No textbook, which greatly hinders understanding of the material. Quizzes poor.
no book, which makes it easy cause the quizzes/tests/homework are consistent.
Funny, tests are hard, homework optional, quizes help you out
No Comments
cool guy, and easy material, but go to class cause there's no textbook
Knows what he's doing, but doesn't convey it well. Also tries to be funny.
his class is fun, but hard as hell...he's a great guy though!!!!
Such a great prof...very understanding!
This guy cracks me up!!!
Good teacher, funny, attendance counts, optional hmwk, weekly quiz, okay tests
easy material, really hard tests, likes to put probs on test that arent like hw
Great guy. Well animated. Class is difficult though and tets are even more.
Impressive, considering he had never taught the class before
he is such a nice funny guy. Tests are REALLY hard if you dont study but quizes are not so bad (weekly). you will love him by the end of the semester!
He's a weird guy doesn't seem to want to help, takes getting used to...tests are hard, quizzes are easy, pretty easy compared to others
Really funny guy, never makes you feel dumb, very helpful. Tests and quizzes are not easy, but he curves, and what calc class is easy??
funny guy, subject is hard but he's willing to help, call on people randomly in class, curves grading scale
Awesome and funny guy. Curves exam grades and overall semester grade. Exams don't really go with HW probs but his questions are easier to understand anyway
he's great. it's calculus so it's hard, but if you work hard then you'll do well.
can we say eccentric? he's a good teacher, goes really fast and will randomly call on people in class, but other than that he's nice enough- calc is hard but if you study and do the homework(which he won't check for) you will do fine
He's a great prof and is pretty entertaining, he knows what he's talking about
He's a great teacher to have whether you have taken calculus in high school or not. If you don't understand a concept or a homework problem, he is very easy to approach during class or during his office hours. For tests, study the homework and lectures.
Excellent Math teacher. Take him. He'll explain things better than any other teacher.
I love this professor! As long as you go to class and do the homework, you should do fine. I knew exactly what to expect everyday in class- no surprises which make it easy to learn!
Nice guy but the calling out random names during class is awful. You can't sit there and let it sink in because you're too worried he'll call on you. When you no the answer, you can't answer! Not a great method.
Pretty cool guy - funny. Moves a little fast but is willing to help. Approachable, which is great. If you have to take 103, he's your man.
He definitely is a math type of guy. Makes class interesting and worth going to. I'm definitely taking him again, so that has to stand for something!
He's a really good math teacher. He explains things with the utmost clarity. I didnt always keep up with the homework, but as long as I did it before the test came around I'd be fine. Nothing's on the test that's not in the homework! Take him, you'll be glad you did!!
honestly, don't know what everyone is talking about. maybe for the cacl geniuses out there, this guy is great, but for someone who isnt to keen on math, definitely try to get in someone elses class. he moves 100 miles a second and is horrible at explaining everything unless you already understand it
Fast? All over the place is more like it. Great teacher though and he sets a weekly schedule for his students (i.e. expect a quiz every tuesday) which is very helpful. Quizzes aren't bad as long as you do the homework which already have the answers! Good class to take!
ok i HATE math and am terrible at it and i am struggling through this class b/c i simply dont understand it, hes a good teacher and really funny and is there to help you but it really is hard to understand what he is talkin about unless you have an idea already
good teacher take him
He's a good teacher. Probably explains things better than some of the others. Kinda goofy, but it makes class more fun.
Not an easy class, but he makes it very enjoyable. Makes you understand the material and you have weekly quizzes to make sure you do homework just to keep up. Definatley take this class, he makes Calculus understandable and not nearly as bad as it should be
This guy teaches some far out material. If you are not good at math just go to every class and do your homework in the math lab where you can get help. Weekly quizzes are beneficial and there is only one midterm and a final. He's a funny guy but be prepared to write a LOT of notes.
I think he makes up what he teaches. Weirdest stuff ever. 103 doesnt mean basic or easy. It's crazy stuff. Van wyk, like bike, is very monotone and dry. Gives sooo many notes. Class is so boring, but gives quizzes every Tues. to help your grade. Take him, and you can take a nap. I give him a B+
If you are thinking of taking 103 becuase you want an easy math course, try algebra or pre-calc. His class contains stuff you have never even heard of. if you do the homework and study you will do fine on the quizzes and tests. Personally I like him becuase he is clear and gives many examples. Its just a lot of writing and you never get out early.
