It's a very entertaining class, it keeps you interested! However it is not mandatory to show up. She puts all power points online, and she bases her few tests on those and the book.
I loved this professor!! She is by far my favorite. I would love to take another class with her. Her stories make the class entertaining. If you go to class and read the books you'll do great. She is good at explaining herself. I don't know why there are so many negative comments, she is great! Tests are multiple choice and simple if you listened.
Ericksen is obviously intelligent - I'd like to take a higher level psych class with her. However, there are many negative comments for 119 because you won't get anything out of this class except a good laugh at a college level cost. The feminist angle is overused, very little "psychology" is taught, and I even read the book. GUR sure, learning..no
The class isn't difficult. Tests all weigh the same and there is no cumulative final. Each test covers between 1-2 chapters. Make sure to read the chapters and not just rely on the provided slideshows because questions on the test can go into specifics not mentioned during lectures.
The material is not as interesting as I had hoped, but Ericksen is the most entertaining professor! I came to class just to hear her talk! The class is easy; just read the text and go over the slides. All the tests are multiple choice, so it is not too hard.
take her for 481 ! So easy and actually fun! she's funny and the class is super laid back! better than other 481s (so i've heard)
she's really funny. you dont really need to go, she pretty much goes over what is said in the book. definately go when there's a video. when i go its usually just because going to class is like a review of the chapters- plus lectures are pretty fun. really easy class
She was the best professor I had at WWU. Her class was so interesting and she knew how to keep us interested. She was always there to help and made herself available as needed. I recommend anyone to take any of her classes.
Seriously one of my favorite teachers here. She's easy to understand, makes jokes that are actually funny, the video's are usually pretty interesting, the tests aren't too hard, and the class is very laid back. Great Prof!
Definately one of my favorite professors. She is hilarious. The tests are relativly easy as long as you read the text, the test is multiple choice. Attendance is no mandatory but going to class is always fun because she is really funny. ALthough she basically just goes over the text it is helpful to go to class just to hear it.
I absolutely loved this class and thought Prof. Ericksen did an awesome job! She is hilarious. After having her for Psy 101, I really wanted to take this class and was so glad that I did. All powerpoints are online, so it's not a super big deal if you miss a class. The classes are entertaining though!
It was an interesting class, i just wished i would have had a different time other than 8:30 in the morning. the tests are somewhat hard if you dont study. i did not go to class but i studied off of the slides (which she reads directly off of for her lectures). however be sure to go to the video days cuz they will be on the tests!
Ericksen is a great teacher. She makes lots of jokes and tries to keep the class interesting. You do not need to buy the book or go to class to get and A just study the power points online.
Dr. Ericksen is AMAZING-- you will be blown away by her intelligence and sense of humor.
If you are going to take PSY 101 I would take it from Ericksen. 101 can be vague and dry at times because it is an overview of a very large subject, but if you take it from her you won't regret it.
she's entertaining!
Good teacher, good class (psychology of gender). She's traditional but also reasonable. She sort of has old values, but she can also relate to the younger generation well for her age. Very smart women for sure. I'd recommend the class. Tests (5) are based on lectures and movies (which she provides the notes for).
I absolutely loved her! She posts everything online so you don't have to go to class, but I never skipped because she was so entertaining. She's very blunt and to the point but REALLY nice and helpful :)
loved the class! great teacher! I never went to monday classes all she does is go over the powerpoint which is only so there is really no need. Wednesday's are movie days which are on the test on friday. very interesting class!
Probably one of the best professors you could have at Western. Entertaining and fun. The class is great. I strongly recommend her class.
My Favorite Teacher! Attendance isn't mandatory but its fun to go and hear he comments- shes very funny and tells good stories. Everything from the class is online you do not need the textbook at all
Shes very funny while teaching class
love her. i would take any class she taught
Maybe it was me, but while she was incredibly funny, if you asked an in-depth question she seemed a little taxed to give an appropriate answer. All material for tests is provided in her powerpoints (which are downloadable). Going to class is useful for entertainment... if you're looking to learn, you might as well read the book on your own.
She's not only lots of fun, but knowledgeable too. The tests are sometimes a bit unclear, but not too bad. She's hard to reach outside of class, but she is also pretty flexible and will go to extra effort to help you out if you are having trouble.
The class is super easy and you dont even have to come to class but she makes you want to come because she's so funny and makes class really interesting. i loved her if you take psych 101 take it with her.
I was very excited to take this course, and had heard good things about Ericksen. Although ultimately I found myself highly disappointing. The lectures are vague, and unhelpful. You have to glean most of the information from the textbook, and the tests contain questions about small details. Memorization is not a good way to learn. No thanks.
This class is really fun to take and worth taking. The test are based right off the power points so its easy to study. The topics you talk about are interesting and fun to learn about.
Before taking her Psych 101 class, I've heard a lot about Prof. Ericksen being a very entertaining and insightful teacher. After the 1st class, I was already convinced that all the good things I've heard about her were true. I rarely go to lectures. I just read the book and come to the days we watch documentaries. I aced all the tests except 1.
she LOVES learning and wants to inspire her students. swedish accent and hilarious stories. very smart woman. highly recommended!
She's really fun to listen to, but you don't have to go to class if you don't want to. If you read the powerpoints she posts online you can easily prepare for the tests. However, everytime I made it to class I wasn't disappointed. She's smart and sassy. I'd recommend her class to anyone interested in psychology.
She is hilarious. You don't have to go to class, but she usually lets you out almost an hour early and is really entertaining, so I go anyway. Don't really need the book, just use the power points and look up any terms from the end of them online. I have gotten an A on every test without reading the book.
She's an amazing professor and willing to help outside of class if you have questions. the class is interesting and worth it for a 5 credit class
WONDERFUL class and teacher. Prof Ericksen is hilarious. puts all her powerpoints online. going to class isn't necessary and neither is the book.. i've barely opened it all quarter. 5 exams, all multiple choice; final is not comprehensive. take this class if you want to take a fun, easy GUR!!
Very good lectures
Useless to go to class! She is funny but that doesnt help your grade. the tests are on details in the book and not really on concepts. I would never send anyone her way.
I love her!! She is an amazing professor. The class is great and extremely interesting. Everyone adores her and she explains things really well and in an entertaining way. She is definitely the best out of all the psych 101 teachers.
She is so funny and loves what she teaches!
Ericksen is so funny and she has so many psych-related stories to tell. She's a wise one.
she was a really entertaining professor and had a lot of passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter and made class fun. however, i really expected more from the sex and gender class. maybe it is just so hyped up that i was left feeling disappointed. but ericksen is fun for sure!
I really enjoyed Psych of Gender with Dr. Ericksen. She was highly entertaining. The tests are almost completely based on her Power Point slides, which are available online, but I always had an easier time understanding them if I went to the lectures. Also, go to class on documentary days because there are usually test question on them.
Very clear, easy to understand her expectations. Very helpful. Lectures are entertaining!
She was very entertaining in her lectures and most of her questions from her lecture slides and practice exams on MyPsychlab. If you study for the exams the class is easy. She does give a lot of exams.
Super fun class, she made everything very interesting. There was a test a week so keep updated with your syllabus or you might be suprised with a test. Really attractive for being older, has an infinite amount of scarves. Awesome Swedish accent
Ericksen keeps the course and her lectures very interesting, which made me want to come to class, even though it was not really necessary to get a good grade
Remindsme of my MOM! Nice, interesting, and Swedish...very good story teller. Very liberal (good thing at WWU). Knows and likes her students.
Great prof and person! Good/different style as she is from Sweden. One of the best I've had so far...along with Dr. King!
