Funny guy, easy to understand, exams weren't that bad, lots of discussion
very good and interesting. exams were fair.

made class interesting to listen to
An excellent speaker. Makes class fun and very interesting. I had this class at 9:50 in the morning, and this man didn't make me think how tired I was once. The test are fair, and his web site is helpful. You don't have to buy a book, it's all on the web!

awesome class, very enthusiastic, humorous guy. certainly a pleasure to be in class with. recitations are a joke. gotta go to class cause material is unavailable otherwise (no book)
This is an awesome professor. He is interesting, funny, and involves his students. Even a huge intro class was engaging and fun. Never looked at my watch, actually enjoyed going to class. Very approachable, helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.
i loved having him for intro to soc. he's really funny and energetic and likes to get the class involved in discussions. material is really interesting and exams are fair. i highly reccomend him!!!
very interesting, funny and overall great teacher :)
very interesting class...fun n entertaining prof
this is the best professor i ever had.You can tell he loves to teach. He is really funny and the class is very relaxed. No papers, just one easy presentation. 2 easy midterms and one final
Soc was one of my favorite classes here on the banks. He was funny and a little crazy. Class was easy, and a great elective.
Great teacher! Class was never borning, you can tell he loves what he does.
awesome teacher. Never boring. Hes funny and cute. Best teach for intro to sociology.
if you don't get an A you're an idiot!!!
Hes sooooooo Awsome. He's a good teacher who loves what he does. He makes you love it too.
Read alot of long articles and had to email all readings, wrote one 10-15 pages paper and gave a presentation at the end of the semester. No test, relatively easy class for 400 level
best class i ever had, he's straight foward easy to understand and loves what he does.
Very funny guy! Easy class. You can miss a few classes and still get a B or an A. He doesn't make you buy the book!!!
awesome teacher
Excellent teacher and high energy lectures.
my dad is the best teacher there, if you dont take his class, your a fool because he is the nicest teacher and he definitely knows what he's talking about.
this is the easiest class at rutgers. if you dont get an A your just simply an idiot. its 2 easy. n the class is mad easy.
I HATe rutgers, but he is the nicest professor here and very entertaining lecturer, THE ONLY PROFESSOR I CAN ACTUALLY SAY THAT I LIKED SINCE IVE ENTERED THIS SCHOOL.....take this class its very good
This guy is awesome! He throws around jokes all the time. On good days, which are usual, most of the students are laughing. He loves what he does and it really shows. This is the one class I enjoy going to don't like to miss!
Besides Clarke being absolutely adorable he's a great teacher! Tests are completely multiple choice and a piece of cake. He loves what he does and likes to have a good time. I recomend this class to everyone.
Clarke is SO funny and adorable. The class is easy and interesting. You just laugh the whole period. Tests are relativly easy and I enjoyed going to class. Take his class!
He is extremely funny, the lectures are great except his tests are hard and kinda tricky. doesn't give good notes.
Clarke creates a fun interesting environment that keeps the student interested in whatever he's saying
You go into this class believing that it's an easy A. His style of teaching makes it seem so--until you take his exams. While he is an energetic lecturer, his notes are sketchy to say the least, and his exams are far too tricky for a 101 course. In all honesty, he is overrated.
Best professor I've had at Rutgers.. he makes lectures fun.
He's jokes are corney, he spends to much time in class trying to act funny rather than teaching. He's notes are ridiculous and do not help on the test. TA's aren't that great either. I regret taking his class
This man is awesome. I love his lectures. Though his exams are hard, and I feel it is almost impossible to get an A, this class is worth taking as a fun class. You learn a lot, and if you can afford a B, take it
Guys a complete D*ck.....notes suck and I honestly think the reason he does not have a book is because he only want's his sh*tty useless overeducated opinion to be heard.
