HIGHLY RECOMENDED. His tests are fair, and his lectures really make you understand chemistry. Friendly, approachable, always willing to help. Wrote the textbook used, which is also GREAT... clear and filled with practice problems and clear explanations.
As stated below, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I really learned a lot in the class. An all around nice professor who cares about his students. You must study for tests though. Group studying is recommended! :)
I HATED EVERY MINUTE OF THAT CLASS. HE IS THE TYPE OF TEACHER WHO LOOKS AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE DUMB IF YOU SHOULD ASK HIM TO REPEAT OR EXPLAIN SOMETHING. TALKS DOWN TO YOU. AVOID THIS CLASS LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!
I find the professor very helpful. It gives a lot of examples and analogies to help students understand the basic chemistry concepts. You do have to study for his tests, but they are fair and an accurate assesment of the material.
He turns Nutrition into a Chemistry class! His tests are not very straight forward, questions can be "tricky". Thought he was great in Che 107, but for this one, ?
he is a great prof but his voice will put you to sleep completly monotone. take an enegy drink to class. you will be fine if you study for his tests
Reads notes from a projector and it starts to get boring after awhile. Grade is based on 4 tests which are 25 multiple choice questions and you might be saying oh thats easy. Think again. Probably one of the hardest tests i've ever taken before. Just be sure to study really hard if you want to pass!
Dr. Hageman makes chemistry easy. For someone just starting out with chemistry, he is the perfect instructor. He has been teaching chemistry for a LONG time and he knows how to make chemistry understandable. I think he talks to the students like they are 5-years-old, but oh well the information gets through!

HORRIBLE! He just reads off the overhead! Tests are impossible...pages and pages of notes and then just 25 questions. VERY boring lecture. Turned Nutrition into chemistry.
Dr. Hageman's lectures are stimulating and his presentation of the material is excellent. He is the kind of professor I hoped to have in college and I always looked forward to going to class.
Loved learning chemistry from Dr. Hageman. Looked forward to his lectures because he made the material so interesting. His tests were very fair. He is a master on the subject of chemistry and more than willing to help students during office hours. He is simply the best!!!
A great teacher. Loved this class.
great teacher
Great professor. Show up for class and pay attention. Read the "highlights" that he requires for the tests. Tests can be a little unclear, but he is very willing to help.
Follow along with him, do his assignments, tests and quizzes are from your readings and his notes - he is thorough. Can get good grades if you do the above. Is willing to help, if you ask.
Dr Hageman very passionate about both Chemistry and teaching. He loves to share his knowledge and is great at making an otherwise boring subject and difficult course paletable. The course is challenging and requires much studying...don't take it until you're ready and able to put in the time. I would highly recommend this professor!
GREAT TEACHER! Makes Chemistry for the non-major as easy as possible. Has plenty of office hours, he encourages students "to visit" if they need additional help.Uses an overhead with his notes to keep lecture on track. He wrote the book so his lectures follow the book exactly, which is great if you have to miss a class. Tests are hard, but fair!
loves what he does
Very boring, nutrition is a basic level chemistry course, this course needs to be revised and testmaterials are not clear.
Great teacher. He really teaches. GREAT teacher. I never thought I'd understand chemistry. Thanks to him, I do.
Excellent teacher. He cares about students and explains everything very clearly. Friendly too.
Very Boring. But easy. As long as you study his notes and read the highlight topics your fine.
Outstanding teacher. He really teaches and explains the material. If you have no experience in chemistry and really want to understand it, I'd recommend this class. The best teacher I have had at BCC, by far.
The best professor BCC has, I wish he was also available to teach chemistry II. In fact I had him for Nutrition and learned more from him about chemistry in that class, then I had in Chemistry I.
His test are nothing like his ecture and notes. Don't be fooled by him at all. I had him twice and am not going to take him for nutrition. I do not recommend him at all.
His test are not based on his lectures. On our final he forgot to teach something and still gave his the test without any help. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROF.
Several test questions weren't covered during lecture. Did not clarify certain topics when asked. I would not recommend this professor, unless you enjoy stress.
Published his own book containing his own theories. You MUST use his theories/crazy methods to pass this class. Tries to relate Chemistry to other things in life, however, there is no relevance whatsoever. You never review the tests you have taken. If you want to see your tests you have to visit him during "office hours." Do NOT take this class.
Had him for Chemistry. Half of our class failed and we know this by the grading sheet it set around. If half your class was failing then doesn't that concern you how your teaching.
