sometimes a bit unsure...
The only reason I passed chemistry

hard to believe a guy with a PhD in chemistry named Leonard is so studly.
I don't like this course.
Hope you can write fast, it's hard to keep up
His hotness makes chem enjoyable!
Awful notes, unorganized, all over the place!!
Hard Course, Too fast. Nice guy though.
you will need to buy a new pack of pens for this class
Great lecturer with a great body; course itself is hard though
Notes seem scattered, not wonderful, but definitely better than the alternatives
No Comments
Very scattered notes and many mistakes, kinda sloppy. Very built, I might add...
goes really fast in lectures, but yet clear
Very unclear professor whose notes make absolutely no sense.
Nice guy, but kind of scatterbrained. Teaching is disorganized.
too fast; helpful, approachable; needs some improvement on teaching style

Cut to the chest of content.Does example.Reminds me of Joey on Friends TV show.
tough course, but he tries; his legs are too small for his body

Course extremely difficult, but thanx to him, I PASSED!
i failed. thank you prof lermer
not bad, but he makes everything seems so easy in class, the opposite in fact.
would probably make a better bodybuilder than prof
an already difficult course is made impossible thanks to this guy
very good prof
ohhh MAN this dude goes fast. I barely have the time to absorb the stuff cuz im so busy writing everything down. MAN!
I'm failing, but it's not because of him. Lermer's as good as a prof can be for this absolutely insane course. He does have to go at quite a fast pace though (probably because it's the summer session and everything's very condensed).
His teaching style is alright, and the tests aren't extremely difficult either. But, he's not very helpful when you ask him questions through email.
His notes are understandable but sometimes a bit messy though. He is always there to answer your questions after class & during his office hours. Make sure u do his assigned text questions ;there is always a few questions right off from there in the exam
He's good at explaining and helpful, better than other prof teaching 233, the course is just hard
completely irresponsible, loses student midterm and refuse to admit that he's wrong. NEVER answers e-mails and then claims that he never received any. worst human being ever encountered.
He shouldn't be teaching.
A BS course taught by a BS prof. Yes, Lermer knows organic chem - the problem is he can't teach it worth a damn. He NEVER replies to e-mails, and he refuses to understand that we are not 15-year veterans of organic chem......More useless than a used condo
Okay Prof... not exceptional and not the worst
He knows his subject well but is not very predictable when gives test. He can just ask u to draw a graph (given on a remote side-note of a chapter..He is hot!!...his t-shirt tucked only on one side of his pants looks weird but he has a great body.
To put it simply, CHEM 233 is hell in an eerily disturbing tangible, yet incomprehensible form.
failing =*(...

HARD MIDTERMS!!! sadly, only 15 ppl passed the last one...
He said he'd put up example questions for the midterm, summary of things to know, and answers to practice final--didn't do any of those
He is a Hottie. he is the best organic Chem Prof I ever had
Promised to post answers for practice midterms, finals. Did neither. Gave us an irrevelant practice Final exam from like ten years ago with most stuff not even covered!! a good prof if ur looking for someone to learn weight training from.
He's not a bad prof,he just goes way too fast in class, not to mention I got nothing out of it. There's just too much material to be covered in this course. He's helpful, however, if you study first then ask him questions. He's clearer in that regard.
Lermer certainly knew the material he was teaching, but had alot of difficulty in teaching students how to understand it. Also, the best way to study for his exams would be to focus on whatever he puts in the LEAST emphasis on in class!!!
His notes were very unorganized. Didn't show up half of the time to scheduled office hours. NEVER answers e-mails. In general, this is the course from hell. However, probably the best prof out of the others teaching.
Nice guy but not the greatest teacher. Studied and knew all the course notes he gave but did not do too hot on final (apparently learning lecture material does not cut it for his class).UBC is definitely lacking in providing a good intro org chem course
Doesn't normally teach this course, but its pretty simple stuff. Needed to brush up on the basics a bit before scribbling and re-scribbing all over his overhead notes...
Completely disorganized, looks for overheads for at least 10 minutes a class. The exact same notes that he is using are pulled from the 311 text.
very unorganized and unprepared for class!
He is the best organig prof around. His notes were organized, but he went over them too fast.
