funny guy!!! He's acually really funny and smart!! Only thing is that his teaching ways are not that clear and you have to review the book. He cares about his students and is very understanding. CURVES LIKE CRAZY although tests are hard. He's great just not the best chem teacher but he makes the class fun!!
I liked him as a teacher, definitely better and easier to understand then the Orgo teacher I have right now. I wish he tought organic chemistry here.
Great teacher, explains concepts very well. He really understands organic chemistry at a fundamental level and can answer any question. Tests are challenging, but in a good way.
Biggest jerk I know. Only fun part is when his voice cracks! Arrogant and does very little to help students. Makes inappropriate comments to students at the bar. Creepy all around. Recommend transferring schools before taking him!
He knows how to teach Organic chemitstry II. He is very helpfull and he is always there for you. However, his exams are superrrrrrrrrr hard!!! You will learn in his class, but you might not get the grade that you want unless you burn your eyelashes studying(even then is not sure). I f you want to learn take it, if you only want a very good grade do
Dr.Lee is an awsome professor. He made things clear in his lectures. I do recommend to read over the text before going into the class which will help you understand lectures better. Dr.Lee is willing to help you understand stuff if you go into his office. He made me to enjoy Orgo and so will you when you take his class :)
My class was chemistry-challenged so the curve was ~71% was an A. He wasn't a bad teacher at all because the material itself was just infuriating. He'll help you outside of class if you need it. Voice cracks a lot too which adds some humor to otherwise boring lectures.
He's really funny and sometimes inappropriate. He's clear and works through examples in class. As long as you keep up with the work, then you'll do fine. I am actually going to try to take Chem231 (Orgo) with him next semester.
I don't know what these people are on - worst professor! Never told you your grades after tests, impossible to understand basic concepts - tests are impossible and focus solely on the "Princeton method" - Hi we're U of M students working full time taking the class at night - don't have 3,000 hours to study! Stay away at all cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Decent lecturer, decent guy. I learned a fair amount of organic chemistry. However, I can't recommend him. Here's why: His exams are RIDICULOUSLY hard, and he brags about how hard they are and how he makes them impossible on purpose. The practice exams resemble the actual ones only in that they're printed on paper.
Tests are seriously impossible. I hope there is a huge curve at the end or I am in trouble. I am a straight A student so I have put a lot of time into this class and I am still very confused. I agree about the practice tests..they are completely different than the actual exam. I do NOT recommend taking him for org chem.
I am currently taking Dr Lee for Orgo I and have really enjoyed having him as a professor. As long as you attend all classes and take good notes, you'll be fine. Textbook is pretty useless, I've gotten B's on exams all year and didnt open the book once. The Klein book helps a lot tho. Overall, pretty straight forward porfessor. Very funny and loves
This is for orgo I lab as this prof was the coordinator. Lab is lab, it's 3 hrs/week. If you are given good procedures it's not too hard. Post lab Qs are hard and only somewhat relate to what happens in lab. Midterm and final are, as always for lab, very difficult; luckily all are MC. Curve at least 6%. Much depends on the TAs
He is a fun lecturer, however you won't be able to get an A in this class unless this is the only class you are taking in a semester. The TAs and the professor seem enjoying taking points away. The lectures do not help you prepare for the exams. If you have choice, stay away from this man. STAY AWAY.
Good class and really clear lectures. Homework is an easy way to make points but tests are really hard, though the curve helps a lot. Great teacher who explains the concepts very well.
Definitely try to avoid taking Gen Chem II lab with him. His lectures always seemed good when you were in class, but later realized that they were completely unhelpful. Lab reports were impossible and the TAs know absolutely nothing and are worse at Chemistry than most of the students. Friedman is a thoroughly unhelpful professor. Avoid!
A wonderful teacher and should be teaching lectures, but unfortunately his exams were extremely difficult (looking at past exams didn't help at all).
