I learned a lot from her. She has become one of my favorites :)
Don't take this class. She asks way too much of her students and expects you to put in a ton of outside class time. Not recommended
Let me just use a few words to describe this person: arrogant, rude, and totally disrespectful and she has no people skills.........The demander and ore that permeates around and through this individual is unbelievable.
Immature and socially inept. Has a ways to go before she becomes any sort of good professor. She also plays favorites.
I advise you highly do not take her class. She is very immature and should not be teaching because she is not ready for it. that is all I will say about this professor.
she does not critique students in an effective way, she instead belittles the work but also the students. She is extremely arrogant and blatantly rude. I do not know why she teaches at all.
She is a terrible person.
I cannot believe what she wears; it’s totally unprofessional and unappreciated for a studio class. However, it’s her personality that stinks, let me count the ways. She is extremely pretentious, immature, and moody. Should I go on?
she grades you on how much she likes you and not on your work. do not take her... she should not be teaching.
do not take her class, its not the work load that iam talking about but her personality, its horrible. she degrades her students. she is a mean and miserable person.
She has alot to offer students. Brilliant artist. Can be brash but if you can get past that you can learn so much. Her critiques are ridiculous and I did better than most. She will not compliment your work in any way, only point out what is wrong with it. I as a student I need compliments as well as criticism to do well. Helpful if you're possitive
its not so much the work, but her demeanor that really stinks. she's completely rude and disrespectful to students out and inside the class.
I truly feel sorry for anyone unfortunate enough to have to suffer the presence of this woman.
i enjoyed printmaking before i took her class
do not listen to a word by this woman. All she does is express the negative aspects of works and will never give a positive remark. she also wants her students to become little copies of her. She wants you to do the same work as she creates. Do not take her class, I promise you will regret it. she is so rude ad callous.
take anyone else desides this woman, take her class at another college. I would encourage it.
I will never take her class again. Take anyone else because who ever that person is, he/she will be better in every aspect. You will miss nothing if you take someone else. This is my recommendation to you from a student to a student.
definitely a hard grader, she doesn't give a's....at all. alot of people don't like her, but i really enjoyed her class, and shes not as bad as people make her out to be. you're constantly drawing, but thats the class you're signing up for, so dont sign up if you don't like to draw. you'll only get better, not worse. i highly recommend it.
She acts like a teenage girl and interacts with her students accordingly.
Yes, Professor Craven is tough. She will make you work hard, but I have learned more from her than many of my other proffessors combined. If you are a serious artist, and want to improve your skills, Professor Craven will help you create works that you are proud of. If you are a slacker, simply dont' take her class.
if you are not serious about printmaking/drawing don't take the course. craven teaches her classes as if you were at an art school instead of bsc. she is very demanding but always willing to come in and help you with your work out of class.
Words like respect dribble out of her mouth yet the meaning of that word eludes for. I do not know how she expects to get respect from her students when she clearly does not give it. She is a sad individual and should be pitied.
She is not professional at all!!! Just listen to her talk...She should not be teaching if she cannot remain professional - she shouldn't be crossing boundaries with her students, she plays favorites and is very bias. Very unethical too.
If she wants to be a professor, she needs to act like one - try being a little bit more professional and tactful when speaking to a human being. Grow up and dress professional, like the 'professional position you've been appointed for.
Completely unprofessional, immature, and lacks effective instruction skills. Acts like a power hungry 16 year old girl who was appointed professor. She seems to have a lot of knowledge but is unwilling to give it and will try and make you feel bad about that. I gag every time I hear the word "printmaking" now. She should not be teaching.
reevaluate yourself, Grow up, and act more professional in your conduct and dress. What arrogance!!! How can you stand yourself?
She has a bad attitude. This is a printmaking ONE..NOT grad printing. I'm not devoting my entire to life to printmaking like she is. Get off the power trip, grow up, and act like a professor.
of all the prof I have come into contact with, she takes the cake. she is to immature for this teaching position. she knows alot about print making but "clueless" when it comes to teaching and how to treat people. arrogent, rude, disrepectful are words that discribe her.
She is intensely difficult as a person and professor. However, if you are a serious artist/art major you SHOULD take her course. She works you so hard that your skills are increased farther than you could ever reach on your own terms. She is quite amazing and you learn ALOT throughout the course.