His notes were helpful, but the speed was too fast...the midterm was fair, but we were shocked on the final exam(4 times as hard as midterm)...
Not very nice. Too fast and too boring. Confusing mechanisms. Terrible and hard class.
very disorganized and confused. knows the material but has no idea how to teach it. you have to learn everything on your own
I made 3 office-hour appointments with this guy to clarify his horribly organized lectures. He didn't show up to either of them! If he ever tells you he's giving you a "fifteen minute quiz" be prepared for a 75-minute one! THis guy just CANNOT t
I found his notes useful
He is disorganized for class and jumps all over the place. Tests are far harder than the material in class (expect them to be long). Made an appointment to see him in his office and he was 30-min late and told me I should come back another time!
Midterm eas pretty decent, but then he jumps everywhere when he teaches and isn't that clear on the details. He assumes u kno what he's talking about.
lessons not planned out, not very clear when explaining things
His class is so boring I usually fall asleep. Then comes the Final exam and he tests on stuff he doesn't talk much about. He is the worst prof I've ever had. He never prepares for class, and his notes are not organized.
He likes to fail people. He shows no mercy & loves to screw you over. He's well known for that. He thinks he can teach but he doesn't know he can't. He wouldn't know how to teach if his life depended on it.
Terrible Terrible Terrible. If you are planning on taking this class as an elective stay away!! Disorganised notes, hard tests on stuff not explained. Waste of tuition money learned nothing, no text to supplement poor teaching either :(

boring! disorganized - worst notes ever. promised to post midterm answers but never did. surprise surprise a similar question pops up on the final exam.
Doesn't seem prepared for the lectures. Answers to the questions are somewhat vague. Doesn't give enough examples and applications of the material.
He's a very patient professor, willing to stay after class everyday to answer everybody's questions. He knows how to make things clear for his students. Has some humor too.
honestly speaking.. HE'S NOT A BAD PROF.. i think he's the best prof there is who's teaching chem 233... but the course itself is hard... so many people fail...it's not his fauly that UBC has such a hard course..
The midterms felt iffy, but stil well designed - he wanted to see how much of the material we had really grasped. The final was fair, and I think his clarity and knowledge of the subject made it possible for me to get a decent grade in the course.
Disorganized, useless lectures. Test questions were extremely difficult. I've taken three classes with Lermer and I don't understand why he hasn't been fired. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AS AN ELECTIVE.
He is not a good teacher, but can be forgiven because his midterm is VERY easy. Although the class is boring and aren't very helpful, the easy midterm is worth taking the first Half with prof. Lermer.
He is absolutely useless! People, please stay away from him! His lecture is so useless and it makes you more confused! The worst thing is he doesn't even know the material well and he has never gone through a lecture without making a mistake!
This guy gets 1/5 for everything. His exams were brutal (class avg <60%), he forgot about every office-hour I booked with him, and he seems incapable of explaining anything so it makes sense. God-awful instructor!!!!
The university should FORCE him to take some education courses. We are not white mice for his teaching EXPERIMENT!!!
very confusing lectures and notes
Won't ever remember you, won't ever reply to your emails, disorganized and inconsistent notes, gave no indication towards expectations, bad bad bad
Worst prof ever hope he isn't teaching for long! makes what used to be an easy course hard! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
The final was nothing like any of the sparse study resourses we had (1 old MT and a spectra book). I only did well b/c I studied my notes until i went mad, and even that didnt prepare me enough for the final. v.disorganized in class & didnt reply to email
He's a cool guy, so nice and he helps his student. it's not his fault that the nature of the course is difficult. It was a tough course, but read up before, and course would be really easy, and you can understand his lectures!
Bad proff, switch into another section if possible. Fails many students.
Please Fire Him!
the worst prof i ever had
Compared to other profs like Macfarlane..., Lermer's sooooo much better. He's organized, and knows his stuff! He only causes some confusion sometimes because he writes stuff wrong. He's friendly and helps! He also tells you exactly what's on the midterm (which he writes)! HE'S SO HOT!!!!! *drools*
Worst prof ever! Doesn't respond to e-mails. Very unorganized, unfocused lectures that don't make any sense. The notes are hard to comprehend and he always makes mistakes when doing examples. The nature of the course IS difficult but could be made much easier with better teaching. Switch if you can!
he makes a fine effort teaching.
