he is very kind and sweet...
A one-trick pony, but a thoroughbred
His lectures are not just informative, but entertaining and opinionated. Never any doubt about where he stands.
He's an excellent teacher - a very interesting lecturer, open for discussion, and generally a very nice guy. Also he doesn't assign a term paper just two 5-7 papers based on the readings and notes. I've taken another class of his and it was the same thing
he's really funny. good Reagan jokes. helpful with papers. interesting readings.
Simply the best prof at McGill.Would be a grave error to miss his class.Brilliant man.Fantastic personality. I implore you to take his class! You will be a much more well rounded student for it! Some readings, but very well chosen and interesting.
Professor Moore is an amazing guy. You will not meet another man with more interest in the welfare of his students. Visit him in his office for a chat...really great! Super amazing prof. one of the best at McGill!
he's great. a nice guy, works hard to make sure his students have a great grasp of the material. if he gives you a mediocre grade, he makes sure that he goes out of his way to help you to improve for the next of the two papers. overall: fantastic.
great lecturer, engaging, knows his stuff really well. i didn't find he was very open to helping you out if you had questions and he could be hard to pin down, but his knowledge of the subject matter was so sound that it was a pleasure to sit in his class
Great course, learned a lot
Moore is BY FAR the prof at McGill who cares most about his students. This man will bend over backwards to make his students understand the material & gain a genuine appreciation for the historical context of the subject. An engaging lecturer.
Moore is not the most helpful professor in the department. He tries to make it seem that way, but in reality, he is lazy.
he's just awesome, never gets there on time, never finishes class on time but he's an actual teacher, not just a scholar, he can pass info to students without alienating them. super clear. lots of reading, take home exams (not hard). he's great
Moore is one of the best in modern history. He is understanding and conveys his lectures in a clear, sometimes funny, manner The format of the course is good, 2 takehomes and a final as well as conferences that aren't marked. Texts are hit and miss.
Has a patent Marcuse/Deconstructionist agenda. A self-hating American who calls George Washington "a white supremacist" and Robert E. Lee "a traitor". Discourages students from reading dissenting evidence. Never once mentioned Canadian
One of the best profs at McGill. Clear lectures, fair exams, and the midterm papers really helped me to learn how to write good history papers. Everyone should take at least one class with him. A fantastic prof, I learned a lot from him.
The course is great and he is such a nice understanding guy. He is very approachable and very knowledgable on American History.
A knowledgeable professor who is quite cheery. Rarely did my mind wonder off in his class. He gives a heavy amount of reading, but the marking is above fair. He love his students and really seeks to help them. I more than recommend taking this class.
Delightful.
I LOVE MOORE!
He is an amazing professor. He is passionate about the material and will do anything to help his students succeed by meeting with them after class. He was a bit harsh with the marking, but fair in the assignments/final. If you put in the effort, you can easily succeed with Prof Moore. Great class.
An amazing professor who really knows what he's talking about. His classes are very interesting and he talks slow enough to take notes without struggling. The textbooks are also very interesting. Brilliant in class but not very approachable in his office. Definitely worth taking his courses.
Prof Moore is the best I've had so far at McGill. He is funny, interesting, and very enthusiastic. The readings for the class are very reasonable and the papers are open ended and easy. It is not hard to get at least B in this class. I plan on taking additional classes with Moore, who is amazing.
A really good US history course, with emphasis on social aspects like race, religion, consumerism, etc. Prof. Moore's lectures are so clear and easy to follow and the readings are pretty interesting, too. The essays are nice and broad and the grading seemed more than fair. His TAs are awesome, too!
Excellent prof. Very clear and organized. Stimulating lectures and easy grader.
FDR and the New Deal was a good course, but his assignments were rediculous. His lectures were interesting and fun, but his essay assignments were vague and impossible to get right. Unless you can read the professors mind, I don't reccoment this course.
A nice man, however, his ideas seem stale - has he read anything new since graduate school?
One of the best profs here!!
