The crash course he teaches is not for the unprepared. I actually liked his style and learned a lot from his examples. You could get a good grade in his class without reading the book. BTW his exams were hard but fair, and he gave a lot of partial credit. His lectures were very clear and helpful.
good lectures & demos, both math & concepts are very easy to follow,.. he goes over every homework problem in class.. exams have short calculations.. there's nothing to memorize.. he lets you bring notes (3 sheets), you can choose which problems to work on, stay 3 hrs or however long you need.. you have to type up your lab reports. watch your units
The class is well organized. He focusses on what's important and explains everything in detail. His lectures make the textbook easier to read. He gives tons of hints for the tests in the reviews. I should have taken 1401 with him.
He's friendly and easy to talk to. Overall great class. It helped me understand physics.
He makes things understandable and manageable so you're not overwhelmed. Not hard to pass if you pay attention and put in some effort. Highly recommended :)
Very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. He doesn't do all the theory derivations but he points out what you need to know and he shows you all the steps in the examples and homework problems. He does a great job at explaining things. Pretty laid back atmosphere except for the exams.
Super guy - and a heck of a teacher. I had both 1401 and 1402 with him. He was very patient and helpful. He made everything interesting and understandable for the average student. He doesn't teach often, but if you see him listed, take him.
He knows the stuff cold, and he has a knack for explaining difficult topics in a simple and effective manner. By far one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Great Teacher. Easy to understand. I really lucked out with him.. being a transfer student and all. Very Very nice and patient man. If you dont understand something, he'll keep saying it different till you understand. I could go on and on. Long story short... TAKE HIM!
This man is an awesome teacher, and an excellent explainer of difficult concepts (there are many of them in 1402). I really learned a lot in his class, and I would take any class with him.
I cannot recommend this instructor enough! He teaches well and has a good personality. You probably don't need the textbook with him
Really good teacher. I took his classes when I was going to UT.
had to take a different day because my work schedule changed on me but i think he's a very good teacher. his lectures are very easy to understand. i don't know anything about his exams.
Yeah, very good lectures. Pretty clear, not too fast or slow. His exams are not that hard. You could get a decent grade if you have a lot of partial credit.
Very organized, plain spoken, easy to understand. Sometimes he skips the math.. he doesn't do derivations for the formulas. Not hard to get a decentgrade but if you missed something he showed in class and don't have the notes you're gonna be SOL on the exams. I wish he would teach the next class also!
I enjoyed his class and learned a lot from it. I also appreciated that many of his examples were aimed at bio majors.
He is ok. He goes really fast skip steps and not cover all the concepts in detail. He is really nice in grading give you a grade for trying.
He was very fast class for me. But he is very nice and easy going. He is very kind on grades.
Highly efficient no frills teacher. Very patient & helpful if you're not clear on something. Class is hard, huge range of topics. You have choices on exams, he solves most probs in 2-3 lines, which makes you slap yourself. Awesome final lecture on the most boring chapter in the book. (Book is a waste, hard to tell what's important when you read it)
Mr. Loc is an excellent physics teacher. I would take him again for the 2nd half if possible. His lectures are very focused and clear - most of all they’re high yield. His exams can be rough but they teach you a lot. Plus he’s not a harsh grader. He always answers questions and makes sure you understand the material. He’s very responsive on emails.
Very cool professor and very interesting course. You have to study a lot though for the tests, but he also tells you what NOT to study,
Great teacher who cares about his students. He makes the class simple and understandable. Enthusiastic, well informed and extremely fair. He's my favorite ACC instructor yet!
His class was exactly what I needed. Thumbs Up!!!
excellent class. he can really explain everything. i wish he was teaching my class this semester, that's for sure....
Mr. Loc did a great job explaining everything in class. I was afraid of physics but now I can say I understand it. He was Always helpful, and a very fair man. I really couldn't ask for a better teacher.
Possibly one of the nicest professors you will ever have for a rock hard subject. Very clear in his lectures - very straightforward and knowledgeable. Lots of examples from real life. More of a big picture lecturer, he shows formulas and doesn't dwell on details. No memorization for anything -- BUT beware his exams can be brutal if you fall behind.
Tough class, but he makes it suck less and easier to handle. Lectures are well thought out and straight to the point. Labs are cake!
Very good lecturer, he does walk you through the math, but doesn't treat students like complete morons. Tests mostly along main concepts, couple super hard probs which you don't really need to do if you can do the other ones already. Def hardcore no bs class, you have to use calculus. Good class.
