Heavy accent, hard to understand, hard class. Don't take this class.
I took his class last year, he is a REALLY good teacher, very thorough in his explanations. HE does have an accent, but it is nothing to whine about. Just do the homework he RARELY leaves, and show up for his notes. Very good notes, so don't miss class and you'll be fine
Has a thick accent, but I didn't really notice and actually paid more attention because of it. Relatively simple curriculum, straightforward tests. Funny when he wants to be, usually pretty by-the-books, which is just fine. Friendly. Probably won't manage to stay fully awake in a night class with him, but night classes make you drowsy anyway.
Very easy teacher. Only need to turn in homework assignments when there's a test so 4.. and gives you a week to do it. Has a heavy accent but you get use to it. Gives really good notes. Answers questions and tries diffrent ways to clarify if students dont understand. Very sweet guy!!
Mr. Piterbarg is a really nice teacher. He's very calm and takes his time to explain. He's probably the easiest and clearest math teacher one could ask for. Great teach!
This professor is not only brilliant but he's precise and teaches at a comfortable level. He's calm and easy to learn from.
he's not good for 5b.maybe cuz this is his 1st time teaching 5b.he made a lot of mistakes in class, once he did 8wrong problems out of 10.but his hw is perfect.only 30problems for every test, and due before test.but he doesnt have time for review,he barely finished lecture on the last lecture before final
Very challenging teacher. Definitely NOT an easy A class as it requires a lot of work. Come prepared. Clear lectures, but the work and the tests are hard! May lower your GPA and chances to transfer.
Very nice man. Understanding and pretty compassionate if you show up and pay attention in class; also, big plus if you tactfully correct his arithmetic errors. 4 regular tests plus a final. Reviews what's on the tests (and final) before it's given. Grades on a pretty generous curve.
Not Recommended! He is hard to understand, he makes lots of mistakes, he doesn't help students who are struggling, he doesn't interact with the class, he is emotionless and lectures like a robot. Only positives: only 4 tests and 1 final. Only 4 homework assignments. He grades on a Curve. You can leave class after the break and he doesn't care.
He lectures like a robot. He makes a lot of mistakes. 4 homeworks, 4 tests, and 1 final. the lowest one drop. However, for every test, he tend to put something that we never learn before. Don't take him if you never learn precal before.
The negative comments are TOTALLY wrong, this guy knows his stuff and his tests are SO easy. Ive compared chapter exams from his class and other teachers of the same and his stuff is SO basic, just testing to see if you get the concept. Ppl who say hes not helpful are the ones who don't bother to ASK FOR HELP duh hes not just gonna know whos lost!
His mistakes are like writing 11 instead of 9. I even love that since I have to follow him carefully and verify each step. What is really helpful he teaches CONCEPTS and mathematical thinking. He is great.
Honestly, Mr Piterbarg is a fantastic professor who helps students understand the concepts and gives the students every oppotunity to pass his class. In his summer class, his tests were curved, and he also gave partial credit. I owe this man a lot of gratitude for helping me move onto the next level of math.
He's great. FREE A and CLEARLY UNDERSTANDABLE although Calculus is super hard. He is instrutor in USC, too (just saying how great he is). He is clear and good at teaching. I know many people just lazy and walked out of class because attendance is not mandated. But they're wrong, they should have self-discipline. You're in college, not HS anymore.
He's very good at teaching. Take him. You will know a lot of stuff. I can't even imagine that I can come to every of his class starting at 7 A.M because it's just so interesting and great!
first 1 hour he was hard to understand because of his accent, after a while he's easy to understand. he drops lowest score. all his test a department test which are super easy! and lastly He has old man swag! lol
Very very easy teacher. You can get an a easy. Some very bad mistakes in class but he wants you to correct him if you saw any misatake.
I can't understand a word he's saying. If you turn in homework don't expect to get it back or know your grade. Relies heavily on textbook, reading it the night before means you don't need to attend class. The textbook was more clear than his lectures. Otherwise, he's very nice and attempts to help. Take him if you're talented at math. Good luck.
