STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!
Avoid this professor unless you enjoy mental anguish
Horrible! More than 3/4 his class failed. You'll end up dropping him.
Hes the worst teacher EVER, book blows goat nuts, not willing to help, DEATH !
he is the worst this school has if ur willing to die this is the class
No Comments
The #1 Worst Thing at St. Johns with Montgoris finishing a close second!!
If u have taken calculus before, and understood it, this class will be extremely easy.
I'd rather be shot in the knee and castrated then take his class again.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
Yuck!
He will remind you of the Grinch!!!
Trys to avoid the student's questions, especially female students. I think he is a misogynist.
If you get this professor then try your best to get out of there!!! He is really bad and very hard! His book makes no sense!!! If you are a girl, he wont even look at you because he is a very religious man! Get Out of there, it will mess up your GPA!
If you really suck at Math and have no commitment to homework then WD, leave, exit, whatever...it'll kill your GPA. If you do your HW and show up, he's very, very easy - esp. for linear.
damn the guyz so ****in confusin! he like races throl the topicz while evryone in class is tryin to catch up...ur best bet is to get out if his class...and all i pharmacy ppl who are tryin to get out..good luck..
Professor Gerber is very unhelpful and speaks very unclearly moving from one topic to another without explaining the material. I feel that his book and material included is not only made up but non-formulary to the main way of doing mathematics.
The trick is to go to SJH tutoring, graduate tutoring in the math dpt, going to his office over & over to let him know that ur trying, put up problems on the board & do those damn excel projects.go to 2 of his lectures & let him know about it.
THIS GUY GOES TO FAST AND STINKS! OFFERS NOT MUCH HELP
This guy goes extremely fast. His tests are kinda hard.
the worst
Absolutely the worse math professor in school. All the feedbacks below are very true, so I guess I won't have to explain anything else. The textbook that he wrote himself has too many mistakes to be legible textbook.
really easy class! take it!
Sometimes, he goes too fast. But u don't have to worry. His tests are not that hard, fairly easy. He is a nice professor. and he gave some extra projects.. it might take some time, but all you have to do is following the instruction, it's easy.
The worst math teacher at St. Johns if you have him immediately switch or drop the class, he will kill your GPA, he has his own book its cheap and horrible, he also can't be fired because he has TENURE (been teaching here for 30yrs.)JUST DROP THE CLASS!!
If you already know your math then take him (b/c he tells you exactly whats on the test) otherwise, STAY AWAY - he writes his own text book which makes no sense, goes too fast and doesnt answer questions. You have to go to his office for help
Goes WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY to fast...sometimes you dont even know what he is talking aboutif you can avoid him do it...his tests are decent but only because you wind up teaching most of the stuff to yourself...stay away
the easiest class i have taken at sju. everyone should take his class. his own book is hard to understand but he gives tons of extra credit. If you find an error in his book, plus one point. How easy is that.
The worst math professor in the history of St. John's. He goes way too fast and is so confusing. He doesn't answer questions and you have to go to his office for help, or you will be lost. His textbooks are just filled with endless mistakes!!
the man gives you homework with easy, medium and hard questions. In his exam he gives med and easy questions. I f you dont do the homework you fail
The Worse Math Professor Ever! After everything I've heard about him, I swore that I would not take him. But one semester I had not choice, and I ended up with a D because he is just so confusing and refuses to answer my questions!
Just listen to the students who have taken him. I gaurantee that everything negative thing you hear about him is true.
This professor is totally unbelievable. It is almost impossible to learn anything from this guy. He doesn't like to answer questions and he is so confusing. His tests are a little easier than his homeworks, but I learned everything from my tutor, not him.
Not good professor to take if you are planning not to do any work
very hard teacher .... his tests are hard...moves wayy to fast...half the class left after the first week..try not to take him
heard so much complaints about him, only 10 brave ppl were left in class after the first week. unclear in his classes and never actually answers questions. has a horrible hearing problem. tests are not hard. helpful if he likes you (hint, hint!)
He is by far the worst professor i've run into so far at SJU. I went to class everyday and still couldn't understand this guy. I've registered to take this class again. If you intentionally looking to flunk, then GERBER'S your man.
Excellent professor. I loved coming to this class, and I look forward to seeing him around campus. Really easy. Do your homework and get an A.
only went to first class, couldn't take it,his teaching sucks, after that i just read HIS textbook and learned it all on my own, his final is similar to his tests, do excel projects
DROP CLASS DROP CLASS DROP CLASS DROP CLASS DROP CLASS DROP CLASS
Absolutely horrible.his math book was hard to understand and the homework problems were impossible compared to the examples he did in class.Failed 3 of the remaining 11 that were in the class. Drop as soon as possible.
By far, the worst professor at SJU. Can't teach and wears the same dirty outfit every day. Has his own (confusing) method. I dropped in the second week. I took Prof. Silvia Rizza and learned the material much more effectively and ultimately did well.
