Use the book and the CD. It really helps. He's nice and helpful sometimes. There's some questions on the tests that dont make sense. in our class, you either got a low grade or a high grade. there wasn't much of a middle. watch your grammar and spelling on the essays, they're worth like 50pts. and he counts -5 for every error
Hella nice teacher. He does grade for perfection on papers since his students ARE in a university. He tries to make class enjoyable, but if you want to be a dumbass&ask questions that he just answered, be prepared for some sarcasm.Be smart and attend class to benefit your knowledge&don't overlook questions.Chill class :]
Top Five in the league of major bores!
lee is one of the best professors i've ever had. i had no real interest in taking this class, and now i want to take more and more of his classes. he's funny, keeps class very enjoyable, and is an extremely easy grader on quizzes and papers. use proper grammar [as you should] or you'll get docked, but that's the only real downside. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
best professor ever!! study for tests because they can be difficult but there's only two and a final, everything else is pretty simple. highly recommended for everyone!! he's really funny and has great jokes too.
Absolutely AWSOME TEACHER!:) Always there for his students. Keeps class intertaining. Tests are straight forward. Make sure you dont make any grammar mistakes on papers, deducts 5 pts for each mistake. Overall GREAT teecher TAKE HIS CLASS!!:)
he is one of the best Professors on Campus
well to me this isn't an easy class. i ended up witha B-. the class was interesting. but his tests were hard. thats what got me. no extra credit. but he's funny to listen to. if you need to take philosophy you can take him if you want.
Take this class! I had no interest in philosophy but after, I loved it. Kerckhove is one of my favorite professors on campus. He takes boring, dry material and makes it interesting and worth the hour and a half class time.
All over the place kind of guy. Very confused as to what I had in the class, but ended up with a B-. His tests are rather difficult. If you plan on taking his class, you have got to read the text and know it very well.
AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! He's a teacher who really wants his students to pass and will always answer questions without making you feel dumb. He's has jokes and explains things easily. All the kids that didn't pass were dumb and fell asleep in class or didnt go. If you take him just listen and take notes and youll be fine.
Fun guy but sometimes very confusing
Cool Guy! He's quirky and extremely nice
Philosophy is a tough subject to learn. He does pretty good at differentiating between the different types of arguments and such. My first thought was Ughh this is going to be hard but not so much it's more like a challenge. Study well and youll do good. Ask and he will answer.
Great Person! Going into the year I was nervous for Philosophy, but now I'm so happy I got him as a professor! Relatively easy to understand at least for me.
Kerckhove is really energetic and passionate about what he teaches. It made me more interested in the subject matter. He was always willing to help whether it be in class, after class,or through email. I highly recommend taking a class of his.
LOVE HIM! He is so so easy anyone can get an A if they try just a little. Even people who don't show up to class and do the bare minimum get A's. He also will respond to emails and meet with you anytime! He is fantastic and definitely loves what he teaches. He also rarely uses power point!
He is amazing and very hot. Great teacher take his class! Yay! :)
Great class, funny, fun professor. He is really sweet and his lectures are clear and understandable. Right away he saves you money from buying the book, it is an online PDF that he and some other PHIL 110 professor wrote. But still barely use. There are quizzes, 2 writing assignments, 2-3 tests and a final. All based on lecture, super easy class.
Prof. Kerckhove is the chillest teacher ever! He makes the material fun and easy by making it relatable. He is very approachable and super helpful. He likes to joke around and expects participation. He has about 4 tests with some quizzes but they're not hard to study for. Don't fall behind bc it's hard to learn the material on your own. Good class!
He explained at the beginning of the semester that barely anyone got A's in the class or on tests. I got A's on every test and I expect to get an A in the class. If you take the time to read the text (which is online and free to the class) then you will do fine. He is very organized and clear and I'm glad I had him!
The class was very interesting, and he was a lot of help. At the end of the semester he takes the 5 highest quiz grades, and the final is optional. It does involve a little studying, but an easy A class.
By far my favorite teacher and class my first semester of college! Not to mention if you do decent on your tests and quizzes, the final is optional.