Dr Lee is hilarious! He was a good lecturer who always allowed time for questions. However, his tests are very tricky, and it's important to study A LOT and know the material inside out. Luckily there is a huge curve, so as long as you get above the average you'll be okay. He made me actually like chemistry!
Dr. Lee is a great lecturer, but his tests are extremely difficult. You realize that his lecture notes don't help very much when it comes to the exams. We also had a terrible TA. Unless you're good at math/logic, you should try to pick a different professor.
I thought he was the most interesting teacher ever. He made chemistry really fun! Unlike some other commentators I thought his tests were very straight forward. You have to study a little and attend all of his lectures to understand the material, but he is an EXCELLENT teacher!
Nice guy who is willing to help his students but exams are IMPOSSIBLE and lecture notes/examples don't help at all because he just shows easy examples in class and then throws the hardest most complicated problems at you on the exams. Take someone else if possible.
Seriously avoid him if you can. If you are naturally gifted in chemistry you will be fine. Most students do not do well with him. The exams really are a wash. I have never had exams that bad in my college career. The problems he does in class are easy, but the ones on exams are insane. He teaches 3x more info than the book does.it is not worth it
Dr. Lee is a really nice guy and a great lecturer. He's clear and knows what he's talking about. the tests are not that bad really. He has good online help and teaches to the exams. The book is barely needed. Definitely go to lecture everyday. If you do, exams are fine.
Worst human being in life. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. I got a good grade in the class but that's because I worked my a#% off all semester. He is extremely rude and really does not give a crap about his students. People have actually cried after going to his office hours.
His tests are extremely unfair, and are never similar to what he does in class. He is easy to understand and is extremely helpful. The book isn't needed at all if you know what you're doing. His past exams give you an idea on the difficulty level, but usually don't give you accurate topics.
I would definitely not suggest Dr. Friedman to anyone who isn't amazingly talented in chemistry. He gives very easy example in class then murders your grade on the exams. He does have online homework which can pull up your grade, but definitely not by much. I would warn any other students to stay away from this teacher if you want a good G.P.A.
Wasn't planning on commenting, but when I saw that professor Friedman was rated so low, i was so confused. He is literally the best professor I have had in college thus far. I have taken many science classes, and he is the best that I have had. Very very hard, but if you put in the effort you have a shot. Expects a lot, but also teaches you a lot.
My worst experience in a whole academic career! Instead of teaching like this, better don't teach at all! This class had almost dissipated my respect to the subject (chemistry); and this is scary! I really felt orphaned in the class, perhaps because I used to see the professor for about 40 min. a week for a jet-fast discussion of the upcoming lab.
He taught this class like everyone in it was a chemistry major. I was pregnant when I took his lecture and when I called him the morning of an exam to say that I was too sick to make it, he said I could come the next day at 7am only with documentation from a doctor to be able to make it up. He's not as flexible with making it up like he says he is.
He makes the exam extremely difficult and even jokes about it in class. He speaks so quickly about each subject you barely have time to comprehend what what he is talking about when taking notes. the textbook is necessary and worth reading inside and out to get a decent grade in the class.
Not a good teacher if you need reinforcement. Orgo is not a joke and you need a teacher that won't just teach and expect you to learn unless you really take the time. Other teachers are MUCH better at getting the material across to students, this isn't one of them.
Awful, avoid his class at all costs. Ruined my GPA, took my time away from other classes. I learned more in the GSSs than in his lecture. Expectations are ridiculous. Grade depends on whether you've taken Chem AP or not. If yes, then its an A or a B, or not, its guaranteed below a C+.
I had zero previous experience with chem before this class, but I still got an A-. No doubt he is the most difficult gen chem professor, and you will have to work very hard to get an A or even a B+. I studied the book outside of class and went to GSS. His lectures are sorta hard to follow so reading the book helps a lot. It's not impossible :)
He really gives you every resource to pass. The tests are hard but it is always stuff you have learned and gone over. His class is set up very well with a lot of practice problems. GSS is very helpful. He is very good at explaining things so office hours are very helpful as well. Awesome curve for tests so just worry about being at the average.