Im taking his class now. Its by far the worst class ever. I cant understand anything he puts on the board. His notes are all over the place. If you have him transfer. My advice is to take Professor Manion. Hes the best Math teacher at St Johns.
he isn't that bad, yes he isn't the easiest teacher out there but that is what college is about, you got to actually sit down and do some work, if you do the homework and do some problems on the board and the extra credit projects he gives- you'll be fine
come on guys, this dude is not that bad! he gives u tons of points to add to your exams. if u do his excel projects and go on the board once in a while, you'll get a A.
HATE HIM!
Excellent teacher. Hard but can do very well if you do the homework. Got two A's from him. People do poorly because they don't want to work.
DROP HIM IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!
This professor knows his subject really well. However, it would be better if he would constantly repeat the fundamental concepts and not assume that it is known or clear to everyone. The book is hard to decipher. HARD!!!
get out of this class as fast as you can!!!
His textbook is really hard to understand but if you do the work you'll definetly get an A. Don't be discourage if you don't understand the concepts go to him and he'll help you. His test are easier than his h.w questions.
Definitely take him for Calculus. I was scared at first, but I worked hard and got an A! His tests are extremely easy. His final is hard but doable. Do the homework and the excel projects and you got a one way ticket to an A.
That man shall burn in hell for the way he teaches !!!! God will punish him for what he put us thru
If you REALLY want to understand math or if you REALLY need math for your major, this is the teacher to have. Must do work but you will master it. Other profs are ez but you wont really know your stuff.
I probably should have never dropped him even though I got an A from Mannion in the summer. He intimidtaed me and alot of other people. His book is confusing but the tests are so much easier. Take him if you cant get Machover or Rizza.
His book is ridiculous. I am a good math student,in highschool got an A in cal, I was completely lost on the first day. Stay away from this prof.
DO NOT TAKE!!! only had him for 2 days but felt like i had him for 2 weeks...im sure he doesnt know what hes teaching because he cant answer a question.
DROP HIM NOW. WORST TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL.
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD. STAY AWAY!!!!
Worst class ever. Do not take this class unless you want to fail and not learn anything. Take Machover he is the best.
THIS GUY IS BAD!!! wait let me re phrase that, THIS GUY SUCKS!! If you get him drop out as soon as you can especially if the class you are taking with him is required for your major. I wish they gave me more room to wright about how bad this guy is!!!!!!
Gustavo sucks!!!!!!
This class blows. Showing up is pointless cause it is such an inconveniece. I am dropping this class. Seriously people got to be losers if they think this professor is good. I am going to take either Machover or Rizza where at least I will get a B+.
If your goal is to get an F than take this guy.
OK. Here's the bottom line. If you like and math and are pretty good at it, you won't have problems in his class. However, if you aren't that great in math, tham you may have trouble understanding him.
this guy is hell on earth
Horrible professor who has a way to make the simplest math the most confusing thing on earth. His tests are pretty easy but it's meaningless with his method of grading. Your semester grade will depend on your final exam. I suggest that if do have him, transfer out now.
Okay, if you can figure the math out on your own after class your safe, however, his final is difficult. Won't matter if you get 100 on all the tests, you need to get at least a 50 on the final to get a D.
The worst teacher I've ever had. St. John's doesn't need someone like this around. Please run far, far away.
hes horrible. do your self a favor and run away in the beginnging of the semester so you dont waste your time stressing. i had to drop the class a few weeks before the final because i was failing so bad, and im usually ok at math. leave or your screwed.

very bad professor
omg we had this guy for a sub and he was horrible! he makes the simplest things torture!
his class was so boring. i could not understand what he taught! before the final i had a 72 test avg and his excel projects really help. i got a B from his class after i studied hard for his final. so damn hard. if you get an A on his final, you get an A for his class.
His tests were so easy. If you go to class you will get an easy A like I did and the rest of my classmates.
This guy is the worst. I couldn't stand him and was forced to drop the class after 3 days. His examples are very unclear and his textbook has several mistakes and mixups in it. He makes everything very difficult and has no compassion if you ever get sick. RUN AWAY!!!!
Calculus is hard, but Gerber makes it so easy to get an A. I would definitely take him again.
His math book is a puzzle. Statistics is easy math but with Gerber and his book it is the worst possible mathimatical combination. He does not help his students at all. Very selfish and rude. Unhelpful. I don't reccomend him. He makes easy things complicated.
worst math teacher, my class had about 20 students and everyone except 6 students withdrawed from his class
he is the worst teacher ever.. almost 75% of my class withdrew. If you don't understand the work that's your problem..... don't even expect him to help you
horrrrible!!..either dropped or failed, ur choice
I love math but I took Gerber and it was the worst way I ever learned math. Be safe and drop the class. His policy is ridiculous. He will not give you a final grade more than 10 points above your class test avg. So if your avg is like 70 for all the class tests and u get a 100 on the final, you would get like an 80 the most. Take Watson!
