she is awsome!!!
She is absolutely terrific!! She tries her best to make history interesting and fun. And she is very understanding.
I love History. It is unfortunate that she doesn't know anything about it. If you like History and enjoy learning about it, this is not the class for you. If you just want an easy A and a completion grade this is a Prof. that you will enjoy.
she is really sweet, but VERY broad in her lectures. On tests she doesn't like specifics, but the general idea of each chapter. She's big on visual aid. If you go to class she tells you what to focus on for tests. relatively easy, but I had difficulty in this class because of how broad and vague tests were. never really knew what to expect
First of all i can say i am not a student that primarily focuses on school yet I know this professor is great! she teaches from a different perspective that is informative and actually interesting, she will help you out and book usage is low which i like. Take her
Initially, she focused on power points, but as the semester progressed, she started showing short films and more visual aids. She's very informative and often gives fascinating details about history. Her tests are broad, and lack useless details. If you attend class, listen and pay attention, and also skim through the chapters, YOU WILL EARN AN A.
I HIGHLY recommend taking this class with Mrs. Hicks. She is a GREAT teacher and really enjoys making history fun and easy to understand. She is very helpful and understanding. I love how she likes to use visual aids as well because it makes the class alot more intersting and fun to learn about history. She is never the one to make class boring.
Mrs. Hicks has been one of the BEST teachers I have had since i started at UTSA. She is so nice, and always has a smile. She is more than willing to work with anyone for any reason, and is there to help you, not screw you over, easy A+ If you can take her class, I definitely recommend it! She is AWESOME!
prof hicks is an awesome instructor. she like to use visual aids and she also knows that it is just a core class. it is an easy class if you are looking to take a history class i recommend her.
Mrs. Hicks is the best History professor!! She doesn't focus on dates; however, teaches what she wants you to remember 10 years down the road. Easy A!! Great Class.
Definitely got a much clearer understading of History from Mrs. Hicks. Awesome teacher to take other courses with if she taught them, she knows her stuff thats for sure.
Don't pay attention to what the other negative commentators have said. They're probably just not used to her non-traditional ways of teaching. Prof. Hicks is probably one of the best professors out there who brings a fresh new way of teaching History to her students. She doesn't put emphasis on dates, but more on important things like gen. events.
Outstanding professor. "Sweeping trends" concept is brilliant. I learned a great deal, and I loved how she worked to make the material real and relevant. I suspect those who criticized her were those who didn't show up or apply themselves.
the cutest nicest teacher ever. she is actually there for the students and is willing to do anything to help. gets off topic sometimes but a very good teacher, i enjoyed her alot
Mrs. Hicks is a really good teacher. Sometimes it may seem a bit tidious because she will teach the same things several days in a row, but for those who actually go to class and listen, its helpful. She includes a lot of visual aid for those who are not verbal learners. She is very intelligent and will go out of her way to accomodate any student.
Her personality is great but thats about all she has going for herself. I love history and I hate that I wasted a whole semester away in that class. It seemed like half the class knew more about history than she did. If you read your book you will learn because she wont teach you.
She is an awesome professor. I just wish she would have curved an 88 into an A but overall she is a good professor and she puts the powerpoints online, two grades a midterm (pretty easy) and a final (more difficuly with no curve)
Professor Hicks strongly cares about each student. She is fair, her tests aren't too difficult, and she is a fun, sweet lady. I did not like history before and she teaches it in a way that is more fun, and differently than any other history class. If your a visual learner, she is for you, as she brings in many things from wars such as weapons, book
Professor Hicks is the greatest history prof I've had. If you're like me, you're taking history just to satisfy a credit and need a class like hers to help pull along your gpa. Her class was only a survey of history, so I didn't have to learn anything beyond what I learned in High School. You would have to be crazy not to take her.
I have thoroughly enjoyed being taught by Mrs. Hicks. She is a great teacher and has inspired me to continue learning with an open and positive mind. She has a love and passion for Hist. and passes that love onto her students. She put alot of time making her class amusing, entertaining, delightful, and overall; a wonderful learning experience!
It was my first semester college and Mrs. Hicks was by far my favorite professor. She's extremely helpful and determined for her students to do their best. She doesn't require her students do memorize useless facts but know trends of history. Overall, she was a great teacher and I wish she could teach every one of my classes.
Professor Hicks is an Excellent Teacher. She bent over backwards for her Students. All of the Chapters from the Book were professionally OUTLINED AND PUT ON WEBCT for Her Students. And COMING TO CLASS TO TAKE NOTES AND LISTEN TO HER LECTURES. Professor Hicks SPOONED FEED HER STUDENTS ! ALL YOU HAD TO DO IS READ AND COME TO CLASS! Victor Vrazel
She was very helpful throught the year. Spoke clearly while giving powerpoint speechs. I would definately take her for any class and regret it if i didnt.
