Very interesting, nice guy.
Very cute, quiet, quirky little man. Straight-forward with what he expects, fair grader. Not exactly dynamic in lecture but he seriously grows on you..I even have started laughing at his little lame jokes.
so cute, very mellow, i LOVE him!
FABULOUS, my absolute favorite professor. He is very inspiring and forces you to think. Class is always entertaining and I leave knowing I learned something everytime.
Great human and professor and hot hunk of a man in this weird dort of way.
HE IS HOT!!!!!!!
As a graduating senior, he is the BEST professor I've had at Vanderbilt. I feel I learned so much from him and have gained a new appreciation for art and architecture. Whether an Art History major or not, I highly recommend taking one of his courses.
TAKE ALL HIS CLASSES! He is an incredibly inspiring and sweet individual. Has utmost trust in all his students and very understanding. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL
Quite possibly my favorite person in the world
He's the most helpful professor at Vanderbilt. Really cares for his students and is super sweet. Take his classes, very enjoyable!!! You'll have a new perspective about the buildings around you when you're done!!
He is one of the best professors I have ever had, soo knowledgeable about the subject matter, so enthusiastic and helpful. His assignments are wonderful, they make you think more about art and about yourself. TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!! You won't regret it.
Leonard Folgarait is the best professor in A&S at Vanderbilt. His assignments and exams are very thoughtful and very thoughtfully evaluated. He's engaging (if a little soft-spoken), but he challenges everything you know about the world and forces you to live/experience life actively.
Folgarait is great! Unlike most art history professors, he doesn't require unnecessary memorization of dates or artists for his tests. He seems genuinely interested in your actual knowledge of the material, rather than useless facts. I highly recommend him, he is a sweet man and great professor.
As an egineering student looking for humanities courses, I was a little afraid of walking into an upper-level A&S course for my first A&S class. Dr. Folgarait was tremendously helpful in helping me adapt, and his class was thoroughly interesting as well. I couldn't have asked for a better professor.
Made the 2 hr summer class go by quick, a helpful prof who makes class interesting. As far as difficulty goes, I think it's pretty easy to regurgitate what he says in lecture for the essay tests, so i definitely recommend this course or any course he teaches. 111 with him is an easy A
He is fantastic!!! I LOVE him and think he's the best A&S teacher to ever step foot onto Vanderbilt's campus. And plus his humor is fabulous!
I love Dr. Folgarait. He was my thesis director, and he and his wife are great friends of mine.
I LOVE LEONARD!!! without a doubt the best art history professor on campus, and maybe the best at Vandy! he makes the class fly by and you'll learn so much from him! TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE! ps-go talk to him if anything's wrong...he'll fix it!
One of the best people I have ever met in my entire life. I am constantly enthralled by his lectures, and wish class would last all day long with him!!
I LOVE LEONARD FOLGARAIT! He is THE best teacher at Vanderbilt! He is so helpful and kind to everyone. Take at least one class with him before you graduate!
He is the best professor at Vanderbilt. I absolutely recommend any of his classes. His lectures are really interesting and clear, and he is extremely helpful and friendly with students.
he is a really intelligent man who teaches more than art history, he also is extremely kind and funny which makes him different from vandy's many pompous profs. his lectures are interesting but he is extremely soft spoken and sometimes it is easy to fall asleep. p.s. beware of your cell phone ringing in class
He's really smart, and really nice. He just wants everyone to do well in his class. If you go, don't do the crossword while he's looking, and put a little effort into the tests, it's definitely an easy class. He's pretty soft-spoken, though, so it's sometimes hard to hear what he says.
The most helpful, intelligent professor at Vanderbilt. Hands down. TAKE ANY of his classes and be amazed at the multitudes you will learn. A wonderful himan.
Clear lecturing style but sometimes doesn't get to some of the material
AWESOME! Probably the best professor I had at Vanderbilt (back in 1995). His lectures were so good that I was disappointed when the class ended. Even if you don't care about are, you'll love it when the class is over. I can't say enough good about him.
