He is a really really good teacher. You learn a lot. He tests, however, are really really hard and he has no mercy!! He doesn't grade on the curve. If you want to learn chemistry take from him, its a lot of work but he is really clear and he teaches good.
Very clear teacher, and is willing to help you anytime. He'll answer ANY question you have. amusing, laughs, but seriously gets the work done. no curve, you get what you get. if you have NO chemistry knowledge, then you will suffer. its best to have some idea what he is teaching, so do the reading.
I had 3 hours of tutoring a week outside of class. He would read the poweropints to us and gave limited practical application. I can read powerpoints myself - teach me instead! I have completed over 200 credits & have a B+ avg. incl grad school and I know what a good teacher is and he is not it. All he wants to do is research, not teach.
He won't answer any question straight, he's condescending and rude.
Brother Manner may be hard, but you learn a lot. You learn that chemistry isn't just about blowing up things, but explains the world around us. He is very kind and will patiently explain everything to you. Though you must study for the tests, he does not use a curve and he has no mercy. Though overall he is a great teacher.
Brother Manner is an awesome guy. He is funny and is always willing to help. His tests are really hard. The class average is usually pretty low. I put it as him just being to smart to teach.I think he is brilliant. If you like a challenge you will love him but prepare yourself. All in all brother manner is nice but super hard to get above a C.
I worked like crazy in his class. His tests are very hard. He can help you if you ask him but it is hard to know what you need help with before the test. It is a really hard class I wouldn't really recommend him.
Of the several chemistry teachers I've had, I like Bro. Manner the most. The only time he was ever unclear is when some student asked a complete off-the-wall question that didn't apply to the topic we were discussing. I learned a TON from his class and still enjoyed myself. I think that I laughed more in that class than in all others combined
Bro Manner is awesome! He is very knowledgeable and is totally willing to help. He provides his own examples and ones in the book to help you understand. There are 4 exams and about 5-6 quizzes throughout the semester. There is a daily 1 question review quiz also used for attendance. I would HIGHLY recommend him!
I am in his class right now and am struggeling to adjust to his teaching style. He reads a power point, does 1 example, answers some questions in a way nobody can understand then movies on. So you pretty much have to learn Chemistry on your own. I would not reccomend him, there are better teachers at this school. He doesnt have good people skills!
Awesome professor! Do you have to work? Yes. But we are in college, not highschool. If you want a good grade you have to work for it. He is extremely willing to help. He changed his teaching style this semester and it is working wonderfully. I've talked to many other people in Chem 105 and for sure he is the best. TAKE HIM!!!
I came into Chemistry hating it and dreading it and it actually turned out to be a pretty fun class, not because chemistry is oh so exciting but because Bro. Manner makes it so. he encourages group work and enables you to get to know people and talk it out. I loved taking this class from him!!
Brother Manner is easy to get along with and talk to. He is willing to help and has a good enthusatic attitude about chemistry. He makes the class fun. You can tell he loves teaching and you can tell he is excited about it and he makes you excited about it too. And he's hot.
Brother Manner is a great lecturer and shows great enthusiasm for his class. I enjoyed his lectures and teaching style I learned a lot in his class. He does have tough quizzes and exams. I recommend going to the tutor or spend extra time studying his slides that he has you print out before class and try not to miss class if
Bro. Manner is a good teacher- if you understand chem already. He goes through everything as though it were review, so if you've never had chem before, don't take him. If you do understand chem already, he's a great teacher, but the homework is useless. You can just BS it for the most part. I recommend him, but only if you have had chem already.
I greatly recommend Brother Manner! He has an amazing teaching style that really helps you to internalize the concepts. He also has a fun sense of humor, which is always a plus when learning Chemistry.
Each class period was based around the idea of breaking students in assigned groups of 4 and then having then working on a worksheet/activity that he prepares. He never lectures. If you are smart and self-taught I would recommend taking his class...otherwise beware. He does not curve final grades more than 1% so don't believe the rumor that he does
The guy is clueless when it comes to teaching, because he doesnt teach at all.The weight of tests, quizes and homework is screwed up. If you dont get the quizzes real well but ace the test you still do poorly in the class. He is awkward, and actually makes comments that are not professional, borderline inappropriate.
I got a 5 on the AP Chemistry test, but this class killed me! Sometimes the people in your group will put in the wrong answers for your worksheets this will greatly affect your grade. He doesn't answer your questions very well either. Careful, you can ace the test but do horrible on the group worksheets. Don't take him!
