Grades very hard.
her tests are 3 and 5 page essays expects a lot of detail just dont take her
No Comments
If you want to transfer to UCLA she is the best.
5-10 page essays for test, and expects a lot, but prepares you for real college.
Inconsistent instructions. Tends to go off on tangents during lecture. Doesn't adhere to syllabus. Puts a liberal spin on historical fact. Huge ego. Take the evening class!!!
Really good at keeping up wat she wanna teach, but expect a lot of readings.....
there were seven stdents in the class that were retaking the class (failed before).she grades very hard and expects a lot from the student.LOTS of writing and reading- if she likes your essay style- you are fine.she isnt very fair in grading.just avoid!
Is very unclear about her assignment requirements. Does not help students who ask. Will belittle people in class if thier response is not correct. One person in the class got an A on the essay while the majority had C's. Seems to be biased.
i would take her again. she definitely prepares you for the 4 year college. i think her grading is fair. i really learned a lot. there is definitely a lot of work. the lazy need not apply!!
good teacher, class will definitely challenge you. i barely did anywork and still managed a B...but i was lucky. dont take if you want an easy A
Class seems easy at first, but lots of reading and lots of work. Great lectures, but definitely a liberal spin to them. If you are prepared to work AND LEARN, take her, you will be happy you did. If you want an easy A, then shes not for you.
She sets the bar high and rewards those who step up to the challenge. Class material is great and she presents it well. Kawaguchi rocks but if you don't want to be pushed you won't appreciate her. Only transfer minded students should take her class.
Do not, I repeat, Do NOT take this class, way too much reading, expects too much, only one person in the whole class got an A
People who are lazy and want an easy grade do not take this class. She is very good and tells the truth. Yes, the class is very hard to pass, but it will make you use your brain and exercise it a little.
Expect to do over 1,000 pages of reading and write approximately 50 pages worth of essays and question answering. Kawaguchi implements tough grading practices. However, if you are not an academic **** you will learn and grow as a student exponentially.
2 Term Papers, No multiple choice exams, so much reading and she's a hard grader. This is not a class where you get an easy A, I don't think anyone even got an A
I took her class for winter. It was easy. Just a lot of reading. 3 exams, is you read and do the work you can easyly get a B!! She makes lectures interesting!
She's really hard, she makes work on the stupid quizes and she takes, 10 sec to check them. She's a nice person but she's the devil
She is good at the material...but she is a bad person who doesn't like students. Why does she teach? What is her purpose in life? I don't know but I know she must be pretty miserable to be as a uptight as she is.
I used to like history...but thanks to her...I now hate it. SHe is the worst...she presents good material but she is not a nice human being...I agree she is ugly.

She's demanding, has unrealistic grading expectations and fails to realize that its a GE course. Her lecture are informative and enjoyable but aren't in synch with the papers. Bottom line take the class with someone else, no hope for an A. She's brutal. Average grade on essay's D.
This women gave me a C not because i deserved it because she thought the C represents me she thinks i am too "Cool" to do better. I have never read so much to do about nothing at a point she made us write 3 essays in an exam thats some bull**** my hand had blisters she needs help!
Her lectures are straightforward and somewhat interesting however half way through the class I relaized that she was a really mean teacher. She favors certain students and gives everybody else C's and below. I would never EVER take her again.
Wonderful class, great material. Kawaguchi is always prepared and gives great lectures. You'll learn a lot. Be prepared to do college level writing, and do all the reading. She's fair but demanding. Highly recommend.
Dont expect to get anything higher than a C without going to every single office hour. She is a very tough professor. I understand that this is college but she makes you feel like your studying for your PhD. I took the class and got a C dropping my GPA. One person got a B in the class but it was his second time taking it. Take with CAUTION!!!!!!!!!
terrible!essays like crazy- she makes you feel like you are going for a doctorate in hist. 6 people were retaking the class, from an F.Mean lady, who gives little slack. Work your ass off- get a C.my GPA: 3.8- her class: my first D. Trust me I can write and study well- I am not a slacker! AVOID THIS CLASS like the plague.
