Thought she was funny. She is very liberal and that adds alot to the class. I enjoyed the writing assinments and the freedom to branch out and write about anything i wanted. She is picky about details but thats her job...I guess? I'd recommend her c
I could not stand her for the theories class. She believes so strongly in the chaos theory and it shows through in each class, she can not follow one train of thought. He quizes are easy, but time consuming. I have to retake the class, I didn't like her.
lee is a master fiction writer and as such brings her skills to class. she always critiqued my work in a very honest way - not to mention i want to have her babies.
Jumps around a lot. Hard to keep track of what she is talking about. But she's not too bad
Mortensen and I had discussed my grade before the semester had ended and had both agreed that the grade I earned was a b. She ended up giving me a C on my final grade!!! I couldn't believe this!!!I then wrote her an email regarding this matter and no answer.
If you enjoy women's right's speeches and hippie babble then you might enjoy this class. Not that I am against it, but lets read something that has a man in it for once. She is kinda cool, very opinionated and she expected everyone to be Ivy League right away, I didn't appreciate that.
She bounces around too much, and class seems to have no meaning, TONS of reading (even for a lit class). but the main thing is I haven't learned anything, because she doesn't focus and that's annoying. She expects us to know things she hardly touches on
She was a bit of a shock in her teaching style for me. She does ALOT of theory in what she discusses. She only had the syllabus compeleted two weeks into the semester at the beginning. I recommend making sure that you do all assignments EARLY, that way you get to know her "grading" style sooner.
easily the funniest professor i've had, but yes, the class was a platform for women/lesbian/gay rights and seemed to have little to do with postmodernism and a LOT to do with literary theory. i was very disappointed in this class, though i like her as a person. hilarious! (just very schizophrenic in her teaching style.)
Had to change required books three times... need i say more
Lee is a brilliant writer and always critics my writing fairly and honestly. Lots of reading good books I don't think I would have been exposed to otherwise. She the way to go for creative writing.
She's a very smart lady and if you want to be a writer one day take her corse but on the other hand if your taking english because you have too don't take her class
She's incoherent, gives no standards/templates for work. All knowledge comes from either you or fellow students. Total HW time a week 20-30 hours. If you are super organized w/ a lot of free time on your hands, and want your writing to become a target take this class. If not, don't. Going to probably have to retake, messed up my whole semester.
Lee is difrent my first impresion was what a wierd teacher. She has a fun personality but is hard to understand what she wants she expects a lot perfection almost. I would not take her again.
I have taken both of Lee's creative writing classes and love how she will push the student to "give me more, more!" She is not for the faint of heart because she wants the squares to try and be more than ordinary. All those who say no to her class are chicken!
obsessed with rhetoric!!! and pronounces it wrong just like the rest of utahhhr!
She Basically sucked.... she was very inconsistent with grading... just not good... will not take again.
Lee is fantastic. I was never really confused by anything that she assigned, but if I had a question, it was easily answered by her. Everything you need to know for her classes is on her website. I would take classes from her anytime.
Lee was the worst teacher I have ever had, she was inconsistent with everything... grading, her opinion, you name it. She really is a wacko... NEVER take a class from her!!!! You dont even know what your grade is until the end of the semester, very annoying! Also, she has a myspace, check it out. lol
Lee is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. She has a great sense of humor. This is a creative writing class - she really helps you push your subjects and become more creative and involved. She is a great teacher - she always has a syllabus online for you to look at - unlike ANY of my of my other teachers.
Lee is not for the faint of heart. Crazy, and crazy smart. EVERYTHING is on her online syllabus. She updates it every day and adds interesting links based on class discussion, etc. A lot of reading to keep up with. She is a tough grader, but you can always email her with your concerns and questions if you are lost. She's really very helpful.
Lee is open minded and funny and an awesome writer...bad rating on 4/2/06 needs to take her again, made 3 grammer errors..many LDS students don't like differing opinions that she has..but I love it for a change!
I really liked Lee! She has great opinions, and a lot of good insight. There is a lot of writing to do, but its worth it. You learn so much from her making you write. She has an online syllabus with everything on it so it makes it easy to keep track of what you have to get done.
Very good, I liked her a lot. I learned a LOT about writing too. It's college, keep up.
Comment on 04/02 was right. if your an english major then she's good, if your just taking for required class then you might want someone else. She is easily sidetracted, never really teaches.... just sorta talks about random subjects. No organization to her grading whatsoever. Changes her class outline once a week. Be ready to be very flexible.