He doesn't help students at all. I usually don't give teachers bad reviews on this site but I asked him several times for help and he told me to ask my group members. The problem was, my group members were failing the class
Bro Manner really does care about his students. He just doesn't care for their whining. He doesn't teach at all so if you don't understand try and look up the answer. We secretly kept the book with us in class so we could look up what we had to know. If you have to take him read the chapter the night before, I know its nerdy, but it'll seriously hel
I really enjoyed his way of teaching. It made the whole class involved and really helped me to learn from my peers.
I love the way he conducts class. Many people don't like it because he doesn't lecture, but I think it's better. You definitely can't fall asleep in his class. His teaching style makes you think, but it also makes concepts more concrete. He is so nice too! He is always willing to help. But like with all classes, you have put in the effort too.
Chemistry is a very hard class and Bro Manner conducts his class in a weird way. He doesnt teach the class at all. You bring an activity to class everyday and the students teach themselves. It wasn't my preferred way of teaching, but I did learn a lot. This class is pretty tough!
If you work well in groups, take Bro Manner. If you like working on your own, avoid his classes at all cost. The entire class is group-work. I didn't mind the class all that much, because I really enjoy chemistry. I didn't like my group that much, because they didn't try that hard, and I had to carry them.
Bro Manner is funny and really cares about his students, but I had a very difficult time being successful in his class. If you are self motivated, take his class! His teaching requires a LOT of personal study.
Exams are not multiple choice which I hated. You work in groups which I found super helpful. He likes you to figure things out in your groups instead of asking him.
Not very helpful, almost seems offended by questions. You may as well take it online.
I loved Brother Manners class. You work in groups the whole semester which I found really helpful. The tests were fine as long as you payed attention in class and reviewed for a bit before the test. I greatly suggest him!
All of the classroom learning is done with group work. It is very interactive and and you learn by doing. If you dont understand homework go to his office and ask him,he is always willing to help. Work hard to stay on top of assignmnents. If you know the material on his pretest study guides you will do well on his tests.
If you like working in groups, take Bro. Manner's class. He does well explaining things, and I enjoy his class. I can see where students get frustrated with the group work, though, so only take him if you like group work. There are no lectures. You can tell he enjoys teaching chemistry, and he tries to make the class interesting.
A good teacher when it comes to the aspect of teaching. Tests are returned quickly and group work is efficient. The downside of this class is the clarity, he never puts homework on I-Learn and provides no feedback whatsoever on exam reviews because he is suspicious of students cheating.
Manner is the man, he loves the students and what he teaches. If you ever need help, he's always willing to make time for you. Plus, he's a funny guy.
Great teacher, took the time to go in and get explanations and he would drop everything to help. The class is not easy but if you put your time in and work at it you'll do great.
Brother Manner is a great teacher, but at the same time very sarcastic so be careful if you dont like satire. He is willing to answer any questions just go to his office during his hours. His class consist of groups of 4 and each member has an assignment. If you work hard, and take the time to go to him and ask question you'll be ok. GREAT TEACHER!
Excellent teacher. The course was structured well.
Bro Manner leads self taught discussion as you work through a workbook throughout the semester as a group. The course is not set up as a lecture class, but rather as a guided study session that meets daily. Bro Manner is an ok teacher. The class is extremely difficult if you fall behind, but entirely possible. Attendance is non-mandatory.
There a reason why he's usually on the Department board than teaching in the classroom. Doesn't really teach as it's all group work which is too bad when you don't know what's going on and neither your group mates. I'm doing well though, no thanks to him might as well just learn on your own. Too bad attendance is required LOL! No curve.
I really like Brother Manner! The class is just tough and theres no lab attached anymore to help boost your grade. If you come to class prepared and pay attention, youll be fine. I do wish his office hours werent right in the middle of the day when most everyone it seems has class. Great man, knows his stuff!
Perhaps the best chemistry class I have ever taken besides analytical. Clear course objectives, and requirements defined. Material is very difficult, but Dr. Manner is more than willing to assist you in your endeavors. He wants you to succeed. If you do your part, there is no reason why you won't succeed in this course, and no reason you wont pass.
Advanced laboratory is exactly that, advanced. Be prepared to demonstrate proficiency in everything you learned as a chemistry major for laboratory report, they are extensive. Dr. Manner provides excellent feedback, he wants you to succeed. One of the most enjoyable labs I have ever taken, by a true expert in the field.
Doesn't teach, you only teach each other in groups. He does not prepare you for tests, he is a good guy though, and wants you to pass, but doesn't give you the means to do so.
Spent all our class in zoom breakout rooms and taught ourselves all the material. Almost no lectures or actual teaching from Professor Manner.