She is a wonderful professor! She gives interesting lectures that are sure to keep your attention. Her exams are relatively easy. Simple multiple choice if you run through her power points (which are on line) once or twice. Class is not really mandatory. But I do suggest you go though, because she is AWESOME!!!
She is soooo awesome. All you have to do is study the powerpoints she gives with her lectures and pay attention in class. Her lectures are awesome and she grabs your attention the first class session...she is really and truely an awesome teacher!
Dr. Eriksen is awesome! You don't need to read the book and class is not mandatory at all...but she makes it so you WANT to go! Take her for 101 also!
LOVE HER! You want to take her for any psych class you need that she teaches! Best professor ever! She is intelligent, funny, extremely kind...makes 2 hours of class fun! You can skip every lecture and still get an A. Dont get the book you don't use it. Exam material comes straight from powerpoints. You are stupid not to take her, you'll love her
1st thing u need 2 know is that her exams r NOT comprehensive. she has the ppt's posted on blackboard along with video notes. u need to show up on class days that u watch a movie. her ppt's are helpful and her lil stories r relative to the material. yes she is hilarious. there is a reason y everyone wants to take this class so sign up early
She is hilarious and really fun to listen to. Don't need to read the book or go to class, but you really should because the material is so interesting and you will be missing out on a lot of good info if you don't!
Ericksen is great! She's super funny and really knows her stuff. The tests are right off the powerpoints which she posts online so you don't really need to go to class. I would suggest that you do though because she is great to listen to. The tests are kind of hard but if you now the powerpoints really well and study and you'll be fine.
She was one of the best professors at WWU so far! I liked going to her class cause she was so funny and made class great. You don't have to use the textbook she posts all of the power points online and if you print them out and study you will do well. Make sure to do the experiment hours they are easy instead of the paper. Psych 101 was awesome :)
Dr. Erickson is a really funny down to earth proffesor, who does a great time making psychology alot of fun. She uses the text book for the entire quarter, so it is important to keep up with the reading.
Dr. Ericksen is a fantastic Psychology teacher. She knows what she is teaching and she keeps her lectures interesting by including funny stories and comments. She is very entertaining and very nice. She has tests every Friday, but they aren't hard if you study. Overall a great teacher and class. If you want to take psych, take it with Ericksen!
SUPER fun class! you learn about sex and gender all day and from a lady who just loves talking about it. Really funny and nice and willing to help. All her assignments are online if you miss them. Fabulous class!
Great teacher. She makes lectures very memorable. If you attend every lecture reading is not mandatory. Take her classes! You will learn a lot, and it is fairly easy to get a high grade
The tests are multiple choice and if you study the assigned chapters plus review the power point notes you can get a decent grade. Don't forget to do the research labs ... it beats writing a paper. She's entertaining, funny and a good teacher and I really enjoyed her class.
Ericksen is amazing! She's clear, organized, and hilarious! One of the best main campus teachers.
Very straightforward and great professor. Powerpoints are direct and clear and she always links topics with funny ancedotes. She is very well organized and there was even extra credit for a in class survey. There are online practice quizzes and in the book.Don't take pysch 101 with anyone else! An A is very attainable!
GREAT PROF. absolutely recommend. I was a little interested in the class before I took it..then I actually took the class and it inspired me. tests are straight off the powerpoints..and no need for the book at all. very funny, nice, and loves what she does. Going to class is not mandatory. take this class before it fills up!!!! A++++
loved her as a professor. really straight forward and understanding. goes right off ppts. anecdotes really help you remember the info that she teaches. and you can tell that she loves what she does. fully recommend her for anything that she teaches. she would make any psych class awesome
She was great! Easy to understand, funny, told personal stories to relate topics to real life. She was very interesting and I would love to take another one of her classes! I highly recommend her!
Hilarious woman, glad I got into her 101 class! Great anecdotes and she was clearly very experienced and well-educated. My only qualm was she sped through powerpoints sometimes-- but she posts every lecture online so coming to class was more of a want than a need, always a plus!
Ericksen is a great teacher! There is a test every week but they are pretty easy. Make sure you know the vocabulary. The book isn't necessary to pass the class because she goes over everything well in her powerpoints which are posted online. Definitely recommend her as a professor!
GREAT, I can understand why so many people rave about her now, TAKE any class from her its a must while at western
Great time! Such a charismatic representation of the material.
good, useful,
She is AWESOME. One of the funniest prof's at WWU. All of her lectures are easy to listen to and her little stories are great! It makes me want to go to class every day! Definitely take every class that she offers if you're into psychology.
You MUST study for the class. But all in all it was easier than what I've heard the other 101 classes are like. It's intersting and she makes it fun with lot's of little stories, but you have to memorize all the terms to get a good grade. The tests are MC and the final wasn't accumalitive so that was nice.
I took Erickson's psych 101 class. She is entertaining in lectures, but doesn't seem to know a lot about the topic overall and was often confusing. Her test questions often centered around things we NEVER went over in the book or in lecture. The class wasn't super hard, but it might not be the best format for really learning the subject.
i hate everyone who told me to take this class with her... don't do it...
most amazing teacher i have had at wwu to date. she is so insanely intelligent and knows what she is talking about. She cares so much for her students and is extremely understanding. Makes the class so interesting that i never missed a day. I loved her and the class! Just study for the tests and you will be fine!
Yeah it's not an easy class to get an A. Her tests are not on concepts but just random details. Her lectures are good & funny but her grading scale is ridiculous for an A.
I loved her. I only needed to attend class when she was showing a documentary, but even that was not necessary cause she posts notes on the documentary. If you read the slides and the textbook you will be fine.
Ericksen is amazing. She's a funny swedish woman, who is super classy! She knows her stuff, and makes the class easy to prepare for. Sometimes, prepping for exams or the extra credit instructions could be slightly confusing, and she can be biased, but overall class is very interesting! Get to know Ericksen if you can, she is great!
Ericksen is a great teacher, she is hilarious and likes to make a lot of sex references. Her psych101 class could also double as a parenting class, she had a lot of great advice. Dont even bother taking psych101 unless you can get Ericksen as a Professor!
Take her. Class discussions are lame, and she calls people out for using laptops and sitting in the back of the classroom, but other than her annoying babysitting, the class is really easy. also, if you dont participate, she will make note of it. dont take if you are shy or anxious. I only go to class if need be. and the reading is easy too.
She is not only a really intelligent person and great professor, but she is absolutely hilarious. Definitely makes going to class worth it.
Not sure how I feel about having to buy a non-returnable textbook I barely ever had to use for the insanely easy tests but other then that this class was great. Eriksen knows her stuff and makes it entertaining, an easy A if you go to class and study the powerpoints for tests.
Extremely well put together lectures, though they mainly are just from the text book. Based on that, attendance is not necessarily required, but I would advise towards doing so. I'm slightly irritated that we were required to buy her book which is nearly never used. Besides that, she is an all around enjoyable professor.
Ericksen is a GREAT Professor! hilarious and witty as hell. But i think you are better off reading the book than seriously attend the lectures. but make sure you attend those documentary days because they ARE on the test.
LOVED HER and the class. shes so funny. Take this class if youre looking for the GUR. Memorize her powerpoints and you will never need to show up to class or read the text book. however class is always interesting and fun so I would show up anyways
ericksen is a fantastic professor! easily the best psych 101 teacher here and shes really funny and passionate about psychology, definately take her you wont regret it!
I LOVED ERICKSEN! she was so funny and her class was very interesting. She has lots of pretty scarves. I loved her stories and you watch alot of documentaries. Tests every 2 weeks..all multiple choice. Tests were kinda hard but just study alot. ALSO DO NOT LEAVE CLASS. IF YOU ARE THERE, DO NOT MOVE FROM YOUR SEAT.she will tell you never to comeback
Dr.Ericksen was such a sweet professor. she made excellent powerpoints in class that REALLY helped while studying. She's so smart and speaks like 6 different languages. she always talks about personal life stories that relate to psych. I would highly reccomend her. She's so cute! Hint: dont ever leave during one of her lecutures, she'll get so mad!