If you are willing to study I would recommend his class. I just took the class for review of Chemistry before I went into gen chem 1 and im glad i did because I know it will help me in chem 1 i learned a lot. if you arent ready to study dont take this class! its not an easy A you need to study! but overall i like him hes a really nice guy
Gives A LOT of examples. He goes off on ridiculous tangents and somehow manages to tie them back to what he's teaching. He's great. But beware: He encourages students to skip quizzes and take them when they're ready, but neglects to mention that ALL make-ups occur on one day (so if you miss 3 quizzes, you have to take them all during one period).
Chemistry is incredibly difficult and Hageman doesn't make it any easier. He wrote the text used in class none of it makes sense. Doesn't seem to apreciate when students ask questions and if you go for extra help he repeats what he's already said in class. Take Jessica Schyuler instead.
spends so much time making analygies. no one is comfortable enough to ask questions in class. tests are nothing like what he is teaching.
I was very nervous before taking chemistry, but Dr. Hageman made it interesting and fun. Test questions were all covered in lecture and outlines. Just go to class and do your work, you'll get a good grade.
You definitely need to pay attention and have no distractions (ie, phones, friend). If you read and take notes, you will ace his tests. If you ask questions, make sure they are relevant! Really breaks everything down as simply as he can. He loves what he does and made it interesting for me,which a teacher loving what he does makes a huge difference.
THE BEST!
Not a nutrition class you would expect, it's very chemistry based and he mentions it from the start. I only took it because it is a required course for my major. Study his lecture notes and look over the objectives in his syllabus. Don't forget to read the textbook highlights. You'll pass his test if you do all of those. The test aren't so easy!
Fun teacher who connects everything to everyday life. There arent too many questions on the tests but they are easy. I learned a lot. JUST dont let your cell phone go off! =0
Nutrition: I enjoyed his lectures & analogies. However, his tests each have only 20 questions so there's little room for error. Also, test questions were a bit tricky/ arbitrary sometimes. Must visit him during office hours to ask questions or to see your tests.
He is a great teacher in that he truly cares about the students. Numerous times throughout the semester he has made it a point to always encourage the student to stay on task and enjoy college while you can. Thoroughly explains every sentence, and uses a lot of analogies. Do the practice questions and you'll do fine.
Had him for a teacher in 1994. He wrote the text for the class and it was incredibly concise. This professor was easily one of my top 5 all time teachers and I have a ton of college under my belt. A rare gem.
Took him for nutrition because it was a nursing requirement. He gives 4 quizzes all 20 questions so don't make a mistake. He refuses to curve them or to give any extra credit whatsoever. Its a very chemistry based lecture full of weird little stories. A nice man, but not the best teacher. If your cell phone rings he demands you leave no exceptions!
Definitely knows his stuff, but rambles on with stories that don't really have to do with anything. Doesn't really explain anything (just repeats what he's already said). Tough tests, tough grading. Honestly, I avoid him like the plague when signing up for classes each semester. I would recommend any other Chem professor.
Very bad professor.U have to studdy whole books and licture to pass this class .
Dr. Hageman is great! He is very clear and goes over the information very slowly so you understand it. He uses analogies so you understand the subject matter better. If you don't understand he will go over with you during office hours. He gives one Extra Credit quiz during the semester. One complaint is that some topics he doesn't review.
he's great. very clear
He's so condescending and I really didn't like his class at all. His quizzes aren't hard though. Only 25 questions. And no final. But his lectures make me sleep.
His tests are super easy, you have Have HAVE to study though because the tests are from his notes and some may be the little details. Can start to ramble in his lectures but even if you hate chemstry you can pass this class with flying colors with some TLC of studying.
Lecture style is very slow and very repetitive, but unmistakable. He tends to oversimplify with his analogies. I had trouble staying awake in class, but I got an A because the class is easy and his textbook is pretty decent. He's polarizing. Most people either hate or love him.
Goes very slow through his lectures, uses a lot of analogies. Lecture is kind of boring but the quizzes are pretty easy as long as you write down the notes and study them.
Very boring class. He speaks in a slow and monotone voice. He doesn't really explain things well but constantly repeats what he says. He does not follow the book(which he wrote). you have to see him during office hours to see your tests and get any extra help. Avoid having him as a teacher. He knows his stuff but does not make it easy to understand
I don't like hem at all.
If you study, read the chapters, follow his objectives, read the highlights, attend every class, and take thorough notes, you can get an A in this class. His lectures are easy to understand, and his tests follow his objectives exactly. I don't think it's possible to fail if you do the work.
I had Dr. Hageman for nutrition and Chemistry last semester. People say his tests are impossible, but they are not bad at all!! He wrote the chemistry book you use and it is fantastic. He was one of my favorites at BCC. He uses analogies to make topics more clear and they work! If you have the lucky opportunity to take his class, take it!!!