He teaches clearly & grades fairly. Also answers emails & very reasonable/accommodating. Very apt teacher who knows physics.
He takes a different approach than the book and helps fill in the gaps a lot. That being said I am still completely intimidated by the subject. Luckily he's a kind grader.
very clear and easy to understand lectures.. sometimes powerpoints and you don't have to take notes. great teacher.
A good and fair professor. The material covered is maths intensive and quite difficult.
Super glad I took his class. Easygoing, very knowledgeable teacher who knows how to teach and respects my time as a working adult. For instance, he shows you how to solve problems through the examples which the way he presents them are much easier to comprehend than the book. I wish he's also teaching the next class.
A tough class if you don't remember calculus. At least 2/3 of the chapters are very demanding. The lectures are informative and he's a very nice man. Exams are a challenge, the final is somewhat easier since much of it comes from examples in class.
He saved my butt. This is a good man and a good class.
Was a hard class but excellent teacher. Very good and useful lectures... not a time waster
He is a "no bs" type teacher -- who is also truly nice and helpful. Would take again.
He teaches fast seems to skip steps and not cover all the concepts in detail. Is fair in grading.
I loved his class and found it to be highly informative. I didn't have a good experience in 1401 - hated projectile motion - but this class was very different. His slides had too much information sometimes, but he didn't make you memorize anything. Overall, a great teacher!!!
He knows what he's talking about and is super clear on his lectures. His quantum stuff is really amazing and blows your mind. It's much, much better than the textbook. He is a find if you're interested in physics. Coursework is not too difficult and he makes it attainable. Very easy to understand, very enthusiastic, always helpful towards students.
good professor who has great knowledge of the material and gives clear explanations. tests are based off of the examples or the homework, there is partial credit. nevertheless its not an easy class by any means
I am taking this class for sonography. He is a great explainer and gives a lot of extra details that are applicable to the field I want to go into, and healthcare in general. The labs are fairly straightforward. Super clear examples, his exams are not too bad , they're reasonable .... (or should be if you attend class everyday!). Very good teacher.
His lectures really helped me. Like a lot! I wish I had known about him before, and taken physics with him from the start.
A bit laid back but very methodical. His lectures are precise, clear and cut to the chase. You get some options on the exams, which are curved somehow. One part is multiple choice. He posts his powerpoints and labs online. His class is very well done. Definitely a good pick for PHYS 1410.
His lectures were good. I had no problem following them. His exams were more on the hard side. He gave partial credit if you showed work.
Just a really hard class -- there is a ton of advanced integrals in every chapter. Thankfully he gives you quite a bit of room for error. Tests are much simpler than the homework -- many people finish early. They look more like the examples he shows. He really tries and makes learning and passing possible for the average engineering student.
Fair and humane grading policy, easy to understand lectures, very flexible in labs. Would take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Easy A thanks to his grading policy. Disorganized lectures at times. Drawings are often used to describe concepts but are indecipherable. I'd recommend taking him for the grade but don't expect to get much out of lecture except for answers to the MC on the exams. Overall decent professor.
Good professor who uses examples to teach you problem solving and point out the pitfalls. I didn't even use a tutor for his class. There is no memorization whatsoever. Exams are mostly either you know it or you don't. Very straightforward to pass if you get a minimum number of points. It's pretty much what you make it. There is quite a bit of hw
Great at breaking things down and explaining them to make everything clear. Helps you understand the concepts behind the math. Runs a pretty smooth class. Content is challenging to difficult. Not much plug and chug on exams. They make you think. But absolutely doable if you have been in class. Generally a good guy that wants students to do well.
Could have been a dull and brutal class because of the theory and calculus, but he kept it interesting and realistic. A lot of problems he worked had "what if" scenarios to challenge your grasp of the material, which I thought was very helpful for my understanding and exam preparation.
It's easy to watch him lecture and see the logic behind all the problems. Unfortunately there is so much material it's difficult to get an A. I took him twice, once on the east side. That class was full, the seating was cramped and you couldn't move to another table. Not my preferred location but I learned a ton and they had a really cool lab tech.
He's a great explainer of the material. Super helpful and easy going personality. His grading system is very fair and reasonable. Will take again for another class.
He gives clear lectures. Very understandable and simple to follow. It is definitely possible to get a good grade if you're willing to study, and also because of the way he assigns points.