She is super funny!
I had to work A LOT harder for this grade than I than anticipated. Lectures had great breakdowns for understanding concepts. And funny too. Worth attending. Posts all lecture material on blackboard, but for studying, USE THE BOOK and the psychportal online with practice tests helps like no other. Boosted my test grade by a whole letter!
Most of the lectures were based on her own personal opinions with no backing whatsoever. It appears that Prof. Ericksen's goal is to make women feel victimized and infallible. At times encouraging manipulating and belittling males. If you have some self respect and want to gain/maintain a healthy view of the world this class is not for you!
Ericksen was a great teacher, although her accent is sometimes hard to understand, she is a really great teacher and makes going to class fun! I didn't go to all the classes, because really all you need to do is use her lecture notes and read the book and you will ace the tests for sure. Overall, great teacher and great class!
Her lectures are really funny! I averaged around a low b on all the tests, did the extra credit, and did the research participation...got an A in the end! Out of all the psych 101 professors, I have definitely heard the best about Ericksen!
Very funny, if you are looking for straight forward lectures without hilarious sex jokes, take someone else. Very helpful, clear, and you do need to study for tests. Pay attention, and don't leave class early, she will call you out on it and embarrass you in front of everyone.
Tests were hard to study for. Attendance isnt mandatory but she randomly plays movies that are a large part of the exam so you dont want to miss them. She has an unexpectedly funny sense of humor. All office hours were inconvenient. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT PAPER
Ericksen makes the class easy for you. Just read the book and use the slides and you will get an A. There's a lot of terms to study but it's going to be that way in any Psy 101 class. She's a super fun and easy going lady. I recommend taking her Psy 119 class as well.
AWESOME! I went to class 3 times, to watch documentaries, but I later subscribed to Netflix and then watched them at home. You MUST study for the tests to do well, & it's a lot of terms, textbook definitions are key, all lectures posted online, do textbook practice quizzes online.WRITE THE EC PAPER-rounds your grade up at the end of the quarter.
Extremely hard class. Just going to class and paying attention during lectures is NOT ENOUGH to get you a good grade. The tests are very hard and have a lot that she does not talk about in class. She is a very sweet person, but not a good teacher at all. I would not recommend this class to anyone who is not interested in psychology.
Dr. Ericksen is a PHENOMENAL professor. Tests really aren't that hard, just make sure you know ALL of the vocab from the book! Also doing the extra credit essay about her book will do WONDERS for you final grade. It took mine from a B to an A. She's hilarious and is very helpful during office hours! I definitely recommend taking this class.
While the class in itself is very difficult, Ericksen is an AMAZING professor. She is hilarious and you can definitely tell she is passionate about what she does. Go to lecture (I know - its tempting to skip), take notes, read the book, and STUDYSTUDYSTUDY!!!
This class was so hard. It didn't matter that I read the book, took notes on the book, read the powerpoints, took notes on the powerpoints; I got a C on every test. I ended up just not going to lecture because she read off the slides, and I still did as well and better than those who went. She's funny, but not consistent with her test material.
I loved going to class to hear Ericksen lecture because of her quirky humor and jokes. Her class is very interesting as well as the textbook reading. Her tests are pretty straight forward unless you don't study. You MUST study for her tests or you will not end up doing well. Overall, I loved this class and I would highly recommend taking it!
Go to class and you're guaranteed to laugh! Spiced up my week, i'm even giving her a hotness factor, not for appearance, but for the extra ZING she put in my week! If you're in Psych 101 you don't have to read to book everything on the tests are on the slides! <3 Ericksen x a million
I was 1/7 students in a 280 student class to get 90% or above in this class. Prof picked question topics that were obscure. In my three years at Western, I have never had a class average of D/C. I took this class to compliment my Sociology major, and I am pretty such Soc is the only reason I got an A. Total disconnect between lecture and tests.
Ericksen's PSY 101 class was really entertaining to attend and listen to. Her quirky lectures and jokes made the class enjoyable and fun. Her tests pretty much require you to read the textbook. They are pretty much straight-forward but they can be tricky. Overall, I learned a lot from this class and I thought it was a blast!
Ericksen is brilliant. Her class is very interesting, and if the material gets a little dull, she tends to throw in a few jokes. Go to lecture, and read the book! The class is challenging, but I am very glad I took it. If you're going to take Psych 101, take it with Ericksen!!
The book and her lectures are very entertaining. However the Exams are tough so study smart! There are 5 exams and 80 MC question each.
the 5 tests she gives are very difficult. don't just study vocabulary, you have to know the concepts too. read every chapter all the way through
The class is fascinating, and Lena can be very funny. She's very laidback and personable, and the tests are WAY harder than she makes them sound. I got an A, but I knew the textbook front to back. You HAVE to do the reading. Sometimes she relies on stereotypes in her lectures and it's a little weird, but overall a good class.
I was dreading taking a summer class but Lena was so funny I loved going to class. She was entertaining, explained things well, and was very helpful. Most of the test questions come from lecture but to get an A you need to read the book. Highly recommended!
One of the best classes I've taken at WWU! Loved it. She's super nice & hilarious. As long as you go to class & do the readings, the exams are pretty easy.
Dr. Ericksen is very easy to understand and makes the class very fun!
She is hands down one of the funniest professors I've ever encountered. She made class awesome. Definitely take her course if you have the opportunity.
Lena Ericksen is a different kind of teacher (in a good way). She is passionate about what she teaches and interesting to listen times. This class is not very difficult but you must do the reading and attend class. However, Ericksen can at times be highly opinionated (my only complaint).
I was really disappointed by her. I read all these great comments on her but honestly, I don't like her at all. She isn't very funny or interesting, her 101 class has ridiculous tests, and I emailed her and got some rude responses back. Take Seversen's 101 class if you can...
Three thumbs way up.
I LOVE Dr. Eriksen! She's such a cute personality and does such a good job teaching the material. She allows extra credit by filling out the book questions and turning them it. As long as you come to class and fill out the extra credit questions you are pretty much assured an A and an absolutely entertaining experience. TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!
Ericksen is the best. The end. Oh and be sure to read the chapters. No slacking.
Dr. Ericksen knows her stuff but at times she is hard to understand and I believe that she gives us a lot more of her opinion than the facts of what will be on tests. You definitely need to read and go over slides, you could get by absolutely fine without even going to the lecture.
Ericksen is funny, but her lectures are pointless. Her tests are hard & the lectures don't help with the tests. I skipped the majority of classes (you really only need to go on documentary days) and read the textbook & power points online - got all As and Bs on the tests.
She gives 5 extensive exams, 20 online quizzes (you don't have to pass them just do them), and an extra credit assignment. If you need an easy C this is the class, if you want anything higher then that your going to need to work for it. Go to class, take notes, study well in advance, do all the quizzes, do the extra credit and you'll get an A or B.
Oh yeah and read the book! About 90% of the test questions come from the book!! (one of the reasons you don't really NEED to go to class, but going to class and taking notes on the lecture will really help you understand the material and help you get a good grade on the test)
She is an awesome prof. Every psych student should take at least one of her classes. For 330 we analyzed fairy tales using developmental theories as a take home test. You also watch documentaries every Friday and write a short reaction on it. She is a fairly easy grader and tells great stories. She also loves Game of Thrones!
She's the best!!!
Lena is great! I love her personality, however we had a lot of tests in this class. If you are not a good test taker like me then you will do poorly because there is only one other assignment which is worth 20 points. IT'S ROUGH!
