Excellent teacher, highly knowledgeable and very helpful. Fun and interesting class discussions. He is interested in hearing your opinion, not just his own. Lots of homework, but just short paragraph answers based on readings. Two papers and a multiple choice final. He teaches his class like its a major university class, so don't try to fake it.
Very hard class. A lot of work and homework every week. Lots of reading, hwk assignments, outside class assignment, and final. Tough class...
Nice guy, tough class, you will learn alot from him if you want to.
Very hard teacher. The homework is crazy. Interesting topics in class but not to helpful with emailing questions. Homework takea at least 6hrs to finish and even then you do not get a 100%.
Yes, this class is a lot of work. But he's very fair. He tells you exactly how much work it will on the first day. He accepts late homework, offers lots of extra credit, gives you the exam questions in advance. So I don't know why so many people are whining about this class. You're pretty much guaranteed an A or B if you do all the work.
HARD! lots of homework that will take up your whole sunday! I think this semester he was going through a lot of personal things but for the final he gives you the questions but to ask him for the answers is like pulling teeth. If you like to work hard go for this class...
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! Yes there is a lot of work so DO NOT take this class if you are a slacker-type. The HW is alot but straight from the books. He is straightforward about what he expects. You can easily get an A if you do the work and read. I am taking another one of his classes..that is how good he is!
He's pretty clear with topics but sometimes it gets boring (lots of talk) . Lots of homework but as loong as you keep up you will be fine. An easy A
A very good teacher and I can't believe that no one has hit the hotness button. I will do the honors and push it. Anyhow, through the hotness he is very clear and helpful. Those who said that they had a hard time didn't do the work. If you need this class I would highly recommend taking this course with Miller.
Very interesting class. Great Lectures. Show up because you need the notes from the lectures for the final. The homework is a lot of reading, but skimming works too. Final is easy if you study. No midterm, only mini-presentation. Do all the homework.
This class was by far my favorite in the two years that I have attended CSM. Attendances is a must to pass this class and there is only a final exam. He is also helpful with any questions that are asked. I have to take another PLSC class to graduate, I plan to take it with him.
One of the best profs at CSM. If you need to take PLSC, take it from Miller. Yes, he demands a lot but he only wants what's best for his students.
Lee is a great teacher and you will have to work hard for your grades, but you will learn a lot when you are done with this class. He is very straight forward and willing to help, but you must ask for it. Four text books, numerous websites, and outside of classroom work were required.
His class was very helpful for me and very interesting, great teacher in general
NICE GUY, BUT TOO MUCH WORK, HW DOESN'T LOOK LIKE MUCH JUST FIND THE ANSWERS OF THE Q'S HE ASSIGNS, BUT YOU HAVE TO DO LOTS OF CRAZY READINGS THAT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME JUST TO FIND ONE FREAKING ANSWER, AND EVERY HW HAS TO BE TYPED SO HAVE FUN BUYING INK FOR YOUR PRINTER OR SPENDING YOUR $. I WOULDN'T TAKE HIM.
I LOVE Mr. Miller! GREAT PROFESSOR! do your homework... which may be quite a load! His class will guarantee you AWESOME MEMORIES!
SUPER HARD CLASS! 6 hour home works, a semester of stress. This class will suck the life/joy out of u. Hes really into himself and constantly brags about his website, book and UCLA education. Sometimes the discussions were good but over all I would not recommend him. he doesn't care about attendance or late homework's but He willhappily to fail you.
Great teacher, loves what he's talking about. TONS of homework though. On the plus side, he allows late work and doesn't care how late it is--you can still get an 80%. Only one test, the final, so the hw is good to help boost your grade. Made the material interesting and is generous with extra credit. I would definitely take him again.
Very hard class with TONS of homework. Stay away!
