Good teacher, best out of the core. Go to his office hours and he'll help you out.
All you core students got sooo lucky. I hear this guy is way easier than Beyer was. You have no clue how hard the core was with him. works out well for you though. You better thank god beyer left NIU, or you'd be out another 50 hours a week for studying, because it used to be the hardest core class. dang, lucky!
okay class, not a lot of points, funny guy
His lectures are boring way too boring, his tests are tricky (he is looking for chances to trick you). He likes teasing people, sometimes to the point that you feel stupid. I don't think I could take an other class with him.
Best of the core courses...Very hard get an A but you have to be an idiot to fail this course too. The materials are easy to understand and he takes time for studetns to learn the material...Most productive course than other finance core courses.
funny guy, tough but fair
You will really learn from his class. Moorman is a better candidate for this class. But Dr. Zhou is really fair. Very interesting class!
Great teacher. Will learn a lot, just go to class and study for tests. The tests aren't that hard, just look for ways he might try and trick you, if you know your stuff you'll be fine.
Dr. Zhou is smart, friendly, and a great lecturer. Awesome guy - takes time to learn his students names. Slight accent. Funny. Take 460 - You will learn Fixed Incomes inside and out. Midterm 30%; Final 44% w/HW, quizzes, cases, and excel projects. Not impossible 400-level class. Book optional IMO. Other Seniors agree - Zhou's 460 is worth taking.
Dr. Zhou is a good professor. He is very engaging and makes a strong effort to ensure that you understand the material. If you don't do well, it is because you don't care. Study and you will be fine.
Dr. Zhou is a great professor and has a really good sense of humor. He is pretty flexible on grading if you go to his office hours. The class is pretty difficult with hard homework, pop quizzes and the exams are pretty tricky. Overall I'd recommend it, you learn a lot.
Although he is a really good professor, and has a great sense of humor... This class is not easy! It's the first class that I have not passed in all 4 years at NIU. Make sure you have interest in the subject and know what you're doing. Good luck!
Very smart guy. Funny and easy going. Go to class and office hours and you'll be fine. You will learn a lot of stuff. Good luck.
Hardest class in the Finance department but great guy. You will enjoy his class equally as much the second time as you did the first :-)
At the end of the class, you will feel like you know debt instruments(because you really do). He is very funny and a good teacher. His class definitely increased my enthusiasm for debt securities. Also, we had to use our minds and think creatively about some examples and articles he brought. Second hardest class in 400 FINA with few As.
First time teaching the class in Sping 2013. Nice enough guy, does like to joke about how much smarter Chinese students are. Class only has 250 points so EVERYTHING is needed to get an A. Extra credit is given to anyone who spots a mistake or is willing to work a problem. Four points max. Really. Four.
A nice enough guy but probably not in the right profession. Entire grade is essentially based off of two exams. He expects you to remember everything from UBUS 310 and puts all sorts of tricks and curveballs on tests. Gives very little practice for exams because he thinks students learn by going through one example and deriving formulas.
I thought thar Dr . Zhou did a good job teaching this class despite the short 6 week time table. He was always willing to help students out when they had questions. My only point of criticism would be that he needs to brush up on his attention to detail when it comes to writing questions for the reviews and tests.
6 pop quizzes, 3 exams, Excel project, 4 homework sets. Lectures are packed with information, and he rambles a lot about his topics. Sometimes it's hard to understand what he says, so study on your own. He gives one example, on average, for each computation topic. He doesn't prepare you enough for the exams.
I took finance Grad-class 607 as prerequisite, as I was referred from another student that he was a great professor... However, that was not the case... His lectures were very boring / non-intuitive... He gave only 2- exams which were very hard with no-extra ? Bottom line half the class received Cs or lower... I highly don't recommend him...
Not a very organized professor. Rambles in lectures and then speeds through examples of calculations (which are what's tested on exams) when he realizes we're almost out of time. Study guides provided do not prepare you well for exams. He even admits his exams and meant to trick you rather than to test understanding of the subject.
Awful professor. Admits he tries to trick you on quizzes. Randomly picks two problems on the homework to grade so if you miss those two problems and get the rest correct, congrats you just got a 2/10 for completion. Entire course is 300 points with a 120 point final so goodluck. Avoid this guy if you can.