Very funny lady, class time not used to teach, she just uses it to review word for word the reading assignments
Mrs. Erickson is very knowledgeable about the subject, it is easy to tell that it is her passion. This makes learning in her class more beneficial
Ericksen is by far my favorite professor at WWU. If you get the chance take her!!! If you pay attention in class you won't need to read the book, and she makes lectures super interesting. She has the best sense of humor and makes class very interesting.
Dr. Ericksen is really funny and knows her stuff but you could tell she wasn't too interested in teaching Psych 101. Class was a little boring sometimes. Tests were really hard and average grade was a D!! Your entire grade was based on your tests and she DOESN'T CURVE like every other PSY101 prof. I would try to get a different prof for this class.
One of my favourite professors, make sure that you do the readings and attend as usual. Not that difficult, but you sure learn and hear about a lot of interesting things through the course of the class about historical people.
Worst instructor I have had here. She is cute with her accent and her little remarks, but when you start studying for the first test you will realize you didn't learn anything. There are documentary days, which are fun and required, but other than those, just read the book and glance over slides. Or just take this class from someone else.
Her tests are fair and based mostly on lectures, the content is very interesting also. She is super cute and entertaining, I would recommend it to anyone.
The lectures were pointless to go to because she reads, word for word, right off her slides that she posts on psych portal. The average grade for her class is a C or lower and her tests are difficult. If you are someone who doesn't like professors with accents then do not take Lena because she can be hard to understand sometimes.
She is all around a wonderful human. Her class is easy, it just requires a LOT of studying. She's a great teacher, very funny, and very helpful. My favorite I've had at WWU so far. Just be ready to spend lots of time memorizing vocab and re-reading the book if you want to do well in her class. Couldnt recommend her any more though. #nomenclature
Probably easiest in a class not based on tests. She does not like the grading system. Read your chapter sections, watch the videos, and think about the material - you will get the points. Weekly short papers and a final paper required, but she just looks for critical thinking and exploration of the topic -- pretty easy. And very funny too :)
Lena is a great teacher. Very funny. She does move very quickly through the material. The tests are pretty hard so you should definitely read the chapters and study in advance. The information was useful so it didn't seem pointless while learning it. I would recommend this class!
Everyone in the world should take at least one class from this woman! I gave a 4 for easiness because it really depends on what you consider easy. It's a lot of work but you learn a lot and it's not impossible.
She is fantastic! Absolutely hilarious and a great person all around. Everyone should take the class, it is very interesting.
Really fun in lectures. Will crack a lot of jokes, sometimes inappropriate. Will show a lot of videos because she believe in letting us see the application of what we're learning. Can easily ace tests if you read the textbooks. There are vocabs that needs to be learned, but super fun class. Will definitely recommend her class to others.
She's super helpful, but you have to stay up to date on the information being lecture or you won't pass.
Lena is a wonderful lady and adds hilarious spunk to the class. However, if you're looking for an in depth class about psychology this is not it. It's a quick intro to every aspect of psychology and that can be overwhelming. It's a class focused mainly on memorization and studying. Tests are hard. You don't have to go to class. Read the book.
The lectures are long and don't need to be attended, but she makes them a lot of fun! Doing the required research participation and the online assignments really boost your grade. I got a 79% average on quizzes and with the research and online work it boosted my grade to an A. She is really funny and tries to make the class interesting. Take her!
Ms. Ericksen is the best. Her lectures are kinda long but you watch a movie for half of it. the tests are straight forward and she wants people to get involved in the lecture. Also send her coll stuff pertaining to the class and you might get extra credit.
Her lectures can run a bit long sometimes, but you always get out early. Don't have to attend class because she puts her slides online, however she makes them interesting with anecdotes (plus she is super hilarious!). She is also really kind and extremely understanding. Would totally take another one of her classes!
At first her accent is a little difficult to get through but after like 2 lectures, if you really listen, it's fine. She's very specific and gives personal stories to help you relate to the topics, which are very helpful if you have trouble grasping the concepts. She's very kind and always has great TA's.
After attending the first week of lecture, I realized that they weren't necessary for the exams. Her slides come directly from the textbook so READ. I suggest reading the chapters and going over her slides to study. Although her lectures aren't helpful, the experience is worth it. Her spunky attitude and personality makes psych actually enjoyable!
Her information on sexuality is pretty outdated, especially related to LGBTQ areas. Has a hard time using gender neutral pronouns. Thinks all transgendered people are intersex and refers to them as such constantly. Thinks women have more power than men. Be prepared for false information as you'll be tested on it. Highly recommend reading the book.
she's a great professor if you try and she is very understanding and helpful if you just talk to her. she want you to do good in her class and will try and help you do so but you have to take charge and go looking for help sooner rather than latter.
She gives you way more information than you would expect. Very descriptive on the materiel. There will not be a point where you are left confused. She is a very interesting lady, it makes class actually funny.
She doesn't respond to emails and she hates computers, even if you're really just taking notes. Whole class is taught by student presentations and videos. That being said, she's interesting when she does speak, and seems knowlegable. Graded on 10 short weekly papers and presentations and one bigger, but not huge, final paper.
Good for 101. Her lectures on the text are unimportant. You can read the book and get the same info. Go for the documentaries or watch them at home. She does test on the documentaries so watch them somehow. Easy class for me. If you don't go to lecture, better like reading. Overall, she's clear, but I never went to class so I don't have much to say
Wow, I don't know about any freshman taking this class, but for me it was the easiest class I've ever taken at WWU. I'm proud to say I only attended class 2 days, once for the midterm and once for the final. The content was biased and clearly takes a leftist approach towards gender(Lena co-wrote the textbook). slides+textbook you should be fine
Professor Ericksen is AMAZING!! Her psychology 101 class is such an interesting class. It's hard, but so worth it. You can probably get a C if you go to all the lectures and don't read, but if you read everything is way easier. She gives plenty of extra credit and is always available to talk and help!
Ericksen is the best. Her lectures are hilarious and informative, and I learned more in the two classes I took from her than I did during my entire 4 years of GUR courses elsewhere in the school. Her classes fill up fast, so it's hard to get in, but it's absolutely worth the effort to try. Her Psych of Gender class will change your world.
She's a wonderful person and she is very interesting, but I haven't really learned much.... Her psychology of gender class is really not a psychology class. Interesting, but it shouldn't be characterized as psych. She pretty much just drag things on and on when there's really nothing informative to say on the topic.
I showed up to class the first few weeks then stopped going, not because she's a bad teacher but the class was ridiculously easy. Overall I would say she went on a lot of tangents but it was a fun class and an easy A.
Professor Ericksen is amazing. Her lectures, though long, never get boring and even if you do doze off during one she posts all the powerpoints on Canvas so it is easy to see and review for tests. She is completely relatable and I find myself laughing at several of her comments every class. For any class she teaches, I would recommend her above all
Dr. Ericksen's class is exactly how much work it should be. You're only graded on the exams and online quizzes but you learn a ton! The powerpoints and textbook material lines up perfectly so you're never confused on whats on the exam. I always looked forward to her class because of her sense of humor! She is great!
SO funny, found myself really wanting to come to class even though its really easy material and attendance isn't required. Favorite teacher I have had in all of my life.
I LOVE Dr. Ericksen! She is so funny and she makes long lectures easy to sit through. Some of her tests are a bit abstract, asking for random quotes from people but most of it was very straight forward. Most of the class info is on the slides but it helps to actually show up. I would highly recommend taking this class.
All lectures are online, most documentaries you can find online. Stopped going to class after the first test and actually did better on the tests after that. Make sure to read the textbook and do the online quizzes. The games in the online textbook help A TON. Basically a huge vocab class, but fairly interesting. Lena is funny and a good person.