She is an amazing teacher, and has a young sense of humor, she will bend over backwards to make sure you understand the subject. SHE IS THE BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. you will regret not taking her. and shes not afraid to hand out A's like alot of prof are.
Ms.Hicks is a great teacher. I had fun learning about history. Weird thing about it is that i hate history. She did a good job of making it fun. All you have to do is come to class. Pay attention to what she says & take notes Put in a little effort & you will get an A. I highly recommend that you take her class if you need the credit.
She is an incredible teacher, she really strives to make her students excel in her course. As long as you attend class and listen you will do really well in her course. She is such a sweet lady!! She will do anything to make sure you succeed! I strongly recommend her course to those who need the credit!
Mrs. Hicks is an excellent teacher. I strongly recommend going to class and reading the book, ff you want to learn about history, not just receive an easy "A". She has a great personality and she is among the few teachers that I consider to be my friend. Unlike most teachers she really wants to help her students and she will go out of her way.
A very nice lady! She will really work with you to explain something if you ask for her help. She is very smart and has got a lot to teach you if you want to learn. But the class was almost too easy, you don't even have to show up or read the book to pass. Very easy A!
At first, I thought Mrs. Hicks was a bit unorganized, but at the end of the semester when I ended up with an 89, she was incredibly fair and helpful. She let me come in and complete an extra credit assignment, and worked with me to get the grade I desired. It's an easy and interesting class--even if you don't attend.
She was so helpful and tried her best to assist her students.
I took Hicks for two semesters, and she's definitely a great lady and prof. She'll use many visual aids in class, something that helped me understand history even better. She REALLY CARES about her students and about teaching the material. A MUST TAKE!
Extremely helpful and nice teacher. Recommend her to all students with or with out interest for the subject! She was very flexible in letting me take the final early. Truly an exceptional teacher and has genuine interest in her student's achievement in her class. She's really good!
She's a great Teacher. Always wanting to help in the best way she can. & also cracks jokes out of the blue sometimes its funny. :D If you don't like history, like me, this class will definitely not be a struggle like you have in mind.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER! I have always hated history and everything about it! she is the most awesome teacher, doesnt make you remember names or dates! She is such a sweet lady and really cares about your grades. TAKE HER
Professor Hicks is great! Just don't underestimate the value of attending her lectures. She tells you "this would be a good test question" and 9 times out of 10, it is. She really helps you understand what's going on, not just this memorization of names/dates nonsense. TAKE HER CLASS!
i absolutely loved professor hicks!!! shes wonderful! i hated history until i took her. & you actually learn the material and she makes it so interesting! i never dreaded going to class. I would definitely recommend going to class. she basically tells you what questions are going to be on the test. great professor. TAKE HER!
take her. end of story. The first day of history class, she said you don't have to know names and dates. I never went to class. just to take the tests. the test were like 35 multiple choice and it was common sense. just do yourself a favor and take her. Promise you won't regret it. :]
Loved her!! The textbook and her lectures are very intresting. You learn alot! Tests are easy if you attend class. Sometimes the questions are to broad though. Very sweet lady! I got an A in her class.
Nice teacher, showed up to class only for tests. Gives 4 tests, no final, and one 3 paged essay. Super easy grader. Tests are common sense, 5th grade level. Wants u to understand the basics, no dates or names. I got an 88, shoulda had an A but was an easy class :P
Take her. End of question. She doesn't require you to remember names or dates. She usually would say "You will need to know this for the test:" All you have to do is write down the stuff she says after and BAM, you will most likely get an A on the test. She is also SUPER nice and always willing to help. 4 tests and an easy-to-write essay.
She teaches history by focusing on the main subjects making it easier to learn and remember since she does not require names and dates and minor, insignificant details. Although the test can be convoluted at times they are short and fairly easy if you keep up with the material. I didn't even open the book all her test questions were drawn from clas
Had this prof for pre-Columbus to civil war. Very caring professor!!! Sweet and approachable. Do not buy the book-you will not use it.
Very good professor! Four tests-last test is final but not cumulative-and one easy essay. Flexible essay due date. Brought in items related to time period being taught. Very approachable and accessible. Did not stress dates and names but ideas and overall themes instead. Used ppt-book is not necessary but I found it helpful. Definitely recommend!