Really nice and helpful professor. There is definitely a lot of homework but it's kind of necessary for you to learn. We have POGIL style class which isn't my favorite, it leaves the work uneven and easy to want to finish fast. He's very kind and friendly. I would take it from him again.
This class is based purely on group work, so if chemistry doesn't come easy to you it will be almost impossible for you to succeed. I did really good on all the quizzes, homework, and in class, but when it came to the exams they seemed way harder. When we had questions in class I felt that they were shrugged off or mocked in a condescending way.
Brother Manner is a great guy and knows his stuff, but that said the class is rough. You teach yourself and then do activities in class. You also have pre-class quizzes. There is homework on every chapter. The exams are really hard. You have to memorize almost everything for each exam, only given periodic table. There are extra credit opportunities
You will work in a group every dy. He makes everything make sense so simply in pre-class videos for preperation. You will do tons of homework based on accuracy.
The class is set up in groups that you remain in the entire semester. Some find this helpful, others may find this method difficult. Brother Manner is willing to meet with students and offer ways to improve scores through extra credit, but it is up to the student to reach out. ATTEND RECITATION SESSIONS! They will help you understand the material.
The worst teacher I have ever had! doesn't teach, and expects you to know everything that his advanced chemistry students know.
This guy is just straight up the worst.
You can be good at Chem and still get a bad grade in this class. The class is based purely on group work, and I don't think I have heard Professor manner lecture us once. Please do not take this class from him.
Everybody in my group has serious complaints about this professor. None of us are learning the material. The exams are excruciating, and you will fail this class. Professor manner is the worst teacher I have ever had.
Brother Manner is a good teacher. He gives you tons of resources to succeed, and if you use them, it is hard not to get an A in the class. The structure of the class is set up the same every day and there are 3 quizzes a week that are due 15 mins before class starts. The study guides are very helpful for prepping for the tests.
All we did was group work. He didn't actually teach us we taught each other. We were in break out rooms every single class ALL CLASS LONG. If that gives you an idea of it. When you ask questions he makes you feel stupid. When he explains things he explains them like you've taken years of chemistry and would already know. He's weird too.
A Zoom Hybrid class. Each time you break into groups of 3-5 and work on an in-class assignment with breaks where the class comes back together and Bro Manner goes over each section with everyone. Homework piles up if you procrastinate but is pretty easy to stay on top of. Lots of extra study sessions available w/ him. He knows his stuff. 10/10.
Brother Manner is a good teacher. He is very knowledgable and nerdy. He loves you if you talk to him about mandalorian. /He can be a savage sometimes but don't be a wimp and laugh when he makes you uncomfortable. Overall, he got the job done and I liked having him as a Professor.
Every interaction with him he was either mean, or a forced sort of pleasant. I never wanted to ask him questions because he would talk to me like an idiot. Someone on here said that he is savage and you need to be tough. Completely disagree with that. If someone says that about a prof on here, just take a different prof honestly, its not worth it.
If you don't work well in groups, I wouldn't take a class from him. You learn through pre-class quizzes, class activities, and homework. He is sarcastic and that can come off a bit rude sometimes but just don't take it personally. He grades quickly and is quick to reply to emails. Class is far from easy but if you put time in, you can do well.
All time in class is spent working in groups. He usually has 10-15 mins of prep videos to watch before class and usually one homework assignment per week. His class is well structured, but he doesn't do much teaching himself. If you have a background in chemistry, you will be fine. If not, I would recommend a different professor.
Brother Manner knows what he's teaching and I'd like to think he's a good person. When it comes to teaching college students, he simply has no talent. I believe he recognizes this so he places students in these self-teaching groups. If you have his class it will not be the end of the world, but it will be difficult.
IDK why the previous raters ream on brother manner. I like him! I think his set up of team work during class helped me a ton, and he always answered my questions. Take it from me, there are FAR worse chemistry professors at BYUI. It's a hard class, but completely doable and brother Mannner wants you to succeed. I would see and judge for yourself.
There couldn't be a better teacher for Chem101. Brother Manner taught us so well. He is well educated and teaches you in a way where you have to learn for yourself, and not just memorize the material. He gives so many opportunities for you to get better and succeed. If you take the time for this class, you'll enjoy it!
Brother Manner is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is amazing. He really wants you to succeed in his course. It is obvious that he puts a lot of effort into teaching this course and helping his students. If you put in effort youll get an A. I would highly recommend taking Chem101 with Brother Manner.
