awesome teacher!! Easy to get an "A" too.
This course is very challenging, but it is definitely worth the time and effort to do the work wholeheartedly--You will learn so much about research in the field of psychology.

Have her double check your work, as per she told me to do something on my final 12 page report, which made 2 pages incorrect, and I ended up with a "D" when I had a B before just because of that...
She makes class fun.
She is a nice person but her assignments are unclear and she's very unorganized. She doesn't make clear what she wants you to do on assignments and doesn't lecture much but expects you to know everything for the test.
She constantly talks about her children. Espically her daughter dating a hocky player in the olympics. OH and did I mention her sons an avid soccer player....yeah yeah we heard it all
This teacher is a little wrapped up in herself and is not very clear until the very lasy moment of what she wants done. Her lectures can be interesting, but she needs to focus more on teaching. He teaching assistants as just as confused.

She never really talked. We had a lot of guest speakers. She didn't teach us anything. I'm at UC Davis now and I'm taking Abnormal Psych and I learned nothing from that class even though I got an "A" it was jacked don't waste your time, unless your really bored, because it was somewhat entertaining.
She's a charltan, and dosen't teach well. She seems nice, but I don't believe it.
this teacher is horrible!! She has her teaching aids do everything. She never returns phone calls or emails. She is very unclear and only talks about her self! Very conceited. She should not be teaching at all!!
She is a very good teacher. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable environment.
I had her and i had High B in her class and we had to do a project at the end of the semester and she didnt gave us any information on it and she gave me a D and my grad fail to C and that suck. Alot of people told her that they lost their grade for it and she should go over it but she didnt help.

She was a great teacher, I was gonna get an A for sure, then I TOTALLY bombed her T.O. I guess it was my fault, i shouldve asked for help. I just didnt think it would graded as hard as it was. Advice for future students: GET HELP ON THAT T.O.!!! Went from an easy A to a C. (ended with a B)
She is an amazing teacher. The best I have had. I was intrested in psych before but because of her I know this is what I want to do. TAKE HER CLASS!!
Really good teacher, very approachable. Has a good personality,and will be your friend. Dont think her class will be easy, but its not hard either, put in some effort and youll be happy with your grade.
Lee was the best teacher I have ever had. She demonstrates a love and passion for psychology and makes class fun and interesting everyday. She is enthusiastic and has a very friendly and laid back personality. She is willing to take input and will always give extra instruction when needed. She is just an amazing person.

this is the greatest psyche teacher i've seen at mjc, she has a more philosophical stance on psychology than any of the others that i have seen she is interesting, insightful, and truly loves her job. which makes it all easier to swallow
Easiest A I ever got...I think it was just the class though...personal psychology it's all about yourself so there are no wrong answers...no possible way one could get any lower than an A. Lee's way engeritic...scary sometimes.
Had taken this class because a lot of people recommended Lee. Was horrified to find that she is terrible at teaching. You can tell who the favorites are her past students from 101. She seems easy to approach but really is not at all. At times I thought she was okay but she did not teach at all. She relies heavily on guest speakers. DO NOT TAKE HER!
She is a fun teacher to get, but her tests are really hard. She has a lot of Psych assisants but there schedules are hard to fit with yours. I guess is an alright class, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
Took her twice she was so great. She prefers to be called Lee, which shows how personable she is. Her tests are simply the material covered in lecture, she rarely uses stuff from the text. She shows videos to prove her points and has a lot of fun with the demonstrations.