I LOVE THIS CLASS!!! He is a great teacher and the class is so interesting. Such a sweet man!
Sometimes I go sit in on his lectures, even though I'm not in any of his classes anymore. I can't say enough nice things about him ... he is what I think college should be about: being passionate about learning.
He and Michael Rose (music) were the 2 best professors I had at Vandy (back in the mid-1990s). I learned more in FA111 than any other class there. He is hilarious with a dry humor, yet inserts a serious amount of knowledge into each lecture. If I still lived in Nashville, I would sit in on his classes just for fun--they were that good!
This class is great! Folgarait makes the lectures interesting and he is a fair grader. Only a midterm, final, and one paper. You know what he expects and he is willing to help his students. Definitely my favorite professor i have had a vandy! Take one of his classes
Please take this class! It is phenomenal! Folgarait is probably the nicest man you'll ever meet, and the way he views the world and art is inspiring. Your grade is based on one 12 page paper that you work on all semester, and he gives you feedback before you turn it in. Classes are a dynamic lecture/discussion format. What college should be!
Love him! Always looked forward to class. He's a dynamic lecturer with a contagious passion for the subject. Not a difficult class, but challenges you to think deeply. He infuses his discussion with a soft-spoken, dry sense of humor. Also extremely helpful outside of class - so kind and sincerely interested in his students. Take one of his classes!
Professor Folgarait is incredible!! His lectures gave me goosebumps because they were so fascinating. You must attend regularly in order to do well, because the mid-term and final are timed essays based on the lectures. but by the end of the first lecture you won't -want- to miss class...EVER!
Prof. Folgarait has been my favorite teacher out of all my classes in high school and college. He makes art history extremely interesting and truly worth studying. There is no attendance but you go anyway because the lecture is so interesting. I highly recommend anything he teaches. Midterm, paper, final. All reasonable if you go to class.
best professor at vanderbilt hands down. absolutely amazing - his lectures are brilliant. if you get a chance, take him.
The ABSOLUTE BEST teacher I have ever had. He is insightful, encouraging and so intelligent!! Plan your semester AROUND his class- it doesn't matter if you are a major/minor, you NEED to take his class!
Professor Folgarait is the best professor I've had at Vanderbilt. This class was amazing. Don't buy the book- go to class and pay attention to what he says and you'll do fine. Trust me- you'll want to go to class- he's that great of a lecturer.
Even if Art History isn't your cup of tea, take his class. I'm in another one of his classes now- I can't say enough amazing things about him. Don't buy the book. If you go to class and take good notes you can easily do well. His classes are either: midterm, paper, final or just midterm and a final. With minimal effort it's an easy A-/B+
GREAT professor. He's a great lecturer and throws int he occasional semi-funny art history joke. Don't buy the text- it's 100% unnecessary. Go to class, take notes, and you'll get an A. He puts only a few slides online that you'll need to know for the test. There's just a very straightforward midterm and a final.
Dr. Folgarait conducted a very interesting and entertaining class. Most of our time was spent experiencing and discussing various works of political art. He is very good at leading discussion and encouraging each participant. His class put less emphasis on learning facts and more on learning how to look at art.
This man will change your life. You will look at the world differently. His lectures are brilliant, eloquent, and he carefully plants seeds of art historical curiosity in your brain. Magic. Not only is he highly intelligent, but also caring and passionate about his students. You're a fool if you don't take AT LEAST one of his classes. HURRY! NOW!
One of my favorite professors and one of my favorite classes. I'm considering majoring in art history thanks to Dr. Folgarait. Incredibly knowledgeable and super helpful. He wants everyone to succeed and he's willing to work to make you do well. I hope I have another chance to take a class with him
Professor Folgarait is the best teacher at Vanderbilt. Whether you like Art history or not, you will love this class. He challenges you to think and perceive the world in a way that you wouldn't usually see it. The book is 100% unnecessary. There are 2 tests so just study hard but no work besides studying. So go to class and enjoy the best teacher!