I will never take her again. I am half way into the semester and still have absolutely no idea what's going on. I have attended every class and pay attention but haven't been able to grasp the very high level vocabulary she uses. I never know what she is talking about and her online syllabus is useless. It makes about as much sense as she does.
Here are a few guidelines when trying to decide if you'd like to take a class from Mortensen..DON'T take her class if you are sensitive about your mormon beliefs. DON'T take her class if you can't read, write and understand English in general at a college level. DO take her class if you like to think outside the box and have a good sense of humor.
Worst teacher ever. All she talked about was sex and lesbians. Get over it and go on with the class!!! She did not go one class period without mentioning that. She changed her syllabus every week!!
I'm not sure what the rest of ya'll were on but Lee was the bee's knees. She's not your average english teacher, if you're creative and are willing to see multiple views you will thrive in her classes. Beware though if you are a square with your panties in a twist you will get nothing out of this class. Open mind + Originality = A
She doesn't require a textbook. She has an online syllabus that makes you feel like you are taking her English class online. She's a soft grader, but she does critics your writing a lot. I had to work very hard in her class. We had 2 6-8 page papers and the final was a book report. She makes you write lots of 1 page reactions.
She is horrible. Do not take her class. She is not understanding and is very proud to be a lesbian. Class never started on time and she never planned it before class. I do not recommend this class.
will push your boundaries. lot's of work but its stuff that is interesting and will help you out. emphasis on critical thinking (doesn't force own opinions). expect the syllabus to change even during class time. sometimes had a hard time following along but eventually figured things out.
Mortensen, lets just say cannot teach what she wants to teach. She cannot make her point clear of what she wants. She looks everything up online to try to show how to do it. For essays, good luck on trying to guess what your paper is supposed to be about. Picky grader. Not the best, choose another teacher
Lee is the mastermind of Creative Writing! If you love exploring your writing abilities and like playing with different styles - take her. She gives excellent feedback on your work, never forces her opinion on you, and is spot-on on where you need improvement.
She is Terrible. I read this website before I got into the class, and I thought that I could work hard enough to be one of the few that get a good grade in this class. I have always been a good writer and apparently none of those skills matter. I'll be lucky to pull off a C in this class according to her.
I went into the class with an open mind and tried as hard as I possible could on every single essay. It was so hard to understand what the assignment was. If at all possible, don't take her. She cancels class all the time, she stutters a ton, and she isn't very clear about what she expects. Nigh impossible to get an A. I worked SO HARD.
Too hard for an intro class. classes not well prepared and syllabus changed weekly. Took TOO long to give feedback and needs to give students much more. Teacher knows how to write and feedback given was valuable. Assignment expectations were vague.
She made this class way too hard for an intro. class. She changed the syllabus constantly. I was always confused on what to do for the assignments. She makes this class harder than it needs to be and I feel that she made me a worst writer. I would not recommend her.
Gives way too much homework. More homework than any other 1010 and 2020 classes. I had and still have no clue what I was suppose to learn from that class.
I'm English major and I love to write. She is the worst professor I have ever had. I just can't stand her liberal agendas and annoying voice. I also think she is a poor teacher and I don't think I learned anything in her class. She was whining the other day that she didn't get paid enough and I thought, You're the suckest teacher ever.
don't take Mortensen if you want a good teacher. she has a really annoying voice and she doesn't teach. I didn't heed the warnings from Rate my Professor and I regret it.
Class discussion was always interesting, she has a great sense of humor, and I loved the selection of readings she chose. She is quite liberal but isn't disrespectful of conservative viewpoints. She did tend to get distracted & go off on tangents (I can see introductory courses being more difficult with her). Can't wait for my next class with her!
Lets see where to start, I feel i am a much worse writer since taking her class. She always missed and canceled class. Her lectures were almost impossible to understand. Then even though the semester had ended she was still having assignments due. I would never take a class from her again!
She's is awful. I think that she made me a worse writer. She cancels class all the time and expects you to know how to do the assignments even though she doesn't teach. DO NOT TAKE HER!! You will regret it, I did.
Run Away
Okay, Lee is one of the best teachers in the English department. She will push your writing to better heights if you are willing to put in the work. Her syllabus is always changing and adapting to what the class needs at the moment...if only every teacher could do the same. It is college and you WILL work...hard.
