Can't understand what she is saying.
I'm not a moron and I didnt get an A... and she is very hard to understand so dont take her!!!
Her accent is really strong and it's not always easy to understand what she's saying. Other than that, she really did a great job explaining things- if you could understand the words
Terrible, Terrible! If you want an A in her class, be sure to take a foreign language class a semester prior
She knows her stuff and pushes you to work, this is why people may not like her, but they will thank her in the future. I would take her again because I learned, even though I got a low grade.
Be prepared to work from the very beginning. Too many people try to point to her accent as a crux for learning. She is very thorough in her lectures and really pushes you on exams, however you will come away learning in her class.
I think with this sort of class you need a very thorough teacher to explain the ropes of micro econ. I thought this class was easy until the exams. She tells you not to read the book, but it is neccessary. Didn't really like how she contradicts herself and makes tests harder than they have to be.
Overall she's a cool lady... lectures are lectures, nothing too special, but the best thing about her, is the fact that she has a high pitch Asian voice that keeps you awake at all times. :-)
She is a awful teacher do not take her! Not only is she hard but only very rude!
She wasn't helpful at all if she expect U to know stuff and if you don't know, sorry. She will bash her ass off explannig in class and if you still don't understand hard luck. Don't expect to get a good grade either, her test isn't that easy to understand even though she said they are from econ test bank, she choose most difficult test from test ban
If you can get by her accent and terrible English grammar, I think you will do fairly in class...Not excellent...Just fair. She can be intimidating. She tends to ask questions in class during lecture and if no one volunteers, she will call a name from her list. Be prepared to be put on the spot! Exams are difficult so rely on your textbook!
took this class with her this spring semester 05 and failed. i had to retake this class this summer and got an A from a different professor! Chen is a terrible professor. the book is hard to understand and she is also hard to understand so your screwed both ways. DON'T TAKE HER!
Once you figure out what she means when she says that Michaelsoft pays its employees celery and French benefits, she's not bad. She gives good examples in class, and yes, she does ask the class questions during lectures, but the answers tend to be fairly obvious. Her tests are straightforward and they cover the material she lectures on.
tests were based on material covered in class...if you went to class and payed attention to the lectures you got a pretty good grade because she skips things that are in the book...hard to understand her accent though
Professor Chen is by far the best Econ teacher at UNLV
Professor Chen is by far the best Econ teacher at UNLV. For those of you who blame her accent for why you got such a low grade, try studying for a change. She teaches you everything you need to know and pushes you to learn.
Don't take her class.
her lectures are hard to understand, but she is pretty funny
Rumor has it in the econ department that she is a terrible professor. Of course I didn't listen and I still took her, but from my experience, she's not the greatest. She's not very friendly and helpful. She makes the exams difficult and tricky. Ummmm...It really makes me wonder who gave her the high ratings in here. Suspicious...
She knows her stuff but not very consistent with material, she tends to bounce back and forth between chapters, not making it easy to follow. Tends to put the class down or intimidate. Very strong accent so if thats a problem, do not take her. never lets out early, teaches up to the LAST minute. Overall, she was difficult, was warned about her b4.
She is an very mean Professor. Don't take her
very annoying teacher and also very ugly
Hard to understand and hard grader
Be ready to pay for a tutor, thats the only way to pass the class.
She is not nice at all. She is never on student's side, always talks like she is hired to be against you and give you a bad grade. I hope that she retires soon.
Teacher always shows up late, I had difficulty understanding her and what she was trying to teach. She grades really really really hard on her exams. Stay away if you want to keep your GPA up.
Hard to follow. Knows her stuff...she just does a horrible job at teaching it. She does have a decent sense of humor, but unless you are naturally gifted at ECON pick another prof. Additionally, her grade consists of 3 tests and 1 homework assigned which means even if you mess up on 1 thing it really impacts your grade.
She spends more time complaining that the class is horrible and needs to go back to the basics than teaching, and that's when you can understand her.
