If you are a naive young thing, you may be tempted to think he is god & he won't correct you. Take everything he says with a grain of salt, memorize it for the test, then purge your brain, because he doesn't know what he's talking about.
I like him a lot. He's a dedicated teacher who works for free (no kidding; he doesn't get paid extra for the fourth class he teaches). He's straightforward about what he wants you to know, and while it is a lot of memorizing, it's doable, and interesting.
Great teacher. Not easy but he tells you what you need to do. Just put some effort into the class and it won't be too dificult. He gives extra credit so always ask! He goes over what will b on test, WRITE EVERYTHING down! it will appear on test. Good guy over all. Works hard; knowledgeable.
Seems hard at first. Provides study guides for exams. Lots of material to cover - but doable. He suggests study buddies - get them. You can tell he loves his job and he does it very well. Not bad to look at.
Well organized, easy to follow with his lecture outlines, test question reviews. He really knows his stuff and loves to teach. Doesn't like it if you are late. Recommend him highly.
hes really unorganized and goes off on tangents about dairy.says stuff that is simply not true at all, maybe its because hes really old school and doesn't even know hes wrong. nice guy seems like hes there to help, makes stuff harder than it is.memorize his stupid ancient facts and get it over w/
Lots of info so you better study. His classes are not for the lazy or unintelligent. He's super nice and will do anything to help. He does preach his own point of view so take heart. This is a wonderful man who spends his life turning kids into good vets. And he's hot, in that 'Dad' sort of way.
very helpful, goes out of his way for his students; cares about student's success (really), loves his job. His classes aren't easy but they are very manageable if you follow his very organized syllabus. Each class is well outlined. Get a study buddy - it really helps.
very knowledgeable in all areas of agriculture. Very helpful. Tough but fair. Someone you can talk to. He taught me how to study and to prioritize my time. Will fight for his students and his laboratory. Great experience.
Fun classes, 501 is very tough if you can memorize everything you'll be fine. Good mentor, don't trust his facts on horses. He tries to help his students as much as possible.
Too many facts that have nothing to do with the class. Too many jokes that interfere with the lecture. Doesn't stand up for his students. What he says and what he does are two different things. So much material, you would need two semesters to fully understand the class.
Makes agriculture fun. Never boring. Always cracking jokes. But class required many study hours to get an A. Some of the more advanced Pearson Squares not easy to get. Shapiro's tests often include info not given in this class. I hear you have to take all his classes before you can answer all his test Qs. Required max effort to get A on term paper.
He definately knows his stuff. The problem with him is, if you're not part of his 'groupies' then you don't matter as much.If you aren't and ask for help,he'll just say,"you just need to do this." and walk away.I just worked really hard. I liked the courses, you have to work at it.Don't take class in spring semester, you'll have to work the Farm Walk!
What you learn in this class will be of interest and benefit to you later in life. Not necessarily in the context in which it was presented to you, but of benefit nevertheless. Class material is as overwhelmingly pro-industrial animal production as it is anti-AR. Stand your ground firmly if this position does not echo your own. You're not alone.
dedicated to teaching, feels betraded by administration closing dairy. You better dedicate 4x as many hours that you spend in class studying outside of class.
Very single-minded view of animals and if you're not pre-vet, you're no-one. Offers little info on small animals. That being said, this class is basically a re-hash of Ag 501 (Animal Sci); just memorize the evaluations at the end of each section and you'll do fine. Offers extra credit.
Lectures full of propaganda against animal rights, vegetarians, vegans, & how dairy on campus was closed over 15 years ago. Misleads students into taking his non-required classes. Lies about animal neglect and abuse on campus farm while preaching ethics. Class material irrelevant or outdated to veterinary industry.
Great class filled with debates on current issues about use of animals. Allows all sorts of views to be presented so long as they are based on facts and not just hearsay. I appreciate hearing some of the "non-popular" views not presented in other classes.
Great class but wish we had a hands-on lab with it. Would really like to use the animals on campus in a real learning lab instead of just having the lecture. Lots to learn so don't miss a class. Prof is open to other points of view if you bring facts not just hearsay. Study a little every day - lots to learn in short time.
I like this class but wish he would limit the lecture to 40 students, and each lab to 20 students each like a lot of colleges do. It is extremely hard to take the lab tests tripping over other students. It's crammed and highly distracting. Other than that, if you study you are guaranteed either an A or a B.
Great guy. Won't find someone as dedicated to the school or the industry. Misunderstood by most. Loved by many. Inspirational. Difficult class but an A is attainable.
DON'T take all of the 500's series at one time like he tells u to. U'll be miserable. Overall easy just memorization. Tests are a breeze just study the questions on review. Really nice, and approachable. Hook up with previous students for a great grade! This teacher is among the few left that has a passion for his work. Take advantage of this!
