If you went to every lecture and took notes (copy what she rights on the board) you will be fine. Very clear understandable lectures, always felt like you learned something after lectures. Exams were difficult but she curves so that a 70 is an A. I didn't get an A because I commute 40 minutes and the class was at 8 am so I slept in a few times.
very long lab reports. never actually saw her, only my TA. class average was a 50%, but the course is heavily curved
You don't see her, but that's how labs work. My TA was awesome and very helpful. The reports are challenging and the exams are difficult, but don't drop the class... It's curved a good bit. Also, you need the manual, obviously. Overall it was fine.
Her lectures are amazing. Chemistry has always been my worst subject and she makes it easy to grasp. She's also super accessible and her office hours are pretty much all day every day. Go to office hours instead of discussion. Her tests are hard and the grading is tough. The best way to do well is to do a ton of practice problems!
If you are looking to take CHEM135 with Stocker, it's likely that you, like myself, will never be taking a Chemistry past 135. The administrators at Maryland know this, so they require A LOT to be covered in a one-semester class. This class is extremely tough, but Stocker is a great teacher. Beware, though, she goes all-out with Organic Chem.
She is a nice person. However, it is impossible to complete her tests. In a 50 minute time period you must complete almost 90 minutes worth of work, making the best you can possibly do around a 60. Would not take again, and recommend to all other that they become a liberal arts major.
Dr. Stocker is a great prof. Orgo is not an easy class by any means, her tests are not easy but they are not impossible. I always went to her for help, I was rather embarrassed with my minuscule knowledge but she wanted me to learn. She wants to help and she can help, a great person. Lectures are not great hard to follow but, that's the material
Dr. Stocker is def one of the best, nicest chem teachers out there! Her lectures are very clear and she is great at explaining concepts! Tests are difficult but if you do the practice sets and look at her old exams, you can get used to the format and get a really accurate feel for what will be on the test. She is super helpful during office hours
Dr. Stocker's class is the way to go for Orgo I. Don't let the bad rating and low averages fool you. Yes, her averages are very low, but this means its relatively easy to get an A if you are a step ahead of your peers. I remember one of her midterms in particular, a 28/100 (!!) got you a C. Mess around and get a 70 on an exam? Your looking at an A+
It's organic chemistry, tests are hard. However, she is open to questions and helping and is easy to talk to. The lecture are lengthy but I didn't even break open the book. Her lectures cover 99% of the test, even small things. Tests are curved, homeworkoptional, but do it, understand it, and you'll be above the curve. Funny and caring orgo prof.
Dr. Stocker is one of the best professors I've had at UMD. While the material was very challenging, I enjoyed the class largely due to Stocker. Her explanations and lectures are clear. The weekly practice problems (optional) are great reviews and definitely help for exams. Grades will mostly come from exams but she does do clicker questions too.
Dr. Stocker is welcoming and motivating. Although tests were difficult, the problem sets that she provides are extremely beneficial; I was more prepared for the exams because of them. Dr. Stocker also gives students time to process clicker questions before answering them. Lectures were very engaging and easy to follow.
I liked Dr. Stocker as a professor and person; I just am not about chemistry. She teaches very quickly and sometimes leaves us in the dust trying to put things together, but the GSS and office hours make up for the confusion. You HAVE to study to do well on tests or else you're screwed. Tests can be a little long which makes it more stressful.
With very little chemistry background, I overall think Stocker was good. She's funny and her practice exams are helpful. It is definitely a hard class, but if you put a lot of effort in you should succeed. I enjoyed learning with her and compared to my friend's experiences with other chem professors, she seems to be one of the best choices!
Dr stocker was overall a great professor in my opinion. go to lecture if you want to fully understand the material and get clicker points. Definitely do your homework, it's the same points as an exam and its never that hard. Do problem sets if you're struggling, always look at old exams to be prepared!
She's great! She does curves. She emails problems sets for practice and eventually sends out the key for them. Practice and memorization is key for this class.
Dr. Stocker has extremely good analogies to teach a lot of concepts (Warning: She uses cats a lot), and they really make things stick. Chemistry has historically been hard for me, but she made it enjoyable and digestible.
Dr. Stocker is the best! Her tests can sometimes have tricky parts but she curves so it's okay if you don't get everything right. She is super nice and accessible during office hours!
I LOVED her as a teacher! She is so sweet and knowledgable. You HAVE to go to lectures because almost all the test material is dependent on lecture notes. There are also clickers. Go to her doing office hours early if you do not get material. As long as you understand lecture material and do the practice tests, you should do well!