I loved her class, it was very educational, afterall that's why you're in school. Her essays are tough, you have to have at least taken eng. 1 to do ok. I got a B in the class and worked my ass off. If you want to take it just for IGETC requirements, I reccomend you think twice. Overall really great class.
I GOT B in short semester very interesting if you love history I recomand her for HISTORY MAJORS ONLY IF YOU DO NOT KNOW/LIKE history DO NOT TAKE HER she is hard
Dr. Kawaguchi is an excellent teacher. However, she is VERY hard. She teaches as if it were UCLA not SMC. LOTS of essay writing. Expect to write 3 essay questions at midterm and final, plus two full papers. Only take her if you really love history and love to write essays. She is the department head, and teaches a specialized class, for a reason.

average
professor is very well qualified
Excellent teacher. Really knows her stuff and throws in occasional jokes to wake people up. But don't take her if you are just another lazy college student. LOTS of work, essays for midterms and final.
she sounds likt gilbert godfree...seriously. shes a good teacher and reading the material helps. at times it might seem like shes pulling it out of her ass but she knows her materials.
she is a hard grader but a good teacher overall. class is a lot of work.
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I enrolled in the class. Had I read these reviews I probably wouldn't have taken it, but now that I did, I'm grateful. She is a hard teacher, but it isn't an impossible course. The workload is stifling at times, but I walked away actually learning something valuable. This is a socially important course.
She's really hard. I did not know if I was going to get a great grade in the class. She's a great teacher and I learned a lot of interesting things from her lectures. She really gets you prepared for a 4 year University. If you read the text and do the homework you will pass with a good grade. You get to use the text on the tests. Remember to inclu
TAKE HER IF YOU ARE A HISTORY MAJOR! You actually walk away smarter. The workload is insane and she's insane-but in a good way. I wouldn't take her if you haven't completed your english requirements. She's a fantastic teacher but A students get Bs even Cs. I earned a B. I knew what she wanted but other classes, work, a life got in the way.
Yes, this class is difficult! Yes, the reading in considerable! Yes the workload is sometimes overwhelming, but Yes you can do it! I got an A taking four classes, and working full time. This professor cares about your academic success.
She's a good teacher, she knows what she's talking about and her lessons are interesting most of the time. But don't take her class unless you're prepared to study like mad. I got an A but I seriously had to spend hours every day studying. The reading exercises (10 of them) took forever to complete.
Dr. K is an amazing teacher. You walk away with a lot of knowledge. Class is taking notes the entire class everyday. You must buy the 3 books, you have to study and show up.Shes straight forward and helpful. Grading is rigorous and assignments are tedious. The midterm and final require days of preparation. If you get A's dont be surprised ifyouget a C
THIS CLASS IS HARD!!, the work takes forever to finish, the midterm was alright, but the final was tough, prepare to read alot and type alot
She must be a very unhappy person, and likes to take it out on everyone around her. VERY HARD!
History according to her is not based on simple regurgitation of facts and dates, but more on critical thinking! Very knowledge about the subject, however her lectures and Power Points don't always correlate with the study guides used for the tests. A lot of reading, and reading exercises are mostly critical thinking questions, so you learn more.
Kawaguchi was extremely helpful. opened my eyes to a lot of facts i was unaware of. it is true the class requires tremendous dedication but if youre a history major, as am i, it pays off.
Opened my eyes to REAL American History, some call it "liberal", but she doesn't sugarcoat Native American annihilation with terms like 'Manifest Destiny', it took me my entire public school education until I got the real truth and this is coming from a 'white'/'Caucasian' American.
Worth the effort. Great lectures, high reliance on primary source material, and extremely helpful. Would take her again if she taught the next level of American History.
Only take her if you have no other choice. Yes, the class is hard, but the real problem is that the point value of the assignments doesn't really equate the time and effort you're supposed to put in. She also grades unreasonably hard. If you really need the credits then take her, the subject matter is interesting, otherwise skip it.
