She is the greatest teacher I have ever had in my entire life. No lie.
she is a very nice person however her lectures are absolutly horrible. you cant copy her powerpoints because she doesnt put enough info on them, and then she does not verbally fill in the rest. also, her lectures are not very well organized; its hard to step back and look at the big picture because many of her slides/ points appear to be random.
Lectures are very dry. She pretypes her lecture, and basically recites it to the class for an hour and a half. Midterms are pretty easy as long as you stay awake in lecture.
Awesome professor. The class is reminiscent of high school, but the subject is amazing. She loves teaching the class, and she's done tons of field work herself, so she knows what she's talking about. Admittedly, sometimes the information is kind of random, hard to tie everything together, but it's an easy class if you can do a little memorization.
The class is very interesting and informative. She is a fabulous teacher, very smart and energetic. However if you are not that interested in biology and have no background in it what so ever the class is very hard. She expects you to memorize everything and there is a lot of information to distinguish.
Funny and interesting lectures, but soo much information to remember.
This class is extremely hard if you are not an upper division MCB major. Her lectures are random, and there is a****load to memorize. It's interesting but completely not worth the effort involved. She's a nice person, who is interested in what she teaches, but she automatcially assumes that everyone is a freaking archaeologist like herself.
Lectures are ridiculously complicated/overwhelming since she goes over slides of information within seconds. You are expected to memorize almost everything on these slides for the midterms. The class seems easy at first but it really involves knowing archaeology, genetics, anatomy, anthropology and everything else in between.
She is a horrible professor. Her lectures are not organized at all and jump all over the place. She is really really really boring and its a guarantee you will fall asleep in her class easily. If you are looking to get your AC requirement satisfied, I suggest you look at some other course.
At first this class seemed like it would be both interesting and easy. It turns out that was just a facade to keep pple from dropping out...she expects us to memorize every freakin slide, her lectures are incredibly boring, theres hella reading, and she is incredibly disorganized. As for AC credit--totally not worth the effort...take music instead.

This class is based on the memorization of countless random facts. Do not take it unless you wish to be challenged! Worst of all, I expected the class to be very interesting and it hasn't been at all until the last few weeks of class.
Too much memorization. I didn't think this would be an anthro class since it's called Biology, but wow I'm wrong.
wow, most of the people here have never taken a real course here at berkeley. this class is ridiculuously easy and interesting. yeah, there is memorization, but comming from a chemistry major, that ain't so bad. plus, she doesn't put a limit on how many A's and B's she gives out. so suck it up.
God she sucks i hate her so freaking bad worst damn teacher ever avoid her at ALL COSTS
somewhat interesting, not the best lecturer, anthro class that claims scientific truth, doesn't present all points of view and is very chosey about what is presented in class, lots of memorization, lots of bs, not the best class, but survivable
Very boring class. Based entirely on memorization. If you're really interested, just look up "Race" on Wikipedia, the article encompasses the entire curriculum of the class and is much more interesting.
She lectures based on Google searches and off of Wikipedia. Then she complicates the informations and expects you to memorize it. The course description sounds cool except the class is not interesting.
She's really hard to understand and the whole class is base on memorization. Not good at all.
Great class...easy, too. There was a lot of comprehension involved but I suspect all the disgruntled students missed that since they're complaining about memorization. Anyways, the class was very easy, and her information was always very complete and current. The only complaint was that some of the questions on exams seemed picky.
The class is very interesting and she is very enthusiastic about what she is talking about. She throws tons of information at you and there is a lot of memorization. Tests are amazingly difficult.
Great prof
people are freaking harsh here. i thought she was pretty good.
The class (Human Biological Variation) was based more on social science than on biology, and kept itself annoyingly ambiguous as to the actual biological variations found in humans. In other words, it tried so hard to be racially sensitive that it became vague to the point of disinterest. Thereby, it failed to answer its premise question.
She's awesome! Only wimps would rate her poorly.
