Took the lab section with Prof. Vogel. Very excitable teacher who definitely knows his stuff. He is willing to help always, but can be a little slow in responding to e-mails and phone messages. Other than that I would definitely take Lee's class again.
This teacher is awesome! He is a great lab instructor! When he taught us things that we have gone over in lecture by other teachers, it is 100 times more clear coming from him. I wish I would've taken him for my lecture as well! He is the bomb!
I absolutely LOVE this instructor! I have learned so much in his class. He does go a little fast & skims over stuff at times, but bring a recorder & read over the online notes & you should be ok. Good when it comes to student challenges regarding quize/exam q's. He'll adjust scores in your favor if he feels it's warranted. Wish I had him for lab!!
I'm grateful to have been in Dr. Vogel's lab this semester... he really knows biology and is VERY helpful. He will go the extra mile to help, if you just ask. I would take him again in a heartbeat. :- )
Dr. Vogel can be a bit brisk, but overall, I think he's a good instructor. I only had him for lab, and found him to be a bit snippy with students' questions but usually helpful and very clear in explaining concepts. The key to his lab is to be prepared, review the previous and current weeks' quizzes, be on time, and PARTICIPATE!
He is a really smart man and very nice, but he needs to teach at a student level.
i took his lab, man did i like him more than my instructor. very helpful to students. i wish i had him for lecture. it sucked that i had to drop out his lab due to my lecture instructor, who was horrible. but definitely taking his lab and hopefully class next semester. ROCK ON VOGEL!
This professor is very knowledgeable in the subject, always willing to work with students, not condescending with his educational background, and kinda cute in an intellectual way.
the "Doc" is a great guy, he makes the lab easy and fun! i like the way he presents the concepts, it makes you get it right away.
Dr.Vogel does not know how to teach at a students level. He goes by the book for his lectures but the tests are on 4 chapters and 60 questions. He rushes thru the chapters so he can syay with his syllabus content and does not liked to be asked questions. No review for any tests. I had him for lecture.Over half the class failed all his tests
Dr. Vogel is a very good professor and a really nice guy. He explains concepts clearly, and if you still can't grasp an idea, he'll give you one on one attention. Even stays after class to help. I HIGHLY recommend this professor!! (I wish I could take him again!)
Dr. Lee Vogel is a very god teaher, i understand all of his lecture classes, and he is vey helpful to students who ask him for help. His exams are a little hard but if you take notes from his lectures and you ask for help on anything you dont understand, you will recieve a good grade. I took Joshua Parker last semester and this guy is Harder, Very!

