Material is somewhat easy, lots of extra credit, but don't expect help from this man he can barely speak and write in English
Very hard to understand. Has good intentions but doesnt speak/write English. Dont take it, classtime is waste of time. I attended test days, so did the rest of the class. Heed my warning
goes out of his way to make sure you pass. if you pay attention, you can follow what he says. students were often rude and lazy. tests come directly from his notes. lots of extra credit. works to get you interested in material.
Does not speak or write English very well which can make studying hard and lectures impossible. Very odd man, but understanding when it comes to grades. Do the extra credit and you can get an A with C's on the tests.

This professor is easy. People say that he is hard to understand but if you actually listen you can understand him. His exam question are directly from the study guides and he is very helpful when you need help.
Martinez, is so nice. If he sees that you try and put effort in he will go out of his way to help you out. Study study guides and do extra credit. he is alittle hard to undertnad, but makes up for it with how helpful he is.
His grammar is just as bad as his english. Extra credit is easy and all the quizzes are online. Test don't come directly from the study guide. Buy the book, read it, and come to class for exams only.
You can't understand him at all. He gives extra credit which helps. I never went to his class and never studied and I passed the class. As long as you do the extra credit you should be okay but I suggest you just get another teacher.

He's a really nice professor, however he is quite hard to understand, but if you have any questions he is gladly willing to explain something to you. The class is really easy as long as you study for the exams, you don't need to go to class but he gives out extra credit if you do.

A very nice man, class is kinda boring and with such a cool subject matter it could have been great, but if u keep up with the reading and online quizzes u never have to go to class and can still get an A or B...easy class if you put in the effort...he really isn't all that hard to understand

He loves what he does! Its kinda hard to understand. He gives at least like 60 extra credit points... Is easy to get an A or B in his class with some effort. Study form the quizzes and notes. If you do well on the quizess you will do good on class!!

I thought it was going to be difficult at first, but this professor will go out of his way to help you out. Class was boring for me since his English is difficult to understand, but makes up for it by giving extra credit. Most of the test questions come from the extra credit assignments, so the class wasn't as bad as I thought. I got an A.

He is a great teacher and most of his test are online. He gives out alot of extra credit I already have 50 extra point in his class. He does have an accent but you can still understand him. He is very helpful and will do almost anything to help you. He is very nice and loves teaching. This is an excellent class to take.
So boring, I love astronomy but I had no enthusiasm for his class. You can get away with never going if you study on your own.

the class is hard, because there is so much information to take in. however, professor martinez gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. hes really not even that hard to understand, you just have to actually LISTEN.
Professor Martinez is a very hard person to understand. He does try to make the material interesting, but he makes to many mistakes. He gives online quizes, but on 33 different occations he had the wrong anwsers, so you learned incorrectly, because he told you to study from those. Avoid this teacher.
He is hard to understand but if you read the notes you can pass the tests easily. Plus he gives SOOO much extra credit, I would take another class with him because of all the extra credit he gives.

This guy has no idea what he's doing. He posts the chapter notes on blackboard but they aren't exactly like the ones he shows in class. Extra credit saves a bunch if you go to class. Make sure if you take this class, take it with one of your friends. Also, take the online quizzes as much as you can(until you get a high enough grade) it helps.
the class was easy. All you have to do to pass the class is do the extra credit, go to the observatory, do the quizzes. Just click on any answer for the quizzes until u get a good grade. Also for the test just remember the answers to the practice tests, thats about 80% of the test. you never really have to go to class
He has a very strong accent, however he was pretty interesting. You were graded with quizes done by remote control, along with his tests. Which by the way were not difficult, especially since he posts guides the week before, with questions that are on the test, word for WORD. People are just lazy!!

My only complaint with this guy was that he was extroadinarily boring and after the first exam I didn't pay attention to him at all and just read, I got a 111.65 on his 2nd exam. I'd recommend not paying attention to him, sleep and just do the clickers and you'll do great, ton of extra credit and very leanient with grading. Not hard to understand
Going to class helps alot. You dont have to but time to time show up and definitely read the chapters and his notes. If you read the chapters and then go to class, you will understand very well. The teacher is really into the subject so thats no problem. Understanding him isnt too bad. Most people say you cannot understand him but you can.