I wouldn't recommend taking him if you actually want to learn the material. He is very lenient with grading on tests, homework, and labs so it's really easy to get an A in his class. His lectures can be hard to understand, but overall he is a very nice professor and can be helpful if you go ask him for help.
Good teacher with common sense, really enjoyed his class.
His lectures are full of examples, pretty thorough and he can delve further if you ask. There are some derivations of the fundamental equations to show you where they come from. His exams are generally a beast. Your formula sheet may or may not help you, so you really have to remember your techniques to earn points for a good grade. Solid professor
He is really good at showing you how to apply the principles to solve a problem. His lectures are pretty easy to follow. Tests are generally reasonable but seem to get harder toward the end, maybe because of the schedule which is crazy intense.
Very clear and very efficient in teaching the material... Happy with my grade, but I had to work hard for it. Labs are mostly easy to do, and fast.
Very knowledgeable professor. He knows how to explain things, and make things interesting. Strongly recommend if you need this class.
I just finished PHYS1401-02 with him. Both classes were full. We had a horrible schedule (being 5 week classes) but he kept everything running smooth and low stress. Exams were hard, but no surprises if you studied. Averages were high. Very good lectures that you could use to tackle the homework on your own. I really enjoyed what I learned from him
He is a good explainer and a solid professor. Easy learning, low-stress class environment. His exams can be a challenge... but they're not really difficult. He basically gives everyone a shot at getting a passing grade.
A very good prof if youre into engineering or science. It's old fashioned teaching on the board for the most part, working out the problems, the reasons and methods, the mistakes people make, etc. Problem sets and the exams are a pain. It's easy to pass, but hard to get an A if you didn't get enough points early on or forgot to turn in something.
Yay! Great teacher. There is some interesting information in every class and he presents it well. Labs are very easy.
Super great prof take him! I had him for physics in the summer and tho the lectures are long he was available all the time to help. He made you attempt only half the hw and graded leniently on the tests and threw out multiple questions. Physics is hard but this prof tried to make it as easy as possible.
Great guy and great professor. Very nice and knowledgeable. He really knows how to explain and teach a very difficult subject to students like myself who had no prior background or interest.
He is very clear and how he works the examples in a way thats easy to understand. He is also very time efficient, no story telling, no wasting time, no busy work, only what you need to know , which makes for a fast and enjoyable summer class
His lectures are right to the point and help clarifying things in the book. Very accessible for help and questions. And very reasonable class policies.
He knows how to present the material and grade fairly. Tests are the same level of difficulty as the examples or lower. Very understanding with issues and kind as a person.
Pretty much as expected given the awful time of day (7 AM physics exams, anyone?). Solid foundation class for UT credit and you're not treated like cattle.
With a rough experience in physics prior to taking this course, I'm doing fantastic in Mr Loc's class. He explains concepts clearly (he teaches by writing out examples and notes on the whiteboard as he is talking, which in my opinion is SO MUCH BETTER than a teacher just speaking with a powerpoint behind them). Best physics teacher I've had yet :)
Medium tough midterms, but quick and easy final. No makeups or extra credit. Very reasonable about lab and homework. Lectures you dont have to attend but if he writes down something on the board you can bet hell ask you about it on the exams. This from taking both Eng. Phys. classes with him and both times I got an A. He is a very good professor.
A truly difficult class that has a lot of - very - confusing rules and equations... I struggled at the beginning because I had forgotten some stuff, but it turned out well... His explanations and his being available really helped me achieve a good grade that I wanted and worked for.
6 week summer course, coming to class is very important. (attendance is a small portion of grade) Teaches off of the textbook, always open to questions and helps you work out homework problems. Plenty of time given for exams.
He makes it easy and simple to learn. Nice and VERY quick class!!
Methodical and really knows his stuff. Teaches by examples which are very easy to understand. Doesnt waste time on items he wont test you on. Grading policies are fair and generous. Super glad I ended up in his class.
Mr. Loc is a highly competent teacher. He does a great job explaining the problems and the principles. He turns what could potentially be a hard to pass class into a positive experience. Everything in the syllabus is reasonable and doable. I would take him again for PHYS 2426 if he teaches it next summer.
Great professor for calc physics. Super clear and practical oriented. Lectures are a bit on the fast side but always to the point and useful, without stories or anecdotes. He gives a lot of cushion for exams, and the free points from the non exam parts will make a difference in your grade. Final is a breeze. Definite recommend!