Don't take Chen if you want an A. I was a straight A Economics student at UNLV, and got a D on her first test and withdrew. She didn't give out a single A on the first test, and it was difficult to know what to study for. I retook with Malamud, got an A, and learned more.
Very interesting lectures, but quizzes and tests are hard. Very hard. First quiz average class average... 58%... be wary. Study really hard and never miss class... you will do ok
This teacher was the worst teacher i ever took!!! She was rude, hard to understand, not understanding at all about absences, and almost impossible to learn anything from. I suffered every time I had to sit through her class, please if you have the choice to take anyone else DO IT!!!! im saving you the pain of her annoying voice
She complains a lot about having to re-explain concepts from micro and macro but it is inevitable cz most of us took them freshman yr, 1/2 class dropped after 1st test since there is only two and two quizes and a project to get a grade. I got a B so far but it is only getting harder...
She gave us two final test even though one of the tests was already comprehensive from the department, but she just had to give us another test and make it 2.58 hour long. She is a crazy graded. I was retaking this class to move up my grade from a C+,and she gave me a C,(a lower grade than what I already had!) If I knew i would have never taken her
She is hard , but i have learned so much. The class seems difficult at first but if you stick with it you will do well. You can tell she enjoys teaching and knows her stuff.
International Trade. Chen is for the serious econ major, not lower division classes. If you are interested and willing to work hard, she is a great teacher, and you will definitely understand the material and learn a lot. If you need a 101 or 102 class, do not take Chen. If you're an econ major, you still need get ready to work.
She wont pass you unless you can prove to her you are an economist. So don’t complain about her; just study and learn the material. She is an awesome professor and you can learn A LOT from her.
avoid her
Took her for international econ. Have no idea why she had to inject her conservative/Reagonomic Free Market Solves Everything political ideology into her lectures. Not only is the subject completely useless in explaining the rise of China for example, but also in real-life applications as well. Factor-Endowment theory anyone?
She's a really nice teacher. Her class wasn't that hard at all. Just study the material..
She is my far the worst professor I have ever had. I don't mind working hard, if fact I studied for her tests and I'm good at Econ. You cant understand her, she is mean, the class average was a 50% and she doesn't really curve. She said it was our fault and not her lack of teaching stills. I will never take her again!
Horrible. Just horrible. ECON on YouTube will teach you more than she could hope to. If you can decipher her garbled English AND get her to actually answer a question without making you feel as small as you ever have- then you are at least a candidate for superhero. Good to know some profs don't care about students' success.
I find the other comments as to Dr. Chen's accent pretty offensive, to be honest. She has an accent but speaks English very well and you understand her 99% of the time and she repeats when you ask, no problem. She is very passionate about economics and communicates the idea that you need to think about these relationships beyond memorization.
Chen is one of the most difficult professors within the department. Not just because of her accent, but because she actually challenges her students on exams. Her class consists of 3 essay-style exams and 1 project. Her exams are difficult, but if you interact with the discussions you're better for it.
ECON102 with her wasn't bad. If you sit in the back row and jerk around - you'll fail. If you sit up front and actively learn - you'll pass no problem. Always willing to help during office hours. 2 exams and 1 comprehensive final. HW is easy and on MyEconLab. This isnt a hard class, but can be if you choose to mess around.
She likes to give out A LOT of examples during her lecture to make sure that students understand the concepts. The class only gets more complicated (it builds up), so stay on top of things! Once you're behind, it's really hard to catch up.
TOO thorough. e.g. explained why she can't answer questions in class as they would take 2 min a question, but took 5 min explaining that. Spent 45 min on one concept IIRC. Teaches with printouts from book; no PP. Accent. Online HW. Exams are tough. TAs give study guides. Knowledgeable, but has poor teaching ability. Avoid if looking for an easy A.