The class is hard, but chemistry is for most people. Be sure to go over practice problems and understand them. I never went to GSS or office hours and did fine. He is kind of hilarious.
I didn't learn anything in this lab. It really depends on your TA but I never saw Professor Friedman, except for one time. Be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Dr. Friedman always goes above and beyond for his students. I emailed him once on a Saturday and received a lengthy response within the hour. He does exam review sessions online and you can ALWAYS find a way to get your questions answered if you are willing to reach out. GSS is a huge help!
such a nice guy and extremely intelligent professor and lecturer. he's probably the best orgo 1 teacher
Dr. Friedman is a great professor. He is able to explain orgo concepts very well and uses helpful analogies. He is also very funny and going to his lectures was almost fun. His tests really aren't that bad, I would definitely recommend for orgo 1.
Professor Friedman is passionate about teaching chemistry. His classes are entertaining and he explains concepts very well, although he moves very fast so it is helpful to come to class having looked over the textbook first. Everyone complains that his tests are too hard but in the end there is a huge curve so it ends up fine. Don't be scared off!
He's tough, but fair. There's always a big curve for the exams but that doesn't mean you shouldn't work for the grade. Everything he covers in lecture is on the exam one way or another and he follows the textbook to a T. If you actually want the help, he will be there. He's great if you're going into Orgo2.
Dr. Friedman is a great lecturer and really wants you to do well. There are plenty of opportunities to do well in the class (GSS, online review sessions before exams, HW and participation clickers). The biggest knock against him is how hard he makes the class. Orgo is a beast as is but his tests are ridiculously hard at times. Curves well tho!
Very fast in class. If you don't go to GSS or office hours you'll have a hard time. Don't rely on the "old practice" exams. Your exam will most likely be nothing like it.
Works extremely fast during lecture. Concepts are hard to understand, but he gives you as many resources as he can to help you. Working through previous semester exams will help you get a feel for what kinds of problems you should expect to see in his future exams - it helped me A LOT. Use as many resources as you can!
I just took Dr. Friedman's CHEM231 class as a freshman (I tested out of CHEM131 with AP Chem). Going into this class I was quite scared, but Dr. Friedman was a fantastic and hilarious teacher who made the class easily manageable. Go to class, do the homework, do the practice exams, and study your reactions. That's what I did and I pulled an A.
Friedman is EXTREMELY attentive to his students and very organized. Replies to emails within the hour and goes out of his way to help students with any questions. Easy to talk to, great sense of humor, very prompt in uploading grades and notifications. He works VERY fast in lecture, so I HIGHLY suggest you read the chapters before going to class
Friedman works very fast. However, he provides so many resources that will help you better understand the concepts. It is very helpful to do old practice exams - try to understand the CONCEPT behind the practice exam problems, and you will most likely do fairly well on the exams b/c the concepts don't change. Understand rather than try to memorize.
After two semesters with Friedman I have learned his value. He's not going to cater to you, but he doesn't want you to suffer. He is accessible and helpful during his office hours, and rlly tries to get you to think about why something happens instead of memorizing. Useful for chem majors, useful for life. His sarcasm can be mistaken for rudeness.
This will be my fourth semester with Dr. Friedman. He is an excellent teacher and is always willing to spend time with you in office hours. He is known for being "tough," but his class taught me to think critically of reactions- an aspect critical to chemistry majors and pre-health degree majors. I encourage you to take him and challenge yourself.
If you are a slacker, you won't like Dr. Friedman. If you are serious about your academics, and really want to learn the material, then take Dr. Friedman. If you want to take a class where you can earn an easy A, perhaps take another professor. If you want to nail the MCAT or become a successful chemist, then take Dr. Freidman.
Dr. Friedman wants you to do well but, you have to work for it. He emphasizes doing a small amount practice problems daily. This is crucial when it comes to synthesis, NMR, IR, and mechanisms. He has videos on ELMS which are very helpful. He is very fast at grading and easily accessible out of class.
