Stand-up comic of religion. You won't fall asleep in his class.
Had him for one semester in 1983 when I could've cared less about school. No slides, videos--just straight lecture--a great class. His books are fun reads, too. I hold him personally responsible for me ultimately ending up a prof myself!
Great teacher, very interesting subject matter and did a great job representing the different religions fairly. Would totally take another class from him some other time. Tests are a little different, but hes a fair grader.
He's a funny guy and cracks a lot of jokes in class. His test is a killer on the arm...50 short answer questions. But its on a curve so its not bad.
funny and clear. straight lectures but they are well organized and entertaining. take his class if you ever get a chance. one of the best profs at UHM
lectures get kindda boring but he is very funny. to get a good grade go to the class before the midterm and final, he goes over most of the terms. and it's graded on a curve
Well-prepared, magnetic lecturer. Heard one other student say that he is the best lecturer at UHM. Admire the way he is accessible to the average student yet informative to the student who has a prior interest or education in religion. He's a smart one. Pity that its only lecturing, though.
siegel is the best professor i've ever had. he's funny and knows his stuff. no attendance or quizzes. his tests are writing a few sentences for 50 terms. he pretty much gives you the terms. just go to the lectures and take notes. i've never seen so many people attend a lecture. popular guy.
Great teacher, very funny. Makes class interestig to attend. Only two test 50 terms choosen from the notes, than write two important facts talked about in class about each. Curve is also sometimes applied. Can recieve an A in this class oif you put a litttle effort in.
he is a very entertaining professor...and also gives very good, well prepared lectures.
Awesome teacher. He is funny and interesting. His lectures are always full. One of the best professors I've had.
He is the greatest storyteller. He makes the subject extremely entertaining.

Cracked me up.
This guy is amazing! You have to take his Intro class. Makes religion intersting, funny, and meaningful all at the same time.

If there is one teacher how is truly gangster then Siegel is the man. All you gotta do is see him on the history channels History of sex and you can see he knows his****
Interesting teacher. His view and deliverence of the subject is really good. I actually went to all the classes and learned a lot :)
Fun and conducive to a relaxed teaching environment where you can learn in the abscence of pressure.
Professor Siegel is totally awesome!!! I love how he gets off subject and tells interesting stories that somehow relate what we're talking about in religion! He's also HILARIOUS! No teacher has made me cry laughing so hard! Thanks for the stories Professor!
His tests are really hard. His T.A's are tough on the grading. His lectures are really hilarious and intertaining. Show emotion when his mic strangles him.
siegel is my favorite by far out of all my teachers this semester. he is such a character. his lectures are hardly ever boring and he constantly reviews. the exam wasn't too hard. his TAs were hard graders. however the curve is super good. he really is an awesome teacher and a funny guy. laugh at his jokes and he'll love you...seriously.
This class is hard period. I studied so much for the test and i still didn't get a good grade. He grades way too hard for, he sometimes tells funny jokes but its not funny enough to make me laugh.
Extremely good at giving lectures. His TA's are a bit tough with the grading.
his TA's are definity hard graders. but his lectures are never dull. kinda kooky prof but the class is worth taking.
I enjoyed going to class. His lectures beat any other lectures I've had. He's so corny but fun to listen to. The TA's grade the exams, and I would say they're pretty tough graders, cause the exams seemed so easy, but the grade didn't show it.
A real nice guy. His lectures jump all over but he seems to cover all his bases. The second part of the semester was definitly tougher. Your grade is ONLY the midterm and the Final, so watch out! If you are not a good test taker don't take this course. I learned a lot though and class was always entertaining. He sorta pokes jokes at all religions
Highly recommend this class. It is tough though, esp. the second test. He is funny and makes the class interesting yet I believe two tests is not enough to base an entire grade of off.
Great lecture he really gives you a perspective on many different religions using witty stories. Test are challenging but not impossible. Final was definitely harder than the midterm. The class was never dull.
You need to attend every class because he gives terms and defines them. Class is a bit boring at times but he occasionally tells stories and examples that interesting and makes the students laugh. Exams are entirely based on the terms so take good notes and study them like crazy. Just going to class and not taking any notes will not get you a C.
This guy is pretty funny. One time he hid behind his podium while acting out bible scriptures with a mosses action figure. He also fills most of his lectures with jokes. THe tests were harder than I thought they would be, but they are still pretty easy.