Worst professor I have ever taken. He flies through lectures, only grades 2 questions on the homework. Quizzes are open note but over 70% of the class gets a C or lower. Cumulative final that is worth 120 points out of the 300 total points for the course. This class is required for all business majors. Find another professor. AVOID professor Zhou.
Dr. Zhou is awesome and if you're failing his class then you're not trying hard enough. There are plenty of ways to succeed in his class and even though the topic is difficult, he does a very good job of explaining it. 10/10 would take again.
Dr. Zhou is a really good professor. He is willing to help students with understanding the material and he gives out extra points in class for participating. Students who do not pass this class are the ones who do not read the book or take advantage of the resources at the end of the book chapter or on blackboard. This class is an easy A.
The quizzes are extremely difficult, the homework is long and nothing like the quizzes. The lectures are boring and he rambles on without explaining. Be prepared to read the book and his slides because you wont understand his lectures. You'll hate this class even more the second time you take it
Dr. Zhou is actually pretty good. His lectures are significantly better than the book. If you rely on the book, you'll never pass. I'm in an MBA 8 week section for FINA 320 and it's next to impossible. The quizzes don't reflect the homework, which doesn't reflect the examples in his lectures or book. I work full time, and there's basically no hope.
Stay away from Zhou. Takes his class & job WAY too seriously. It's a PRINCIPLES CLASS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Assigns these extremely long homeworks, picks 2 questions to grade. That's right, 2. Quizzes are nothing like the lectures or homeworks. Final exam? Oh yeah, it's worth almost half of ur grade. NIU, what ru doing? U really messed up w/ this 1.
MOST of what's on quiz/exams isn't even taught. He tries to throw you for a loop and also expects you to catch his mistakes. Only grades 2/10 questions on hwk. If you spend hours and get those wrong you basically fail. Final is worth a great part of your grade. You never know where you stand in this class. He forgot this is an INTRO class.
Awful
Very indifferent to student's condition. Grading two questions is arbitrary. He does not want to do this course but do we have to suffer for that?
WORST TEACHER EVER! He does not care about his students (60% of class failing). Quizzes are nothing like what is taught in class. Hard to understand because of accent. Final is worth almost half of your grade (120 out of 300 points). Not a good look for NIU.
Unless you already have a good Finance base do NOT take this professor. He may have the knowledge but he barely gives extra credit and makes grading tough. 40% of your grade is final. He gives 20+ questions for homework but randomly checks 2 of them. Also, attendance counts in your grade.
Lei Zhou tries to ruin lives. I was a finance major and was in love with the program. Finance 320 is supposed to be an INTRODUCTORY PRINCIPLES COURSE! He treats the class like his graduate class. The quizzes are 100 times harder than the homework and nothing like the examples. He sets the class so at least 40% of students fail. Good luck passing.
Funny guy, only good thing to say. Quizzes/tests are actually open note/book, but still so hard that it doesn't help much. Content seemed more appropriate for high level finance classes. His content was beyond the text sometimes. Everyone studied their butts off only to get taken in the Final today. Dropped me from an A to a B, needlessly hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He is the worst teacher I ever had. Final is 40% of the grade and he makes it hard.
Took FINA 320. Was given tons of homework in which only 2 questions were graded. Tests were much harder than lecture, sample problems, & homework. Would just state quiz questions will be more tricky to aid in our learning.
This class is too difficult for a required intro class. Lengthy homework yet only 2 random problems are graded. Quizzes/exams are way harder than what youre taught. Little to no extra credit and youll be lucky if you see a 1 point curve on a quiz/exam. Be prepared to work hard for even a C. Hands down hardest business core class youll take...
Definitely a hard teacher. Barely scraped by with an A thanks to the curve, but needed all the extra credit. Kinda gets a bad rep tho. I talked to him in office hours and via email and he was pretty accommodating. Just make the effort. Grading system does suck, hw grading is arbitrary. I thought quizzes were easier but class grades say otherwise
If you're a Finance Major, this class is great. It prepares you very much for core, and even the CFA exam. No doubt its difficult, but if you study and attend the lectures and ask him for help, he'll be more than willing.
Worst teacher I have ever had at NIU. grades 2/45 homework questions and the final was worth 46% of the class. Doesn't care if students pass the class.