She is an AMAZING chem teacher. She teaches all of the topics great and if you go to all of her lectures, write down EVERYTHING she writes (she's very lecture heavy), do the online optional practice problems and the mandatory HW and study it before the test, you'll do fine. Sounds like a lot, but chem with her was actually great. -DS2k17
Dr. Stocker is an amazing professor. She is always willing to help if you go to her office hours. She also has old exams in her office that you can take pictures of. She gives homework and clicker grades (half participation, half accuracy), and curves final grades. GSS and problem sets help a lot.
Super hard grader but theres a huge curve at the end of the class. Always open for office hours and is really helpful
Dr. Stocker was awesome. She is really passionate about what she teaches and it shows in her lectures. I hate chemistry, but she made it enjoyable.
She's so nice but I had a really hard time with this class. If you haven't taken Chemistry in awhile or don't have background in Chemistry, she may not be the best professor for you. Lots of material is assumed that you know, so her lectures seemed disjointed to me. She does clicker questions in class which are decently difficult.
An amazing professor and really nice person who genuinely cares about her students.
Overall, great teacher. Super nice, she knows her stuff, and she is clear about her expectations. Her lectures are detailed and IMPORTANT, so go to every one or else you'll miss important material. Problem sets, GSS, and office hours are KEY to passing this class. The curve is INSANE at the end of the class, don't freak out, but study hella.
My classmates love her, while her teaching style is not for me. While orgo is basically a memorization class, Stocker teaches heavily on the theories behind the reactions when the tests are on "questions-answers-without explanations". However, she is an amazing person and she does know and love orgo.
Her tests mirror problems on her problem sets and lecture, with the final mirroring the prior 3 tests. You don't need a textbook. Do the previous tests, go to GSS and her office hours (but not right before the test or there'll be 50 people in there...) There's clicker questions to help. Overall highly recommend. She also loves referencing cats fyi.
Stocker is super caring and highly respected prof. Lectures are actually fun and easy to understand with clicker questions and practice problems. Tests are really hard and no matter how I prepared for them, I never did well, but she provides plenty of test prep materials. Study the lecture material after each class and use your resources to do well
Amazing professor. Orgo is difficult no matter who teaches, but Stocker makes it easier. Explains everything well and thoroughly prepares for exams. Would recommend.
I had a 43% throughout the entire semester so I've been feeling on edge the entire semester. My grade mostly focused on the exams. There are only 3 homework- wish there was more so I could get more points. Granted, she did say that mastering orgo doesn't help students much. Overall, may the curve be with you.
Dr. Stocker is a great Professor. After almost failing GenChem, I was terrified for Orgo but ended up with a B .... which could've been an A if I'd taken it seriously from the beginning - with that being said start studying FROM the beginning, be on top of it, go to her office hours (useful!!!!), and do practice problems + all the problem sets!!
Ive taken stocker twice, both classes extremely difficult. The averages are so low, everyone I knew in the class always felt like they could never be prepared. Also felt like there werent many point opportunities other than the 3 exams where averages were 50% and the final. I do not recommend, but she is one of the nicer and clearer lecturers.
Stocker is a good teacher but her tests are extremely hard for both I and II (test questions are harder than her homework or the Orgo 2 book). I would probably recommend another professor, but she does curve heavily.
She explains material so well, it is amazing. I am usually the type to zone out in class but I found myself looking forward to her lectures. Her exams are very difficult so it is important that you never get behind in this course. She is very often accessible outside class if you don't understand something.
Stocker was solid, but at the mercy of the subject. She takes complex concepts and makes them make sense (like 70% of the time). She's good help at office hours, but everyone else goes too so try to get there early. Lots of clicker questions. I didn't do well on her tests, but I know some people did. Despite that, she curved my grade from C- to B.
The labs are easy to do, but the midterm and final are hard. The averages for both were 50's. Overall, a ok class.
Overall, Stocker is a clear lecturer. Her teaching style simply wasnt for me. She doesnt recommend working out of the book, only her prob. sets (which are nothing compared to exams). You will learn a lot by attending class, but it is courses like these that make me wonder why there arent many point opportunities for such a tough subject. Shabby.
I had her for orgo I and II, she is very conceptual (acid-base chem) heavy on her exams. Exams make up most of your grade. She was bit disorganized with her problem sets, because it's the first time she's teaching it in the sem. Her lectures were still very clear. She won the 2018 dean's outstanding lecturer award, and definitely deserves it.