I highly recommend this professor! He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and is an easy grader. He pretty much follows the syllabus but will push back a test if he feels that his students aren't ready. No textbook required, he provides one online. And reviews before each quiz if you ask questions. Very easy class, wants his students to pass
He was so sweet and he went out of his way to help you. If you had a question before the test he would make sure you understood it. He sent out emails to the whole class if he would even be 5 minutes late to his office hours. He makes kind of lame dad-jokes but they're funny. He wrote the textbook and posts it online so you don't have to buy it.
He's a very funny guy. A few of the lectures will be long and tedious, but nothing too bad. If you actually take good notes and study them, you will do well. The final was optional but it is a good idea to take it cause there's a possibility to do really well and it will replace your worst or missing exam score. I would take the class again!
Material appears intimidating, but tests and quizzes were surprisingly easy.
One of the best professors at CSUSM! Makes the material interesting, funny guy. He's there for you if you need help and doesn't let you leave confused. Class consists of 3 papers, 3 tests and 6 quizzes. Final is optional and drops the lowest quiz out of the 6 at the end.
really easy but you need to read a little bit.
simply amazing teacher and man.
Lee kerckhove is definitely one of my favorite professor. I really enjoyed his lectures, and he has a great sense of humor sometimes. I definitely recommend to take this class. You'd enjoy it.
Great class. 2 5 page papers, 3 tests, and an optional final that can be used to improve a test grade. Dr. Kerckhove is a really nice guy with a great sense of humor, and his lectures are very clear and interesting
He is funny and really dedicated to philosophy. He is an easy grader we only did 3 article reviews, just wrote 1 page summaries and gave you full credit if you did it, 4 quizzes? but they were all easy. 2 3-5 pages but super easy and straight forward. He doesn't require you to buy a book b/c it is online and so are his powerpoint.
I personally think some of his lectures might be very boring but try to listen because it could help a lot especially on the definitions. He's funny and very patient, so feel free to repeat your questions over and over until you're clear. I feel lucky to be one of his students after all.
One of the best professors so far! He doesn't give out many tests and they're pretty easy as well as the quizzes. You also don't need to buy a book because he put it up on cougar courses which is really nice. You won't really need it unless you want to study which I would highly recommend because his lectures have a lot of information all the time.
His lectures are long and after a quiz they will continue, however he is a very dedicated and funny professor. Would definitely take this class again
Great professor. His class was very simple yet a LITTLE challenging. Don't miss any classes there is always important info. take good notes & study them a little every day and you WILL pass. Ask questions he is there to help. writing assignment were super EASY!!. didn't really use the book (he wrote the book so don't need to buy it).
Funny teacher and lectures are a bit long but not boring. He co-wrote the book so you don't need to buy it and barley use it. If you take good notes, and show up to class you are bound to pass. would take again due to him making philosophy interesting and he makes great puns.
Awesome professor, makes the class super enjoyable and always has funny puns. Always comes in positive and with a lot of energy! He makes sure students understand everything! Quizzes can be tricky at times but if you ask questions he will spend all the time needed before the quiz to answer them. no midterm/ 2 easy papers! One of the best professors
He is super funny and makes going to class an easy thing to do. Helps you actually learn the material and Everyone in the class was always very engaged because hes just such a great professor.
Great teacher, not a bad thing to be said about him.
Great class to take for my first semester in college! Class attendance isnt mandatory, but i recommend going because the lectures are very helpful in understanding the material. Dont have to buy the book, he gives it to you online. Reading isnt mandatory but i recommend doing the exercises to review for quizzes and tests. Very interesting class!
Very smart professor. Kind, understanding, fair, and hilarious. You don't need to buy the textbook since he is the author and gives you access online. Tests and quizzes are straightforward. If you fail a test/quiz, it's because you didn't study, not because it was difficult. Lecture heavy, but interesting.
He is the best professor I have had in college so far. He makes everything so easy to understand and is always willing to help you out. He's an easy grader on papers and the quizzes are easy if you keep up with the work. Would definitely recommend him and his class!
What an amazing guy! He's extremely sweet and willing to help you in any way during his office hours, and even after class. He drops the lowest quiz grade, which helps, but is no excuse to slack. In my opinion, the first test will make or break you. Get an A on it, you're golden. Get a B, time to work. Get a C, you will struggle if you want an A-.