Dr. Chen is a good professor as she challenges students to understand the basics of economics. Do not take if you are looking for an easy A. I would advise taking her only if considering becoming an ECON major. Tests are very difficult as well.
This is the only class that I did not receive an A this semester. The tests have nothing to do with homework or lectures. Read the book if you want to understand anything. Even her explanations will contradict the text. Take at your own risk.
She was really straight foward. told you everything you needed to know for the test. The class itself was really easy
Excellent! Extremely helpful! It is the easiest class I have ever taken in UNLV. It's a piece of cake. Easy A <3!
Master Chen studied the art of Shaolin Economics and she is ready to impart that information to you, if you are ready to accept it!
She's hard to understand, especially when she uses a microphone. Sometimes she moves far to quickly for me to understand with her accent.
She is the worst professor ever. very rude, she thinks she is the smartest person but she is not.She just got exams from nowhwre not from text book concepts. She confused students by going back and forth on the topics on the same chapter. She is terrible. Do not take her please. nOT WORTHY
You can buy the book, come to class, take heavy notes, do all the MyEconLab study questions and get A's on those. But when it comes to her test, they are just as foreign as she is.
ECON102 during summer. i thought she was easy to understand. i'm not sure what everyone's complaining about. she gives a lot of examples to help you understand concepts. having myeconlab was really helpful. overall, i really liked her and i even thought she was quite funny. i learned a lot and i'm glad i took her class.
She explained things pretty clear. You do have to do your work in completing the homework, but its not bad. Mainly just 4 tests which you can't take lightly but as long as you go to class and do the homework you should do fine. Just don't cheat yourself by not remembering the concepts.
I was scared going into her class after seeing her rating on here; they were right. Lein-Lein Chen is easily the worst professor I've had at UNLV. The book and online hw were the only things that helped. Perhaps Lein-Lein Chen does have a grip on economics in her head, but her knowledge is somehow lost in translation during the lectures.
I don't understand why she has such a negative rating. I found her to be very helpful and willing to further explain difficult to grasp concepts. You do have to do some homework, but that's easy. If you do the homework, come to lecture, and take good notes you'll be fine. Great instructor!
Chen is a great professor. I admit her accent can be rough at times. To be successful in the class, you must brush up on your ECON 302 knowledge, take GOOD notes, and if possible record the class for future reference. Everything that the professor puts on the tests are from her lectures. Take excellent notes, and re-write your notes the next day.
Welcome to college. She may have accent, but I never had trouble understanding her lecture. She is nice but she could be mean if you are unprepared. She genuinely cares about economics and how much you learn as a student. She's a hardcore Asian lady who teaches hardcore economics. No easy A here, only good economics.
Really hard to understand, very difficult grader. Spent my life studying for this class, but didn't do well, even though I am typically an A student. 4 Tests, all unnecessarily hard. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Summer Semester is much much easier than normal semester. Very nice and helpful instructor. Tests only on her in class material, never on textbook. Accent is very heavy so only enroll if you are good with understanding people with accents. Highly recommend the instructor if so.
I dont understand why this professor has such a bad rating. I took her during Summer 3 and she wasn't phenomenal but she definitely wasn't bad. Come to lecture every day, take good notes, and you'll do fine on the exams. She uses tons of in class examples to help explain concepts and her exams come from her lectures. Study and you'll do fine.
She's not very clear at all. She only gives two tests, a final, and a couple homework assignments so if you mess up one exam kiss your A goodbye. She doesn't post any power points for us to review. Goodluck.
GO TO CLASS. I made the mistake of skipping most of them. and I regret it. The only graded things are the two midterms and finals (+10% homework). Exams are based off lectures. She'll skip around within the chapter, so go attend to make sure you know what to skip when studying. Sit up front, you'll be better off.
Aside from her thick accent, she really goes on and on with a topic to the point where you just lose her and you're left confused. She stresses you need to know how everything works, and its true, but I don't think she does a good job at teaching that. She skips around a lot within the chapter instead of going in the powerpoint order. DONT SKIP.
