his accent wasnt the problem. he just didnt explain the concepts thoroughly. tests were very hard with mistakes. had to learn most of it from the book. very interesting class though! learned a ton.

Difficult to understand -- his accent AND how he explains things, very boring, grades hard, test wording is hard to understand. I would say read the book and skip the class, but he gives surprise quizzes once a week! Plan on struggling with this one!

Fabulous easy class!. Has a strong Chienese accent, but a good sense of humor about it. I went to class, did study guides he provided, followed paper directions and aced it all... papers are informal and interesting. Tests were all mc and straightforward

Do not take him, worst professor you will ever have. He does not seem to know what he is trying to teach and it does not help that you can't understand a word he says. Hard tests with material that he does not cover in class and is also not in the book.

The class is pretty difficult and hard to understand. Exams are difficult but there is homework and papers to make up for them. If you go to class and try hard, you can get an A. He is very helpful in office hours and tries hard.

He is extremely intelligent, and an excellent professor. He makes outlines for note-taking, and is very friendly and helpful. Anyone who says he's bad slept through class, or didn't want to be there to begin with. I can understand his accent just fine.

Communication skills are terrible. You can't understand one word that comes out of his mouth, and he is completley out of touch with anyone in his class, and he has extremely minimal control over the classroom. Professor Lou lacks professionalism.

The subject matter is pretty tough as its mainly about the body and not about psychology and his lectures are very boring. He is a nice guy though and trys to help students. Tests are not as bad as I thought they would be-- all multiple choice.

Class average on midterms was a 2.0, which shows how ridiculous his midterms are, and he drops the lowest of three midterms. Final is noticeably easier. Boring lecturer, awesome one-on-one guy. Hard to understand without his microphone. He talks about biology too much, stick to the psychology.

Professor Lou is difficult to understand at times, and the material is a lot more scientifically and biologically based than most psych classes. I don't understand biology well, and I did ok in his class. You don't need to read the book. Multiple choice tests weren't as bad as I thought they'd be.

For one, this is a lecture. A lecture with a man who hardly speaks English is ridiculous. If you get him, have fun trying to understand him. His tests are horrible, and he's too stubborn to adjust his teaching style. His help via email is pointless as well. And don't even think about office hours, they're worthless with him.

this prof is terrible! DON'T TAKE HIM! You can go to every lecture and still do bad on the tests. they are hard and his BB notes are more of an outline and half of the stuff isnt even on the exams. You can't add to his notes because of his poor english. He likes to argue with people and thinks he knows everything. Don't disagree with him.

Prof Lou was an ok prof. His accent wasn't too bad if you went to class and tried to understand it. He was generally clear, but had a hard time answering questions. He really knows his stuff but sometimes has a hard time conveying it the class. If you go to class, look at the powerpoints and study, you'll do fine.

It's nice because all his lectures are by powerpoint that he posts on blackboard, which means less notes to take. it's extremely important to go to class and pay close attention. the class is pretty interesting, and you do have to study but he gives great study guides.

I loved this class. You didn't really have to take notes because he put them online for you and the tests were almost word for word from the study guides. As long as you study what he lists on the study guide you'll do good.

Lay off Prof. Lou, I took him for PSY-101 freshman year and I loved him! So what if he has a bad accent, just go to class and you'll do fine. I signed up for him next year for PSY-361 (Perception) and I know how he teaches so I'm sure he'll be alright.

I would suggest not taking this class in a 3 hour session. It is an intersting topic but the professor is boring. Make sure you study but even if you study you might not do well and he might just say that you didn't show up to class all that much...which isn't true. Sorry a little fit right there.Try to avoid

BAD TEACHER, VERY UNCLEAR!! He posts the notes for class right before class so you have to wait to get them and he forgets to mention when you have assignments due. Also his answer to everything is READ THE BOOK even if thats what you have a question on.

I needed this as a requirement so I took. Prof Lou is a nice guy, and he really tries hard to make his lectures interesting, however, if you are looking for a lively, interactive class, this Prof is probably not for you. It is nearly impossible to communicate with him one on one. The topic is very dry. If you have a choice, I would go elsewhere

Lou has a habit of posting the power point slides he expects you to have for notes, about 20 minutes before class starts. So if you have a class right before his you don't have time to get them. He does not return hmwk before tests and the tests are hard because they don't seem to be related to what we talked about in class. Too much reading.

He can be challenging to understand. The most important thing, show up. Most homework is assigned and done in class. If you ain't there, then you get a zero. Attendance is not mandatory though. His exams are pretty easy, especially since he always hands out a study guide that is very helpful. I overall think he is a good, but boring, prof.

Nice guy, very unorganized. Thick accent makes it difficult to understand him. Notes posted right before class, and assignments were lengthy but graded on apparent effort. Don't expect any feed back or to get your papers back. LOTS of writing. Should be an SWS.

prof. lou is NOT one of my favorite professors. he is difficult to understand at times, which makes the long, boring lectures confusing. he is also very impersonable, and won't let you make up missed assignments that were assigned in class (which was often). only good thing-he had great study guides which helped on exams.