The labs are easy. However, the midterm & final exam are EXTREMELY HARD. I received an avg of A's/B+ on lab reports, read the whole lab manual, studied really hard for exams but still failed. (Avg on the lab exams were around 50%). On the lab exam, there are 10 MC questions & have answer choices A-H. One of them had A-J. Designs the test so we fail
Dr. Stocker is an amazing teacher. She has office hours just about every day of the week. Since her practice problems can be really easy, she lets you take pictures of past exams and will help you with any problem you are stuck on. She is also a great lecturer; she makes orgo fun and exciting because she makes sure you understand the mechanisms.
best gen chem 1 teacher. very clear and concise; great pacing. I was able to understand all of the material completely. the clicker points are graded for accuracy but were fine. the tests were fair. homework assignments were super helpful to study for tests. she had a kinda nasally voice but seemed nice, only bothered me a little bit.
Hard grader, hard tests. Test and clicker questions are the only graded things.
Stockers a good choice
Wonderful! Was always very respectful and easy to talk to outside of class. This was the first time I had taken chemistry in over 4 years and she truly made it very digestible and not nearly as scary as other people make it out to be. Super nice, 11/10 would recommend every time.
Only grades are exams and clickers so no room for error. Tests are extremely hard, definitely an everyday class. You have to work extremely hard and may still not get the grade you want.
Dr. Stocker does a really great job explaining tough concepts. She provides practice exams in her office, and those are key to succeeding in her class. Also, she is usually in her office, even outside of office hours, so go to her for help. 500 out of the 650 points in the class are exams, so very exam heavy. You don't need a textbook for her class
Dr. Stocker's lectures blow my mind every time, but I love it. She is an amazing lecturer and makes me love chemistry even though I'm terrible at it. Most exam averages are about 50% which hurts self esteem, but the curve helps at the end of the semester. I love Stocker, but get ready to work really hard if you want to get a good grade.
Dr. Stocker is amazing. Orgo is not hard as long as you study consistently and keep up with the material. Use the orgo as a 2nd lang books to practice what Stocker teaches! Her exams are SO FAIR. She never puts anything on them that was not covered in class. She also has all her past exams in her office as a resource. She is funny and loves cats!
She is nice, but her class is very hard. It's either you get it or you don't, you can study all day and still fail. But it depends on the type of learner you are. The class moves very fast and her tests are loaded with material.
Not a hard class. Study and go to her office hours. If you are lucky enough to get Alex as your TA, make sure you go to discussion. Alex is awesome and she genuinely wants the best for her students.
I had Stocker for CHEM231 not 131... anyway Mrs. Stocker is amazing and really makes sure you understand everything , especially the mechanisms. Wish I could take her for Orgo 2.
The only graded assignments are exams and clickers. Her exams are hard but doable! Make sure you look at old exams and go over your notes and you will be fine! She will try to trick you but if you review your notes and the problem sets youll be fine. Go to discussion, Alex is amazing! If you put in effort you will see the results
If you skip lecture you literally will not pass but she's a good lecturer! I went to her office twice and she answers all of your questions in a way that makes you feel really valued and not stupid which I cant say is the case for all chemistry professors. Overall HARD class but the CURVE IS IMMACULATE.
1) Go to class everyday. 2) Do every single practice exam (timed) she provides and make sure you check them with the keys in her office. 3) Go to discussion and take notes - especially if Alex is your TA. 4) Visit Alex's or Dr. Stocker's office hours if you have any questions. 5) Make lots of flashcards and review as often as you can.
Class was pretty straightforward. There are clicker questions, so you definitely should go to class. It is pretty test heavy, but she allows you to take pictures of past exams to study if you go to her office hours . The exams are fair. She is a great lecturer and is really engaging and approachable. There was also a decent curve at the end.
Highly recommended. Make sure you go to lectures (graded clickers). Textbook is useful for homework. Lectures were engaging and very informative. Exams are difficult but not impossible - make sure you understand the material well. She will warn you of possible trick questions during lectures. Very nice and approachable. Final grade curved.
Great professor! Makes you put in the work but her tests are reasonable.
goes super super quick in lecture and the content isn't easy but she really wants the students to well
Her classes are very difficult- but she is a solid lecturer and her gen chem will prepare you very well for future chem courses. Her office hours are really helpful and she's very approachable. Challenging class, but worth it if you need to continue beyond chem131.
