great teacher, dont buy the book... Hungarians rule!!
funny, nice, overall good prof. take his class!
Class is interesting, clear and organized. I enjoyed going to his class.
very smart, interesting, nice, funny, helpful guy. his classes are great!
Great lectures! If you take detailed notes on all his lectures, don't buy book!
my fav. history prof., extremely intelligent and very intersting
awesome

O.k. folks Dr Heretz is THE best professor, truly.
Very smart, take good notes and u will do good, dont buy the book, nice guy

hot,hot, hot
EXCELLENT COMMAND OF SUBJECT MATTER. BRILLIANT MAN. HIS LECTURES ARE QUITE INTERESTING. VERY COMPASSIONATE, CARES ABOUT HIS STUDENTS' COMPREHENSION OF MATERIAL
Extremely intelligent, he knows what he is talking about and he has a great command over the subject. Simplifies the topics for the students to understand. Has a dry sense of humor to make the class enjoyable. Overall wonderful
The best Prof i had as an undergrad for sure. but you dont need to buy the book. dry sense of humor and very interesting discussion.
Gotta take this guy, It is just that simple
Well class...this dude knows he's stuff..he give you an outline every class you take notes review them and he give easy quizzes...the book only helps if you want to be able to participate in class...he's real cool...i'd take him again...
If you want to get him to flustered mention sex in the discussion- he can't handle it - excellent guy- funny, bright, leads you to where you need to go - doesn't hammer his view- sounds like propaganda to me.
an awesome teacher..if u have to take history take him
Great prof. Learned a Lot. Essays cant get any easier but going to class is worthwhile. He tells you on the 1st day of class its a hard course when really its not bad at all. Just take notes, and you will do ok
Great professor and extremely smart. His class is the type of class you can get by in fairly easy, or, if you choose to, you can work very hard and learn something while mastering the subject.
There is nothing bad to say about this man, he has an unbelievable grasp over his field. The man can do a three hour lecture without notes and still keep his students interested. Awesome professor
he is fabulous. the lectures aren't boring at all and he is funny too. he has an excellent grasp of the subject matter and is absolutely smart as hell. as a history major, i reccommend him to anyone!
One of the best professors I've ever taken. He is very nice, helpful, funny and extremely knowledgable. Very fair workload and grading. I would take him for every history class if I could.
Very entertaining class, you take a lot of notes but it's not so bad. Very funny guy whose lectures are like one big story. Loves what he does and it shows everyday. Class isn't that hard. Take if you can!!!
Really good teacher. Recommend u take him. Alot of notes but very clear, tests and quizzes are easy as long as u study.
Presented the information in a very understandable. I still use the stuff he taught and i took the class a year ago
Dr.Heretz talks A LOT!!! A tape recorder is almost a good investment for him course. But in all his information is well outline and to the point making him a great teacher. He really knows everything I swear!!
he tells you that his class is very hard, in fact it wasnt. as long as you go to class every single day, and take good notes. it is so easy to pass his class. just listen carefully and study alittle bit and you should be able to pass the class with a B.
Doc is by far the best teacher at bsc.
He is soooo sexy, and teaches soooooo good. I will marry him some day.
He is the best teacher ever, I've had him so many times and hopefully will many more. I will miss him so bad when he goes on his sabbatical this fall. I really don't know what I'm gonna do without his class. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
Heretz has got to be one of the best teachers I've ever had the privilage to take a class with. Everything you need to know is made crystal clear. Great lectures, important info written on board, easy to take notes. Take Heretz whenever possible.
I Love Him! What a fabu professor! I never learned so much about World History in my life and I'm a history buff now! So much fun, such interesting/funny stories! He makes history come alive! So knowledgable! So cute! If he wasn't happily married... sexy.
He definitely is a good history teacher, but calling him sexy and hot is a serious stretch. His class teaches you a lot about the past, stuff that you should want to know! If your taking his class to see a hottie, look elsewhere.