Lectures reeeally fast, so I suggest you not take him if you can't keep up with the pace, though he does have videos based exactly on what he lectures on Elms. You won't know what your grade actually is throughout the semester until after finals. His exams are really hard, seeing as the averages are between 40-50%
Friedman is the best Orgo 1 professor I could've had. He lectures quickly, but effectively. He is organized, explains anything you have questions on, & is incredibly knowledgable about orgo. He's also pretty sarcastic in a great way. DO YOUR HW, SHOW UP TO CLASS FOR CLICKER ?s. Put in time and you'll learn tons and have a great basis for Orgo 2.
He was the lab director. The post-lab questions aren't too bad and the TAs are very willing to help. He also posts the lab set-ups (and sometimes videos about the more difficult topics) online in advance which is super helpful. The tests are difficult though.
His lectures were very good at conveying the material, however his tests are needlessly hard, requiring the synthesis of multiple concepts on 3/4 of the problems even if it had not been addressed before in class. With orgo this is especial tough as you won't always knew what force takes precedence when combining concepts. Also mandatory attendance
If you want to learn organic chemistry, take it with Friedman. Like any Organic Chem class, this class was tough too. Simply said, you must put in the work to earn the grade you want. Friedman was very helpful at office hours and held reviews before each exam. He wants students to succeed! If you are looking for an easy A, not the class for you.
I've had all the basic chem teachers, you know who they are. Dr. Friedman is hands down the best. He lectures in a way that you understand and is extremely accessible outside of class. Instead of a tutor, I went to his office hours everyday. Tests are very hard but he will tell you what to expect. So helpful, great teacher.
Dr. Friedman is very good about explaining chemistry in a way that's easy to understand. He is pretty funny and very approachable. However, his tests are very difficult with averages in the 50s, but a generous curve. For the exams, you will need to know the concepts behind each topic and be able to connect more than one concept in each problem.
Learned a ton however, the tests are pretty tough. He is a good professor and great lecturer. Available outside of class and pretty helpful in office hours
OK, YES, his exams are hard, BUT all you have to do is get above the average and you're golden! I usually get in the 70's, tbh could have worked harder, but I should end up with a B+ at WORST with the curve. He is an AMAZING teacher! He moves slowly and explains everything in depth. I've never even opened the textbook.
Yeah, Dr. Friedman gives hard tests but he is a great professor and really makes sure you learn the material. He really just wants everyone to know chemistry and what the concepts are behind the topics so you will do well in much harder chem classes. If you actually want to learn and enjoy chem take Friedman hes the man!
Tough grader but really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you work hard you will pass. His curves are wonderful.
Dr. Friedman has a reputation of being a difficult professor. I'm not going to lie it was a difficult and a very lecture heavy course but the way Dr. Friedman taught was great. If you pay attention in lecture and take advantage of his practice exams you can do really well.
Grades are mostly based on exam scores. There's a lot of hw, 20 questions with multiple parts but each hw is 10 pts and there's 12 total. Lots of clickers. I got a low C on the 1st exam, low B on the 2nd, and flat 50 (yikes...) on the 3rd. The final is a different version of the same questions on the 3 exams. I got a D on the final (above avg)
Prof Friedman, is a great teacher, his lectures were helpful. But his exams were so unnecessarily hard and throughout the course youll doubt your intelligence because of the grades youre getting. But if youre willling to put in hours of work, take the class. And he curves the class in the end my average on test were a 46% but I ended with a 75%
Friedman's a really good teacher. He moves really fast during lectures, so if you doze off even for a minute you'll miss a lot. He's super helpful during office hours, but as everyone else said his exams are HARD. Study everything we did in class, but he'll throw a curveball at you just for fun. Only take him if you're willing to work really hard.
I honestly really enjoyed being in his class, but you have to work hard and come to lectures and discussions in order to do well. He is very fun and knowledgeable, however his exams are pretty hard. Even if you study everything he will still put something in there that you will most likely not have seen before, but the curve will save you!!!