Stocker is a great lecturer and she does a great job answering questions and making the topics easier to understand. Class material is among hardest at UMD, and exams are hard but straight forward and get a nice curve. Look at practice exams. Theres homework which isnt easy, and clickers every once in a while. Tough but prepares you for orgo 2
Genuinely the best professor I've had at UMD but the class content is wildly difficult and she goes through it quickly. Recommend recording her lectures and actually studying on a weekly basis.
I see a lot of 5/5 for quality and difficulty. That's so true. She's like the best but her exams are also really hard. Take her, go to her office hours, you won't regret it.
She is a solid lecturer! Makes the topic easier to understand! She moves fast at times so I recommend to record the lectures and review it after class. Do the practice sets!!!! Homework and tests were difficult. However she is very accessible! Fair curve of 10-13% curve!
Amazing lecturer! I agree with everything said before me. Attend every lecture/don't fall behind/manage your time. There's a good curve at the end (10-11%). Get used to going to her office hours, solving her problem sets (not graded), and studying her past exams. Don't panic and drop midsemester, you'll be fine. It's not easy, but it's doable.
I was blw avg for the first 2 exams. Everything clicked at the 3rd exam&final as I was well above avg. STAY ON TOP OF the Class TRUST ME. Go to OH, do the problem sets /practice exams and check it over with her, I PROMISE you will succeed. Final grade transfer was an 84 and I could've gotten an A if I studied how I did for exam 3 on exam1&2.
Dr. Stocker is a great lecturer! Make sure you go to classes for the graded clicker questions. Tests are reasonable if you have studied well, but don't allow a lot of time to double check answers. She's very accessible outside of class. Do the practice problems she sends, ask questions, go to discussion for practice. Don't panic, there is a curve.
Dr. Stocker is an amazing teacher, she lectures well and her tests are fair (ie everything on the test was covered in class, grading was fair). The curve at the end was decent. If you go to class and review the practice tests you should be fine. Don't buy the $200 Orgo bundle pack (UMD), get Organic Chem as a Second Language semester 1 &2 (amazon).
So yeah, she's the best orgo professor but seriously her exams are also harder. She'll be able to explain everything during office hours and she's basically in her office anytime when she's not teaching. I really wish she'd curve more because the average was pretty low (she said it's usually 50-60). The curve was definitely less than 10 points. :(
In my opinion, she was probably one of the worst professors I have ever taken. I spent a majority of my time studying for this class, and the class average was a 50% with the smallest curve. Do not take her, because she rushes through material and makes exams extremely hard compared to the past exams.
Dr. Stocker is a real gem. Honestly, I was SO scared going into orgo I, but Stocker made it so manageable, I cannot recommend her enough. She kept her lectures straightforward, is great at making difficult concepts understandable, and is almost always in her office ready to answer questions. Do the old exams before exams! She's great, take Stocker!
I took Dr. Stocker for CHEM 131, 231, and 241. She's probably my favorite teacher at UMD. Tests are very fair and everything is covered in the lectures. Homeworks are stressful at first but get easier. Clickers are extra credit. Do the practice problems. There is a curve. Go to lecture - textbook isn't very helpful. Would highly recommend.
Stocker's one of the best choices! Her office is always open, clear lectures, knows how to teach Honestly Orgo doesn't have to be hard, you just need to put in the time. Do her practice problems, rewrite your notes, UNDERSTAND the mechanisms DO NOT fall behind or procrastinate... this class moves very fast Make cheat sheets for exams, get help ASAP
Great professor that makes the concepts clear. Exams are pretty straightforward which led to a pretty small curve.
She was the worst professor I have ever had. I love chemistry and I took her class because of the good reviews. I was wrong, her class was a lot of people retaking so low curves and she was not accessible at all. I commute so I try to go to office hours when I can. but she was never there and when she was she wouldn't talk.I DONT RECOMMEND
if you think you want Dr. Stocker take her as early as possible to learn her teaching style because its WHACK. She basically only teaches using practice problems which is fine. Pay attention to EVERYTHING she says because she uses obscure stories as examples on the exam even though in class they don't seem important.
Dr. Stocker is a nice person, she teaches well, and understands her topic well. I liked her class. Make sure to go to discussions, it really helps. Sometimes she is kind of vague about topics and I'm thinking to myself, "what did I just learn?" like it's up to u to connect themes. Get Organic Chemistry as a second language text book -- savior!