His class was defenitely one of the more enjoyable GERs ive had to take. Quizzes are simple, essay questions are practically giftwrapped for you before the exams, and he knows how to teach with a lot of humor and skill. Take him!
The man is a genius. Anyone who gets less than a B in this class should be checked for mental stability. He also loves a good smoke.
This guy is so funny. Lectures the whole time but just being able to laugh at his random jokes are enough to make you want to come to class. you cover a lot of material but he is really clear about what you have to know. writes main points on board and those act as the study guide for tests.
take western civ since reformation with heretz. best option for your GER. take notes, pay attention, and you'll do fine. kind of cut/dry humor, but it works for him. may seem cold to some, but he gets to the point. throws out a lot of info, but it's all useful. quizzes, midterm, final are the grades
Very well educated and professional professor. I had him for four courses a few years ago.
Best History Teacher in the College. He makes it clear what you need to write, by putting the main points on the board before class. Only two major exams and two 5 page essays. He loves the topic, which makes you interested in it. He's funny and very intelligent. I highly recommend him to anyone History major or not. Take him you'll love the class
awesome teacher and very clear and interesting.. Oh did I mention he is cute too! Too bad he is married!
He has dry wit and is quite humorous. Take notes, pay attention, you will get and A, I did. And you may learn something. Though, he loves his camel cigarettes but don't we all.
Good professor, who presents the material in a clear and very organized fashion. Though he is a bit of a French kiss Butt ;-) . I enjoyed his class thoroughly.
Very knowledgeable, and articulate. He knows his subject material very very well
Very clear and knows the material by heart. I started bringing my laptop because it is a lot of notes. Quizzes (2 of them) were so easy. Tests: he gives you the essays in advance, you do 2 at home, bring an outline, and he drops one on the test. Would 100% recommend him for this GER. 3rd time taking W Civ, the other teachers were horrendous.
brilliant man and excellent teacher. He is very clear and willing to answer questions. Gives two fill-in-the-blank quizzes and lets you use outlines for the tests. He definitely makes history interesting
I did not like him at all he was boring and not funny at all. His quiz's where easy but wasnt an easy grader on the midterm or final. I wouldnt take him again.
I have taken 4 classes with professor Heretz because he is my favorite at BSC. He is by far the best teacher in the history dept. He's extremely knowledgeable, funny, helpful, and understanding. you'll learn a lot if you take him.
Very smart, but I found his final to be unreasonable
Probably the best professor in the entire history department at BSC. Friendly and conscientious he really cares about his students. Unlike some other professors in the department. The tests are really easy if you pay attention to the lectures and do the required reading.
He sucks! I tried so hard in his class. I had a 3.9 until I took his class. Listen-if your not a history major don't waste your time with this class.
This guy is classic! Straight forward lectures every class. He likes to crack random jokes that he gets a kick out of. Alot of studying for tests but you have all the notes you need. His final was a little out of control but other than that you will learn so much in his class and enjoy it too! Take him!
This man the the smartest man in the world. Doesn't even use his notes when he speaks, makes history actually interesting...i never liked history but im taking his class next semester because hes sooo amazing!!
He's a precious older guy.. knows everything there is to know about history and tries to make jokes (A for effort).. but the only way to stay awake is write everything he says down. If you can make it to class and stay awake you should be alright
One of the greatest professors who ever lived. His classes consist of him writing some terms on the board then just speaking for the rest of the class. He has 4 tests, 2 short answer which are disgustingly easy, they use the words he writes on the board, and a midterm and a final which are half short answer and 2 essay questions. TAKE HIM!
I have taken him for 2 classes now and this fall will be taking my 3rd upper-level history class with him. He is a great professor! Midterm and final with the words he puts on the board (a lot to study, but it's possible) and 2 papers which are fairly easy. I wish I could take all my remaining history courses with him!
Contrary to all the positive comments - I have found him to be a big disapointmnet. He acts bothered if you ask ANY question during his lecture. He talks down to the class. Wouldn't take him again because of his style. Be ready to take 20+ pages of notes from each lecture. Class is intense. No time for questions etc. It's pretty boring.