Honestly if you're that concerned with her wardrobe not only should you not take the class but you shouldn't be in college because that's just immature.Yes, it is a lot of work, but it's a STUDIO class, so expect that. She's perfectly nice, and she's funny. It's fun, just don't take it if you have other classes that require alot of extra work.
From the looks of the 10/4/07 comment, Leigh has been lurking on this site.
Make your studnet work but treat them with respect and not some trash you find on your high heels. Take some teaching and social skills classes because you lack in these areas. get off your horse.
Professor Craven is not only an amazing teacher, but an amazing person. She loves art and she wants you to love art too. She is not there to be your best friend and give you an A for everything you do. Life doesn't work that way. Expect to work hard, but get really good results. I love her!
Hey she may be hard yea, but she will definitely go the extra mile for you if you are willing to put in the effort and listen to her advice and talk about hot!!! I don?t know about the rest of you but she is got it going on
Someone needs to put this Napoleonic dictator to rest. Not only does she have high expectations, she doesn't teach. Everything I learned I had to ask upper level students about. She doesn't consider hard work, time, or emotion invested in pieces, she lacks any humanity and other professor recognize it too.
she knows what she is talking about unforunately she does not know how to teach. she will work you hard which should be expected from a studio class but don't expect to learn from her, you learn from upper level students, they are the real teachers.
It's not our fault you couldn't get a job working at RISD, so ditch the attitude and learn what being a teacher really means.
She will push you beyond belief, and if you listen to what she says you will love her by the end of your critique, but hate her again once she assigns your next drawing. 1 Self portrait a week for the whole semester, nude models all semester, both sex. Just listen to what she says, follow her directions and tips, and you will do fine. DO YOUR WORK
There are two well qualified professors I've met here in the last 3 years: James Crowley and Leigh Craven. Both have high expectations, and both made my education here worth the time. If this is your major, her drawing classes are essential and she's an expert printmaker. She gives a lot of work but if you do it, you will be a better artist.
Eyes open for the comments with perfect grammar and punctuation. Its Leigh, and she is a narcissistic, sow. I'd hit it if she would not talk to me again. Showed us her portfolio and the students in the class, whom were very talented, created better work...regularly. Her prints are awful and from what I understand, her drawings are worse. Kitchen.
If the word "slacker" is used in a comment, it is Leigh trying to boost her points. Not worth your time. You will lose your mind.
Professor CRAVEN is hard to get used to, she comes off harsh and comes across as someone you may never like, but by mid-semester you will love her. Take her advice, and do your work like you're supposed to. She knows what shes talking about and has every right to be on a "high horse"- take her class if you're ready to prove yourself.
I get knocked down, but I get up again. Wait, no just stay down.
not mentally sane and should not be teaching.
Professor Craven is definitely into the art world which is nice to see a teaching practicing art. It was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken although I did learn alot. By the end I was thankful, but throughout the course I wanted to cry every week from the work load. Would I take her course in printmaking now? I don't know....So much work!
I recently took an Art Content Test, while studying there were many questions and points about Printmaking, that I had no idea about. She doesn't teach about Printmaking-you just produce.I would have liked to learn more about the history and been able to practice different methods. She only lets you use different methods if she wants too. Awful class
In a world fraught with terrorism, hunger, sickness, war and billions spent on searching for moon water, it's nice to know there is a professor who can dedicate so much time to making things beautiful and expanding ones own creative boundaries far beyond ones own personal goals. A gift to BSC. IF you're up for the challenge, don't miss out.
I took a once weekly night class on bookbinding with her. If you're willing to do a lot of work and take truthful criticism, take her. The workload was intense in the beginning but I came out of it with a lot of useful skills. Remember that an honest critique isn't always what you want to hear!
Drawing II- Intense workload!! At least 5-8 hours of homework a week on top of studio time. Learned SO MUCH!! She scared away 3/4 of the class after the first week. But glad I stuck it out, it was worth the experience and knowledge. She's there to teach you not be your friend. I came out with much better perception and some awesome skills!!
I highly suggest that you avoid any class taught by this woman. She will not treat you like a human being, and unless you manage to become one of her favorites, she will never find anything good in your artwork. I for one will not be taking printmaking unless another professor offers it.
At first, I really did not know what to make of this teacher. I thought she was just plain mean and awful, but if you stick it out and suck it up, you will learn so much from her. She is brilliant and she has so much to offer her students, who she genuinely cares about. As long as you put in the effort, you'll be fine.