Probably my best professor during the Undegrad years. Very good lecturer and honestly cares if students understand the concepts. Exams can be tough but if you pay attention in class and study consistently, you will do fine.
Organic chemistry is a hard class no matter which professor you take. However, Friedman is a very good professor who knows how to effectively teach the material. However, his exams are tricky and require a considerable amount of studying to master. Thankfully, he gives out old exams before midterms. With a some studying, you will pass his class!
The only grades in this class are exams, so good luck if you are not a good test-taker. I showed up to every lecture, took lots of notes, did practice problems, and studied a lot. I still struggled on a daily basis. Dr. Friedman takes pride in his extremely difficult exams and often brags that even he found them challenging. Don't take him.
Dr. Friedman is the best professor I've had throughout my time as an undergrad. This is the second semester I've taken him and he is by far the best orgo teacher at UMD. Is his class hard? Obviously, this is organic chem what do you expect, but he teaches it well enough where if you work hard you will do well. Would take him again if I could!
Dr. Friedman is the man! He teaches Organic chem in a way that makes it so easy to learn. He doesn't want you to memorize things just cause like other professors, he'd rather have you understand things fully so that you can be successful down the road on things like the MCAT. His tests are hard, but if you work hard and study you will be fine.
Friedman was huge in helping me understand orgo. He is super approachable and can help you understand any problem, he even puts in effort to learn most students names. He definitely is tough and pushes students, but it pays off in the long run as you will have a much deeper understanding and be better prepared for orgo 2. Just dont procrastinate!
His exams are pretty difficult but in general I think he's such a good teacher. He explains things very thoroughly and breaks everything down for you so you can genuinely understand. His lectures go by quickly and if you study for his exams and thoroughly know the material, you're going to do well.
Amazing teacher with great lectures. His exams are hard af tho, but he posts past exams that help out a lot. I do all of them before the exams and usually score around a B on them (without a curve). His class is harder than others, but you really understand the material. There's a curve at the end of the semester and its super generous.
I had to retake this class ( I took it first with a teacher who was actually considered easy). I didnt put in much effort and didnt pass by a hair. I was obviously scared to take it with Friedman, but he was amazing. Such interesting lectures, funny, yes you must WORK but youll be fine if you do just that. He really cares about his students.
Friedman is a great guy and a funny professor, but his class is ridiculously hard. His lectures are interesting but you learn most of the material doing the homework, and the tests are impossible even if you study a lot. He sort of roots for people to do poorly which makes it really hard. Save yourself the pain and just take a different professor.
Lab was unnecessarily difficult and exams were too tough for the material taught.
Friedman is what we like to call sadistic, he has no mercy for his students. His post lab questions are virtually harder than any homework you will ever do and its a one credit course. His exam averages are like a 30%. Just to top things off, he will literally send you to the honor's council in a heartbeat. Good Luck in orgo II lab, you ll need it.
Amazing professor with really great lectures and super helpful/accessible outside of class. He explains stuff really well. You'll definitely learn a lot if you go to lecture and keep up with the practice and homework. He also does late night live video reviews before tests. The only catch is that his tests are very hard, you gotta study past exams.
I failed the course with a D+ but it was all my fault. Dr. Friedman was a great professor and very knowledgeable. Lectures were not boring and he's funny! The only reason I did not pass is because I did not put in the work. I studied 2-3 days before exams and scored poorly on them. Study hard and go to lectures and you will do great! He's amazing
You might ask yourself: self, should I take Dr Friedman? Nope. He is a funny guy with lots of jokes and catch phrases (like the one above) but his exams are the hardest. Often not easy to understand what the questions are asking. Exam averages in low 50s but gets huge curve, 75ishA-. Key to success is studying the past exams and answer keys
Friedman is a super cool guy and is very willing to help. The only issue is the difficulty of the tests, but the curve will help you enough in the end.