Favorite professor of my whole 1st semester. He's funny but still gives you everything you need to pass and do well in his class. Free textbook but I didn't use it, everything is in the lecture. Take notes or you'll struggle. You gotta kill the quizzes theres a lot. Highly recommend him to anybody taking Phil.
Awesome professor!!! He wrote the book so you don't need to buy it, super funny and always comes ready to teach in a good mood! Take good notes on lectures and study for quizzes there is one every other week. 3 tests - self explanatory. if you study from the quizzes tests will be easy for you! two short papers really easy 50 points and theyre fun!
He is my favorite professor for Philosophy. The quizzes are really easy if you study for it. The two papers were really easy for the semester. There is three test which is two 100 point Test and a Final. The First Test either make it or break it for your grade in the class. Go to his office hours for help on the lectures.
He is a good professor. Phil could get a bit confusing, but if you study you will for sure pass the class. Not an easy A, but if you study you will most likely pass it.
He is one of my favorite professors at Cal State San Marcos. He teaches really well during the lectures. He is willing to look over your paper before the due date. He gives good feedback. His quizzes are not that hard. Study for his Test and Final or else you won't get a good grade in his class. He is an amazing professor so be in his class.
Dr. Kerckhove is a great professor, and he has a good sense of humor! He is very willing to help students that reach out to him. I definitely recommend taking notes and studying for quizzes and tests. No midterm. Two papers (approx. 3-5 pages each). There is one group project at the end of the semester. The final is cumulative.
Very good professor, actually teaches. Tells you what you need to know for tests and quizzes. Attendance not mandatory but I wouldn't recommend skipping. Easy grader. You need to study for tests and quizzes but as long as you have the notes or read the power points online you're set.
I learned a lot in this class and when I skipped a class I missed lot of material but other then that I did fine. A lot of vocabulary and could get difficult if you dont study for quizzes or test. Hes awesome
He dope but pay good attention in lecture and you do good
This is that one teacher who writes his own book and makes the class read it L.O.L. The quizzes are ok but you definitely need to study for them. If you get an average of F's on the quizzes you WILL NOT pass. He also doesn't seem to care about the students. I didn't enjoy him at all.
He's a great professor and helps make critical thinking fun. Recommend doing the notes online before he goes over them in class if you want to get a full understanding of the material. The quizzes and tests are kind of difficult. The final group project is fun. Attendance is not mandatory, but his lectures are entertaining.
Great professor!
This is one of the best classes to take at CSUSM! He is funny and makes a subject like critical thinking fun
Prof. K is the best Philosophy teacher! I was very hesitant about this class, but I am glad I selected his. He has his own textbook, so you don't have to buy one. Teaches it very well, and does give feedback after every quiz and test. There is only 2 essays, but they are very easy. Show up to the lectures to understand the material.
One of the few great professors at CSUSM. He makes critical thinking enjoyable and interesting. If you read outside of your class then you will do well. Is very funny and cares about students and their success. I would 100% recommend that you take him. Loved his class, no surprises on his tests or quizzes. 2 papers are assigned and they are easy.
Professor Kerckhove is an amazing professor. I have taken his hybrid philosophy class where you listen to the lectures online then go over them in class. I highly recommend taking his class, it is easy to learn and he is always up for listening to your opinions and questions and he answers them well in a way anyone can understand.
I took his hybrid class, meaning the lecture portion of the class was online and in the in-person class he'd answer questions and review the topics before a weekly quiz. He really simplifies things and doesn't try to trick you on tests. If you at least a little pay attention to the lectures it should be an easy A or at least a pass.
Kerkhove really is a great philosophy professor. He is very passionate about the topic and wants you to do well. He assigns homework but he goes over it in detail the next class, and it isn't graded. He answers questions very clearly and can make learning fun. If you have to take philosophy, I wouldn't go to any other professor!
Professor Lee was so amazing. He is so passionate about the subject, and wants to help any student that is having trouble understanding. I took his hybrid class, and would definitely recommend it. If you don't understand certain material he has no problem going more in depth.
Dr. Kerckhove was an awesome professor. There's a textbook but it's accessible through the course page, easy to navigate through. There's a lecture posted on the course page and then he also goes over the lecture in class and does various examples. There were quizzes on the material each week and a group project at the end. Emails back quickly too!