If you are a history major, you will love him. His knowledge is astounding and I have come to the conclusion that he is immortal. Best history professor i have ever had. Long live Leonid heretz
Leonid Heretz is the best professor I have ever had. He is also one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever met. He will most likely be remembered as being an expert on Ukranian/Russian history and by all those who have ever been graced to have known him. Loves French culture and cigarettes (please quit!!)
Amazing professor! Is of Ukranina heritage and extremely learned about Russian history and culture. He defines his terms with an overhead for every class. Take those terms down with the accompanying notes and STUDY!! I think he is extremely adorable!
He's a great guy, but I was a little disappointed with him after reading all these amazing posts. He's not bad, but there are definitely better teachers in the history department than him. It was an alright class, but I, personally, would probably try to avoid him in the future.
Without a doubt the best professor I've ever had. Took the subject matter seriously but also had many humorous anecdotes, like when his great uncle crashed a train into a station in Russia while he was ****. His course required study and extensive note-taking but everything you need to take down is there in front of you. Highest recommendation.
Professor Heretz is a very smart man with funny stories. He puts up about 10-20 definitions beginning of each class. memorize every one and the tests are ridiculously easy. Don't study them and you'll fail miserably. 2 quizes worth 30% , midterm 30%, essay 10%, final 30%. overall an easy class. willing to study a bit, take the class
This is strictly lecture and requires a great deal of your attention in and out of class. You need to keep up with readings and be sure to take notes on everything he says. He doesn't have time for questions or responds to emails so he isn't helpful. To pass you must focus which was my mistake, however he should be more clear and helpful
I'd recommend him, but only if you truly are interested in the subject. He's very smart, lectures only, and acts like he's harsher than he is. He'll scare you about tests, but read over your notes every day the week before and you'll do fine. You must pay attention. He offers extra credit. Not a class to slack off, but worth it if you're interested.
I honestly wouldn't take him, If you miss one class you're screwed!! because all he does is lecture and you have to write down everything, I mean EVERYTHING!!! His quizzes and tests are absloutley diffuclt because you have to be in love with the topic to understand , but he does offer extra credit , which is always good!! But if you like taking notes, I suppose you can take this class, but goodluck!
I thoroughly enjoyed professor Heretz for my western civilization class. His lecture are interesting and his knowledge on the subject is very extensive. If you show up for class pay attention and take decent notes there is no doubt you will pass this course with flying colors. Wish I could take him again.
Absolutely legendary, the best professor I have had in college at any point. The knowledge of this man is absolutely endless, and so are his stories. Dr. Heretz is truly the meaning of the word history, as he made this class awesome for all involved. I cannot recommend a professor any higher than this man, enjoy!
Dr. Heretz is easily the best professor in any department at BSU. His understanding of the field of history is unparalleled, and beyond that he is genuinely a kind-hearted and passionate individual. He is invested in his students success, and goes above and beyond in ensuring his students get the most of their educational experience.
great teacher. makes lectures interesting and throws in many funny personal stories. i learned more from him than probably any other history professor. strongly recommended if you want to get something out of your class
Best professor I've ever taken! If you truly love history, he's the guy you want to take. Very old-school. You really do have to pay attention in class, but thankfully his lectures are usually interesting. The few papers he assigns are short. If you do the reading on top of that, you will get an A. Sweetest guy in the department!
I had Professor Heretz for Western Civilization Since the Reformation and I learned so much! I have really disliked any history classes I have taken, however Heretz makes the lectures very interesting! Be prepared to take notes. He is a really good guy, seems strict, but just wants his students to do well. If you study you will do fine on tests.
I love Heretz! I took him for my French Rev./Napoleonic History class. He does tend to go fast in his lectures and they are long, but he is so nice. He tries to get the class active in discussion, he makes it clear what he is talking about. As long as you come to class and ask questions he is more than happy to explain and clarify any confusion.