Take her class if you want to be a better artist but if you don't care about your growth, avoid her. People fail her class because they're too afraid to ask her for help. She actually loves helping studetns. Very knowledgeble and knows what she's talking about. I actually cant believe she's teaching at BSC she is an amazing gift for this school.
Professor Craven is an amazing teacher and this comes from a student has has done both very well and poor in her classes. You will get out what you put in and she is ALLWAYS willing to go the extra mile to help. She is extremely hard but her students work is miles above the rest. I have learned so much from her as will you if you put in the effort.
After takin Drawing I new what to expect. A pretty teacher who comes off rude. This class is extremely time consuming. You put in minim. 5x the amount of time outside of the class, meanin when ur not scheduled to be there, but u still have to be there printing. ASK FOR HELP, NO PROCRASTINATING.You will be happy tou took it seeing your work complete
Initially, Craven comes of very scary. However, if you prove that you are serious about your artwork she becomes a lot easier to get along with. I learned a lot from her class and she made me a better artist in the long run.
Avoid this professor if you're not excellent at drawing, otherwise she will rip your work apart. Not a pleasant person. Take drawing from someone else, printmaking at another school and transfer the credits, and forget the bookbinding class. If she doesn't like you she'll actually ignore you. Not a good attitude for a professor.
Brilliant teacher, worst class I've ever taken. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone unless you want to devote your entire life to printmaking. Honestly one of the worst experiences of my life,Its just was not worth the countless hours put in. Strongly advise you not to take this class unless its your only one and you have LOTS of $$$$
I wouldn't wish this class upon my worst enemy. Please do not take this class unless you read comments on page 7-12, they describe it perfectly.
Had her for an advisor and she was very rude and unhelpful. She was unprofessional from the start and didn't seem very interested in helping me at all. I avoid taking classes with her because she just seems very rude and made me feel very uncomfortable. She made me feel like an annoyance. A teacher should not make a student feel that way.
Excellent professor!!I love her teaching and learnt a lot from her!
By taking this class, you are up for a challenge, but it is very rewarding.I have learned more in this studio than I have in any other(I learned more about figure drawing in 1 project from this professor than I did in my drawing 2 class)2 bits of advice: self discipline &don't take her sarcasm personally, she's trying to help you improve. Good Luck!
great teacher- she's tough, but for a reason. Very time-consuming classes, miserable at times, but you improve immensely- more so than in any other course
i pay a lot of money to take these classes and she looks at me like i have seven heads whenever i ask a question and she talks down to you and is a sarcastic witch! awful class awful woman....
Don't take this class unless it it completely required for your major. Unbelievably time consuming, very expensive, and hard grader. Craven helps you a lot without helping at all, if that makes sense. If your work looks like crap she'll tell you that. If you don't like drawing definitely don't take this with her.
make your students work. that's fine but she is a snob. rude and has an ugly personality. she's mean and unhelpful. if u are a guy flirt with her and u will do fine.i cannot say enough negative stuff about this sad excuse of a person. DONT TAKE HER !!!
When I first took her I was also taking 5 other classes, working full time, and dealing with family drama. She is not like the other profs in that she doesn't take slacking of any kind. She expects you to put in 100% If you cant deal with criticism then you are in the wrong field, artist here criticism 24/7, she is giving you the backbone you need
Craven has been my advisor since I transferred to BSU. She wasn't available to advise me, and I sought alternate advising for registration. When I asked her recently to look at my degree audit, she told me I was on the incorrect trajectory for my concentration, and then asked who my advisor is. I have since changed my concentration and advisor.
She seems really scary but she's actually really cool once you get to know her. I dreaded this class all semester until the last month. Now she's my favorite professor! Give her a chance and listen to everything she tells you and you'll enjoy the class. Be sure to take notes during demos and crits and don't ask stupid questions.
Love her, once she gets comfortable and you give her respect she's laid back and asks the class what thy want to do and what they prefer, has a good sense of humor once you show her your into the work and are trying.
He's crazy but amazing
If you enjoy spending 20+ hours a week in the studio (not including class time) and being ridiculed by your professor in front of your peers then you should definitely take a class with Craven.
Love her, class is tough at first but then turns fun once you show your into it. If she likes the class then it's a lot of fun, she loved us so it was great. Plus she is sneaky hot.