Good teacher! Fair grading, partial credit is given even if you just started a solution correctly. Blame yourself if you got a grade below your expectations! He is closely following the textbook. So you can easily catch up after missing a class.
I recommend this teacher to everybody because he explains every single step in problem solving. Grading is very fair and he gave us a training exam before the final. It was really helpful, huh!
He has a very heavy accent and really knows how to confuse you, try's to be helpful but only makes it more confusing, most questions on the exam are things he never went over in class avoid him if you can.
Easy class just show up and take notes and you should get an A, very helpful
Professor Piterbarg was really helpful, especially when he saw how hard I was trying. He is hard at first, but once the class settles in he is open to discussion and going over things if you don't understand.
Professor Piterbarg is a math genius solving any problem from scratch and answering any question. But sometimes he's not able to explain solutions clearly. Anyway I learned more from him than from the book.
if you understand math he's fine. if you expect to be taught, do not take him. he is a walking text book. be prepared to tech yourself.
Prof Piterbarg jumped in to teach our class when our original professor did not show up on day 1. He is very nice and explains the material very well. He does not assign a lot of work and his exams follow the learnings to a T. He will allow cheat sheets, technology and tables for the exams. The class is not hard - just follow his notes.
He is a fair teacher, but he doesn't quite know how to communicate better with the students. His teaching is excellent and not bad at all, but he doesn't know how to get students motivated. My warning to yall is that if you're taking him, you have to be prepared to study all by yourself. Self study and allowed cheat sheets are the ways to get an A.
I'm taing his 5B. Honestly, his teaching is useless. I go to every class and i try so so hard to listen his classes but always end up confused. It's better just learn on your own. Dont take him if you are excepting to be taught. I wont take him next time unless i have no choices!
Professor Piterbarg is great--lectures are quite clear and on point. I would recommend this course to anyone thinking of taking it.
The most boring professor ever!! Math is a very fun and interesting subject, but he makes it miserable. I knew all the material prior to taking his 5C class, but I was so bored that I took another math material to study on my own. He doesn't allow any of the students participate whatsoever. Student participation is zeroooo. It's a waste of time.
The lecture is rough but he uses the book as a reference which helps get the key points across. There is a slight language barrier but if you take the time to get used to it its not so bad. Overall a good professor.
To me, his lecture is like other teachers. But his tests are difficult! A few people can get As.Some of the test problems are really hard. Sometimes the answers are weird. They require intelligence and flukes.I like tricky problems but not in the tests. And I never got the feedback from the homework. I'm not sure if it only happens in summer.
His lectures are clear and literally come straight from the book. He is one of the most brilliant mathematicians I've met, but is subsequently not a very great teacher. His lectures OR his assigned homework do NOT prepare you for the advanced problems in the test. I took him over a fast-paced 6 week summer course, so your experience may vary.
Mr. Leonid is pretty good, but he does have an accent which makes his lectures a little hard to understand. He taught us well, since I remembered most of it even after the summer.
I had a very strong background in calculus before taking him so his class was easy to me. Literally follows the textbook on each lesson. LIke all math classes if you do all the hw and apply yourself you should get an A. Gives a lot of partial credit, Lectures are pretty dry, I was on my phone a lot to kill time. Got an A in his class.
This summer Ive taken his Calculus 3. Though I tried it before I learned a lot of new things. Easy to follow lectures because he makes a lot of graphics and asks students to participate. Training tests with possibility of extra credit are of real help. Worst test is dropped. Fair grading. In general Mr. Piterbarg is a good professor.
Prof Piterbarg follows the book strictly. He's very intelligent; however, if you take him you need to make time for studying unless you don't need help w/math. He needs to improve his teaching method to connect more w/students. Though & fast grader. Very few homework graded. You need to be patient with his age. I learnt from him. Recommended.
He's a great teacher. Lectures are clear. English isn't his 1st language, but he will do his best to help out. assigns homework, but only collects some of them(he will tell which ones are to be collected). Every test has an extra credit question, participation earns credit. He will always give partial credit on test problems, as long as attempted
Great professor. gives partial credit on tests. always an extra credit question on tests. likes to help out, EVEN DURING BREAKS. assigns homework, but only grades a couple of those. Will take him again!