Her Critical theories class was my favorite class of the semester! I thought that she was funny, a little hard to follow at times, but she keeps everybody very engaged! She did miss class fairly often, and her syllabus changes a lot, but I consider her flexibility a plus. Probably not a good idea to take her for an intro class, but I recommend her
Take this class if you want to fail. She is not helpful at all, i haven't been given feedback on 3 papers we have written. She cancels class half the time so when an assignment come around nobody knows how to do it. Yet she expects it to be done. Oh well. Pick a different teacher.
If i knew i could have gotten out of the class at the beginning of the semester, i would have! she constantly cancels class and is super disorganized. i do NOT recommend!
Her grades are more based on how much you improve and less of how good of a writer you are (at least for the 3420 class). There's a lot of work involved, so you can't be lazy. Her comments are very helpful and she does try and broaden your horizons by introducing you to new material. Overall, she's a great professor!
I really enjoyed the class. You will want to follow the lecture, though it is hard. Ask questions. She meets with students twice a semester, I HIGHLY suggest meeting with her. Those are almost more helpful then class!!! If you fail this class it is your own fault. Her late work policy is very flexible as well. I enjoyed the class overall.
Probably the worst English teacher I have ever had. Don't expect her to ever be on time and don't plan things right after class since she will whine if you leave while she's still talking. She doesn't hand assignments back on time and grades rough. I got an 80% on one paper and it was the second highest grade. Everyone drops the class...it's awful!
She knows her stuff. Pay attention and ask questions because I promise you, your writing will improve. She gives about 65 extra credit points (easy). She clearly explains assignments, and what she is looking for. Great Professor!
Worst English teacher i have ever had. it is terrible to listen to her talk because she cant get through a sentence without breathing heavy like she just got done sprinting up a flight of stairs. She is completely unorganized. Any time you come to class thinking you are caught up, surprise! you are actually missing 4 assignments. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
I think I hate this woman. She has tons of reading every day but only talks about the ones from weeks ago. If you ask her a question, ya, she'll talk, but not about anything related to what you wanted to know. She's hard, only because you have no idea what she wants. I was super excited for this class till she destroyed by will to live.
Had several classes with this teacher, she helped my greatly improve my writing abilities
Unorganized!!!!
This teacher take a very long time to get grades back to you, I am now at the end of the semester with only half of all my things turned in being graded. She tends to grade papers a little off of opinion. She also acts like you need to be an English prodigy to get an A in her class, I would only recommend this class if you are amazing at English.
This was the worst teacher that I have ever had! She didn't explain things at all and she is extremely slow with getting grades in!
She's very confusing, really hard to focus in her class and grades really tough
This is my first rating on this website, please trust me, if you are not an organized student DO NOT take this class. She is very dissorganized, most of her assignments were due in the wrong semester. Lectures are boring and there is something due every single class- don't take if you haven't taken English for a while- HEED MY WARNING!!
I wish I could give her the benefit of the doubt, BUT this Class flat out SUCKS! So confusing! You leave class more confused than trying to interpret an Obama Speech! If your looking for English 1010, this CLASS IS NOT FOR YOU we went from 30 plus students to 8 within 6 weeks!
She has some good BASIC concepts that she teaches that are good, the problem is anyone can teach these concepts. Other than that She is very confusing, she's not a good idea for entry level classes. She also likes o steel thunder from students who have good idea which created a lot of disinterest in her class for me. she grades hard
The first day that I walked into this class I knew I should have got out. I deiced that I would push my self and take the class. Big mistake... working a full time job there was no way I could keep up with her homework. We had 1-3 assignments due every class period. In the end I gave up and now I am going to retake the class with another professor
Walking into class that first day was something I was dreading because it was the first day. By the 3rd week that dread intensified and I now want to just not show up anymore. Her lectures are jokes and her assignments completely ridiculous. We''ve focused on the same thing for the past three weeks and it''s just becoming completely over rated.
She is very indirect about her assignments and what she wants out of you. She spends too much time talking about irrelevant things, and not enough time talking about things that actually matter.
What she expected in her papers didn't make sense. Her lectures were good but she pretty much read to us what was on the calendar. She does try to teach us but I think we needed more of how to arrange papers, paragraphs, etc. instead of showing us examples. She tries to help and make sure you pass. She gives good advice.
Never take a course from her! You will suffer and lament, and your mind will shatter. She expects perfection out of you and never gives coherent lectures. She grades hard just because, and expects the work of a 9 credit class to be done in 3 credits. You will only learn from yourself in her classes. Don't expect help, or a clear schedule of work.