She is not only absolutely hilarious but she is incredibly understanding and very respectful and nice. There are 12 quizzes online which are pretty easy, and 1 midterm and the final in class which are 100 questions each. The class is interesting and fun. I didn't use the book as much but she goes over much of it in class since she was an editor.
She is so funny and sweet and her lectures are never boring! She also posts all of the slides online so attendance is definitely not mandatory. The online quizzes are so easy but her midterm and finals are pretty tough. You definitely need to study for them. But other than those the class was a breeze.
Go to class, but you dont have to. Long lectures, and online homework. New book purchase required.
Dr. Ericksen was certainly one of my favorite professors in college so far. She covers everything you need to know in lecture and she is hilarious so you'll never be bored. As long as you read and cover the material she goes over in class, you will do fine on the exams.
Lena isn't a bad professor, she is funny but the class is two hours long.. And it isn't a psych class honestly. It's barley a sociology class, it should have it's own classification. Tests suck cause the whole class is opinionated, so it tests your knowledge of how well you know the teacher. The homework is easy and counts for more than one test.
I don't know much about Dr. Ericksen as I only attended 3 classes the whole quarter, but she seemed to care about her students. The class itself is very easy, and takes minimal effort. Textbook is required as you must buy it new to get a code required for weekly quizzes. Grades are based on 2 tests and 12 online quizzes. Easy if you study a bit.
She is a hoot. Always has something funny to say even unintentionally. Summer 481 was a breeze. Class was documentaries and student mini-presentations/discussions. She doesn't like testing so our final was a discussion at a Mexican restaurant. Attendance, weekly papers, final paper, and final 'exam' was what was graded, at least for summer.
She's absolutely awesome and will relate to anyone in the classroom in some manner. Best lectures at wwu, in my opinion.
She is awesome! loved this class and just listening to her speak!
She is almost 70 years old as of right now and is absolutely hilarious. She'd make Betty White blush. Her accent can be a bit strong sometimes, but she's overall a gem. She goes out for weekly lunches with interested students and that's a great time to get a one-on-one. There's even a facebook group for lunch-goers.
She's hilarious. But the homework load for a 101 class is too much. Three quizzes 75 questions a piece in a span of a little less than two weeks along with the three chapters of reading to go along with it and a test after you finish that. Not only that but her lectures are minimally helpful at best. Don't take unless you want to be a psych major.
Amazing professor that keeps the class engaged and fun. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I was always looking forward to the class. Textbook is mandatory for the access code to do online quizzes, but you don't have to read the book. Graded on few things, but as long as you pay attention and take good notes in the lectures, you'll do well.
I took Lena's class on Psychology of Gender, while Lena seems passionate about the subject the class overall is extremely dated. Her course consisted of watching a lot of documentaries about gender & sexuality that were all from the 80s & 90s. Also she would make jokes that were sexist towards both men & women which is weird considering the subject
Dr Ericksen, quite frankly, just kinda makes things up all the time. She frequently makes (vaguely sexist) claims that aren't true, and clearly hasn't done continuing education to stay up to date on her field. In addition, a final paper is written on a term she came up with in a book and that isn't used in psychology at large in a psych 101 class.
At first I had trouble with her accent but now its no problem. Exam every other friday, but as long as you memorize the terms you will do fine even if you don't read the chapters. No homework but one paper on her own book, which I think is dumb but whatever. She's hilariously honest and wildly entertaining. I laugh out loud every lecture.
I liked her lectures but grades were only based on a few things
Really great professor, she's super funny and you can tell she cares about what she is teaching. Lectures can get a little repetitive at times and both classes I've taken with her you have to read the text book and do online quizzes for each chapter but the good thing is her tests draw from the online quizzes so just study those answers mostly.
Lena is a really intriguing professor who loves learning above all else & is absolutely fascinated by younger generations & how we see the world. She has gone to school all over Europe & U.S., worked, and taught in many fields. Incredible individual. Some people deserve to live forever, and she's one of them.
Lena is a great person! She is really funny, entertaining and she knows her stuff. Pay 119 is a really interesting class, two exams, have to do research, online quiz are not bad at all! If you have the chance to take a class with Lena, do it!
So. Dr. Ericken is a super cool gal; spunky and interesting. However, her huge lecture classes are not exactly enjoyable. There were numerous tests, terrible PBS documentaries, and no connection between student and prof. She is a great prof, but does not explain any book work, so READ the TEXTBOOK!
Most of class consists of her telling the class how she is a good person while everybody else is (racist/sexist/ageist/fatfobic/doesn't help homeless people) The rest of the class is her reading from the powerpoint and watching dull documentaries. We get tests every two weeks and the final paper is on some topic i'm pretty sure she madeup herself
this class is kinda easy. you dont really have to go to class to pass and the quizzes are online but the textbook is MANDATORY you need the access code to take the quizzes but every answer is on quizlet. midterm i got a B but didnt study for the final and got a D but still got B overall so its gucci.
She tests you on personal anecdotes and on the movies she shows in class. You have to read heavily and she tests you on small, minor things from the chapters. You need the access code for this class so buy the book new. Overall, did not like her, wouldn't take again, wouldn't recommend.
Ericksen is hilarious in her lectures. This class is an easy GUR and I actually learned a lot of interesting things about human behavior from various perspectives. The class is graded on the midterm, final, online quizzes (very easy) and research participation. Go to class and you will do well on the tests.
For being a 101 class, Ericksen ensures that people will not do very well in her class. The tests are much harder and more in depth than the content she lectures on, you have to do a hefty amount of reading, and she consistently brags about how good of a person she is and how terrible everyone else is. Would recommend staying away from this course.
Pretty cool professor. Yes, she does give multiple choice exams and they are the majority of your grade. The exams are based on your textbook and a program called Launchpad, which is where you will take practice quizzes (you earn credit just for attempting it). Overall, compared to a lot of teachers on campus, she wants her students to do well.
She isn't afraid to speak her mind. No phones but who needs your phone when you have such an amazing speaker to listen to. Very passionate about her work and very helpful.
Lectures consist of her reading slides word for work, bad memes, and outdated documentaries. You won't learn much, but it's not the worst GUR you could take.
Lena is great and the class was very enjoyable and interesting. There is a lot of vocab and notes to memorize for the tests which are very difficult. Overall, it is a class worth taking.
Lena is such an amazing professor, she has a lot of material to cover in lectures but she keeps your attention because she is just so hilarious! lectures are split up with a documentary every week which is a nice break from taking notes. class has an exam every other week and final is non cumulative. there is a practice test for exam with same ?s
Dr. Erickson gives tests that are way too in-depth compared to the amount of material she covers in class. She also has little respect for students and never responds to emails. She also rarely has office hours and is very rude when asked simple/normal questions regarding the class.
She makes you buy the textbook that she wrote herself and you can only buy it new because you need the online code. She doesn't know how to use canvas. The tests are highly specific about lecture slides. But for sure easiest college class ive ever taken.
This class was without a doubt the worst class I have ever taken, not only in college but in my academic career. Claims are frequently made with no credible research. Indeed, much of the content is either Lena's opinion, based on 20-year old videos or simply made up. Lena's efforts to be humorous are also highly counterproductive to her pedagogy...
SUPER easy class. My biggest issue is that the book is mandatory and you need to purchase it for an access code. All lectures are online and essentially common knowledge. I recommend this class for freshmen looking for an easy A, not upper division students because it is a waste of time for them.
Hands down one of the best teachers at Western. She makes the class so enjoyable and always has funny/quality comments to add. She really cares that you learn more than grading you on little details. You do have weekly readings, but the book is fun and interesting.