Great lecturing style; highly enthusiastic; FAR TOO LIBERAL--let's it seep into his lectures far too often
I must digress! The course is interesting and the assignments are pretty easy but as a teacher, Moore is not particularly good. He takes weeks to respond to emails and sometimes he doesn't write back at all. Generally, I find him lazy, aloof, and way too far to the left.
Moore is an excellent professor. He lets you know his political views up front and then teaches you everything you'd ever want to know about history. From numbers, to anecdotes, to great readings, you get a complete understanding of US history. And if you need help, you can always go see him anytime
Great Teacher. Very clear and easy to follow lectures. Essays are pretty straightforward. Fun class, overall.
Moore is a pretty good guy, nothing special but he will tell you what you need to do. The workload is light, the readings are good, he usually chooses good movies too show (kudos for Atomic Cafe), and well, I don't usually go to lectures, but they seem tolerable.
Fantastic prof. Really clear, down to earth style in lectures that are fascinating. Class work is easy as pie: two take-home papers and a final, plus fairly light reading for a history course. Sweet guy too, always ready to help. Expect lateness.
I've been lucky enough to have taken 3 classes with this prof., and can't say enough good about him! One of the few prof's who still seems to care about the material, and is more than ready for any question you can throw at him. A little hard to reach outside class, but always takes the time there.
moore is an excellent professor. excellent lectures, excellent readings, exellent person.
Amazing prof. Had Three classes with him. Most interesting history prof at McGill, with maybe Troy as an exception
I still re-read the books he assigned! I think that says it all.
Moore is a very nice professor who cares about his students. There is an average amount of reading but Moore really sums up all the important stuff in class. He is always available in office hours and has a very pleasant attitude. Overall, a recommended course.
Moore to me is a classic history teacher. He is super-intelligent, gives straight-up oral lectures without aids, and is genuinely interested in teaching the class. Best American History prof at McGill, way better than Gil Troy ever could hope to be.
I have had the privilege of taking 5 classes with Prof. Moore. As a history honours student, I have had a lot of history profs at McGill, and he is by far the best. His knowledge of US history is astounding, he's clear in lecture, easy to access in his office hours, and gives very fair essay take home midterms and exams. take everyhing he teaches!
Probably the most INCREDIBLE prof I've had at McGill. Extremely helpful, a very nice man, and he knows so much about American history it is astounding!! I was never interested in American History before this class, and was inspired by his teaching! Thanks so much, professor. Keep up the excellent work.
Probably my favourite prof at McGill. He's extremely nice, helpful, and open minded. The content of his courses is interesting too.
What a great teacher; cares about having students understand instead of just memorize pointlessly. His assignments are challenging without being hard, and allow each student to use their best abilities. So interesting, and so well-informed. Very reasonable about extensions and REALLY helpful comments on essays.
Excellent professor, teaches at a consistently stellar level. Only quibble is that your grade is almost entirely dependent on the TA that you get, which can vary dramatically.
he is passionate, kind, empathetic, and an expert on the kkk in the 1920s, american right wing in the 20th century, 20th century racial/social history
Best history prof at McGill. clear, concise, brilliant. you'll never look at history the same way again. take a class before you graduate even if you are not a history student.
Excellent professor. He is passionate, helpful and geniunely very nice. I have taken several of his classes. I have graduated and we still correspond. His teaching style is very laid back, but don't be fooled into thinking it is an easy A. Getting an A is hard and dependent on your TA. Overall Superb!!!
He's a great guy, and his lectures are rich in information. I found Civil Rights to be a pretty dry course, so I couldn't help but zone out periodically. But he's a wonderful orator and I definitely look forward to taking another one of his courses next year. Oh, one qualm: his required course readings cost a FORTUNE! Get them on reserve if you can
Simply the best!
Real a great-passionate professor. To keep it simple, if you like History this guy serves you well. An amazing orator and I love the laid back option of having a class conference option instead of being stuck around a table with a TA and a couple people. Approved, wish this wasn't my last USHist course.