His tone of voice is slightly boring, however he is really such a good guy. He really wants to see his students pass and is really lienent when it comes to passing in assignments. As long as you show up to class and put the effort in, you should be just fine. I definitely recommend him for any course.
This is a lecture-based class, but if you attend every class it is not hard to keep up. I really enjoyed it, he outlines the topic very well so that a very long time period can become understandable. A few papers, and I would review notes for the tests, but overall, this is a good elective to take.
Awesome Professor, I wish I could have taken more classes with. He taught about 20th Century Europe + he had so much family history he added to lectures, he made history come alive. He also had you bring in artifacts + present on them and how they related to the period. I took him for 2 courses, WW1 and 20th Century Europe.
Dr. Heretz is one of the gems of the history department. He is incredibly knowledgeable in his area and can tell you almost anything you want to know about Eastern Europe, especially Poland and Russia. He loves to tell stories of his family's experience in Ukraine and frequently asks questions. Very enjoyable class.
Dr. Heretz is one of the gems of the history department. He is incredibly knowledgeable in his area and can tell you almost anything you want to know about Eastern Europe, especially Poland and Russia. He loves to tell stories of his family's experience in Ukraine and frequently asks questions.
Prof. Heretz gives interesting lectures and tests that aren't very difficult as long as you show up and pay attention in class.
He makes this class enjoyable even if you are not a history major. He gives you good sense of what will be on the exam and quizzes. For some reason quizzes are harder than exams but if you put the time into this class you will do good! He does care about his students and wants them to do well. Will tell you how it is!
I highly recommend taking Professor Heretz. He makes history easier to follow by sticking to a number of key terms and points, and he's lenient on tests and quizzes. If you show up to class, you won't have any trouble. I found his background and items from the time periods we discussed in class to be interesting. You won't need the textbook.
If history is not your major this is a complete waste of time. He does not do a good job explaining the terms he expects you to know. He also does not give you any idea as to what is going to be on your test and quizzes. Worst class I've ever taken.
Heretz is a sweetheart, all he wants is for his students to pass. If you go to class and just listen and take good notes you will be fine! He lectures all class but its not horrible to sit through. There are two quizzes and a midterm/final, you need to study in order to get a good grade.
Wasn't sure I'd like him at first but ended up loving him. Lectures the entire class but I have yet to find it to be boring. This class is the first history class in my life that I actually found interesting. Has the most lowkey sense of humor it's awesome. Hope I can take him again. Would recommend!
he was a bit of an odd fella but the class was interesting! its completely a lecture, attendance doesnt technically count but just missing one class you miss a lot of info! only a couple graded assignments making them very important! definitely stressful class but overall I learned a lot, and he is a very understanding professor!
overall a really interesting teacher to listen to, he does do very short tests which leaves little room to pass if you get a question wrong, you probably dont need the books because his lectures are very detailed
I really enjoyed his class. As long as you show up to class hes a very easy teacher. Makes sure to review for tests and quizzes because he only gives 4, but he does give you an exta credit opportunity if you show up for the last 3 weeks of classes.
Professor Heretz is one of my favorite professors I've ever taken. Lecture heavy style but he keeps things interesting, and makes sure that people are engaged. Has such a vast knowledge of Russia, Poland, and European affairs in general. Has a nice subtle humor and cares about his students, I've taken him for two classes and plan to take more.
Great teacher and great class! Good lectures, and very knowledgeable of the subject. He is clearly passionate for history which makes the class that much better. Two quizzes, midterm, final, and an extra credit paper. Attendance is necessary, you can miss a lot in one class. I would and will take another class with him.
Dr. Heretz is the one of the best history professors at Bridgewater. Very lecture heavy classes but they are very interesting. Because the classes are lecture heavy, attendance is a must because you will miss a bulk of information. There is a midterm, final, and a paper. Super nice and quirky. 100% would recommend/ take again!