Very easy class. Going to class is not mandatory but I would recommend going because its part of the extra credit he gives. Very easy class but you have to not be lazy..which I am. XD. He gives you lots of chances to get extra credit if you come to class but he is so freaking boring and hard to understand what he is saying. He is a very nice man though. Just study notes, read the book, try not to listen to what he verbalizes too much and you'll be alright.

SOOO boring! Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's part of his extra credit, so I'd suggest it. Even though he's boring and I had trouble with the tests, there are a lot of online quizes you can take multiple times and he also opens them all up at th end of the semester. 2 tests are online.Not so interesting, but it's not hard to get a good grade!
I was very close to not taking his class because of these reviews, and a friend that had him. Well Luckly i did because i got an A. Now, he can be hard to understand at times, but if you just listen you can understand him. Also go to class for the extra credit and take the online quizes. He was an easy teacher for me and I'm not a science nerd.

His astromomy class is really easy. since there are about 150+ people in the class, he curves all the test grades. the quizes are super easy since almost everyone cheats and gets away with it. he's kind of weird but thats okay because his class is definately easy to get an A in!

AST2002 at FAU was a joke compared to UF's, haha. Really easy-going teacher. Some people might have a problem with his accent (especially when he says "space dust"). Really loved his lectures. Quizzes and exams were too easy. Too much extra credit in exams... I crammed and studied 8 hours before each exam and I got 98% as my overall grade, lol...
this prof is awesome. curves and gives so many EC. if you dont walk away from this class with a good grade than you are absurdly lazy and unintelligent so you will have deserved it.

This is one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. He may be difficult to understand at first, but if you go to class (clicker in hand!) and listen to his lectures/powerpoints, you will not have to study. You can go to the observations if you'd like, but I didn't and I managed to have a B. The quizzes aren't hard, just go to class!
Astro itself is a little complex but since its an intro class prof Martinez makes it possible that you get the grade you deserve taking in account the effort you put in. Lots of extra credit is offered and I highly suggest you do them because if you don't you will absolutely positively regret it in the end. Online quizzes are annoying yet useful.
Just go to class, use your iclicker and dont forget to do the quizess they help you a lot if you are not a great test taker like i am. I dont recommend this class is hard and astronomy sucks
Has a heavy accent, but is respectful to students. His tests are easy, and he curves one of them (there r 3). You can take the quizzes as many times as u want before the deadline, and he'll give u the highest grade. these r really helpful to prepare u for exams. i never used the textbook, but his notes.
Dr. Martinez was an excellent teacher, he really cares about his students, he reminded me of a middle school teacher. Mid-semester I just stopped going to class though(it's really boring!), you can just read the book and that's what the quizzes are based on. I definitely recommend this class for an easy credit!!
Mr. Martinez is a fantastic instructor. While his accent is quite muffled and will no doubt take time to get used to, you will get through it in no time. Great guy, and quite excitable when it comes to course material. I ran into him and told him I enjoyed his class and guess what? He gave me a FREE book for my Physics 2 class! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I had this professor for Astronomy. Very tricky online quizzes every other week. It's a pain, because what one would think Astronomy is (alien lifeforms) is boiled down to an extremely boring science. It's formulas, chemistry, and most of all was the most boring class I've had in my three years in school

this class was hard!! okay first of all you need to go to class all the time for i clickers. he gives you online tests which are hard.. you need to network in that class so you can get answers.. his extra credit isn't alot.. he doesn't make sense and its not an easy topic and his final is worth half of your grade and he is adding a midterm now
okay..there are 7 online tests, they are not easy..you really have to study his notes hardcore b/c the questions are not straight forward...however there managable i got high b's and A's on them..extra credit offered: only 6 points... whats bad is the final's worth the majority of ur grade..i got a 75 on it and went from a B+ to a 79.9!! be careful
ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Poor grammar on tests and power points riddled with spelling errors. Not willing to acknowledge fault on incomprehensible test questions resulting in lower grades. Online blackboard calculating overall grade incorrectly. Not helpful at all. DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING UNLESS YOU HAVE TO.