Class was pretty enjoyable. The lack of a book sometimes makes it difficult, but if you take good notes, you'd do fine. Class also included a recitation period, which was useless. It was pretty much an extra period to listen to kids give oral presentations (yes I had to do a presentation on a topic)
i dont know why people are saying the tests are tricky, i barely studied and got an A on the first 2 exams
This guy is a mess!! He is very unorganized, goes on about stuff irrelevant to class material, thinks he's extremely funny which becomes to be very annoying, tests are tricky, and my TA is very nice but also very unclear. Also, reading assignment are extensively long & boring!!
you go in there and pat urself on the back for finding such an ez class after hearing his funny introduction to the class, his engaging lectures, exstensive & thorough review sheets. Then the exams roll around and your screwed w/ tricky abstract questions. Beware
Let me tell you about this guy, HE CRAZY!!! Literally he's nuts! Anyways...his class is not as good as everyone made it seem...i didnt ever wanna go, he picks on ppl (who does tha? this aint high school), his tests are very tricky, the TA's are the only reason i did good in this class.
Yea, so I studied my balls off for a class that shouldn't require you to do so. If you do study, his questions on exams can be quite abstract and indirectly opinionated. That's bullsh*t. He thinks his ideas on panic and opinions are absolute, that's bullsh*t. Don't buy it, or listen to him promo his book.
he is awesome! i love his class! he keeps me awake and i actually learn! gr8 professor! take him! :)
He is very entertaining, his lectures aren't too bad. There is no reading except for one smaller, managable novel. The TA was useless. However, his exams are a little tricky. Make sure you understand that concepts behind what he is teaching. Pay attention to examples he gives in class
I LOVE this teacher. He makes class so fun. Yes his tests are a bit tricky but if you pay attention in class and to his examples you will do fine. If you are one of those students who do no like to go to class DO NOT take this class because the tests are about what he talks in class, his examples. Besides that its a really FUN & GREAT class to take
Amazing teacher! makes corny jokes. that are actually pretty funny he gives 3 exams that are all mult choice. 30 ques (max). but his lectures are based on the readings so do the reading or youll be lost and his exam ques come from lecture so if ur the type not to go to lecture dont take his class. he posts the notes online. overall hes a great prof
Good professor. Makes class interesting, but you have to go to lecture to do well on tests because the tests are all about examples he gives in lecture. Fun class, I learned alot and wasn't bored during lectures.
Great prof & lecturer. Very entertaining & learn alot from class. Class was too early, so getting to class was harder. attendance is MANDATORY, go to EVERY class bc exams r from examples; may even give freebies for exams in class. Posts notes online but vague if you dont go to class. NO TEXT needed, all lecture material. exams are MC (35/35/30)

this guy is a fun lecturer, but honestly i cant beleive the bs hes trying to teach us. his articles and the stuff hes trying to teach us completely bogus. his ideas on panic are completely ridiculous and his figures that support his views are exactly what he talks badly about. dont take take this class if ur expecting an easy a. his questions are
Lectures are amusing, no textbook means it's a cheaper course, but his relative disorganization leaves you asking "is this really sociology?" The subject matter seemed haphazard. Exams are easy if you can apply what you've learned to fictional scenarios. Second exam was heavily reading-based while the first wasn't. I felt misled by the bait+switch.
The prof isn't so bad except for the fact that he is pretty unorganized. His class doesn't require a book which could be a bad thing if you don't attend his classes. The exams are only 25-30 questions multiple choice but some have more than one right answer.
Awesome guy, lectures are very interesting and mostly discussions. exams are tricky because he makes up examples, but they aren't too hard if you think carefully. Go to class, he uses lecture examples on tests. no textbook!!
He makes class very interesting, but there is NO TEXTBOOK, which means you just have to make sure you're super clear on the terms and ideas, even if you discuss them with your TA in recitation. He doesn't take attendance, but you cant do well if you don't go to class since there's no book. Also, exams are hard/tricky, only out of 25 or 30 points :(
Clarke is a pretty fun lecturer, although I think sociology is bs. Though he makes class interesting, the readings are really tedious and tested on a lot. No textbook makes it harder to study. Though no textbook, there is a TON of online readings. Easy B, but very hard to get an A.