Absolutely love her!!She teaches her lectures like telling a story and connects materials to the real world (as well as to Organic I)Know the MECHANISMS and summarize rxns. Past exams are a blessing, do them EARLY, go to office hours for questions and you'll basically have the answer keys. Ask her to show examples & talk through her thought process
inconsiderate to students, especially during the pandemic. the only orgo professor who did not cancel an exam due to covid and did not curve the class. dr. stocker will refuse to show you your grade. save yourself and take another professor.
She is a great teacher and really funny and chill, but lecture is mainly simple examples and not any definitions or explanations of things. Discussion is a must to fill in the blanks. Exams are WAY harder than what happens in lecture. She says to not read the book but you will need to. GO TO DISCUSSION. She is really accessible in office hours.
Dr. Stocker was fantastic. Please ignore the review below me regarding her not curving, she definitely does. Students in this class love to complain and expect the A in the class to be spoonfed to them. Work hard, use the second language book, and you will be golden. The exams were extremely straight forward if you go through her problem sets.
obviously no matter who you take for orgo, the class will be demanding but Stocker legit made it so much easier than i expected. ppl loved to complain in the GroupMe abt her not curving but she did (my 87 became an A). TAKE HER U WONT REGRET IT
The lectures are next to useless since they aren't very comprehensive and they don't necessarily translate to the exams. The exams are timed harshly and the curve isn't graded until the end so you don't know whether to withdrawal or not. She is an organic chemist and does not teach general chem well. She teaches as though you are a chem major.
This class has been by far the worst college class I have ever taken. I believe she once used to be a good professor, but since COVID happened and classes were moved online. Her exams have been ridiculous, but ill give credit where it due. Her lectures aren't bad it's just that 50mins isn't enough time to do an exam.
Dr. Stocker seems like a great person, but this class just wasn't it. Maybe it was the fact that it was online, or maybe just this course in general, but this class sucked. The tests were horrible, and that was pretty much all that was graded. There was no partial credit, and they were harder than anything we saw in lecture or in problem sets.
Not good at online teaching at all. The exams are very hard and she makes the tests 1000 times harder than the exams.
Absolutely miserable at teaching. The assignments are completely random, the tests are riddled with mistakes, and she spends half her lectures saying "Uhm" or "K" or "Alright" it'll drive you crazy. She spends so much time trying to catch cheaters that she's made the tests impossible for anyone who isn't cheating.
The exams are way harder than the rest of the course work, probably because she wants to make it impossible for cheaters to pass but it means that honest students' grades also took a hit. The exams are all much too long for anyone who needs to actually think about how to answer the problems instead of intrinsically knowing the answer.
Stocker may have been a good teacher before this pandemic, but she is not one now. She is completely asynchronous, except for the tests, and it is very hard to contact her if you have questions. She is unsympathetic to her students, but is constantly complaining about her own workload. Do not take her class if at all possible.
Hard exams at least during covid. Ive never been actually prepared for an exam bc the questions are purposely very confusing. She seems very sweet but is ruthless about grades and will make you give 100% every single week.
Her exams are hard (like exams should be). This is a tough class, it doesn't matter who your professor is. She puts a lot of emphasis on how quickly you can finish problem so practice problems sets with a time limit. GO TO OFFICE HOURS she gives more exam level examples during office hours. She curves heavily at the end so don't get discouraged.
Evil. Obsessed with catching cheating. For her online classes, you can be sure that any kind of question that could possibly be cheated on won't be on the exam, or it will be, but in the form of a trap to catch cheating. I don't even bother practicing the types of questions that could be easily googled, even though they're probably important.
The class's grades are almost entirely dependent on the tests. The questions on the exam are stuff you'll never see anywhere else. Tests are heavily curved but the curve is based on averages, so you never know what you'll get. 50 minutes for 18 hard questions is not enough.
do not take
She teaches class by uploading 3 lectures a week from recordings. She seems like a pretty absent professor who doesn't really care about her students. The tests were extremely hard and she had a ridiculous amount of students drop her class because it is so difficult. I do not recommend taking her class while we are still online at all!
The Stocker described pre-COVID doesn't exist anymore. Detached & uncaring professor who spends more effort accusing 150 students of cheating rather than actually making sure her students know the material. Exam averages are always failing & the grade cutoffs are unknown. Not sure why she has a vendetta against her students, but it needs to change.
