likes it when students come to his office hours and hey he has a british accent so how bad could he be?
Dr. Baines is an amazing professor! He is very clear with his expectations. This class won't be a walk in the park, but he will help you through each and every step along the way. Definitely recommend!
Dr. Baines is a great professor. His lectures are always interesting and I never once was bored. He explains the concepts clearly and helps you understand them if you ask questions. You need to put in the time and effort to receive a good grade, but I learned a lot from his class!
Dr. Baines is very helpful and always asks if we had any questions. Bio 105 is not the easiest class to take, but Dr. Baines does a great job teaching the class. I would highly recommend!
I loved Dr. Baines! He was extremely helpful when you need it outside of class. His lectures are very clear and helpful and he always answers questions. He was very easy to talk to and approach.
The class is hard af. I would study for weeks in advance and still fail... he was a good professor but I could go to class and understand everything but it still did no help for the exams. no extra credit soooooo hard to get a good grade. change your major
Baines was great! If you've taken AP Bio, the class will be a breeze, otherwise expect to study (but this is true for any bio 105 class). Baines is funny and his lectures are interesting to listen to (and a British accent never hurts). Tests are fair, just expect comprehension type questions. Would definitely take him again!
Overall, Baines was a good professor. His tests are tough but if you study you should do well. He was also a tough grader on projects. There are easier BIO105 teachers out there but he is not horrible and is very willing to help!
Dr. Baines was great! While his tests were tough, if you put in the work you will be fine. Overall a great class. Would take again!
Great teacher, fun to listen to! Be ready to have an iCLicker and use it, also going to tutoring is mandatory and worth 2 points, kind of dumb. Overall easy course if you have a background in biology, also great explainer!
You go to class and sit for a two hour slide show. He puts the slides online so you can download them and jot down what he says which is CRUCIAL if you want to do well on the tests, which are extremely difficult. I personally did not enjoy him as a professor but other people seem to favor him, it must be the British accent.
The tests are extremely tough. You have to know the material so well that you can apply it conceptually. Baines is very nice and helpful, I highly recommend going to the tutor center and his office hours.
Professor Baines was probably the worst bio professor I had. He is all over the place and the class is extremely difficult. He grades very tough and the lectures go on forever.
Tough grader and tests, even when studied for, are way too hard.I would study for two weeks prior to tests and still not do well. Did not enjoy his class at all and found very difficult even though I enjoy and typically do well in bio classes. Overall I would not reccomend as a professor.
Dr. Baines has been by far the worst professor I have had here at UW-L. Despite this class already being very difficult, he makes the tests and quizzes more confusing than they need to be. He is a harsh grader on group projects as well, so beware. I do not recommend taking him.
Good professor, hard class
Baines is a very intelligent professor who knows what he's talking about, however, he is a tough grader and goes through the material at a quick pace. Have your notes ready ahead of time, and make sure you study outside of class often or you will struggle.
Baines is a wonderful professor. He stresses the importance of coming to class, and if you don't show up you won't pass. He is very patient, and if you don't understand he will take class time and demonstrate it for everyone. VERY flexible, and is always willing to help. He is a great professor, and wants you to succeed. Take him, you won't regret.
Dr. Baines is a very caring professor. If you work hard and study a lot outside of class, you can do well. He is always willing to help you outside of class and really cares about you as a student. I would take him again. He also goes into depth on a lot of the topics, where as many other professors do not, so I felt like I learned a lot.
Biology classes are going to be hard. This class was no exception either. You have to study hard and try in order to get good grades on the tests. Lectures aren't the most exciting, but they are necessary to attend in order to understand the content. He isn't kidding when he tells you that the exams are hard. It is no longer like high school bio.
Mr. Baines makes learning bio interesting. I hated AP Biology, but loved his lectures. He does research for the field, so he knows his stuff. I sometimes had trouble getting in contact with him since the class was so large, but overall great professor.
I would consider Baines to be one of the worst professors I've had here at UWL. He didn't seem to care about his students and lectures were often unclear and hard to follow. Tests are pretty difficult and he's a tough grader, even on group projects and other work. I wouldn't recommend taking him if there's other options.
