You will write your fingers off in this class. He comes off as a jerk at first but that is to weed off the weak students. He eventually changes. Be prepared to write!! He is nice though and very funny!

Prof Hansen prepares every student to write well and efficiently. Besides teaching grammar and short storries, he also teaches real life lessons. He might sound strict in the beginning of the semester but he's one of the best professors in the college.

Not easy, not easy at all. But it's one of those things where you have a hard time but by the end you’re happy with the result. In college you gotta be able to write and this is the guy to teach you. This Professor teaches how to excel in writing, which is what you need, especially in this school (which has anal retentive professors on writing papers). He's hard and will make you work, I'm not going to lie, but when your getting A's on your SSC325 or CRJ321 or Gov435 or CRJ425 or PSC401 papers you'll thank me later, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Starts real tough but gets A LOT better. Don't let his first couple of classes scare you, he's just tryin to weed out the weakings. Grades almost entirely on grammer so you don't really have to worry about "digging deeper" into the material. Teaches a lot of new-age kinda stuff but it's very interesting and he makes class fly by. One of the best professors I had so far. I'll admit he will scare you at first but the class is easy. About 4-5 simple papers,and no tests or a final! He loves his motorcycle (which is the theme of the class) but its an easy excuse to get out of writing a paper. The book was awesome, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, and overall the class was GREAT!!!!!

His non-grammar oriented class material is rather boring and can be uninteresting to many students. However, he is worth taking just because he teaches grammar well

Although its a pretty complicated class, u get used to what he wants and u will LOVE coming! i did, he CHANGED my writing. im so glad i had him as a prof. hes funny!its hard to get an A, but the class is worth it!

very strict on grammar which is helpful. has a horrible grading system; he makes it up as he reads your answers. 1 quiz every week: He asks SPECIFIC questions that require SPECIFIC answers. about 3 papers on specificness (crap). too many readings! haven't seen my grade yet but i know its low. he's a creepy genius =) lol AVOIDD!!!!!

This professor is an amazing one. His class is challanging but you do walk away with a different level of knowledge and skill. If you actually listen and take notes writing will improve my 1st paper was a D+ and my last was an A- I love his style, he's a biker boy with a very spooky voice but he is realistic and down to earth. His class was fun.

One of the best professors I ever met. Even though, he may strict with the grammar. I believe he is very valuable and one of the best professor in John Jay college. I am for sure taking his class again and getting an A. His class is very interesting and you learn a lot from him. You won't be the same person when you come out of his class. Take him.

first, its A LOT of work the first month or so. but my semester isnt even over yet and i feel like my writing has improved. after the first month, it gets much easier. besides grammar and writing in general, i cant even begin to list all the life changing things i have learned from him. he is one of my favorite profs! take him- you wont regret it.

Dude is hilarious, plus you will learn how to write well and how to revise. He requires about a 1 pg paper a week and several writing exercises, he will check them eventually. Also, stay away from fancy words. "Individual," "automobile," and "due to the fact that" are all considered fancy or dumb in his class. Highly recommend his class.

Take him, the first month will be rough but he is going to make writing essays so much easier. I can now write a 3 page essay for him in about an hour just by his strategies. Im taking him again he is great !

He's the greatest English professors I have ever taken in my entire life. He's very funny and tells jokes and personal experiences that are often out of topic but definitely interesting. He has 6 degrees and is super smart, and if you are serious about your grammar, then take him! All you do is write essays, but I guarantee that you will improve!

Took him the first semester and had to bust my ass off because I truly sucked at grammar. But he changed that. Every single paper I hand in college comes back with the grades A or A-. If you know you suck at writing, take him, only if you're willing to put in the work. Take him again for 102, and he'll pass you with A.

I took this man twice because he is hilarious. He is very grammar heavy, but will make you a better writer if you listen to him. He loves motorcycles and Motorcycle gangs, which are the topic of some of his essays. He also has you write about other things, or your own interests for an essay or two, maybe 3.

Participation doesn't matter. I would participate the most but it did not help my grade. Grades are based on the FORMAT of the essay and the GRAMMAR, not the content. Know your FANBOYS! This was a difficult class because there are many grammatical rules that most teachersprofessors do not stress. I learned a lot, but the class was difficult.

If you want to learn how to write, like really write, then take his class. I took ENG201 with him as well and was not disappointed. He grades you based on the essays you hand in. It's a lot of work, but definitely worth the effort. Your grammar gets MUCH better and so does your sense of humor. Serious students only.

Professor Hansen (subject) is (verb) life-changing! This was one of the few times when I cared more about what I was learning rather than my actual grade. His relaxed demeanor, a pleasant trait (appositive), provides the ideal environment to learn in. Thank you Professor Hansen! You made me into a much better writer, speaker, and thinker.