He comes to class wearing jeans and a checkered button down shirt. He gives a quiz every tuesday and homework every night. Do the homework. He gives one midterm and one final. Take both of them. If you follow my directions you will get an A-
He is a weird guy but his class isn't bad. The stuff can be hard that he teaches but he does a good job teaching and explaining it. There are quizes every tuesday, just do the homework and ask questions if you don't understand.
He has a very nice teaching style, easy to understand considering what he teaches. Definitely reccomended

tests and quizzes are pretty straightforward. Class can move kind of fast but that's to expected with a calc class. TAke him if you can, one of the better math teachers are JMU
The best math teacher I have ever had, makes everything very clear. Constantly asks questions, which helps you remember things very well. Very friendly, does his best to make a boring class somewhat entertaining. Attendence not mandatory, but your grade will suffer with one miss, a lot of material is covered. All in all, take him you can.
I got straight A's in math all through highschool, even my senior year in Pre Calc, I got a 100 average, after taking his class I failed the semester. I have never received a grade lower than a "B" on anything. If you want to fail then I highly recommend taking this class, otherwise there are much better Mathmatic teachers at JMU.
Dr. Van Wyk is one of the best professors. I don't know what was up with the person who commented on him before me. He used good examples, called on people in class to make sure everyone understood, his tests and quizzes were so easy. This was the second time I took Calc 131. The first time it was with Carter Lyons and was HORRIBLE!!!
It was difficult to know what to expect on a test and he kept saying he should not be teaching the class because he didn't know what he was doing. I would not recommend him for Math 107.
Hes funny! I am amazed and I think he is too at how little some future teachers know about math. He is sometimes sarcastic though which can be offensive. The class is ridiculously easy though. Have fun with the basic skills test... it sucks and it is graded stupidly.
He is cool. Try to take him if you can. He calls on you during class but it isn't annoying and if you don't get something he keeps asking you questions and walks you through the problem. He is also very approachable. The class is great, the basic skills test is ridiculous, but you have to take that no matter who you have. Take him!
Great professor. The guy teaches extremely well, but also has very high expectations. The tests are hard as hell, expect to study your ass off. But he is always very helpful during office hours and is very clear during lectures. I ended up with a C-, but was well worth having him as a teacher. He does call on people randomly though.
The first day I was petrified, the first thing he said was that his goal was to make us change our major. After the first week he softens up,Honestly I love the class and I'm so glad that I got him. At times his sense of humor can be a little demeaning I think he really is just amazed at how little some students know. Study 4 tests you'll be fine.
I thought this class was super hard but I would take it again to have him. Great teacher with an amusing sense of humor. Go to office hours, don't BS or procrastinate the hw (grades 1 random problem all or nothing), pay attention in class because he may call on you randomly, and you will do great.
This guy is good, the class is no push-over by any stretch of the imagination, but if you work hard then you will do fine. He pulled me kicking and screaming through MTH 245, I would not have taken this course without him.
vanwyk is awesome! he's very helpful during class and out of class. i find him hilarious and actually enjoy going to class. he goes over the hw prob in class and examples of what the chapter was about. i really enjoy his teaching style, he may call on students randomly but he helps you through the problems and never makes you feel stupid. take him!
he definetly calls on you randomly but if you go to class and pay attention you will do well. some people think the class is hard, but a lot of the time its just because they dont put in the effort. glad i got him as my teacher he made the course easy!
ok let's be honest- if you can't add, subtract, do order of operations, etc. you aren't going to do well in any class. vanwyk is the awesome, his class is entertaining, the hw and tests are really easy and hes pretty helpful. go to class and pay attention because he calls on you at random. definitely recommend
Professor Vanwyk is a good professor. He knows the material and he tries to make it as interesting as possible. He calls on you at random, but it gets you involved and helps you understand better. Studying for the tests is necessary, but as long as you know how to do basic math functions then you will be fine. Overall, great teacher! I enjoy him.
Vanwyk is awesome! I took AP Calculus in High School but never really liked math until I took him. He explains everything so well! He will call on you at random but it helps you pay attention and helps you be involved. Pretty funny guy and uses good analogies to help you remember the material. Would love to have him for every math I take! Take him!