He was a substitute for our 131 course while our teach was ill and the entire class loved him! He is extremely clear and makes math almost seem easy. I will definitely try to take a stats course with him next semester. Excellent teacher.
Toughest professor ever had. HW but not graded, No EC, No quizes. Only tests and lectures. Attend lecture, go home review it study for test. That's all the class was about.
Professor Piterbarg drops the lowest exam and grades very few homework. If you work, the homework fact is good unless you need to practice exercises to keep up. His lessons are clear and he gives extra credit. His exams are very difficult even with cheat sheets allowed. Very knowledgeable of the subject. Overall recommended.
Incredibly boring instructor. Often makes mistakes on examples, and the fact that he integrates absolutely no class participation within lectures doesn't help. Student beware: if you ever find the audacity to pull out your phone or God forbid - fall asleep in this clumsy and lifeless class, then say goodbye to your chance at a satisfactory grade.
His accent was a struggle at first, you can ask him to repeat himself. He is a helpful man you can ask questions and he will answer them. I recommend going into office hours he is willing to explain a concept again to you. If I asked questions sooner I would have received an A. Is he boring? Umm he's monotone. STUDY ALL EXAMPLES AND PAST EXAMS.
One of the best easy and clear. Will take again.
Heavy accent, can't understand what he's talking about sometimes. He won't gives u partial credit on the test. Just one sign wrong u got 0 on this problem. don't know what is his grading standard. Won't tell u what grade r u receive until the very end. Didn't post your grade online. Terrible professor! Won't take him again. Try to avoid him!
By far, the worst teacher I've ever had in my education career. Making simple mistakes will drop your grade from an A to a B. Does not give partial credit. Very unfair and does not talk about why you got a certain grade. He is very bad at lectures. You'll self learn because he can't teach. If you take him, you better be perfect.
Just took his final. I have a 90% test average. Test are 60%. homework is 10%. Final is 30%. Final is super hard. Most of the class, if not all, failed the final. Now I am worried if I will pass the class or not. He gives poor lectures, be prepared to self study. I recommend you drop or take a new teacher. He barely gives partial credit.
A great professor. His training exams are close to real ones and are extremely helpful. generous grading, a lot of partial credit. Very knowledegable.
Yeah, final was hard and frankly I screwed up. But it was curved and I got A! Prof. Piterbarg is very knowledgeable and you can learn from him much beyond the book. Recommended.
This Professor is very knowledgeable in terms of this subject. He rarely makes mistakes and hands back the test the next day. He teaches exactly from the book. He is very organized. His tests are really easy and very simple. As for the final, its bound to cover lots of topics so try to remember as much as possible. Tests and Final is worth 90%
When half of your students do not understand the concept after the 2nd week of class, you got a major problem. Most lectures end up very difficult to understand due to his vagueness in going through the concept. Half of my reason in understanding the assignments and exams is when I constantly use youtube as a resource. Good luck...
I'm taking calculus after quite a break. I like professor Piterbarg because he goes over algebra and trig involved. Always ready to explain things after the class. Sadly, no office hours and free tutoring during the Winter intersession. A good professor, I'd take him again.
He is a great teacher, very clear and precise. What ever he lectures on in class is what is on the test, there are no surprises. If you pay attention in lecture and do the homework, there is no reason you should not get an A. If you have a question, he will stay after and explain the concept to you which is great and hard to come by.
PROS: accent (:, drops lowest test, extra credit, will help if you do not understand material, nice, not much hmwk, grades pretty quick, goes over test questions CONS: accent -. -, doesn't explain material too well, no O. H., boring lectures
Piterbarg is a good professor who will cover what is required in a straight forward way. However, to people who are used to proficient English speaking professors, you might have a hard time but after a few lectures you should be able to understand. Overall good professor and not too hard. Do ALL the homework and you will pass all his tests.
One of the best teachers I ever had. Clear explanations, quick and fair grading. Worst test score is dropped. Volume of HW is reasonable. Little extra credit is suggested.