Took her online class. Good weekly assignments, but they arent creative and have little value. 3 killer essays that are lrge percentages of ur grade, so if u dont do so well on 1 ur doomed and theres no way to make it up. VERY picky about essay format. She offers her help but even u take her up on it, it wont help u. Only take her if ur desperate.
LOTS OF PAPERS TO WRITE!!! Basically all the papers are based on the readings that are assigned. I really didn't do much reading, all I did was pay attention in class and that was good enough for me. If you like writing papers take this class. She is extremely helpful if you go to her office hours. It was stressful for me to get all papers in!!
I took her class for winter. She teaches very well! You have a lot of reading to do, but you can use all your hmwk on the midterm and final! a 17 week class condensed into 6 weeks, and you can still get a really good grade. Reading + Hmwk = Passing. (you have to read b/c she requires you to show evidence/quotes/proof of reading in midterms and final
Great Professor organized enjoys teaching and discussing topics. Very knowledgeable would not recommend class to anyone who has not completed Eng1 as writing integral component to the class, enjoyed thoroughly.
I took this class two semesters ago.
Professor Kawaguchi is very nice and quite funny. However, I found her to be extremely critical of assignments. It's as if she expects you to have a doctorate in History and forgets that you're there to learn. She does give feedback after she practically rips you a new one! There are no exams but three papers and her expectations are high!
DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE DO NOT TAKE.
VERY PLEASANT LADY+COMPETENT TEACHER!WE NEED MORE TEACHERS LIKE HER!I TOOK ONLINE CLASS, MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR THREADS-THIS IS WHAT WILL BUMP YOUR GRADE UP!A BIT HARD TO DO THE PAPERS DUE TO TAKING ONLINE CLASS,BUT YOU CAN ALWAYS COME TO GROUND CLASS AND LEARN A LOT.OVERALL GREAT TEACHER AND INTERESTING CLASS...
Well she found my blog because I quoted something I found funny from the online discussion. She asked me to remove it; I didnt & instead quoted her email on my blog. Everyone told me finding my blog was an extremely stalkerish thing to do. She made an announcement to the class warning the students that I might quote them in my blog. Uptight much?
Those coming into this class expecting to be spoon-fed history will be disappointed. Those coming in with an open mind and a willingness to do the basics will find this subject both fascinating and rewarding. Kawaguchi brings passion, a clever sense of humor and is more than fair. Do the work, ask questions and don't be afraid to ask for help!
Prof, Kawaguchi is very strict & loves to reduce your grade. No late HW are allowed. There's tons of work you have to do. Reading 4 books + Powerpoints = a detailed discussion post + 2 comments for other students as ur wkly HW + 3 -6 Page Essays. She doesn't grade u fast either, so her class is a pain. I DON'T RECOMMEND Her. A is impossible.
This is a hard and extremely challenging class. There were times when I didn?t think I was going to make it through. Only take this class if you have to take it to graduate, otherwise avoid at all cost.
Yeah this class is hard, and there are a lot of assignments to complete, but she does tell you this the first day of class. This class really teaches you history, and if you are not willing to put a lot of time into this class, dont bother adding.
This is not an easy class, but it is full of interesting information and you will most definitely improve your writing and research skills. If you are not interested in history and writing, do not take it. This will not be an easy A, but definitely worth while for history lovers.
This was a hard class! I took it over the summer semester, and it was SO MUCH to read and write I wanted to cry. The professor is very knowledgeful of the subject but somehow feels entitled to make you feel less smart while also campaigning for her political views. Dont take unless you LOVE history!
Hard, but an amazing professor!
By far the best teacher I've had at SMC besides one other English teacher. I have never been so interested in a class before. She really helps you understand what you're studying. I used to hate history because I am terrible at it but this class I love. I'd take it again if I could. Fabulous professor. Take this class ignore all comments. Take this class.