Prof Clarke is one of my favorite professors at RU. His class is straight forward so you need to go. No textbook which is a joy and the readings are easy. He is a lot of fun and extremely funny. It is NOT an easy A, but the curve is very generous. www.leeclarke.com !!!
Clarke is a cool guy. Class is usually pretty interesting and with the help of the TAs this class is a easy B. Getting an A is not so easy because he doesnt round a B to an A but there is no book and classes are short and fun.
The material covered is very boring and unrelated, although pretty easy. The professor is a cool/funny/interesting guy and it is very difficult to get an A on the exams, although a B is very easy to obtain. No text book is used so class is mandatory.
Great teacher, love his personality, i learned a lot from this class. No textbook which i find pretty cool
Definitely take sociology with Clarke!! Lectures are so much fun-really makes the material come alive. He is the nicest person, so laid-back and relaxed. It is absolutely possible to get an A. Doesn't use a textbook, posts readings online that relate to what he's lecturing about-they're the most fun, non-traditional readings for a class you'll have
Really funny professor and the class is really easy if you go to class! Exams are tricky though, so you really need to study and know the material. Very helpful if you go to his office hours. Class is fun and interesting. no textbook :) definitely recommend!
Definitely a great professor! Makes the material very interesting, as he relates it to everyday things. I like how he acknowledges that we aren't all sociology majors. Clear material and fun to go to class. He's kinda funny and just seems like an overall good guy. Actually cares about his students. Tests are kinda hard, but just study hard.
Just because he's loud and does stupid accents, doesn't mean he is a good prof. He was unclear and honestly insane. The only thing I learned from him was "earthquakes are caused by little devils in the earth that jump up and down" (Clarke). This course was horrible.
You really need to go to all the classes (I didnt) to get a really good grade because there's no textbook and he doesnt post all of his presentations online. However, in the end he put the final grades on a curve so i did pretty good in this class.
Clarke is a nice guy, but he's pretty hard to understand with his southern accent and there's no book at all so you have to pay attention and write notes which is hard because of the way he speaks. his tests are tricky, there's more than one right answer which is ridiculous. i'd suggest taking this if you want a B or C in sociology.
I liked this class a lot. The lectures were interesting and he's a very dynamic lecturer. There is no book so going to class is a must but the exams are based exactly on what he said in class, no tricks. There is a very generous curve for B's but getting an A will require a small amount of effort.
he sucked. his first exam was abnormally easy and he tricks you into a false sense of security to do bad on the second exam. do not use intro to soc as a gpa booster. i would have gotten a 3.5 if not for his class
He's a nice guy and an interesting lecturer, pacing back and forth through the room getting everyone involved, not unlike a comedian with an audience. For me his tests a bit hard because I second guess myself often. He can take a while to get to his actual point; this can be a bit annoying if you are taking notes. But he's a good teacher anyway!
so much reading and its all hard to understand articles. going to class is pretty useless if you don't read because he doesn't really explain anything well at all and you basically have to learn all the material yourself. he's kinda funny but also annoying. don't take this class with him unless you absolutely have to. it ain't easy
I took this class to fulfill an elective requirement, and ended up genuinely enjoying it. He doesn't use a book, so lecture is a must. He thoroughly explains things and is very interesting to listen to. His exams require you to apply concepts to new exams, not just spit back information. An A is definitely attainable if you go to lecture and read.
One of those professors where there are several correct answers on the test but he'll only choose one. Doesn't have a book, so you have to pick up on the most minute facts he spouts. Wouldn't recommend this unless you like puzzling curves and even more puzzling tests.
Great class, very intellectual professor. You have to understand what he tells you during class and exams are pretty easy. Didn't get perfect scores on my exams but usually just one or two points off. Pleasurable experience.
one of the easiest classes you can take at Rutgers. I think I got 2 questions wrong the whole semester. Dont take notes...just listen to what he is saying and understand it. The class is interesting if you give it a chance. as far as the articles, some were pretty lengthy but I was able to read all of them the night before. fun class. easy A.takeit
Must go to lecture. Entertaining lecturer though. Make sure to listen and understand his points. He's not always the clearest, but just do the study guides and read the articles the day before and you should do well.