STAY AWAY very very unclear does not answer qs i am good with math and i had trubles w/ him very unclear gives projects though to lift your grade but still if u take that class that means u r just wastin your time coz u r NOT gonna learn anything period. run awayyyyyy
This is one of the best professors i had at SJU. He's exams are easy. He doesnt put anything that would shock you. he even reviews the day before the exams and tells you excalty wats gonna be on it. he also gives you extra credit.
Been teaching for a while and seems to still like it. very happy througout class and eerily smiling all the time. tests are difficult if you dont do the homework right. very easy otherwise. just listen up and know your math and you will be fine.

He is a nice old man who tries to make things interesting and easier on his students by inventing new ways of doing things that are difficult. Willing to help you, but sometimes he doesn't hear you, so just yell at him and he'll come RUNNING over. Do your homework, and you will get an A with all the extra credit he gives.
A overall bad teacher. I loved math and than gerber came. its a frustrating class for most. im doing ok only because of tutoring. alot of the tutors dont understand his teaching. i wouldnt really do it
DONT TAKE HIM!! u mite think oh, i can read the book, n be ok..no u cant, cuz he wrote the book...he does give extra credit but that doesnt help if ucant get him, n he doesnt explain things rn't arent clear all too well...he will confuse u n u could end up taking the course over the summer...thats alot of money
i dont like leavin bad comments...but he's that bad...believe it or not. he's just an old dude that often make mistakes in sample problems, and class is boring, tests are a pain since no partial credits will be given. it's just not smart to take this class overall.
not as hard as everyone says... his tests are fair .. gives extra credit, which definitely helps a lot. A very nice man and tries his best at teaching.. can be confusing at times. if you work hard its possible to get an A.
his classes are hard to understand..but do the hw..nd he goes over it...ask q's..tests are pretty fair..he even tells u wat topics r on it before the exam..
HORRIBLE!!! Do urself a favor and don't take him. He is very confusing all the time and also is practically deaf. 3/4 quarters of my class ended up dropping the course. The book is also just as hard to comprehend as he is. And if u miss a class it throws u so behind its ridiculous. DO NOT TAKE HIM unless u like to get Ds and Fs.
I fell behind on the homework and I was immediately lost. Please take notes and keep up with the work. Reviewing is necessary. Test questions are similar to the ones in his book. Good luck.
RUN AWAY!!!!!! OMG he has his own book and is fill with many errors!! So boring and annoyin!! Really hard!! DONT TAKE HIM!!
even if you took calculus in hs before, don't take him. his technique is different and confusing. see if you can get a hold of his old tests. before each test he has a review, where he tells you what type of question is gonna be on it. just look for those type on the old tests and ur good. but he doesnt do the same for the final. good luck.
Very arrogant towards his students. Even though he does offer extra credit from the Excel projects and the homeworks, still not enough to help. He uses the textbook that he wrote, and it was far from helpful. Went to help from him before my first exam with him, it only confused me more. I didn't learn a thing and it made me hate math. Drop him now.
I know I'm probably all alone in this opinion, but Professor Gerber is awesome. He is such an easy professor because he gives so much extra credit and tells you exactly what is going to be on the exams. He invented new ways to do problems that used to be difficult. If you ask a question, just speak loudly-he seems to be hard of hearing.
I came into class thinking the ppl who said he was horrible just didn't study. I TRIED to do all the homeworks but at times it's just impossible to understand. you cannot study out of the textbook you can only study on some of the homework questions and examples he went over. MAKE SURE YOU DO ALL EXCEL PROJECTS AND PUT HOMEWORK ON THE BOARD. Otherwise, if you can, drop the class!!!
His material is hard. But he does give like 20 points of extra credit, more if you put hw on the board. You do have to work for the A. If you get a 100 on the final, you can usually get an A. The final is worth more than a 100 points, so it isn't impossible to get a 100.
Worst teacher ever! test are only 5 questions and since hes in his own world while hes teaching and doesnt realize the poor kid in the back row has had his hand up for the past half hour; you end up not learning a thing! just drop it as soon as possible!
He was a hard teacher, but if you do the homework you should be ok. The textbook is really hard to understand and the class moves really quickly but I went to the Math Learning Center for help and I ended up doing really well.
The worst professor EVER!!! Another example on how St. Johns college does not hire good people. Take courses at CPS..There professors are passionate!!!
I hate Him, he is the worst teacher at ST.Johns, i took him my first semester, Went to every class, did all the HW all the extra credit and went to the board everyday for extra credit, I passed 2/3 of the tests and he failed me. I took the same class over with a diff proff and i GOT a DAM A that says something about the Proff
Not so bad. I got an A. You'll do well if you are good in math. If not, he let's you use graphing calculators on the tests. Don't try to understand what he's saying, just copy from the board and figure it out later. Do all of the Excel extra credit, very easy. I also took him for calculus. Almost failed but I did well on the final and pulled a B
worst prof!!