Prof Moore is the best! He's a great lecturer and a very nice man. Highly recommend him.
This gets said a lot but this teacher really is amazing. I'm not a hist major but I wish i was when taking his class. I've taken several classes with him and he's the best. Class is super interesting and the work is reasonable. I'll take as many classes as i can with Prof. Moore. He makes lectures very clear and interesting as well. Great speaker!
This is the absolute best professor I have ever had at McGill. His lectures are very engaging. He is more than willing to talk to students during office hours. The grading is really fair. Just sit back, relax, (pay attention), and enjoy.
The best! If American history is your thing, you'll be in heaven.
He is the absolute best person and professor. This is the second class I've taken with him (351 last semester) and he just rocks. Readings and grading are very reasonable and lectures are engaging and useful. I would take any class with him.
Super passionate, amazing lecturer. Difficult assignments.
You just can't say enough about the man. He weaves his craft in a masterful way, teaching history with all the passion and clarity that puts him amongst the best profs I've ever had. With Moore you will learn and will NOT want to miss a single lecture. Outside of class he is sincere, earnest and has your best interest at heart. A true teacher.
Such an amazing lecturer. Attendance isn't mandatory but I always go to every single one anyways because he is so great to listen to. Decent sense of humour too. A bit of a hard marker but worth it.
Most helpful professor at McGill. He is the best and wants YOU to succeed.
Such a sweet man, amazing lecturer one of the best professors I've ever had. Sincere, helpful and funny! Do not miss an opportunity to take a class with this man
Inspiring lectures, makes course material very interesting. He's so clear, and as a person he's as genuine as they come. However, if you don't go to class and don't do the readings you won't do well. Otherwise he's a fair marker.
Best History professor at McGill. Do not miss a chance to take a class with Prof. Moore. I've had four classes with him and would take more if I could. Reasonable grading, amazing lectures and a good person.
Professor Moore is a great lecturer, and just a lovely person. If you've been scarred by the many ambivalent professors at McGill, go enjoy his lectures and talk to him in his office hours. He will restore your faith in the university system.
Prof Moore clearly wants his students to learn and to succeed, but you will need to work. Assigns a lot of books, but are very interesting. He's very old school (papers and final) and lectures are just him speaking. He makes lectures interesting and assures that students are well prepared. Papers are very vague so be ready to use all material
Prof Moore is a great storyteller and his grading is incredibly straightforward. His US Between the Wars class is interesting and relevant. Great prof.
Prof Moore is an amazing prof. His lectures are clear. He's extremely passionate and he is my favorite prof at McGill. His class about the Civil Rights Movement inspired me. He is a fair grader, not too hard and not too easy. His essays and finals are straightforward. He is always here to help if you need him to. Take all his classes !!
Huge beauty! I would take his class on anything!
Professor Moore is the best. He is amazing at telling history through stories, ready to talk and help during office hours and a fair grader. You have to do the work to get an A: you won't get a great grade if you don't go to lecture and read the reading. Definitely my favorite professor I've had. Take his classes they're amazing!
Incredible course, incredible man. His lectures are the most engaging I have experienced thus far at McGill, despite the fact that he does not utilize PowerPoint, photos, etc. Just Moore's brilliant mind. Really kind man as well, though I had some trouble with my assigned TA. I would absolutely suggest this course and studying with Moore.
I had heard a lot of great things about Professor Moore prior to taking HIST 393 so my expectations were pretty high but I must say, they were exceeded. Moore is an incredible lecturer- he knows his stuff, and although you don't have to do all the readings to do well, don't be lazy and do as many as you can, he chooses some really interesting ones!
Humble and incredibly passionate man. He makes you understand why history is so important. I've taken 4 classes with him so far and regardless of the subject his lectures, readings, assignments are always inspiring. Do yourself a favour, sign up and go talk to him during office hours, he will definitely change the way you look at uni and even life.