VERY time consuming. Be prepared for 3-6 page homework assignments each weak that must be VERY precise. Really good professor but extremely specific when it comes to grading.
If you have no other classes, go ahead. She requires 4 books and over 100 pages of reading per week. Reading assignments are long and not worth many points either. Overall a good professor but can be condescending and rude at times. Be warned, this class leaves VERY little time for a full-semester schedule.
I DO NOT recommend taking this "required" GE course if you can avoid it, especially during shorter semesters. A ton of redundant reading, extensive homework, sarcastic political undertones throughout her lectures. She knows the vast majority NEED to take her class to get a degree, and seems to enjoy making it as painful as possible. THUMBS DOWN!
Dr.K knows her stuff so if you come in thinking you'll BS your way out, then this is not the class for you. If you don't have high expectation for your self and are OK with the idea of having a mediocre job then this is not the class for you. If your want to be top notch and know how to do college work THIS IS THE class for you'll get stronger.
Beware!!! If history is not your best subject just take an easier professor with less work
If you love History, take this class. Other than that, this class requires a lot of work. Homework assignments are given every two weeks, and is difficult to even get a B on them. She is a nice proffesor, but this class is just so much work. If you take this class, be prepared to make the books your best friend.
Extremely hard class -- that being said, it was the highlight of my summer. If you plan to transfer to a four year then this will not only provide interesting information but a preparation for what lays ahead. She is very approachable, in office hours. This class gave me the confidence to continue and push harder.
I felt as though she loved the subject matter but wasn't a great teacher. She gave herself too much work grading and complained about it a lot. (?) We didn't get our midterms back until two days before the final. Lots of homework, harsh/inconsistant grading. Only recommend if you're interested in the subject/not taking it for a grade.
One of the hardest classes I had in my life. Don't know how someone can get an A in this class. Make sure you do you extra well beginning with first exam (There are 3 essays) or you will not be able to catch up. You are expected to read and write notes on endless chapters and the teacher huge powerpoint presentations every week. She is very picky.
She is nice, funny and competent, however, her questions on assignments are plain impossible to comprehend. I dedicated hours of re-reading because of the seemingly unorganized assignment syllabus. I wish someone would tell her not to "use 7 words when 3 will do" ("Oceans 11").
Hardest class ever because she is not clear and grades extremely strictly. She is not helpful. I do NOT recommend her at all. This class is fascinating however I spent hours reading and writing the essays. HOURS. And days for the essays. Take someone else for peets sake!!
Not an easy class, she has 3 textbooks plus 80-100 slides weekly with links to sites within the slides and sometimes additional readings. Very difficult grader, our weekly papers were 1,000 word-long essays and only worth 2.8% plus you have to comment on 2 other student's postings. This is time consuming and I didn't feel I learned from that.
HARD CLASS, requires a lot of time. Your HW is basically writing a paper every week. She doesn't seem to understand that student's have other classes. I took this class in addition to 4 others and it was extremely exhausting. I understand that she want to prepare us for college but I've been to a UC school and it was never as hard as her class
Disorganized, monotone, will bore you to death, assigns way too much reading and does not tell you what readings are important. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The Prof. covers hist from Columbus to the present: there are three books: they are used to write a total of 10 reports. Sometimes the reading assignments are a bit confusing, so ask if you need to. Lots of hard work, but facinating subject. If you've a heavy schedual/don't like reading/writing, take another class. I enjoyed the class.
Three textbooks, an essay pretty much every week, sucks away all my time to study for other classes. DO NOT TAKE HER. She is inconsiderate for handing way too much work. Although, I did learn a lot from the reading, but still not an easy class. Felt like a 6 unit class rather than a 3.
Fall 2012: No A's, 6 Bs, 17 Cs, 4 Ds, 16 Fs. That should give you an idea. It was the hardest class I have taken in my life. Do not take her class. Run Forrest, run from this teacher. She will deduct points for almost everything. Don't expect an A 'cause you won't get it.