Brother Manner is a 10/10, excellent teacher. im not usually one to rate a professor but he stood out to me. he genuinely cares for his students and will work one on one with you to see you succeed. yes chemistry is a hard subject all across the board, but he gives us the materials and study aids we need to be successful. i highly suggest Bro M!
Brother manner is very very condensending, but i guess a fairly good chem professor. Lots of work in groups, and fairly intense memorization for exams. Not terrible, but also not super great at getting what we were learning across clearly. If i absolutely had to, i would take him again, but he it pretty difficult to have has a teacher.
He doesnt ever teach the class. All you do in the class is show up and get put into breakout rooms where you teach yourself the material in your group and occasionally he goes over the answers with the class. Worst teacher Ive had so far would never recommend him. Doesnt do his job of teaching.
His resources are great, his explanations okay, but questions misinterpreted. There's lots of reading/resources if needed, but the most efficient are the in-class group activities. You'll struggle to learn, but that's Chem, schools struggle to teach it. From what I've heard of others, he's a decent professor. Great guy too. But keep google close.
I took him remote, so through zoom during covid (Fall 2020). He was unhelpful and treated all questions like they were dumb. We did group work every class and he would tell us the correct answers but never explain. If you want to do well, it'll be up to you outside of class.
he makes you feel stupid when you don't immediately understand what's going on and then talks to you like a child
Took him for Chem 101L and he will notify us if we will be dealing with ICE but not the fact that we will be using BLEACH for the Rate of Reactions Lab leading to many people having their nice/favorite shirt BLEACHED.
Brother Manner has a very good personality and his labs really help you learn the content. Easy A, the class is graded off participation. With that said sometimes the lab instructions had errors or they were very repetitive (it asks the same question over and over).
not super personable
The lab time is used to complete the lab in small groups that assigned for the whole semester. The lab is enough time to complete the lab, though expect to stay after a few minutes to finish. It was good to apply the chemical processes and rather enjoyable. There are no chairs, so only standing for the 3 hour lab.
I personally don't like the way the course material is administered- if you want to call it that- because we have to teach ourselves everything outside of class and then do group work all class every class which makes for so much homework in the end because you are teaching yourself outside of class and doing homework assignments on top of that.
it would be nice to be taught more in class instead of rushing through problems with groups
Where do I even start. You will never be taught in class, this class is all self-teaching so be prepared for that. Bro. Manner has been my least favorite professor throughout my college path. He also makes you feel dumb when you ask questions. 10/10 would not recommend.
In one word: Superb! Brother Manner is the perfect person to take 105L from. He is kind, funny, and helpful. It's a lab, so you have to show up, and the work can be tough sometimes if you're not math-savvy. But he and his TA were readily available to answer questions and offer help. I wish I was a chem major so i could take more classes from him.
Brother Manner made chemistry lab very fun, and always started with an inspirational spiritual thought. I looked forward to lab every week. He was actively walking around during lab, checking on each group, and guiding us in the right direction. When asking him a question, he really encouraged critical thinking. He wants us to learn and succeed.
Very kind and funny. He usually gave plenty of time in class to do everything so there was hardly ever homework. I really enjoyed his lab!
CHEM 101 LAB PROS: - little to no outside of class work - kind, funny, and happy to help you figure out your lab - labs aren't super hard, just have to do the work, show up to class early or on time, and you should be able to succeed!! - Spiritual thoughts! CONS: - standing for 2 hrs can be rough at times, but every 101L is that way.
He is very helpful! If you don't understand a topic being discussed in class he will gladly help in after class hours. He holds reviews for exams after they're taken so you can learn what you did wrong. I was skeptical at first but he ended up being one of my favorite professors!
Brother Manner is very knowledgable and he gives the best spiritual thoughts. He expects you to act like an adult, work effectively with your group, and read all of the directions very carefully. There is no homework outside of the lab time unless you don't finish your lab or group assignments.
Good and straightforward class. Just show up and participate. Teacher is very accommodating and understanding. I would highly recommend.
Manner is a good teacher and was present with the students in the lab, answering questions and helping us understand the material. I think the class was harder because he had a TA who graded quite harshly. There also was not much extra credit offered and he is strict about submitting on time, but he was clear about the expectations of the class.
No matter who you take this class from, it will be challenging and require real effort to earn a good grade. I took it in high school, but the credits didn't transfer. Brother Manner explained concepts clearly, made the class enjoyable, and was always helpful, approachable, and willing to answer questions. I would recommend him!
This class was honestly pretty easy! It's mostly group work, but you will do good if you show up weekly as it is moslty attendance based. I really liked the professor as well!