Dr. Baines is a great guy. He is English so it is fun to listen to him talk the first couple of lectures. He explains the material very well. Every Bio 105 class is going to be difficult and this class is no exception. Dr. Baines gives you the material you need to do well so use it!!
Dr. Baines has very high expectations, and is very difficult to reach if you cant make his office hours. Volunteers to meet outside of said hours but never replies to emails. No extra credit even though other classes offer it, and has a serious case of power tripping over students. Nice guy, but offers no slack school work wise.
Did not enjoy the way he taught. Almost none of the stuff he had on the exams were on are on his PowerPoints but he would just talked about them in class instead expecting us to remember it. The textbook the most useful thing even though he tells us that we wont need it. On every exam some of his questions were out to trick us and make us do poorly
Biology 105 is a hard class, no doubt about it. During class, Dr. Baines usually just lectures. The slideshows are very detailed, and the tests are hard. However, Dr. Baines cares and wants to help. He's also pretty funny. Unless it's for your major, though, I wouldn't take it.
He was a great choice for BIO105.
Dr. Baines made lectures funny, even though they were long and intense some days, and made sure that his students weren't falling behind. Plus, if you've taken AP Bio this class is a breeze. My old notes almost matched Baines' slides exactly. Also, he runs the tutor center so he's really easy to talk to outside of class.
He was okay
Dr. Baines knows what he is talking about, but can be hard to relay the information back to students. His exams are difficult and his lectures can be extremely boring. There are a few group projects which are easy if you put in the work! I would recommend getting a different professor, but Dr. Baines isn't terrible if you have to take him.
He knows what he's talking about, but you still have to teach yourself everything. He's not great at teaching you what he knows. The tests are way too hard, even with hours of studying. The questions on exams are way too specific, and way more in-depth than what you actually learn.
He has many lectures posted and then reviews the same material in his live lectures rather than explaining. The tests were extremely difficult and had questions that were not mentioned in either type of lectures that were so specific.
Terrible. Worst course I have ever taken, not due to content but due to professor's lack of organization. Exams were terribly formatted, made more difficult than material was and covered mainly information not stressed in lectures. Prerecorded lectures were the only helpful thing, zoom lectures were a waste of time, did not help to better explain
I am going to start by saying I am finishing an entire semester of having Dr. Baines and I have no idea what he looks or sounds like. Whenever I emailed him asking questions I would have to wait hours upon hours for a response, and his response never helped me at all. Ended up asking all of my questions to my lecture professor instead. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Baines was a horrible professor. He is not understanding of situations that may come up and he takes days to respond to his email. He does not know how to relay information in lectures to help students understand him. His exams are way harder than what is taught and sometimes include things that aren't even in the notes.
Dr. Baines is a nice guy and clearly knows what he's talking about. But he is lecture heavy and moves fast. For a freshman-level course, it was difficult to follow along in and hard to sit there during lectures. For exams, I never felt prepared. I never knew what he wanted us to know with the very very few guidelines he would give us.
Professor Baines should not be teaching a Biology class. He had no outline or basis for exams and some questions on the exams we never once remotely talked about in class or in lecture notes. He makes his exams too difficult for a freshmen entry level class, there should be no reason the exam average is a 60 every time. Look over lecture slides.
Lee Baines is an okay, teacher. I understand and grasp every subject he taught. Problem is that he does not grade you on what you were taught by him or even what was on the slides. You need to do outside research on everything and PRAY you find the right stuff. Class average was a D- for every single exam. DO NOT take this professor. Save yourself
The tests were difficult but that is with every bio105 class. I would say sometimes his lectures got boring but overall wanted students to do well.
Great guy. If you go to MLC he is very helpful with any questions you have. Tests are very difficult and with the time given most people come right up to the end of class to finish them. He like to get caught up on one topic quite often as well.
Lee Baines is a nice person, and I think he does really want his students to do well. However, he has no clear outline for exams. Exams are very difficult and based on being able to apply the information from lecture combined with lots of outside information you are expected to just know somehow.