He's a funny guy, tough professor. A lot of people are saying that he doesn't want students to pass; that's not true. Very accommodating but he definitely wants students to earn their grades. Thought this course was a little over the top for an introductory course, as most students don't have a strong background in the material. Good luck!
Honestly, Worst teacher I ever had. I hope I never get to take him again.
Great teacher you just have to actually put in the work to pass. You will learn a lot in his class. Only downside is he only grades two questions on his long homework assignments and the final is worth 40% of the grade. Overall great opportunity to challenge yourself and learn a lot.
STAY FAR AWAY!!!!!!!! This man makes it his mission to make sure students fail. This is not an intro level class, rather it is a graduate level class. By far the most difficult course I have ever taken. Professor does not care about the students. You have been warned.
He only grades quizzes which arent cumulative. But the final exam is and its 40% of your grade. There are online lecture slides and homework with solutions, but they arent graded.
zhou's tests and quizzes are so much harder than the lectures
Really bad - This is a fundamentals course and for those who are not majoring in finance, it is a really hard course, especially the way he makes it. Hello, please remember that all your students are not finance majors, so your curving policy goes out of the window when comparing with finance students. Stay away from this professor!
Zhou went to china and we didnt get class for like 3 weeks. his quizzes are hard and the homework takes along time to do. his final is worth like 50 percent of your grade. really crazy. its also hard to understand what he says so bring your headphones to class. good luck
Zhou sucks. I couldn't keep up with his lectures in person and would just listen to the online lectures instead. Only grades are quizzes and the cumulative final thats worth 40% of your grade. Plus 20 attendance points. The examples he gives in class are way easier than what he throws at you on the final. Don't take this class, your GPA will suffer
Easy problems for examples and homework. 10 times harder problems on quizzes and exam. The only exam we had was the final. Worth 40% of your grade. Pretty unreasonable. There's a curve too. So just be smarter than the rest of the class. About 50% of the class got a C or below. Really wish NIU would listen to our concerns but nothing ever changes.
It was really tough to understand to his lectures. Problems on Powerpoints and somewhat homework were easy but on the TEST they were really difficult! Whenever we would ask for him to explain a problem or work on it he said he couldn't because he was going to run out of time and we should go to the GAs for help.
Did well on all my quizzes and bombed my final exam. Possibly one of the hardest final exams Ive taken. Instead of wanting his students to learn. He puts traps in quizzes and final.
he gave more than enough resources for help. He provide sample quizzes, homework packets, online lectures, notes, and mock quizzes before the exam. There was also mock study guides sent out from a student that helped us as well. You need to put forth the effort to pass, but its doable. He also was available for help w extended OH before each quiz
Only grades are attendance and exams. The powerpoints only cover 30% of what is expected of you to know for the exams. The only way to learn was to look at his homework solutions and see if you could understand the work. His expectations are way too high and prides himself on failing students. you will see content for the first time on exams.
Easily the worst professor at NIU. He makes an introduction class almost impossible to pass. He prides himself on tricking you on exams (he has bragged about it before). The only grades for this class are attendance (1 point) and exams. He goes through his slides and doesnt take the time to show us how to work out the problems. AVOID AT ALL COST
The final is worth 40% of your grade, the first day of class he went through rate my professor and explained why him being rated so bad is ok and he doesn't need to change anything about how he attempts to teach.
Zhou is the worst. 300 pt class where 20 pts is attendance, 40% of it is the final and the rest 160 is divided into 5 40 point quiz. This class is so hard, and do not know how I passed. He barely explains anything in class, and his exams are so hard. Go in for help with the tutors, study the hw/quizzes, and mock quizzes. Finance dept sucks so much
Zhou has to be the hardest professor I've taken. His quizzes are tricky and hard. I recommend doing the homework and quiz and understanding the work of both to succeed in the class. He gives tons of extra credit points and curves the quizzes (usually 2-3 points) along with the final. Don't take this class lightly and study hard. He is very willing.
This professor doesn't teach the material. He goes over 20% of material needed to pass the class. This class is basically SELF TAUGHT. If you only try to go to class and pass the class, it is nearly impossible without already having a deep understanding of finance. Avoid this professor at all costs. Honestly, I'm surprised he still teaches at NIU.