He rambles instead of teaching. And during class when you copy down what he writes, you'll read it afterwards and be like, "I couldn't have been **** at 10 in the morning, could I?" They make NO SENSE. even if they're right. switch if you can. seems like a nice guy. but not a good prof.
He's a nice guy, but he makes way too many mistakes. His notes are disorganized, his writing extremely messy, and you can't tell when he's starting a new section. The textbook has become my new best friend.
Not even worth commenting.......
Very disorganized, writes too quickly, mumbles out incomprehensive explanations and assumes everyone is understanding.
makes a few mistakes in lecture notes, lots of misspelt words. will post the notes online only if you remind him. do the problem sets and understand them well to prepare you for finals. sig figs dun matter to him (for the midterm)
Lermer is a great teacher; not very strict and very concerned
good guy~
he was a good and fair teacher. Just listen in class. His notes are useless but his explanations in the lectures are very good. Do the problem sets and understand them and you should be fine.
A little scatterbrained at times, but very nice and eager to help. Understanding. Nice guy.
Overall good guy who knows the subject very well. He is helpful and will answer questions in class, but do not count on him out of class time. As stated, he knows the subject (esp organic chemistry) very well, but is not exactly the best at leading an organized lecture.
Nice guy, with messy notes. Makes at least one mistake every class. Uses models to demonstrate aspects of org chem well.
Had this class last year. He's very disorganized... Notes suck! Can't understand them. Exams are unfair and hard (sometimes covering stuff we didn't talk about in class). A lot of times CANNOT ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS (if we ask a question, he stares at his paper for 10 minutes, while we start chatting and playing cards, and finally he says he cant ans
better than the rest of the profs teaching this course.
when i first got into his class i doubted his teaching abilities =P since my friends said he was hard to understand~ but i must say he's pretty good at this org chem business~haha exams are fair and he is the biggest midterm question hinter i've had in ubc! haha which is awesome~ and i agree, he's the best prof for CHEM 233 most definitely!!!
Knows his stuff, but I'm not sure if he should be teaching it necessarily. His notes are often messy and incoherent, but his explanations of models are VERY useful. In his class you have to pay attention!! Though his notes may seem a little scattered, copy them regardless, and go over them yourself again. They make sense eventually.
failed horribly with another prof, lermer actually made sense! I did better then i could have hoped having taken it the second time with him!
Awesome prof 4 Ch233,not as good 4 Ch123.Very helpful!Notes aren't that good!But his helpfulness is great!TIP: Don't fall behind in O Chem.highly recommended for Ch233.
He's pretty good at explaining things b/c he doesn't come in with the "I expect you to know it already" attitude. It felt like high school again in his class, except it was 10x as big ^^
Extraodinary prof with incredible ability to explain all difficult concepts in chem 121. Easy midterm but tough final. Great notes. You have to go to his lectures b/c they are very helpful. Read both text and his notes then you will be fine. I highly recommand his class.
the other class, steward's class had a higher average, my frd said she was magic...lermer is not bad tho...more like the "guy" way of teaching, messy but understandable
he is awesome! the best!

Lermer is an okay prof. His writing is very messy and he's kind of unorganized. As far as UBC chem profs go, he's on the upper end of things. Just stay awake and try to keep up (write fast and review lots) and bring white out/ eraser because he tends to make mistakes when he's drawing out molecules.
He really knows his stuff and has side stories that help you connect chemistry to the real world. His notes are quite messy and they're a bit all over the place, but if you really pay attention the notes make sense. He is also quite fair when it comes to tests and has really good summaries to help you prepare for tests.
He is one of the best profs for Chem 233. If you just pay attention in class and take your own notes, you will do fine in that class.
What proff, he is excellento,he is very goood at teaching soooo helpful, he is the one!!
Agree with previous posters...he tells you exactly what's on the midterm and final. He doesn't deviate much from previous exams either...no curveballs! ...so if you do all the previous exams and do well on them, you'll do fine. Notes are okay, office hours are helpful.
this guy is so not class should be x-rated
aside from the fact that hes CUTE...hes really helpfull especially when he sees ur doing ur best to pass ORGANIC CHem...loved his notess they basically summarized the book but u also have to read the book to completely understand everything..tip: try to solve as many problems as u can...