She was a good teacher, she tells you what is going to be on the test. She says "you might want to know... or I could ask you about..." so write that stuff down. Test are pretty freaking. MAKE SURE TO READ THE TEXT. TEST QUESTIONS WILL BE FROM THE TEXT! take her
I love this woman! She is a sweetheart. If you go and talk to her during office hours, she will remember your name and help you if you need it. She is open to suggestions, if you feel that a test question is unfair, you can talk to her during office hours and throw the question out, and so basically the test is curved. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER! :)
I took her for two semesters and barely went to class other then to take tests. I got an A in both classes. Don't buy the book. Do go to class the day before a test because she will review. Super easy and super nice professor. Take her if you can!
She is a great teacher and truly cares about the subject, even if you dont. You dont need the book, dont buy it. Just go to class and take notes, all of the tests come from her powerpoints. Study those and youre solid
I loved this teacher. She is so nice and makes history very interesting. Attend class and take notes and you will do great! She wants you to know general things not specific dates and such! Loved, loved her!
She is a super sweet professor, she care about everyone in the class, and has very great lecture. only 4 tests and I only read the power-points the day before tests, but do need go to class since it is helpful.I may get at least B this semester and going to take another class of hers next semester!
Professor Hicks is very nice and is more than willing to help students. Attendance isnt mandatory but is recommended since she gives extra test questions to the class. Lectures are fun to attend and the 4 tests are easy if you study your notes. Take her, she is easily the best professor at UTSA!
HIS Civ War to Pres. Very kind and genuinely caring person. Her lectures reflect this (uses simple language and panders to class), but she gets the information across. Utilizes multiple forms of teaching (tactile, visual, etc.) Grade is based on EASY exams and a short essay on your family tree. Hardly takes much time away from other classes.
Attending class is a must. Many test questions come from lecture and are not found in the book. Reading the text is a must. Tests are easy. Teacher relates well to the students. High marks!
Her class is simple. If you want an easy A, then take it, go to class, & look at the powerpoints. But if you care about history, you've been warned. Her comparisons were annoying, she said Newt Gingrich was great at one point, & we watched the Patriot like that's somehow accurate? The moment I saw Lady Gaga as one of the ans choices, I was done.
I appreciated her sense of humor and other ways to demonstrate the way history is viewed. She is definitely not the traditional BORING professor who just reads from powerpoint. I waited to take history until my senior year bc I had no interest and I left this semester actually appreciating what I learned from class. I'm glad I took her.
Mrs. Hicks is the best teacher ever, she is funny, nice and makes the material very relate able. She makes the material very clear and easy to understand. I looked forward to coming to class those 5 weeks I had her, she is the only teacher I consider my friend. She is just genuinely trying to help students understand history. I got an A+ :)
Best teacher ever! She is super easy. She makes the lectures interesting. You must read the text to do well on the tests. There's also some questions from her lectures. Don't interrupt her class, though, or she'll call you out on it. I loved this class.
Most awesome teacher I ever had. Class is interesting and addicted sometime. RECOMMENDED
Great professor test are okay must read the book in order to do well on the exam but easy class to understand she simplifies it and bring visuals to help you understand better. Highly recommend her.
Don't take any other professor. Her class is fabulous! Class isnt mandatory but she provides visuals in class that appear on the test. Tests are easy A's if you attend class regularly. The final ISN'T cummalative. I wish I had taken her for my first history course.
Definitely an easy A. Going to class is mandatory cause she basically tells you test answers during lecture. I never read the book and made a 101. EC option - do it! tests are easy, lots of goof possible answer choices so it's pretty obvious which one is right. Brings in visuals that appear on tests so go to class. Super sweet, funny, engaged
Such a sweet lady! Definitely go to class, the things she says in class will be on the exams. She is quirky and entertaining. Easy A.
Amazing person. She is looking out for her students. Although class is not mandatory her tests are straight from her notes. her class is more like a conversation, she makes it very comfortable and it goes by quickly. 4 tests, no HW and extra credit assignment at the middle of the course.
Her tests will make you laugh out loud...I'm not kidding you, even in our final the guy next to me was cracking up. You shouldn't skip class because the majority of her tests are from visuals and lecture. By visuals, she often passes a book in a class of 300 kids. If that isn't awesome I don't know what is. TAKE THIS SWEET AND HILARIOUS WOMAN.
lovely and great teacher, try to help everyone, make class interesting, there's an extra credit. Sending emails for reminding.
Professor Hicks was a sweet lady. She is very nice and made history interesting. Her tests were easy and had questions based off of the visuals she showed us in class. She also gave us a 25 point extra credit opportunity that had to do with genealogy. If you don't make an A in this class, then I don't know what to tell you!
She is great! I hated history before her class but now love it. She teaches in an interactive way that makes you want to learn. plus gives extra credit I made an A+. Super easy, Just attend class!
Very sweet, happy attitude. Easy class. Attendance is not mandatory, but go for notes so you won't have to read the textbook. Exams are EXTREMELY easy. Shows videos and props as examples for questions on exams. There is an optional extra credit; DO IT.