This is my 3rd time taking the class. The class is so hard and the quizzes don't match with his slides. Good luck. I almost passed this last time I took it but miss it by a few points. Zhou is very hard.
This class is difficult, but Zhou gives you all the resources needed in order to pass. Quizzes count for 50% of your grade, attendance is 10%, and the final is 40%. You have to do well on the quizzes! He posts a mock quiz online with the same test bank as the actual quiz. Get a couple peoples mock quiz, study them hard, and youll be fine!
Great Professor! He wants you to learn the material and he's funny. You can easily understand him. Quizzes are easy because he gives you questions on the practice mock quiz that are straight from exam. Can get extra credit for participating. He's willing to help. Have to take time to study and learn, if you don't you WILL NOT pass.
You're reading this because you have heard that this class is hard. You have heard right my friend. Buckle your seatbelt and get ready to straight up not have a good time. The final is worth 40% (Yes 4 0) of your grade. I would consider saying 10 Hail Mary's prior to attempting the final. And hey, if you pass let me know and we'll grab a beer.
Grad Students: Prof. Zhou is fantastic, but he makes sure you understand the material. Memorization won't help, you need to put in the work. Keys to success here (in order): Read the text, listen to the lectures, do the practice problems, do the HW, take the practice exams, and grade your work before exams. This class was tough but I loved it.
You learn more from the homework than his powerpoints, mock exams and mock quizzes than much else. Really, the best thing to do is to study the homework and quizzes. Final is worth 40%. I think he's tough, but fair and gives a lot of resources you need to learn and practice. My advice? Chegg and quizlet. Bottom line: you don't get to slack off.
Zhou's attempt at teaching so that his course releases a "quality product" of student falls flat and becomes an impractical introductory course at best.
I had to retake his course after the first time. The only way I was able to learn the material was to read the book. His lectures did not provide any good information that would be tested on. I went to him in office hours and never got the help I needed. I would suggest finding someone in the class that has a good understanding before the class.
He disciplined, shamed, and yelled at students for using the bathroom. Never wanted to return to his class or the university after he embarrassed me and others for doing so. He did not want to help when I or my classmates had questions. He was unprofessional and rude. It was a disappointing experience and I hope no one else has to experience this.
What a horrible experience. He was hands down my worst educational experience including middle school and high school. He was very rude and very very unhelpful. I got a lot of help from the other students. And things he complicated unnecessarily were explained much better by them. Avoid him at all costs.
One of my hardest class, the professor test/quiz is so hard that half of the class fails and he does not give curve. Do the practice quiz and study hard and expect test/quiz to be extremely hard and each question make you think.
If you are not a finance or accounting major do not take him, his quizzes are really hard and account for 40% of your grade, he also makes you take his quizzes during a very specific designated time(9:30-10am) which is extremely annoying since they are all lockdown browser anyways.
taking this class for the FALL 2020 semester. Have to retake again this upcoming spring because I did not pass the class. It's ridiculous that he's the only option for FINA 320 at NIU. It poorly reflects their business program. This guy is a TERRIBLE prof. Our ONLY grades this semester were exams. No curve. This prof is a hack. Wish I could rate 0.
Wants you to devote your entire time to his class. He didnt curve any of the quizzes this semester. This class is not good for you mental health as you will be extremely stressed out and have anxiety throughout the whole course. At this point I think NIU doesnt care since they get more more money from students having to retake the course.
The grading structure of this class is ridiculous. Didnt curve any of the quizzes this semester didnt take into consideration we are in the middle of a pandemic and students are already feeling stressed out. Gave out a 3-point curve on the final and that is it. Ended up with a D was only 4 points away from a C. First class I have ever failed.
Took the class online, where the only grades you get are tests you take in lockdown browser with respondus monitor. Normally he gives a curve on the tests (based on the highest scores in the class, so if the highest was a 97 - everyone gets 3 point curve). Unfortunately cheating is rampant and it ruins it for the people who actually don't cheat.
Worst class I have ever taken.
His lectures are pointless to attend because it is just him rambling on and not making any sense. Expects you to understand everything even without him teaching you. Quizzes count for the whole grade and I did not do good on a majority of them, then the final is worth 40% of your grade thankfully I passed.