A lot of homework,a lot of readings. I attended every class and I submitted almost all the homework(allbut one) but still got a B. I was very disappointed because I took notes and participate to class but he did not really care. There were students that came once in a while, gave 3 months old homework and NEVER wrote note and still got my grade :(
Amazing teacher.. Had him in the spring. The reason I became a PLSC major.. Very interesting subject. You're required to do a whole lot of reading and you have a weekly homework assignment that takes a few hours to do.. But otherwise hes a great guy and DEFINETELY will teach you something that wil be life lasting. Take him if your a serious learner
Pretty easy if you keep up with reading and dont let homework pile up. Its kind of a lot of reading sp dont take it if you arent interested in the subject. you'll just be turned off even more. But Miller is a cool guy and the class isn't hard if you keep up.
great teacher! is passionate about spreading his knowledge about different perspectives. Study guide for final is given with questions on the test
Dr. Miller is extremely passionate about Political Science. Attendance is taken every class meeting, asks if you have any questions, & will either go over the homework or start the day's lecture. There are 13 homework assignments that average 4-6 hours each. Keep up with the homework & reading or you won't pass. No tests or midterms. Just a Final.
I found the class very socialist oriented. Some students got extra credit by signing a petition he wrote. There were issues with work and ethics, one day he came into the classroom talking about his very personal issues. Homework assignments are interesting, but too long students in general get lost. The final exam study guide is not helpful.
He explains both the conservative and liberal sides fairly. It was refreshing to hear how a law affected him personally. Students then discussed how the same law affected their lives. He gave us extra credit for signing any online petitions, not just his. Gave us the actual final exam questions & answers prior to the final. Worth the work.
Great teacher really have a heart for the student to do well and achieve more in their life as well as for their country.
felt kinda condescending, his final is exactly what he said is on it but he had a paper before and i felt he wants me to explain parts his prompt did not ask me to explain.
Miller is a very nice guy and wants to see his students do well but the class is boring. Required to purchase many books and read a lot each week and do online quizzes. His in class lecture usually does not relate to the homework. grading is very confusing on websmart. Overall nice guy but boring lecture heavy class.
Keep up with the reading (there's a lot) and the online quizzes (weekly) and take good notes and you should pass. The quizzes are hard, but he lets you retake them, and he gives you the final exam questions in advance. Nice guy and he cares about his students.
The amount of reading you get in a week is nearly impossible because he expects you to read it over the weekend. Class lectures do not relate to what you read. The homework, aside from reading, isn't hard, it's just very time consuming. He offers a lot of extra credit and knows his stuff. Overall, this class was really hard for me.
Three or more textbooks, weekly readings, weekly online forums, weekly quizzes. The online quizzes could be hard but you can take them as many times you want, the highest score will be graded. Online forums (which i always forgot) is compulsory if you want to pass the class. and there's oral presentation too, with a partner. Overall it's okay :)
Do the forum posts and spend at least 30 minutes on each post or else you will lose easy points and it will affect your grade immensely. Quizzes are easy and you can retake them as many times as you like for full credit. Lectures are boring but you'll learn a lot. Only 12 kids were left on the day of the final. Picky grader on the forum posts.
All lecture. Grade was 10% presentation, 20% weekly forum, 30% quizzes, 40% final. Terrible feedback for the weekly forums, but you're able to redo the quizzes once per day for perfect scores. He gave out the final questions in advance and extra class meetings to answer some of them. Attend the extra meetings and redo the quizzes for an easy A.
Insane amount of work: weekly forums & quizzes & 100+ pages of reading! His lectures are interesting, but unless you want to spend 24/7 on political science, take this class with someone else.
He must have changed the syllabus from last years. The weekly online forums count for 25% your grade (he's a super-tough grader) and he's added a big 10 hour political participation project (30%). You can still retake the weekly quizzes as many times as you want, but they all only count for 10% of your grade. No easy A's. Half the class fails.
GOOD: You'll learn a lot. He's a serious scholar. Fascinating lectures. BAD: Tons of work. Tough grader. Half the class dropped by mid-October, and half of those remain are failing. OVERALL: If you're looking for an easy A, take someone else. If you're ready to spend 10 hours a week studying, and really want to learn, take Miller.
He gives a lot of readings, is really bad grading and is not fair. Homework is too much and he never talks about it before class he does after class, so you can easily get lost in any topic of the class. He's lectures are too long and boring.