I genuinely really enjoyed this class. I took the hybrid course so PowerPoints were uploaded online with content to learn. Then you can ask questions in class. Professor kerckhove is very receptive to student questions and is great at making the content easy to learn.
The best PHIL 110 professor at Cal State!! He explains the topics extremely well and wants his students to ask questions and feel comfortable with what is being taught. He wrote his own textbook and posts it online so no need to buy anything. 2 tests, 6 quizzes (he drops your lowest one at end of the semester), 1 paper, final group project. Easy A!
Best professor EVER! I took his hybrid philosophy class and I was a little skeptical with the lectures being online but he is so enjoyable to listen to. He also understands life happens and is flexible with working with you. There are 6 quizzes, a midterm, final, and a short paper. If you listen to the lectures & go to class you will get an easy A.
This professor is amazing! I took his hybrid class where we listen to the lectures at home, then go into class once a week. The only things you are graded on are quizzes, a midterm, a short paper, and the final. As long as you pay attention in class, you will easily get an A. All of his quizzes and exams are straightforward.
Easy course as long as you pay attention to lectures.
Super easy class just show up to take quizzes and tests. For quizzes, he goes over the relevant material prior to, and during the day of the quiz, which is super helpful. He has online lectures, but I never watch them and still doing great in the class with just the notes. He's super chill, and cracks jokes throughout class.
My first year at CSUSM couldn't have better! This is a hybrid class, meets once a week! This class was my favorite, especially because the professor was so passionate about philosophy, he was very enthusiastic when teaching the lecture. This made the class a lot more interesting and made me want to learn! DEFINITELY recommend taking this course.
My first semester at CSUSM and he was great! It's a hybrid class, so it meets once a week! This class was neat because he was so passionate about philosophy, very enthusiastic and pretty funny. This made the class a lot more interesting and go by very fast! 13/10 recommend taking this course. Easy A. Test/Quizzes are very easy & straightforward!
Dr. K was awesome and I loved his class. If you read the textbook he wrote and provides on Cougar Courses, the info is pretty straightforward. His lectures make everything easy to understand and hes funny, too. Theres quizzes almost every week and you can make up 1 quiz. He is very accessible through email or office hours
Professor Kerckhove was amazing! He is a wonderful professor. You can tell that he actually cares about what he is teaching and the students doing the class work. This was a hybrid class. The lectures he posted were sometimes long but very thorough. He was awesome and allowed one page of notes front to back for the midterm and the final.
Professor Kerchhove made this class so easy to pass, the way he explains the material in class is amazing, the lectures are interesting too and easy. The quizzes are pretty straightforward to what he teaches in class and lecture. He would let you use a page of notes (front and back) for the midterm and final, so make sure you take advantage of that
I loved him!! His class was super straightforward and simple as long as you kept up with your work. It is a hybrid class and its so worth it! Watch lectures on your own time and go to class for a discussion. He is also a very sweet guy always willing to help. Take him!!
He is very passionate about what he teaches and you can tell by his lectures. He is amazing and very helpful.
I took his hybrid class. It basically consisted of 1 short paper, 6 quizzes (multiple choice), 2 exams (mid/final) also multiple choice but each included 1 small essay. He mostly goes over exercises during class. His lectures are online and he provided us with the textbook! Unfortunately there's no extra credit, but the class was easy to manage.
The textbook is free he posts it on cc. Super kind prof, teaches Phil very good. I took him online and we only met once a week. I would take notes on the chapters and did the hw assignments. His class is very easy to follow along and understand. Definitely recommend him.
This class was super interesting! He was very clear on everything and we had 2 weeks to complete each assignment.
He was a very good professor! We had 2 weeks to finish everything! Its pretty clear what he wants, you wont regret taking him!
Easiest A I promise. All the work is watching his lectures and posting in a forum. Gives you two weeks for every assignment. Professor seemed really nice! Take him!!!