I've taken several classes with him. Lots of females in his class that flirt with him-It can be embarrassing and annoying. Some of his classes are harder than others. He allows extra credit so you're pretty much guaranteed an A or B.
I was in his animal ethics class at moorpark, he's not listed as a teacher there. I think he's great. He doesn't make it clear, but you must read the entire text to do well on the final. he is really laid back, and as long as you attend, he will bump up your grade if your on the border. by the way, he is cute, I never liked mustaches until I saw o
Easy to follow. Just need to be in class on time and follow his outline. He is very helpful to students who try.
lab was hard at first, then easy. attendance is a must. the cats stink. he's cute, and i think he knows it. shoot him a few smiles and winks and he'll like you. he's helpful but only if you ask and he knows your trying. 501 is unrealistic. too much material. only 20% of class passes second test. never use expensive books! goes too fast. but cute
great guy, but talks too much about cows and large animals. class is called intro to animal science, not cow and horse science. i will never be working on these animals, so i feel like i'm wasting my time on 500 questions and terms for one test. nothing taught about small animals. should be able to choose to take or not.
It's really harder than he makes it seem...The first few weeks are so stressful, but youll get the hang of how his tests are & what he expects. He tells you exactly what you need to know, so theres no questions unexpected. Great teacher..even if his material is useless.
very cute, yes. but also a very good prof. I had to study more in his class than i have in a long time, but i could use the challenge. very approachable. highly recommend.
Dr.Shapiro is very helpful and lets you know pretty much exactly what will be on the tests but there is a lot of material to study so don't slack off. This class might be stressful if you are taking a full load but other than that I loved it. FYI he talks about cows ALOT and other animals but never mentions cats and dogs. Weird =)
What a useless tool for anyone's education! He is never willing to answer questions and couldn't care less on the progress of his students. He's not willing to put any effort into helping students, and only cripples their ambitions. He only gets students into schools that would've taken the students anyways REGARDLESS of his involvement.
Definitely consider other options; he is as arrogant as they get. Talk to any other REAL veterinarian and other faculty and they'll comment the same. He teaches useless information for getting into vet school. This class as well as most of his AREN'T EVEN REQUIRED. You'll get more out of reading any book than wasting your time going to class.
do not take him if you are not in the vet club, pre vet, or rvt student. he will not even pay attention to you if you're taking his class for a G.E requirement. I did good in his class & not once did he talk to me even when I was doing the animal farm walk I was next to him & did not bother. Nice to all the girls that are RVT students etc. Flirts w
As many others that have put it, he only pays attention to all the old women in his classes that swarm around him. Good luck trying to get his attention if youre past the first 2 rows. I thought this was ANIMAL science, not livestock. He only discusses cows (a lot!), pigs, chickens, and such. He is arrogant and kind of annoying at times. Overall ok
Lecture heavy class, but most of it runs parallel to the book. Not sure if attendance is mandatory but there are a few things that are only covered in lecture that fall on the tests. Tests cover a LOT of material, but aren't hard at all.. I never received less than an A. He is very willing to help students that show desire to learn.
I found Dr. Shapiro to be a good prof. He lets you know exactly what is going to be on the tests. You must study and read the course material, I recommend ahead of time, this really helped me. Especially in 501. 511 and 512 are pretty easy as long as you show up and 505 is a little tough cause it is at night, just show up and pay attention.
Dr.Shapiro is a gift to Pierce College & his students. He is extremely passionate about his field of study & down to earth. He wants to know that you care about your grades; the more sincere you are about your classes, the more he is willing to help. BTW girls, u don't need to flirt w/him; you just have to study to get a good grade. Tests are easy.
Professor goes out of his way for his students. He demands that you be on time, respectful to others (students and faculty both) but is fair in his presentations and grading.
Just reading through all the comments made me laugh. I am NOT a pre-vet student, NOT a groupie, did NOT flirt and sat in the BACK of the class, yet I got an A. Dr. Shapiro was always willing to answer questions and very approachable. If he sees that you are trying he is more than willing to help you! Final is pretty tough, Midterms were okay.
Professor goes out of his way for his students. He demands that you are on time for class and have respect for fellow students as well as for faculty and staff. Great motivator.
Great teacher, very likeable, classes are always fun and interesting. Yes, it's mostly livestock, but it is an AGRICULTURE course. Tests are hard, you MUST dedicate study time to do well in this course (well, all of his classes really). All in all, a good class if you're motivated !
I was very interested in this class at first. His style of teaching is a bit useless, he dictates words and their definitions. Attendance is mandatory, but he only took role twice throughout the first half of the semester. Pretty helpful. mostly just memorization, and a lot of story-telling in during class.
His classes are Not for the average person. If only there was another professor to teach the AG classes.I would always pass him up. Its a shame I have no choice but to deal with his nonsense.