Prof does not care about your ability to understand the topic. It was very hard to get an email reply which makes sense as she had tons of students this semester. She would also spend way too much time on easy stuff and rush through and blow off the difficult stuff we acc needed help understanding.
A lot of people don't like her, but she's a really nice and great professor!! She might seem intimidating when she sends out emails to the whole class, but when you email her or talk to her she's a really nice and understanding professor. Also online it wasn't the best, but she did a good job with the cards she was dealt: 800 students and 4 TA's
I took Chem 135 online, and that being said it was the hardest class ever. Dr. Stocker is a phenomenal instructor and makes the concepts easy to understand. The organic chemistry was extremely challenging but that's just the nature of it. The class has a huge curve so if you work hard, you'll pass. HAVE TO WATCH THE LECTURES ON TIME!!!
Professor Stocker's class this semester was entirely asynchronous. Her lectures were fine however some subjects that carried more weight on the exams were not focused on. The tests were very difficult but expect a solid curve after each one. She goes out of her way to seek out cheating so beware.
Dr. Stocker is very knowledgeable about the course content and is very good at explaining most things. However, I feel as if she dwelled on many things that did not require long explanations/were not applicable to the course. The tests are really hard but the curve is good. She does not offer partial credit on online exams so check your work over.
Dr. Stocker had too much on her plate with 800 students making her was absent and inaccessible, flat out telling her students to talk to TAs only and not directly to her. Her tests were difficult and required a lot of preparation but the curve was good. Her cheating focus was extreme it hurt honest students & made the class even more stressful.
Stocker's lectures are great and she does a good job at explaining everything. The only thing is that her exams are extremely hard. The mistakes I would make were mainly due to rushing because of the lack of time she'd give us. She can answer some of your questions during office hours but she has a lot of students so you cant ask a lot.
Dr. Stocker is one of the worst professors I've ever had. With the whole COVID situation, she was put into a situation where she had to teach all 800 CHEM135 students and it was obvious that she was not prepared to do so. Her lecture videos were full of errors, didn't care that her students were not finishing the exam and exam avgs were in the 50s
She's very good at explaining things simply, however her exams are far from simple. She expects us to "get anxiety" while taking these exams filled with calculations and a huge time crunch. I do not recommend taking this class online. If you do, use the textbook problems to get an idea of what her exams will look like, her problem sets don't help.
A lot of work but office hours and the curve helped a lot.
Dr. Stocker is really a nice professor, organic chem is going to be difficult no matter where you take it. However, she made it really clear and understanding, even when we turned to the online environment halfway through. I highly recommend her if you have the chance.
Not the best professor
I had Dr. Stocker in F2018/S2019 for Gen Chem 1/Orgo 1, and she's my favorite prof at UMD! I don't agree w/comments like "she doesn't care about her students." She makes this large campus feel small/welcoming by taking time to talk as long as you reach out. She is extremely hard working who really wants to see her students succeed + love chemistry!
Worst experience with a teacher I have ever had. The easy excuse would be to say that she had to teach 800 students, but the way she taught it wouldn't have mattered if it were 800 or 1. Class average was below failing at one point and then she decided to accuse 150+ students of cheating at the end of the semester. Embarrassment of a teacher.
An okay lecturer, but let me warn you. The exams are brutal. There's no way around spending countless man hours studying and going to every GSS session, maybe even picking up a tutor. Also, she likes to put bait questions on exams to see if people are cheating, which is just rude. She doesn't seem to have much respect for her students.
She only teaches this 1 credit course. She was completely asynchronous and had 1 OF HR which I could never go to cause I had class . The workload seems okay but difficulty and such is not equal to a 1 credit course. She has strict work policy and last semester she accused a bunch of ppl from cheating so be aware. She seems nice but would not recc.
Too much work for a one credit class.
Pretty standard lab class. One lab per week, and one pre-lab assignment/quiz per week. The labs get progressively challenging, and can take between 2-10 hours to complete. She is not forgiving with late work. Overall, this class was very well laid out and easy to understand if you read the lab manual.
-lab videos were confusing and inaccurate -pre quizzes didn't match material -didn't respond to emails and when she did respond, she was condescending -didn't prep the TAs -no study session or practice questions for final (setting us up to fail) -way too much work for 1 credit class -paranoid of cheating (took it out on current students)
The lab videos were very unorganized in regards to collecting data, so you are going to have to re watch the lab videos. The lab reports in general are not difficult, but rather time consuming for a 1 credit class. She only grades your pre-lab assignment, lab reports, and the final exam at the end of the semester.
she overloaded the curriculum with unnecessary material and accused 150 students of cheating. she has no regard for the success of her students and takes pride in the fact that her exams are almost impossible to pass.