I have taken this class twice and failed twice, and was not excited to take it again. However after taking this course with Professor Lee Kerckhove I learned many things that I had not learned before. Professor Kerckhove was super kind and respectful when I reached out for help. I recommend this professor to anyone who needs to take this class
Amazing lectures. Learned a lot in this class. I would have enjoyed this class in person! Very clear in syllabus of what is expected. You get 2 weeks to do a specific module. These usually consist of a few lectures, readings, a quiz and a short discussion post. Quizzes/Exams are not hard. Very helpful and offers office hours. One of my easy classes
Professor Kerckhove is a very good lecturer! He is very concise and clear, and I personally thought the lectures were pretty interesting because he uses many real-life examples when he demonstrates certain topics. I also liked the structure of the class and thought it was very manageable.
Havent had any problems - class is online with online lectures and info but I really like how his modules are 2 weeks long so you have plenty of time to get anything done. Tests and quizzes are two chances and you get graded on highest score
This class was fun. He provides the textbook that he wrote himself. The course consists of discussion posts every two weeks and a midterm and a final.
Professor Kerckhove was a great professor! He would post lecture videos for each module/lesson we did. His lectures were clear and detailed. Overall, I really enjoy the way his class was structured. For each module, there would be readings, a discussion board, and a quiz. Other than that, there were only two exams and one short paper.
The best treat about this course is that its modules are ~two weeks and you have three weeks to complete the final. Moreover, the concepts are explained well and I found myself subconsciously applying them as well! One short paper as a mid and then a test for the second half of the final; smooth sailing, enjoyable, and digestible pace.
Professor Kerckhove is a good professor. I just wished I asked for help and didn't blow off the class. For one thing, when it comes to this class you have to keep up with taking notes in this class, reading the material, watching the lectures, doing the discussion boards, and make sure to do the midterm paper otherwise you'll fail the class.
Easiest professor and class ever !!!! Very lenient but do not take advantage of him !!!! Easy A in this class with him .
Professor Kerckhove was very chill. Always willing to help. Office hours are a great resource. You'll do well in class if you attend class and complete the weekly homework assignments.
TAKE Dr.K!!! He is by far the best professor, with amazing lectures & the environment in the class is superior! He has up to 6 quizzes (all easy, everything is based of his class lectures), mid-term and final were fairly easy, & he only has one short paper. He is funny, and really cares about his students. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
This professor was amazing. Super prepared and easy-going. He's also extremely easy to talk to. He cracks jokes during class, and he isn't tough on you at all. I really appreciated having such a caring professor, especially being an overwhelmed student. I definitely recommend this teacher!
Super easy class, and a very chill professor. Class is graded off of quizzes, a midterm, one paper, and a final. No homework and all quizzes and tests are open note. Very easy to pass this class with an A.
100% recommend. Lectures can feel very long and somewhat boring because he really repeats himself a lot. Attend class and take good notes because he allowed complete open notes on exams and quizzes, even the final!! One paper and two exams, a midterm and final. Had some extra credit, overall, so kind and understanding. TAKE HIM!
Very too the book on how/when quizzes, tests, and lectures will happen. All of the work is very easy and goes over material before quizzes. Super nice professor and understanding to situations. Able to use notes on midterm/final. Very passionate about his lectures and making sure students understand the material. Definitely recommend.
I LOVED Professor Kerckhove. The class is easy if you complete assignments on time and study a little before each of the quizzes. He makes assignments very clear and posts everything on Canvas. A lot of the material you learn is "no duh" stuff and is fairly easy. He also offers extra credit. This professor is caring, funny, and a very sweet guy.
Amazing Professor, super easy and straightforward. the class was hybrid, so if you read the lecture and attended class, you passed the quiz. easy material and no homework
I loved Professor Kerckhove's class. Even though attendance was not mandatory, I went every day. He is a very funny and entertaining teacher, and he is very easy to understand. His lectures are usually posted on Canvas, as well as explained in class; he answers emails quickly; and is always available during office hours. DEFINITELY TAKE HIS CLASS.
TAKE HIS CLASS FOR PHIL110. His class was easy to complete, and his lectures, while long, he made them very easy to understand. I took it as a hybrid course; so lectures were posted before class to review. Quizzes ranged from being easy, to difficult, but he gave so much review material before the quiz/test. Would recommend this professor!
Take his class. I took his hybrid class and all the concepts are so easy to remember thanks to his rememberable examples. Even though the practices aren't mandatory, DO THEM. It'll help you grasp these concepts further. His way of teaching kept me engaged!