A 210/300 is required to pass FINA 320 with a C. Complete memorization of every detail is required to barely pass. I nearly failed risking my anticipated graduation date. I lost my 4.0 GPA & had to quit my job amid a pandemic in order to pass this class due to the ridiculous time commitment. Zhou argued over the BOOK facts, so why make me buy it?
Coming into the class I had heard of all the complaints pertaining to his class structure and teaching methods. I was told that majority of students fail/drop. This left me hoping to pass with even a 'C'. I had an 'A' going into the Final, which is 40% of the course grade. Finished with a B+. I always studied last minute. It's doable.
I used the tutors almost every day last semester. I put blood, sweat and tears into this class just to come up 2 points short of a C. Professor Zhou makes fun of you when asking for help, and tries demoralize you with every chance he gets. NIU clearly wants you to lose your chances of getting a business degree by putting him in your way.
The rumors are true, Zhou is a tough professor. This class was the most difficult class that I have ever taken. That being said, he does give you everything you need to succeed. You absolutely have to study, go over your notes, try to participate in class. Try to get a group to study with and don't fall behind at the start! He's pretty funny too.
I was stressed because of how people talked about him more than his class actually. I took it asynchronously but still could get a high grade. He replied to my email super quick, even during the weekend. Plus he provides the curve for the quizzes. The cumulative exam was the only one that stressed me out the most since I am not good at memorizing.
Online, his class is easy as long as you watch the lectures and take advantage of the unlimited mock quizzes. He curves on quizzes and homework is taken for completion. He also does not apply minuses, so theres no stress over getting your grade to an A level vs an A-.
I was stressed while two advisers told me that this course was tough. I was courious then I explored a little bit of this course and read reviews about professor Zhou, I know the "reason". But I am more confused now. You just need to study the notes he presented and finish your homework, practice mock quiz, then it is not hard to get A.
He is a great professor who clearly knows a lot about the subject and is very passionate about it. However, it is a very hard class so take advantage of extra credit and outside-of-class opportunities. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE OR FALL BEHIND
He teaches from a top his head and relays information that can be contradictory to the textbook. He doesn't even have his answer keys done correctly for his homework all the time. He just berates his students instead of offering help for his tests, which are all that matter to him anyways. He demands that his students devote them selves too.
Zhou is by far the worst professor that I have h his entire class is graded upon 4 quizzes and the final exam. He is useless, I emailed him asking him a question on the HW(nongraded). He simply responded that we had gone over the problem in class. The only way to pass is to memorize the quizzes doing the practice quizzes an absurd amount of times.
I was very nervous starting this class because I heard horror stories but to my surprise, the class is really not that bad. Lei Zhou is very difficult to understand during his lecture which is fine because he has us watch recorded lectures before class that is worth some points that help. Just remember to study the problems hard.
Any horror stories you hear about this class are true, be prepared to lose sleep over FINA320. My mental health has been at an all time worse because of this class and their is no other professor that teaches this course. Only way to remotely pass the class is by doing mock quizzes and practice problems religiously even on days you dont have class
So... professor Zhou is a tough grader and not super in-touch with the reality of how busy student's lives are. After my 1 EC pt, I only lost 0.5pts the whole semester, so it is possible to get almost a perfect grade, but you will have to work very hard. He tries to be his version of "nice." He really does try & care, but he expects too much.
The class is hard, but he does do a lot to help with getting a better grade. You can earn extra credit points by just participating in class and answering questions. The tests are hard, but he provides practice tests that have mostly the same questions as the normal test. I would recommend the online section of this class.
Prof. Zhou has made this one of my hardest classes. A lot of the questions on quizzes are on the mock quizzes he provides, but you have to do them an unreasonable amount of times if you want to know every question. I found myself worrying about this class every day of the school week.
Dr. Zhou is a fair professor in that he is clear with what is expected of you. However, this is easily the hardest class I've ever taken. I broke down crying twice while studying for exams. There is absolutely no reason for a 300 level class to be this difficult.