Best class I have ever taken in my life! Prepared me well for other history classes and anything that requires a lot of writing or critical thinking. You will have to work hard and visit Dr. K during office hours if you want a good grade, but it is worth it. If you can't get a good grade in this class, you can forget transferring to a university.
Super hard, don't take this class you first semester, goes for both international and national students. You use all of the materials she gives you plus your notes from every class so you feel like you can't miss one class. But I have never learned so much in so little time before! My proudest C I have ever gotten! Go DR. K.
So I'm not one of the complaining students on here (you know, all of you going to great UCs after SMC) and I think her class was fair and college level. I worked hard, really gave thought to my papers (one a week) and did my best. Scored lower on midterms (she grades extra hard I believe for these) but I got a B and that's about what I deserved
You need to buy the book, it will hep you on your journey, or at least facilitate it.
Don't take this online class unless that is the only class you're taking. There are ever changing rule on posting comments (weekly discussion groups), she is very tough on essays, one has to study everyday or else. I love History, specially Ethnic History, but I regret immensely having taking this class with Prof. Kawaguchi Nor worth the trouble.
hardest class ever. unorganized, late on giving back papers, and three books plus a million other slides and videos to look at and through. Wish I had checked this site first. terrible assignments that are just confusing time consuming.
I remember this "professor" being your typical community college teacher. She is definitely not as smart as people think she is, and half the things she said are wrong, but who's there to correct her? She gave rambling lectures that don't really make sense and she repeats herself. A community college teacher who thinks she can teach at Harvard.
UGH. I took her class over the summer like last year and it was so stressful. I had to write papers for her class of the readings from the night before and she was very specific about what she wanted. A simple summary wasn't enough, you have to go into detail and basically write 1-2 page long summaries in order to get full credit.
Took over the summer with chemistry which was a bad idea. If you miss more than 2 then you're aiming for a low grade. I know this sounds weird but don't challenge yourself to cover the harder ethnic groups, she will not recognize your effort and the book(s) does NOT help. I actually really dislike the book. College level work. No extra credit
Do not take this class for a grade unless you want to risk screwing up your GPA. Take it PassFail. She rarely gives As, and fails a *lot* of students. You will fail the class if you don't turn in all of your homework. Assigns reading assignments and essays every week: it's like a UCLA class. She's a very knowledgable and nice person though.
Yes, you actually have to earn an A...
I was up for a challenge when seeing she had a c- but oh, boy did I know what I was in for. She lectures the whole class, and her assignments are given every week, its a 3-5 page paper on the lectures(which she sometimes doesn't even finish). She really teaches you though, her grading is just really hard.
I took this class a freshman and believe me it was the hardest thing ever. Way too much reading and the books are expensive and mandatory. Grading was very severe; hit A- rarely, mostly C and D. If your major is not history, save yourself the time and heartache of a bad GPA , long lectures and confusing 100+ pages of reading every week.
great professor wish all the history professors were like her.
She is a goo lecturer, she knows her stuff. She raises good arguments. However its one man show. For that semester it was my least interactive class. She didn't create the platform to know your classmates. Assignments (essays) due every week, and they had to be referenced. No referencing you are extremely lucky to get a C.
She is a funny woman. However, when it comes down to note taking - it can be tedious. Also, expect an abundance of homework that will be graded accurately. If you miss class, you miss out on important lectures and information. She does post the powerpoints online, but it doesn't cover the questions you will be answering in your homework
The homework killed me she wasn't clear on how to do it till the end, even then it was still confusing.
The class was very interesting I learned a lot. Be careful not to miss any homework assignments as they are worth a large portion of your grade.
This is not an easy course. She has expectations for the homework that you MUST meet. College level course, she is funny, and cares about the topic which makes it tolerable. Get ready to WORK for your grade.