In his intro class he gave out way too much work and expected people to make his class top priority. He is very overwhelming and gives out way too much work for an introduction class.
Honestly, I felt completed harassed in that class. He gives way too many questions per homework assignment and they are only worth 2 points each week. His lectures do not go with what you are reading about outside of class whatsoever. He doesn't explain things thoroughly even when asked again during class. Would not recommend.
Very time intensive homework wise, especially at the beginning of the semester. If one is a PS major it would be a good fit, and I did learn a lot about politics. Fair grader, and he is quite knowledgeable.
Seems hard to most at the beginning, but I found his lectures and assignments crystal clear and easy to follow. Just be sure to keep up on reading and you will find yourself enjoying this course. Grading criteria is spelled out and it's easy to get perfect scores as long as you follow it. Don't be daunted, ask questions. Would take again for sure.
I realized that it is better to take a difficult class (reading-intensive) where I actually learn, and Millers class is just that. The assigned reading is interesting. Miller really knows his stuff! His lectures are engaging, time flew by in this class. Tbh, this class has helped me to make decisions on tough political issues. Would take again.
If you want to know politics and how the American political system works, this is the class. Dr. Lee is very knowledgeable, he even wrote a book on Democracy. Reading is a must, do your homework, pay attention in class and ask a question. He is fair and want you to learn. I learned a lot and confident to express my point of view on political issue
This class really opened my eyes to how the world actually works. Both made me angry and inspired me to try to change things. There was a lot of reading and a lot of assignments. But having a lot of assignments was a good thing. I hate when your whole grade is based on just a couple of exams or papers. He was very generous with extra credit.
Lots of reading, lots of assignments. His grading rubrics are very clear. You know what you need to do. It's easy to get a B if you do all the assignments. Getting an A really requires a lot of work. He's a nice guy and his lectures are amazing. This class will change your life.
Super-nice guy, very understanding. Lots of assignments, which was really annoying at first. But as long as you actually do them, it's easy to get a decent grade. Gives lots of extra credit, including extra credit each time you turn in the weekly homework (on top of the points you earn on it). He gives you the final exam questions in advance.
Had a lot of personal things that came up and he was super understanding. He explained stuff to me in office hours, and the SI help leader did too. Used to be clueless about politics & government, but this class really opened my eyes. Assignments are challenging, and it might feel like you're failing, but in the end he cuts you lots of slack.
Miller rocks! He tries to scare you on the first day so that you don't get the idea this class is an easy A. It isn't. But it's an easy B. Just do your work and you'll do fine. Lots of reading, lots of assignments, lots of 2nd chances and lots of extra credit. Miller is super nice and understanding. His lectures are amazing!
Won't get an A if you aren't organized, consistent with attendance, or respectful. He teaches a college course so he will not hold your hand. Great prof. Top recommendations: sit in the front, work hard on presentations, be prompt with hw assignments (discussions), make every class a priority, and us BB Campus (App for books).
I didn't really understand or care about politics before I took this class. Miller is super-cool and really got me thinking about the world in a different way. I changed my major because of him. If you want to get an easy A, take someone else. If you want to change your life, and are willing to put in some effort, take Miller.
I recently got into politics last year and wanted to go more in depth. I learned even more things here than on my own. Lee Miller is a great professor. He doesn't sugar coat anything about our government. He's upfront and honest. He does call on you in class, but its nothing to be scared about. Do your work and you'll pass. Lots of good reads tho
Miller is a straightforward guy. Tells you what he wants from you and always reminds you of the assignment for the week. Just stay on top of the weekly quizzes and discussion forums and you should pass. The Final is a cumulative test but a lot of the questions are just off the quizzes so don't stress out. Do what he tells you and you'll be fine.
In Miller's intro class he gave out way too much work and expected people to make his class top priority. He is very overwhelming and gives out way too much work for an introduction class.
very annoying and pedantic grader. marks you down a lot and doesn't say why.
Lots of assignments, high workload. But he gives you a grading rubric for all of the assignments, so you know exactly what information to include to get an A. He explains his grading clearly and also lets you retake quizzes as many times as you want. Great lectures. I learned a lot.