By far the best course I have taken for my major. Incredible lecturer and extremely helpful, Professor Moore is always willing to do his best for you. Usually assigns a few books and/or course pack material. He assigns two midterm papers (6-7 pages each) and two in class final papers. If you are interest or curious about US history, it's a must
By far the best history teacher I've had in 3 years of History major. His lectures are truly amazing, the readings are really interesting and engaging, and he is always willing to help out his students. There are at least 3-4 books plus a thick coursepack, so for those who don't like reading-heavy classes, this might not be for you.
Leonard Moore is perhaps the best teachers I have ever had. He loves the material, knows how to tell a story, and inspires every student in his class. He makes you work for a good grade, but if you do the readings and come to class -- and trust me, you will want to -- you should be fine. I am not a history major but this course was captivating.
Professor Moore is amazing! He is so knowledgable in his field, and truly wants to educate and inspire students. Always available for individual consultations during his office hours, although they get busy because so many students want to speak 1 on 1 with him. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures make you never want to miss!
I have so much respect for this man that 350 characters doesn't even begin to cover what I want to say about him. He is caring, passionate, and the greatest story teller you will meet. If you want someone to change your university experience, he will be the one to do it. Get ready to read, but these are all amazing books. Assignments are fair!
favourite prof at mcgill. if you attend every class- you don't need to worry about all the reading's so much as he is an amazing lecturer. if you don't want to go to class then read the books and you'll be good. 2 short essays, essay final. best way to take a history class- no name/date memorization. favourite prof, taken all his classes
Moore is an expert in his field and his lectures are amazing, but only take his classes if you have genuine interest in history, otherwise it will be boring as hell. Marks were taken from essays that were marked quite harshly so it's not an easy A and he doesn't post slides so you MUST go, but it's worth it for what you learn! Excellent prof/class!
Fantastic prof. You learn an incredible amount in his classes, and you leave feeling much more knowledgeable and fulfilled than before. He is clearly an expert in his field. Lectures are good but there are no slides. Readings are 6 books (!) for 351, and while most are good there are some more boring ones.
Absolutely loved this class. He is clearly extremely passionate and it shows in his lectures. Attendance is essential to do well, as he doesn't use powerpoint or anything. I left every class inspired and have made an effort to take more of his classes. Love him!!!!! Take his classes!!!!
This class is an easy B+/A- for anyone who is good at writing a paper. His topics are interesting as it is, but because he is such an amazing lecturer it makes it so much better! Definitely take his classes.
Having been here for 4 yrs & taken 4 classes with LM, I can confidently say he is the best Prof at McGill. Beyond the wealth of knowledge, inspiring lectures and interesting topics that he has to offer re: US hist is a Prof who genuinely cares about the success, academic experience and well-being of his students - a true rarity at this institution.
Moore is quite simply the best. He is an amazing lecturer, and is so approachable. He has such a genuine care, and kindness about him that is so rare at McGill. He is also so knowledgeable. His classes have inspired me to go into History, and have truly impacted my life. It sounds so cliche, but he is honestly the best.
Moore is one of the best lecturers I have ever heard while at university. He knows so much and you can tell every class.
Professor Moore is one of the best teacher I've ever had in my life! Lectures are not mandatory but it would be stupid to miss them as they are incredibly rich and interesting.
Prof. Moore is definitely the best lecturer in McGill's history department. He is so knowledgeable and his lectures are fascinating. The class is paper-based, and the final is worth 50%. Marks depend a lot on the TA grading and therefore can be subjective.
One of the best history classes I've taken at McGill! He genuinely cares for his students, and this can be seen in his lectures and office hours he provides. Extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the topic. No powerpoint slides are used, so attendance is crucial. Evaluation is extremely clear. Take his class if you can!!
One of the best professors! Brilliant and passionate lecture style. Essays can be somewhat difficult, but they really make you think and engage with the material. Selects interesting reading material, gives fair assessments, and genuinely cares about the success and well-being of his students. Make sure to go to class and take good notes!