Professor Zhou is a joke. He teaches a introductory level course like a graduate level course. The first day of class he spent 40 minutes explaining why his rating is so bad and that the fail rate for his class over the last 3 years is 35-40%. If you want to pass this get ready to teach yourself. Take it online and your life will be way easier
Lei Zhou is the worst professor I have ever had at NIU. I am so glad the semester is finally over, since this class made me miserable. I understood none of the content he "taught" us. He was also not very remorseful with changing the times for our final. He also knows that majority students fail his class and does not care. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
5 Quizzes, one gets dropped and you watch lectures as homework and he goes over any questions in class. This class is challenging but not impossible. Lectures and recordings of class are all accessible to rewatch.
Zhou is a great professor. In my opinion, the bad reviews are from lazy students who aren't willing to sit down for 2-3 hours at a time and work out the problems by hand. If you take detailed notes on each of the lectures, do every single problem he assigns in the modules, and practice the mock quizzes, you will be fine. He's a pretty funny guy.
Zhou is very knowledgeable in what he does. Its just a very tough class because your grade relies on how you perform on the final exam. I recommend getting help with peer tutors or office hours sooner rather than later. Doing the homework will benefit you a lot too. In-person isnt bad - just sit in the front.
Professor Zhou is tough, He has homework assigned which is not graded, and has mock quizzes which aren't graded either. They are supposed to help you with the actual quizzes and just a heads up .. the final is worth 40% of your total grade :). Goodluck!
He is lazy. A lazy teacher who couldnt care less about students. I hope the business school does something about this teacher. He would be a joke if it werent so sad. I learnt nothing after struggling all semester long. He contributed to my mental health problems .
If you take this class, take it during the summer when it's your only focus. He is tough because exams, like for the CFA, have a high fail rate and require months of study. Hence why the final is 40% He tries to instill a work ethic in people to prepare you for such. Most people take the easy way out and quit. I'm one of them. He's ok
I would never take this course again.
FINA320 & Zhou get a lot of hate, but I have actually really enjoyed this class! It’s not easy but definitely manageable if you watch the lectures and do the work! Dr. Zhou is really funny and makes the class super interesting.
Good professor that is funny. He does a good job of teaching if you are willing to sit down and understand the information. Work hard on understanding, not on just how to do the problems. Test heavy class.
Professor Zhou is a great guy. The coursework it self is very time consuming to learn and you will need to put in a lot of work to achieve success in the class. If you struggle learning from online videos instead of in the classroom, then this will be difficult for you. I'd suggest taking this class in a semester where it can be your primary focus.
One of the worst professors. All bad reviews are true.Don't understand why he is a teacher. He uses a teaching method called 'fear motivation'. Makes everyone feel uncomfortable by indirectly calling his students stupid. Class grade only consists of six exams, which are very hard. Must rely on the mock quizzes, sample quizzes, and homeworks to study.
I'm one of those that don't understand why he has such a low rating. I took FINA320 online. 3pts for watching the lectures. 40 pts on the quizzes, and he does curve. Anytime I had a question he answered within an hour or two. Do the practice quizzes and look at the homework. He gives the answers with breakdowns on how to solve them on there.
Just took FINA 320 in 8 weeks. It was tough, but IT'S UP TO YOU TO SUCCEED. Dr. Zhou lays the foundation and it's easy to reach out via email. The class was difficult, but if you do the additional practice questions and some practice quizzes you will be fine. Do not be scared by the negative reviews by students with 0 work ethic or motivation.
Finance 320 was the hardest class I have ever taken but it was not impossible. It's hilarious reading all of these comments trash talking Professor Zhou because it's not his fault you didn't put the time or effort into learning the subject. I spent all my time studying when most students couldn't even show up for class. Work hard and you will pass.
Good luck. You're gonna need it
one of the most uncaring professors I have ever met. Was not willing to help at all. Will ignore your emails, brag about how many people fail his class, and wont give any leeway with grades. Doesn't care if you fail, will just say "try harder, or do better next time". Extremely disappointing to see a professor not care about their students success
FINA 320 is challenging but if you pay attention to lectures, do all homework and take the practice quiz you can easily get the grade you want.
The videos are useless. HW and PQ are the only things that help. He doesn't teach you, teach yourself. Too hard for no reason. More of an Algebra course than FINA. Doesn't prepare you for his tests. If I knew I would have to go through this course to get my major I wouldn't have picked this school. WORST course in my four years of college.