I have no idea why there are even any positive comments about this guy. He was the worst teacher I've ever had. Notes are totally confusing, online quizes are really hard (used google entire semester), AND his accent is undiscernable. If you're not already science savvy, don't take him. Only people who have science backgrouds can do well.
He was an absolutely terrible teacher. If i wasn't so interested in astronomy, I would have dropped the class. By far the worst teacher I have ever had, and most likely ever will have. No book until a month left in the semester because he decided to write it himself, leaving the classes dependent on his powerpoints and lectures. These ppt and lectures were horrible and made no logical sense. The online exams always had spelling errors and were confusing.
I enjoyed the material but hated the Professor. He is unhelpful and unclear. I couldn't understand his heavy accent and only went to his class for the iClicker pts. All exams but the final are online. I went to the EC observations which raised my grade by a whole letter. I got C's on almost all the tests and final grade was an A. DO EC!!!
This teacher enjoys teaching the class but has a heavy accent so if youre not familiar with another language itll be difficult to understand him. Main things are iClickers and online tests except the final. somewhat easy just look over the notes before you take ANYTHING. Be patient. Somewhat interesting.
If you are going to take this class, I would suggest the Pass/Fail option. That way you can get your credits without hurting your GPA. Also, I did NO work at all and Passed! :) Easy class. I am glad I didn't take it standard mode.
If you don't get an A in his online Astronomy class, it is your own fault. You do not need to watch the lectures for the tests, even if you do not read the text the questions can be googled. All of the tests can be taken at least twice and all contain extra credit. He gave two extra credit assignments AND bumped everybody's grade up at the end.
Aww this guy is so cute! Hes hispanic and has a heavy accent but hes not too hard to understand. Very good professor really cared about everyone and their grade the class was very easy and he does have an accent but that does NOT take away from how good of a professor he is. I took this class online over the summer. Class was not easy but also not hard. Answers can be looked up online. Lectures are long to watch but can be viewed at any time. Over all a good class to take if you need a science.

Also, he wrote the textbook which isn't the greatest. He'll ask "Why?" about a lot of things in it but won't specify the answer.

This guy is the cutest thing. He really love astronomy and thinks everyone should love it. Get in a group to take the online quizzes. Take notes in class boring but worth the A. Take in summer its over before you know it. Keep mouth shut don't ask questions so he can get on with it.
Leonardo was an awesome teacher. His accent is not that bad & he is cute and at times he can be funny. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and it shows! I loved this class and I highly recommend taking it. (Also, the physics isn't that bad - everyone stressed that it was physics based but it is very limited and watered down)

Lectures are all online and he does open book tests that are also online. I got a 104% in the class easy. All of his tests and exams have extra credit on them.

Just the nicest old spanish guy u could imagine. I sat near the front every class and it wasnt that boring (class about OUR universe). DONT write notes, he goes fast. Just highlight in ur book! Can tell he really likes the subject but has a lot of problems speaking English which makes it hard. Goes back and forth with answers. You'll do fine if you do iclickers and take good notes for his tests, tests come from book and notes but the book is still a work in progress.
Martinez is such a nice guy and I thought his class was interesting (always thought astronomy was cool). The class consisted of online tests for about 2 chapters each, a group paper, MidTerm, and Final. It is not crucial for you to be there for lectures, other than attendance, but some info he mentions are on tests. It's important to read the text.
He's just adorable and so sweet. You can tell he really likes what he does and he's fascinated by astronomy. I barely went to class and I still did fine. I took pass/fail, but if I didn't I could've prob got an A or B. He's really nice and tries his best, but it's up to you to do the work. I'm lazy and it wasn't hard to catch up. Just do the work.

This class seems easy at first but it gets hard at the end. We had 7 tests: one every 2 weeks, a midterm and a final. The attendance is not required but u can get points with the icliker. There is extra credit for going to solar and night observations. He is a great teacher overall people can learned from the seasons of the earth to black holes.
I was super interested in astronomy going into the class and realized it was a lot tougher than i thought it would be. The tests and quizzes are pretty difficult, but they are all online. The book is necessary if you want a passing grade. If you take good notes and use the book while you take the tests you should get a pretty decent grade.