Take this class. He's a chain smoking guy stuck in the 80's. His jokes are soo funny and does voices and draws pictures on the overhead. Theres two test. It's really easy just as long as you wrote notes on each key term. One time there was a cockaroach on the floor and put it on the overhead and compaired it to the lowest darhma...
Really smart. Entertaining and really laid back.
This guy is hilarious. His jokes will knock you over, literally.
class seemed useless to me. attendance is mandatory if you want the correct defitions for the terms on the exams. there are only two exams to make-up your grade. i didn't learn anything. his jokes weren't that funny and it seemed like i was wasting my time.
He separates out whats important for you and is very concise.
HILARIOUS TECHER! I went to a Catholic School for 12 years and I learned more from him about religion in ONE semester! He is so funny, knows his stuff!! He is so kooky and you'll enjoy lectures. No textbook, just posts key terms online. Tests are 30 terms that you have to identify....STUDY BEFORE! TAKE SIEGEL!! BEST PROFESSOR AT UH, BY FAR!!!
Very very funny. No book. Going to class is helpful to stay up on whats going on, but isnt mandatory. He gives a midterm and a final that are both pretty easy as long as you study the terms he posts online. I definitely recommend this class. My favorite teacher so far.
chill class, he is funny, but u def want to go to class the second part of the semester, when he teaches the asian religions cause it gets confusing. nice to not have a book, he puts the words u need to know online.
Funny and entertaining lectures. No homework only tests in which you have to define the important terms for each religion. Terms are posted online and make sure you understand them well for the test. Don't really need to go to lectures just know the terms.. but you should go to class because its fun!
The best teacher so far with wonderful TA's who go above and beyond to help. It's just a shame that Lee is so far and few between when it comes to excellent lectures by professors. It is a good idea to really pay attention to the content of his lecture though because of his wonderful humor it is easy to miss the important content. Brilliant Man!
He is one of my favorite professor, he is funny and makes religion interesting. His T.A.s now changed the final to multiple chioce, fill in blanks, and a little bit of defining terms on your own. i don't know if they will keep it that way but i still recommend you taking him
Excellent teacher. Absolutely hilarious, and very, very smart. He makes religion interesting, and I quite enjoy it.
How has no one given this guy a chili pepper? I mean come on.
This professor is hilarious, and it seems like he isn't even trying. His lectures are interesting and he's a great professor for making religion interesting. His tests aren't bad, but the open ended writing stuff is kinda annoying. Overall though, if you're going to take Religion 150, take it from him.
Great teacher. Everything you need to know is written on the overhead. Makes it interesting and is super funny. Loved going to class and actually learned a lot.
Great class. Lee is super entertaining and honestly seems to want to give out good grades. It is easy to do well in this class and fun to attend.
The best professor I've had so far at UH. He's hilarious, makes religion interesting and taught me more in a semester about religion than I knew my whole life. Don't spend four years at this school without taking him!
Love this guy!
this guy is hilarious. makes the hour go by quickly. but with all of his stories he tends to get side tracked. but i recommend taking the class from him
Great Proffesor, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for a best selling book he wrote. Brilliant man, great class, and he even knows how to entertain while teaching! A+++ Class
Funniest guy eva supa gud class!
He's a super funny prof! But the tests were kind of a pain... Don't like so much memorizing and writing... If you study really hard you'll get a good grade. Unless you already know the terms for Buddhism and such! Then you're all set! No textbook because he couldn't find a good one :P
Hilarious! Very good class!
Only grades on midterm and final. Lectures are interesting, with music, videos, and funny stories to make it memorable. Super hard to not study and pass, so show up and take good notes! He'll definitely make you laugh. Great teacher who knows what he's teaching.
The only class i ENJOYED going to. But as hilarious and awesome as he is, your entire grade rides on only one midterm and one final, so if you're no good at testing this might be a bad choice for you. No homework, no reading, no textbook... kind of makes attendance a really good idea lol.
Lee Siegel is a rock star. While attendance isn't mandatory, his lectures are like story time for grown-ups, and he is thoroughly funny and entertaining. His exams are easy if you have gone to class and listened. No book to buy (save money!) and his lectures are a time in the day to sit back and listen to a story. Take him! You won't regret it.