Great calc teacher, I have taken many math classes at JMU and he has easily been the best to explain everything. Makes everything very understandable and is extremely fair with what he places n tests. TAKE HIM
He is such a character!I love it!
I really loved Dr. Vanwyk. Course was hard but he is gladly to help during office hours. Be sure you do all the homework problems and come to class prepared!
He is a really funny, sarcastic guy. The tests are kinda hard so definitely do the homework and go to class and take really good notes, which is easy since he writes everything on the chalkboard. He also does a huge curve with your final grade. Really helps.
He is really funny, and explain things really easily. Definitely recommend taking him! He makes sure every student is engaged, and helps you work through problems.
Really indirect on his lectures. I was really looking forward to this class because of the good reviews but I regret taken it now. He has test every Friday with 3 to 4 questions on them, so if you miss one question, you basically fail. I did not like his teaching method at all. stay away if you're unsure about calc.
Dr. Vandwyk is awesome! I really don't understand what the guy below me is thinking. He gives good lectures and provided excellent examples! He makes a hard class the easiest class ever! I would take him again!
I already took AP Calc in high school (didn't do well on the exam), but his class seemed easier. He gives homework that helps, and his lectures are straight to the point. Tests are doable and will give you a curve at the end of the semester if you show up to class, although attendance isn't taken. He's nice and won't insult you if you try a bit.
Professor Vanwyk is a pretty good teacher. Hes really smart, however he could present the material more straight forward to the class. His lectures are boring but go bc. examples are sometimes on the tests. Only 3 tests, final and weekly quizzes make up your grade. No homework, but he doesnt grade test that easy. Curves final grade in class up.
He makes calculus fun! Homework is mandatory to understand the material but he doesn't grade it. There is a quiz every week, other than test weeks. He gives partial credit on tests so show your work! He is a corky math geek that is funny and keeps you involved. He uses a notecard system to randomly call on students every class. Take him!!
VanWyk wasn't terrible but he was nothing compared to my 205 prof and that was a disappointment. often seemed annoyed at having to explain algebra that he assumed everyone knew, which is understandable but made asking questions intimidating. I could've done better if I did the homework more cause he kinda moves quickly in class. overall not bad
I loved Vanwyk. I thought 231 was pretty easy and there were only a couple tests and a cumulative final. He was really funny and very clear and organized. There was never any homework due (but he assigned some as practice and would go over it in class). 10/10 would take again.
304 is such a hard class but he is an AMAZING professor. He's super sassy and sarcastic but never ever demeaning. You could ask the dumbest question and he would answer it for you. The lectures are confusing due to the topics but he'll explain anything to you again or in office hours. Tests have questions that we went over in class. I LOVE THIS MAN
Only tests. Van Wyk wrote the "textbook" that is used for the class so no worries buying anything. Tests are fairly challenging. Homework is not required but certainly helps for the test since he picks everything from the homework or lectures. Participation is a requirement, he has you write your name on a notecard and calls on people from thos
Van Wyk is the man!!! Really funny and laid back, didn't collect any homework, no quizzes, just 4 exams that were fine if you study the material. He's awesome at explaining things and really good at answering questions. By far my favorite math professor, would definitely take him again.
Prof. Van Wyk is an awesome human being. Even though the content of Discrete Mathematics is very difficult, he definitely tries to make it digestible for the entire class. If you don't understand a concept, he will do everything he can to explain it to you. It's a tough class, don't get me wrong, but he would be my best choice for a professor.
Best professor I've ever had! He definitely knows what he's talking about during lectures and office hours. He's SUPER willing to help you outside of class but you have to put in the time to study, do the homework problems, and graded homework problems to do well. Would easily take a class with him again!!
At JMU there are a few math professors that you can compare with Van Wyk!! You will definitely learn something in this class and as long as you do weekly homeworks which take not more than 2 hours per week, you will do just fine in this class.
Professor Van Wyk is so cool. He seems not to care about you but indeed he does. He makes sure you understand what he is taking about. I like his folders of "crap" and "more crap". He knows how to teach. 245 is the most difficult math course so far and he teaches you everything in a way for you to understand.
