Tests are very strightforward. But her teaching is more about her family life than from the book. I got a good grade but I feel like I didn't learn too much.

Dr. Allen does refer to her own life frequently but it is relevant to the material covered. WHen she speaks of her life it is to teach us something not to hear herself talk. She expects a lot but is a great professor. I have learned a lot.

All she did was talk about sex and how your husband will cheat on you. Her tests come straight from the study guide. And I don't even think she grades the papers..I got an A both times taking her class
She is very knowledgable. She has been appointed to the State Board of Education. If you appear to pay attention you will probably do well in her class.

She copied the tests right from the study guide pretest pages. The class is easy but she does talk alot about her family life and sex education. Good Luck! I got an A!!

You get to know her on too personal of a level
Those who keep talking about how she only talks about her life and doesn't teach out of the book are missing the point! Do you want to go to a class just to listen to a teacher read out of the book and waste time? She teaches psychology through life lessons! Great prof if you're not too dense!
I had Dr. Allen for this class and Intro to PSY and I got A's both times. I think she's got a wonderful personality. She relates stories from her very full life to concepts that she thinks we should know. Don't forget to buy the study guide. This class is an easy A if you do all of your assignments.
Absolutely can not teach
She Sucks. All she talks about is her life and sex. It should be sex ed instead of Psychology. If you can't teach it to yourself from the book, I don't suggest that you take her.
Very nice professor, however, the class was boring and very pointless at times. IF you expect to learn anything, do not take this class.
You do not learn anything from this class except how to memorize the answers to the questions from the study guide. If you think she is teaching you through life lessons, you ARE WRONG. The stories that she does tell are NOT interesting, AND you have to outline chapters that are 50 pages long.. She is BORING and I don't remember anything I learned.
I thought she was an okay teacher.She tries to teach through life lessons-The whole learn from others mistakes!As for her method of teaching,I dont think theres a problem with it at all.Shes a tough cookie,she is willing to help on the material.Overall a great expierence..I learned lot about myself and dealing with my own relationships!Smart,Quick!

A class I will definitely not forget. I was glad to have "outside the book" instruction. But, I was not happy with the reliance on the study guide for the tests.

If you expect to learn anything, dont take her class! All she talks about is how you shouldnt have sex, esp. if the person doesnt have a PhD or a doctor or w/e!, and she never talks about the chapters or anything psy. relateed. If the tests were about her i would pass it with flying colors, but since it is about stuff u never talk about- its easy to fail. Oh yeah, and you have to watch videos witht hte caption b/c she stops the movie every 5 seconds (literally) Dont get her as a teacher! PLEASE!
She didn't teach about Psychology. All she talked about was her 500 pound friend with buttons. Even her extra credit had nothing to do with the course.
Worst Professor I've ever encountered. I'm surprised she's still teaching. If you're a Psychology major- don't even think about taking her. She talked for 3 hours about nothing related to Psychology and then gives you exams on terminology and experiments done in the field. Ridiculus. If you want to fail. Take her.

She's a nice woman otherwise, but she does actually talk an awful lot. Not even about Psychology most of the time, either. If you're good at studying on your own, you may be able to survive, otherwise, talk someone else for your own good...
If you enjoy psychology and would like to end the semester having learned something you may be able to apply to other areas of school or life in general, DO NOT take Dr. Lelia Allen. If you simply do not care, however, I highly recommend you buy a comfortable pillow, earplugs, and a study guide. Have fun!
she misgraded or lost every test
This class is extemely boring and she talks about nothing. Her test are straight from the study guide if you want an easy A than take her. She just cuts and pastes from the study guide and makes you do chapter outlines. But other than that if you are a Psychology major don't take her!!!
The woman is extremely intelligent, but, her "teaching by life experiences" doesnt help the students learn much about psych. She wants her students to succeed, but by working/studying their butts off. If you ask questions, she will tell you to look at your notes and see, or remember what she said in the lecture, even if she didnt cover it.
She talks to much about her which is very boring
AS long as you show up to class, it is a very easy A. Her test come straight out of the study guide(she photocopies the test otu of the book, and the answers to the study book is in the back of the book). SO easy, it just sucks she makes yo go to class, She makes you watch alot of movies, try not to sleep in here class, it really bugs her.