Please! Do not take this class, you will just regret it. I can guarantee you that you will understand almost nothing in his class. I know he isn't doing this intentionally, but he doesn't know how to teach. He doesn't tell you what's on the tests. His tests are slightly easier than his homework. In the end, you'll learn nothing and get an F.
It has been about 6 weeks now, I can assure you nothing makes sense in his class. His book isn't helpful at all. He says you have to do your homework to pass tests, but thats not really possible because his book is like ancient puzzle. Avoid this class, just a waste of money.
listen to him in class. write his notes. and do the homework. the test is the same as the homework.
Oh my GOD! Unless you are a savant in math you should find another class. He uses his own book that requires you to understand his thinking process. 3/4 of the class withdrew. The rest weren't allowed to or the class wouldn't count. Because of his class several students failed out of college. Save yourself.
get out while you still can. im serious. people dont even get double digits on his tests. they get 8's and 9's. switch out as soon as possible.
take him if you really want to learn math. You have to show work his way on tests. Gives u an automatic A for the class if you get a 100 or more on the final. He tells you the exact questions that are on it.He also lets u retake old exams if you get 20 points or higher on the next test. All of his test are out of 110 so there are bonus points.take him
Do not believe any of the positive comments. I am serious. It isn't worth it to take his class. There is no real way to appreciate and understand his class. You have to fool yourself into thinking his class is great. In the end you will just forget everything you learned and that's a major waste. Look for another professor.
not a good profosser..its true..he cant teach but he's really not as BAD as they make it look. If you reallyy try to study and do well (at least on the final) you can easily pass his class but dont expect to rmr anything you learned
He is a great mathematician, however, he cannot explain math to students who are not on his level, I think if the class would be full of people like him who have a Phd in math then everyone would understand. His book is full of gramatical and other errors, so if you don't understand him in class, the book is useless in clearing things.
RUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
NEVER EVER AGAIN
Alright, i went to this site to check out what this professor was gonna be like...and let's just say I made a mistake not listening to these guys...wanna pass his class? expect to go online, learn it yourself, translate it into his language, and pray, alot.
an absolute brilliant professor.... he just cant teach well. his class is extremely challenging and he wrote his own text book so if you don't understand him the book isn't a place to go. if you can get out of his class if you cant become well acquainted with the math tutoring center. don't sign up for his class unless absolutely unavoidable
He's way too intelligent to be a teacher if that makes sense. He assumes everyone is on his level, and sometimes has a tough time explaining concepts. He's not all bad though, his jokes are sometimes funny i guess... but that is not the important thing. It would be very hard to pass this class unless you're absolutely in love with math.
HE'S HORRIBLE!!! I DONT LIKE HIM AT ALL. I ASKED HIM FOR HELP ON A QUESTIO AND HE TOLD ME TO DROP THE CLASS AND GET INTO PRE-CALC. SO I TRANFERED TO ANOTHER TEACHER.
He's not that bad!true, his "own way" of doing math is a little obscure to people who aren't too talented, but he gives out a quiz during the first class that tells you if you belong in his class. he's very nice & kind when you ask him for help and gives credit for even improvised miss-hit answers.yet, hard class(and the tutoring center is useless)
He's a very intelligent man but he is quite boring because he expects his students to understand him. He gives the questions before the test and if you do the homework you'll do fine because his test questions are based on homework questions.
He seemed like a good professor in the beginning for me, but at the end I realized I didn't learn much from the class. I got over 90s in the first 2 tests, but since I messed up in the final, I ended up with a B in the class. In short, your grade is never 10 points more or less than final. So, basically do your best in the final...that's all
Prof Gerber's methods and book are somewhat confusing, but the class overall isn't that bad. To do well in the class you must actually do the homework, put problems on the board, do excel projects and work. People are too used to hs where everything is handed to them, college is a lot of self teaching. You have to put the time and effort in.
Not a hard class. There were 17 people in my class and 11 got As. Most of the time I had no idea what was going on in class, but before the test he tells you about each question on the test, so you just have to study those types of problems to do well. also gives you points for putting the hw on the board and easy extra credit projects.
He will eat your money and force you to drop the class. Life is too short. Don't let this guy ruin it. Avoid at all cost.
do not take.
he ridicules student who make mistake even though he make more errors when explaining the problems. Avoid if you value your life.....and GPA
He is one of the worst professor, I had ever come across in my life in college. Even if you try your best in his tests, his final is like everything. I had 90s in my tests before but because I couldn't do so well in the final, I ended up with a B. DON'T TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU HAVE TO! AVOID HIM AT ANY COST!
look for a way out immediatly after you find out u have him...no way out? DROP him! hes a very nice guy but cant teach for his life, he wrote his own text book which is even more confusing than he is, if you absolutly have no way out, he tells you whats on the tests right b4 them, so make sure u show up,learn everything on your own and good luck
TERRIBLE. And i'm being forced to take him again, FML.