This class is kinda hard to rate because the material was very interesting to me (a business student) and very understandable on a basic level, but Professor Chen is one tough tester! The exams in this course (only 3) really killed me! I got two Ds on the first two and had to get an A on the final to pass. You must Read and attend SI to pass.
Her accent is rough. She skips around in her powerpoints so it's sometimes hard to follow. If you ask a question she doesn't exactly answer it. She is a passionate about what she teaches and I think that's a good quality. Be careful though her tests are hard since they're in her words.
Don't take her if you're not good with accents. I had a hard time learning in her class and she was very unclear with many things. If you could take another economics professor you should. Dr. Chen got sick in the middle of the semester and we had 3 different subs. Their teaching styles were different but I learned a lot from them.
This class is pretty tough. You really have to put in the time and effort to get a decent grade. You need to attend class and go to SI sessions. This is not a class you can just miss and get an A. Your final grade will be a reflection of the work you put in. There is 2 tests and a final
It is true, and she will best this into you, that her tests are based on her lecture material. That being said, I needed the textbook to teach myself because her lectures can be confusing. OR you will find that she will drag out the same concept, for good reason, but you will probably tune out as I did. STUDY THE MATERIAL and you should be fine.
Her accent is strong and brash, like nails on a chalkboard. She sounds like she is shouting at you all lecture. She talks down to you if you have a question, just repeats what she said. I couldn't stand her voice or attitude so I just skipped class, read the book like a madman, and went for test days. B+. You are better off CLEPing the course.
Chen is unlike any teacher I've had; she's difficult to understand, and teaches "concepts"; no homework, 3 tests/semester, and no attendance. I recommend a different professor; this is the one class reading and extra tutors won't help.
This professor was horrible. I wouldn't recommend anyone taking her. I went to see her during office hours because I got a bad grade on the first test. She became very impatient with me and then decided herself that she wont help me anymore. she told me i had to go to the extra hours with the GA but I couldnt because i had class then. HORRIBLE!
She isn't clear in her explanations and going to her office hours doesn't help at all. She refuses to explain things and tells you to figure it out for yourself. Go to the SI sessions. The homework is very straight forward, but her tests are difficult and completely unlike the homework. I strongly recommend against taking a class with Chen.
Chen is not an efficient professor. I was excited to learn at the beginning of the semester, but she was just disappointing. There are three exams and five online homework. The online homework was really easy. I can't say the same for the exams. No notes provided or exam reviews. Do yourself a favor, don't take this class.
Took this class twice, she was the only professor available both times. I had such a hard time following her and her accent is so thick. I really tried and would get frustrated with her. She doesn't use WebCampus. Just make sure you read the chapter above all and do the online homework. Homework is similar to exams. I wish there was another teacher
This professor has an extremely thick accent and does not provide help for her students outside of class. She leaves the students to track down her TA and have the Assistant explain the lessons. Tests are based on lectures but there is no study material or notes provided on webcampus. Everything comes from her lectures. 2 Tests and 1 Exam.
International trade was a tough subject. Lectures can be tough, since she doesn't use powerpoints, she tends to ramble about non related topics. Ask tons of questions. Go to lecture, study the handouts, and do the study guides before the exams and you will be fine. 2 tests, paper, and final
You should be well prepared in micro or you will likely not do well. Her accent is not that bad, typical suburban xenophobic comments. It's college. Study. She breaks things down and it's a true upper level course. Class was 90% guys so it was a bit odd in that regard, but you will learn quite a bit. She more for the serious econ student.
The worst professor I've had in all my years at UNLV. Understanding her is very difficult, and instead of teaching in the lectures you get rambling and personal stories that do not relate to the lesson. She even admitted that her lectures aren't enough to understand the class and either was the textbook, she depends on students to self teach.