He knows what he's talking about but he does not know how to explain things clearly to his students. He speaks to his students like they are his peers instead of students.
Prof. Vogel is a fairly good teacher. You have to work hard for the grade you want. Sit up front if possible, the closer to the front, less distractions and you can hear him better. He tries to help explain things to you, but sometimes makes you feel like an idiot. Study hard! Good luck.
he's a very hard teacher. his tests were hard and tricky. he spoke to his students like we all had our phd like him. he made me feel like he didnt care if i passed or failed. i transfered out of his class and got a teacher that was more helpful and understanding.
talks down to students a bit...but then again most of the students were pretty clueless. VERY good class and well tought. NOT dumbed down.
Overall great. I feel like I got more from his class than just a grade and regardless of other, perhaps, "easier" teachers I would still highly recommend him...if you're willing to work.
This class is hard.His grading is hard & so are his tests, they are very tricky.Read the chapter before getting into lecture, it'll be less confusing.He knows his stuff, but he's not the best at teaching it.Fill in the blank questions are usually from hand outs given in class.If you visit his office, then he'll be more helpful.Class goes very fast.
Pathetic! this guy seriously needs to tone it down for a non-major class. Taking his class was the biggest mistake ever! He really doesn't respect students and talks to you as if he doesn't want to be there. Tricks students on tests and instead of helping them, he makes them cry. If you value your GPA do NOT take his class!
Very difficult class taken over 4 weeks in summer. The issue is the way he writes the tests. Each question tests multiple concepts so you have to be intimately familiar with the information and able to disprove the incorrect answers, not simply pick the correct one. No one in the class got an A. One person in 20+ got a B. This says something..
This teacher outlines what you need to know, then expects you to find all other info in the text.His tests are somewhat tricky, he gives points back to the class if everyone misses certain questions.His tests are multiple choice, short answer, and labeling diagragms.He tries to help as much as he can and grades fairly if u do your part. hes not eas
His explanation of the material is great and encourages questions during lab. He is helpful and well-organized. There is a quiz every wk, unless it's online. Labs are all online and he posts grades in a timely manner. The material is not easy, so study. He doesn't like people that don't come to class to learn so be interested! He's great. Take him!
study powerpoints, hand outs for test. Some quiz questions are on test. Go to office hours or at least look at your mistakes on test. I don't know how people fail this class, everything is given to you. ALSO IF YOU DON"T UNDERSTAND A CONCEPT THERE ARE VIDEOS IN THE LAB SECTION THAT WILL EXPLAIN for the most part. good luck
Biology 189 is difficult enough and Lee Vogel taught lab as if every student had just took science courses before. He would encourage questions, then add that before he answered we should all have taken the material before in a (ex- genetics) class, etc. If you are looking for someone to break down concepts for you, do not take Vogel.
I thought Vogel was a tough teacher. His tests are hard, he gives you a study guide but it doesnt always include everything that will be on the test. His lectures did not keep me interesting. I would not recommend him!
Vogel is a good teacher, but hard. He gives all the tools necessary, (i.e. handouts, powerpoint all available online for view at home) to pass this class. Do not take him if you are lazy. Final is cumulative so you have to learn all the info throughout the semester and retain it in order to pass class. Cramming will not work!

He does contradict the text book a lot so do not take his class if you want to learn out of text. He is very helpful if you make an attempt, but blunt. If you want to pass this c lass DO NOT take Vogel. Out of 45 students, 8 passed. Doesn't like answering questions and is very hard. Condesending and also Full of himself. Save your money and take someone else.
Very difficult professor to understand. I went to his office a few times and stayed after class to ask questions and left feeling more confused than ever! I expected this class to be hard, but not this hard. I would not recommend him!!!

He makes this lab way harder then it should be, all his quizzes compared to other teachers are sooooo hard, all my friends got A's in lab where i was getting a c borderline d!! when i was getting an A in lecture!! hes full of himself and puts you on the spot in front of everyone even if you don't know the answer.

Listen, this is a hard class and it's not H.S. so buck up. You have to study way more than you think, but he is very helpful if you email him or see him during office hours. His tests are pretty much based off of his power points, so print them up. He is a big fan of Angel, so be sure to check on there for anything new he has posted.