Absolutely horrendous. This man wants to see people fail. There needs to be a new lab coordinator. Koppel for Orgo 1 Lab was hard but FAIR. Friedman most definitely makes this lab virtually impossible to do well in, even when you study. When I tell you he literally had answer choices from a-n on the final.... A THROUGH N?!?!? No words.
His class has a massive curve which is nice but it is desperately needed by the end of the semester due to how hard his exams are. Your TAs took the exam last night and averaged a 70 is what hed say. Very easy to talk to outside of class but he speaks as if you already know the material and can understand everything he says. Take somebody else.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He once said, "I forget that you're not all organic chemists, so Im not really sure how to teach it to you." On the last day of class he said, "we're going to debrief because taking a class with me is kind of like going through war."
Prof Friedman is an alright lecturer, although he can get sidetracked by an 'awesome' mechanism that we don't need to know. He tends to speak over our heads as if we already know the material (supposed to read textbooks before lecture). Exams are unneccessarily hard and he brags about their difficulty. Don't take unless you have a lot of free time.
really good at explaining the concepts and preparing you for orgo. the tests are hard with the averages being in the low 60s but he gives a generous curve
I know ppl have a lot to say abt Dr. Friedman but he is my all time favorite professor. I had him for 131 and 231, and he genuinely cares about students understanding. He provides a solid foundation to continue learning chem. his class is hard af but he gives you so many resources and makes videos. you have to put in the work but he genuinely cares
Labs were pretty decent. Post lab questions were relevant to the associated labs but often involved outside knowledge - go to TA office hours for help to improve your grade. Midterm was easier than final, but neither were terrible. Lab practical was stressful but reasonable. Overall, this lab isn't as bad as some of the others.
For Organic Chemistry II lab, it will be difficult but you will understand its value at the end. Decently curved.
Very hard, but doable, and definitely one of my favorite professors Ive had at UMD. His lectures are very dense (and he doesn't allow phones), but he's very accessible outside of class and will most likely remember your name. Definitely take him, its an experience.
He's rude. Not a good teacher and shouldn't be in charge of students. Doesn't care about you at all. Very sarcastic and not helpful. I can't wait to be done with his class.
Friedman is a really good professor that will help you succeed if you put in the work. Organic chem is a hard class, and the material can get confusing, but he does a good job at making it understandable, and doesn't emphasize memorization like some others. His exams can be challenging towards the end of the semester, but he's always open to talk.
Labs take the full three hours. Go to office hours. Exams are difficult and there's almost no use studying as Friedman is very clever and gives hard problems. Besides exams, I'd say this class is easier than 232 but in-class labs are rough - no partners so you have to know what you're doing and long lines to get reagents - takes forever. My 87 A
Heartless. When school shut down I was homeless, and got COVID19. I still did all of my work and had a near perfect grade. but I didn't have a way to submit one of my labs on time. I sent proof that my lab was finished on time and he ignored all my emails so I explained my situation to a higher-up. He ended up grading but still refused to email me
I was taking 242 w/Friedman and decided to drop the course. One of the most despicable professors at UMD. If possible, avoid. His lack of empathy for students situations is unreal. He offers no support, no guidance or no encouragement whatsoever. Truly a disgusting person. He makes PLQs ridiculously challenging on purpose for lessons. AVOID!!!!
Absolutely no consideration for students, on top of being rude. Just plain awful, PLQs are way harder than they need to be. Exam review was nothing like the actual exam. Midterm was on a Sunday and told a healthcare worker to take the exam on their lunch break. Didn't give enough time for students to take the midterm, many ended up skipping. AWFUL!
You ask for help and he just responds saying he can't give answers. How does he expect us to learn if he won't teach anything. Awful professor especially with the covid situation. Do not take him.
PLQs are way too hard and the exams are nothing like the practice exam he gives you. Then he gets angry and tells students that his exams are fair after everyone failed.
Was not responsive to students. Exams were unreasonably hard and had nothing to do with labs. Practice exams were far too easy compared to exams. If the lab is online again I do not recommend it. Even if you got good grades on the labs and worked on them for HOURS exams can destroy your grade.