Fun Civic Mirror simulation--you get to run a business, run for Congress and sue people. Easy to get a good grade: show up, do the assignments & participate. Grading rubric for the discussion tells you exactly what to write. He gave out the final exam questions on the 1st day--most of them are on the quizzes (which you can retake if you want).
Stay ahead and try and do the homework as early as possible or it will catch up to you. The reading can be heavy some nights but as long as you take good notes youll be good on the final and on the weekly quizzes. He does lecture towards the beginning of the year so be sure to take notes on those, as he will ask about it on be final. Chill guy.
Not an easy A. Miller is definitely more difficult than the other poli sci professors. It got frustration and stressful at time, but looking back at his class it was a really rewarding experience. His class is interesting and you will learn if you put in the work, it's a lot but you should. Participate it class, it will make the class for you
PLSC Online. He is one of the hardest teachers to live on this planet. You will read a lot. Discussion question and quiz is the routine. Lots of HW. Follow the rubric to perfection to get a good grade. Makes you work for the grade. He gives you great feed back. At times can be stressful and also rewardable. He makes you a better student.
Do not take him for PLSC 150. He does not lecture, but rather "leads" a discussion every class. In reality, he micromanages every class discussion we've had and wonders why students do not participate. His online discussions are impossible and are graded very harshly. Ex: he wanted us to read 300 pages of Plato's Republic in one week and analyze it
Waste of time. Had us read hundreds of pages per week of philosophy, but doesn't bother to lecture. Instead, we sit in a circle and have open discussion on the readings or current politics every day. Worse yet, his condescending nature dissuades the entire class from participating. Half the class dropped. Nothing was learned, no notes taken.
Definitely not a class for those not majoring in PLSC, but even if you are a PLSC major I would think twice about taking the is class. Professor does not lecture at all, has high expectations on HW, very unlikeable, and condescending. Overall I regret taking this professor and strongly recommend avoiding this professor when picking classes
Tbh the course load is fine and the work is tedious but doable. I was just very disappointed with the professor, however, at the end of the semester I expressed concern around my grade and he, unfortunately, failed to help. He grades pretty difficultl but the rubric is there. You will pass if you follow the rubric, he does little to ensure success
This class is an awesome choice. It wasn't too difficult, but there was still work involved including reading and class participation. The teacher is so smart, supportive, and insightful with a lot to offer. It was a great learning experience, I felt big personal growth as a student. I would take a class by him again for sure! Im sad it ended.
He is a great teacher. He gives great feedback on assignments and is easy to and also responds quickly online. Do the work on time and show up you are golden.
PLSC 150's structure is inherently flawed. The class's materiel is far too narrow, the period itself is a facilitated discussion instead of a necessary lecture on the material, and the directions for the final essay are poorly given while the essay itself is harshly graded. In essence, the class has been made unpassable.
Learned a lot! Miller doesnt believe in lectures or tests. Its all in-class discussions and online discussions with clear grading rubrics. Youre expected to do the readings and write/say something intelligent about how they relate to a just regime. If youre a whiner who wants somebody to lecture and tell you what to think, take another class.
Loved him as my professor. With distant learning being the new norm, he made sure to make the class easily understandable and organized.I learned a lot about politics. Would take his class again.
I enjoyed taking Miller's class, work load is not that bad, you take Inquestive Quizzes which allows you take it as many times as you want until you get a 100% and its very easy to get a 100% in those quizes. Discussion questions are a little more difficult but he gives detailed feedback through a rubric which is easy to understand and follow.
Professor Miller is detailed and has clear grading criteria. Although this was a very tough class (at least for me), I learned a lot in this class. -PLS200- workload felt like 4 units. -With discipline an A Is guaranteed. -I would take again.
Professor Lee is a phenomenal teacher who wants to see his students succeed. Every assignment is left with comments to understand both why you got your grade or how to improve. Granted you have to put in the effort, but he gives you all the tools you need and more to do well. The book and podcasts connect the class to our lives. I recommend
this is such a bad class I would not recommend it
Pretty straightforward class. Students are graded on biweekly quizzes from two readings, biweekly discussion posts on about an hour-long podcast or video, and political participation. The quizzes have unlimited tries and the discussions have a clear outline. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. No final.
Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to, I was not a political science major and had very difficult time with the court work altogether, discussions are lengthy and he is a hard grader.
If you take this class, you must be motivated and self-reliant enough to remember to do your work since there is no regular zoom. It comes down to what works best for you when deciding. There are plenty of extra credit opportunities, and office hours to go to if you need assistance, and the professor is very quick at responding to emails.
Class was very easy, but he was not a nice guy. Whenever I interacted with him, I got the feeling that he didn't like his job. He also makes you buy his self-published novel. Take the class if you really need credit and you already know about politics. Otherwise, it's frustrating. If you really wanna learn about the subject, find another professor.
Learned a lot. You can work on the quizzes until you get a pefect score on them. Gives great feedback on the political participation assignment before you turn it in for a grade. The discussions, on interesting podcasts & videos, really make you think. You need to read most of your classmates' posts to find the ones you disagree with to reply to.
Too much work! Discussions are about the wrong doings of the US, US politics, and graded like essays. He makes you disagree with your classmates even if you don't. You have to buy his book to read one chapter from it, after you already purchased one book and an inclusive book for the class. He pushes his own opinion about politics on you.
Professor is very difficult to email and is very blunt when it comes to reply. Be sure to be engaged with large amounts of sarcastic emails from the professor. Will never take a class from this professor again and I am glad I have finished the class.
This class is a lot of work, but that means that you can mess up & bounce back. You can redo assignments. I really like how the book focuses on the history of American politics from the perspective of race relations. The professor is very caring. When I had some personal problems, he was very supportive and helped me find a way to finish the class.
He taught this like a college course. Students whining in their reviews about how hard it was seem to think they're still in high school. It was easy as long as you did the readings & followed the directions, which were very clear. Discussions required some critical thinking. Exams you work on till you get 100%. Gave great feedback on paper drafts.
Class was fun. We did a US politics simulation where we ran for office, made laws, invested in real estate, bought and sold stuff, had mock trials, etc. There were also quizzes that you could keep working on until you got 100%. The political participation project was more work, but you submitted drafts and could fix anything wrong. Nice guy.
Professor Miller is a great teacher! He emails back quickly and will help you when needed. The biggest piece of advice I can give is to read his instructions for discussion posts and the political participation project. Those determine your grade more than the quizzes. No final though!
Workload: Weekly quizzes for textbook (50-90 well-made multiple choice questions) Biweekly discussions (200+ words. People need 600+ words to cover the topic + 100+ word response) Political participation project (DO NOT start this the last week of class) As a sophomore in HS, he and the class are both great but a lot of work. There's extra credit.
do not take if you're not a polisci major. extremely tough grader, graded basically all on discussions >> you have no room to make mistakes. you basically have to be perfect which is unfair to students. follows rubric too closely for an intro class. i'm sure he's a great guy, but this class will damage your gpa.
He tells you up front that this shouldn't be your first class in poli sci or philosophy. Readings are hard and long. Discussions have clear instructions, but he's a hard grader. The final paper builds on the earlier assignments. You turn in a draft, he gives detailed feedback, and then you redo & resubmit. Everyone got an A or B on the rewrites.
210 with Professor Miller was a great experience. 3 types of assignments: quizzes (lots of them), discussions (biweekly), and a political project (DO NOT PROCRASTINATE). Professor Miller was so knowledgeable, and clear grading criteria, and gave respectful feedback to the class. The discussions really zoom into topics and teach you a lot. Take it!!
He is a kind professor who provides excellent feedback. I do suggest to always carefully read the rubric. There are discussions that are bi weekly and quizzes every week. And a project for your final.
My experience with Prof. Miller has been great. As long as you do the readings, watch the lectures, and follow the rubric you'll be good. He always provides helpful feedback and extra credit opportunities as well. It can be a challenge, but a good challenge. You are graded mostly on discussion posts and a final paper.