For this to be a 1 credit class, the amount of work was ridiculous. I do not know how she is for in person class but online she showed no remorse. Her finals are hard and from what I heard they have always been. The average was about a 59. She worries too much about cheating, instead of her students. I went down an entire letter grade after final.
This class was a disaster. The labs were often unclear and the videos were sloppy. Dr. Stocker needs to work on her lecturing skills to speak more clearly and not stumble on her words so much. The lab manual also needs some work as sometimes the readings aren't related to the lab. The final was very difficult and left me feeling terrible.
Dr. Stocker is truly an amazing professor I met so far at UMD. She's a great lecturer, very organized in terms of topics. She's very funny and she actually cares for her students! Her homeworks are harder in someway than the exam, her exams are straight forward!
I believe Stocker was a pretty fair professor. 3 Lecture Exams, 6 HWs (lowest dropped), and a Final Exam. I would suggest going to GSS every week for extra practice and not skipping discussion. Exams were hard but not as hard as previous semesters (she gives access to old ones but no key). The class had a pretty decent curve at the end.
avoid
Orgo in general is just a tough class but stocker is certainly the best out of all your options. Shes so kind and sometimes brought her son to class lol. Generally, very caring. She gives 3 exams and curves SO MUCH!!!! She wont let you fail as long as you put forth some sort of effort. Also PLEASE BUY THE 2ND LANGUAGE BOOK!! Its the bibleeee
Orgo will be hard no matter who you take it with but Stocker was a fair professor. She was accessible to ask questions during her office hours and I always found her super approachable. Its key to go through all old exams she provides. She was really caring and her exams were straightforward. I would definitely recommend.
Dr. Stocker is by Far the BEST organic chemistry professor UMD has! I ended getting a C in the class only because I was recently diagnose with ADHD. Dr. stocker lectures are engaging and fun, for all the people giving her a bad reputation are only misserable with themselves. Her exams relate to her lectures and homework. TAKE HER, solid choice!!!
Stockers curve makes her the best orgo professor at UMD. Her curve is very generous, a C is the average and about ten points higher is a B. As long as you are on average with everyone else you will pass the class or even do better. Her exams were fair and her lectures were fast paced. This is an extremely hard class but she is the best prof for it
I had Stocker for CHEM135 and CHEM132 as well and I can without a doubt say Stocker shines when she is teaching Orgo. She doesn't post notes online. Complicates some topics but emphasizes important patterns. Get ready to memorize & practice mechanisms, but Stocker is a safe choice. Huge curve btw, ended up with a 68% curved to a B+.
You need to be at the lectures because she does not record nor post annotated slides. Her tests are hard and are slightly similar to the homework. But her tests definitely are multistep and more complicated. Your success depends on GSS, office hours, and a good TA. However, in the end, all the exams were heavily curved.
The one thing I regret about this class is not going to office hours to develop a personal connection with Dr. Stocker. You earn the grade you get. It's possible to get an A if you put in the work that she outlines for you. Study for exams by the practice that SHE GIVES YOU. She expects a lot from you, as she should. you will not regret taking her.
Stocker is really nice and tries to make the content enjoyable but moves entirely too fast and doesnt like when you ask questions. The examples done in class are way simpler than the ones on the exam. Her office hours are helpful if you can manage to go when there arent a hundred people there which is almost impossible.
Almost listened to the bad reviews and dropped her class, would have been the worst mistake ever. She is an amazing professor. It is organic chemistry so yes, it is going to be difficult, but just put in the work and do her practice, go to office hours, try on the homework. You'll be fine! I am so grateful I took this class, she is the best BY FAR
She moves extremely fast and her tests are way too hard. Teaches a topic for twenty minutes one class before an exam and expects you to know it. As far as I've seen, you either have a social life or you do well on her exams. Don't recommend, take Koppel.
I can say without a doubt, stocker is one of the best in the chemistry department. She does move at a very fast pace and requires you to memorize a lot of content, but the way she structures her lectures makes it easy to stay engaged. Just do all the problem sets, practice exams, and ask plenty of questions, and you should be fine.