This professor is the second easiest professor for HIS 1053 if you can get Professor Debs... But professor Hicks is an easy A+. Class is not mandatory but she gives all the answers in class that will be on the test. Plus she gives extra credit for attendance... The lectures are not boring and she brings items from previous wars. Good for your GPA
For history classes, you read/memorize a lot of data and deduce a short summary of "lesson of the story." But, if you're like me, you get lost in all the details of the happenings. This professor emphasizes the "bottom line" & trends so you never have to memorize. Her visual aids help too! Take her class! It's worth every penny of your tuition fee!
One of my favorite professors at UTSA. There were few assignments. No trick questions on the exams. Interesting lectures. She tends to forget things so you'll have to remind her sometimes. She's a sweetheart though. Take her class!!
I toke here for my 2 history HIS 1053 & 2053 courses back to spring 2013 and fall 2013. such a sweet professor i have ever meet she always willing to help a lot, she recommend to read before you go to her class, Take here you will not regret
Sweetest professor ever! Definitely recommend her! She let's you know exactly what's on the exams and the final exam was an essay. I received a 100 in the course, definitely recommend her!
Professor Hicks is one of the helpful professor i have ever meet in my university career. I must tell all international students to take her class if your guys want to learn in a easy way.
I've always been bored and not interested in History. Mrs. Hicks is such a good instructor that I couldn't wait for the next class. Just listening to her lectures is enough to pass the tests, but you will want to read the text and other history books. She brings visuals, and always keeps you engaged. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
She is a great professor who knows what she is talking about and is able to teach clearly. Doesn't have any ridiculous extra assignments or papers. Love this class.
One of the best professors I've had. I never actually opened the book, however I took really good notes during lectures, and have an A. Never had homework or any kind of essays. Her test are the best. Definetly, taking her for my second history class.
Me personally I never really cared for history. Professor Hicks made me love this subject as much as she obviously does. She teaches with a lot of enthusiasm and you can tell shes very passionate about her field of study. If you go to class and take notes i guarantee you will make a B+ or higher. She's freakin awesome!!
Talking to her is always nice and her lectures are actually cool to listen to. She would even tell interesting side stories that links to the subject. Sometimes she does videos where we take notes from sometimes. She made history fun to learn for me and that could really effect me if I'm bored constantly. Make sure to come to class regularly!
Great prof. Attending class is a must for an A because she uses a lot of visual. Lectures are fun for a history class, and never boring. Prof. Hicks is amazingly sweet and funny. She bought the class Starbucks once. You'll have to read and attend class to get an A but you'll still get at least a b if you do either or. Would take her again.
Professor Hicks is amazing! She engages in lecture to the point where it makes things exciting. She always brings in cool visuals for the class. Lectures give a lot of the answers to tests, but reading is recommended. Does offer EC. She really hates it when people have phones out, so don't do that. She'll call you out. Would take again.
As an international student I never thought I will enjoy history class. Professor Hicks changed the way I see History now. Her class is fun to attend, and her way of teaching is interesting (a lot of visuals. And she is always there when you need help. You must go to class and read the book because her exams are (50%book 50%lectures) RECOMMENDED
She is a very sweet professor. I used to hate history before I took her class. Show up to class, take notes and you will do just fine!
Super easy class. Posts powerpoints and practically tells you what's on the test during class.
Super easy! Just listen to her lectures, she tells you what's on the test! she writes her own test and a lot of the answers to the questions are obvious but don't start to slack off during the end because she makes test harder.
Really easy, gives pop quizzes which are extra credit if you go to class. The final is not cumulative, and she is super nice and easy to talk to if you need help.
Hicks is good professor. If you are going for an A, go to class since she uses videos and other history related souvenirs in her lectures that she also tests over. Make sure to read the book.
Sometimes she will give pop quizzes based on lecture. She does give extra credit, but it is limited to the end of the course and offered only to those who may not pass. However, it is amazingly simple to pass her class if you go to lecture as she likes to discuss what she puts on tests and some reading is required if you want an A+.
Her lectures are fun and easy to follow and her tests are mostly off of the lecture. This is not a class to skip. If it's too hard, it's probably because that student didn't show up. If you show up, take notes and pay attention, you can pass the tests without even really looking at the book. Want an A? Read the book, too. It is school after all.
THIS LADY IS AWESOME. Showed up to every class and read every chapter. She was interesting, loving, funny and sincerely wanted every student to pass. Exams were so easy, will finish in less than 30 minutes. Just show up to lecture, read the book and you'll get an EASY A.