I really had a hard time with this class. He does the ppt notes which are cool, but the tests were hard. The random assignments do help your grade though. One problem I had was he never replied to emails or anything. Hard to get a hold of if you need help. He has broken english, but you get used to it.

His Perceptions class wasn't at all what I expected in the Psychology department. The first few weeks of material and the test are all about the anatomy and biology of the eye. The few weeks I was in there, it was challenging to understand him [heavy accent/broken english]. I dropped the course; it's not for everyone.

He doesn't speak English well which makes him extremely hard to understand. He speaks in monotone and very quietly so his lectures have no purpose. The language barrier is definitely an issue because he often uses the wrong words for things. Ex. influence vs. inference

I had read these comments before taking prof Lou, and was very worried because of what people had written. I am 2/3 of the way finished with Psy 361 and while he is difficult to understand at times, he doesn't expect too much. Tests are true to his material and study guides.

OK.. his english can be hard to understand.. but I do not think he is a horrible prof. I mean he gives a study guide, which comes right from his notes.. he gave us quite a few assignments, and quizes.. which he somtimes posted the answers to on blackboard, and they help ur grade.. he never took attendance.. I really didn't think he was that bad..

He is not very good at explaining things (due in part to the fact that english is his second language) but you can ace his class if you read the book, and do the study giudes along side his lecture notes. He posts it all online and he doesnt take attendance so you can get away with skipping.

Do not take perception at GVSU. I know that psy students have to pick cognition or perception and I believe that Prof Lou is the only one that teaches it. Extremely boring and quiet and cannot understand him. IF you have questions, you can email him but he never gets back to you. I had to write a grevance against him. Don't do it!!

I don't think he is really that difficult to understand, which seems to be a problem for some people. His class is super easy; he gives you review sheets that tell you exactly what is on he next exam, and he bases his exams more off the online slides rather than the textbook, so I never did the reading and still got an A. The homework is a joke.

Huge language barrier. You really have to pay attention to understand what he is saying. It gets easier as the semester goes forward. One homework assignment per test unit- generally easy. Gives study guide for tests- test content is directly off study guide. Basically, put in the effort and it's an easy A.

AWFUL!!!! He's the only prof for perception - if you dont need it, for the love of god dont take it!! I'm an A/B student, got a D+ and worked my butt off for it!!! RIDICULOUS. STEER CLEAR of this professor. He speaks with a very strong accent and is soft spoken on top of that. I didn't understand what I learned after I left the class. His exams are unfair and the questions have multiple meanings. He does not respond to e-mail at all. I put many hours into studying each week and got a D+! AVOID TAKING HIM!

Stay away from this professor. He mumbles and rambles. He puts the powerpoints online so its pointless to go to class. He was not helpful at all. When he talked about the notes he would ramble on about things that were not relevant at all to what we were trying to learn. you cant understand what he is saying and many students lost interest easily.

This professor is not bad, but his lectures are very boring and uninteresting. Many of his topics are fun to discuss, but he does virtually no discussion, and that takes away from this class. I would not recommend unless you were required to.

Sometimes it seemed he was reading his power points for the first time. I thought this class would be interesting but he turned my view point around. He mumbles and sometimes is unable to answer questions asked during class. If you can, get another teacher for this class

Mumbles. Of no help. No discussion. Voice is really soft so even if he speaks clearly, he will put you to sleep. Notes during class are useless because he skips through slides and at one point only lectured on 2 slides in 50 mins because he likes to go off on a tangent.

He is not the best professor however, you can easily get a good grade in his class. The test study guide EXACTLY outlined the exams. So if you have a good memory and do the study guide you can do very well on the exams which is basically your whole grade. He is very hard understand and going to class is pointless. Hardest class I've had at GV! His quiet, monotone voice make you want to fall asleep and is not worth going to class to hear. He rambles the whole time and power points were not helpful whatsoever! I do suggest that if you do take the class, pay attention to the videos he shows!!! He is not helpful and doesn't email you back ever!

In addition, he's very unfair to students that miss even a day of his lectures. He also tends to go off on random tangents and sometimes even forgets what he was talking about. I think the foundation of his problems as a professor stem from him knowing English as a second language. He has a thick accent and can't pronounce most words correctly. His slides are inconsistent and he cares so little about teaching that he sometimes teaches the same four slides two days in a row or skips several slides. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM.

Tests are exact from the lecture notes which he posts online. So basically going to class is pointless and you won't want too because he cannot speak English. He is very confusing and contradicts himself. He is the smartest man ever but just doesn't know how to say it in English. If you study well then you can get an A no problem.

This teacher was extremely hard to understand, and taught in an incoherent manner. You never knew what was going to be on the tests. Assignment guidelines and expectations were horrendously unclear, and upon bringing this to his attention, there was no action of remedy.