Definitely look forward to this class each week. Mind blowing discussion that pushes the limit of what art really is. Grade based on 2 5-page subjective papers and 1 12-page research paper, opportunities for regrade. Very helpful and insightful on all topics. Class is solely discussion and analysis of different art forms. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Great professor. The class is easy, but you will learn quite a bit. It's less about learning the subject than it is about learning how to be a student and about developing critical thinking.
Amazing professor. His lectures are interesting and always have a twist ending where everything starts to make sense. Grades based on what he thinks you deserve, which is usually very high.
Prof. Folgarait is THE BEST. There's so little work in this course, and he allows rewrites on everything. Absolutely amazing :)
Inspired an interest in art in me (im econ) and gave me a knowledge base I put to use when I go to art museums. Easy class, go to most of his lectures (youll enjoy them) so you know what to write on the essay tests. Only a midterm and final; no work in the class except studying several hours for them the night before. Definitely reccomend taking
I took Leonard's classes in the 80's. Now, I'm a landscape designer. The 20th c. Euro class I took spring of 1982 as a Freshman (had to get permission) is the rock I push off of daily in my work. It's not about landscaping people; it's about Kandinsky. Leonard's class has stayed with me f o r e v e r.
This class is awesome and Leonard is a gifted teacher. I'm an Econ major, but I leave this class with an inspired interest in art. You don't have to go (but you should because his lectures are amazing). Two tests: mid-term (40%) and final (60%). You only need to study the night before, and he grades easy. This is a must-take for anyone.
Best professor at Vanderbilt. Life changing class, even though it was my fifth time learning about many of the -isms. He's remarkably methodical in his lecturing and doesn't proceed until everything is crystal clear. He's stimulating, mind-blowingly knowledgable, and makes you WANT to be class. Two tests, easy grader, best class I've ever taken.
Leonard is the best teacher I've had at Vanderbilt. The material is interesting anyways but he nevertheless does an unbelievable job of bringing together the artistic styles with the history and psychological components, which are key to understanding the art. Leonard is just an awesome dude and one of the kindest you'll ever meet. Take the class.
LOVE FOLGARAIT!!! I'm not a big HART person but Folgarait made class interesting and fun. His lectures could not be more clear and only two essay tests (midterm + final). Fairly easy grader and as long as you study his lecture notes an A is pretty easy. If you need to take HART for axle, take him!!!! almost no rote memorization also like other hart
Very, very nice and intelligent man. Lectures are interesting, however, he offers theoriesinterpretations that I have never seen before, historical background on paintings is sometimes confusing due to errorsomissions (especially on Guernica), and spends way too much time on minor artistsworks (includes Jetelová but no de Chirico or Ernst).
Leonard Folgarait changed my life. Literally. 17 years ago, he saved me from the hell of Pre-med and organic chemistry with his enlightening lectures, clarity of ideas, and non-judgmental nature. He is a gentle man who lets his thoughts and ideas make the impact. Thanks, Leonard. Because of you, I have pursued a career in ideas.
Folgarait cares so much about your success and makes you feel special. You can revise your papers an unlimited number of times until you get the grade you want, and he always pushes you to go for the A. Makes the material relevant and interesting, makes art history easy for newbies, and encourages thinking outside the box.
AMAZING LECTURER. He is so soft spoken and kind, he cares so much about his students. I don't like modern art but I LOVED this class. No homework as long as you go to class (you will want to, its so enjoyable and relaxing), only a midterm and final, no attendance taken. One of the best teachers at Vandy, every student should take a class with him!
Folgarait is hands down the kindest, most knowledgeable, most intriguing professor I've had at Vandy. He wants each student to do well and puts all of his effort into lecturing. I went to office hours just to chat because he knows so much and loves to talk about it. Take his class!!! I've steered a lot of people to his classes and they loved it!