I took Hicks for History 1043 during the summer and it was the best thing I could've done. Attendance is mandatory, but an easy grade booster. This was my first time getting an A in history and also my first time enjoying the subject. I would recommend Hicks to everyone I know and hope to take her again. *notes are for a grade!!
She's a great professor and person. I was busy with extra duties outside of school and I came to her with my concerns and she really helped me out. She has a lot of patience, but if you skip class or don't study you wont pass. Her lectures are clear about what is on tests. She brings historic relics to class to further your understanding of subject
She is an awesome teacher. Her test are easy. You do have to show up to class though, because she mention stuff that are not in the textbook and are on the exam. I would take her again, without a hesitation. She makes class fun and not boring. I would strongly recommend you take her class.
Prof Hicks is a great professor. She is there for her students and makes her lectures interesting by bringing visuals that are on the test. During her lectures she references test questions specifically. There are only 4 tests, which aren't hard. She has opportunity for extra credit. She makes jokes to refocus the class and I enjoyed her lectures.
I'm personally not a fan of history but professor Hicks made the class fun. she jokes around a lot and her tests aren't hard but you do have to study a bit. showing up to class helps because she summarizes the chapters into powerpoints and points out stuff that might or will be on the test. would definitely take again!
Prepare to read the chapters and go to class! She gives a lot of visuals and you must take notes in order to do well on the exams. I am usually not a fan of History, but I definitely liked this class. I recommend to take her!
Just take this, trust me.
Leslie is hands down the best professor for any core class I have had to take. I usually really don't like history but she made it interesting and broke lectures up with humor. Just go to class, write down everything on her powerpoint, and you will make an A.
I love Professor Hicks. She is so sweet. Never have I seen an early 8am class, with almost every seat full. Show up to class, because she will give you example questions of what will be on exams. She cares about her students, and will make an effort to learn your name. She is funny, and passionate about her job. Take Professor Hicks!
Professor hicks is super helpful and if you go to lecture and attend SI there should be no reason you don't get an A. Lectures and tests reflect each other 100%. Super nice 4 tests and 1 essay but the essay isn't tough! Gives you a long time to do the essay! Would definitely take her again!
she is a great professor hope to get her in other history classes.
Professor Hicks is an awesome professor! As long as you show up to class, you will be given everything you need to know to pass the class if not get an easy A. Her lectures do not make it hard to pay attention to, and she even brings visuals to class. Show up, pay attention, and she makes the class a breeze. Would definitely recommend!
I would totally recommend having Mrs. Hicks as your professor! Her lectures are easy to follow, and a lot of questions in the exam come from her powerpoints. Reading isn't necessary, but I would recommend it. The tests themselves are straightforward if you've been going to class or reading the book. Overall a very good experience, would take again.
Professor Hicks is amazing! One of my favorite professors. Never opened the book. Great and in-depth lectures. Does use just about every bit of time she can for notes but it is worth it. Movies and videos are shown, as well as props. Emphasizes "possible" test questions in every class. Show up to class and pay attention, you'll have no problem.
I wish all my classes were like this! She is funny and gives great lectures that make the time fly. No homework just read and take good notes and you will do great. No surprises just four multiple choice exams. The class was full the entire semester and that says a lot!
Hilarious. Didn't need the book, just go to class and go to SI. No HW, no attendance. Only 3 tests and final. Nothing cumulative. Extra credit only for grades under C. COPY THE SLIDES: SHE DOES NOT GIVE OUT NOTES. Made 100s on two tests and final grade of 98 by copying slides and going to SI. Never even read the book. Taking her summer class too.
Professor Hicks is the sweetest lady!! If you pay attention in class and read your book, making an A in her class isn't hard. She also goes out of her way to bring visuals and props to class, which made the class more interesting and enjoyable. I loved her class and I would recommend taking her!!
Mrs Hicks is the greatest professor. She doesn't try to make a basic history elective overly difficult, while at the same time makes the class engaging and very interesting. I loved taking her for History 1053! She designs her own tests, and if you miss class you won't get the best grade. Do some of the reading and go to class it's an easy A.
This lady is awesome, and I took 1053 with another professor and regret not taking her instead. For me this class was an easy A, I didn't even use the book. Take this course. It won't add stress to your other courses.
She is real funny and chilled! By far my favorite professor and its an easy A! You do not need the book whatsoever. Everything that's on the exams are on the lecture notes.
Very good class. the professor is great, very understanding and respectable.
Professor Hicks is THE best teacher I've ever taken. Super caring, entertaining, and makes the class very engaging. Definitely would take her again and you are going to learn so much! So many extra credit options and her sweet sense of humor will make you want to go to class. I took her for 2 semesters and drove downtown just to take her. - CL
One of the best professors I've had the pleasure of having so far! She really cares about her students, her lectures are entertaining, and she gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Her PowerPoints are pretty straight forward, but reading the book is crucial to pass the class.