Lectures are long and rambling, often unclear as to what she expects. Assignments come at seemingly random intervals, and we only covered a small fraction of the assigned reading either in class, or in assignments.
Very vague with assignments, used class to ramble about irrelevant topics, nobody knew the guidelines or due dates for the assignments. Attendance was mandatory though pointless. Tons of unannounced busy work assignments which we were supposed to know about via telepathy. Terrible at keeping grades current. Everybody drops the class. I wish I did.
Lee is a fresh of breath air in the Utah County bubble!
This professor is highly unorganized. The links for submitting assignments are never active and due dates are adjusted when you get to class. You buy lots of books but don't use them all. If you are looking for a really effective upper division class to help expand your writing skills find a different faculty.
Spends 15 or more minutes of many classes changing assignments. Assignments on several websites which don't agree with each other. It's difficult to tell whether or not assignments are missing. She rambles on in class during "lectures". Directions on assignments are highly confusing, and she doesn't answer questions clearly.
Does not grade papers until the semester has ended, claims she has high expectations and that is why people get low grades, the more accurate example is she uses it as an excuse for her poor teaching. from the whole semester we got feedback on one paper. the rest have not been graded 2 weeks after the semester ended. DO NOT TAKE
I don't even know how to describe Miss Lee. ASK QUESTIONS! The only reason I got an A is because I sucked up and clarified everything I was confused about. If you care about the class, she will care about you and your grade. Try and you'll be fine.
Didn't enjoy her class or the subject. Very monotone, didn't really seem interested in her own course, but she was very thorough in explaining assignments.
Every class I would zone out because she would ramble about the same thing for 40 minutes. When it came to understanding what we were suppose to do she would tell us to look at the calendar which was just as unorganized and hard to understand as her. Don't take the class.
I didn't learn jack in this class. She mostly tried to push her world views into the subject and she would ramble about different subjects for half the class. I zoned out or played games on my phone. She didn't make the topic interesting and I had no desire to go to class. Find a different teacher.
This is one professor I would run away from. She is unorganized, unprepared, lazy, and uninteresting. She barely grades papers and rambles most classes about pointless world views that she feels justified in sharing. You won't learn anything and she will irritate any sane person. I am confused as to why this person still has a job at UVU. Run away!
Honestly... From day one there was no structure... Assignments were not clear. Expectations were not clear. She cancelled class the week after fall break to "catch up" on grading, but didn't grade a thing! Saw one grade in September, and didn't see another one until the final grade. Impossible to see what your grade was during the semester.
Horribly unorganized. Would write her lesson plans during class. Didn't grade any assignments until after the term was over so there was no way of knowing how well you really did. Frequently forgot to add assignments to canvas & changed due dates. Frequently rambled off topic. As a Freshman, if she was my only teacher, I would have dropped out.
Professor Mortensen is VERY knowledgeable when it comes to effective ways to construct creative nonfiction pieces. I learned a lot from her lectures and from the readings she assigned. The structure of the class is a little confusing, but she is understanding and you can get the work in. My only complaint is there was too much busy work.
When I say this is the worst professor I've ever had I mean it. I've never been so frustrated with a teacher. By the end of the semester only 7 of us actually showed up because class was ran so badly. Very unorganized. I did every assignment well and showed up to every class and alas I still got a low grade. Didn't put grades in all semester either
She has an unclear grading criteria, it also took her till the end of the semester when class was let out to start grading assignments so I didn't know what she expected from me, because I didn't know what sort of grade I was getting due to the lack of feedback. She often went off on random tangents that were highly inappropriate and unrelated.
She doesn't grade anything until the very end of the semester, so you have no idea what your grade is. She doesn't use Canvas well, but rather puts everything on an outdated and hard to sift through personal website. Her lectures are off-topic and rambling, consisting of things that should be taught in high school. Strange and ineffective workshops
I hate being negatively critical but this is the worst teacher/class experience I've ever had. No one really had any idea what was going on. Due dates were constantly pushed back. The most frustrating thing was that nothing was graded until the end of the semester, so no one had any idea if they were passing or not until the very end.
Prof Mortensen is THE BEST!! Her vocabulary alone is reason enough to take her class! She never uses the same word twice! And when learning new literary approaches this is extremely helpful. She is personable and speaking to her outside of class is professional, yet personable. Not hard, just do the 10 min of homework, keep up. You'll get an A!
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Lee never was prepared and spent half the time talking about something that had no relevance. She didn't grade a single assignment until after the semester was over.