He's good at explaining the topics. It's important that you remember to complete the pre class quizzes, but the assignments are clear.
I loved Brother Manners class. He is very funny and as long as you watch the pre class videos and come to class you should be okay. He also gives really good study guides for exams and you get extra credit for completing them. I would definitely take another class by him.
Brother Manner is awesome. He has a good sense of humor and keeps spirits high in the classroom. He goes through things a little fast sometimes which can make things a little difficult. He's always open to help you out though if you go to his office hours or tutoring. Would highly recommend.
This class is straightforward if you stay engaged during the three-hour labs. Work done in class means little to no homework outside. Each lab ends with a short quiz, and there are no exams. The course is highly group-oriented, with assigned teams that remain the same throughout, so collaboration is key.
I recommend Brother Manner for anyone taking Chem 101. He was a great teacher and knew what to do to help us learn. The notes we take in class help a lot with homework and tests. Go to class and do your homework and you'll be fine. Just don't forget to take the pre-class quizzes.
He is a great teacher and very funny. As long as you attend lectures, you'll do fine.
This class is well-structured but requires self-discipline. Most learning comes from readings and videos, while class time is spent on worksheets. Attending open labs and test reviews is highly recommended. Brother Manner is supportive, offers many office hours, and genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Brother Manner is an awesome teacher! You do have to do prep work before class which basically teaches you the material, but then it is explained more in class which I really liked. He is also really excited about coming to class everyday which made going to class more enjoyable.
This course is very fast paced because of how much information we have to fit in such a short time so I usually went home from each lecture not knowing what I was learning. He teaches through worksheets that he shows us how to do and then we do class problems. He explains concepts fairly well.
Brother Manner is awesome. Chem is hard so be prepared to do a lot of homework. He gives extra credit practice problems on tests and is always super accesible and willing to work with you!
Brother Manners was a super nice professor and was super helpful in lab. The labs were sometimes difficult but a couple were a little bit fun. I gave him such a high difficulty rating because the TA who graded the assignments was super picky about points. I though labs were meant to help boost your grade not the opposite.
Incredible professor! He loves to make jokes and have fun! A short quiz before going to class, then learn material in class, and the homework is really helpful in getting comfortable with the material which is a huge help for the exams. He provides a study guide for all the exams which is spot on for the exam, and also counts for extra credit.
I had a tough time with this class and professor this semester. I found many of his comments to other students and me to be unhelpful and somewhat rude. I appreciated the spiritual thoughts at the beginning of the lab, but I had a hard time after that.
This was an amazing class! It takes some time to understand the material but the activities we do in class are really helpful when doing the homework and for studying for tests. He is really willing to help you understand the material and you have small groups that help as well.
Brother Manner is a very nice person but when it come to teaching, it's very difficult to understand. He doesn't really teach, he just shows you the answer. I struggled taking the tests because he didn't prepare us enough for them. I had to go home after every class and teach myself the material and go to tutoring at least 2-3 times a week.
He was an amazing professor and helped you along the way. While it heavily group based and you do the experiments on your own, he has a very well set up class and very easy to follow instructions.
His Chem 101 class has pre-class assignments (about 20 minutes) and homework for every lecture. There are 6 exams during the course (5 unit exams + 1 final). There is definitely a lot to do, but if you use the resources he has provided and go to tutoring you should do just fine.
He provides many resources such as lecture, interactive in-class learning sheets, pre-class videos and quizzes, and the textbook. He gives you the info you need to succeed in the class, if you put in the work to learn. Tutoring outside of class was very helpful. He can come across as strict, but he is more just clear on requirements.
Attendance is expected and necessary because you do 99% in-class activities. When in-class, you will be performing experiments and collecting data within a group setting. You fill out an interactive sheet as you go that has all of the instructions. It's a simple process of following the sheet and taking the post-class quiz. It's mostly self-guided.
I hadn't taken chemistry in about three years, so Chem 101 was challenging for me. Even though I earned a C, Brother Manner was very helpful and supportive. He explains concepts clearly, is patient, and truly wants students to understand. He is an amazing professor and I highly recommend him.
Everyone who has to take this class should take it with Brother Manner. Chemistry is tough, but he truly cares about his students. He holds weekly Zoom sessions to review material and explains concepts clearly. He's always available for questions and is incredibly kind and supportive.
Brother Manner is a great professor! Chem is really hard and there is a lot of material that can be super overwhelming. But if you watch of his videos and attend some of the outside meetings for pre and post-exam review it will really help. He also gives extra credit before exams, which you should not miss. All in all, very fair for the class.