Great teacher, funny and cool, easy grader
I LOVE Siegel! The most hilarious and enjoyable professor I have ever had! No textbooks and every class is like story time! Funniest professor in the world! Attendance isn't taken, but showing up to class and taking great notes is the only way you are going to pass this class. T.A's were fantastically helpful! Definitely recommend this class!!!!
Lee Siegel is the best professor I've had yet. He makes religion interesting. Attendance is not mandatory, but tests are based only on lectures. He gave our class a chili pepper, he deserves one too.
This is my second time taking a class with this professor, and I have to say, REL 208 with him is even better than 150. He was talking about how he stumbled on this site today in class and rated our class, even gave us a pepper. So Dr. Siegel, if you're reading, I loved your class and you once again prove you're the best professor ever.
Dr Siegel rocks! I looked forward to his class and to his stories. He presents the subject in an entertaining way which helps us to retain the material. It's been a real pleasure and I would definitely recommend his class. Mucho chili peppers to Lee Siegel!!
Prof Siegel is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had, he is hilarious, a genrous grader and knows his stuff, if you go to class and take good notes you will be just fine, Siegel's way of teaching is great and hi T.A's are alirght too! Definately recommend this class!!!
Awesome professor. Bravo on keeping everyone interested throughout the semester!
totally awesome and smokin hot!!! i love his ray bans and blazers dayummmm
this guy taught me how to herd sheep, fight sharks, and train elephants! he is the man.
Coolest Prof ever! the dude knows how to connect to the students. Loved the class. Loved his ways of teaching. I wish i could be just like him when i get older. Go go class...youll regret not hearing his lectures they are VERY funny and very easy to understand.
Lee is amazing! Fantastic prof. He tells stories that basically sum up the entire Bible, Quran, Torah, etc. and you can easily recall them later during the test. GO TO CLASS >> YOU WILL REGRET MISSING HIS LECTUURES. And take lots of notes!
Very knowledgable, but you are crammed with a lot, so its super important to go to class and study for the exams. He is all about essays for his exams. But guy is a character, I liked him as a teacher
Funny guy and he is super nice. Exams are pretty easy but his TAs grade them so your grade really depends on them and not Siegel himself. No books required and he tells a lot of interesting stories. Probably not the coolest Prof. to take a class from but definitly the best to take Religion with.
Took this class because I loved 150 - He is awesome!! So funny, yet brilliant man. He is very reasonable and respects his students. AWESOME PROF!!!!!
For some reason he reminds me of Dr. House...I guess it's the way he dresses and his humor. His lectures are him using an overhead and telling stories. Fairly easy and quite entertaining.
Great Religion prof. He is very entertaining teacher with his stories and jokes. But sometimes gets boring. He answers all questions very well in great detail. There is no textbook, and there are only 2 exams, a midterm and a final.
soooooFUNNY. like a stand up comedian everytime. well i only went to class three times but still got an A becuase all you need to do is go to his review day, class before the exam day, and he will go over everything u need to know. dont have any assignments or papers ever. great class to take for an easy A
Hilarious professor! Not only did he teach religion, but he taught us how to herd sheep, haha. Truth be told, lecture can get a bit boring sometimes, but he's incredibly knowledgeable and really nice! It's true, the lecture before an exam is a review of what will be on it, but his jokes and stories make it worth it to go to lecture.
Extremly entertaining and highly recomended. Hes like doctor House. lectures can be boring at times but here and there he'll throw in a entertaining story or joke. easy class, the review day before the exam is pretty much what you need, tells you everything thats on the test, BTW dont count on curves because every1 gets a high grade in that class.
Great teacher. He is definitely like Dr. House! You NEED to go to his classes. He doesnt take attendance but his exam reviews wont be very helpful if you dont atleast know what hes talking about. He makes it ineresting and youll enjoy the class! Just be sure to go to class
The most interesting professor I've had so far. Once, while taking a nap during his class I woke up laughing because I was still semi-aware of what he was saying. Definitely recommend him.
He is a very good Prof. favorite class I have ever taken!!! the class is interesting, he is eloquent and funny. The tests are hard, you have to go to every class if you want a good grade. I wish he taught another class because I enjoyed 150 so much!!!