Approachable and dedicated to helping his students succeed yes, but only if they're willing to sacrifice going all the way just as he is. Answers questions yes, sometimes with his personal life story but that's about it. Has a huge sense of humor and that's always a plus. Studying = More mandatory than Attendance, definitely.
suckish teacher can be decent at times, jokes are kinda old after a while, a little excentric when he's hopped up in coffee. He can be very rude over emails and is not always clear. If you ever need to talk to him its better to do it in person.I hoped for a better teacher considering all the people who talked about him positively.
He only calls on students on the Farm Team, or Officers of PreVet Club.....Has "Pet Names" for students he likes and as stated above...weird Would be nice if he would call on some fresh blood in the class instead of Kris with a K, Scuba Steve, Smart Steve,...etc...Really bad jokes told over and over and over and over again.
Absolutely LOVE HIM!! If you are a pre-vet or RVT major he will do whatever it takes to help you suceed and reach your goal of getting into vet school! He is very dedicated and knows what he is talking about. Great motivator. Has helped me alot! His classes are not easy though. They require a lot of dedication and studying. I recommend him highly.
Dr Shapiro acts likes an elite. He plays favorites, and doesn't play fair. He'll offer better grades for some people when he gives worse grades for the same work to other students. He doesn't care about your success, and even tries to keep some students from succeeding.
BEWARE! Requires alot of studying from the textbook. Not an easy grader either. Tests are hard and he requires hours working on the farm located on campus. Picks favorites, not clear on lectures, and wanders off into la-la land with useless jokes and stories that has nothing to do with leacture. Would not recommend him for any class.
I enjoyed this particular class, until he bombards you with his extreme tests. The class itself was easy to comprehend with the required hands-on experience and lab book, but besides that, he usually picks favorites without caring for the other students. Worked my butt off and still recieved a low grade. Very unsatisified.
I really like him as a teacher and person because he really cares about his students. He is truly dedicated to his profession and it really shows. As long as you are as dedicated as he is, you will succeed in his class - but it is a hard class!
His only motive is to secure funding for his farm so he gives tons of misguided advice about how to get into vet school, not informing students to take req classes (ethics v. bio). He's an arbitrary grader & gives conflicting test answers. I submitted the same paper for 2 diff classes, got 2 diff grades. This entire class is based on memorization.
Extremely difficult class for me. Buy the textbook and start to memorize all stats on all animals and breeds in book ASAP! He is a lovely person and is very passionate about animals however is a serious lecturer and test giver. My advice is to not take 501 and 511/512 in the same semester. You will thank me.
Relatively difficult class, but he gives you all the test questions in the form of fill-in-the-blanks at the end of each section. This is the easier of his classes, IMO, if you can just memorize the vocabulary at the end of each chapter you'll do great! No real comprehension is necessary. He's entertaining and interesting in this class!
This class is REALLY difficult if you don't stay on your toes for the entire semester! Fall behind before ONE exam and it will drag you down. BE SURE to get tutoring no matter how confident you are. This class is MUCH more difficult than anatomy. BE PREPARED and you will do fine. He he is sort of an ass during this class.
He is very funny!!! He tells alot of stories in class but they all seem to be relevent to the lecture. His emails are a little vague, but if you talk to him in person you will be fine. STUDY STUDY STUDY! he gives extra credit too. Not to many suprises on tests so far. I dont think he picks favorites, but he does gravitate to the students who care!!
Pretty much the best professor ever, with really silly jokes. Who ever has anything bad to say is crazy. Nice guy who wants you to succeed.
Most amazing man you will ever meet. He will do anything to help you succeed. Take advantage of his office hours and his email. Sit in the front and get on a first-name basis and you are set for Vet school.
Loves his job. great teacher. easy class if you study
He needs to retire, or we need other professors to choose from.
Amazing teacher, if you have a passion for Vet Medicine, he will teach you things that you will use all your life. Very funny, and always has something funny to say. Study study study.
Just awful. Memorize terms, the final is full of tricks, and does not care for you unless you brown-nose him. Just terrible. Picks favorites. Do not take! Wish I had another professor. :/
If you do not study, you will fail, period. All the questions are in the back of the blue book you need. On quizlet, all the answers are there. Just double check!! and study! The tests are NOT tricky. Just pay attention and study all the diagrams! If you do, you will pass, easily and wont be surprised. I loved this class.
I did not learn very much in this class. He tells way too many personal stories during lectures. You also have to do work for the Farm Walk, but it only counts for a small percentage of your overall grade. Not recommended.
I cant belive people talk bad about dr Shapiro he is a really nice guy n yes his class is hard but that's why you have to study I loved his class
AS 501 isn't hard, it's just A LOT of information. Quizzes and some midterms are online and they are very easy (answers/questions in the back chapters)Those are where you get most of your points. Farm work on the other hand is a pain. Farm leaders are never on-time they need to practice what they preach and they boss you around.