The only reason to go to lecture is the occasional in-class assignment. He rambles and talks in circles, making him very hard to understand. Not that it matters because almost nothing he lectures on is tested. This year he switched the textbook to a more technical, ophthalmologist, textbook making it harder to understand that as well.

It is clear that english isn't the first language of Professor Lou, but with a PHD in Psychology and a teacher at GVSU, you would think that he would be more understandable. Professor Lou talks in circles for the entire class and in my opinion, just confuses students that ask questions. His lectures are anything but interesting or understandable.

Leon Lou is an interesting professor, his teaching technique is different and he often will debate you for the sake of debate, it's all very Socratic. If you're not used to that style it can be off putting but it's effective As far as his English, if you don't disregard him just because he has a thick accent he's actually quite easy to understand.

Professor Lou is a good professor. He is very knowledgeable and he can have a sense of humor. He does have an accent, but over the semester you will grow accustomed to it. He is a fair grader, and as long as you put effort into his assignments, you should do fine. I will say that if you're used to getting spoon-fed information, don't take him.

I could never really understand what he was saying. He has a slight accent, but even when I understood what he was saying I just couldn't completely comprehend the material. The content was not what I thought. I would suggest taking a different class if you can. It wasn't very interesting and I did not like the teaching methods he used.

he presents material in a novel way. for me it's very refreshing to take a class that isn't cookie cutter/copy paste - obviously, though, it's not for everyone. Honestly it's so rude that people are judging him based on his accent. The dude went to two of the top universities in China so he could teach you a lot if you give him a genuine chance.

I don't understand why Professor Lou is graded so badly. He is extremely intelligent in the topic of Perception and gives a lot of examples in lectures to help you understand the material. His english isn't great, but is still understandable. Gives great exam reviews, doesn't try to surprise you, and puts notes online. What more could you want?

Professor Lou is extremely knowledgeable in the area of perception. I had a large struggle in this class due to not being able to fully understand his lectures and what he was saying. He was presenting the material, but too fast and only his way. I didn't like how he always was kind of rude when asked a question or to low down for notes.

Not knowing how he teaches and tests made it a serious struggle for exam 1, but he knew our class was not doing well b/c of our test average of a 70 after curving. the homework/in-class assignments helped a lot to get points up. his reviews are helpful, the book is useful but stopped using it halfway through b/c he tests from the notes

Dr. Lou is extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches. However, I would not take him again. Teaching style was very sporadic. Tests were hard. The weekly assignments really helped my grade though and they weren't too hard. But if you can find a way out of taking this class, do it. It was very boring and not at all what I expected.

I took him for my capstone and was worried after reading these reviews but honestly, I love the class. It's a great group of students and he really enjoys when we get into discussion and encourages it. He's extremely intelligent in the field and may challenge you a bit (argue) but it's harmless. I would take my capstone with him again. He's funny!

I took Prof. Lou for my capstone, and I absolutely loved this course! The class was very discussion based, and as long as you come to class and participate, you should do just fine. I had so much fun in the course, and I truly learned a lot. I don't understand why Lou's reviews are so bad, I loved him! I highly recommend Lou for your PSY capstone.

Doesnt speak the greatest English. Very boring 3 hour class due to how slow he teaches. He goes over everything that will be on the test so take good notes youll have plenty of time for that. Other then your own notes from lecture and book, youre on your own and have nothing else to help you. Have fun.

Lectures were slow, roundabout, completely nonsensical, boring af. Attend them anyway, because that's what he mainly tests from. Study the lecture slides for tests. He tests for understanding

Honestly, I think the Rate My Professor score here is a little low. Yes, there is a lot of reading and writing, especially in a capstone class, but Professor Lou has been one of my favorite instructors at GVSU. He is very intelligent and extremely knowledgeable in the course content, and class discussions tend to be very interesting. Great Class!

Easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. Never responds to emails, never gave any useful feedback, takes forever to grade assignments, boring and unengaging discussions and lectures. Had him for both PSY361 and PSY492 and both classes complained about him all the time. Do yourself a favor and avoid taking any class that he teaches.

The broad information we learned was intelligent and amazing. Definitely one of the best classes Ive ever took in terms of how much new information I learned. Work load was intense, 12 articles plus summaries, discussion questions plus a book and book report plus peer responses to all three were required for each module and there were six modules

I had Dr. Lou fully online and asynchronous and he never gave feedback or even reached out to his students. Online was incredibly easy with 1 assignment due each week, but every time I emailed him he never once responded. Doesn't seem to care much about his students and is not involved with them in anyway whatsoever.

He waited till last minute to grade everything. did not answer email. all 3 tests we had were messed up and he did not fix it until day before grades were due. He was very difficult. For an online class, ridiculous and i cannot believe somehow that was the class i was most worried for. If there was a 0 option i would choose it.