I do not recommend this teacher- at all!!!!!!!!!! You remain confused b/c he''ll so only go by my notes dont read too much into the book- the tests are impossible - classs average was 72%- your destined to practically fail w/ him- he should not teach a 100 level course at all- very arrogant and intimidating- save yourself a wasted semester-
Very hard class. You have to be able to apply what he has taught you and not just remember the material. Tests are hard and they go into more detail than he taught so you really have to study out of class. Unless Biology comes easy to you I would not take his class.
Tough course, especially when taught by this professor. Many people who bought the textbook did poorly in there. This course is passable without one. Just stick with the notes, look over each exam with the professor during his office hours because his final exam is cumulative.
This professor is very condescending and will speak down to you. If you do not understand and/or have questions, he tells you how ignorant His questions on tests and quizzes are vague and confusing. He expects you to know answers that were never discussed in class or in the book. He contradicts the book but take and make questions from the book.
Mr. Vogel is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He is extremely condescending. He doesn't teach. He makes students feel stupid for not already knowing what they are there to learn. He says everything should be 'intuitive'. Absolutely the worst. Student Beware!
What everyone else are saying is true. Don't take Dr. Vogel unless you want to learn 100 biology class on a Ph.D level and actually intend on passing.
Be prepared to have "prior knowledge" as he firmly believes in the student understanding the course before you complete it. Also, good luck interpreting and comprehending his test and quiz questions. If you can, you deserve public recognition.
I have found Mr. Vogel to be a very fair teacher. He only tests us on information we have covered in lecture and/or lab. I have read many of the other posts here, and find most of it to be untrue, or at least, not my experience. It is a hard class, but I have not only learned a lot about Biology, but also honed my study skills.
Dr. Vogel is a great instructor. His class is somewhat hard. You really have to study. He doesn't use the text book in class, but he does tell you when to refer to them. He gives a very informative lecture and power points to go along with them. I think the negative comments are from students that didn't study and failed his class. Great Professor!
Dr. Vogel is a great teacher who preps you for university level classes. Be prepared to study! This is a health sciences prereq- it's not supposed to be a cake walk! print power point material. He WILL tell you when to reference your book for material and what to emphasize on for tests so pay attention! Excellent help when seen during office hours.
Dr. Vogel is a great professor. Yes...the class is difficult; however, if, someday, you want to be able to work in the medical field, and inject patients with needles, etc. aka...save lives...then you better be able to pass this class. Dr. Vogel works hard to convey the necessary info, but expects the same from you. Study, be involved, show up!
Be prepared to study alot. When they say that you should be studying 15-20 hours a week, theyre' not kidding. I found him very helpful. Take advantage of the lab that comes with the book. I found that extremely helpful in understanding challenging concepts. Good Luck!
i had him for my lab section and i can honestly say that i learned more from him than i did from my lecture instructor. he was very thorough and knowledgeable. if you attend every lab and study all of the material from the lab notebook, you will get an a.
Great professor. He made pretty boring labs as interesting as possible. When he spoke, you can tell that he is an expert about biology. Be sure to be prepared for lab and study for all the quizzes.
Dr.Vogel is very smart but he can be a little condescending. Make sure you attend every lab, most of his quiz ?'s are based off the previous week's lecture. Also, be sure you read the upcoming weeks lab as he almost always includes a ? on that. As long as you attend lab every week and take notes you'll pass.
I had this professor for lab & lecture and got an A in both. It is possible! If I wasn't 100% clear on something in lecture, I could hear it again, re-explained in lab. Attend every lab and you should pass the quizzes with no problem. For lecture, rewrite your notes before the tests and review any concepts that are foggy! Flashcards are helpful!
TERRIBLE TEACHER!!! This class is hard enough without having the professor intentionally make it harder. I would be embarrassed if I taught a class and only 30% of my students passed. He has issues!!! Save your GPA and take a different professor.
I was reading a few of the other comments and have to agree that he is condescending. However, he is very thorough. His quizzes are a little tough, but if you study you should be ok. I would try to get a dif Professor. Try to get Wainscott; you will not be disappointed.
This teacher is just awful. he's very snide and condescending which isn't useful in this type of LEARNING environment. it doesn't help to feel self conscious in a place when you're trying to not only learn new material, but DIFFICULT material and this teacher is not helpful. Take professor Wainscott. He's tough but fair and is always very nice.
I had Vogel as my biology lab professor and yes, he can be condescending but his quizzes was really straightforward. If you study beforehand than you will have no problem in getting a good grade. I really enjoyed his quizzes, he leaves out the tedious things to do. Hah
Hated this professor at the beginning of the semester. But he grows on you. He lightens up as the class progresses...really pay attention and study (USE the text) and you will do fine. If you don't grasp the concepts right out the gate, don't wait to get tutoring or you will fall too far behind. Good Luck
The trouble people have with Vogel is that he expects you to do your own legwork. He said point blank that the course is too intensive for him to hold our hands all the way through. He'll guide us to the info and help us to understand it but it is up to us to learn it. I loved his class, but if you're just after an easy A then Vogel is not for you.

His board notes are all over the place, unorganized...in order to take notes you must remember his whole sentence and write it, if not you look to see what he wrote down and it's scribbles and incomplete words with dots and arrows! Dropped this class...first ever! "A" doesn't exist for your future grade...but failing and lowering your GPA are most likely...as he tells you day 1...he starts with 45 students and ends with 20 or so....I shouldve listened to that and walked out immediately!
Although professor Vogel knows what he is talking about when it comes to biology, he fails to realize that not everyone has the same level of education as he does. He is very pompous in the way that he speaks. He does not help in any sort of way and he is very unorganized when it comes to his way of teaching.