Dr. Heretz is a great professor. 3 super easy/informal presentations, 2 tests, a small assignment, and an essay -- that's it! Show up and pay attention in class, and you'll do just fine. He also offers extra credit. Read the Tocqueville book, but don't bother with the other 2. Don't be afraid to ask him to slow down or repeat important points.
One of the best in the dept. Ive taken 3 classes with him. he mainly lectures they are well organized. you can usally hand in work late he really only care about the content not when its turned in he is a fair grader and gives feedback. Only negative is hes not great with technology and he doesnt give consise info. on assignments but just ask him.
I am not sure how he has such a high rating, he doesn't give notes so you have to write down everything he says, if you miss a class you will actually miss about 3-5 pages of his speaking notes. Quizzes are harder than the midterm/final. He is a reasonable grader and a funny and nice guy but his class isn't worth it unless you're a history major.
I can't say enough good things about this guy. Lectures are easy to follow, puts all of the terms up on the board and makes it simple to follow along. Couple of paper assignments and you have to present your topic, but nothing ridiculous. Extremely nice guy who is sometimes hilarious. Ask him to tell the class about his Uncle Ivan.
To say this man is technologically challenged would be an understatement. We switched platforms three times mid-semester. He just sits in front of his webcam and talks for the whole 1:15. Didn't emphasize topics to help students discern what is useful vs. what isn't. Therefore, his approach is extremely problematic. Worst history professor there.
I don't understand why his rating is so high. The entire course is just him lecturing. No PowerPoint or visuals, he just rambles with no clear direction or organization. It's super difficult to follow along and discern what's important and what's not. If you're not an auditory learner and don't want an old-school type education, do not take him.
Dr. Heretz is by far the best professor I've had at BSU. His lectures are super interesting because he's so passionate about what he's teaching. I honestly never zoned out in his classes because his lectures are very engaging and funny. He shares a lot of stories from his own studies and from his family background. Awesome guy all around
Horrible with communication, don't expect a reply email. Will deduct points from assignments for miniscule things that simply aren't to his liking. Online class with him was a struggle due to his lack of knowledge regarding all technology; he once asked the class what the "red squiggly lines" mean in a Word doc. Far from a good professor, avoid him
Professor Heretz makes the subject interesting and easy to consume in large quantities. Learned an enormous amount about the Soviets and how to think. A bit more detail about his expectations for assignments would be good, but just ask. The comments about technology are unfair. Please!!! No one can be an instant expert on everything. A+ professor.
Amazing history professor, maybe the best at BSU. I've had him for 2 classes so far and both times were great. His lectures are very interesting. If you are a history major I 100% recommend him, especially his USSR class. He isn't a hard grader at all as long as you put in effort. I found him easy to contact but maybe this depends on the class.
Professor Heretz is by far the best professor I have had at BSU. Despite the class consisting of mainly lectures, he keeps them entertaining by incorporating his personal stories and sense of humor. I would recommend anyone who has a chance, to take a class with Heretz. If you show up, take decent notes, and study you will do well. Love this guy!
Overall the class was fine. If you learn better with a powerpoint during a lecture don't take this class. He gives no visuals and talks the entire time. The only thing you have to use to study is whatever notes you take in class. not very engaging but not a hard class. Don't buy the textbook I haven't used it once this entire semester.
A wonderful professor. Vast knowledge about the subject and history in general. A variety of interesting assignments, all designed to promote engagement with the subject. Lectures that are awesome. Difficult to find a better professor at BSU or anywhere else. Expects that you also do some work. How can you learn otherwise?
I was not fond of the textbooks
Class consists of him lecturing the entire time with only a sheet of paper on the board filled with terms. Graded on 2 quizzes, midterm, final, and 2 small projects. The quizzes are fill-in answers and you either know it or dont each quiz can consist of you having to know 100-150 different terms. Prob dont take if not a history major.