All I learned about was her stupid, boring life. I didn't learn one, single thing about psychology. Yes...she's extremely easy because her tests are copied right from the study guide...but it was a pointless class and a waste of my life.
She is very interesting...i used to luv Psychology b4 taking the class....now i hate it..shez ah terrible teacher! All she does is talk about "Old Folk" & Test from the study guide (the exact questions, literally!) If your good at Memorizing, you will do fine..i can't....Don't take her class if you want your moneys worth!
Worst professor I've ever had, and I have had quite a few at my age. You will learn nothing, quite honestly.
If you want a class where you get your money's worth, you learn something, and you have a good time- then look elsewhere now! She will require you to purchase a textbook you will NEVER use, and will teach you nothing about psychology- spending the entire class talking about herself. Also EXTREAMLY rude and often talks down to students. WORST TEACHE
I got an easy A in this class. Yes, she does talk a lot about her life, but sometimes it is interesting. You only have to do 15 chapter outlines and current event write-ups (about a paragraph), really not that hard at all. You just watch videos and listen to her. There are only 3 tests (not cum.), and she will probably lose them anyway. EASY CLASS!
I loved Dr. Allen!!!! She made my day and I always looked forward to her class. If the study guide is still available for her material-buy it; you can't go wrong. It was an easy "A" when it came to the midterm and final. It was right from the book. So if you read the study guide and material, no problem.
If you want an easy A take this class. If you want to get your moneys worth and learn something do not take this class. The quality of teacher at CSM really drops with this one.
the standards for the CSM drop here. She allows students who are not registered to sit in class from past semesters that have failed. Talk about breaking the rules.
Easy and FUN! I always enjoyed Allens classes because she always talked about crazy interesting things and somehow they tied up with Psych. I liked her so much I took her for Psy1010 got an A and Psy2050 and got another A...Shes a a little crazy, but super easy and fun.
She is great teacher, she class is time consuming but its easy.
Very fun class, you can learn a lot if you think and pay attention. The book was only use for homework, which was very easy. She told lots of stories from her personal life, but these did relate to class. this is a great class if you need an easy A
Honestly, I think it's a joke that she's still hired as a teacher. If any one on the Board of Education anywhere sat in her class they'd be dumbfounded as to why she was even teaching as well. You do not learn anything... it's more like you're sitting next to someone on a bench at a bus stop and they continue to talk to you... except you're paying.
Useless class, useless teacher. She actually berated me infront of the entire class for reading my textbook instead of listening to her stupid, hour-long life story that had nothing to do with psycology. Want to save money, time, and brain cells? Don't take her class.

AVOID HER! She fusses @you about your posture/being late/drinking in class. All you do in class is watch 25yr old movies & she rants about old things that happened to her 50yrs ago. NEVER speaks of things in the text. You basically teach yourself in this class. Tests come straight from the study guide. All Multiple choice. Save yourself a headache!

I don't know how anyone could give her a good rating.The difference between Allen and professors with bad ratings on here is, they might be bad at teaching but at least they teach the subject. Allen-NOT! She speaks about completely irrelevant stories. I am astounded she still teaches. Anyone who gave her a good rating was probably just fed and A.
She is the worst professor at CSM and I will NEVER take her again. She insulted everyone the first day of class as well as insulted my parents. So if you want to be insulted I would recommend taking her class.
Worthless, good-for-nothing "teacher". I wish I had discovered this site before blindly enrolling in her class. I really am wondering why I am paying her to teach me, when all I could have done was bought the text book and taught myself. I wish I had a job where all I had to do was push the play button.
SHE IS CRAZY..but her class is really funny and easy. The only assignments we had was a "chapter outline" due every class. I literally copied the vocabulary words and definitions from the book and got A's on all of them. She also brought in the guy from the health department to give out condoms. HER CLASS IS SO EASY BUT SHE IS CRAZY AND FUNNY.