Be prepared to spend the semester reading a TON. Her grading is extremely inconsistent, and takes her a while to give things back to you. Her teaching style is old school: lecture class with essay exams. She expects everything out of you in a short amount of time. I learned a lot from this class, but my grade doesn't reflect that. Interesting class
She is a nice lady but she doesn't explain to the students that this class is more of a survey of race, and what force used to create such construct, ie. cultural pluralism, assimilation, melting pot, etc. I feel students would do much more better if this was cleared up in the first lecture of class.
I was very skeptical about taking her class based on the reviews on how much work she gives out. I'm so glad I did because it was well worth it. People write bad reviews who apparently don't like homework. Apply yourself and do the reading because then outlines will be easy & helpful for the midterms. This class will definitely prepare you.
Okay lets begin. I don't understand all the hate on here. She is an amazing professor who teaches history very thoroughly. Yes she is hard, yes theres a lot of homework, and yes she makes you work for it. But realize that life is hard and nothing is meant to be easy. Be detailed, do the work, and do the readings. It will be better in the longterm
She expects you to work hard for your grade. Don't skip class, do your homework, keep up with readings, participate in class and you'll be just fine. She's a great teacher who explains things very well. Would definitely recommend.
i took her class as a freshman and failed. i thought the grade was a reflection to being a young & careless. i took the class again to replace that F during my last year. (*this was the only F on my transcript. i only have A's and B's. ) i found the class to be more difficult than all my science and math courses. my advice, take another professor.
Really tough class. Participation is extremely mandatory or you'll lose lots of points, huge amount of reading, assignments every week that must be short essays with proper format. Extremely tough grader, three big essays and she takes an extremely long time to grade. Does not drop anything. Do not recommend.
I'm a history major and I like a challenge, but this class was insanely difficult. Her reading assignments are unclear, all over the place, and very demanding. She didn't give grades on the 2 major assignments until 3 weeks before the end of the course. It's like she doesn't want you to succeed. I don't know who this class is aimed at. Not me.
Makes you buy 2 textbooks, one of them is exclusive to the SMC store only used, I spent about $115. She will make you read both of them and go thro her online lectures which are difficult to follow since they are poorly formatted and lack a lot of vital info and focus. Your entire grade is based around lengthy weekly discussions and writing essays.
She makes you read a lot but what she wants you to read is unclear. She has pages online that you have to read but it is hard to keep up with. Her homework is lots of work. She wants to have a paragraph for every question and there are about 10 questions per homework. You can't just show up and expect to pass.
She's a pretty nice person, but her class is so difficult. I'm so glad it's over with. DO NOT TAKER HER CLASS! Her grading is not good and she fails so many students. She's never clear on assignments. If you like a challenge this class is for you, but it's just way too hard for me. My stats class was easier than this class. At least I passed
I did every single extra credit and went to her office hours for advice on assignments. I have never worked this hard for a class before, I think it was a good experience to get through my future college life.
Professor Kawaguchi is an amazing person, passionate. Yes her class is hard work, but you have to work for grade. I went in thinking positive and ready to learn. Honestly that's what is needed. I would definitely take her class again.
HORRIFICALLY HORRIBLE! EXTREMELY INSENSITIVE. STUDENTS BEWARE! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
STAY AWAY!!!! if you want to maintain a good GPA. She will ruin your GPA even if you work your butt off, it seems that she will at best give you a B even if you really deserve an A. Shes difficult to please and honestly, does she even care about students grades? She says you earn the grade but actually its even harder to own her approval.
She knows not much. There are so many times where students ask questions and she says "I have no idea." Her lectures are like some nerd talking about some stuff they are somewhat familiar with bits by bits. There is no story line in her class. She never uses maps when explaining places. She's been using the same textbook for years. Boo
Tough grader, lots of reading, homework due every week, lecture heavy.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've EVER had. Unclear grading criteria, dense lectures, confusing readings. Don't take this class, it's hell. I cried several times over the stress this professor caused me. Deterred me from majoring in Environmental Studies.
she grades so hard, i work my butt off for an A-. the homework takes me hours to do, but her lectures are great. if you like a challenge, take this class.