I LOVE HER. She is the reason why I am switching my major to fine arts. She is tough on you and tells you how it is, but if you put in the time the class is amazing. The process of printmaking is long so you will have to spend time out of class on projects. But that's not because of her, it's just the work.
Many people on here are blaming her for the workload of the course, which isn't fair. She is AMAZING. She is tough on you and expects things to be done on time. The workload is a lot for this class, but it is not her fault. She is the best professor I've had at BSU
She's an awesome teacher that teaches a tough class. The class demands more than class time to be put into the projects. But she is amazing and really personable.
I had her in the fall. I'll admit I was pretty scared of her at first but she loosens up over time. She's extremely difficult to please however if you show her that you're hellbent on improving she'll be just fine. Her students improve much faster than students with any other instructor. I'd taker her again if I was given the chance.
She wants you to buy new materials every week and is very strict about quality of work.
If you are a handsome male or the next Picasso your good. If not I highly advice avoiding Craven's class.
Professor Craven has a bad rap of being judgmental and harsh. Yes, she is harsh at times, but she kind of has to be. Her job is to make you a better artist. She is also super helpful and will work with any idea you have, if the content makes sense. Printmaking was not the easiest art form for me, but it was fun to learn and I am grateful for it.
Fantastic artist, but way too hard for a state school. She belongs at an art school where the students are generally more focused and driven and respond better to harsh criticism. Over-qualified
She once told me that my work looks like, "cheap hotel art." If you're not a fan of being criticized without there being a constructive reason behind said criticism, I suggest that you stay far away from this woman. She also had no idea that she was my academic advisor for my first two years at BSU.
Professor Craven is a fantastic teacher who understands so many various art processes. Her class is great as long as you are willing to work hard in and out of class, show up, be accountable and prepared. Do that and you will do well in this class.
At BSU we are lucky to have someone at this level and from her educational background teaching us. Save money on schools like RISD by learning from a professor who went there.
She is a very respectable and kind professor, she is easy to talk to about class work and responds to emails usually fast. Professor craven really cares about her students and wants all of her students to be successful. She cares deeply for all of her students and she produces very successful artist.
If youre looking to learn or obtain a take away from any professor I suggest Craven. Tough when it comes to grading but knowledgeable and comprehensive advice
This studio teacher has excellent training. She will raise your bar when it comes to your portfolio. If you have a problem & you are a hard-worker, she's smart, she'll get you. Don't be scared of the push - It's all part of getting you above par. Honestly, the edge people post of; it's that kind of edge that comes with genius! Embrace it!
Leigh Craven is a tough critic, she won't sugarcoat it and she won't hold back. But if you're an artist who is genuinely looking to improve you will benefit greatly from her class. Her critics are thorough and valid, she will bring the best out in you if you're able to handle the pressure.
Leigh is an amazing professor. Unfortunately people previously who have rated her on here were angry that they had to work for a grade. Leigh bases everything you do, on your own growth. I personally have grown as an artist from leigh pushing me to do my best and challenging me to try my hardest. I actually took her book making class ARTS258.
One of the few professors I've learned something from. Challenging but only because she knows you can be a great printer. She is very skilled and knowledgeable on the subject. Has clear expectations. Puts in what you put in. Will always help when you need it!
Will be taking Leigh again. She is a great! Don't take this class if you don't want to work. This is a class where you have to be all in.
I learned a lot in her class. Ive taken a drawing class and two print making classes with her and Ive learned more about art history and about so many different artists then I did in an actual art history class. Shes good at suggesting the right movements and artists when youre coming up with concepts.
While she is very direct, she will push you to limits that produce aamzing work. Very down to earth and plays great music in class
Craven is a tough professor. But she is good because she gives a lot of feedback. She is clear and concise with ways to improve, and is always willing to help you do so. It is important to show up to class to get time with her to work on your projects!
Absolutely amazing professor. She is so helpful towards her students and really wants them to be successful. Her instruction is very organized and although she may be tough, its completely out of love. If youre not serious about the medium I wouldnt recommend this class but she is the best of the best. Absolutely loved her.
Professor Craven has been a professor I have taken multiple times not because she knows me well but because she pushes me to become a better artist. I think every student needs some Leigh in their life because she makes us work hard. She is a very caring professor and she is easy to have a conversation with about whats wrong.
She is very knowledgeable in the subject matter. If you are willing to put in the work, you will do well. She is always willing to help you through any project struggles. Great sense of humor, makes class a fun time.