I LOVED this teacher. He ranks as one of the best teachers I have ever had and I don't think I will forget him. Mostly because he REALLY cares about his students and he REALLY loves to teach. Yes he has an accent, & fumbles a bit & makes typos but he makes sure you understand. I'm an art major! Not science-smart and I totally got it. Loved him!
There are those who say that Professor Martinez is boring and incomprehensible, but I have to say that Professor Martinez is one of the best professors I ever had. The class is very interesting, and although it is required to do work, it is worth it. You learn so much from this class and about the world around us. I definitely recommend him!!
Pro. Martinez is probably one of the sweetest most passionate professors I have ever had. He truly cares if his students are learning, and understand how difficult astronomy can be. He is always there to help. But the course can be difficult if you aren't a disciplined student. Tests are online, but exams are in class. Attendance IS mandatory.
I'm glad I never read the reviews before class. Great teacher, always trying to help even the ones who don't deserve. He gives extra credit on everything. The online tests, the mid and final exams in class + you can get 6 extra points for visiting the astronomy lab. Didn't use the book much. Just the slides was enough. End up with 107 out of 100
was kind of nervous after reading the reviews...class was hard but tests werent bad bc open book...good extra credit opportunities...he was a little hard to understand but still got an A in the class...cares about students...good professor
The class itself isn't hard but the tests are a bit difficult. Good news is tht all his chapter tests are online & open book so I recommend you get the book. His final is in class so you will have to study for that. When he lectures he goes fast so I also suggest you get a laptop to take notes with. If actually you try you should be fine.
His lectures were a bit boring, but I don't recommend missing them. His seven tests are online, so I recommend getting your notes AND the book together. Take the test with friends if you really want to. The midterm and final were both in-class. Everything is multiple choice.
Martinez means well, but his lectures are very boring! Many typos, grammatical, and punctuation errors in PPTs. In fact, he lectures in Spanglish sometimes. Attendance is mandatory. He asks iclicker questions to see if you paid attention. All quizzes and projects are online. Theyre very easy if you have the book. Midterm and final are in class though. You must study for those! Boring 3 credits if you're not a science major or have no interest in science
I thought the students below were exaggerating with how difficult he us to understand, but they were spot on. It really sucks because he seems like he loves this job, but it's just not for him. Very difficult class. Don't take it if you don't have to. Best of luck and go Owls!
This class gave me a run for my money. Don't underestimate the easiness of it just because the quizzes are online..they are very detail-oriented and you must read the book. iClicker participation and going to the extra credit lectures WILL boost your grade, a lot. Both exams are extremely difficult so STUDY! Very helpful TA & caring professor.
The professor means well, but doesn't have good teaching skills. His exams are MUCH MORE COMPLEX than his lectures. The only quizzes SAVED my grade BUT I had to read EVERY chapter and take good DETAILED notes to even have a chance. I asked a question in class and went to his office hours - he really tried to help, but still made no sense. :(
if you're interested in astronomy you're going to do fine. he offers so much extra credit on everything we do and it saves your grade once the midterms and finals come around. he's hard to understand but if you pay attention you'll know what he's saying and just show up to class because the iclicker is a big part of your grade
he was awful. He barely speaks English and his excitement over the study of stars is kind of cute, it is really hard to get into what he is saying. I found myself constantly falling asleep and zoning off. If this isn't fulfilling a required course, skip it. It's way too much work for the results usually yielded.
Class was very boring ONLINE and there was way too much work. I took it as an elective so I thought that I would be fine, but I struggled a lot. I wouldn’t recommend if you are looking for an “easy” course. Prof. was fine but the class was just too hard.
One of the best prof at FAU. Tests aren't that easy, but if you take notes and study - its not a problem. He's love for AST is so awesome, and if you have any interest in the subject - you will LOVE this class.
His accent is overbearing and makes it impossible to understand anything he is saying. The class would be interesting if I could understand him. The worst part is that he wrote the textbook that he requires you to buy, so there are numerous misspellings and grammatical errors. This class seriously gave me ulcers.
I loved Mr. Martinez! His accent isn't' as bad as some people make it out to be. His love for astronomy really makes the class interesting. Definitely learned a lot! Quizzes are hard if you don't study. But he's overall a really funny and good teacher.
He does have an accent that could hinder understanding. You must read the book before taking the TIMED! online quizzes and make sure you do the iClicker questions. The class project is easy if you read through it. Definitely a nice person otherwise that does try and care. Go for the pass/fail option when you register.
Professor has an extremely thick accent. Class jumps into difficult topics right away and it is very easy to get lost. Tests have questions that are not reviewed in class/in the textbook. Not recommended for an elective.
I absolutely loved Mr. Martinez. You NEED to read the book, because he tends to jump from topic to topic and goes back again for reviewing. His clicker quizzes are easy if you pay attention to the power points. He posts STUDY GUIDES which are extremely helpful. DO THEM FOR YOURSELF, AND YOU WILL PASS HIS TESTS I ASSURE YOU! Such a sweetie.
Class is super easy. A bunch of online quizzes that you can pass easily even if you haven't thoroughly read the book, and extra credit on every one of them. Midterm and final were supposed to be in-class but he actually put them online, open-book. His English is terrible so class is frustrating, but attendance is required for iclicker. Nice guy.
His actual methods are poor. He has such a thick accent it's hard to understand. He continuously messes up his powerpoints and contradicts the information in the book. Class is heavy on I-clicker and quizzes, yet he lost all our I-clicker points so now we have nothing and have to start over again and the semester is nearly over. Overall poor class
This class is super easy, but the teacher is highly disorganized. Attendance and extra points are given via the iClicker, but he lost all that data. He makes so many errors while presenting, and his textbook is just as bad. I learned nothing in a class that should've been very interesting.
Not a good teacher at all. He ignores questions when you ask them and is almost impossible to understand. You have to basically teach yourself. Take anything else but this.
This professor was terrible. Completely unhelpful, terrible teaching skills, doesn't answer emails promptly and sometimes doesn't answer the question. He uses text language in everything, and seems to not know much on the subject, even though he wrote the book. Class was unreasonably hard for a 2000 level elective. Completely screwed up my grades.
Hate hate hate. You cant understand him. WORST PROF EVER STAY AWAY!!! Plus he wrote the book so it is just as nonhelpful as he is.
Martinez is very foreign, and for me, tough to understand, especially w difficult material. Unclear grading criteria, tests have almost nothing to do with material. Don't take this class unless you already have a strong basis in physics, math, and chemistry. Not an easy class by any means. Prof doesn't help.
This Professor is horrible. You cannot understand almost a single word that comes out of his mouth due to his strong accent. Iclicker is for points and it is miserable to sit through his lectures. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS!
The lectures were boring and long. He also has a thick accent so it was often hard to follow. The concepts of the class are very interesting, there is just a lot of information. His tests are very specific, but at least they are available online.