Do not underestimate this course. Make time for this class. The material is difficult. Loc is always available to answer questions and he really wants everyone to do well. He's a fair grader but his tests are hard. 70-80% are word problems. 20-30% are MC. Study in class notes, the book examples, the homework. Show up to class / labs. Good Luck!
He stresses the fundamentals and uses the board heavily. There are few PowerPoints. You have to show your homework in hardcopy. Review days have hints and tell you what to skip. Labs are basically participation, great lab techs make everything go fast. Overall a very good class and a great teacher.
He is a really good physics teacher and a kind man who understands that main purpose is to learn, not just to present your works in time. I was behind in physics lab report but he said, "take your time and turn it in before finals and it will be okay". His lectures were amazing and he gives partial credit if you attempt problems in test...
As long as you do the homework and lab reports and show up to class, you're basically guaranteed a B in the class. However, if you actually are trying to understand Mechanics, this is definitely not the class to take. Once we shifted online due to the pandemic, several technical issues arose severely hindering our ability to grasp the material.
He has a great way to explain and I really enjoyed his lectures, both in person and online during the horrible shutdown. Very nice and accommodating professor.
Very good physics prof, he doesnt spend much time on mathematical derivations and theory its all practical examples. We moved to Blackboard for stay at home. He generously wrote out the lectures in detail and uploaded them, knowing some people had connectivity issues.
I needed this class Phys 1410 to fullfill a prerequisite and was not disappointed. I feel that it was time well spent, and I learned much as well.
prof. loc means well but his lectures are like a crash course in engr phys. he barely goes through the material and does problems for most of the class time. definitely read the chapters beforehand if you want his notes to make any sense. he had a hard time moving the class online (bc of covid) which made it a lot harder to follow his lectures
Great guy, Good choice if you know Basic Physics plus a Calculus class (only used sometimes). Reasonable expectations of students.
Just finished this 5-week class. Prof. Loc makes physics understandable, less mysterious, and low stress. Lectures are done real time on BB Whiteboard and are recorded. He uses a pen tablet and video clips for demos and for the lab experiments. Problems are explained thoroughly and in detail. Tests are on the simple side, moderate and 100% doable.
Fast paced but really nice class. Labs & homework have flexible schedule. Wish I had signed up for his 1402 class as well
Took both PHYS 1401 and PHYS 1402 classes with him this summer. Lectures were pretty simple to comprehend. He chose the content that was relevant and informative. Tests were surprisingly easy (easier than homework). Lab vids were quick and straightforward, but you had to watch closely maybe rewind or youd miss something for your calculations etc.
Hard class material wise but Prof. Loc makes it a successful and good learning experience under the circumstances and limitations . there is plenty of time for questions as well extra time on exams. 1402 would have been a giant confusing mess for me without his lectures and explanations .
Not the ideal format because of Covid but it works... All tests are proctored. Labs are flexible and he answers questions. He is a very good physics teacher.
Heavy on lecture but if you pay attention you'll find the information you need. Gives solid answers if you ask. Very easy A if you put in the work to do the homework and labs.
Enjoyed his lectures. He really took the mystery out of it for me!
This man knows his stuff. Good old fashioned teaching and showing you how its done. The lab part is simple but exams come at you pretty fast because the class is only 5 weeks.
Emphasizes only key topics, very helpful notes & lectures , few surprises on exams, pretty easy overall for a condensed 5 week course.
All students beware this individual is hard to comprehend and understand. He is not compassionate about his lectures and has a monotone voice throughout his lessons. Class started out with 30 people and now we have 12 left. He his unorganized and scatter brained. This is by far the worst teacher I have had.
Typical online class with random people from who knows where. My lab partner ghosted me just before a deadline. (The labs turned out to be super easy because he went over practically every little step) His lectures were longish and thorough. The vIdeo clips helped a lot. Test questions were fair - tbh easy!. I would take a class from him again.
Took this class at night after my job. Had zero issues following him on Blackboard live or recorded. Got myself the two books but ended up returning the textbook, you do not need it. Just read his PowerPoints for the conceptual. The workbook is very dense, it is a beast you will need help from him on that one. Class is interesting and full of info.
He teaches physics effectively and goes the extra mile for students.
He gives good examples and simplifies the material. Always responds to questions and concerns. Reasonable and not super strict on labs or attendance.
Excellent teacher. Class is only 5 weeks long so there is a very tight schedule. He gives simple tests that are loosely based on the homework. The grading system is on the lenient side but an A is by no means easy. The supplemental videos really help reinforce the concepts. The big textbook is really optional - I just used whatever he posted on BB.