Doesn't teach what is relevant to her tests. Remember to read your text before taking her tests, because almost NONE of her lecture material is going to be on the tests. Neat lady, but just stay on your toes with her. She's like the big bad wolf in granny's clothes.
You really have to pay attention, but she makes it easy because she's so entertaining. She has many assistants to make sure you understand the assignments and course requirements. Her tests are difficult, but you just have to read the text. I would recommend her to anyone.
merchant's psych 101 is not good. she makes you do 4 debates and 1 of those you have to be a speaker. the debates have nothing to do with psychology. she also makes you take 10 quizzes with 5 questions each. 4 tests with essay questions. she is very unclear about the things she do. her lectures don't help. take her if you wish to do tons of work.
All I remember from this class is the other students giving presentations on various mental disorders, and me getting 100% on my presentation and my research paper and doing well on all the assignments and tests and still managing a B in the class. Oh well.
oh my gosh! she is such a nice professor & her class was very interesting! her lectures were good & everything we had to do was fairly easy. you just have to be sure to do the work! very interesting class & great teacher!! A+++
Wonderful teacher who really wants you to learn. Don't be put off by the debates - they ARE related to mental health issues, although initially she doesn't really make that clear. Her lectures are lively and interesting. Read the book, take notes, ask questions, do the work, show up, and you'll do fine.
This Proffesor Merchant really likes to see students to make it in her class, she really seems to enjoy what she does.
She was very nice and informative. I really enjoyed her lectures, she found ways to make the class fun. If you do the debate work and study for the tests you will get an A. I didn´t find her TA's to be very helpful though, don't bother going to the study sessions.
Loved her class. She really made everything interesting. She related the course material to her own patients, and made us all laugh in the process. As long as you keep up with the reading and do the debates, you will do well in this class.
LOVED THIS CLASS!!! She is so entertaining! I learned so much in this class...I won't go to easy you deff got to STUDY and read but it is so worth it!
I loved lee! If you have taken psych 101 this class is a breeze! Do the work and you'll get an A for sure. Just make sure you print out the study guide and know EVERYTHING thats on it. She asks 2 or 3 questions about each of them on the tests! Great Class!
Don't take class with Lee if you want to learn. She doesn't teach in class but you have to come for the "psychological" debates (not relevant to the material whatsoever), reading quizzes and test dates. If you want to pass the class you will be learning on your own by reading the book. Tolerates immature behavior and kids using phones constantly.
she was an alright teacher. nothing special. talked entirely too much about herself. i didnt learn much. what upset me most is she wrote the book that was required to pass the class. it was expensive and useless.
OK teacher but here TA's try to teach the class for her! ANNOYING! they think they know everything. Good teacher plays interesting videos. Make sure you dont wait until the last minute to do your debates.
I had her a while ago...and I loved her psych 101 class!!! Psychology is soooo interesting and she is very helpful. After recieving an A in her class I moved on to being a TA! What a great experience!
I took her Psych 101 class in Fall of 06 and she was my favorite professor. She is very clear and helpful in her teaching style. You have to get up in front of the class and debate on certain issues from the text, but it is really easy and fun, take it from someone who hates public speaking. I got an A+ in the class. Taker her!
i love this teacher....i took psych with ganes and failed it...then i took it with merchant...and passed it!! she makes psychology<which i hate> fun...easy class...do the reading and the debate and youll be okay.
I like her as a person, but would NEVER take her class again. Most of the time she would lecture on a topic that was not relevant to what chapter we were on. She didn’t fully explain the exams either. I passed the class with an A but was completely lost most of the time. Her TAs are not helpful at all!!!!
Merchant was a great teacher i really liked her. I thought she was going to be hard but i thought she was easy. she loves to teach, so it makes the class fun! Just do the debates and study for the exams and you'll do fine in her class.
I passed this class with an A, but I didnt really learn anything. Lee is very unclear about the material. She would lecture on topics that didnt relate to the read assignments. I felt completely lost. As long as you read and complete the debates you will be fine. As for the TAs, they are a waste of time, dont bother going to them for help.
I dnt want 2 sound repetitive, but do the reading and the debates! They R so easy and she makes class fun!! She shows you all kinds of vid clips on youtube and makes learning fun. You don't use text much in class, but you do for studyn. When I ditched other classes this was the only one I would attend!! Great teacher, with great lectures!!!!