Professor Craven is really smart and willing to help students who are willing to help themselves. Put the work in and you will do well.
Terrific. There are not words to express the level of dedication Professor Craven has to her students and her craft.
I am so thankful I was able to take a class with her. She cares about her students and how we learn.
TAKE HER COURSE. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!
She cares so much about her students and the work they do. If youre having trouble with a project she is very helpful and her feedback is always respectful and very informative. Her class was always fun and inspiring, you learn so much from her in such a short period of time.
I took bookbinding and book arts with her and it was my favorite class! She expects a lot from you which I find important because it pushes you to become a better artist. She is knowledgeable in many fields within the arts. I would recommend her to any artist that is looking to learn a bunch and be inspired!
There is a lot of work to be done. People talk down about this professor but as someone who took her class 2 times in a row and Continues to visit. She is one professor that gives me a drive in what I do. She will tell it like it is, and push you to make it better. Who wants to be fed lies? I know I want an honest answer about my work.
Horrible person. Has no empathy. A god complex
Art Ed majors are required to take printmaking. I took Craven's class in 2016 while earning my degree, and 6 years out of school I am still traumatized and hate teaching it. She only teaches intaglio printmaking which is not helpful for teaching. One time I walked in on her laughing at my prints with some higher level students. Brutal and mean.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. Rude and unaccommodating to her students. Gives deadlines that only work for HER schedule (before 5pm on Monday, before 5:30 on Wednesday, and 4 pm on a Friday ) that take hours to do but inform students less than a day in advance. She encourages creativity but expect to fail if you aren't artistically gifted.
AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS!! i cant express this enough. she picks favorites in the class and will literally work on their assignment to get them a better grade. she crams like the last 4-5 assignments in the last week of class then gives one day or so to work on the final in class before the last day of classes is. if you can avoid her do it
Professor Craven is amongst the worst professors I've had so far at Bridgewater. Her comments during class are near-inappropriate and not something that should be said as long as you hold the professor tag and are employed by the state. She gives an unreasonable amount of homework, and picks clear favorites amongst the course.
Do not take this professor if you have a life outside of this class. She has no understanding of time and throughout the whole mandatory weekly 3-hour zoom she maybe talks about the project for 10 minutes before she goes on and yaps for 35 minutes about stuff that has no context to the class.
AVOID AVOID AVOID! Gives insane amount of homework for what most people think of just a class to graduate. Is not very helpful and picks very obvious favorites. VERY TOUGH GRADER, if you are not artistic or an art major prepare to get a lower grade.
As you can tell, most of the class came on this site already and voiced their opinions and I'd like to say all of their reviews are for the most part spot on. This professor has no sympathy for students and deducts a lot of points for the most minor mistakes. DO NOT TAKE.
You're gonna have a bad time. Unless you're an attractive man, or a prodigy art student, she's not going to like you. I sat there on the second floor of the Art Center and listened to Craven talk badly about my art to my other classmates behind my back. Professor Craven is the most negative educator I've had the awful experience of learning from.
everybody has different learning styles. the way she teaches the class is very difficult. shows you what to do once, the rest you're on your own for learning. class is stressful, the workload and the way you are being taught. With critiques of projects, she allowed other students to laugh at my work multiple times. She also laughed at my work.
She got my first review removed and told me about it so. Here you go. She is extremely rude and chooses favorites. She's doesn't teach but dishes out these crazy assignments She laughs at other student work and is blatantly rude when critiquing. I had a death in my family and missed 2 days of class. She scolded me. Showed no empathy. Avoid
Genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever had. Not understanding at all and made students cry it's insane. I have no problem with the assignments but they are tedious and take awhile. She seems to micromanage everything and if you don't do everything the exact way she would then your going to have to redo your project. Overall very stressful!
She has no respect for students. Treats the job as a paycheck and an ego boost. Looks down at others and laughs while belittling people and their work. Brags and boasts about traveling in front of college students, who have yet to establish a career and large student loans. Every email will be unhelpful, passive aggressive, petty, and long-winded.
Most condescending “teacher” ; ridicules & publicly laughs at students art. Uncaring, vulgar: makes sexual references about student art.standards are impossible to meet. You'll spend hours on art & and she'll laugh &make you hate a past time you once loved. She negatively impacted my mental health;her class would make me actually sick.