People either love or hate him. He uses a lot of analogies to explain concepts. He teaches slowly and simply. If you go to class and pay attention, you will pass. The text book is written by him and is very simple and helpful.
He is slow and boring with his teaching. He uses too many analogies that confuse you more than they help you. His tests are nothing like his notes. He wrote his own book. I went to a tutor and he spent more time correcting Mr. Hageman than being able to help me. Horrible teacher. I will never take a class with him again.
very hard class!! he only gives 5 tests with 20 questions each. No quizzes and LOTS to memorize
He was not easy. He used ditto sheets for everything, never wrote on the board and heDoes not teach. You have to teach yourself. His office hours are useless because he talks too much and tells stories. His ditto sheets were not on his test at all. Trust me don't take him. The entire class got an F.
I took him twice. I had tutoring, spoke with him and my note taking was on the side of OCD. I still failed each time. I took it along side the Lab which I got an A in. He would refuse to help you if you went a head of the lecture in the book. Telling you to wait but never going over your questioned materiel. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!!!!
Terrible teacher, goes off on tangents which have no bearing on the course, works until the last second of class. Tests are nothing like his notes, doesn't tell you to read the book.
Honestly one of the easiest classes I've taken. He goes over things so well and is more than happy to give tons of examples. I didn't pay much attention because i usually get things on the first try, but the other ways of explaining are helpful if you don't understand right away.
He gives five tests which are twenty questions each. He offers no extra credit or help, only tells you that you can use a tutor. What he teaches in a Ben Stein monotone voice with Mr. Rodgers looks and explanations which do not relate to chemistry, is not tested, he claims no assignments yet tells you to read the book which he wrote. Terrible!!!
If you weren't good at chemistry in high school, this prof. might not be the best choice for you. Taking notes is important BUT he only goes over practices equations only a few times and isn't really clear.. use youtube if you're confused.. and make sure you use do the additional practice questions at the end of the textbook to be ready for tests
I love chem & this was the most boring class I've ever taken. This man clearly needs to retire, I don't care if he wrote the textbook or not. Absolutely ridiculous. Feels like he's teaching a first grade class, not college level
Dr. Hageman is a brillant and excellent professor. You have to attend class, take notes, do practices on book, back of book and lab book. He is available after class for help too. When you take a test, visit him so you are able to see the test and receive feedback on the ones you answered incorrectly. Time and effort pays off.
Chem 101- His lectures are very long, boring. 4 tests, not related with the lectures. NEVER return the tests for review, if you have questions, you need to make an appointment and there is always 4, 5 other students waiting to see him (Lab, Nutrition). No extra credit, no H.W. Do not use email. Q. 13 fixed for A+ got D like most of the class.
Do not review tests. Tests questions are not related with his long lectures. Need to make appointment to ask for help and share the time with many other students from the different classes he teaches. RUN.
Lectures are long and boring. You could read the chapters and not go to class and do fine. He talks to the class like we are 10 years old and he seems annoyed when you ask questions.
Took his Chemistry class 2 times, passed with a D the first time and had to retake to get a C or better. Passed with an A the second time around. My advise: follow the course objectives religiously. If you study exactly what is listed on the objectives for each unit you will pass. Use the textbook for reference. Basically taught myself though.
Don't take him you will fail. No seriously you will fail. I took Chem in high school got an A took the lab got an A took his class and failed it. Took it the next semester and got A with another teacher. Seriously the worst teacher ever. Do not take him you will fail.
Dr. Hageman is a really great professor.
barely helps you, very strict rules, no enthusiasm at all.
He is very mono tone. He makes no sense half the time. It doesn't feel like a Nutrition class, it feels more like chem. I already took chem & i was looking forward to nutrition until the first day when he said he it will chem based. His lectures are so hard to follow because he goes off about random stuff that has nothing to do with nutrition.
He is an awesome teacher! Makes chemistry easy to learn!!
Don't take his classes. Just don't. I had him for Nutrition and learned absolutely nothing. Your entire grade in the class depends on what you get on 4, 20 question quizzes. You go to class and take pages upon pages of notes, he's boring and old, and goes off on rants that have nothing to do with what we're supposed to be learning.
His lectures are long and drawn out, he is so rude if you ask a question in class but so helpful if you go to his office hours. He really takes his lectures seriously so don't talk, let your phone go off, or come in late because he will stop until you're settled. The tests are so far fetched I studied so much and always barely passed.