He pretty much only lectures. He will answer questions before, during, and after class. If you do not understand do not expect him to reach out to you. If you approach him about it he will help you understand. You really gotta ask questions mannnnnnn. Class is hard dude. Math sucks. Very much so a meat and potatoes professor.
All he does is lecture and its so boring. He also doesn't teach well, you have a better chance of teaching yourself than learning from him. His tests are very hard, 100% is a far away dream. Half the class cheats which means the "curve" he offers is pitiful. His final is harder than any of his previous tests for no reason. Just take someone else
Take someone else is all I can say. His tests have nothing to do with the homework he assigns you. His finals come out of left field. Everyone cheats so there is no curve to hope for. Take anyone else, anyone. This guy doesn't know how to teach Math 10, he just piggy backs off of Socrate's already horrible study material. Don't take this.
Multivariable Calculus is a hard nut and I was already familiar with it, but learned a lot of new things from Prof. Piterbarg concerning with applications to physics. If you want to succeed go over and over your practice tests which are very similar to real ones. He allows for notes on final that helped me a lot.
This professor gives a clear understanding on the subject. He takes his time to explain it, and does not rush through it. Tests are not easy, but do not go beyond topics covered by homework. Partial credit is given if you just started a correct way of solution.
Prof. Piterbarg is a good teacher, however there are some people who may have a hard time understanding because of his accent. He has lecture the first half of class and classwork at the end, which truly helps students because students get to experience first hand the things that theyve learned and perfect their skills. Dont use your phone, trust
I really appreciate this teacher. Very straightforward and fair, there is no mystery as to what the student needs to do well in his class. He is very knowledgeable in the subject. Hope to take him again in the future.
He's a pretty cool dude.
This professor is awesome. Ready to help anytime staying for a while even after the class. Fair grading with plenty of partial credit. Most surprising he lectures not looking in notes at all with almost no mistakes.
Took Professor Piterbarg for summer 2018, and I was a bit nervous because I'm not that strong in math, especially when I took calc 1 year ago in high school. There is a lot of homework problems, and he does grade them. However, when you take this class, you will realize how caring of a professor he is :) just take him and find out!!
Lectures were mostly me watching a man solve his own math problems. He will vocalize what he's doing, but with no explanation as to why he's doing that. Very monotone & he sometimes smelled bad. I would go home & watch Youtube videos to do the HW & save my grade. He was a last resort when all other teachers had full classes.
I have taken his multivariable calculus this summer and even though was familiar with material got a lot of new insights. The professor always underscored differences with one variable calculus what was really helpful. The final was essentially harder than regular tests and I was worried about my grade much, but eventually he curved and I got A.
A good professor. Suggests a practice test before every real one with very similar problems and discuss solutions before. That really helps. Be careful with your phone - he hates seeing it on your desk during classes.
This professor is the worst. Terrible guy and terrible professor. Gets mad at students for not understanding the material and already expects you to understand the chapters. His lectures are so bad. He mumbles and for 2 hours it's just watching him trying to solve his own problems. Lecture doesn't make any sense at all and is all over the place.
I do not recommend this professor at all. The beginning of the semester there were like 30 people in class but in the end, there were only 15 left. Because of his heavy accent, I didn't understand a thing. An hour and a half of lecture was a pain. No conversation with classmates. Boring. Made me not like math anymore. You'll fall asleep trust me.
This professor is quite good, his test was based on his review, for me it was quite easy. However, his final was really hard but he usually gives a practice test before the final. Then, there are curving in his class he requires 25 of his class an A so do not worry about your grade as long as you work hard
Be prepared that the Final Exam could be super hard!Although I worked so hard that I managed to get all As on all the other exams and did all the homework, I was eventually dropped down to B because of the Final. Pretty sad. Its like all the hard work failed to pay off.I might be happier if all the exams are hard, then I could lose my hope of getti
You have to pay attention in class to pass, but if you do, he gives very good proofs& examples and explains the material well.
A nice professor. Easy to get A, just do all HW and learn from practice tests. Real tests are almost exact copies of them. Be careful with your phone, using phones makes him furious and may affect your grade.