Take the mock quiz attempts and break down the problems you don't understand in manageable chunks, better to study 2 hours a day rather than waiting until the last minute. The class is not as bad as the reviews describe it and the professor makes it interesting. I would recommend having your notes all together in a digital platform like Notion.
As a human being, Professor Zhou is a good man. However, the inability to understand that his class is far out of the realm of difficulty of a normal class at NIU is quite annoying. If you spend hours a day on this course, you will succeed. However, if you are in a time heavy semester with courses and activities, good luck.
It is a good class but requires time. Zhou is a good professor and he understands the subject well.
At the beginning I hated this class. But at the end it became my favorite class. If you watch the videos and do the HW you WILL pass. I took 6 classes this semester and I passed. He gives extra credit for finding errors in his work. He also gives a curve in every quiz depending on how others did. He provides 10 practice quizzes for each quiz.
The grade you get in this class is a direct correlation to the amount of work you put into it. If you actually study, you will do well. Watch the video lectures and take notes. Do all of the HW for each unit and UTILIZE YOUR MOCK QUIZ ATTEMPTS. You will see multiple questions from your homework/quizzes on the actual exams. You'll be fine, GL.
This professor is terrible. Expects you to learn the material all on your own & doesn't explain any of the correct answers. Just read the question during the lecture give you the right answer and move towards. The only thing that is considered grading is the tests which are 5 tests and a final exam. Terrible class for a business marketing student.
Studied hard for all mock quizzes, quizzes, and exams. Did NOT matter. Everything on tests was completely different and questions made you jump thru hoops and read backward basically in order to even understand what they were asking for. Put in hours of study time and watched all lectures and did all homework, and barely passed the class.
doesnt explain.
Extremely confusing, Expects students to watch multi hour "Pre lectures" every week before class, Every point matters. The worst I have experienced so far
His lectures are useless so he forces you to go by having attendance and pop quizzes. You are pretty much expected to learn all the content on your own. not a fun class if you can find another professor please do.
Worst "teacher" I've ever had. You essentially teach yourself. Exams are a million times harder than the homework, lectures, and even mock exams. This class ruined my mental health and sent me into a major depressive episode. Ridiculous that this course is required for every business student, regardless of major. Good luck to every future victim.
I can confidently say that NIU offering Zhou as the only 320 professor is a ploy to make everyone stay at the university longer. I'm shocked no admin chair sees the average grades and think the curriculum of this class is fine with the only points being tests and quizzes. You have to teach yourself a ridiculous amount of content cause he won't.
Dr. Zhou is incredibly knowledgeable and a great professor. If you show up to class and pay attention, do the mock quizzes, and put some effort in, you'll have no problem getting a good grade in his class. He's also pretty funny and makes class very interesting and entertaining.
Dr. Zhou is an amazing professor. You just need to show up and engage in class and it is an easy class to pass. He allows you to take practice quizzes multiple times making it very easy to prepare for test day. Ignore the negative reviews those people simply didn't put the work in.
If you are a finance major this class should be a breeze. Don't get scared by all the negative reviews as they are all non-finance majors. I had a 103% in the class until the last few weeks and set the curve each quiz. If you want to pass do this: take all 10 mock quizzes, do the homework, and ask questions during class.
Very nice lady but omg she is a terrible teacher. Lectures are the most boring thing ever, you have to use McGraw Hill and you only get 3 attempts on each homework which counts for 20% of your grade, and her tests are way harder than they need to be. Once you get start getting into the bank liquidity unit it feels like the class is in Chinese.
He is a very funny guy. But he requires you to watch hour long lectures with questions embedded to test your knowledge but then doesn't put the answers. This has been the only class that your whole grade is only your tests. I feel like other majors (other than finance) in the COB were set up for failure. overall you have to teach yourself
Professor Zhou's class is no walk in the park, but with dedication it can be rewarding. Utilize resources like mock quizzes and Unstuck ai to stay on top of the material.
honestly just study hard and if you dont you arent passing the class
Zhou taught the coursework effectively. Lectures were informative and engaging, and he is a very funny guy. 320 does require some effort, and students who don't put in effort will fail. You will pass if you watch the videos, show up to class, and take the practice exams.