Post-lab questions could be challenging, but averages for labs ended up being around 86%.The midterm and final were unnecessarily hard, and when the class averaged 42% on the midterm, Friedman's response was rude, and put the blame on us. They didn't really pertain to material we learned in class, and there wasn't enough time given.
I only have 350 words to say this and its not enough so I will get straight to it. - Impossible exams (class average was 30%) -Blames everyone for cheating on Chegg -Extremely high expectations -Rude -Email replies are "thanks for your opinion" -Unconcerned for students Do yourself a favor and avoid this professor at all costs.
Avoid this guy like the plague! It doesn't matter how good your labs are, his tests are unreasonably difficult. Usually 15 questions over 50 minutes. Test averages were horrible, about 35 to 50. He sets the class average at a B- (around 65 pre-curve), which is super low for the amount of work you'll put in. If possible, take another teacher.
The labs themselves are doable if you attend 1-2 office hours and collaborate with people (even my TA said to work with people). It's his exams that are the worst. Friedman has a rep for making the hardest exams and it's worst when all questions are MC. He also very very much despite cheaters and crack down on them hard.
This class destroyed me both physically and mentally.
I took Orgo I in Fall 2019. It was the worst experience ever. From the 1st exam I got an F and right before exam 2 was coming up, I simply withdrew from the class. I knew that I would not be able to succeed with this professor. The lectures at first seem straightforward, but the exams are like a whole different language. Just don't take him.
Lectures are kept interesting, great at answering questions. Tests are a bit hard, grades are curved at the end of the semester. Homework is fairly easy if you keep up with the material.
This class destroyed me. He is notorious for being one of the worst professors at UMD. His exams are impossible, usually all have an average of 30%. He refuses to acknowledge the difficulty and keeps saying this was very doable when literally the entire class fails. Ive never struggled so much in a class and walked out of every lecture confused.
He doesn't seem to care about students. He is straight-up mean. On the first day of classes, he came in and bragged his test averages were 47%. That's a failure by the teacher at that point.
My best advice is to go to GSS and do practice problems bc his tests arent that hard if you know the material. I didnt go to him for help at all bc he overcomplicates a lot of things but GO TO GSS !!!!!!!
He is known to be one of the "toughest" professors, but I say he is very good professor that wants nothing but the best for his students. He does dives DEEP DEEP into lecture that its easy to get lost sometimes. He wasn't as bad as people made him seem like. Organic chemistry is just generally difficult so be prepared.
Definitely one of the worst professors I've ever had to deal with. Usually, I don't like to give professors bad reviews but this class was too frustrating and was just unsympathetic towards me when I needed help.
He judges how good hes test are by seeing how many people cry. No joke, this man thrives by seeing students suffer. His Organic Chemistry lab midterm has General Chemistry on it and 75% of it was stuff we didnt learn. Almost all of the averages are 25%.
this man wants you to fail. he judges how good his tests are by how many students cry during it. u tell me whether a 25% average is normal. he consistently goes out of his way to come up with graduate level questions that no one can solve. worst teacher ive ever had.
friedman is the worst professor i have ever had. his tests are unreasonable, hes rude, and he thinks everyone is cheating and will attempt to accuse you with 0 evidence. TAs are generally trash. A lot of inconsistency in how they teach. No mercy on the exam grades (no partial credit). if you can take 242 with someone else then please save yourself.
Friedman is truly a fantastic professor, and I simply cannot wrap my head around the fact that people dislike him. Orgo is tough, and although he likes to challenge us, he also prepares us extremely well for that. Don't get me wrong: his tests are hard, but he always asks things that we are capable of answering based on what he taught.
Friedman truly does care for his students and wants you to do well. The tests have gotten significantly easier the last few years. If you do all the old exams on his elms you'll be prepared. Most people fail his exams but theres a huge curve so don't worry. Best advice is to read orgo as a 2nd language ahead of classes. I loved his lecturing style.