Professor Heretz is an interesting person and a great lecturer if you are a history nerd. His lectures are very dense, which could be intimidating if you are not into the material. Not a difficult class at all, but you will learn a ton. Just keep up with your weekly journal and pay attention for exams. Would also recommend his amazing USSR class.
He is a nice guy and very clearly passionate about what he teaches. 50% of your grade is participation and the other part is divided between two presentation/essay projects and your final. The assignments are only difficult because he gives you no rubric whatsoever and he is not very clear and concise on what he wants from you.
Not tech savvy. No clear guidelines for what he expects in projects and essays. Really nice guy and clearly very intelligent, but its sometimes hard to follow along. He is hard to get a hold of outside of class. 50% of your grade is based on participation, so as long as you show up and do the few homework assignments you won't fail.
Show up, take notes and you're good. He knows this course is a core for many so he made it as easy as it can be. The only way to do badly is to do nothing. 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, and 1 final. He was very nice and knowledgeable. No homework, no essays, and some extra credit opportunities. Try to pay attention then you'll get an A.
Could not love Heretz more. He's clearly very passionate about what he teaches classes on. He assigned very easy and straight forward projects and papers and let us have free range on what we chose as our topics as long as it related to the class content. Jump at the chance to take a class with him.
really nice guy, and the class is easy however the way he structures his classes need some work, i wish it wasn't just a bunch of terms on the board that you have to take notes on by just listening to what he says. it can be very difficult to learn that way. if he changed that aspect of the class i would be eager to take him again
Exceptionally competent professor: class time consists of thorough lectures and note taking. He covers a lot per-class, but keeps things cohesive. Has a tendency to go on humorous tangents, giving stories about his relatives as well as colorful people he has met, such as a former warlord from the Russian Civil War, and so on. Outstanding professor.
Dr. Heretz never ceases to make history fun. The whole class is lecture, and he may seem intimidating, but he is incredibly kind and funny. His stories are great, the way he teaches is tried and true, and the essays are easy so long as you study. I can not recommend him enough.
Straightforward class - just show up, take notes, and you're set. Professor is nice, though lectures can be dry. Using Unstuck AI and the free textbook are good ways to prep.
I adore Heretz. He might be difficult to get in the groove with in a 100 or 200 level course but if you're a history major and really into history, you can't get better than him. Take him for any class about WWI or Eastern Europe/Russia as it's his specialty. He's got super dry humor that makes lectures so fun.
Older-school style of lecturing, but in the best ways. Dry wit, extremely intelligent. For papers, he will respect you if you put the hard work in and produce something you actually care about and take time to edit/cite correctly. Took 3 classes with him, every single one is among the top 10 classes I've taken at BSU, and I have two majors.
This professor would point me and a couple others out individually in class and make a rude comment like "take your notes so you can maybe pass your quiz and final" in a snarky voice and just isn't a very welcoming person to begin with. I don't recommend unless your a history major and you pay attention and take a lot of notes.
50% participation, 50% 2 papers. You practice for your papers with (ungraded) presentations where Dr. Heretz gives great feedback. Paper expectations can be vague, but they are fine if you put in effort, ask questions, and take Dr. Heretz's feedback. Quick/fair grader. Has a dry sense of humor and very funny personal stories. Strongly recommend!
While the lectures can be boring at times Heretz does a good job of explaining information and making it entertaining. He usually tells you when something will be on the test but if you follow along and take notes you'll be fine. Not to mention doing the oral history and extra credit makes it nearly impossible to fail. Tough class but not that bad.
There's not a single person alive that's like Dr. Heretz. He loves to lecture but he sprinkles in a lot of stories and jokes that lighten it up a bit. He assigns a lot of reading but if you pay attention to the lectures you should be okay. His exams are kinda tough, but they're not impossible.
I took Dr. Heretz for HIST 496, and this class was by far my favorite at BSU. Heretz is an amazing professor who loves discussions and is caring. This class was a LOT of reading...but it is a capstone so that was expected. Fair and quick grader. My only regret is not taking him more than once during my time at BSU.