This professor is amazing. Such an interesting course, the professor made great examples and can really understand his audience. He also really wants his students to succeed so he really tries his best to make sure you have everything you need before you take a quiz or exam. Genuinely, if you have the opportunity to take this professor, you should.
Professor Kerchove is a great professor he cares about his students and helping understand the topics discussed in class. Some of the topics are difficult but he explains and makes it easier to understand. Most of the course is just quizzes and two exams but he gives papers and allows cheat sheets to make them easier.
Professor Kerckhove is great and definitely a great pick if you want to take philosophy. The topics are relatively simple to grasp, and he explains each unit in detail. The course consists of two exams; one midterm and one final exam. You also take quizzes each week about the week's lectures. You also can use notes/cheat sheets! :) Great professor.
Professor Kerckhove is truly so amazing!! He really cares about his students and wants to see you succeed. His class consists of 2 exams (1 midterm, 1 final), 1 paper, and a quiz each week. Notes/Cheat Sheets are allowed on all exams and quizzes. Some concepts are tricky but he is willing to clarify anything and answer questions. TAKE HIM!!
Awesome person overall. One of those professors that you can tell loves to teach and cares about his students. Makes the material very easy to understand, grades quickly and very respectable interactions all around. Would highly recommend any class of his.
Hands down, favorite professor of the semester~ 1 midterm, 1 final (non-cumulative), 6 quizzes. All assessments are open-note and he even gives a hefty extra credit opportunity. Amazing lectures that are never boring & he is easily accessible through email. Would take him again anytime!
understanding, if you need to adjust an assignment just talk to him and he will do his best to accommodate you. Made his own textbook for students so we didn't have to buy one. Workload is easy and there are open note quizzes, exams are not cumulative of all course material (just tested on first half of course and second half)
overall a very chill professor
he cares about his students and their success in this course. there are multiple quizzes throughout the semester however they are open notes. for exams, you are allowed to have a one-pager. there is only 1 essay and it's 5 pages. definitely take his class.
Loved taking Dr. Kerchove's class. No pointless assignments. Only quizzes, one short paper, a midterm, and a final. Able to make up quizzes and if you watch the lectures and attend, quizzes and exams are super clear and easy. Super kind and understanding professor. I recommend :)
Professor Kerckhove makes PHIL110 a breeze - his lectures are clear, and the quizzes and exams are manageable with the provided study tools. Using resources like unstuck AI alongside the lecture materials really helped me stay on top of the course. Definitely a professor I'd recommend taking.
Great professor. His class was so easy to understand and he was supportive and helpful for students. Always available. He wants everyone to get an A. Just take notes and watch his course materials to easily pass the class. Please take his class, he's a wonderful professor.
LOVED Prof. Kerckhove, he was the sweetest ever and the class was a breeze literally just do the hw which wasn't a lot and study for the quizzes and you'll be fine. The quizzes are super easy and based on the chapters we learned for the week. Exams were also a breeze , and you can use a cheat sheet for all of them. He is so down to earth!!
He's so sweet and has such a kind demeanor about him. The class made me want to look deeper into philosophy and other subjects similar. Class is straightforward I took the hybrid course and if you watch his lectures on canvas in addition to attending class and do the practice questions you'll do amazing.
Professor Lee shows that he cares about students, and he is a nice guy. The lectures may get a little boring sometimes, but if you keep up with the material (which honestly isn't too hard), then the lectures make sense and go by faster. The material might look like a lot, but the quizzes, midterm, and final are not bad at all.
Professor Kerckhove was one of my favorite teachers so far at this school. This class was hybrid and we only had it once a week and the rest was online. He made the lectures engaging and fun to listen to. I would 100% take him again just for the experience. He is very accessible outside of class and grades the material super fast. No complaints.
Dr. Kerckhove is awesome! His lectures are easy to follow, quizzes and exams are open note. Attendance was not mandatory, but I recommend attending lectures because he provides great examples and info to help you pass the course. His criteria is clearly outlined and he is easy to communicate with. Don't hesitate to choose him as your professor!
Super easy grader. His quizzes and even the final is 1 page of notes. There's one paper that needed to be at least 5 pages long. He post slides that you can write your page of notes on and some videos even.