Ms. Hicks is a true GEM. She is very pure and sincere. Sweet, too, and so cute! Here's a breakdown of the class: show up, attendance gets recorded (Tophat), lecture w/ powerpoints, short discussions, a video clip/visual aid (sometimes), class ends. Just utilize the powerpoints given to you, take in-class notes, and engage yourself. Easy A or B.
One of the best teachers I have taken at UTSA. You learn a lot without having to memorize specific dates. The exams aren't difficult at all. Just show up to class and take notes!!
Professor Hicks is SO nice. She's so entertaining and keeps you engaged; definitely not a snoozer. I personally did not purchase the text book and don't think you absolutely NEED it. If you show up to class, pay attention, and take good notes, it's super easy to get an A. She also offers extra credit especially if for some reason your grade sucks.
Prof. Hicks is the best professor I've ever had. I didn't study or open my book once and finished Texas History with a B. Tests are all ridiculously easy, she really sets you up to succeed. Takes attendance with TopHat. She's SUPER sweet, cute and funny, too.
The best teachers teach from the heart, not from the book, so she did! In one word, "amazing teacher", It was actually two words, but she is the ONE you want to take a class with, period.
Prof. Hicks is the best professor at UTSA I've met ever since. She fully respects and cares about everyone. Her lectures are interesting and she shows useful video clips to help students memorizing. There's extra credit opportunities and attendance points are counted as well! It's the class that you do not want to miss!
She is an excellent teacher who clearly loves what she does. The grades are based on the exams and one extra credit essay (and attendance) but the exams are super easy. I just had to read the powerpoints before the exam, but the textbook isn't boring and can provide even more useful information. I 100% recommend her.
Professor Hicks is an amazing teacher. I took her HIS 1053 course because my boyfriend recommended her. She only gave four tests and no homework or quizzes. She thoroughly prepared us for each test and informed us of what would be on the test. Shes also vert sweet and funny. 100% would recommend her to anyone needing a history credit. An easy A!
Professor Hicks is the best history professor I've ever had. History has always been boring and difficult for me, but I have an A in her class. She makes her lectures more interesting with her sense of humor! I highly recommend her if you have to take a history. She usually gives her tests to the SI leader and he'll go over the topics in session.
Take prof. Hicks! Oh & to clarify how SI works is that instructors share parameters of testing material in more detail than what is said in class. However, no exams are ever shared with students in advance. Ultimately, it will be up to you to put in the effort to make a good grade, but as long as you're attentive in class & study, you'll do great!!
She is the sweetest professor I have ever had. She cares about her students and her exams are very easy. She offers A LOT of extra credit and her class is made up of 92% exams and 8% attendance. I wouldn't worry about her exams though, if you pay attention in class it'll be a breeze
Professor Hicks is super nice and her class is very easy to get an A in. I would encourage showing up to her lectures because she mentions a lot of information that will be on the test during class. She gives out extra credit to students who email her articles and facts about lessons in class. I strongly recommend that everyone take her course.
Nicest professor I have ever had. super easy A, didn't even buy the book. Just show up to class and listen to the lectures, I didn't even take notes!
She is great! She gives extra credit her test are easy as long as you go to class and take notes you will pass. She takes tophat but always send in possible test questions before the exam and do the extra credit it will do you good if your not a great test taker
Extremely nice and gives out extra credit like it's candy. so many chances to raise grade up. if anyone fails this class they didn't attend lectures. She clearly states what she wants and takes attendance very seriously. 4 tests. super easy all you have to do is attend class and you are all set to ace this class.
This is the second class I have taken from her. She is a great professor. If you show up, put down your phone and take notes, you will pass. If a 30 y/o veteran can pass this class so can you, NO excuses! She uses top hat for attendance which is 8% of your grade. Great professor!
She cares about you learning, and some students don't. She offered extra credit of proposing test questions or research tied to lecture for a few points, but you have to work for it and she screens the material. She is chill, but takes the material and students seriously. Attendance-taking required by UTSA. Some annoying latecomers. Class big.
There are only 3 tests, a final and Top Hat attendance that counts as 8% of your grade. She offers an enormous amount of extra credit by you attending SI Sessions or turning 5 test questions to her email about a week before a test. Test do get progressively harder though. I didn't buy the book either and made an A. Nice caring teacher
Dr. Hicks tries to reach everyone in class with broad lectures. Listen for emphasis. She is nice, but also very funny. I was afraid this class would be boring.
The book was expensive so she put it on hold for you at the library. What really helped me was reading (less than 1 hr a ch) & Vincent Reyes, SI. I usually hate hist but they made it interesting. Plus, she gave good career advice bc she worked for a company.