Really entertaining guy, insanely fun, interactive lectures. The one class I honestly looked forward to going to. He doesn't go too in depth in class, but if you need help, he'll certainly give it.
Funny professor. No textbook. Class is not mandatory. Kind of vague topics but not terribly hard to understand and do well on the exam. But you must read ALL the readings and if you pay attention in class you'll do fine.
Entertaining at times, but the information was dry. he makes it seem like youll do well on the exams by saying theyre easy but he makes them really tricking. all exams have confusing questions, especially the last one which was harder than the rest. attendance isnt mandatory but you should probably go bc his slides dont help much. average class.
If you are looking for an easy sociology class, I do not recommend taking it with this Professor. questions on exams are confusing and difficult.
Such a bizarre guy. But I honestly enjoyed his class a lot. He is not as hard as some may seek him to be. Go to class and LISTEN and then the exams will be easier. I got a B+ with studying the night before for each. But def gotta go to all classes, as I did.
EASY EASY EASY. Go to class, people. You're parents pay for you to be here to go to class. If you do that, you're golden. Just listen, spend 20 minutes on the readings, and you'll get an A. But you need to go to class! You can't expect to just enroll and automatically get an A, thats stupid.
Very entertaining and interesting professor. No textbook so have to attend every class and take notes. While it is a fun class, exam questions are tricky and confusing, so I would recommend taking another professor, as there are easier.
Clarke is a thinker, so be prepared to think of examples of what he's talking about. People say he's hard, but you just need to listen to him speak, read the articles and go to class. If you don't like the subject, DO NOT TAKE this class.
He is so funny and passionate about the subject. No textbook. Shows videos, uses good examples. Lots of reading per week but it's interesting stuff. Recitation is a good reviewclarification for lecture. Tests include things he said in class. PLEASE take this class with him.
Very nice guy and answers questions when asked directly. The class is difficult if you do not think along the same lines as him.
Very easy class. Exams are really easy. I got a 94 and a 96. I didn't take the final yet because the semester haven't ended yet, but I know that I will do well on the final. Also does research like a scientist.
People should definitely take his class. It is an easy A. He is extremely helpful and his exams are a piece of cake. In addition, he does research in his own research lab in this school.
This is an easy class for someone willing to do the readings, go to class, and take notes. His lectures are a little vague but the readings put them in perspective. If you can take recitation with Hofstra do it! She knows her stuff and prepares you extremely well for the tests. This class is the next best thing after dance appreciation.
You will need to attend lectures (although he does not take attendance) in order to pass since he does use text books. All his tests and quizzes in recitation are based on in-class lectures and assigned readings. The materials aren't difficult and the readings are pretty easy. Will recommend.
Great professor. Knows his material very well and delivers it in a fun, easy way. As help you so much and its just overall a great class. Tests are tough but he curves well. Recommend Clarke.
Don't skip class if you expect to just get an easy grade. He's a bit clearer in lecture and recitation helps. His exams are tough though but curve is generous.
Professor Clarke lectures with an nervous, manic energy. In a good way! He's very intelligent, both the lectures and the recitations encourage critical thinking, and the topics are interesting. The quizzes can be pretty comprehensive and lecture-based, but are easy if you do the readings and attend his classes.
He doesn't have a textbook and majority of the questions he asks on the exam are similar to the examples he gives in class, so attendance isn't mandatory but definitely recommended. He's also hilarious and goes about lectures in a joking yet informative manner. His exams are easy, I don't know how anyone could get below a B on any of them.
If you want to feel like an audience member to a children's show, this professor is for you. He is constantly talking in "funny" voices, which stray from the lecture. He might be a qualified Sociologist, but he should not be a professor. Everything you learn will be through all of the readings you have to do. If you don't do them, you will fail.
You need to go to class, so schedule your block accordingly so so dont skip. DEM READINGS DOE. The readings are long--and boring. And long, like 10-15 pages. And there are targeted questions from the readings so you cant just glaze 'em over. He's a great guy but the class has little to no structure--thats why you need to go to lecture.