An easy class & ok if you don't know much about gender/sexuality. Essentialist ideal heavy & ignorantly disrespectful to the LBTQIA+ community, especially during the section on the Trans community. Wrote the textbook used in class have to buy it new because all quizzes are taken through Launchpad. Went to class for the midterm & final only.
Outdated material, nonsensical lectures. We literally had a class where we listened to Slow Hand by the Pointer Sisters and Cant Get No (Satisfaction) by The Rolling Stonesapropos of nothing. She also uses the term transsexual, which is YEARS out of date. If youre teaching a class, you should know more than your students.
Her lectures are long and requires lots of reading in order to learn all of the material she will cover on the exam she has every 2 weeks. But, it was one of the easiest classes I took this quarter. Requires effort and honestly, the class is fun and you can skip the class if you need to because she posts the lectures on canvas.
I loved her
Dr. Ericksen is very knowledgeable and cares deeply about psychology. She is not afraid to speak her mind and knows what she is talking about. However, you really need to read the chapters to do well on tests and take the online practice quizzes because most test questions come from them. She does tend to simply read off her slides sometimes.
Use LaunchPad as much as possible as a lot of test questions are taken from there. The entire class is just reading the textbook (if you don't read, you will fail) and the lectures re-state what you read. It's fine to miss class as long as you look at the lectures (which are all online) She's funny and the classes are enjoyable.
She is extremely funny and caring. Not a lot of work in the class. The tests are 100 questions all multiple choice.
Dr. Ericksen is a strong teacher. She has some outdated terms (for example: "transsexual", misgendering trans people accidentally) but in general she is working hard to teach her students and to be respectful. Some of what she teaches is outdated, but a strong intro class to Psych. Textbook is required because of a special code to LaunchPad.
I see many SJW's complaining of her old use of English (shes in her 70's), yet shes from a foreign country and is fluent is several languages, you cannot dispute her intelligence. She has a great sense of humor and as i said, if you like scientifically based research take this class. Learning from an enthusiastic, genuine, p.h.d was a privilege.
shes really funny and with the times
she's great
Very vulgar Professor, especially for a family friendly class, she talks a lot about material that goes far beyond psychology, the class mainly consists of multiple choice tests that draw from her lectures, documentaries, the book, and launchpad, not really any proficient way to study, also in class she goes on rants about how she views the world.
Dr. Erickson makes lectures fun and easy to listen to, but they seem unnecessary. All of the exams are based off the textbook, so going to class when theres no documentaries or tests is kind of pointless. You do have to write two 3 page papers, but they weren't hard, and were graded very leniently. Overall, I did enjoy her as a teacher.
One thing that I didn't like about this lecture class was that the class seems to be heavily test based. I would have done better if there were more assignments. But besides the 2 point participation launchpad quizzes, 20 point participation, and 30 point research paper, there really wasn't much you could do if you're not a strong test taker.
Everyone seems to take her deathly seriously. Psych 119 is a lighthearted gender studies class with some interesting content. NO it isn't the most serious class. YES you have to buy the text book. The class is an easy GUR and the professor is a very kind lady that cares about her students. Feel free to ignore the SJWs that claim she is offensive
Lena is the og bad ass of WWU. 10/10 recommend
The Psych 101 class I took had 250 people, but Lena did the best possible job at teaching all of us. A lot of the out-of-class work was done by TAs, so she wasn't always available. The tests were all multiple choice and had most of the same questions as the practice tests, so study up and you'll be fine. She is also a pretty amazing person.
Really takes the time to make sure we understand the concepts. Great professor
Her lecture powerpoints are not helpful, usually defining the same words over and over again, with different definitions. All of the exam questions are pulled from the textbook or launchpad, so don't waste your time sitting in lecture listening to her ramble off on tangents. If you read each chapter from the textbook and take notes, you'll do fine.
for a gender psychology class this was the most sexist class I have taken. You expect more from this university. I questioned her opinions that were "facts" and now I don't get called on. She only teaches heteronormitive ideals, and makes wild claims that you will be tested on. We barely talk about psych of gender in the second half of the quarter
All of the tests are exactly what happens online so prepare to study those.
This class is extremely book heavy. You will not pass without reading the material in depth in the book. Quizlet will become your best friend and save your life. The lectures are not terribly necessary most of the content lies within the reading.
I had such a great time in this class. Was a great introduction to my freshman year, and a good first lecture class. Be warned that this isn't an easy class, but it's worth attending for Dr. Eriksen alone. She's awesome, smart, and incredibly witty. She knows what she's doing. Would highly recommend, but my advice is read the book.
Her lectures are AMAZING. Honestly. She is very interesting and humorous. BUT IF YOU WANT AN EASY A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. A lot of questions on her exams have nothing to do with the textbook or her lectures, and if you ask to go over a test she suddenly can't find it or puts off your meeting for so long it's not worth it.
PSY116 with Jim Ghram is a better-more comprehensive class that you'll actually learn stuff in. She reads whats on her powerpoint which is basically whats in the book. She co-wrote the textbook so read that because the tests get weirdly specific with quotes and stuff. This class isn't an easy A unless you read the textbook thoroughly
Felt like i was being tested on her opinions. Overall nice, but i rarely ever went to class because i felt like it was a waste of time. Barely studied for the tests and got a D. If you look up the quizzes on quizlet and study for the tests for at least 2-3 good hours you'll get a B
I took this class for an easy GUR. You dont really need to go to class. You are graded on easy quizzes online, easy research participation (just take an online quiz) and two tests that I didnt really study for and got an 80 and a 77. Her questions are super biased. I needed with an 85 and I slept in class almost every day.
Lena is apparently someone you either love or you dislike. I loved her and found her hilarious. Sure, she speaks from an existentialist point of view occasionally, but that's science. If you are easily offended, then I do not recommend her. Everything out of her mouth is taboo and It's great. Textbook is required and there are only 2 exams.
She's a good professor and she makes lectures engaging, but her tests are nothing like what she teaches and are worded so weirdly, which makes passing a lot more difficult than it should be.
here is your warning: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! It is pointless and does not even assess you on psych of gender. Exams are completely unrelated to lecture so don't even bother going.
Her tests include virtually nothing that her lectures include, are worded so weirdly and are entirely opinion, which make her class way harder to do well in than it. You have to buy her textbook (which she cowrote) but you don't have to read a word of it, the only reason you need it is for the launchpad; which you WILL use.
Her lectures have little structure- some students even had to ask her how her slides were related to the class (ex. The slides on trolls and elves.) Much of her lecture is opinion presented as fact. I was very interested in gender studies, but if you are looking for a careful & in-depth review of gender, I do NOT recommend this class.
Lena is a really interesting lady and is super funny. Lectures can be a mixed bag. It sounds like shes changed the class up and updated lectures with correct information since last school year. Tests are really weird and only half of the lecture info is on there. Coming to class does help your grade but you can probably miss a few days.
So, I showed up maybe 6 or 7 times total to this class and I'm on track to get a B. There's two tests and online homework and that is all that you're graded on. Lectures are pretty boring and not super worthwhile; the slides are posted online. Also, for teaching a psychology of gender class, Lena is woke for like a 2004 standard at best.
This class is very easy. I've only showed up for the first test, and the final. Quizzes are online, and through launchpad. Tests are in-lecture, and consist of 100 MC questions. I didn't like Lena at all. She never cited sources for lecture, and teaches some outdated material. Overall she made a good class, terrible. Cannot stand her.
Took this class because fellow students recommended her to me, and it was a complete mistake. Lectures were half opinion and half info straight from the textbook (that she co-wrote and we had to buy new). She wouldn't back claims with evidence and most of the info we were presented with was entirely irrelevant to the subject of the class.