He is a good professor. He gives extra credit: practice tests and extra credit homework. The practice tests are a good reflection of what will be on the real test, and you get extra credit for doing it. Also, if you can do and understand the homework, you should be ok. If you want extra practice, do the extra homework. You'll get an A if you study.
Prof Piterbarg is an excellent professor. His lectures are very clear, and he always stays after class to answer questions. He gives classwork, which is very helpful. Also, the test problems are very similar to the homework. He also gives a practice test before each test, which he makes extra credit, and it is very representative of the real test.
Planning to take Piterbarg? Get ready for hours and hours of PowerPoint hell. His speech is difficult to understand due to his heavy accent and quiet speaking voice. The tests do not draw from most of the homework material, and his demeanor when answering questions is often curt and annoyed.
Probably the easiest Calculus class youll ever take, if youre a competent math student. A ton of extra credit, drops your lowest test, an A is 85%, allows cheat sheet during exams. Tests are fair, and homework isnt very long. Professor knows his stuff, but dont expect him to be overly personable.
This is a professor who doesn't care if you pass or fail, that should be enough for you know how he teaches. He was annoyed when students ask him questions. Students corrected him at least 3 times each lecture and not on computations but the concept of the material. It just seems like he hates teaching, I don't know why he's a professor. It's sad.
Took him for Summer Math 5B (Calculus II) and let me just say he is the WORST professor you can take. Does not drop the lowest test score, and his lectures are the most boring lectures on this planet. Save yourself the headache and go with someone else.
So far: Cons: - He doesn't drop the lowest test score - He has a heavy accent and so it's hard to understand his pre-recorded lectures - A LOT of HW (LIKE A LOT and they're only worth 3pts...) Pros: - Offers up to 6% extra credit - Practice Tests are a good reflection of his exams - Provides outside resources (links) to help with the learning
One of the worst professors I've ever had the displeasure of taking. Does NOT drop the lowest test score, his test grading feedback is only "lack of explanations" while his answer keys have no explanations AT ALL. Gives tons of HW, that is only worth 3 points. Does not answer e-mails, and completely ignores students. STAY AWAY!!!!
Do not take this professor unless you want to destroy your GPA. He does NOT drop the lowest test score, completely ignores emails, and is impossible to understand due to this thick accent. Please do yourself a favor and avoid him. The amount of homework he gives is ok, but tests have things that aren't even covered in the HW. Avoid!!
Not the worst professor I've taken, but also not the best. Gives a manageable amount of homework, however be aware that some questions on the tests aren't covered in the HW at all. His grading feedback on tests is useless as well. I ended up having to basically teach myself through youtube because his lectures will put you to sleep.
Taking this class was a nightmare. He gives a lot of homework and he doesn't teach well. I had to rely on youtube videos to learn the material. Also, he doesn't give good feedback on the exams. He just writes "Major/Minor Mistakes #1, ..." and like that's it!! How am I supposed to know why I got the questions wrong?
What a Gem! I don't know why he has bad reviews, he is the sweetest professor that cares about his students. It's Calc 2, not high school algebra you have to work for the grade it's tough. Don't expect these classes to be easy. He makes everything manageable and offers extra credit, drops the lowest test score. He does everything for his students!
Was a difficult professor that did not teach well. Only 3 students were left in his class by the end of the term since his tests were insanely difficult compared to anything on homework/classwork/study guides. Take him if you want an easy way to lower your GPA.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Doesn't enjoy teaching, assigns a ridiculous amount of homework, and doesn't explain anything well at all. Save your time, money, and GPA and pick a different professor.
He DOES NOT TEACH. He only showed us, in class, classic questions that NEVER appear on the test. Did not cover a WHOLE LOT of scenarios. HW did, but we were NEVER told of the proper approach and work that need ot be shown. AND HE IS PICKY ABOUT SHOWING WORK ON TESTS ON QUESTIONS HE DID NOT SHOW NOR TOUCH A SINGLE TIME with his "incredible" accent.