This class is deemed terrible by the professor's teaching style, overall people complain too much. Yes, it isn't easy, but it's college you need to work hard and learn the material. Overall you need to put a lot of effort into FINA 320, but it is manageable if you put the work in.
Professor Zhou is nice, and the class isn't as hard as people describe it. You will need to put in some work unlike many of the other 300-level courses. But as long as you utilize the mock quizzes and study for the quizzes you'll pass. Don't wait until the last minute to study, utilize the extra credit, he also typically curves the quizzes.
He is just a bad professor, nice person though. The only thing that motivated me to study hard was that I did not want to have to take him again for a whole semester.
All the comments here are from students who want to put minimal effort in to succeed. Zhou is a great professor. The material is very difficult especially if you do not put the work in. Take all the mock quizzes and go to class. Zhou does not hold your hand and he shouldn't. Be responsible and you'll do great!
All class grade is quizzes / final. He uses the same material every semester - (You would think since he doesn't have to grade anything or make new assignments he would spend more time teaching his students rather than playing kahoot every class. ) Nice guy just seems like this class is a joke to him / as well as to the rest of COB faculty
Lei Zhou should not be the only FINA320 professor available at NIU. His teaching style is completely lacking. You watch a video, teach yourself the content, and then come to class and do three practice questions, a pop quiz, and a Kahoot! The homework takes about 10 hours, and doesn't even count for a grade but you'll fail if you don't do it.
You can do all 10 mock quizzes each module, do each homework problem, ask questions in class, and STILL fail. This professor's teaching method is a joke. He brags on the first day about how half the class fails each semester - even shows the actual stats. The "curve" he put on each quiz was an additional 2 points max this semester. Good luck :/
I'm sitting at an A before the final, and as an accounting major, this class isn't that bad. I show up to class, do the homework and mock quizzes, and maybe study an hour every other day. The people that have negative reviews just don't want to put in the work that is expected of any business major. Simply go to class and do the mock quizzes.
If you use all 10 mock quiz attempts and study you will pass. Don't let lazy students make this class seem intimidating. It is a lot of work no question. But stay consistent, do the mock quizzes, and study consistently. Most people that take 320 don't know how to handle academic adversity and complain the moment it gets difficult. DON'T BE LAZY
Amazing teacher, people who review him poorly were unwilling to put in the time to do well. Can be considered tough but if you can get through the class you will understand the material well, which is what a college class is supposed to be.
Only way to pass is DOING THE MOCK QUIZZES (all 10) and getting all the points from pop quizzes, extra credit not worth it.
This class isn't impossible—people just don't put in the effort. The professor gives you everything you need to succeed. Yes, you have to teach yourself a bit, but the material is manageable. Do the homework, review the 10 mock quizzes before each quiz, and you'll likely get at least a B or C. Study a few days before and do the extra credit!
Hardest class I've taken thus far.
Zhou really does care about his students, he just wont care about you if you don't put in effort to learn and study(which is how college should be). People that do poorly in this class have don't know how to study and handle academic adversity. Do the mock quizzes and study consistently and you'll pass.
I passed the class by doing all the available extra credit, doing all the mock quizzes, and trying my best to understand the material. The homework didn't help me if I'm being honest, the mock quizzes helped the most. The pop quizzes are easy, just watch the videos and review. Seek help if you don't understand. OMIS major.
Sounds like an episode of South Park.
You need to study for this class or its going to be a tough time. If you fail the first 2 quizzes you should drop the class you have basically no hope of passing. The extra credit assignment is long, but very much needed. good luck trying to understand him in class.
Was Professor Zhou's content complex and tough to understand... yes. BUT in terms of clarity and what needed to be done... there was never any questions. His class structure was incredibly organized and easy to understand. On top of this he was a cool guy that cared about his students. I enjoyed lectures and his humor.
The content itself isn't that hard, what makes this course so difficult is the fact that its only really graded based off the 6 exams you take and the pop quizzes. And the fact that each exam is exactly 3 weeks apart from one another. The amount of information he expects you to retain in such a short period of time is unreasonable.
This guy is a cartoon villain. He laughs when everyone gets kahoot questions wrong and enjoys it. The content is not hard but his class layout is unbelievable and is set up to make you fail. You have to do all practice quizzes to pass quizzes. He is funny and chill as a person but the worst professor Iv'e ever had.