Gerber is a great professor, hes too smart to be teaching us, hes a really nice guy, all u need to do is do and study the homework and ull do good on tests. ur grade if the final so do really good on that! btw he gives extra credit for putting up hw on the board and doing his excel projects which are pretty interesting and easy!
Professor Gerber is the worst. He doesn't care about his students. If you value your GPA...run. His text book is of no help as he wrote it. If you go to him for help, he won't. He is brilliant but can't teach. I am an honors student and got a D. I have always had A's in math. Go figure.
He's the worst professor ever, he is a smart professor but he can't teach
The hardest math professor ever. I used to love math, i am an accounting major. Dont take him unless you really know what you doing with Calculus. You either get an A or you fail. The class began with 35 people. It ended with 10.. probably less, i was one of the last people to withdraw. DONT TAKE, SAVE YOUR GPA!!! waste of 55 minutes! save yourself
Before taking this class I thought about dropping out in the last minute. Do not do this. The trick is not to fall behind and ALWAYS work out the HW problems. The practice will make the tests very doable and lead to a good grade. It is possible to get an A depending on how much work you are willing to put in. (Do the extra credit assignments too).
I took Barz in the Spring and failed. I honestly couldn't remember anything she taught. I retook it during the summer with him and got an A. Attendance is mandatory, you will be lost if you miss a class. Do the homework. and you should be fine.
Worst Professor ever I had to drop his Class I went to Tutoring and even they were confused with his work one guy told me "I dont do Gerber Math" which was a clear sign that this man makes up his own math methods. He's a very smart guy i give him that he just Can't teach to save his life.
This guy is the worst math teacher I have ever seen. He is a genius (he writes his own books) but they are no use to students beginning to do Calculus in college. I took Pre-Calculus in my last year of high school and I got a perfect grade on it (100's on all quizzes, hw, and tests). I failed my first test here. Worst. EVER.
Honestly is a very fair teacher. People just complain because they actually have to work in this class. You can't sit and not do anything. Work out the homework and all will be fine. Very nice man. Fair and tests are very straightforward. Sorry kids. You have to actually work for some of your grades.
Honestly I think he is quite possibly the worse math professor you could that. I am not against him personally at all or but just against his teaching which i feel is terrible. I tried to go to his office for help and he didn't help me at all. DO NOT TAKE EVER
He smells terrible and doesnt know how to teach. I had a 0 average in his class after like 4 weeks, I dropped the class and now have an A with my new professor. Hes deaf, smells bad, and gives no partal credit... Dont take him... I cant explain how bad this man smells.... its disgusting... plus he cant teach
No, just no.
worst professor on campus....
Worst Professor I've ever had. Extremely unhelpful. If you take him, be prepared to teach yourself everything.
Worst professor ever. He requires you to buy the textbook that he wrote for Stj only so you can't find it anywhere else. And the book sucks; it's full of words, no distinct sections or anything like that. Highly not recommended.
this is the worst math teacher i have ever witnessed. does not know how to teach. you will get a bad grade if you were a c-b+ student in HS. Do NOT go through with this class, drop immediately and switch to a different class!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Worst professor I've even had in my whole life. I'm really good at math but I had troubles understanding him. Grades homework that are way too hard and he always says himself that you don't even need to know that. Still counts on you average tho. :(
Worst professor I ever had! I really tried to do well. I went to the math center and they said they have special tutors for him because he is just weird!! he has his own book that no one understands! he is not helpful! dropped his class after 3-4 weeks. GREAT DISSAPOINTMENT!
I took 2 of his classes. He is the toughest math teacher at STJ. Go to every class, and work your butt off. The tutoring center can't help you b/c they don't understand the work he does. In some of his classes he has his own textbook, which is full of errors, like his class notes. If you show him u are trying, by going to office hrs, he will help u
Homeworks are out of 5 points and count towards a exam grade. Choose 10 questions per hw. Easy right? Wrong! All hard as hell. Why? Because he made the damn textbook. Exams in general were hard as well. If a person asks a reasonable question or doesn't understand a topic, he just shrugs it off and says "That's baby/high school stuff."
nice guy, bad teacher.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. He makes you buy his text book and does the problems but he'll do them three different ways than what he did in the text so it's so confusing. Homework is unclear and hard and that's what he bases his homeworks on. It amazes me that St. John's even has him work anymore
I will be very blunt about the issues that I had with this professor. He was a very neglecting man who was either always too fast with his work or confusing. Also another very important issue that hit me hard was his attempt to make money off of his textbooks. He legitimately spent at least ten minutes a day saying that you need to buy his book.
This class was TORTURE!!! If you have taken calculus before then you can handle it. If you haven't it is not worth taking his class. He will RUIN your GPA.