Very smart man but treats students like colleagues. Is vague and somewhat condescending when teaching. He contradicts the book often, saying that the book is wrong and he is right, leaving the reading that you have done useless. He is very confusing and doesn't ever actually answer questions. Definitely don't recommend. My class pass rate: ~5/50
His class is super hard. No wonder a lot of people dropped this class. There are only 28 people in my lecture, and there were about 47 in the beginning of this semester! His tests are extremely difficult. He does have study guides, but they have nothing to do with the tests!!! It's a BIG waste of time to even study from it if they're not on tests

Very difficult class. The first two tests are definitely the hardest - he actually eases up on the last two tests after half of the students drop the class. My best advice: print out the PowerPoints prior to lecture and only study the notes. I got a B without opening my textbook once. Good luck!
First two tests are key two your success, study your notes, read & make notes from your book and be sure to go over the power points. The quizzes will be difficult but only account for 8% of grade. Be sure to study handouts for short answers on tests. I found if I studied 1 more day like I did the day before and of the test, they wouldve been easy.

Terrible teacher. I'm a straight A student, but in his class it certainly isn't the case! Thank God I only have him for lab. Tests are hard and he's a hard grader. And yes he's condescending and all that. Never answers questions directly, instead backfires questions at you, in the end you are left with no answer, even more confused! Hate his class!

Vogel is a good teacher. After taking his class you will definitely be prepared to take the teas exam and other bio classes that follows 189. The first test is extremely hard but if you study hard then the rest of the tests are easy. If he sees that you work hard for his class he will definitely be willing to help you more.
He's a good teacher but he doesn't really help you out. When you do ask him for help, he looks at you and expects for you to already know the answer. He's always nice though!

Avoid this instructed at all costs! I read the reviews but I was motivated, ready to work hard and attend every session. You will find yourself eating, breathing, sleeping biology in hopes of passing only to fail the tests and quizzes. 65% of his students will fail and drop whichever comes first and it won't phase him either. No help from him!
Overall he is a good teacher. He explained the labs well and reviewed for the quiz before each class. Pre reading the lab is very important, he expects you to know what your doing before class and tests you on it.

this class is no where easy and you will without a doubt work extra hard for a passing grade. Altough he doesnt go by the book much i used it as a base. He is tough his test are insane as to the level in which needed to come up with an answer. If your taking him its not impossible to pass but go in knowing he is about unobvious detail!!! Good luck