I hate history classes, but professor Hicks makes class fun and interesting. The tests are not difficult at all if you show up to class and listen to what she says (and watch videos shown in class). She also gives a TON of extra credit opportunities, because she really does want every student to succeed.
Hicks is sweet and genuinely cares about her students. Go to class and write down everything she says. She likes to put highly specific things mentioned in class on the exams. I didn't use the book. Offers lots of extra credit, but said she's probably not going to offer as much in the future. Easy exams, straight from the powerpoint and lecture.
Can be offensive at times and is unorganized. She might be taking away extra credit so good luck. This class is an easy A but attendance is mandatory.
She got test & paper grades back quickly. She offered extra credit beyond the syllabus & the bumped me from a c 2 b. She was respondive even w huge classes. I learned a lot because she made it fun.
Prof Hicks is a kind, knowledgeable professor. She seemed a little done with students taking advantage of her kindness, and seemed to toughen up a little over the semester. Overall a good experience and well-taught. You should read the book, if you want an A. Without the book, I'd say a solid B is possible.
I highly recommend Prof. Hicks for any class. She gets to the point of what you need to know for the 4 exams so pay attention. The key to getting an A+ is showing up to class and going to SI! She gives a ton of extra credit for going to SI. If you wanna finish a 60 question test in 20 min or less and get at least a 90 on every test, GO TO SI!
She is a good professor. Her class is very easy if you read and pay attention. She brings lots of visual examples of things to class. I would recommend her.
Beyond her enthusiasm for teaching History, she cares about students and likely saved my life. A side mission of hers is alerting students to free counseling to ensure psychological health. UTSA has great counselors, but I found one through work. She is above and beyond. Knowledge of History and the value of students in her course.
Summer classes are intense, but she made it bearable & even adapted the planned pace based on real-time feedback. The DVDs brought the book to life. The combined action was good.
I thought history was dates and places, but really got the stories from "theirstory," as she said some historians call it. I also ended up digging into my family history and found out I am royalty, lol. You will enjoy the course and learn something as well.
Lesli is cool at first but quickly turns sour. Make sure you do all the readings and most importantly, show up to class! Do not even think of using your phone or she will never let it go and write about how our generation is addicted to our phones on every test question. The extra credit makes it an easy A, but I wouldn't recommend her (TX history)
Prof Hicks is very nice and caring. You can tell she loves history, the lectures were sometimes feels like forever and you really have to read. Most of the test questions were board questions, some were from the book, and things she mention in class. Make sure to go to class and take notes/ do the extra credits that will literally save your grade.
She really seems to care about the subject, & also the students in her class. The class itself was easy enough. I didn't even buy the book, but I took notes on what she said (not just copying powerpoint) and read the notes she puts online. She took the time to talk after class if you had questions, and was generous with extra credit opportunities.
I am taking her for Fall '18 because even her 7:30 morning 5-days-a-week 5-week summer class kept me awake! I am NOT a history person. She is fair and asks her students to be grown-up and stay on top of the reading and welcomes input. She uses humor in her lectures and exams to keep what can be a serious atmosphere moving.
Professor Hicks makes history fun and enjoyable to learn. She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities that also expand on what shes lecturing about and helps keep you engaged in the class. She was always open and available to every student. It is advised to attend every class due to the tests being a mix of the text and lecture.
Great teacher, not difficult and gives lots of extra credit. Show up, take notes, reading chapter definitely helps. She gives straight forward tests!
Professor Hicks is an excellent Professor. She is caring and loves when her students show interest in the material. Her tests can sometimes be a bit tricky, but she is very generous with extra credit. If you do the work and show up to class, you will succeed.
Professor Hicks is an amazing professor. She offers ample extra credit opportunities and her lectures are interesting and interactive. She's always willing to offer extra help and answer any questions.
The extra credit questions posed to the class for 1-2 points are fun to research. She isn't automated. She is funny and thoughtful and her tests have a gem or two. We just took or second to last one.
This class was super easy but YOU HAVE TO ATTEND LECTURES. She is such a sweet lady and is very understanding. I never read the textbook but you do have to take notes in class. There are only 3 exam grades so participate in the extra credit given.
Take Professor Hicks, you won't regret it! Even if you are not a History major she is amazing. Her lectures are very informative and the videos are great at showing a visual of what you are learning. She gives a lot of extra credit throughout the course and is very accommodating to busy schedules.
Prof Hicks is super funny. She gets the point of teaching. She doesn't expect you to remember any crazy dates or timelines, just know the main points and you'll pass!