GPA BOOSTER !!! Loved class !!!!
His class is easy, BUT you have to read the articles which can be long, but are interesting AND you have to go to lecture and recitation. If you do all three of those things, you'll get the easy A. If you don't, you'll probably do bad. It's like high school, do what you're supposed to do and you'll pass. Can take notes with basic notebook.
Lee Clarke was one of the best professors I have had at the university. His lectures were engaging and got you actively thinking outside of the box. If you are involved in the learning process you will surely get an A. Do the readings and GO TO LECTURE; this is where he clarifies topics. He is pretty funny and inspirational.
Such an interesting guy. This is good because he makes the material comes to life. He uses fun pictures and videos to make students understand concepts. Make sure you keep up with readings and review notes. Exams require you to understand concepts in order to apply it to examples he comes up with.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He's one of those professors who really makes you think about the issues at large. I even found myself talking about his lectures to my friends. It's rare that you find a professor who really makes you care about the course material. Do the readings and take notes and you should be good for class. Also, NO TEXTBOOK!
He made me crack up in every lecture. He's very clear in explaining the topics and there are no surprises on the exams. Recitation is a huge part of your grade so you must show up and read BEFORE each recitation! There will be pop quizzes, so don't risk not reading. The material was very interesting and I was never bored in this class.
He was a nice guy however his class was not a GPA booster as some people are saying. He was sort of hard to follow through in lecture tbh.
Highly recommend this professor for Intro to Soc! His lectures are very laidback and enjoyable, but his exams are heavily based on what he says since he provides very little notes and doesn't use a textbook. If you do the readings and understand the basic concepts he discusses, the exams are very straightforward and you will pass.
This is a great class to take for a GPA booster. No textbook for this class since he emphasize the research that he does in his lab. If you understand the things that he does in his lab, then an A is obtainable. Got a 95, 95, and 96 on the exams respectively. People probably find this class difficult since they do not understand his research.
Great GPA booster. Loves to talk about the research that he does in his fellow post-docs in the lab. 60% of the exam is about his research. Focus on the details of his research when studying for exams. Everyone at Rutgers who is interested in research should take this class.
Clarke is a top notch researcher with undergraduates, graduates, post-docs, and possibly some high school students in his lab. With that being said, his exams are a little bit more difficult than other Intro to Sociology classes. But if you are attentive and find the subject interesting then you will be fine. A must take for every Rutgers student.
Aced it. Did well on the first exam and final. But messed up on the second exam since there were more tricky questions. Will take again.
Remarkable, amazing. This is a must take for freshmen since its purely research-based. This class looks great on the resume since it provides you with research experience. Aresty probably designed the syllabus with Clarke and funded the class.
A real gem. Everyday I look forward to this class since Clarke talks about his research that he does with his post-docs and grad students in the lab. Exams are purely based on his current projects.
Very nice and funny man, but he makes you read very boring and long readings before each lecture. For a class at Rutgers that is normally described as an 'easy A', this is not the amount of work I would consider an easy A.
I don't think his teaching is clear. His assigned readings are super long and all he does in lecture is ramble on and on and on. His exam questions are poorly written and ambiguous. I read everything and still didn't do well on the exam.
This class was a mistake to take. The first exam went horribly even after studying for many hours and attending all classes. The questions were not fair and did not test our understanding of what were expected to know.
he's definitely changed the format of his class and you just have to realize the exams seem to be more on the readings than concepts in class. you can't be expecting to know everything. he's an amazing professor and he's more than he makes himself out to be. his references to seemingly irrelevant topics actually connect nicely & are memorable.10/10
hes also known as chip apparently
Do not take!!! Definitely not an easy A. Rambles a lot during lectures, a lot of the time the stuff he talks about has nothing to do with material. Reading are super long, exams arent clear, and he isnt clear on explaining what youll be tested on. Overall definitely a mistake taking the class, and I regret every second of it, STAY AWAY!!
everyone who is complaining needs to either seek out help from the great TA's or the god-like professor himself. I think he changed the format of his class because past reviews say his course is research based but he's doing research on the sociological aspects of politics with science so I don't think he's gonna teach a soc intro class about that.