Amazing lecture. Always respect students. Also is very serious about plagiarism. he said that the work he checked by plagramme plagiarism checker.
Nicest man, AMAZING professor. Guaranteed A if you put in the work and have good notes. Only 2 tests, no participation. Must take a class with him at Vanderbilt.
Best professor I've had at Vanderbilt. If you have any opportunity to take him, you must! He is such a wonderful man, who is very invested in his students' success and well-being, and his lectures are fascinating.
THE BEST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD IN VANDERBILT. He is so nice, cares for each student and respect everyone's opinion. The material is interesting and mind blowing. Very soft-spoken. Lectures are always amazing and I'm kinda sad that it is over. It was the best summer class I've ever taken. TAKE HIS CLASS, you won't regret it.
Professor Folgarait is adorable in class and a great lecturer. He's very clear and willing to entertain any and all comments. He's also willing to joke around a bit, which is awesome. His workload is very reasonable and manageable.
Great professor with interesting lectures. Two tests, no homework whatsoever. Just need to study some before each midterm to know some specifics for the essays.
Folgarait is an awesome and well respected professor. He is extremely thoughtful and passionate about the art he teaches, which conveys itself through lectures. I didn't have to read the book once - his lectures are superb. Would highly recommend this class or any others that he teaches.
Professor Folgarait is amazing! He is kind and caring and knows everyone by name. He gives fascinating lectures and is very easy to understand. Instead of requiring you to memorise dates and facts he cares more that we understand the concepts and movements in art. I wish I could take a class with him every semester!
As a STEM major, I was weary of taking a liberal arts class, but Professor Folgarait makes the content accessible and interesting to every student. Study for the midterm and final (the only two grades for the class) and you will succeed. Everyone should try to take his class. If you don't like art history now, believe me, you will after his class.
Words do not do this man justice. Folgarait is simply the BEST! His passion for architecture is awe-inspiring. He is an extremely compassionate prof who loves it when you speak in class. Not to mention he's a generous grader. 2 short exams, that's it. If you attend lecture, you'll get an A. Go for the grade, stay for the best prof on campus!
The BEST professor I've ever known.
Despite his soft, soporific voice, Folgarait's enthusiasm for the subject keeps you alert and interested. The material you learn in lecture is unique, and this is one of those classes where you learn random facts and stories that you can tell to impress colleagues. Not a lot of d2d work, but I did prepare extensively for the exams.
Professor Folgarait is amazing. He genuinely cares about each of his students and he does everything he can to make sure you get the best grade possible. His lectures are interesting, but be prepared to talk a lot.
Hands down one of the best professors at Vandy. Must take even if you have no art experience, like me. It's only a midterm and final, with no other work at all. He doesn't take attendance, but it's extremely important to attend class, since there's no other way to get good notes to prepare for the tests. Super nice guy who wants you to succeed.
He is an incredible person that cares about the health of his students. If students came in sick, he would excuse them from class to rest and feel better. He has interesting lectures and connects it to modern events. Success is based on a research project at the end of the semester and easy to do well. Easy humanities class for STEM majors.
Amazing professor! Cares so much about the students' well-being and academic performance. This writing seminar taught me a lot and changed my perspective on modern art completely. Take this writing seminar if you have the chance!!!!
Folgarait is one of my favorite professors at Vanderbilt. He cares about his students and engages everyone in learning. His teaching and grading methods enable students to learn a lot without feeling the pressure of getting a bad grade. If you pay attention in class, do the reading, and review a reasonable amount of time it's an easy A.
He is the BEST Art History professor I've had so far. He really knows what he's talking about and makes every class engaging! He also cares so much about his students and really wants you to do well. He taught my writing seminar and we only had one graded paper but it was super easy and you could choose your topic. Take any class he teaches!!!!
Spots in his class aren't gone within the first day of registration for no reason. Best professor I've ever had at Vandy. A mentor, an intellectual, an inspiring intellectual who really teaches you to think and push your limits. I literally thought about graduating one semester late just to take a few more of his classes.