It is a pretty hard class with the first exam averaging like a 80%, the second a 69%, and the third exam another 80%. It's not clear what will be on the test the tests are designed for smart people who are just smart. LAB IS WORTH like 30% so make sure to do good in lab, you'll need it. Good guy though, very helpful during office hours.
Dr.Baines is a great lab professor. He sets out his expectations for each lab and clearly explains what each lab is about. He is also super great about answering any questions and is just overall a kind and caring guy. This lab is definitely not easy, but Dr.Baines tries his best to make things interesting and accessible for everyone.
Dr Baines was a good BIO 105 professor. He really wants his students to succeed, and you just have to be willing to put in the effort to do well in the class. The exams are tough, but if you do a good job preparing for them you should be fine. Also ask questions if you have them! He wants students to ask questions to make sure they're understanding
No clear outlines for what will be on exams, exams are very difficult with random things you didn't even know you had to know. Notes are not helpful and very vague. Lectures are long and boring of him just reading slides. Barely any assignments so tests are your grade. Save yourself do not take him.
I don't recommend taking this professor!!! All he does is read from a slideshow which is mostly all pictures making it difficult to go back and study off of. His exams are not on the stuff that he teaches from the slides. His averages for exams are all in the 60-70s. He gives nothing to review for exams. He also doesn't respond to emails quickly!!
He is never prepared for lab, always running late and never grades things on time. He waited till the last week of lab to grade everything, so you never know how you are doing.
The exams are full of information he's never talked about. He doesn't respond to emails. Doesn't create study guides and all the slides he goes over in lecture are just pictures with no writing on them so you can't really study. He's a nice guy so you don't want to hate him but he is honestly terrible at teaching. Don't recommend.
Heavy British accent that can be a little difficult to understand. Very different exams that often times are based on outside knowledge or information mentioned in lecture rather than material posted in the notes.
He is a nice guy but doesn't respond to emails and doesn't stick to the slideshows. He goes off topic a ton and includes information he mentions one time in his exams that are never mentioned in the slideshows. The slideshows are picture heavy and it makes it difficult to go back and study. Sit in front if you want to know whats going on.
You have to go to lectures to understand the slides, but honestly, not even a point because nothing he says relates to the tests.
He is an awesome professor. His lectures are very important to succeeding in his class, and you have to take notes and follow along to what he is saying outside of the slides, and you will do just fine in this course. He is very funny and nice and encourages learning
He's mentioned quite a few times how he failed biology classes back when he was in college.... This man is here for revenge
Exams are impossible to study for and are not on the material he actually teaches. He will include exam questions for a comment he made one time and didn't include in the slides. Taking notes is pointless because they don't help you study anyway. Very nice guy, but I would NOT take his class again.
Be prepared to be disappointed. You can go to all the study sessions and lectures and still not pass. His exams are comprised of NOTHING that was taught in lectures or info learned in HIS OWN study sessions. I thought I understood science after getting A's in Chem 103/4 but after taking this class my confidence is out the window.
No extra credit available like other bio 105 professors offer. Nothing that is on the slide shows or talked about is on exams. Impossible to study for. Even if 20+ hours of studying is done you will not recognize anything on the exam. No point to show up to his lectures and or study sessions because they won't help.
I love Baines! His British accent is so funny and keeps me engaged. He is always asking if anybody has questions and can explain it in a multitude of ways. He is a very caring professor, and I would take him again any day! But, his tests are difficult, so you need to do a lot of studying to succeed. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.
Do not take this professor if you don't have to. His exams are very difficult and the material is nothing talked about in class.
He's a great guy, but not a good teacher. The information he puts on the slideshows he just reads off for class, and they have nothing to do with the exam. He's somewhat caring for his students but not their grades. He also gives spontaneous assignments a few days before it's due. I would not take this professor if you had other options for Bio105.
He is a really sweet professor, and he genuinely cares about how you do in his class if you actually try your best. The content on his exams is very in depth and difficult though, and you really need show up to class or you'll miss a lot. He also likes to give a lot of in class activities for points, so I wouldn't recommend skipping.