If you want to get a good grade you'll have to eat and breathe biology, not a good instructor for someone who is working and studying full time, he is confusing and his test are way to hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Great professor. He does expect some work to be done by students, but fair. He tries his hardest to help out as best as possible and toward the end of the semester he REALLY tries HARD to help the students boost their grades. I took him for both Lab and Lecture and he really is outstanding. The later on in the semester, the more you appreciate him.
Although I passed with a B, the majority of the class failed, only one person received an A. This teacher expects you to study with the book as well as power-points and know biology terminology in order to receive an A in the class. If anything you will learn good study habits and earn the grade you deserve. The final is difficult as well.
I didn't have him for lecture, but I thought he was a really good lab prof. He reviews the test before and gives you the answers after. Definitely read the lab before and you should be fine.
I truly enjoyed Professor Vogel's class. His lectures are very clear and he tries to explain all concepts very thoroughly, even if it is difficult for him to. Biology 189 is a very difficult class but he provides numerous online resources to help you pass. The tests are hard, but that should be expected by those who enroll in this class.
This class was TOUGH, and I'm a 4.0 student. Dr. Vogel wants you to completely understand each concept, not just memorize. His tests are HARD, REALLY HARD and they make up the majority of your grade, but he is MORE THAN willing to help you! I studied 3-4X a week for about 5 hours and I'm at a C right now.. Go to tutoring and his office hours!
You can do it and he will help you! He answers questions, provides power points, 12 quizzes, 4 tests, and a final. As a full time manager with three dogs, a house to maintain, a wedding to plan, and too many big greek family dinners I got to studied for about 4 hours total a week and will receive a B. You get what you give and work to get.
As long as you study on your own, as well as what's in the book, you will do fine in this class. Professor Vogel uses Canvas for EVERYTHING, so you better learn the ropes on Canvas. You will need to study on your own, which I found You Tube helpful to break things down in layman's terms. All in all Professor Vogel is very fair in grading.
this teacher is beyond hard. test are even harder. they are worded all weird and he doesnt even give back our test to help study we just have to go back to his office see the test and thats it. weird. hes not very clear about the subjects and whenever we ask questions he goes off to another subject. this is isnt the best teacher. dont take.
Don't take this class
I took him for both lab and lecture and he seems nice and calming but at times somewhat intimidating only because he is very intellectual and sometimes makes you look dumb when you don't know the answer. He grades very critical on tests and quizzes. Prepare to study and read the chapters beforehand coming to class for both lecture and lab.
Dr. Vogel is incredibly smart and he is a great instructor. If you are able to pay attention through the lecture and lab, he gives you the answers for the exams he gives. I have learned a lot for him and if you are serious about continuing on in the medical or science fields, please take him. He doesn't want memorization, he wants us to understand.
Lee Vogel is smart, funny, and straight to the point. He has a lot of resources on canvas to assist your studying. He synthesizes the most important information from each chapter he goes over and only tests you on the material he either lectures over or mentions to look over. Just retain the info from the lectures.
His lectures are hard to understand, they arent very clear. I always had to ask him questions after class. But he was very willing to answer, and appreciated the question. Approachable. I would take his Lab again.
Took him for Lab and it was horrible. I knew the information, but the way he words things confuses the hell out of everyone. He is also quite rude. I once threw away a toothpick and he made me dig through the trash to dispose of it in the biohazard disposal. DO NOT TAKE VOGEL.

You can study all of the content he teaches during lecture for hours and feel confident about the content but it's a completely different language on the tests. The way he words things in the test are COMPLETELY different than what he teaches in class. He uses a lot of trick questions. Do not take him, You will regret it like it did!

I do think it's important to understand concepts more than just memorization when you're in college, but he takes it a bit too far. Maybe he should teach only higher levels of science and it would be a better match for him.
He expect you to know everything about Biology, he combines chemistry when it is not need . He say certain things are not important but it will be on the test which makes it difficult for the students to study also, not specific about what to study for exams. his exams are VERY VERY hard!! . I took Vogel for Lab in the Fall of 16. Simply put, he's great. He does push his students, and he expects you to arrive at lab prepared; that's not too much to ask. I walked in knowing very little and walked out gaining a ton of knowledge. Take him if you are vested in your education, if you want to walk through this course while asleep-don't.

Okay, so here is the thing - you want to be a NURSE! What I am telling you from the future this the right guy for you. I have read the reviews and I hated the him more than any of you. But, guess what... Now every time I see him, I thank him. I am striving, while others drown. Why because they took 189 easy and now can not cut Nursing School.
Focus on content from lecture, the text is good for review of that content. Don't spend a lot of time on everything in the chapter that you are on. Test are based on Lecture info
If he is your only option for a bio teacher, DO NOT take him!! he makes the material so hard, the tests impossible and goes on rants about topics that are not relevant to the class at all. He doesn't explain things very well. He lectures like he expects you to know things and when you ask a question he'll look at you subtly like you're stupid for asking it. He doesn't like repeating himself and he's terrible at explaining things clearly. I had to repeat that because its true. Many people drop out of his class after a month.
He is not hard but I think students got used to get an easy A. I see that some high GPA. If you get this GPA without studying, this is just nothing. English is my second language I got a B this class. If I did it, every person can do it. Just study and you will say 'thank you Mr. Vogel' when you take Micro and Chem.
NOT AN EASY A. Honestly a great into to Biology classes, you have to study. He doesn't take attendance but if you don't go to class the tests will be very hard for you. I hated him at first but he became one of my most liked teachers. Stick it out and put in the effort and you will come out with the knowledge you need! No busy work doesn't hurt!
Prof Vogel wasn't my favorite but he's not too bad. He tends to talk down to his students and makes you feel stupid if you answer a question wrong during lecture. I still got an A+ because he goes over the WHOLE quiz right before you begin so it's kinda hard to really fail his class. He was nice and helpful if you ask questions after class.
A pure challenge. I found myself reinventing the way I study b/c the specifics of what is important to this Professor is in the details of BIO189. First I want to say.. find yourself a back up book that is very detailed, it'll help. The powerpoints will show you what is important. Dates get cancelled/change, so it is best that you are in attendance