Her lectures are clear and entertaining. Tests are not hard as long as you have been taking notes in class. Sometimes she tests on trivial details, but most of the time you just need to know the big concepts to get a good grade in the class. The essay questions are easy to guess, because there are only so many topics you can write a short essay to.
Terrific -- loved the class.
Cute, entertaining to a degree, but her topics in each lecture definitely jumped around a lot. The class isn't hard so long as you put in a little effort in studying and doing the readings. The four discussion group assignments were a pain to always find time for four random people to get together. Would recommend this class, not too difficult.
She loves her subject and she talks about it enthusiastically but the class and the tests are based heavily on lecture; sometimes interesting as well. But what got a little annoying in the end was that the point of the class is basically to prove to you that stereotypes are wrong... we're all equal... a very "AC" class overall.
awesome
I love her. Not only easy on the eyes but the sheer amount of information she gives to you is astounding. The best part is when she tells you put down your pen and then goes on this mind blowing, brain pounding explosion of knowledge. I worried about this class a little bit but it's nothing really to be fretting about.
because of her i decided to double major in IB. energetic and engaging lecturer; course ****many different topics, very easy to get into and do well in. most complaints are from people who don't understand that this is still an AC course and has to cover those blah aspects, but she still manages to keep it so interesting with those constraints
Very interesting seminar. Also just to note to the people who keep calling this class an Anthro class, it is. Here at Cal, the physical anthropologists got fed up and left Anthro and joined IB because the Anthropology department was not giving physical anthropology equal time or credit
She makes me want to be a biological anthropologist!
very nice, good looking for her age, wow. fun
Talks a bit too fast for some people to write but generally okay. Tries very hard to be funny.
I'm an English major who hadn't taken a bio class in five years, and this was not only very easy, but fulfilled my bio breadth and my AC requirement! Originally I took it for the reqs, but found myself actually interested in the subject matter. Hlusko is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. Come to class and the tests are EASY.
Dr. Hlusko is not only a good lecturer, she make learning fun. Great sense of humour
Grade based off of 3 midterms and one final each worth 20%. One paper worth 12%. 4 Group assignments each worth 2%. Work load was very reasonable for a 3 unit class. Tests based on lecture, with only one or two questions directly from the book. Lectures in a story style with nerdy humor.
Professor Hlusko's teaching style just did not mesh very well with how I learn. Although she emphasizes the lecture slides, some of the test questions were still confusing/subjective. Make sure you keep on top of the reading & study the slides closely!
Don't buy the book. You'll never use it and because she has the publisher compile an abridged edition, the bookstore won't buy it back. It's a waste of money. She is very condescending, and is self-centered. It was evident from the first class period that she thinks very highly of herself. Oh, and no matter what she says, this is an anthro course.
interesting thought provoking
Don't need the book at all... taking this class and i haven't read a single page of the book. Buy ASUC notes and you don't even need to go to class. just study from the ASUC notes + powerpoints & ur good to go. GSIs are good at replying to emails. 2 midterms. 1 final. 1 "research" paper even though she gives us all the resources and cites them foru
She's energetic and enthusiastic, but lectures are somewhat repetitive and disorganized. As said below, textbook unneeded. All the tested material is in the lectures, so don't skip them. Tests somewhat nit-picky about dates/locations, but easy grp projects give gimme points. No discussion: GSIs only grade and offer disgruntled study sessions.
I absolutely loved this professor. In her Ib 35AC class, which I highly recommend, I thought she was the clearest, most thought provoking professor I had. She is quite entertaining and loves to tell stories that are very relevant to the course. Tests are heavily based on lecture and some of the questions come directly from what she says in class.
Not the most interesting class you'll ever have, but it's up there. After all, I find myself quoting or remembering stuff from her lectures now. Some lectures were really engaging, but some were... Depends on your taste. Me? I wasn't too interested, BUT Hlusko was a good lecturer.
Really engaging and fun professor. Midterms and finals require rote memorization of dates and concepts which come purely from the lecture. Textbooks aren't needed.. at all. I recommend buying ASUC lecture notes-- I memorized everything on the notes and got an A+ on the final. Overall a good class.