Worst Professor I've EVER taken! Boring and long lectures. Isn't clear with the material or her assignments. She will confuse you!!!! She makes you work for your grade but you have to earn her approval for that to happen. And that happens close to 0 times! Don't take Kawaguchi, she'll lower your GPA and you'll be stressed all semester long! Avoid!!
Kawaguchi is an awful professor! her teaching style is so antique. She rushes through all the powerpoints without explaining historical events, she will confuse you! Worst off, she is a tough grader, no matter your effort!! Be prepared to read and dedicate hours for this class! There is also a mandatory beach cleanup you HAVE to complete! Avoid!!!
If you're looking for a challenging class then this is the your best bet. Kawaguchi is a horrible professor! She is unclear when presenting her powerpoints. Her class is boring and her assignments require tons of hours to complete! You have to complete 2 MANDATORY beach cleanups. Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had!
I never write mean rate my professors, but it's almost necessary to prevent anyone from taking this class. The class in itself is not hard, but she is a terrible grader and is vague when you ask for help so that doesn't help. Her lectures are scattered and disorganized. Overall NOT a good professor but she seems cool. The textbook also sucks.
I got A +. How to succeed Read everything that is required, Do all hw and not just the min 2 pages - I wrote 5-10 pages, Complete all extra credit tasks, Participate in class discussions, Ask questions about hw 10 times if needed until you get it - she loved it. I got into a top law school and she helped me prepare for it. Forever grateful
has you do outlines for homework to help you for the test however grades them like test.
The most important class I've taken. Well-chosen content + interesting lectures. In Scholars we had 5 outlines w/mini essays which we then could use on our midterm in-class essay; another essay; and a research paper (outline, source list, rough draft and final draft each graded). ALL are graded w/a high standard - I got C's when I usually get A's.
Shes probably the WORST teacher I had thus far in my 3 years attending college. I recommend that you DO NOT take her class unless you are willing to undergo her tough grading and tons of reading. It is unfortunate that I had to stick around with this teacher because I was avoiding a W. PLEASE DONT TAKE HER!!!! its for your own good.
Professor Kawaguchi is an amazing professor who is passionate about the subject of history. She is a tough grader but if you are willing to do the extra credit assignments and reach out to her if you're struggling then you'll be able to pass this class easily. Lots of homework but I'd rather do that then have quizzes and tests.
Dr. Kawaguchi is a selective grader using a very subjective scale with little to no feedback. She completely ignores non traditional students and did not provide the accommodations she should have for disabled students. There was no rubric, she says she wants critcal thinkers, but only if you use her reading and slides. AGEIST and discriminatory.
Out of all my four years of college she is one of the worst professors Ive ever had! She is unclear when approached regarding issues you have with the classs or assignments. She takes months to grade anything! It doesnt matter how hard you try you will never get the grade you deserve ! There is little to no feedback!! She will ruin your GPA
WAY too much work for a 3-unit class. Reading assignments due every week, which means reading multiple pages from both textbooks basically everyday. Once remote learning began, took a while to extend deadlines on assignments and did not give proper lectures until a few weeks before the semester ended. This class stressed me out badly
Dr. K lectures were interesting at first. However, it is a lot of work for a 3-unit class. When switching to remote learning, very little guidance was given and she did not start doing live meetings until the semester was almost over. There are a lot of chances for extra credit which you should definitely take advantage of bc you will need it!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken but definitely transformed me as a student because I developed strong writing skills, a passion for the environment that I didn't know existed, and grew a better work ethic. This is way more work than 3units and you read A LOT. She is very nice, but is tough on you but for the betterment of yourself!
I've long moved on from SMC, graduating UCLA + UCLA Law, but what I learned from Prof. Kawaguchi -- about history, how world around me works, how to study, analyze + learn, + about myself -- helped me immeasurably in my path. I had a good grounding for other upper classes (even in other fields). UCLA was smooth b/c of her. Invest in yourself.