I did not love Lena's class. I found that it wasn't that important to go to her class because nothing she really talked about was that great. She is amazing and very funny but this class just wasn't great. she reads word for word off her powerpoint then posts them on canvas. The tests are pretty hard if you go to class or not.
Lena Erickson is by far the best professor I've taken at Western. She is respected and so knowledgable. I kept apologizing because of all the questions I asked her and she gave me a whole speech on why I shouldnt apologize. She uses accurate definitions for the LGBTIQ community so I'm not sure why some people get offended. Best Professor ever.
Lena is knowledgeable and one of my favorite professors Ive had at western. She is engaging, explains the material very well, and I looked forward to going to class. She is very respectful of all views, but sadly some people decide to be so overly sensitive and take a lot of what she says as an insult to whatever they identify as.
This class was pretty easy and I have nothing against Lena as a person but so much of what she teaches and presents in class is either extremely outdated, not even relevant to the class, or outright incorrect. When students attempt to challenge her she is extremely dismissive. Makes attempts to be inclusive but is not successful.
She is so terrible. Some people love her but it might just be because she's an old swedish lady who tells sexist jokes. Somehow the lectures always ended up being about how great she is (and often how terrible the rest of society is). You have to write a paper on a thing she made up and there's a question on the final about her kid.
She's goes through slides way too fast and the only thing graded is the exams. They are all 100 questions. Not an easy class for a 101.
This was a difficult class, but Lena was like the grandma anyone could have ever wanted. She told us real stories, made going to class fun, and is the sweetest woman Ive ever met. As long as you really learn the homework, youll pass the class! None of the exams are cumulative.
I really disliked Ericksen, her lectures are pretty pointless & insufferable regurgitations of the textbook. She had us read a completely irrelevant book she wrote & in my essay I cited studies that were contrary to what she portrayed in the book so she marked me down for it. I guess she just wants us to essentially write a good review for her book
I rated this class a 5 as "hardest thing I've ever done" not due to the material (that's not relevant/up to date) but because of sitting through her lectures. Requires her OWN new $80 book + code that is literally otherwise $3 on amazon. Tests are 100Q & impossible to study for due to the fact her lectures are verbatim from slides ab. mythology...
I took Psych of Gender with Dr. Ericksen. She tries to be funny to break through the awkwardness of some of the topics, but it simply distracts from the points she's trying to teach. Studying for exams is hard because you don't actually know what you're supposed to be learning. Easy content, but sitting through her lectures is nearly unbearable.
I didn't realize anyone could NOT love prof eriksen, she's so funny and tells it like it is. I guess if you're easily offended don't take her? I found her to be a teacher who clearly cares for her students and people in general and has an appreciation for diversity. She is accepting and uses up to date termonology. She is extremely knowledgable.
She does read her slides word for word and also posts them on canvas, coming to class is kind of pointless unless you want to listen to her babble for almost 2 hours, and laugh a few times. There are 2 100 point mc exams and you get graded on launchpad quizzes that you take at home. Buy the book new, it has a code that can only be used once!
Lena is an interesting one. If you actually want to learn stuff on this subject, dont take this class. a lot of her information is inaccurate (ex believing intersex and trans are the same) and she constantly misgenders trans people. She likes to only talk about hereto couples too. Shes very funny though, study for tests and youll do fine.
Dr. Ericksen is a lovely professor. She is very funny, respectful, and engages the entire class. Her lectures are exactly what her powerpoint and the book is, but she adds in interesting parts. Coming to class is exciting! You can tell that she deeply cares for her students, diversity, and just people in general. 10/10 would recommend.
prof ericksen was so nice i struggled on the first few quizzes and she told me how to study and I started doing so much better on them. She is a very kind and understading. Make sure to read the chapters in the book before taking the online quizzes and youll do great on them
Lena Ericksen is one of the most awful professors I have ever encountered. First off, she teaches blatantly incorrect information. She has incorrect definitions of sexualities, and she has incredibly offensive memes peppered throughout her presentations including one misgendering a trans person. She also tried to deny me disability services.
I had Lena for my first seminar. She's very relaxed and doesn't care a lot about grades. She's Swedish and has a bit of an accent. She's a wholesome lady and she's passionate about the history she was teaching us. We had some short response papers (8 for the whole quarter) and then one big final paper. No tests!
I don't know why Ericksen has such bad reviews. I really enjoyed her lectures, they were entertaining. Easy class if you put in time studying for the tests. Not necessary to go to class bc she posts slides but I enjoyed going and hearing her side stories. No homework other than online quizzes that take 5 mins. Not a time consuming class whatsoever.
I've seen people say that those who don't like her are just sensitive, but that's just not the case. She teaches blatantly incorrect and outdated information. A real question on an exam was "what norse god is tuesday named after". Literally nothing to do with gender OR psych at all. There's a quizlet for every online quiz though. No need to show up
Lenas class was outdated and extremely opinionated, but if you were a queer questioning kid in 2012 her material will make a lot of sense to you. Shes so funny though
Lena uses a teaching format for gender 100% made of opinions formed in 2012. So, if you were a questioning queer in 2012, no need to read the textbook. You do have to buy it to get access to the launchpad quizzes, but because she's been teaching the same material for 8 years, all the quizzes answers are online. She doesn't know how to teach.
One really big problem I had with this teacher is her biases. She had us purchase a book that I think was written by one of her family members and she edited it. We had to pay for it brand new fro and we did not even need the paper copy, we only needed the launchpad code. I really really don't appreciate that or the biases written within the book.
She seems nice and all but beware the textbook. I had to explain why the theory of evolution was a social construct. It is expensive as well. Also note I had her during quarantine. Class was asynchronous with no prerecorded lecture either. It was all documentaries and textbook reading. I'm trying not to judge her too hard but yall should know this.
The class was online due to COVID, and every week there was a short paper and 10 question quiz due. I assume she adjusted it to be easier which I appreciated. Ericksen wasn't a tough grader- her rubrics were clear and I received full points for everything. Overall, it was an enjoyable class.
Tips for PSY 481 with Ericksen, the syllabus might not be up to date, but the assignments will have the rubric and what needs to be read on there. Easy A class if you find writing summaries about chapters easy (just one page/chapter) and she would give you a week to complete three assignments! Class was flexible during COVID-19.
I would strongly recommend taking psych courses with another professor.
Psych 481 online due to COVID is an easy A. Two or three short "summaries" a week, based on chapters from the book or a documentary. Professor gives good feedback and is an easy grader.
She never made announcements or updated any of her canvas outlines for due dates. I had to figure out everything for myself
As a senior about to graduate, this is quite possibly the easiest psychology class I've ever taken. All you have to do is 2-3 summaries a week regarding the chapters in the textbook and some videos. Sometimes I would even wait until the day they were due to do them. Lena is super communicative and always gives great feedback. Would recommend!
Dr. Ericksen is a great professor which is why I chose to take this seminar with her, but this class was completely self-taught which makes you question what you're paying for, you write 3 short papers a week based on textbook readings & she gives minimum cut & paste feedback, this class was an easy A but I was disappointed with the format of it.
The very first assignment was, "Write a short paper about Paradigm Shifts. Look up Paradigm Shift by Googling Thomas Kuhn. Youll find all the information you need there" and it set the tone for the whole class. It was online due to COVID but it was literally watching a video and read a part of two chapters and write some paragraphs about each.
I recommend anyone who takes this Lena for class to go to TikTok, look up @yoursuperleftistfriend and look at her video on Lena's reactions to disability, and then compare it to the other comments on this site (I can't post the link sadly). Worst teacher ever. Disgusting excuse for a psychology professor.