Great notes for OCHEM. Really summarizes and tries to be clear. Expectations are clearly outlined and tests are not a surprise. Tries his best to make subject accessible.
Kinda cool..........very strange
The greatest Prof I had when I was in school. So hot and sexy too...
He actually sits down and explains the problems with you. He is one of the best professors I have had.
Great professor, very helpful and easy to understand.
He tries very hard to help the students. He always replies emails as soon as possible. However, his notes are a little messy sometimes. The problem is the structure of the course, not him.
Great Prof.defnitely one of my fav in UBC!~ really helpful at reviewing the materials~~!!! same as Dr Sammis~ def. recommended for 2nd Chem!!!!+)
One of the most helpful profs i've met in UBC. Extremely clear and goes over every single detail possible when he's teaching in class. you juss gotta listen. If you ask him concepts/questions one on one (in his office hours), its impossible to forget it. Awesome teacher.
Orgo chem isn't easy for most people, thats just the typical to prepare for. However, I have never met a prof who dedicated more time to his students. He spent hours working with us after class trying to ensure that we understood. If you miss something in class, See him, he is an amazing caring prof - ubc is lucky to have him.
This guy proves that just because you have a PhD doesnt mean you can teach. I know chem majors that could teach first year better than him. Lecture slides are gibberish and he flips around all over the place. I feel scattered just from being in the same room as him. He starts to grow on you by the end but dont let that deceive you.
I don't understand why his rating here is so low. Lermer is a great prof to have for o-chem. He is very clear and thorough in his lectures and is very willing to help after class and in his office hours. He definitely knows his chem and is also a very kind person. Provides LOTS of practice questions and exams too.
The best prof I have ever had
You have to take ochem with lermer, he makes it seem like its abc!
One of the best profs i've had so far. ranks right up there with iqbal.
Dr. Lermer is a great prof! He made organic chem, not only easy but fun. Hes always available to help and hes really nice when you ask him questions. his exams are fair and not too bad as long as you keep up with the class and make sure you understand everything, you'll be fine. one of the best profs I had at ubc.
He seemed nice at first but he goes way too fast and gives us no time to think. He also gives the attitude that everything is so easy ("this is SCREAMING grignard reaction!"). But it was summer session after all. Needless to say, I didn't do very well.
You will get a seizure watching him flip back and forth through his slides. Has no control over his tablet pen and makes a lot of mistakes when writing on his slides. Thinks the class understands what he is talking about and so rushes through everything. I didn't get a bad mark in his class but his teaching style is just... blah.
great prof! I took this course in the summer and it was definately an intense course. Dr. Lermer's notes are really brief but he goes over the majority of the info during lectures. Make sure you read the textbook before you go to class to get the most out of it. He tries very hard to make everyone pass and do well so make sure you do your part!
If you want to pass this course, take it with Dr. Lermer. His exams are fair, and actualy quite easy. He doesn't give any tricky questions just make sure you read his notes and listen during lectures. Hes very nice and is always avaliable to help.
awesome prof, had him during the summer. he really tries hard to teach his student the concept of ochem instead of just telling the students to memorize stuff...great prof and i recommend taking him, very useful notes
Fantastic prof for summer session. Material easier than expected, prof also makes it clear what you need to know. Exams are fair, easy if you put in the time to practice reactions. Absolutely no trick questions!
Dr. Lermer!! Buff Lermer AKA Leonard "Schwarzenegger" is the best O-chem prof. Had him during the summer. He had clear expections of students, materials covered are easy if you listen during lecture, and exams are fair, all straight forward from the text and lecture slides. If you want to take 223 you must get him
Best ochem class ever. Had all the negative expectations going in, but turned out to be my favourite course. Got an A+. Do not take it with Jackie Stewart, you have to use stupid write-thru paper
Great prof, clear most of the time and goes at a fair pace. Also, first midterm is easy and a GPA booster, 2nd midterm is quite tough and the final will be long and hard with difficult synthesis questions. Make sure you take advantage of his easy first midterm because you'll the boost!