This man is Dr Gero, the creator of perfect cell and androids 13,14,15,16,17,18,19. His textbook has all the plans he used in their making
This man is one of the worst teachers in the world. He keeps saying how easy the final is yet you dont have enough time to finish the thing let alone do well on it. Horrible, AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Not the professor you want to take as his methods of solving a problem is confusing. Tutors don't help. If you're taking this course, be ready to do self study as there will be times where you get lost. His book is wierd to understand. Again, you can take a different professor for the same course but if you want to take him its up to you
Probably like no other Professor you've had but very straightforward in grading. Work hard, you'll be fine.
Please do yourself a favor and drop from his class within the first week. He is the worst professor in the history of teaching. He did not teach at all and a month during the semester more then half of the class withdrew. A 1 doesnt even do the justice considering he should not even be teaching. Gerber is a disgrace to St. Johns University
Professor Gerber wrote his own textbook, so if you cannot understand what he teaches in class, good luck figuring it out on your own! After several Pharmacy students failed his midterm, he made it clear that they should drop his class. Did not suggest tutoring or offer extra help. Take this class over the summer with a different professor!
don't you ever take his class never do this to yourself
His tests are extremely hard, but he gives you the questions. If you have no prior calculus knowledge, do not take this class. He doesn't give you a basic calculus foundation before making you answer problems high school calculus teachers would cringe at. Some homeworks are just impossible. He expects you to know too much for a Calculus ONE class.
Gerber is by far the worst teacher at SJU. If you are in this class then drop immediately. He does not clarify anything, if you ask a question then he will yet at you for not understanding something so "simple." He wrote his own textbook so you cannot learn the class on your own, and he doesn't teach conventional calc so tutors won't help either.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! Uses the textbook he wrote himself, which is very unclear. His lectures are unclear, just like his textbook. Impossible to pass if you haven't taken Calc in High School. Even a math major received an F from this class. Do all homework assignments in textbook, they're an easy 5 pts.
The course is pretty decent and straightforward. sometimes you have to practice to get it right. test questions were directly from homework and although there were some errors in the textbook, he did correct it when we went over the concepts and did practice problems, sometimes i relied on other calc-1 books but it was pretty similar. Good teacher.
worst
Terrible.... just absolutely terrible. Stay away no matter what.
Worst professor ever. Smart man, awful teacher. Math is done his way or expect an F. Don't think anyone passed his tests. Went to the tutoring center for help and they told me he was making us do Calc 3 when I was in calc 1. Never teaches in class just shows you problems with no explanation and gets mad when you ask questions. Awful. Just awful.
Do assignments after every class, go to the class and study you will get an A like me. Ask him question, he will help you go through it. Only thing is he writes his textbook and you need to buy it because HW are in it. Of course, you can share with classmates.
Honestly, just don't even take this class. I took calculus in high school and slayed that class. But this guy legit made this class ridiculous. If you have prior knowledge in calculus, you'll be ok. Just do the homework. At first, you don't really need to show up to class, but when he gets into calculus, I would recommend showing up.
You NEED to pay attention, don't miss class Many of these kids don't want to put in the effort to pass, they expect to be spoon fed and they fail the class. If you get lost, ask IMMEDIATELY. DO the homework! It sucks, I know, but its essential to learn math. Especially Prof. Gerber's class, he's got a learning curve for his methods, but they work.
WORST TEACHER. Started with 11 kids and 1 week later we only have 6. 2 of which failed and had to retake the course in summer.
I will admit-the man smells foul-but other than that his class isn't hard. Just do the work and you'll pass. Homework is simple enough, but it may get tedious with his special format that is required. Other than the fact he smells like donkey balls in the desert in the middle of July, he's cool.
Worst class ever. Took Calculus previously in high school so I got by but didn't learn a thing. Lectures the whole class, doesn't explain problems and gets mad when students don't understand. I recommend switching as soon as you see his name on your schedule.
The man writes his own book with his "unique" teaching methods. His book makes the courses you take harder, his a very smart man but terrible at teaching.
His lectures are completely pointless. He makes you buy the textbook that he wrote himself. The textbook makes absolutely no sense and has so many errors. If you work really, really hard you can manage to get an A. But if you're not willing to put in the work, don't even bother taking the class.
Very poor teacher. He just writes on the board and doesn't explain how to do it he just expects you to do it. If you think you can pass this class by reading the textbook you're wrong because it is unclear.
Gerber is not someone you want to take unless you're someone who is gifted at math. This was my first time learning statistics and I struggled. All he does is copy problems from the textbook onto the board and "explains" them. The homework can be kind of tough as well. Overall don't take him. One midterm one final, nothing else.
3/4 of my class dropped him the third week. He is rude and does not explain his work. There is a reason there are specific tutors for him at the library. I would bring my homework once a week for them to go over and they struggled as well. Most times he gave us calc 3 questions while in calc one. The tutors coudlnt even solve them. Don't take him.
Honestly, he isn't as bad as people say he is. He tells you the specific type of questions are on each exam and even lets you use a cheat sheet. Questions are very straightforward. You will do well if you attend class, study, and do the hw.