Claims his lectures suffice understanding the material. There was never a chance to ask any questions, jumps right into lectures and rambles for 135 mins. The textbook was no help either since it was "non-profit" and contained errors. Grades are NEVER posted so you'll only know when the course is over. Difficult to reach outside of class.
Reasonably clear sailing if you remember the word problems from PHYS 1401. His class is essentially PHYS 1401 rephrased in the language of calculus. He allows limited notes on tests plus extra time. The cool dude in the lab is very helpful on makeup days. Easy A/B is about right. It is hard to fail if you put in some effort and show up for labs.
Teaches a methodical approach to problem solving, not plug and chug. Examples are from engineering point of view not abstraction. In lab you may be better off doing the reports for yourself if you have people in your group who are slow or not pulling their own weight. Attendance is not mandatory per se but definitely attend the quick review before
When he actually explains his examples and work, he makes the class simple. However he frequently skips steps in lectures, doesn't explain things well, and puts topics on exams that he doesn't prep you for much. Without the homework and internet, I wouldn't understand much of the problems.
He's a very talented professor with a clear passion for what he's teaching but feel like he can get ahead of himself sometimes with the 100x speed he goes through examples. The key to succeeding is to come prepared to class with some proofreading of the textbook section and some examples to understand his lectures. He's got a bit of an accent too.
Very good instructor. I took away exactly what was needed from this course. I like his manner of teaching. You can tell that he wants everyone to understand the material. I wish I had him for General Physics.
Excellent professor. He made this challenging course easier to understand by working the examples and pointing out the key steps in the process. Little time was spent on derivations of formulas during lecture. He only worked the important ones or else he showed a ppt. A generous grader on exams. Great easy labs with plenty of help and explanations.
Nice professor! The course was challenging overall, but he made the material seem to be much easier. There's not a lot of work. You only need to do the group's lab reports and half of the suggested homework for each chapter to receive full credit. Most of the question on the exam was pretty much easier than the homework. Take him !!
Straight to the point which was much appreciated. Answers questions and explains really clearly. Always responds to emails. Willing to curve to remove a super hard problem or question. Gives you a good background for upper division classes at UT.
The final was easy and predictable . To prepare I just studied the lecture examples that he put on Blackboard. This is A relatively painless class taught by a competent and highly knowledgeable professor. Definitely would take 2426 with him if available.
Easy to understand lectures. Well organized and timely hand backs! Great summer class.
Excellent teacher. He helped me learn and succeed in this class.
Great professor, took physics 1 over the summer and had a great experience. Provides and teaches information directly, and has excellent pre-test reviews of material. Very easy to approach and ask questions.
Don't take this professor if you want to actually learn something! I took him for physics 1 and got an A but now I'm struggling to pass physics 2 because of all the stuff I didn't learn in his class. I'm usually an A student so this is really frustrating! And i'm not the only one. Other people from his physics 1 class are failing too.
Good man. The course is presented at a calculus and sometimes advanced calculus level. He goes over a ton of examples in class which pretty much tells you what is going to be on the exam. Very amicable and super helpful.
Mr. Loc is a good teacher. He takes time to help and explain in great detail if you don't understand something. He also goes over a ton of examples during the lecture and does practically all the homework with the class afterwards. Flexible and accommodating to my unexpected circumstances. Tests are straightforward which most people finish early.
Most labs were hard and barely learned from them. Utilize tutoring for homework bc its also hard. Only grades on labs, hmw, and exams. You do get extra points for showing up. Teaches fast. Take notes. Never saw my grade all semester. Our class was behind toward the end of the semester and had to basically rush through the rest. Hes ver chill though
There is no extra credit but there are points for showing up. I would strongly recommend attending because his tests are much more similar or very close to what you see in class than the homework in the book. Problems are engineering oriented. This is a solid class with excellent help in lab which speeds things quite a bit and gets you out early.
Mr. Loc is a great teacher. He does a great job making a horrible textbook understandable and usable. By the end of the semester everything makes sense. He really goes out of his way to help students learn.
good prof. keeps class informal and stress free. goes over homework if you ask. tests are fair and not hard at all.
Professor Leo Loc makes this challenging course easier. Lectures focus on key examples, and exams are fair. Attendance is mandatory, but well worth it. I found Unstuck AI and the free textbook very helpful for study prep.
