OMG WORST BIO TEACHER EVER!!! do NOT take his class. he is just awful!! if you HAVE to take his class, text book is a must.

Teaches only to his favourites in the class. That is, if he can teach at all. Real bad communication skills, awful person, conflicts with many students. Many good students have dropped his 210 class. They advise, you do the same or avoid him altogether!!!

Our class mid term avg was around 51%,when most teacher try for a 60% class avg. He's the worst teacher I've ever experienced @ Douglas. Totally unclear of what he wants from you. Has only an hour of office time so his availibility sucks. offers extra hand out, but you have to e-mail him for them.

This class was a waste of my time and money. Mr. Guppy lacks teaching skills. His style is cocky and arrogant, perhaps as an attempt to hide the fact that he probably doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time. He accepts constructive criticism, but then doesn't improve/change anything.

Mr Guppy is a horrible teacher. He reads from a slideshow and doesn't explain any of the material. He gives out 2 different quizzes, 1 hard & 1 easy so you are in trouble if you get the hard one! If you are new to Biology, RUN! Prepare to work VERY HARD! He must hate his job =|

I overheard Leon in the lab referring to students who were struggling, as struggling because they were "dumb," his exact words. Like others have said, if you're strong in Biology, he'll teach to you, and if you're not, he'll only teach to you "because he has to." Nice example, he sets for the Biology department and for students, in general...

BAD. He is a horrible teacher and very insensitive. You basically have to learn all of the material. PLUS he takes marks off if you spell things wrong and use abbreviations. ex) RBC. Red Blood Cell. (He WILL take marks off...)

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... He is the worst! Cannot teach, expects you to know everything for the quiz, I mean EVERYTHING. His review packages, half are nothing related to bio. If you love bio, do not waste your time with this guy!

Very lazy teacher and make mockery out of his students. Doesn't know how to teach. Very disturbing personality to have as a teacher. Teachers are suppose to encourage us and teach us to become better at the course. Instead he wants you to suffer and fail. Very bad teacher.

EXTREMELY hard grader. On weekly quizzes you'll only get full marks if written word for word in his lectures otherwise he'll give you 0. Highest mark in our midterm was 62% and lowest mark was 24% LOL. He only gives you lecture slides AFTER the class otherwise he expects you to sit there and listen to him. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!

more than half of our class is getting 50% or lower after the midterm. He's so unclear and unapproachable. If you want a good grade, don't take him!

I usually give profs the benefit of the doubt. I thought I had bad profs in the past, but this guy beats them by a landslide. His weekly quizzes are insanely difficult, he is rude, arrogant, & tells students with anxiety who ask for help to get over it. -10/10 would not recommend.

A perfect example of a very smart person that just shouldn't have gone into teaching. High intelligence doesn't correspond to being an excellent teacher Mr. Guppy. One more thing Leon has literally zero humility as a virtue. The one time I corrected him he wouldn't admit he was wrong. Even after a google search proved I was right...

Overall disorganized and unclear. I dont even know why he chose to become a teacher; every time hes giving a lecture he looks like he wants to be there as much as the students do. more than half my class was failing, and i had to dedicate most of my time memorizing his messy slides just to barely pass the weekly quizzes. avoid at all costs

He is incredibly rude, condescending, and entirely unhelpful. Gotta pee during class? He'll try to block the door if you get up to leave. Have a question ? Be prepared for him to get annoyed at you for not understanding. He loves to write huge giant NOs and THIS IS NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR all over your quiz. Do yourself a favour and AVOID HIM.

If you have the chance to dodge this prof, run away. He reads from his powerpoints, gets annoyed if you don't understand what he's explaining, and you'll most likely fail his weekly quizzes unless you write your answers exactly like how he explained it. It feels as if he genuinely wants everyone to fail his class and WE ALL DID! Thanks, Leon!

The worst in British Columbia. In my experience I have never seen an instructor like him. He is the worst in his job. He will abuse his power, talk down to you, won't teach you. His goal seems like he wants students to fail and he gets pleasure doing that. I wish I could say a lot of bad words for him but they will take off my comments. SHAME

Dr. Guppys course is based on very tough weekly quizzes - trick questions and hes looking for VERY specific word for word answers. A midterm - class average was a fail. And a final exam/lab final (written by all the 1110 professors - the saving grace) no electronics allowed In class. This man loves a good argument, avoid if possible.

Again, tough grader. Loves to have trick questions and double negatives. Class average was often a fail. Lectures off his slides - wont release them until after hes finished them.

Worst professor Ive ever experienced. Doesnt have lectures, just posts PPs with voiceover, reading whats written on the slides and has online q&a sessions that leave everyone more confused than ever. Quizzes are worth more together than the final, and a ridiculous marker. Doesnt care and is very rude to students. Had to drop the course.

I have Guppy during the pandemic and I can easily say this is my hardest course. Im currently failing while my other classes are B average. He gives no homework but has 1 quiz every week which is insanely difficult. He doesnt teach and instead makes 120 slide ppts that he reads off of directly. He also will not answer questions you have EVER.

this class is ridiculously hard. his lectures are scattered and dry and take hours to get through. weekly quizzes have trick questions to see if you'll cheat and he marks them wrong if your wording is off. overall I wouldn't recommend.

Guppy is rude and condescending. His lectures are extremely disorganized and take hours to get through, and usually you have to do outside research to understand what he is talking about. He interrupts people when they are trying to ask questions, and treats students like they are stupid. He also has a lack of technological understanding.

Guppy's lectures are disorganized & hard to follow. His quizzes and exams require explanations that must be entirely correct (partial marks are rare). He is unfriendly and cold in his emails and makes you regret contacting him. He has a dry British wit which was entertaining but unfortunately overall, I would not recommend him.

Worst prof I've ever had. He feels so smart & expects us to understand all and mocks students who don't understand, very rude. His lecture is confusing, useless PPT & textbook, heavy lecture, & tough marker. Half of the class are failing, quizzes & test is insanely difficult. He never answer questions, gives trick questions that intent you to fail.

Worst professor by far. Marks entire questions wrong due to the smallest things such as your wording. He's condescending and rude to his own students. Avoid him at all costs any positive reviews found here are definitely fake or written by him lol.

I saw him in a supermarket recently and recognized him because his class was the only class I ever took at DC before transferring to SFU. And this was 10+ years ago! I see he hasn't changed much... I recall that he expected answers to test questions to be literally regurgitated literally word for word from the textbook (C & P "Biology" 8th ed.)

He is pretty bad at his job. A perfect example of poor educational system.

Not a good prof. He shames you for asking him questions. I filed a complaint against him with education ministry.

Now at SFU and with 30 courses under my belt, I can confidently say Leon Guppy is so far the worst professor of my undergrad. He is rude and condescending in his emails, brags about his educational background, quizzes/ exams are ludicrously difficult & part marks are RARE (even if you have most of the answer). Take ANYONE else (Lynette Sigola).

He really needs to have a reality check with the things he demands from his students. For our midterm he told us there would be "3 simple short answer questions" and when he was going over the answers he wanted (and no one got right) he shows us this document with 4-6 paragraphs per answer for EACH question. This is nuts.

Yeah don't ever take a course with him as a teacher, you will 100% get a horrible mark. This man is proud that he makes his course so difficult that not many get an A. You got the right answer for his paragraph questions? Nope you lost a mark for spelling or for forgetting one word that doesn't hinder the answer. Save your GPA.