This man is one of the most intelligent, caring, and thoughful professors you will ever meet. All of the previous reviews are accurate; you should definitely take him for any class he offers. He's incredibly accomplished but humble at the same time, and this translates into the way he interacts with students. He grades easily and is very flexible.
Phenomenal professor. As a non-Art History major, I was very appreciative for his clear lectures and passion for the topics. He is one of the kindest professors on campus. Only 2 exams - but both are very fair and he gives great feedback. Took this course for AXLE, and I loved it so much I hope to take him again. 10/10 recommend
Professor Folgarait is the best. Extremely caring of his students, very knowledgeable about the material and good at stimulating discussion. Workload is very manageable and he provides great feedback. Take him if you can.
Super nice and friendly you only get one paper to write and you can rewrite it as many times as you want! Easy A.
Kindest man I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with. Showed a genuine interest in both the student's learning and well being. Sent unprompted encouraging emails. Graded our essays insanely quickly. if you take good notes in lecture and do the reading and you will get a good grade in this class.
This man is truly deserving of all of the praise he gets on here. Dr. Folgarait is a great professor and one of the most genuine, caring, intelligent, and inspiring people I have ever met. I took this course for an HCA credit and loved every minute of it. Definitely try to take a class with him before you leave Vanderbilt -- you won't regret it!
Professor Folgarait is such an amazing professor. It is clear that he is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. I have been struggling a lot mentally this semester because of Covid and he was the only professor who actively worked to make accommodations for me and genuinely cared about how I was doing. I highly recommend him.
Professor Folgarait is one of the most caring and kindest professors I've had at Vanderbilt. He is extremely knowledgable about his area and his lectures are very engaging. I enjoyed all aspects of this class and am now very strongly attracted to the art history major. Definitely would recommend!!
Professor Folgarait is literally the nicest human being I've ever met. Sometimes I wish I waited to take his class in person just to interact with him more. HART 2710 is graded on 2 non cumulative tests that are two open ended essay questions. Spend a little time before each test preparing and take good notes every class, and you will do great.
Folgarait is the GOAT. You cannot hate him. He is the best professor in Vanderbilt period and he will make your day brighter. All the professors at Vandy needs to learn how this man treats his students and learn from him. He makes HART easy and interesting. More importantly, he makes you feel good about yourself and respected. TAKE HIM!!!!
He is literally the nicest professor ever. Grandfather vibes- he genuinely cares about students. It consists of three papers, but only the last one is graded. The final paper is presented in class, but it is read straight from paper. He gives you an imaginary grade and you can edit until you get an A. He expects every student to end with an A.
Prof. Folgarait is the kindest person in the world and his class was genuinely a joy to go to. He is incredibly understanding if you have to miss class but makes the subject matter very interesting. The grade is also basically one final paper that he allows you to rewrite until you've reached an A.
Without a doubt the best professor I have had at Vanderbilt. Caring, understanding, will work with you no matter what. He is incredibly intelligent but explains the material so that anyone, even an art history beginner, can understand it. Soft-spoken, witty, engaging lectures without being too complex. Many reasons his classes are hard to get into.
Professor Folgarait is the kindest man alive. No hyperbole. Whatever you expect, expect more. He is gracious and caring. He is never frugal with his compliments and his entire teaching philosophy is to encourage willing participation, learning, and excitement. He more than succeeds. It is a privilege to have been able to take his class.
Just an amazing person. This was his last semester teaching, but I'm leaving this comment because I am very thankful that I had a chance to take his class. Recommend him if he ever teaches again.
It is so rare to find kind, loving human beings like Prof. Folgarait. Throughout the semester, he has taught with utmost excitement and treated everyone with endless respect. His lectures were so engaging and in-depth that I lost track of time in every class. He set the bar high for what professors should be like. Such an invaluable experience!