Worst prof I've ever had. doesn't care about his students at all. literally teaches to the whiteboard. nobody was able to ask a qst the entire class bc he never even turns around. lectures are so difficult to follow and understand. I only got an A because I self studied everything. doesn't respond to emails. over half the class dropped by the end.
Is you are looking for a linear algebra teacher who teaches you practical math don't take this class. If you want someone who will attempt to teach theoretical mathematicals with plenty of proofs take this class.
Made this account just to say this. Horrible with grading, doesn't let you retake tests and is very picky with partial points. Assigns loads of homework problems for very little points. Will not work with you whatsoever, you will be teaching yourself.
Just don't take this class if you want to get a good GPA. This professor is soooo bad and wants students to fail. I am not even kidding. He does not give partial credit. So even if my answers are right, he makes up any excuse to mark me down. If taken with another professor, I would have gotten an A, but I could not deal with this professor.
Piterbarg is awesome professor. Tests never go beyond class materials and homework. Moreover, real exams are almost exact copies of pretests discussed in the class. Generous extra credits are offered for class activity and extra HW.
The class wasn't easy, but it wasn't too hard. These reviews are from incels who don't put in any effort. This professor teaches at USC, so expect some difficult grading standards. It is pretty easy to get an A as long as you put in the effort. He also prepares you for advanced math classes. Thanks to him, I was able to smoke through Calc 3.
The people who can't handle his class belong in CC. If you want to transfer to selective institutions, take him. Took his 5A and 5C. Regret not taking his 10 and 5b. His lectures are kinda boring, not the best to learn from. However, you can learn by observing him do math. Hes very talented. It's as if ur getting taught by a noble prize winner lmao
Truly the worst professor I have had. I am not a math person and well aware of that. I struggled through the whole class despite having help from tutors and constantly studying. He is an incredibly hard grader and doesnt give feedback. He teaches to the board and its hard to hear him since he mutters a lot. i was studying always and barely passed.
I was pretty confident on math. Have finished linear algebra, and all other calculus stuffs. His class basically put you to extreme condition. If you have a lot of time and want to investigate on math, (15-20 hours+ per week) take him. If you don't have 15 hours to spend outside of class, don't take his class.
Coming from a student who is good at math, having completed all math courses with an A. This professor is awful. I understand bad professors to a certain level, but he is extremely bad. Bad at teaching, hard grader, does not care about students, etc. The average for each exam and quiz was a fail. SO don't even bother taking this professor.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A GOOD GPA. HE IS SO BAD LIKE REALLY BAD.
He answers questions and posts schedules for guidance and study guides, but you won't learn much in class due to his accent and mumbling. Have to ask an infinite number of questions to understand him. I sat at the front of the class and couldn't hear him clearly. He isn't careless, but communication in class is crucial and that's where he lacks.
Inaccessible unless on day of exam or for 10 minutes after class. Disorganized lessons with way too much information, hard to understand what he's saying, making an already difficult subject unnecessarily frustrating. Very tough grader, offers no curve either. Struggled through this class due to his cold nature and lack of care for students.
This class was a challenge, but using Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me stay on top of the material. The lectures can be tough to follow, so be prepared to put in the effort. Still, Professor Piterbarg prepares you well for advanced math courses.
This guy was my sub for 2 weeks. Normally I wouldn't give a sub a review but this guy is that bad. He is difficult to understand and only cares about getting through the lecture rather than us learning. You are better off self studying this class than having him as a teacher. Not only will taking this class tank your gpa but it's a waste of time.
Professor Leonid transformed the way I view mathematics. I am now on the level of Nikola Tesla and Albert Einstein. I woke up the morning, and realized I accidently proved the Wronskian while brushing my teeth. Thanks Leo! You da goat
Took professor leo way back in 1943. Invited him to my wedding and he stole my bride! What a player. Coolest man on earth.
Fought with Leonid back in the Russian revolution. Now he's my professor!
Bro teleported straight out of a 1970s Soviet math lab and started speaking in pure linear algebra. I think he proved 12 theorems before anyone found their notes. Respectfully, I understood nothing.