I would just say to avoid this professor at all costs. He gets annoyed when you ask questions and if theres a person before you at his office hours you most likely will not get any help at all. Oh and if your phone goes off by accident... forget about it he will make sure the entire class knows it was your phone that went off lol. RUUUN!
Exams were impossible and my grade ruined my 4.0 GPA.
Buy his book from the bookstore it will be the only thing that will save you - Lectures have nothing to do with that is on the test. His tests are taken from the book and the practice questions after each chapter and in the back. Lectures are very boring - get ready to feel like you are back in kindergarten
Professor Leon Hageman has by far been the worst teacher I have had in all of my schooling career thus far. His tests are taken at the end of the period after he has taught you new material instead of giving the test in the beginning of class when the information is fresh from studying the night before. Gives no extra credit.
Rent the book for the last week then return it for free most website have free returns with refund before 15 days post delivery . The LAST test is open book for the last half. DO NOT MISS CLASS, WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN AND FLASHCARDS OR QUIZLET IS YOUR BFF. There's 4 tests. 25% of your grade EACH . HE DOES NOT CURVE . Tests are less than 30 questions
Only 1 month into Nutrition & it is unbearable. Goes on 20 minute tangents to dissect how much cholesterol is in serving sizes of foods. Chemistry heavy, but nothing makes sense. Notes are unclear and severely disorganized. I'm already dreading the exam. If this wasn't required for Nursing & no other class available, I would've dropped long ago. F-
Best professor I've ever had, explained everything so clearly. Loved his stories and analogies. I like that he didn't grade on a curve. Very fair in his tests and grading, telling students in the very first class what is expected of them. There was so much useful advice about life woven into his stories,I looked forward to his class.
worst teacher ever. every average/poor review on this site is correct. condescending, rambles on, lectures are unclear & unorganized. hageman should not be teaching at the college level, esp. for nursing students trying to learn nutrition. only 20 min to take 4 20-question multiple choice tests. study the objectives in the syllabus so you can pass!
I love this professor! Half of the class either loves him or despises him. But the people who hate him come up with the stupidest reasons to not like him. He teaches very slowly and goes over many examples to make sure we understand. He announces his office hours every week and mentions we can just drop in. He is a very blunt old man and it's great
Very monotone. Teaches from his notes on overhead. Can appear disorganized because notes are all in paragraph form (not a standard outline). Textbook required. A lot of at-home text reading that he does not cover in class will be on the tests. No quizzes, no extra credit. HATES cell phones and lateness. Do the readings & take notes you'll be fine.

One of the best teachers Ive ever had. I read the reviews on this site and was so scared for his first test. It literally took me 7 minutes to complete and I got an 100. As long as you take good notes and listen to his lecture, which I find interesting, then you will succeed!
Worst teacher ever! All he does is ramble on and tell stories, does not actually teach or explain. Only teaches from pre made nots that are just paragraphs and paragraphs and does not explain the material. If your gonna show up late don't go he will stop everything and stare you down. Get the book and teach your self! Only way to do it!
Take this class seriously!!! Do the practice questions in the book and remember every detail. It all piles up on one another so when he says memorize something, do it. Only grades you on 5 exams. Exams are after every 2 units so not bad at all. My class started out with 70 people and ended with at least 20. Just take the time to study, don't slack!
He is the best teacher I ever had. His lectures are outstanding. I got an A in the class.
Im not sure how you could fail this class. He goes very slow and uses examples for everything so that you understand. Also offers office hours for addition help. Your total grade is made up of 5 exams and 3 quizzes. Definitely monotone but he can be funny. Pay attention, study, and do the practice problems in the book and you will get an A easily.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! I am not the type of person to complain. I am a straight A student and I failed this class. Mr. Hageman is a boring and difficult instructor. He speaks in a monotone voice during every lecture and shows no interest in the topic or his students education. 75% of students in my class failed the test and we tried to report him.
Unless you have a background in Chemistry, DO NOT take Dr. Hageman. Every day is boring, long lectures where he tends to ramble on about irrelevant topics. Your grade is an average of 4 tests (only 20 questions each) and that's it. If you don't understand something, he talks to you like you're stupid. Got an A by the skin of my teeth. Just don't...
He is the reason behind of my reborn in chemistry. I do not care about long or boring lectures. This is college, we need to sit down and pay attention. Everytime i needed help, he did his best to help me. he even advised me about my distant future! On my hopeless days, he talked with me just like a father. He is a wonderful teacher!
Hope you have a good chemistry background taking this class. He doesn't explain things well and uses analogies for every single thing. He has 5 tests and thats all you have grading wise. I learned more about chemistry in a 10 minute youtube video than i did with him in two lectures. He really loves chemistry but he is not good at teaching chemistry
His test and notes do not jive, the examples and/or handouts are not related to the test at all. WILL NOT help, other than in the office, when asked for a handout he complained about how long it takes to get it uploaded to blackboard. His notes are clear and concise, however as said earlier they do not match the test.