lee is awesome! her lectures are fun and entertaining! Just do your debates and study for the tests and you will get an A. The only bad things about this class is the TA's they are useless, don't go to there study sessions!
This teacher is aweful, she doe not belong at Modesto Junior College, she failed over one hundred students for 1 class, word is getting around about this teacher, who spends all her time talking about her boyfriend, and her kids, when talking with other students on campus it is clear that the school needs to deal with the person, full of herself!
My experience with this teacher was very disappointing. She never lectured on any of the material. Almost all of the classes were student presentations and guest speakers. All of the test material was from the book. We had no lectures on any of the material. If you take this class be sure to do the speaker responses.
I am currently attending this class. I had high hopes for psychology, but this class has not been what I had hoped for. We did not even have a lecture on the material for the first month of class. So far this has been more of a "self-help 101" class than a psychology class. She is flat out confusing and not remotely a good teacher. Do not take!
I'm currently in lee's class I too didn't understand at first but once I sat down and found out what she wanted from me I have truly enjoyed the class good clear lectures and easy to follow. you get what you want out of this class. study the book and do the required paperwork and you will get an A.she is fun,easy to talk to, and easy on the eyes
I'm in her abnormal psych class and while it is interesting, she is a terrible teacher. She never teaches, it's all guest speakers and student responses. She doesn't prepare you at all for the tests, and just talks about herself. She is very annoying and not helpful in the least. You will regret taking her. I do. Save yourself the aggrevation!!
She is an excellent teacher. At first I thought she would be hard but...just do debates go to all classes and you wont really need book...study your notes and you will do fine on test!!! she keeps me motivated to go to school and really cares about her students!!!!
I really liked Lee. She's entertaining and her lectures are usually interesting. Unfortunately, they're also completely useless. The semester is almost over, and I haven't used the text or my lecture notes once. Attending class is mandatory for things like debates and clicker questions, but aside from that, there isn't much else. Easy and boring.
Lee Merchant is in essence not a good teacher. I learned little to nothing about psychology in her psychology 101 class. She wasn't very clear about assignments we were supposed to do and didn't hold my interest in her lectures. I only remember learning psychology on two or three days of the semester.
Lee really is very nice. However, as a teacher, she is all over the place. When lecturing, she goes off tagents about her prior experience; its intresting, but pointless to the lecture. Her TA's are also not helpful. The test questions she gives are tricky. Overall, you feel like the class is a waste of time.
This woman is a terrible teacher. Just finished her class and quite honestly, she doesn't teach a bit. The class is students giving Power Point Presentations and her nodding in the back of the room and saying "Interesting." She comes off very phony and at times is rude when questions are asked about homework. Her deal: condescension.
She is sweet and very funny. The class is pretty easy and you learn a lot if you pay attention,and don't talk the whole time.Lee was a little unorganized. The syllabus had the previous semester's info. If you go by what she tells you, you'll be fine. Beware tho our WHOLE class had to re-take the essay exam because she was unclear on what she wanted
I absolutely love Lee. Her class is not for slackers, and she's extremely particular when it comes to your work so pay attention to details. But she's passionate about her profession and she makes class a lot of fun. If you do your work you'll most likely earn than A you want.
Overated teacher! She seemed like she was a nice person, but she was hella weird. She didnt make her assignments clear. She got mad when we did our debates wrong, but she didnt tell us how to do them. She wouldnt grade our mid-terms unless they were to her liking. Our final was taken after a lecture. Only reason I liked her was because I got an A.
Talked about sex all the time. The class itself is interesting but she isn't. She wasn't clear on assignments and it felt really pointless. you buy the big book and we didn't even read it i used it once.
This Is a great class and Lee is a good teacher. She really loves it. She isnt much help and it seems like most of the learning that we do is from eachother on our presentations. she is hard to get a hold of. but overall if you just do the work its an easy A... really good class set up.... DONT PROCRASTINATE!
Wow I read some other entrys and it sounds like a bunch of people who don't want to work at all. Lee is amazing her personal adjustment class will change your life! She's a wealth of helpful strategies that can help you get the best out of your life. I think she is such an awesome lady!Work hard, don't procrastinate and listen!
I really enjoyed Ms. Merchant?s class, it was entertaining and informative. I have learnt a lot about communication skills. I have to be honest that the work load was heavy, but if you keep up with them from the beginning, you will be fine! She is very nice, helpful and understanding.