I should have read all previous ratings from this professor, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR... If you're a genius or know economics from head to toe then for all means take this class if not you will either withdraw or fail. Her accent is THICK... I don't know how she can teach... You have to rely on the textbook 100% plus the tutors at the library.
Just failed her class this Fall semester and retaking it with another professor for Spring. Thought I could make it work because the time fit my schedule but WAS WRONG. PLEASE FOR YOURSELF DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR. Unbelievably difficult to understand accent, rants on topics which do not add to lecture notes. DO NOT DO IT.
Dr. Chen covers only broad topics, and she rarely gives actual examples of problems and how to solve them. The hw was the most helpful aspect of the class. She is hard to understand due to her thick accent. But for those that can understand her, lectures help out. Exams are "choose the best answer, not just the correct one."
Professor Chen basically teaches with the powerpoints she got from the publisher of the book. She has a thick accent, which makes her lectures a bit difficult to understand. The homework will be the most helpful tool for her class, so take that seriously. Overall, her class is tolerable, if you already have some idea of how the economy works.
She has a strong accent so understanding what she says sometimes can be difficult. I thought I understand the concepts but the way she explains things is different than anything on the exams. It is basically a self study sort of class. If you are a hard core economics fanatic, take this class . But if you just want to get an A, take another prof!
Challenging to understand her accent.
You get exactly what you put into the class; there's no participation trophies. Microeconomics is not a readily intuitive subject, for many, so you seriously need to engage your mind while reading the material. Yes, you have to read, and then read. Practise online exercises. Professor Chen is a bright individual, so seize this learning opportunity.
She is knowledgeable but cannot teach it to you, probably bc her English is poor. If you can learn on yourself, you will be fine. The textbook is not mandatory but you will need to read bc like I said she can't teach, but you need the online access code or else you can't do the homework, which is probably the best tool for test studying. good luck
Prof was okay & understandable albeit w/ an accent (despite other harsh reviews). 3 exams and some hw (which isnt worth much of the grade so do well on the exams). Attend EVERY lecture! No notes/material online so its crucial. Found a PDF version of an old version of the book online. Always review & understand concepts b/c the exams are tough.
Probably the worst professor I have ever taken. She screams the lecture notes as if you should know them already. She is really hard to understand & you are basically only graded on your test scores. She also decided to make Exam 2 the Monday back from spring break. Avoid at all costs.
You would legit need the book it can teach you better than this teacher because she is hard to understand
Dr. Chen is the GOAT. That's what it is. If you aren't really passionate about Economics or Int'l biz, you prob won't be able to handle the heat. She will challenge you masterfully and you will learn. She gives great lectures, they are lively. Must read chapters before class to prepare. Test 1 (about trade models) is the hardest test of the course.
2 exams and 1 final in this class. She lectures mostly 1 chapter 1 or 2 classes. She uses powerpoints for her lecture, and each lecture or maybe each chapter she uses one slide of the whole entire powerpoint to lecture through the entire class. The only slide of powerpoint she uses is a graph, and she just gives examples of her own life situation.
Hard class and she doesn't explain well, hard to understand and only 3 tests for the entire semester
This teacher's lectures are horrible, blatantly rude to students if they answer questions wrong, she acts as if students have taken the course before. Her lectures are her yelling with broken English in front of the class and ranting on losing track of the subject on hand. She doesn't sue any online communication tools so she's hard to contact.
I feel sometimes there is no point in going to class because the things that she teaches are not on the exam. The exam is mostly based on the textbook and the things she says has nothing to do with the exam. You only get 2 exams and 1 final for your grade so there is no room for error. Constantly reminds students how her class is not mandatory
Professor Chen is very repetitive and does not clearly explain the topics in microeconomics. I attended every class lecture (except for 2), and even with that, I found her exams extremely challenging. If you want to learn about these subjects, be prepared to teach yourself using outside resources. Very difficult level 102 course; do not recommend
This is an extremely difficult course due to only 2 tests 1 Final and 5% final grade from online homework. I do not understand what shes saying at most times (literally). I only missed one lecture and even then nothing she says really helps. Do whatever you can to avoid taking this class with her as the professor please Im trying to save you Lol
Literally avoid at all costs. She doesnt allow you to take notes, the class is graded on 3 tests (5% homework) and I cant understand her. I learned as much going to class as I did not going to class.