Strongly suggest not taking this course unless you have a background in chemistry and math. The tests have nothing to do with the notes, the tests are extremely hard and professor makes it hard to ask questions in class during lecture and has very limited office hours. No matter how many times I memorized the notes we took the tests were still hard
Absolutely terrible. Worst professor I have ever had. Every good comment is wrong and every bad one is right. Never had below a B in my life and I failed this class. I showed up to every class and his lectures involve terrible stories where he tries to relate chem to life. Tests have nothing you learned in class, you literally teach yrself on test.
Took Professor Hageman in the Fall of 2017. Takes his time lecturing. Makes it easy to understand. Gives really good advice and recommendations on how to pass his class. Class is graded on 20 multiple choice exams for every 2 units. Offers one bonus exam on stoichiometry to raise 1 of your exams by 1 letter grade. Really helpful during office hours
Every class was an hour and twenty minute lecture, that tended to get off topic. Only took 4 tests all semester which would be the make up of your whole grade. No room for error or you fail the class. I would never recommend this professor to anyone. Absolutely awful.
Every bad review about this professor its right , literally difficult to just stay awake in this class... super boring and out of topic every class, does not make nutrition interesting and only 4 tests of 20 questions that you will fail if you don't memorize all the notes.. currently failing this class and disappointed .. DONT TAKE
CONS: endless analogies, gross oversimplification, and monotone voice. PROS: Relatively easy with extra study time and youtube videos, objectives are included to help you navigate what exact material you will need to know. Although it is helpful to try to cover every detail you learned. Tests are pretty simple.
I don't see how people on here think the notes aren't relevant to the tests, I never opened the textbook. I used notes and the lab workbook. Taking Math 075 prior to this definitely helped. If your last algebra class was in 10th grade and you got a C go spend some time with a tutor, same thing for reading comprehension.
Absolutely would not recommend this class. Professor was arrogant and would make students feel dumb in front class for asking questions. His office hours were limited. Youre graded on 4 tests and theyre only 20 questions each and theyre 10x harder than the practice examples he gives in class. Boring lectures spent rambling on ab random things.
i studied my butt off for all the notes he game and more. wasnt even on the test. didnt teach us about history for chaps 3,4,5 and put history notes on the test. only 1 person got an A in class but pretty sure she used her phone.
I took him for my nutrition class, he was awful. He always goes off topic during lecture. I just passed with a C by the skin of my teeth. The final is half open book. The tests are only 20 questions and are ridiculous. I had a test on chapter 9 but on the test there was a question from chapter 16 in the book. He talks to you like your a dumb child.
I really wanted to like him as a professor, he is a caring guy and will try to spend some time explaining things after class that dont make sense but he rambles a lot about things that dont pertain to what youre learning. He gives you 4 tests, 20 questions each and last exam has 10 of those 20 questions open book, theres no homework/assignments.
I do not understand how anyone can fail his class. He spells it out upfront, repeatedly, from Day 1. Its real simple; show up to class on time, copy his posted verbitum, read them daily, and youll ace his test. Tests are EASY! Test are clear cut
I straight googled his tests throughout the Covid 19 epidemic and he both tests he tried giving bad grades on
Reading these comments, It sounds like a lot of you want a magic pill. He is so unbelievably clear and easy that you barely have to put in the effort in studying. I read his notes thoroughly 2-3x a day and finished with a 98% for the class, no bs. If you cant pass this class easily, I really wouldn't consider University at all.
usually takes too much time explaining things but end up pretty nice. However, his test is a bit tough and he takes 5 tests after each 2 units. Just concentrate and you will pass easily. The best part? NO HOMEWORK!
I wouldn't say he's everyone's professor, but I really enjoyed his classes. Basically, everything's written down in paragraph format. At the end of about six or so sheets of paper, you test. He goes through it on projection line by line. Very old school, but tries to cater to all learning styles. You will also learn a bit about Brooklyn.
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone.!!!!!Your grades are all based upon tests. He offers no homework assignments or extra credit! He rambles about pointless stories during lecture. He expects you to teach yourself to pass his class. I had all As until i took this course. This was the most boring and useful class in my life.
Leon Hageman is the best professor of any science course I have ever had.
Perfect chemistry teacher
Hageman's class is no walk in the park, but engaging with his teaching style pays off. The textbook is a must-read, and using study aids like unstuck AI can be a game-changer for test prep.