There is a reason they are getting rid of this class. The class was asynchronous. 3 papers a week, 2 of them on a very dry, boring book and 1 on a video. Basically, if you read the book and look up the video transcripts, you pass. I would say avoid taking the class but they are getting rid of it. Waste of time and tuition.
The class was super hard to get through. Majority of the class is just her reading directly off of the slides for 2 hours- about 40% of it being off topic and slightly uncomfortable. Launchpad is super tedious, but if you memorize the answers from the quizzes, you'll ace the tests. She's a great person, but be warned about the lectures.
Grade is based on attendance (checked randomly), exams, video reflection papers, and Launchpad practice exams. Be warned, Launchpad is graded on accuracy and not completion for 1st attempts - so take them slow and look up answers. Exams take questions straight from Launchpad, so just memorize the practice tests (literally).
2 exams & the final (noncumulative); all 80 qs long & mc. showed 6 docs in class & assigned papers for them (only had to be about a page long, basically a summary to prove u paid attention). have to buy launchpad access to take quizzes (big part of grade). took attendance 6 times on random days. overall pretty easy class + shes a sweet old lady
As long as you watch the in-class documentaries and take the online quizzes, you'll do fine. She's a funny professor but her lectures can be kind of boring sometimes.
Don't take this class if you have elderly family members. My grandfather passed away, and she denied me access to assignments because she has a "strict no missing class policy". I'll be reporting this to the department. Along with that, her content is outdated (including using slurs as "vocabulary") and she blatantly lies in her slideshow.
Very funny professor, lecture hall class and few assignments
The reviews about Eriksen's material being outdated are all very accurate, she starts off the class talking about how sex and gender are different, but then proceeds to completely disregard that information for the rest of the course. Not reassuring or informational to LGBTQ+ people at ALL. Read more of the 1 star reviews, all of them are accurate.
She is really funny but does go on tangents!
LISTEN TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS!! Lena's content is insanely outdated and often offensive. Her lectures are intensely boring and really hard to get through, I skipped a lot of classes simply because I could not stand sitting through them. Do not take this class.
She tries to make class entertaining, but it's long lectures consisting of a slideshow riddled with bad memes. She goes off topic a lot. There's a paper each week that she is very easy grader for. Long 100 question exams with no study guide and she tests on details & her opinions. Overall, an easy class but not too great for learning the main topic
Prof. Ericksen comes off as funny at first, but quickly devolves as the glass goes on. Much of the "facts" on her slides can be disproved with a google search and many are genuinely offensive to women and queer people. She requires a $74 textbook that you have to buy and bases her tests off of false information. I REALLY would not take this class.
Outdated information, shows old documentaries with plenty of outdated information along with outdated terms. Expensive textbook that has online quizzes. Lectures are long and boring. The exams are a joke and the questions do not even pertain to what we learn. Would not recommend.
Professor Erickson is definitely not someone you should take for this class. Save yourself the trouble of being shocked and uncomfortable at every lecture. She doesn't really tackle any part of psychology of gender well besides human development. She hyperfocuses on the heterosexual and biological aspects of gender instead of psychology.
I'm not really sure where to start from using straight up outdated information to bigoted videos to deadnaming people and so much more this teacher is horrible if you have any interest in actually learning anything about gender psychology the only redeeming thing about this class is that it's very easy if that's all you want.
I wouldn't recommend this professor for this course to my worst enemy. She's teaching outdated material, and using incorrect terms for stuff. Her exams are extremely offensive and she shows content that needs trigger/content warnings, and puts trigger/content warnings on things that don't need to be censored. Take the class, but not taught by her.
Shes very stubborn with her curriculum and you have to buy an $80 book to get the access code for her class. Her curriculum is also very outdated and stuck in the 80s-90s. The class will irritate you if you know anything about lgbt.
Awful professor. She grades really easy, but the ma
I'm not sure why she gets such high remarks. Sure, she can be "funny" at times, but her lectures are freaking awful. Not only is her information often outdated, it can be offensive too. If you don't want to feel uncomfortable during a class or get offended, STAY AWAY from Prof Ericksen's classes at all costs!
Well, she had her funny moments at the beginning of the quarter. Some of the things presented in lecture slides were probably unnecessary, very often things didn't actually need a "content warning" (but there were some cases it did), some of the things discussed definitely could've been talked about better, this class was definitely something...
Unreal GUR, easy assignments, and easy exams.
Lectures were long and unengaging, 94% of your grade is exams and quizzes. There were conflicting due dates in the syllabus, canvas, and the online textbook/quiz website. Information was given during the first day of class that directly conflicts the syllabus, one of which refers to assignments as extra credit and the other 12% of your grade.
Several times throughout the term, there were failures to give content warnings on deeply triggering topics as well as having those topics show up in readings and quizzes. Lectures were dry and reading review, so class attendance was useless.
The textbook she used was from 2011. It was outdated and awful. Among other outdated terms and concepts, it discussed finding a cure for autism. It made it feel like the information I got in class was 15 years old, which doesn't fly in a field as fast-paced and changing as psychology. We watched several films that were also very outdated.
Course material is offensive and possibly triggering, she has a proclivity for passing off verifiably untrue statements as facts based entirely on opinions. Goes on long tangents, doesn't discuss the actual course topic, uses outdated language and shares harmful beliefs about minority groups.
Some other reviews have accusations of transphobia, but I didn't read her that way - I just think she was misinformed. Fortunately, most test questions are easy enough that you don't need to show up to class or read the book, so it's an easy A. I wouldn't take another on of her classes for the education value.
PSY 305 Best professor I've ever had! She is very kind, energetic, and warm. She cares about all her students and also wants them to understand the material. As someone who struggles to pay attention, her class was extremely engaging. She does her best to remain educated on social norms and new findings in science.
Dr. Ericksens class was amazing. She is so intelligent and obviously passionate about what she does! I have never received the kind of feedback that I had with her. She is kind, funny and does her best to work with you on your research paper every step of the way! Would 100% take a writing course again. She made me such a better writer!
Lena has a lot of bad reviews for this class, which I don't understand. The class is really easy, you could skip every class and still end the class with a good grade. The exams are also really easy. There are 2 exams with 100 questions each but they are super easy questions. Take this class for easy grade, and low participation
Lena was overall okay i didn't like her teaching style and she loved stereotypes but she wasn't terrible
Speaks in stereotypes. Lectures are very unorganized and she tries to relate everything back to her life, rather than the course material. There is in class writing assignments and tests and that is about all you will be graded on. Tests are also unorganized, all assignments including tests provide little or no feedback.
lectures & notes were very disorganized. info provided in class didn't match with exams. communication outside of class was difficult & useless. grade determined by exams & random assignments in class for extra credit but wasn't promised for each class. got the book for this class & it was useless. the class felt like a waste of my quarter/time :/
Never got anything higher than a C, on exams. Pretty sure exams are entirely opinion-based, as nothing from class notes or textbook notes was in exams. Wouldn't be an issue if grades weren't heavily impacted by exams. She had in-class extra credit but would only give it out as she so pleased. She's a sweet woman, but her teachings are outdated.
A REALLY REALLY bad professor, her lectures were outdated and boring, the things she said sometimes were just straight up weird. The biggest issue was the exams the questions were phrased in ways where all the options could be correct but you had to know exactly what the book said. asignments in lecture meaning you need to show up in order to pass
Her class was Fine, you definitely need to attend class because she has random assignments that are lowkey worth a lot of your grade. The quizzes are straightforward but she doesn't release the answer key so you can know what you got wrong. And her emails are vague.
Lena's class is hit-or-miss - the content can be outdated and the exams tricky. But if you engage with the material and use unstuckstudy ai for study prep, you can still do well. Just be prepared for a disorganized class structure.