Greatest lecturer I have ever had. She was amazing.
Save yourself $60 and don't buy the textbook. It's expensive because it's in color, but completely useless. Can't even re-sell. I would recommend buying ASUC lecture notes because she talks fast, and it's easy to miss something. Paper and group projects were grade-boosters. Exams are fine if you memorize everything from her lectures.
format: no discussion section, twice a week lectures w/ slides, 2 midterms (multiple choice, short answer, essay; testing mostly lecture), 1 final (at 8 am), 3 group projects (read articles, meet up with assigned group outside of classtime to discuss/write answers to 4-5 questions), and 1 research paper (she provides sources/prompt).
She's lively, but the topic is painfully boring. Her tests are totally unfair, you'll need to memorize EVERYTHING, especially the first (and most boring) section of the class, which is all just dates, names, places, homonid features, bones... I worked my butt off and still got an A-. If you want an A, MEMORIZE.
Really enjoyed this class, especially the material after the first midterm. The stuff before the first midterm was a bit like memorizing monkeys but I still found random facts to be fascinating. I cram-memorized right before the tests and got a solid A in the class. Lecture notes are a must.
This class was extremely interesting! The professor is very organized in her lectures. (Buy the lecture notes! help a lot! and go to lecture!) Tests are completely lecture-based so just study her words. Reading not really necessary, only if interested. There are 3 group projects a paper that boost your grade. Final is easy. Memorization class!
This class is not an easy A. I worked my butt off for a B. There's a paper, a lab, a final, and a midterm. Did very well on the paper and the lab but didn't do so well on the midterm and final. This class isn't curved! Which makes it harder, in my opinion. Most of the class got a B, there were very few A's.
She makes derogatory remarks about religion and God. Although science and religion do not see hand in hand, I see no need to constantly belittle those who hold different creeds. I thought Berkeley was liberal and accepting. This woman makes the university look bad.
Really enthusiastic and knowledgeable, made an effort to get the class interested. Some of the material is really interesting.
Amazing professor, super interesting lectures, managed to keep me awake even though lecture was early in the morning. Very engaging.
Very enthusiastic lecturer, and such as sweetheart too. Prof Hlusko is very nice and helpful during office hours, but during lecture, she tends to just speed through the slides, so make sure to catch everything she says, because she does tend to test on that.
Hlusko is super enthusiastic about her field which makes it a lot easier to pay attention in class. No textbook, just supplementary novels (used for section discussions). Tests are fair if you study the lecture details. 2 midterms, 1 final, 1 paper. Got a B+ in the class. If you are interested in bio or have taken bio at Cal, you'll be fine.
Does not convey points clearly, has a micro-managing teaching style. Avoid if you have the chance.
Professor Hlusko is one of the most approachable professors I've had thus far at Berkeley. She's also incredibly passionate about her field and always willing to share what she's researching. I found the class very interesting and I definitely recommend Hlusko. The course was very manageable with little homework!
I found the class super interesting. Although an AC, the class really just felt like a biology class (but in a good way). Hlusko is by far the best lecturer I have had at Berkeley so far. She's extremely passionate about the material and seems like she knows everything about the topics! The books were slightly necessary but weren't emphasized much.
She's very passionate and always there to help. The class is a lot of human evolution and variation, so get ready for a science-heavy AC.
Super amazing and sweet woman. Would highly recommend. Has some of the most fair grading criteria and is one of the most understanding professors when it comes to grade. Engage with the class and its a lot more fun!
Professor Hlusko is a very enthusiastic and passionate lecturer. She always had a very cheerful attitude in every class. The quizzes are quite tricky, but as long as you attend all the lectures/discussion sections and do well on the wiki project and final essay, you'll be solid.
Super passionate and very knowledgeable. Lectures were engaging and interesting. If you go to all the lectures and discussions, participate well, and do all the work (which isn't much really) you'll pass with flying stars. This class is an easy A, it all depends on how much effort you put into it.