He hates Nazis and DEMONS.
Overall, not what i expected of the class. I would definetly recommend taking it with a real professor like springer. this man does not test you based on your actual knowledge of the material.
The test questions are ambiguous and you don't really know what he's going to test you on. I don't recommend unless you have prior knowledge of the course.
A lot of the students are saying this professor is bad. But I will be as blunt and offensive as possible. Your inability to fully read and understand his test questions as well as material, is NOT a flaw on the professor's part. Professor Clarke may be getting old, but he is knowledgeable. 3 tests, non-cumulative; recitation; readings online.
Prof Clarke is okay. Sometimes rambles too much but u need to go to the lectures. If u are looking for an easy A class, this is not for u. Lots of online readings and they matter. Whats going to be tested isnt very clear. There are many courses that are much easier than sociology 101 in Rutgers. Do not take if u don't have to.
If you want a good grade dont take this class. The exam questions are ambiguous and difficult to do well on. I studied a lot for the exams and didnt do too well because the test questions are not based on the content he teaches so regardless of how well you understand the material it is difficult to do well. Your grade is up to luck basically.
he gives course grades based on the top grade of your class, i had an 85 but still ended up with a B flat. his lectures are mandatory since he bases his test questions off of them. tests are insanely hard and make you think WAY outside the box just to get the right answer. dont take this class unless you really have to, other than that goodluck
very nice person, very interesting lectures but lacks a clarity. A LOT of readings. You really have to show up to class to do well, but that shouldn't be too hard since lectures are really interesting. Problem is that exams are really confusing. This class is def not an easy A.
you really have to work for a good grade in this class and have to attend lectures because the tests are specifically based on lecture material. also he gave me a B by mistake but I emailed and he bumped it up to a B+, he's the OG
He doesn't provide a book so you have to attend his lectures. His lectures are hard to follow and he rambles. Would not recommend. If you want to actually learn about sociology, choose a different professor.
NO EXTRA CREDIT AT ALL which is fine, but he literally puts such strange questions on the exam. They aren't too bad if you do the readings, + recitation is 15% of your grade, but the odds of actually getting an A are slim to none. If you want an A, don't take this class. He's not a bad guy but the lectures are hard to take notes on.
It is hard to get an A. Tests are eh. Take it to fulfill a req if u want but don tthink youll get an A. Recitation is 15% which is a booster
Prof Clarke's teaching style is non-traditional. He is a very interesting guy but you have to write down most of what he says because he will put random questions on the test that he only talks about in lecture. Make sure you know the concepts because the test is applying those concepts to examples.
He makes the exams difficult for no reason. Studying your notes and powerpoints only helps 50% of the time. It's very hard to get an A in this class and you have to attend lecture everyday if you want a B or C. It is also hard understanding what he saying sometimes and most of the time questions on exams come from what he says and not the slides.
Professor Clarke is one of the most caring professors I have ever had. He is always willing to go above and beyond for his students and aims at helping as much as possible. He is a hilarious guy, I cannot recommend him enough. If you take anyone's sociology class at Rutgers, let it be his.
Do not take this professor! Nice guy but he doesnt know how to teach. He mumbles and doesnt have any clear structure to his lectures. Slides dont have any content on them and he doesnt use a textbook. Very tangential in the way he talks and drones on about things (such as demons) that have no relevance to the class. Exams are difficult for no reaso
How do you define incompetence? I define it as Lee Clarke. There is no real learning in this class. He openly cares very little about that anyway. Go to class and listen tho cuz some of his ramblings will appear on the exam.
We were only graded on quizzes and recitation. He has a monotone voice, but he is funny and caring. His slides can be very vague so it's important that you show up and use your TA to your advantage.
First of all, Clarke is funny, but he is quite unserious. He starts the semester chill but as you progress it gets annoying. I expected it to be an easy A, but I needed a lot of note taking. He drags the whole lecture but only spend like half time. The quizzes might trip you up and AGAIN, if you don't pay take notes, it may not end up being as easy