This man is a legend. I found myself in his office just chatting about life given his approachability and really made me fall in love with history. Lectures are very inspirational - takes his time to get a thought across because he chooses his words very carefully but extremely eloquent! Love him!!!
Yes, he lectures but throughout the lectures hes engaging with everyone. Everyone opinions are heard
Leonard!!!! One of the best profs at McGill in terms of lecturing ability, course breakdown and overall content. The course was super interesting, although he didnt post anything on mycourses and doesnt use slides (very old school), but its all part of the charm. Course consisted of 2 papers during the sem and 2 on the exam. Highly recommended!!
One of the best history profs at McGill. Such an amazing orator. He usually assigns 6 books, all of which are such interesting books that you will want to keep them even after the course ends. He is also a very caring professor who wants his students to succeed. It will be a shame if you don't take his course while studying at McGill!
Prof moore is genuinely such a good person and actually cares about his students. love him so much and trying to take as many classes as i can w him before i graduate
Leonard is by far the most down to earth, respectful, caring professors I've had at McGill. I've taken 3 classes with him and just signed up to take 1 next year as well. His classes were some of the only classes I never had to desire to skip. The books he assigns are always great, informative reads. His lectures are interesting and engaging!
My favorite prof at McGill. I just finished my 5th course with him.
Cannot recommend him enough. Amazing lectures and fair marking. A true gem at McGill.
The most amazing prof at McGill
Boring prof, harsh marking T.A.s, has little interest in speaking with students. Somehow takes one of the most interesting events in human history and turns it into a bland-as-cardboard praise of Lincoln every two seconds.
I think that Professor Moore taught the topic of Civil War and Reconstruction very well (Despite the below comment from a peer). Midterms were graded fairly, TA's were helpful in helping me improve my writing, with me doing very well in both. Coming from a non-arts major, I found this course to be immensely rewarding and would recommend!
He's fantastic. 393 is one of my all-time favourite courses. Please ignore the recent negative review, it's an engaging and rewarding class with great lectures and fascinating reading material. I learned so much and I'd take it again in a heartbeat. Plus, anyone in McGill History will tell you that Moore is one of the best profs we have.
I'm biased about Moore (taken all of his 300-level courses and am currently his 500-level seminar), but 393 is a rewarding and interesting class. He's the most charismatic lecturer I've had at McGill and truly such a lovely man. Super helpful if you go to talk to him during office hours! He really wants to see his students be successful.
Professor Moore is hands down the best history professor at McGill. He genuinely wants his students to do well and goes to all lengths to ensure this. His teachings are interesting, marking is fair, and he is always available to discuss in office hours. Do yourself a favour and take his classes!
Moore is an icon. No McGill history degree is complete without one (or a handful) of his classes. He's particularly passionate about civil rights (HIST 351) but I'd also highly recommend taking his class on Civil War & Reconstruction (HIST 393). He's a lovely, kind, funny, smart man. Truly a gem.
One of the first professors I ever had at university, and let me tell you, I got lucky. If you have the chance, go to his office hours, hes always happy to talk.
Knows about everything you can know about US history which is great but also makes the lectures super detailed and packed with information. For online school he just posts an hour long audio recording with no visual aids. super interesting content, I recommend you like American history although he is a bit of a hard marker
He's a total gem! Loved the class! He is super knowledgeable and passionate about American history, makes for very interesting (and detailed) lectures. There are few evaluations which makes it easy to keep track of. I'd say the class is an easy B but the extra effort should pay off easily. Highly recommend taking one of his courses!
Amazing prof and so passionate about American history. Lectures are super interesting, however grade was based off of 3 things and the TA's were not super easy markers. Reading helps your essays. Lecture notes are required for your essays but the classes are so interesting you'll want to listen.
Such a wonderful man, he really cares more for his students than any prof i've had in my 4 years. The TA's were quite tough markers but honestly, his passion for the content made up for it. If you're not sure about majoring/minoring in history, take one of his classes and you'll be so excited to take more.