I don't think she deserves the hate she gets. She has an accent that can be hard to get through but the content just isn't very hard. First test is on the trade models! I used YT to get a good understanding of these! The next test is much easier, normal micro economics. Plan to study outside of class, and be very specific in your answers!
The tests were nothing like the homework...
Some people talk about how heavy her accent was, but I could understand her. When she used her slides, she would review one slide only. Her class is boring. She doesn't review the tests with us. The stuff she teaches isn't even on the exam. She makes it seem like it's the student's fault if they fail. Don't take her, take someone or teach yourself.
I took her because I had no other option, I basically self-taught this class to myself. She doesn't give you the opportunity to ask questions and when she does, she replies in an ironic way. I don't think she cares if you pass or not. Also, she doesn't provide study guides which makes exams 10x harder than they should be.
Not a class i would ever take again
I would say to avoid this professor if you have the ability. She tries so hard, but she's just not good at it. She doesn't speak English very well, it's difficult to communicate with her, and her tests are HARD! You won't get an A. I'm an Econ major, but I might switch majors if it means avoiding her for future classes.
She isn't accountable for the mistakes she makes and the students end up being at fault. She claims because it's a big class she can't do anything extra to help improve people's grades but it seems like she just doesn't want to because I have other professors who have just as much students and the only difference is they actually care. Frustrating!
Professor Chen means well and is nice, but the class was very confusing and kind of all over the place. Graded by a midterm, term paper and a final, so not much wiggle room if you screw one up. Times were tough due to everything being online, but still the communication was iffy and it wasn't always clear what was expected.
Professor Chen is not a native English speaker so it is understandable that I got mixed messages in the lectures. The real problem is that when you take the exam, you have one chance at each answer. You cannot go back and review your answers before submitting.
Worst teacher at the University. Stay away. Does not record lectures and allow for opportunities to go over material on your own. You cannot go back and review answers on exams once you select an answer. She is absolutely abysmal. Terrible terrible teacher.
For someone who doesn't take attendance, she really wanted you to come to class. She's a nice lady who explains the material clearly, but she only provided four exams throughout the semester plus some vague, optional homework. It would've benefited if she provided actual homework or study guides, since I barely passed with no way to boost my grade.
The formatting of her class is so confusing. For her lectures she reads off of power point slides the whole time and then says to not rely on her power points for her exams. Her lectures are practically pointless. I do not recommend taking her. She has such a low score for a reason. I brushed it off and regretted it. Don't make the same mistake.
Lein-Lein is an absolute catastrophe to the education industry. Instructors like this deplete all of my ambition of pursuing a degree. The instructor lectures powerpoints for an hour every lecture and then tells you not rely on them at all. She tells you it is best to have multiple textbooks and then tells you to not rely on them as study material.
This course is graded by 3 exams that are nothing like what she lectures. She does not give homework so you will not know what will be on the tests. Her lectures consist of her going off on a tangent with no signs of teaching anything about economics. Come on UNLV? Is this how you want to represent your school?
Save yourself. If you have the option to take another professor then do it. If not, just don't take econ that semester. Her lectures were so useless, I ended up teaching myself the whole course. The textbook is somewhat your friend. Passed this class with an A- but that required a lot of studying from my end. If you mess up on one exam, good luck.
You cannot completely depend on this professor to hold your hand and make you understand everything throughout the lectures. It is imperative that you read the text and get a good foundational understanding before lectures. Her review before the final exam helped me to pass the final. I feel like she would teach better in person vs online.