Dr. Lermer is easy to understand, key is to listen for the important points. Once he makes a point, he'll spend 10-15 minutes providing supporting data, so it's easy to get lost a bit if you don't understand why he's explaining these things. Either way, he explains everything very well, gives fair tests. Extremely helpful!!
You can tell that Leonard is very very smart when it comes to organic chemistry, but I have the feeling that he doesn't know how to teach students properly. He is not organized with his notes and it's just sooo confusing.
He is very disorganized and arrives to class (sometimes late) not very well prepared for his lecture, often searching through loose papers trying to orientate himself. He does not seem to enjoy teaching or have any training in how to teach a course (his notes were not in order from class to class so you had to rely on the textbook to learn).
Leonard is a fantastic prof. Yes, he may flip back and forth through slides but it's usually because he's so excited about a topic that he'll discuss it at great length. His exams are fair and he is more than willing to help you succeed in his class in any way that he can.
Dr. Lermer is really REALLY smart he seriously knows his chemistry and loves to talk about o chem. that said his lectures are really lacking there is few explanations and a lot of slides he skips or says "you know this" and moves on. This course needs supplemental material I highly recommend organic chem as a second language.
Leonard gives you all the information that you require in order to get a high mark in his course, it is all on you to do the necessary work outside of class. Organic Chemistry is not an easy subject and tests require more than just a quick review. Leonard is more than willing to help those that first try to help themselves. Great instructor.
Uses power points that includes practically everything you need to know, but he adds annotations to them during class (which he doesn't upload). Tests and final are pretty fair and are similar to the given sample midterms. He has a tone of voice that sounds like he's talking down to students but helpful.
Very disorganized and hard to understand. Be prepared to do out of class studying to stay caught up. Flips around notes in almost random order and at times speaks to students as if they should already know the material even if hardly covered. I would suggest taking O Chem from him
Had him for summer, he was great! Fast paced/tough courseexpected. I dont understand when ppl say he;s disorganized. As long as you have his slides, follow along and practice the questions, its very clear. Tells you what to expect on midterms & finals so no surprises for anything. Overall, I would say one of the best organic chemistry profs.
REALLY nice prof. He is one of the very few who actually simplify the concept and mechanisms and explain them thoroughly. The only "problem" is that sometimes he explains it TOO well and makes people feel that they don't need to do some practice for the midterm. Also his NOTES tend to be a bit disorganized, but not his lecture. Do NOT skip class.
Leonard is so bad. He goes through power points at full speed, doesn't explain slides, and skips about half of the material. He is unapproachable to talk to, and just expects organic chemistry to make complete sense to every student. On our last midterm, the class average was 50%. 8 out of the 9 people that I talked to had failed.
The worse ever prof met throughout the campus Leonard never uses the textbook, where he uses his own notes. However, his notes are un-organized and messy He seems to be pretty knowledgeable towards organic chem however, he seems to be failing on teaching students strongly recommend to prevent this prof
Leonard is pretty bad in terms of teaching the class but his notes are really easy to study and memorize. He doesn't teach you chem he just makes it so you memorize. His lectures are very disorganized and he's quite lackadaisical. Tests and quizzes are easy. Uses powerpoint for chem which kinda sucks for understanding; good for memorization.
Great chem prof. What I really love about him is that during lecture, he points out what topics to focus your time studying and what topics to skip. Tests are fair, if you don't study, you wont pass. For the ones who stays behind to ask questions he is very thorough and will explain things many times until he is sure you understand.
One word could sum him up: disorganized. Idk why UBCO even has this guy for the summer. He's a super nice guy, but he has no sense of structure! He goes thru his slides randomly and skips over so much. He is a perfect example of someone who is an expert in the field and understands the subject SO well, but just can't teach it
Len has minimal structure to his lecture notes & assumes as though everyone knows the material already. He's clearly knowledgeable about Organic Chem but doesn't answer his emails & when marking tests, isn't very generous with part marks. Ask questions in class, study practice exams. Definitely a hard prof. Good luck cause you'll seriously need it.
I did not like his class at all. He does provide a lot of examples but as he goes over them, he skips over key steps or expects you to already know it a bit. His tests covered too much content of the amount of time provided. The average for our final was a fail... good luck if you take him, at least he is nice.