Professor Hlusko is exceptionally phenomenal. She gives biweekly short answer assignments in lecture that are worth a bit of credit, but she has an amusing storytelling style of lecture and always encourages group discussion, and that's what makes lectures fun. Always approachable in OH. Advice: just be on the same page as everyone else in section.
Professor Hlusko is by far the best teacher, not only professor, I have ever had. I aspire to be this woman. Not only is the class incredibly clear and fair, but I left class every day utterly inspired. She is not only an expert in her field but the nuance in her lecture sheds light on the impeccable human being she is. An incredible human being.
Professor Hlusko is a wonderful lecturer, she truly loves her area of study which is a wonderful mixture of anthropology, biology, and genetics. She is an inspiring speaker and very accessible outside of class. Do beware of random spot assignments that make sure you went to lecture and did assigned readings.
I love Prof. Hlusko so much! Her lectures are amazing and the content is really interesting if youre in the human biology and its societal underpinnings. IB35AC is a really good class to fulfill the bio L&S breadth or AC req. Take good notes, start the final paper early, and do assignments. Its pretty easy, though a little effort is needed!
A GPA booster class. Nearly 80% of your grade is guaranteed to have a very high score, as long as you attend to every lecture and section and follow the guideline. There are no midterms and final (I heard she had those exams in previous years, but she became more lenient lol). Her passion for her field inspires me in my future academic pursuit.
Prof Hlusko is passionate and very experienced! She's so sweet and you can tell she cares about all her students. Lectures aren't technically mandatory but are incredibly interesting. There are random flash assignments for attendance. The quizzes are online and 3 hrs but do include info from lectures and are tricky! The final is an essay. Take!!
Professor Hlusko is an amazing lecturer, if you really love biology and primates take her course and go to her office hours. She is really a professor that cares about her students, she helped me get introduced to the biology program and faculty (even though I'm an anthropology major).
Class was asynch and all open note which made it very easy/manageable. All the content is very well organized online. Occasionally disc was mandatory but not all the time. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought, it's much more than hard science we talk about race, inequality, culture, and it's all relevant and interesting. Leslea is super sweet.
An amazing class to take online - the professor is clearly very engaged, the quizzes are very intuitive, the class itself is one of the easiest you will ever take at Cal. The prof herself seems so interested in the topic and is so caring and understanding. She also has extra credit opportunities. 10/10 please take IB35AC!
I cannot say enough great things about Prof. Hlusko and this class. She is an amazing lecturer (class was asynchronous) and the topic is fascinating. I'm not usually into science but I was excited to learn more every day of class and easily got an A. Quizzes were online and you get 2 chances with the highest score being kept. Easy but I learned sm!
If you like biology, you should definitely take IB35AC as your AC course. Because the class was online, I never interacted with Hlusko, but her lectures and activities were interesting and informative. This class definitely focused on learning rather than assessing. I would take another class with Hlusko in a heartbeat. No midterms, no final!
We were given 2 weeks to learn all of the material in the unit and had 2 chances per quiz. The quizzes were about 8-12 questions and was more on the medium to hard level. The course was asynchronous, so material was delivered through recorded videos by professor, podcasts, and articles. The GSIs were very helpful and Discussion was mandatory.
Easily the best professor Ive had at Berkeley. What a benevolent presence. Highly reccommend.
I loved this class. By far the best prepared out of all my classes for the online semester, Prof. Hlusko combined recorded lectures, mini assignments, and different reading sources into well thought out modules. She was also super sweet in office hours!
Easy class, legit quizzes are online and the final is a group project that doesn't really require much work/effort at all. A great class to fulfill both your life science/ American culture reqs. Prof and GSI's are all caring and sincerely wish for you to succeed. Dw abt this class at all, just spend an hour or two on it a week and you're solid.
This class was one of the best classes I've ever taken. Professor Hlusko is so sweet and her lectures are amazing. I would also highly recommend going to her office hours. There were 700 people in the class and less than 10 of us showed up to office hours each week. It made the class feel so much smaller and we had some really great discussions.