Van Wyk is the best! He seems intimidating at first, but you'll quickly see that he cares about the content and the success of everyone in the class. 245 can be challenging, but Van Wyk always finds the best way to explain the concepts. Tests aren't too difficult and you have a plenty of time to complete homework. Would highly reccommend!
Dr. Van Wyk is an extraordinary professor. Discrete Mathematics has an intimidating reputation, but Dr. Van Wyk teaches in such a way that youd have to cut off your ears and gouge out your eyes AND never come to class to not learn something from his class. Hes very helpful on both suggested and mandatory homework and hes also really funny.
I took Discrete Mathematics with Dr. Van Wyk in the fall last semester, and he told us that he would be teaching MATH315 in the spring, so I took it. I learned so much, even through my mistakes in his class, and I feel prepared to tackle MATH410 and MATH430. He is an amazing teacher and he's hilarious. I can't say enough good things about him.
He is a decent teacher but he writes everyone's name on an index card and then randomly calls on people all day. There is an ok way to do this but he is pretty hostile about it. Sometimes he is straight up rude if you dont know the answer. Also, his grading is pretty rough. He takes points off for small stuff just to make sure you dont get arrogant
Van Wyk is possibly the most chill professor I've ever met. Just don't be dumb and you'll be fine
He explains things very well and always tries to help when you have questions. He gives weekly quizzes and they are the only grades besides tests. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go you will be confused. He's also very laid back.
He is a good professor but grading is very rough. He takes 80% of points off from a problem if you even make a silly mistake. Doesn't give that much partial credits. Overall not bad.
Really difficult to get him outside of office hours and he's not really good at explaining things because he assumes you know it. He was fine but I'm not a math major so his class was difficult. Some exams are exactly what you would expect others are questions you've never seen before and not based on the homework
This is my 4th time taking Van Wyk. I think thats enough said. The man is a magnificent teacher and he is hilarious. Aside from going to class, which I recommend, office hours are super helpful (for all levels, but) especially for MATH431 because rings are a tough concept to grasp and fields are even more tough.
your final grade is 50% quizzes 25% homework, and 25% the final he does not offer re dos or extra credit if this is the only math class you need then he's fine, to pass his course your final average need to be a 50, personally the way he explained things didnt make sense and his lectures quizzes, and homework didnt really correlate to one another
Quizzes are literally 5 questions worth 2 points each so if you miss 1 you automatically get an 80%. Tests never matched with homework and they were worded really weird. Plus the homework website he uses is terrible. Funny guy, but the way he grades stuff is tough. No re-dos or chances for extra credit opportunities.
He explains stuff pretty well but at the same time expects you to know some of the stuff before hand. The homework was a bit difficult because there were no videos to explain what to do. Overall he's a great professor, and he plays minecraft as well, so that helps. He hooked me up with a C- even tho I failed the final and most quizzes.
His lectures were every good and he made it easy to take notes. Only problem was, we had one five question quiz every week and he didnt grade anything else except webassign and that was graded at the end of the semester. It was very hard to know your actual grade. The quizzes we open notes though so that was nice. There were no tests but a final.
Van Wyk is a cool guy but not a great Prof. He expects you to just remember all the math you learned years ago in HS. his hw reflects what he teaches in class but then you take the quiz and its not even close to what he was teaching. theres no tests just a midterm and a final so goodluck if u dont remember older math cause he wont teach it.
Off the bat he seems super chill and laid back, but almost too laid back where he doesn't care about your grade it feels. With just homework and a quiz once a week your grade can suffer if you continually dont get 100 on homework or quizzes. I also asked for extra help once and he was very rude about it but still granted it for me.
Van Wyk was an awesome professor for 231. He explains things very well and is pretty funny and likable. The class really isn't that much work as long as you take notes and show up you should be fine. He assigns short and easy homework and one 5 question quiz every week that's open note if you take good notes they'll be easy. No tests only a final.
The worst professor I have ever had in my academic career. This guy does not care about you or your grade, and he is so inredibly lazy to the point where the whole class was poorly prepared for all of the quizzes and exams. He was so bad at teaching and so lazy to the point where most people in the class have to retake. TAKE MY WORD: DONT TAKE HIM!
This class can be difficult simply because it is calc 3, but Van Wyk is a very good teacher that provides a lot of examples. He is also a very fun teacher that makes class entertaining and is always available to provide extra help and answer any questions. Definitely stay on top of your homework.