Every class you will watch a movie pertaining to a certain topic of Psychology. She does have many life stories that she talks about. Come to class on time, do your outlines, buy a study guide, and don't eat/drink. She is a nice lady that has a lot of experience, but she does not teach from the book. It is an easy class, but you can't slack off.
Im in her class now and she is very entertaining sometimes. She loves to tell stories and talk about sex and push the play button. She laughs out loud all the time for no reason. Sometimes i feel like the class is treated like children because she has lots of rules. But she is real and i like that. If you get her to like you, the class will be easy
Wow.I took in 2007 way b4 i knew about this site. However 98% of the comments on here are true. You never use the book. You watch outdated movies about pys and she talks about teenage sex,her life during the jim crow era and often talks down about peoples bad choices in life.you do outlines,newpaper reviews.she grades pass or fail.
Here is an easy A.You will be expected to type outlines for every Ch. in the book (this will be the only time you open the book).BUY THE STUDY GUIDE SHE WILL TEST YOU ON THE MULTIPLE CHOICE SECTIONS. She copys and paste the questions exactly as they are.Put some effort into it & there's your A

Professor Allen Is The Easiest Professor 2 Take for any psych class. Outlines, weekly summaries of articles an optional extra credit project to go to walter reed museum and then your exams (straight from the study guide) I suggest buying that used or borrowing it if u can cuz u wont need it much. Her lectures are pointless but mandatory. Suck it up

Useless teacher, should have take this class online. She does nothing in class but tell random stories about her life and talk about sex and show movies. I took exactly 4 pages of notes all sememster and all that was on those pages were the date and the notation that we watched a movie. We never got a critique to fill out on her teaching-why not?
I HATE THIS CLASS! I used to LOVE psych class in high school, and after taking this class I cannot stand it. She does not teach any lessons, all she does is tell stories about her life and watch youtube videos. If I could go back in time I would have stopped myself from taking this class. My opinion, Find Another Psych Teacher!!
Yeah all she does is tell all the dtails of her life, and all you do in class is watch psyc videos from the 70s, but the tests come straight from the book. The other classwork is chapter outlines and current event summaries.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE! She has got to be hands down the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Please, DON'T TAKE HER!! She will teach you nothing. She is forgetful, rude, crazy, and repetitive. She talks as if every word she says is a fact & as if she's never wrong. She makes no sense 1/2 the time. I'm telling you, DON'T TAKE HER!! THE WORST!

Awful teacher. In another world. She is nice, but teaches nothing and is incredibly work intensive. I love psy and I found myself dreading the classes. I cannot recommend her for anyone.
Loved her. She brought sunshine into the room. Teaches more than PSY. Use the study guide.
I hardly complain about teachers..however, this semester I complain all the time about Dr. Allen. She tells the same stories every class, we watch video after video. She is very exact about the structure of assignments. Also, we had a pop midterm on chapters we didn't cover yet. Worst experience ever. Save yourself while you still can!
Just remember LIFE SKILLS!!! Dr. Allen exerts lots of wisdom. You have to apply it properly in life.
Dr. Allen is truly a card! I had her in spring '11. I understand that she wants the best for her students, that's wonderful. But Dr.Allen doesn't actually teach much psychology it is pretty much independent study. Do the chapters, note cards & use the study guide (all the test come from that) and you'll pass.
I took her general psychology class back in 2005. It's sad that I still remember her. As a psychology major, she ruined my educational career. I will never get into a grad school for psychology. The only grades she recorded were the papers that you still had on you on the last day of class. I was lucky to get a D because I held on to a few things.
Horrible Teacher. She tries to explain life stories and past experiences. She treats her class as a manner and etiquette class. She is ridiculously out of line on many levels. She literaly might have taught 5 things all semester pertaining to actual psychology.Use the study guide, and do chapter outlines, and you'll pass.
Worst teacher I ever had and I say this as someone who got their BA five years ago. All the comments are true. She taught nothing, told the same stories over and over, and treated everyone in the room like infants instead of adults. She would tell students they couldn't leave or go to the bathroom.