I highly reccomend Dr. Stocker! She was an amazing lecturer when I took orgo I over the summer. Although she tends to go through material quickly she was a phenomenal lecturer who explained things very clearly and covered everthing in detail so that you could easily grasp everything that she expected you to know for the exams.
I had Koppel last spring and retook orgo 1 with Stocker this summer. Koppel is good but tougher, and she's not as approachable. Stocker conveys information better imo by using everyday analogies. For example, she explains Fischer and Newman projections using pictures of her cats and is generally less intimidating than Koppel of Friedman.
You must try to get Dr. Stocker as your professor if you are taking CHEM231! Orgo is a notoriously difficult subject, but Dr. Stocker is an excellent lecturer. There are no tricks on her exam. If you have adequately practiced past exams, you will succeed on her exams. Take lots of notes in lecture. She is supportive and there to help you!
Orgo will not be a walk in the park but Stocker does her best to make things relevant for us and really does want us to succeed. She holds office hours all the time for questions and it's also a great time to work with other students that show up. She's super nice and a great teacher considering how difficult the subject matter is.
Professor Stocker is one of the most intelligent Professor. I want to express my gratitude to you for everything you have done. I sincerely appreciate all the effort you spent assisting me on numerous occasions. I appreciate the course very much. I thoroughly appreciated your talk and your wonderful sense of humor.
Stocker is a good professor but she teaches very fast and after teaching you a topic she will give you a hard question and tell you to practice it. We are ahead of the other chem classes and there are several topics you have to learn in order to pass the exams. Discussions did not help either, GSS is so much more helpful. Did not enjoy this class.
Orgo is hard, and Stocker tries to make the lectures interesting but she moves extremely quickly and it is hard to keep up. She also made the exam questions much harder than necessary in my opinion, and trying to finish the exams in time was difficult. Go to GSS and STUDY HARD outside of class. Practice problems will help a lot. Do the old exams
Stocker teaches very quickly. Other classes like kopple were way behind us in terms of material. You can do the problem sets to help and hope for the best. She gives you old exams to practice on but she only provides one or two keys which only have the answers, not an explanation. Not helpful.
I only came here for grade/curve reference because I know how hard orgo is. I got a C- with grades of: - 71/100 for exam one which translated into a B and above the average - 30 and 42 out of 100 for exams two and three which is below a c and average - 52/150 for the final exam which is below average c
Dr. Stocker is good at breaking down hard concepts and making them easy to understand. Her exams aren't easy, but they're fair. As long as you pay attention in class and do her practice exams, you'll know exactly what to expect. The only problem is that she doesn't post lecture recordings, so you can't ever afford to miss her class.
I am not a fan. She grades extremely harshly. If you are sick, good luck. She doesn't post any lectures and often refuses to help when asked. Expects people to know concepts that we have never seen before. The HW length is ridiculous. Unless you want to spend all your time teaching yourself, find another professor.
Orgo with Lenea Stocker is challenging, but her teaching style works well if you put in the effort. The lectures move fast, so GSS and unstuck AI are must-have resources. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to grind.
As a person, I think Dr. Stocker is nice and an interesting lecturer by using applicable scenarios to understand concepts. As a professor, she goes extremely fast in lectures and blazes through topics without breaking them down long enough and building up to more complex problems. VERY tough grader but the curve is nice.
The lectures she gives she doesn't provide the annotated one she did in the lecture that day. The lectures though weren't really helpful cause everyday after we have class I would have to teach it to myself all over again by a whole different person.Midterms and finals are you grade decider which for people who struggle with test taking is bad.
10/10 for sure. Dr. Stocker is a phenomenal teacher and lecturer. Orgo is hard no matter what, and no professor is going to make it super easy. BUT if you go to every lecture, study hard, pay attention, and give your best effort, you will do extremely well. Dr. Stocker makes this subject extremely manageable and fun! The octet rule RULES!
Don't choose her if you need organization. Lecture disorganized and explanations only verbal. Expect to annotate, comprehend, and organize notes during lecture. Slides change quick and erased after class. Pick another teacher you will have a better chance as guided notes, quizzes and homework provided. A good teacher will determine pass or fail.
- Grades only exams and nothing else - Makes it clear for students to not email her - Regrades are only done if you write in pen and she regrades only at the end of the semester - Way too fast during lecture
There are defintely some critques to be made, but I think it should overall be stated that she is GOOD AT TEACHING. She doesn't record lectures, or share her notes which I hate, but when you actually go to her lectures, she is very good at trying to make sure you understand the material.