Answers any and all questions with zero judgement, no matter what they are. Laid back, but that made me more comfortable asking questions and getting feedback. Gives good explanation and context behind each concept. Plans his course schedule well enough so that you're not rushing through the material at the end of the semester. Excellent professor!
This guy is hilarious. The content of the class is hard, but he's very good at getting to the root of what confuses you as long as you ask him to help. Also, for this class that I have with him, he does NOT give a final. The "final" is just all of the Webassign homeworks added up, which is nice because you get 5 tries per question in Webassign.
Dr. Van Wyk is one of the best professors that I have had at JMU. He is the most laid-back professor ever and makes going to class worth it. He explains calculus in a way that is very easy to understand and provides a lot of practice problems (do those). He is overall just a great guy but if you don't show up to class you might have a hard time
His teaching really makes you understand the content, and if you have any questions, he'll take the time to give a in-depth and comprehensible answer. Also, he makes a lot of jokesT he tests are not that hard if you took notes and paid attention during class. Would recommend going to every class because the lesson all matter.
He is, without a doubt, the most brilliant professor in the Mathematics Department at JMU. His brain is absolutely gigantic. He's also funny and laid back, but you absolutely cannot fall behind in his class or you'll pay the price for it. Doesn't curve exams, but he will round your grade up a little bit at the end of the semester.
Dr. Van Wyk is one of the best Math professors at JMU. He is a very funny and chill guy and genuinely cares about the students learning the material. He is very approachable about everything and explains all of the topics very well. He assigns homeworks through webassigns but if you dont attend class then you'll most likely fall behind.
One of the best math professors. Very hard class but he made it easier to understand. Calls names from index cards rather than raising hands. Exam questions are similar to practice/examples. 3 exams and a cumulative final. Had him MWF and Thursdays we did group questions. Has a rude/interesting sense of humor. Made me laugh many times.
Great professor!! He is so good at explaining things and doesn't move on until he thinks everyone understands. He is also accessible outside of class. Not to mention he is super funny! I'm never bored in class. I love this class, and I would take Dr. Van Wyk again any chance I get.
Homework is graded by 1 of the 6 problems, tests are lecture heavy with usually one question that he makes up and it will quiz you on mathematical definitions. Know the material inside and out and get all the details down and an A is attainable. His partial credit is horrible, so I'm kicking myself over a B since I forgot some minor details.
Dr. Van Wyk is a great choice for Calc 3. Grade is based on 3 tests, cumulative final, and online homework. Curved based on 50% being passing. Van Wyk is hilarious and made the difficult material a little more enjoyable. He is also very good at showing examples and explaining himself or the math. Calc 3 is hard, but definitely passable w/ Van Wyk!
The exams I thought were easy but the class overall does terrible on them. The questions are super fair, they are questions that are very general. You should go to class, but I made a friend and had them send me the notes and I did fine. Great guy, you should take him. I got an 88.8% and that was an A-.
Van Wyk is super laid back. He'll "pick on you", but it's all in good fun. For the life of me, I cannot tell if he enjoys teaching or not. His tests are very straight forward: pay attention in class and you'll do just fine.
Prof Van Wyk is slightly odd, but a pretty funny, laid back guy. He randomly calls on students using cards, so be prepared to answer. Exams are fairly straight forward and not too difficult.
I've seen others write similarly about this professor, and I have to agree: Dr. Van Wyk is the man. Took him last semester, got a B in his proofs course but he rounded me up to a B+. He's an amazing lecturer and it's clear that most students who have taken his courses respect and love him if you talk to them. He's very funny and very straight up.
Definitely recommend going to classes or you could be really lost. There are webassign assignments for every chapter but the main grades for the class are the tests.
He truly is a great teacher and I loved taking his class last semester. He does randomly call on people throughout the class to answer random questions which can catch you off guard. But other than that he was great to learn from and just a nice person in general.
He is overall just a great guy that loves teaching and really knows math. He is very helpful and funny. Every class is a lecture on a chalkboard; very old school.
Have to go to class and pay attention well to do well, but attendance isn't mandatory. Tests are very similar to examples done in class. Very laid back guy, calls on you for questions but they're always easy and even if you get it wrong he just jokes about it. Every class is a lecture but Tuesdays are group problems, very helpful. Very nice guy