My all time favourite professor. Prof Moore knows what he is talking about and is passionate about his field. Not only a great professor but lovely to chat with in office hours too. If you have any interest at all in US history, any class he teaches is a must-take. Hist 351, 331, 393 + all amazing.
The class isn't hard to do well. However, it's useful to know the account provided on American history from 1910 - 1940 is incomplete; too much economic history is left out despite being one of the cornerstone topics of this time. Overall, you can get more out of your time with other history courses for the same grade & effort level.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! His lectures were the best part of my day. Super interesting and taught through a wide lens. Only 2 papers and a final exam. You have to work hard to get an A on a paper but I think thats the point of it! Prof is really accessible outside of class and always up for a chat. Must take 1 of his classes before graduating McGill.
An exceptional prof. Take a Moore class even if you are not a history major. Best lecturer I've encountered at McGill.
As a course HIST392 is fantastic if you want to learn about the roots of many contemporary social issues on the topics of race, sexuality, gender, and class. Prof Moore is really nice, his lectures can be a bit heavy to get through esp w/o slides, but I found them really interesting. He has a ton of office hour times too
Although the lack of lecture slides can make Professor Moore's lecture somewhat heavy at times, he is incredibly knowledgeable in his subject matter. Would recommend.
Professor Moore is amazing. I could have listened to him for hours. He is knowledgeable, progressive, and he discusses the real issues in American society. The readings are non-fiction books I could have read over the summer. Best class I've taken so far at McGill.
Profesor Moore is very knowledgeable on his subjects. I commend him for giving lectures with little to no notes. My only issue is that he relies a lot of lectures which I'm not too fond of since I have trouble staying awake during them but that is more an issue with me rather than the teacher. He responds to emails very fast.
Despite the interesting content, he emphasizes his views and biases more than an objective outlook on the time period studied.
Could not rate this guy enough. TA was quite particular on the essays, in my opinion, but this is one of the few courses where I genuinely learned so, so much, and felt so engaged doing so. Recommend this course to any and everyone. Pertains so much to our current lives given America's dominance on the world stage. Explains a lot.
extremely great. would take again. Very interesting and anecdote heavy.
Moore is brilliant but he lectures w/o slides or a chalkboard, just very loosely structured talking, and I found that impossible to follow. I ended up not going to class, listening to some of the lectures at home at increased speed, and writing the papers based on that. Loved the grading scheme: 3 papers, final grade is the average of your best 2.
The second class, I have taken with Professor Moore, I highly recommend. Both classes were taken in semesters that were partially or completely online and were graded based on the best 2/3 papers. Very considerate professor who will give you extensions. He holds a lot of office hours, especially with upcoming paper deadlines and will answer emails.
Prof. Moore is an amazing lecturer, he is so sweet, an amazing prof!
the best professor at mcgill ive had. He clearly cares deeply about the subject, his lectures are incredibly interesting and passionate. Just overall a very nice man.
One of the best profs at McGill. Go to lectures and office hours and do the readings, and you'll be sure to get an A. Prof Moore is super helpful outside of class and is very accessible and he is fantastic at lecturing, never a dull moment and makes the material super interesting and easy to follow!
Great prof; he doesn't use visual aids! lectures are only him talking
amazing so sweet so interesting
Most well-rounded professor I've had. Lovely guy.
King Moore. Best prof in McGill. 5 stars.
Very engaging and knowledgable about American history. Loved this class.
Really great professor with great lectures and content. Everything about this course was fantastic.
Dr. Moore is by far the most engaging, thoughtful, yet reasonably critical lecturers we have at UT. Attendance was not required, yet nearly everyone went to class. Classwork was extremely easy, and infrequent, however I would say his lecture style made the information stick more than any other class. If you get the chance to, take a class of his.
All around just the best guy.
Professor Moore delivers engaging lectures, though they can be hard to follow at times. The grading scheme is fair, with papers being the main focus. Tools like unstuck study and ChatGPT can be helpful for study prep. Overall, a worthwhile class.