He moves through slides very fast and situations on exams are nothing like he teaches.
This course is far too difficult for an intro to biology course. Lee Baines is not a good professor. His lectures are not helpful, and the material on his slides hardly appears on the exams. He is also not responsive with emails. If you have to take BIO 105, avoid him as your professor.
Do not take Lee Baines if you can help it. He is a nice guy but he does not answer email ever and his exams are extremely difficult with hardly any material that was actually taught on them. He moves very quickly and has random in class assignments so don't skip lecture.
His lectures are not the greatest for actually learning the material and he excludes about 40% of the information from the slideshow so you cannot go back and find it. Really the only way to learn the material is to go to his office hours, talk with classmates. He is probably the most difficult Bio105 prof. However, he is a very nice and caring guy
Baines was a great professor. I attended every class and went to SI. He was always very helpful, and it was obvious he wanted me to understand the material. This guy definitely does not deserve all the horrible reviews on here. The people that are leaving bad reviews do not study or go to class. Thats your own fault babe not his.
Great professor and a very nice person! Take him if you can. The people saying bad things do not apply themselves and claim that "nothing on the exams is what he talks about in class" Thats a stupid remark considering that there are multiple people who aced the exams all semester. I think its a problem with freshman work ethic not the teacher.
He doesn't really give you anything to study on, your grade is pretty much made up of 4 exams. very lecture heavy, he seems sweet but doesn't know how to teach students.
I cannot express enough how NICE Dr. Baines is. The class is hard, plain and simple, and it would be with any professor, yes he has high expectations for his students and too high sometimes. But he cares tremendously and will seek you out personally if you aren't doing well to see how he can help. Take the class with him if you can but work for it.
He is a great guy and cares for his students, but there are not many graded assignments other than exams and 2 group projects and weekly quizzes. There are no study guides for the exams and the exams are difficult. Definitely got to SI and utilize office hours.
Baines is a great person and wants his students to succeed. sometimes his expectations are a little to high for an already difficult class. almost all of your grade comes from 3 exams and the final which he doesn't give you a single study guide for. He is super knowledgeable and a fun guy but he makes his class a lot more challenging
tough class for freshman. lab is easy and is 25% of your grade. 3 exams are 40 multiple choice worth 80 points and 2 short answer questions worth 10 points. Studying with a group of people will help. 2 group projects, 5 in class assignments, and 10 online quizzes which are all grade boosters.
His Bio 306 lab was pretty easy compared to other biology labs, but I wish he had lectured a bit more because I struggled with class exam material related to the lab since he doesn't explain much. If you want to study extra hard in Genetics class, then he's fine to take. He also waits till the last week of the semester to grade everything.
PLEASE find a better professor.Baines was horrible. As a freshman, I thought he wouldn't be as bad as the reviews, but HE IS. Exams are SO unbelievably hard (even studying 15+ hours). Class average was around a 50% each exam, and he is always oddly proud of it! If you can't leave this class, STUDY. Start early, get help. You'll definitely need it.
I saw the reviews and thought he couldn't be that bad, but he was worse than I expected. There are 3 exams throughout the class, which are way too difficult. The average was always around 60%. He offers no extra credit or curving of grades, and the assignments that are not exams count for very few points. Save yourself and switch professors
Overall, he is a good professor. He teaches concepts and explains them to the detail we are required to know. However, he makes his test kind of difficult using difficult wording to ask the questions. The final makes up for his exams and is farely easy.
He is on the tougher end of professors, but it is possible to get an A in his class with a moderate amount of studying. It is essential to understand everything in the slideshow, even if it seems insignificant. If you have the slideshows down, the tests will be easy. One bad test won't define your semester. The final is also really easy.
Super difficult tests that rarely relate to the course material. Expects you to take a “higher lever of understanding” and put it towards your test. Dont skip lectures and go to office hours. Overall, a good person and good teacher
He is a good professor if you care enough to put effort into his class. Note taking and paying close attention during lectures is very helpful. He always answers questions and encourages students to ask them. His exams are pretty challenging, so be prepared to study. Utilize his office hours if you have additional questions.