Absurdly disorganized. Assignment expectations are unclear, gives no rubrics. Takes FOREVER to grade things. Grades harshly anyway. Turned in an essay--as far as I could tell it met all assignment requirements, she told me MANY things she liked about it, then gave me an 85 because it was "rough." Expects more from you than she does from herself.
Taking this class felt pointless. I would go to class but instead of talking about anything useful, we would be drawn away on a wild tangent. Over the semester we went from 20 students down to just 4 of us. Very unorganized and wasn't able to follow her teaching whatsoever. Would not take this professor.
Goes on tangents and barely discusses/focuses on course work. Gives little to no useful feedback on writing and is very unpredictable with grading/homework. Isn't clear on what she wants and barely teaches.
Lee was kind of awful. Extremely disorganized, would show up to class 5-10 minutes late, and would give herself a time limit and then go 15 minutes over it. I didn't know when the homework was due. To be fair I did learn something from her but that was after doing a 1on1 where she explained herself but I didn't understand her feedback until then.
Lee was very disorganized. She doesn't grade anything in a timely manner or fairly. If you hit all requirements for an assignment she will give you 80% not 100% because that's 'passing.' If you want an A prepare to go above requirements. I had to get 5 books for her class which cost more than one textbook. Avoid taking a class by her!
Very disorganized, the semester is over and she is still grading things from February. She would add assignments at the last minute and would change things at random. Five textbooks, a whole lot of reading, and she would never give full credit. Only good thing was the teacher conferences, she gave good feedback on my submissions.
Assignments wouldn't be added to the calendar, so she would change due dates frequently. There's a lot of reading, but everything you read isn't really applicable to the module and feels like a waste of time. Minimum of two 1000+ word stories are due each week and another assignment. Wouldn't recommend if you want to improve or start your writing.
Lee is very unclear with their expectations for assignments. The class work as well as homework has to meet very particular specifications in order to be considered "passable" to them. I feel like I didn't really learn anything from taking their class. The whole experience was just pretty discouraging.
Lee Mortensen isn't all that organized. For a while, the canvas page wasn't even fully updated and I wasn't sure what work I needed to do. From my end, she updated it right as a big deadline was around the corner. Now I'm playing catch up. The readings she posts don't really matter to playwriting. Lots of busy work and guess work on the homework.
Prof didn't know how to use canvas & made things unnecessarily difficult from the start. They loaded on more weekly reading than what was reasonable for the lessons being taught. I felt like I was doing a million things for this class without actually learning anything important. Would not recommend--practicing my writing alone has helped me more.
Her class is so unorganized. Canvas is a mess and super difficult to understand. She adds so many things last second and is always switching the due dates. A lot of her class sources we read and use are liberal which isn't a problem but I signed up for an english class not a political class that makes me read things that I would rather not read.
Very disorganized. Provides contradicting feedback and short email responses. Not a single paper was graded until after the term ended. Last-minute assignments added to Canvas. Sent me someone else's graded paper on the last day. Required repetitive note-taking. Required multiple essays & a 384 page read the final two weeks of the term.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had! The teacher pushed her political, religious, and sexual agenda. Didn't even have a choice in the books we read, lots of textbooks required. Assignments were confusing; never knew what to do and never had a rubric ever, also graded hard. There wasn't any guidance. Would NEVER take this class from her again!
The professor gave lots of assignments. Don't take this class if you aren't prepared for lots of writing. Never graded any of the assignments until end of the semester. Required to meet with her twice during semester, that helped the most. Would probably never take her again. Did not like her teaching methods or appreciate the reading material.
She doesn't know how to use Canvas at all. Her stuff is EVERYWHERE and unclear what needs to be done. IF she grades things she never leaves a comment on it to explain why your grade came out that way. She uses an AI checker that doesn't work and will flag your essays when you don't use AI and when you're writing about personal experiences.
The ratings scared me but I had to take her and I'm surprised how easy her class was. Won't lie, got away with reading just the first and second week. All writing and if your meeting the clear stated requirements, its easy. Easy when you give effort. don't wait to the last minute.
She took an extremely long time to grade assignments- three months for one of the essays. Once they were graded there was very little feedback on assignments that she would dock 12+ points on. She pushed her own political ideas onto assignments and her main comments in consults were about her stance against my thesis instead of writing technique.
A disorganized class with last-minute changes and unclear grading. However, using tools like unstuck AI alongside the textbook can help navigate the challenges. Overall, be prepared for a chaotic but manageable experience.