Not as bad as the comments say. The tests are lecture based. As long as you make sure you understand the concept and are able to apply it to different situations, you'll do just fine. Memorization will not get you anywhere in this class. He may sound a little harsh when explaining something but I'm pretty sure he doesn't do it on purpose.
Professor Vogel, I felt, was too harsh on his students. First day of class he stated that half the class would either drop out by midterm or average at a C grade or below. He sounded almost prideful when he mentioned that more than half the class was failing during midterm. Wasn't a good learning environment for me, so unfortunately I dropped out.
He's the worst professor I have had. His lectures and tests don't always align. He adds material from the weeks lab to his lecture tests; I didn't get the lab studies until later in the week. He has a very low pass rate, more students fail than pass. Is also condescending. I love biology and was extremely disappointed in this professor.
Lee Vogel is a professor I would suggest not taking. I ended up enrolling for his class because it was the last option but please take this as your warning. I've retaken Biology 189 and it does not come close to his way of teaching. Most of the material he goes over isn't close to what's on the test. And his homework assignments are not helpful.
Professor Vogel is a tough teacher. He is a great person and means well. Heavy reading, must learn the materials provided & attend his lectures. You will NEED to understand the topics/content from many different angles (using examples, definition, function, structure) that's the only way you will pass his class. Which has only helped me!
Avoid this instructor at all costs. I think he thinks we are scientists sitting in these seats. The language he uses in his lectures and tests are very confusing he might as well be speaking in pig latin. More than half of my class failed his class. Doesn't really teach, just lectures, expects you to comprehend by yourself and just read the book
If you absolutely have to take him like I did because he was the only option, here's what you do: RECORD HIS LECTURES, TAKE ALL NOTES HE WRITES ON THE BOARD, UTILIZE HIS POWERPOINTS (even though he doesn't use them), & MAKE FLASHCARDS. Beware of him tricking you on ALL exams and REALLY STUDY. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! DON'T BE AFRAID NOR ASHAMED.