Don't take this class if this isn't needed for your major! I took it and it was the most hardest yet interesting class.I enjoyed it however it brought my grades down for my other classes since I was too busy studying for this! :(
As 511 is an amazing class. All the test questions are straight from the evaluation questions in the blue booklet you buy. He goes over A LOT and you need to pay attention and actually study. I got an A, but I worked hard for it. Whoever says this class is hard and didn't do well, means they didn't work hard enough, or care.
He gives all the answers to the tests at the end of each section, you just have to pay attention during the lecture. Make the time to study and memorize it all. If you love the veterinary field you will love the stories and jokes. Great Teacher, I'll be trying to take whatever classes he offers before he retires. Very knowledgeable.
I loved Dr Shapiro! he is so knowledgeable about everything to do with animals. He truly cares about his students and even provides study guides with all the answers to the tests!!! Use Quizlet to study and you will pass!!
I have no idea why so many people think he's great!? He does have a passion towards animals, but he is not at all helpful in email answering questions. Study and STUDY!!
Shapiro is likeable as a person, don't get me wrong but as a teacher he is just horrible. The best way to get through his classes is get lots of study buddies and go over his study guides repeatedly. He does not help. Lectures are long and boring. I found it a lot more helpful to just study the material in class than pay attention to him.
He is an ok teacher but he really makes the class impossible to pass. He tells you so much information that are so specific to different things when it is suppose to be a general animal class. Oh and good luck if you take his class in spring .You basically become a slave to farm walk having to do 10 hours. The only way to get out of it is money.
Not only does he require you to work 10 hrs Farm Walk during the Spring semester... he requires you to "donate" a GC or a check to the school farm, if you can't make the full 10 unorganized hrs. His tests are difficult b/c he has you remembering TPRs, gestation periods, estrous & whatever for the most random animals. My tip: Take him in the Fall.
BEING A COLLEGE STUDENT MEANS YOU HAVE TO STUDY. I don't understand why people say his classes are "hard." The review questions at the end of each section are the tests. STUDY. TAKE NOTES. You will pass. He's passionate about the farm and that it remains for future students- that is why there's so much emphasis and dedication on Farm Walk.
3 unit course that resembles 5 (+ farm work "lab" per week). Material isn't difficult, just memorization and lots of reading like any other class. Dr. Shapiro is a dedicated, amazing person yet makes for a frustrating instructor. Farm work "lab" is taught and supervised by fellow students who really shouldn't be in positions of authority.
Amazing person! His lectures are interesting and he keeps it lighthearted with stories/jokes. A lot of memorization.
Answers are in the back of each chapter. He says farm work is not required, but it's part of your grade. I personally don't like him as a person, but his class isn't difficult if you study the questions.
There is a lot of reading required, however if you cover all the material on the outlines you will receive a fairly easy A. If you are upfront and honest with him he is VERY easy to work with. There is a lot of expected of you (Farm work & Farm Walk), its not hard, just do it. Pre-vet majors are expected to show enthusiasm... he does notice.
People say his tests are right from the back of the book. Only his online midterms. Those are word for word the questions in the back of the chapters. In class tests? What in the world happened? Study the study guides and questions in the back of each chapter and I can't get higher than a B. I mean really... I got a 99 on both online midterms.
This is definitely a college course, requires study time, participation of farm care, but is fun and worth the effort.
Dr. Shapiro is very fair. He does demand that you show respect to the class (show up on time; show up!). He outlines the entire class, notes, tests so it is easy to master the subject if you pay attention.
He does demand that you show respect to the class (show up on time; show up!). He outlines the entire class, notes, tests so it is easy to master the subject if you pay attention.
Dr. Shapiro is a very good teacher he is hilarious and likes to tell stories. His online midterm test are literally the back questions of each chapter. Except for his 2 in class midterms just study the study guide provided. The final is 200pts and it's literally the final exam study guide. Just show up and take notes and you will pass.
Dr. Shapiro is the most ethical, friendly, humorous, knowledgeable professor I have every had (although I just began my college career).
Easy but yet challenging first semester class in the program. Follow his outline and you can get an "A" grade.
Very fair, fun, inspirational.
He is caring and out to help his students. I wish more professors cared as much as he does. That being said, he doesn't mess around. This is SCIENCE people. You will have to work for your grade. But, if you do the work, participate and come to class you will be just fine.
Fantastic Professor, gives clear outlines on what you need to learn for the class and gives you everything you need to get an A on every test. He's very easy to approach and provides clear feedback. Awesome lectures but he seems a bit biased at certain points. Overall, Great and I recommend taking him, I would take him again.