Don't need any textbooks. ATTEND EVERY CLASS! Don't decide that you can skip class because his tests are all comprehension, not multiple choice. You really have to study and know your stuff. Go to class the day before exam day to get what is on the exam. All in all, ok class but its your responsibility to get the grade you want and #1 thing: STUDY!
He's really knowledgeable and actually pretty entertaining. You need to attend class since everything is from his lectures. Pretty easy. Worth to take since it's a required class anyway.
Tests are all free response questions and require a lot of comprehension. Go to quizlet.com and search esther_yi. I made some notecards for the final i had to take this past semester. Its all the terms we had to know. His midterms/finals are all non cumulative.VERY funny. His curve for our midterm was ridiculous everyone clapped when he announced it.
Amazing professor. I highly recommend him to anyone even mildly interested in religion. He is very funny and very knowledgable. He gives two tests (essentially just vocal), and both are easy if you study for them and come to class to hear his stories and definitions of certain words. My only complaint is that he isn't very nice one-on-one.
Easy class IF you show up and take notes (but attendance isn't mandatory). He just talks and tells stories all class, puts up some picture slides, you take notes on them, and then on the exams (2, both short answer) you just repeat what he's talked about. Class can be entertaining but can often go off topic. Overall, easy if you take notes.
Lee is an extremely entertaining professor who is very knowledgable in his field. Go to class everyday, it helps greatly with exams and he always makes you laugh. Exams ARE HARD, but if you study and go to class you should be fine. Generous curve.
I think I learned more about him than I learned about religion, but that's alright. I failed the first exam because I didn't understand what was going to be on it, but aced the next one to bring my average to a B. He doesn't have a textbook, but I borrowed one from a friend who had a different professor and that helped to study.
Cool dude, but his class is challenging. He talks about himself and Judaism a lot. No textbook, so it makes things a bit more difficult. To be frank, I don't think I knew anyone who got an A in his class. Interesting class though, but my friends recommend taking the other guy instead.
He does off a textbook "Religions of the World" as a reference for his class, otherwise it is a lecture. You must attend, take copious notes, ask question, and show interest in his class. I re-wrote my notes into a definition format as a study guide prior to the exams, and aced both tests. He is an excellent professor and reccomend his class.
No textbook needed. He talks about three different religions for each part of the semester (2 parts). 2 exams (mid/final) non cumulative, short answer. Prior to the exam he goes over what will be on it. Attend all classes because he does not review terms or concepts in depth.
Horrible speaker, so sit close. Just attend class and pay attention and you'll ACE it! You DONT even have to be smart, he probably could teach middle school kids if his humor wasn't so inappropriate. The hard part: his lectures always have a lot of rambling causing you to drift from paying attention. Also, point system is small so watch out
AWESOME!!!! must have man..must have!!
He is the easiest teacher at UHM. He changed his course this year to make it easier for students. We had 5 quizzes, all with 5 pictures of what he talked about and you simply explain what they are! (Middle schoolers could do this) His dirty jokes are pretty funny too. Take him for sure!
The funnest class I took for my first semester. The info was interesting and Siegel is pretty funny. The course is extremely easy if you go to class. He talks about the stories associated with a religion along with a powerpoint of slides. For the test, he'll choose 5 of the slides and you have to write a couple of sentences about them. Easy Peasy.
Same guidelines as other posters have said (quizzes with 5 slides). Just because people say it's an easy class DON'T take it lightly and skip class. Pay attention and go to class and you should get an A. Altogether good entertaining professor with inappropriate humor at times.
Great dude, smooth class, real smooth.
MUST TAKE. You won't go through the course without hearing the phrase "Hiphip hurray, let's PARTY" I guarantee it. You need to go to class everyday b/c the quizzes are all pictures that are shown in lectures, and make sure to pay attention! He sometimes goes off topic but his stories are enjoyable. A middle-schooler could NOT take this course haha
Really cool guy. His stories are always amusing and class is overall interesting. The only problem is that the class can drag at times but I would still recommend him.
Straight up comedian if you actually listen. definitely deserves the chile pepper. definitely.
Was a very cool professor. Quizzes are 5 pictures. You write a description about it. Must pay attention and take good notes during lectures in order to pass. Listening is key because he doesn't really write anything down so you have to write what you hear. Attendance mandatory only because the quizzes are based on pictures shown during lecture.