I LOVE psych. I have taken every other psych class at MJC. I can say without a shadow of a doubt, SHE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST teacher EVER. her assignments were unclear, she hands you a huge packet thats unclear. I dont think she wants to do any work in class when i pay for a class i want to actually be taught. DO NOT TAKE. take gains MUCH better

This is the best teacher at mjc for Psychology. I had a few bumps but she is giving me a second chance. This is a debate class,do your debate prep work,one essay exam on a topic you will prepare in advance,one multiple quest final exam,and present on one debate. This is a very easy class.Follow and pay close attention to syllab, get a A.

If you're generally interested in learning mental disorders, or learning PERIOD, don't take this class. everything is really uncertain and very disorganized- she doesn't even grade half of the papers. her exams follow NO guidelines, this class is just a HUGE WASTE OF TIME. the only reason why she isn't fired yet is because she's ANCIENT
It's hard to get an audience with instructor. You must channel your questions through her assistants
lee kooler/merchant is a very nice lady but i don't recommend that you take her class. she is very unorganized and does not teach during the class. not one assignment was went over during class you had to figure it out all on your own. she also doesn't explain very well what she wants. she would be a better online teacher.
Her class is alright. Her T.A.'s are annoying though. Her T.A.'s act like they're the teacher. There's a lot of essays which aren't MLA format, they're more of a research essay and you have maybe 10-13 through the semester and after the essay you have to do another one to back it up. It's a lot of work. Do the study guide if you take her.
This was the stupid class I have taken at MJC. Merchant (Kooler) treated us as if we were still in elementary school. I don't feel as if I learned one thing all semester. DON'T TAKE MERCHANT! She is awful.
Wonderful teacher!! Sure, she was a little unorganized, but she really has a passion for her profession and loves helping her students succeed!! If you need someone to hold your hand the whole time then this class is not for you
As a psych major I personally believe this professor has got to be the worst professor in MJC. Very unorganized, expect her students to be professional APA formatters/Writers.Her TA was useless and graded as if she was the professor. 3 group papers,1 partner research paper, 1 poster and 3 exams off the text book. Do the study guides and good luck!
Do not take her, I got an A in the class and I did not learn one thing. She was the worst teacher I have ever had and I decided to take psych 101 again with a different professor and I was taught more on the first day in that class then a WHOLE semester in Merchant/Kooler's class
easy class if you keep up with the portfolio's, don't slack off on it but don't over achieve on it, just do every assignment and you'll pass. she's full of herself and her skiing. don't take it with a significant other or you will be put on the spot.
She is really cool and super nice. There isn't too much homework, but quite a bit of reading. The classes were really interesting and very fun! I had a blast :)
She is one of the best teachers I have ever had! I got an A in the class. Her class was easy, interesting and fun! Your grade is pretty much based on essays and debates from what I remember. If you do the work, you'll get the grade. I definitely recommend her!
I loved her! She's high energy and never boring. The homework isn't due until the end of the semester and it was mostly easy. Just don't procrastinate and it shouldn't be too much. I got a 96% and I'm taking her again for psych 105
she is very nice but not very helpful she expects you to read the book and do the study guide but she doesnt completely review the material so your on your own in this class. dont forget your clicker Do all the homework!! don't procrastinate on the outrageous study guide!! 16 debate essays one make up essay at the end..dont take this class!!

AVOID HER CLASSES! She's a useless teacher. I took her abnormal psychology during the fall semester and the only thing abnormal was the fact that she doesn't teach. The TA's do everything for her and all we did were group projects. Name changed to Kooler, avoid her.
Merchant goes by KOOLER now. She's wonderful, funny, very helpful, and passionate about psychology. She's a little disorganized, but if you ask her to clarify, she certainly will.
AVOID HER CLASS!
She is very clear about what she wants and what she expects. As long as you follow her guidelines, show up to class, and stay on top of your assignments you'll easily pass. If you procrastinate or don't like to attend every class this is not the class for you!
This class has tought me the importance of learning from everyone around me. The presentations required by all of us tought me so much about different disorders. I love this class, and I love this professor! You have to pay attention and be a self motivator for this class, and passing will come easy.