I ended up with a B+ in this class & all As in my other 4 classes. The irony though because I worked extremely hard for this class. The tests are VERY tough its either you know the material or you don't there is no way you can get past it. Make sure to do the observatory credits! IT WILL HELP. If you aren't willing to work you ass off. Don't take.
Beware of heavy accent, it can be hard to understand him and the quizzes are extremely difficult sometimes, you have to read the book in order of having a chance at passing. Highly recommend going to the observatory for extra credit.
Do not take this professor! I ignored all warnings on here, and it might cost me a good grade. He is impossible to understand, his accent if very thick and his writing makes hardly any sense.

He is a good professor. His accent is not nearly as bad as others complain. You do have to study hard to pass his class. He assigns online quizzes every 2 chapters, but they are not that bad. Study and you will pass with an A. Offers extra credit.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! I took the class online and it was the biggest mistake I've done. His directions for assignments are extremely unclear and confusing. He takes at least 2-3 days to respond to emails. The quizzes and tests barely match any of the material in the textbook. He NEVER followed the dates on the syllabus.
You need to read the chapters, he provides powerpoints which you should also go over but its not enough by itself for quizzes. Complete all of the Study Guides! it will get you through the exams faster and you will see the majority of it in the exam. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. There are a few group projects. I rented my book $10.
This class was very difficult for me but he was there when I needed help. The tests are very difficult and so are the quizzes. You really have to study and understand the material in order to get a good grade. I would AVOID taking him if you are not interested in this topic.