Can't teach very well, and uses charisma/jokes to make up for it. The TA would try to make up for the lack of things he taught us in class, where he would just barely mention a VERY important topic. His tests are extremely hard, and too little time is given to be able to complete them. He curves. He's pretty friendly. Uses clickers for attendance.
Unfortunately he's the only professor for lab classes so if you need to take the course for your major, good luck! Labs are ok and around the difficulty you would expect but it's the lab midterms and finals that are the grade killers.
Orgo 2 lab with Friedman is honestly not that bad. His lab reports are difficult but going to office hours and watching his lectures helped. The labs themselves are actually pretty fun. The worst part is definitely the midterm and final, they are extremely difficult and you will need to dedicate some serious time to studying beforehand.
Be realistic, it's a hard class, you're going to struggle. Also, if you're a professor in a course where half the students are Premeds, you're going to try to be abrasive to scare them off from constantly begging for an A. That being said, if you just go to him with a good attitude wanting to learn, he's super helpful and fair.
Professor Friedman was a great person overall. He was funny and it made his classes enjoyable. Organic Chemistry is a hard course, so no matter what, you are going to have to spend lots of time outside of class studying to succeed. His exam averages are usually very low, but he provides past exams to allow you to study which are super helpful.
I've taken him twice (CHEM131 and CHEM241) and I thought he was great. Of course the class material is difficult, but he made funny remarks that made it fun to learn. We would sometimes have little slightly off-topic discussions about general orgo stuff which was fun. Very helpful during office hours. As long as u respect him, he respects you.
He's a good professor. Very approachable and will help if you need and explain the concepts during office hours. He responds to emails very fast and detailed. Orgo is a hard course. His exams were fair, the final was really hard though for the amount of time given. If you understand the concepts you will be good.
This is my 2nd time taking Orgo and Dr. Friedman was definitely better than my last professor. He and the TA genuinely want you to learn and understand and they provide lots of opportunities for help. As long as you go to lecture, do homeworks, and study you'll do well.
lab prof and he will try to make everything difficult and toughly graded. hoping for a curve lol. even the TAs don't like him so best of luck
Dr. Friedman has a bad rep for no reason. All orgo classes are hard, idk why people expect an easy A. He has difficult exams, but he provides a LOT of resources to prepare and tells you exactly how to succeed in the course. He genuinely cares about students learning the content and helps a lot in office hours.
An infuriating man who has no business being as rude and anal as he is. At the end of the semester, he will never tell you what the curve will be, so if you're in-between grades, be prepared to sweat. After the final he said he needed time to come up with final grades because it was "part science, part art," like BFFR this is a 1 credit chem lab.
His sarcasm and jokes are what made lecture interesting. He has very hard assignments and his exam averages are well below the averages for other orgo professors, but there is a curve to account for it. While it is frustrating at times to have a course so hard, it is not that bad in the end. He was way more caring and responsive than expected
Okay. Dr. Friedman has a lot of personality. I think he genuinely cares and he is so smart and he loves Orgo so much. That is probably his biggest downfall though. He assumes that everyone has the same level of Orgo knowledge that he has. His tests are impossible. You need PhD level knowledge to understand them. Good person, bad at teaching.
Took CHEM 231 and 241 with Dr. Friedman- and as he put it- "everything you read online is true". Orgo is hard, and he doesn't make the class easy. He expects you to work hard, attend class, and struggle in everything. That said, if you do those things, Dr. Friedman is helpful, patient, accessible, and easily the best professor I've had.
Unless you know chemistry from previous classes, this class is not it. He explains chemistry in the most compicated way, his exams are nothing like the textbooks or his lectures. The average for every exam was always a 50-60.The only good thing was GSS and the textbook because they actually broke chemistry down to what it's suppose to be.
This professor expects you to come in with previous knowledge, if you have a lot of time in your schedule it is possible to do. Although if you can help it PLEASE do not take chem with him, any one else is better. His tests also do not reflect his teaching at all.