Professor Miller is a sophisticated, knowledgable, and respectful instructor. His serious attitude toward teaching is precious and also encourage students who are eager to challenge themselves. Making the most of his office hours can leverage your study with him. I deeply appreciate his generosity in dedicating time to his students.
At first, the professor's strictness and detail-oriented feedback were overwhelming. Over time, I saw their value, improving my understanding. His clear teaching transformed complex topics into manageable lessons, greatly enhancing my experience at CSM and changing my initial perception to admiration. His knowledge of the subject was impressive.
Dr. Miller is an excellent professor. His instruction is always clear, and his feedback is constructive. His grading scale makes sense if you do your readings, reading quizzes, and watch content. I now have a stronger understanding of our political system because of the quality of his assignments. I would take a class with him again!
Incredibly unlikeable. I'm sure he's a good professor, but he's impossible to reason with, gives little to no room even with accommodations. The final draft for the essay was never graded for me due to my definition of justice being credited as a laundry list. He asked me to revise and resubmit, but then just never graded it. Do not recommend.
Professor Miller does an amazing job structuring an asynchronous online course that teaches fundamental political theory. Students are set up for success between the Yale Open Course lectures, readings, explicitly outlined rubrics, weekly office hours, and plenty of extra credit. Professor Miller is communicative and passionate about PLSC.
Terrible teacher and a horrible leader! I think I spent more time on assignments than I have for any other class just to receive a horrible grade. Not sure why he had such a problem with me, but if you seem to disagree with anything this guy thinks he will use it against you, and it will affect your grade! He should rethink about teaching. Thanks
Professor Miller is a great professor, but man is his class hard (in a good way). Readings are long and hard, some questions for the Discussion posts may be a bit unclear, but if you do the readings and take good notes you will be fine. He also gives plenty of extra credit, so if you put in the work, it's impossible to get anything lower than a C.
Dr. Lee Miller's POL200 was an introductory course about American Politics. Dr. Lee Miller gives very clear grading criteria and insightful feedbacks. I especially like the weekly discussions. Inspirational topics were chosen and interesting materials were provided, making politics easier to understand. I learned a lot from his class.
Great class, very well organized and informative. The books are easy to read, the quizzes helped understand and recognize the material. Professor Miller responds to emails quickly and provides excellent recommendations. I highly recommend this class.I enjoyed this class! Thank you Professor!
Professor Miller is a very knowledgeable professor. Yes, he will challenge you to do your best and complete homework on time, but will give you a chance to explain why something is not submitted. Gives feedback all the time which were very helpful.
This professor is one of the worst professors I've ever taken at CSM. He grades like a tyrant on discussion posts and even if you meet all the requirements highlighted in the rubric for the assignments he will still find a way to mark down you down. Not to mention he often releases multiple exams on the same days with it taking hours to finish.
He definitely knows his stuff, and I will admit that his assignments can be a bit much, especially the reading. However, I appreciate how much he encourages people to keep up with politics and his approach to teaching Political Science.
The class was actually fun because since I like politics it all made sense and using inquizitive was nice because I still had room to raise my grade. It wasn't difficult but it would make you think in good ways. -Inquizitive every week -no final -one research project -Don't get a letter grade until the end
Whoever has a "5" rating for this guy must have a different professor than I did. Because of how much criteria was in the discussions, they ended up being over 700 words. Never got one perfect. Stuff is due on Tuesday, and has no room for error in grading. Makes you read his own book. 2-3 "exams" 80+ questions due basically every Monday. STAY AWAY!
Professor Lee's PLSC200 was challenging but rewarding. Clear expectations and insightful feedback helped me learn a lot. Unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the textbook and discussions.
Offers a fair amount of extra credit assignments. The discussions are weekly so it should not be too stressful. Don't forget to respond to two classmates and express respectful disagreement, he's teaching critical thinking in politics so he wants you to disagree. The final paper is very important, make sure to go to office hours for that.
Honestly this class was difficult but I learned a lot. It's very text heavy, along with Yale lectures that are 40+ minutes long and homework seems it comes fast… def fast paced class. Professor provides clear grading criteria, is always open to talk in office hours, and provides A LOT of extra credit. Ended with A+. Pushed me as a student to excel