In the semester that I had professor Banes I found it very difficult to follow the slides and apply them to his exams. If I'm being honest neither the slides nor the professor prepared you for the experience that you will have on the exams.
First off, professor Baines wouldn't respond to any of my emails. This made it very difficult to communicate with him. The exams were very random, he did a poor job at preparing us for them. He gave us little to no review materials, when asked what to review he responded with " all of it." If you want to succeed in this course do not take him.
Professor Baines is great! He is funny and is always happy to help. His exams are tough, but if you study and put in the effort you will do well. There are online quizzes and a few group projects throughout the semester. He posts his slides and practice exams on canvas. I also highly recommend going to his SI!
Lectures had a lot of information you had to memorize, and you didn't quite know exactly what to study for the test because anything he said in the lecture could be on the exams. Attendance is important because there are in-class assignments that can randomly affect your grade. Overall, this class was pretty difficult because of all these factors.
This class can be tough with it being so lecture heavy. Other reviews might say he's bad but he's a really nice guy and he just does a lot of lecturing. Go to SI because it is super super helpful and make sure you're studying consistently and you will be fine.
He is fine for lab. Take notes on any pre-lab lectures, and you will do just fine on the lab exams. Also ask him to go over what you should know for the exams and he will go through it. Took forever to grade stuff, but he is a fair grader and will leave comments. Very approachable to ask questions to in lab as well.
Very lecture-heavy and a thick British accent. Do not skip class because there are plenty of in-class homework assignments that can alter your grade if you miss. Hard to expect what will be on exams as he says anything in lecture can be on them. 3 exams, 1 group project, and 1 final.
He's a great person, very sweet and funny but a horrible professor. He will not work with you if you are sick and will say to drag yourself there and won't let you reschedule stuff with him. He tests you on stuff THAT ISN'T BIO 105 MATERIAL. He forgets this is a level 105, and not his upper level sciences. My advice: take anyone BUT HIM,
Nice guy, not a good professor
All you really need to know is his exams are hard and you aren't really prepared well for them.
Admits his tests have averages of Cs and Ds but refuses to change his lecturing style or the exam itself to help students succeed. Was kind of rude to me about missing after being in the er with my boyfriend all night. Tried to justify Rosalind Franklins work getting stolen. Very helpful if you have questions. throws group projects out of nowhere
He gets a bad rep but isn't as bad as ppl say. Not very structured but workload is easy(one of my easiest labs). Three lab exams all pretty easy if you pay attention to pre-lab lectures. If you ask questions, he's good at explaining + helping clarify. Only complaint is slow to grade some assignments + little all over the place but would recommend.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O! And on his farm he had a cow, E-I-E-I-O! With a moo-moo here and a moo-moo there, Here a moo, there a moo, Everywhere a moo-moo, Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O!
Does a terrible job of explaining the content, and the lectures are very messy. Half of the class is just deciphering if what he says is actually important for the exams or not. The provided exam preparation material is incorrect. He is a good human being just not a good professor.
Although his exams are extremely difficult, I've found his course to be really engaging. If you're actively paying attention and listening in class, professor Baines will notice and appreciate that. He's a very caring person, but like I previously stated, his exams are very challenging. People typically average 70-80%, so if you take him, STUDY!!
nice enough guy but I wouldn't recommend him if there's other choices. His tests are pretty hard and he has a lot of in class surprise "quiz's". If he's your last choice it will be fine but best be studying for every test.
Very nice and funny guy but not a good professor. If you have him, good luck :( he is very hard grader and has a thick British accent. his tests are VERY hard and you have to know everything said in lecture. He says most of his averages are bad, and on exam two he even said he expects to see mostly Cs but won't change his lecturing style. GOOD LUCK
I do not recommend him as a professor but he is a good guy. He doesn't give as much prep/info on exams like other professors. I was stuck w him and was worried when I saw his ratings and it ended up not being as bad as people said. Just do your work and go to class bc in class assignments help your grade a lot in the end. you will be fine, lock in.