Honestly not that bad 3 tests and a final 5 point homework due every class Pretty easy and straightforward if you pay attention and do the homework
If you took calc in high school the class will be pretty simple. Not an easy A but if you do all your HW with some effort, you should be fine. Get an A on the final and you will get an A for the course!! This class is not for lazy people, but it is worth it.
I am a math major, and he is by far the hardest math professor that I have ever taken. AVOID at all costs. His textbook is AWFUL and his grading criteria is very strange. It does NOT matter if you get As or even take all of the homework and tests. The ONLY thing that matters is the final. I only got a B because I worked my butt off for final.
If you miss any days you're screwed. His explanations aren't very simple or easy to unserstand. Talks too quietly. He's very off putting in that he acts snobbish-ly superior
He honestly isn't that bad. Yes, you will most likely struggle at the beginning, but the main thing that matters is how you do on the final. If you keep the tests you take & study your mistakes from those, its easy to get an A on final. Your final grade is always within 10 pts of your final, even if you have a F, you have great chance to get A or B
SUPER HARD.5
AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS! He is very unclear and doesn't explain things very well. Lectures the entire class time and gets mad when you don't understand a problem. If you see you have him next semester, switch out of that class immediately.
American Horror Story: Leon Gerber's Math Classes. Beware. Switch out. FAST. LEAVE. FLEE. Doesn't even give you a syllabus. You're just left dazed, depressed and confused. Also, the homework doesn't even make sense and he's never able to solve it either BUT HE WILL STILL GRADE IT. RUN FAR AWAY.
If you're in pharmacy and have him then drop/change IMMEDIATELY. worst case scenario, withdraw entirely and take it later because he will ruin gpas. it doesnt matter if youve taken stats before it wont work. hes extremely quiet, grades harshly, doesn't teach well, and only counts the two exams
Honest comment: This isn't an easy class, but it's not impossible. The quizzes (6) are easy as long as you go over notes and the text. For the final hang on to the quizzes. (He lets you know what is most likely to appear on it) I dedicated at least 3 hours to do hw and days to go over quiz sections, but it paid off: A Be patient reading the text
One of the worst professors ever. Unless you're ready to put in 6/7 hours everyday, don't bother with him. Lectures are useless, there's a lot of homework which is mostly busy work because they aren't like what's on the exam. The review session before test-day is essentially your only saving grace, things he mentions there are what's on the exams.
As I write this his grade is a 1.8, which is honestly a little to high. In all seriousness I took this class it being my first exposure to calculus. His teaching and grading criteria were completely ridiculous. Homework was heavy and he makes you buy his own textbook riddled with mistakes, bad practice problems and poorly written. Don't take!
He's one of the harder teachers I had. He wrote his own book and makes you use it in every class. There are mistakes in the book and he makes a lot of mistakes in class. Wants the work to be done his way and only his way. If you do it a different way he calls it bad math. Also sit very close to the classroom because he talks very softly.
He makes the math way more difficult than it has to be. You can barely understand him. He doesn't make you feel comfortable to ask questions. His teaching techniques are horrible, he moves so quick, very hard to keep up with and understand. He doesn't throughly explain things. He makes it very difficult to do well.
Honestly, although Gerber is quiet confusing at times, he truly is not as bad of a professor as the other comments make out to be. Rather he has quiet an interesting method of teaching, which if one doesn' get, they could simply learn themselves as it is not that hard. I would recommend his class. However, if you not willing to do work, you shouldn
Professor Gerber's class was very tough. On the first day, there were 35-40 students in the room, but by the end only about 8 students were in the class because the rest dropped. He's demanding, but I would take him again because he helps you grow as a student by challenging you. He values hard work and I recommend going to see him in his office!
Only take this class if you have taken calc before in high school, otherwise, it would be hard to pass. He moves very fast and did a lot of calc 2 in calc 1. His textbook is a mess and very difficult to work through for the hw, but it just takes time and LOTS of patience. HW is graded, but quizzes are very fair and he gave extra credit classes.
His book makes zero sense and the homework will have you begging for mercy. This is coming from a guy who managed to get an A in the class. He is truly a nice person as well as a genius but a flat out terrible teacher.
There are many reviews that show that he is a tough grader. But honestly, it's not impossible to get an A in the class, he gives quizzes every two weeks, homework every class and one final. Even though you don't do well on the quizzes and homework, there's a chance to receive and A in his class which is to get 80% or above on the final.
He is a math expert. He teaches at an extremely fast pace and is difficult to follow. The textbook is a must, because you will use it in class to follow lessons, as well as for homework (ALOT). The textbook is also hard to understand, so you really need to work for your grade. If you can avoid taking him, than do so, but if be prepared to WORK!