Professor Hansen is by far my favorite professor yet. He is super helpful. He is a tough grader, but you learn so much when it comes to writing. THIS IS NOT A LIT COURSE , you only read 1 book, which is actually good. On my first paper I got an F. But at the end of the course I got a B+, and then A in 201 . If you're looking for something more than an A: for a teacher, a jokester, an amazing story teller, and a "SNOOT," (DFW insider), take him. Even if he had given me an F, the class still would have been worth taking. He will make you "Crawl through every sentence you write," but he will also make you laugh, cry a bit, and become a grammar Nazi.

TAKE HANSEN'S CLASS. I have never really struggled with writing, but he has taught me so so much. His class is so fun, and the papers are short, but everything in them counts. It gets a bit tedious (you grade your own papers), but it is SO worth it. One of my favorite classes.

"Way of the Peaceful Warrior," is the book that will be mainly used during the course. Amazing, funny, yet tough teacher. He will be reading essays out loud and pointing out all the mistakes. Don't take his comments personal he does it to everyone. Not too many essays, but he grades them very harshly. Not an easy class but you will learn A LOT.

Dr. Hansen is the best English teacher I've taken. He grades fairly, but you must attend. Interesting lectures and essay topic for the semester. Seven papers, mostly 1-2 pages, with a 4-5 page research essay. Like his philosophy on essay length: "I don't need to read 15 pages to know how well you write." Great class, highly recommended.

Dr. Lesley Hansen is one best professor, mentor I ever had. If you are trying to better your writing skill then you should take his class. If you would like to succeed his class, please do your homework on time, then go to the writing center to correct your mistake. Make sure you go to his office hours after completing every assignment.

He's a great professor overall. He knows what he's doing and knows how to teach the material in a way everyone understands. He teaches heavily on grammar as well, but overall you will definitely learning how to write better than you did before.

Taking this class with Professor Hansen was very stressful and pressure heavy. Papers are extremely short, about a page long, BUT he grades based on grammar. Three pronoun reference mistakes is an automatic C on the paper. Professor Hansen, however, has challenged and taught me so many things that I never knew or even imagined of. Great Professor.

Professor is super hilarious and really helps you become more self-aware of your writing I would definitely take his class again. His aura as a teacher is so hard to come by, I really appreciated taking his class.

Hansen was by far the best prof I have had. He is a grammar monster but he reviews it allll in the beginning of the semester with you. In the end he is lenient with grades. Just make sure you do all your papers regardless whether you think its bad or not because your grade will improve as long as you take his critics and put it into your writing.

The last part of the semester was online, so the prof zoomed and emailed a lot. He relaxed a little with his grades with the virus going around. He got the essays back right away with lots of comments on them. He was excellent with feedback.

I honestly enjoyed this class, YES he was basically like the Grammar Police but you learn a lot and his humor makes the class interesting. He doesn't really assign much homework, but we did have about 2 papers to do. I recommend if you want to learn what no other professor really teaches.

Professor Hansen really emphasizes the importance of grammar in papers! Write a Grammarly correct paper and he will give you a good grade. Papers are weekly but short and on subjects that are not boring. His final was a paper of your choice and he gives excellent feedback. Does not force you to participate either.

As a college freshman, I would say this is the hardest I have ever worked on grammar in my whole life. Hansen makes you think deeply into your essays and he as in fact, changed the way I write now. Prof. Hansen is a respectable man with lots of energy. The texts may be confusing but if you actually pay attention in class he helps make it more understandable. Grading is very unclear but a simple email and he allows you to make it up/revise. If you're up for a challenge I 100% suggest taking this class, otherwise, you're better off elsewhere.

I took Professor Hansen online and he is a tough grader, but if he sees you improved from your first essay to your last, he bumps your grade up a lot. I didn't do too well but I tried and improved little by little and surprisingly I got an A- . He does gives 7 essays but gives you enough time for them.

I took Professor Hansen's 201 class and expected it to be an easy A, but I was wrong and had to work for an A. He is an insightful man with the knowledge and enthusiasm that most college professors don't have. This enthusiasm can be seen when he talks to his students. If you are looking for an easy A, I don't recommend this class. In professor Hansen's class, you write seven essays and get comments on all of them. He is a tough grader, but, if you follow all of his guidelines and attend office hours you should do well. Went into 101 class thinking it would be boring, but left it learning how to write more in a semester than I ever did in 4 years of highschool. End of semester, and I'm a changed writer, ten times better than at the beginning. He says he's like a personal training coach, tough on you to get the best resultr. It works in this "game of writing." So take him and get your writing muscles in shape. A way of teaching not for everyone, strict and forceful, but it really worked for me.

After only three weeks, I have learned more about writing than ever before. Hansen is detailed; his bark is much worse than his bite. He lets you bend lots of writing conventions. With Cs on my first essays, I acpect a A in the course since he grades progressively, each essay better than the last. Take this essential, accomplished professor.

The Prof is tough but really fair. Him being picky made me more picky and this helped all my other courses. Though a tough grader, he lightens up at the end of the semester. And he did for me.