By far the worst professor I have ever taken. I'm not one to blame a professor, but he is the reason I withdrew from the class. His lectures are so confusing and he goes on these long tangents about something and then says "you don't need to know that though." The majority the class failed his test and he stated that "it was normal." TERRIBLE PROF
The way he teaches is confusing only because what he says isnt on the test . He is very tricky with his test questions and into detail about the subject. He doesnt like when you ask a question from previous chapters. He talks at you like a Biology scholar & not a student that doesnt know the stuff . Most of my class got Fs on the test .
He's okay but his wording makes everything harder. The practice tests don't help with the actual tests. His wording of the questions makes it difficult to get them right. He makes you work really hard for the grade that you want. Don't recommend
Since the COVID 19 pandemic started we switched to remote distance. It was very difficult and lots of homework to instill the concepts have been understood. His study guides were useless and same with the practice test. I did heavy reading and practice test on the My Lab and Mastering but his test were extremely difficult. He needs a SI tutor.
Professor Vogel is nice, he just doesnt take much time to explain things. He is very patronizing when it comes to students not being able to understand the chemistry related math in this entry level biology course. He makes comments that we should have learned this in grade school. Not helpful. Rushes through lab. Condescending. Unfortunate.
I tried so hard in this class and still got a C. Professor puts you down when you ask questions in class. Puts you on blast and makes you feel dumb for trying. I would recommend taking another teacher that can teach well and not look down on students!
If you can, don't take this class. Unless you are a genius and are a mind reader, don't take this class. None of his test go with the instructed lectures from that week and are extremely hard. He expects you to fully understand a concept and then apply it immediately without giving you a chance to ask questions about it. I could rant for days.
If enrolling late/ have to take this course, pls find a dif prof/ take Biol95. You'll have to settle w/ a grade that is a C/lower. Hell tell you during the 1st lecture that most of the class wont pass w/ a B/higher. You cant rely on memorization, its all reading. Youre on your own. He means well, but will make you feel dumb. Lectures are 3-4 chaps ahead of lab. Youll basically learn 1 chap a lecture & every quiz is weekly & 2 chapters. You. Have. To. Read. Tests are nothing like quizzes/ practice tests so look ahead in the lab manual. If you have to take this class, work ahead & rely on YouTube videos to learn. You have to teach yourself. Lectures?s but is unhelpful.
Youre paying to teach yourself and to be self conscious. Hes a cool lab teacher though. Lab > lecture !
One thing I can say about Mr. Vogel is yes he is very SMART. A lot of things I can say about this Instructor is he grades really hard , he has a nonchalant attitude , he's not very helpful when it comes to review for big tests , when he writes down notes on the board they are very short worded. I will not take his class ever again.
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS!THINKS EACH STUDENT IS A BIO MAJOR FROM THE JUMP! His lectures have nothing to do with tests. I got 90%+ on all assignments & quizzes, & got 50-60% on tests b/c I would have to guess for 1/2. He is terrible when you ask for help! Very rude! Only 12 students remained out of 42 initially. Don't take him, for your sake!
Biology 189 is a challenging class!! The majority of people taking this class are doing so because they want to be accepted into a health & science program, so with that being said, Professor Vogel is a "no nonsense" teacher and he will prepare you for your future science courses. You have to want to learn! Thank you Prof Vogel, I now love biology
I had Professor Vogel in both lecture and lab. He is a tough grader and write stuff down fast on the board and deletes it before you have time to take notes. All the semester he was talking about a grade curve at the end of it, but it was just talk, I would have passed the class with it. Be prepared to study hard and his test are very tough.
Professor Vogel wants you to succeed but he isn't going to make it easy. He wants you to learn and retain the information you need to succeed in your future careers. He may come off rough around the edges to the students who don't want to put in the work & come to class unprepared. Read ahead, put in the time outside of class and you will do well.
I took his class a long time ago and never got to put a review. Please never take his class. He would laugh at me when I got something wrong, made me tear up when he was clearly trying to interrogate me. He purposely acted like this and flaunted that most of his students drop. I tried so hard I was struggling but he was always so rude and hurtful.
I really enjoyed this lab, everything covered on the quizzes was covered in the lab before. Read your lab manual before class, you have to understand lectures to do well in this class. He is a little hard to hear, but overall I really liked him.

I took Professor Vogel, and did not succeed as much as I thought I would, lectures were unorganized and notes/powerpoints were not very helpful and test were difficult. However he did provide a few opportunities to improve grade.

Professor Vogel is a tough but fair teacher. He definitely wants his students to succeed but you have to put in the work in his class. He covers all of the material on his tests during lecture so it is wise to attend every one. Taking his class made me a better student and I feel adequately prepared for BIO 223.
Had Dr. Vogel for lab. He expects you to read and understand the info from lecture and your lab manual, so if you take the time to do that you'll succeed. Lab was fairly easy, and hes ready to answer any questions you have. He cares about you understanding the practical applications of what you're learning. Great professor.
After I read all his reviews I still went with him. That was the worst mistake I've ever made. He made everything so hard and his exams are crazy unless you are a really smart one. He expected you to know everything. Half of his class fail. Make sure you prepare for his class or pick another professor for your sake.
The quiz at the start of each lab is just a refresher of your lecture classes. Sometimes, he leaves bonus questions at the end, regarding the lab of the week to see if you actually come prepared for the lab. He may seem pedantic to some, but that is science for you, where accuracy and precision is key. I met my crush in here lol.
Dr. Vogel's class was hard. Don't try to copy everything he writes on the board down. It's better to try to understand the concepts instead. Make sure to ask Dr. Vogel questions in class or see him during office hours. And make sure to read the textbook! I wouldn't take his class again, because he's a hard grader, but he was nice imo.