Mathematical genius but not great teaching. Attendance isn't mandatory but highly recommended if you want to keep up with material. If you took calculus before then you should have no problem. The books are a must since that's what the lessons and homework come from. Quizzes every other week, about 5 questions but you can select any 2 you want.
Stay away. Do not even look at this page a second time. Taking this professor's course is absolutely the biggest mistake you could make at any point in your college career. You will not learn anything in this course. It is not worth it to learn his method of calculus. If the prof is reading this; i will continue to succeed in spite of your threats.
Hes the worst calculus professor. He will take off points if you dont do it his way.
ur grade is basically what u get on the final. he is not a good professor. he does not explain anything. when you ask him a question he just does something else.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS, especially if youve never taken Calc before. I sit in the front row, and I still have to yell at him if I have a question. If you even want to bother getting his attention and ask a question, he wont even answer what you want to know. Its his way or the high way, he swears by his methods and his own book. Dont take this!!
he does not explain anything. i pay to teach myself. his tests are ridiculously difficult. honestly, he should get fired. he gave me the hardest time in calculus and i just don't need to be struggling in this class because the professor cannot teach
If things are not done his way then he will take off so many points for it. He also always talks about how high school teachers and how they don't teach enough almost every day.
Unless you're already a math genius, this class will be torture. I came in with calculus experience but this man managed to make it twenty times as difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Will take off points on homework for not doing the problems "his way". "His way" is taught in his self-made textbook. Does not explain concepts well in class, and when asking questions it is very difficult to get his attention. Wasn't a good look when I saw actuarial science majors who already took Calc in HS struggling.
If you are good at math you can get away with an A. He is hard. He goes fast. His office hours are only 30 minutes so go to tutoring sessions. Homework is due every time the class meets. No tests and there are quizzes once a week.
Worse teacher ever. I dropped his class after the first week. I tried so hard to like him and could not. He gave me a 0 on a homework assignment because he didnt like the format I used when all the questions had the right answers. Is insane and probably the worse Professor ever. DO NOT TAKE so glad I dropped his class.
hardest math class i've ever taken and i am good at math. that's all i'm going to say
Gerber is hard to understand in class but if you go to his office hours they might help you. Homework due every class and quiz every week. The final is similar to all the quizzes. Its possible to pass but it takes a lot of work and dedication. Also, his textbook is next to impossible to understand. I would recommend not taking him if possible.
I don't have enough characters to describe how bad this professor is. Made my life miserable and I had to go to the helping center to get home work done . He is a tremendous jerk, he'll tell you that is "here to help" and then yell at you for no reason. Anyways, get the quizzes' answers to ace the final and you can manage to get a good grade.
we didn't pick him in the first place then the school switch him into our class since nobody pick his class. there were like 5 people left in his class after the first day cus everyone drop out. Dude makes math way harder to understand and demand you to use the calculator as his damn way which was extremely confusing. don't take his class!!!!!!!!!!
lots of tests and homework you cant understand what he's teaching super hard had to drop the class and change my major because of this class haha avoid at all costs he will not help you
Worst class Ive ever taken! Hes very good at math but terrible at explaining and teaching it. He wrote his own textbook that you have to buy for $60 and its no help at all! Because of the lockdown he didnt teach us either, but instead made us look at his confusing textbook. When I found my own methods of solving he gave me a 0 and didnt pass me
Gerber's class was a lot of work. He wasn't the best, but he wasn't the worst. I had taken calculus in high school which honestly helped me out a lot with his class, so if you took calc in high school and somewhat understood it, you should be fine for his class. There is homework everyday that takes hours to finish. Many people still pass with an A
Gerber is almost impossible to hear and understand. His handwriting is also borderline illegible as he writes in chalk very fast. I would not take this class ever again.
Through my years of college I have taken many classes more fundamentally difficult than this one, and yet this has to be the toughest class I have ever taken. Homework is so tough, comes straight from the textbook he wrote which contains many errors. So, based off of that you know it is a scam. If you have a chance take literally anyone else.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is a horrible teacher and it's almost impossible to understand what he's saying. The textbook was made by him and is also impossible to understand. He has handwritten hw due every class, and it's NOT graded on completion. Quizzes every week and he is not afraid to call you out when you hand it in.
I have never experienced a class like this before. Not sure what he was saying at any given point of the semester. He talks into the board and rarely explains the concepts enough to understand the problems. He gets irritated when you dont understand something too. I personally would recommend you find any way not to take him. Its not worth it
Gerber does not use the present day math rules or formulas. instead he uses very old methods and he wrote his own textbook based on those methods. we aren't allowed to use new methods
Hardest class ever. He makes you buy his textbook, which is full of errors. He makes Calculus 1 the hardest class. Don't recommend him, take someone else to save your grades.
Felt like he was teaching himself the material instead of the class. Made his own textbook, but he gives answers to the odd questions in the back of the book and provides a solution manual. Quiz every other week. As long as you show up and do your homework, you should do fine.
Hardest class ever. He doesn't even know what he's saying half the time.