The grade depends on tests and extra credit. She makes you work for it, but you will learn a lot! I loved her class, she made me love history. She's a really nice person and is fair. Go to class and pay attention! You will get the most from her lectures. Tests will be easy if you actually read the book. Don't depend on the powerpoint.
Mrs Hicks is honestly a god sent to UTSA. She deserves 100 crowns in heaven . I took her for Texas history after hating history my whole life. She makes it fun and understandable and is so sweet. If you listen and go to class you can easily get a 100. Would recommend to anyone
One of the easiest and nicest professors ever. Her tests are so easy and during her lectures, she points out what would be good test questions. Just listen to her lectures and at least skim through the textbook and its an easy A. She also gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit.
she is the BEST and sweetest, course is super easy as long as you listen to her lectures.
You learn in this class, but do not always know it! It's like sitting at the kitchen counter and talking, and before you know it, you have heard tales of people you did not know you should care about. Read as good as you can and show up.
She is an amazing professor and teaches in a way that makes you remember the information of different historical events without the purely memorization period. She brings in many visuals that are helpful and relevant to the topics. The tests are usually have lecture and have reading so attending class is important. She gives a lot of extra credit
Always one of the best History prof! I was taking 1053 with the other professor, but I didn't enjoy that class as much as I was taking the first part with Prof Hicks. As an international student, I recommended taking her. She was so passionate and kind to the students, she actually cares about you and wants you to enjoy the class. TAKE HER
This class is different than her U.S. (boring) Only need one credit? Take U.S. Textbook is so long and boring but few questions show up on the test. Tests are so easy and she gives so much extra credit. 10 points extra credit paper to the overall grade. Lectures are funny and she posts the slides for you to review. Take notes on whats said in class
This is an EASY A. But I'm finishing with a D because of many reasons. DO NOT MISS ANY EXAMS. the exams are so easy but I missed the first one which ruined my grade. GO TO CLASS, her lecture is so fun and chill you will think you just need to ask a friend for notes but GO. Review her notes and do ALL the extra credit. I really messed up ):
You'll either love or hate her. She treats you like you're still in elementary school and backs you into a corner to read and pay heavy attention in lecture. If you don't read and remember everything in the reading you'll miss a few questions on her exam. However, she does give lots of extra credit and tests are easy to an extent.
The Best History Professor I ever had
Professor Hicks is great. This was my second class with her. She genuinely wants everyone to learn and is open to any questions or concerns. She also gives out a lot of opportunities for extra credit. You can't really fail the class or get a bad grade if you put in the effort. Tests are based on readings and lectures.
Super awesome professor. Highly recommend. Do your extra credit!!!
Hicks is awesome. She gives out so many EC points and her lectures are worth attending. She's hilarious and her tests are easy.
Prof. Hicks treats you like a grownup. You have to show up and read and take good notes, but she talks to you like a conversation and you learn better. She is not trying to trick. I looked forward to her class, even M-F summer.
This professor is awesome. Her lectures are interesting and she offers massive amounts of extra credit. If she even mentions anything in class you can research it and email her for points. Tests are easy.
I really enjoyed this class! She gives hints on what will be on tests during her lectures so take good notes or at least share with someone who does. Plenty of extra credit opportunities are given, which really helped me. Be on time, & you'll be fine. She's very responsive, passionate about history and makes it interesting.
I dreaded the idea of Texas because I am not from here, but it ended up being interesting and fun, although the text book was hard, so attendance made a difference. She cared, so I began to. She really wanted to hear student stories before, during or after class or by email.
The semester is about to end and I'm pretty sure I will earn an A, but if you are thinking about registering for her, you should. The book is long, but exams are based on both that and lectures and she emphasizes a lot of the material on tests. She cares about students, even if a few cry about having to work. She wants you to learn.
all the notes are on her website so you don't have to worry if you miss a class. she knows her stuff. sweet lady kind of annoying but the class is easy. the tests aren't too hard just make a quizlet.
You read, go to class, listen, and learn. You get stuff that ties into how his repeats itself. She is smart, but not snobby.
This professor is just great overall!! She obviously cares for her students a lot !!! If you have the opportunity to take her GO FOR IT you wont regret it !!!
She is honestly the BEST professor I have ever had. This is the first year of my life I actually understand history! The only grades that go in are your tests, but she gives out SO much extra credit almost daily. I never read a single chapter of the book but I took good notes and only missed 1 or 2 classes in the semester. DEFINITELY take her class
She's an awesome Texas History professor. If you read and go to class the tests will be super easy. It also helps if you have a good SI leader and go to SI sessions. Listen carefully to what she says in class because she uses stories she tells on the tests. I thought this would be a harder class but I really enjoyed it.
She tries hard to make you care about Texas people from a thousand years ago to today. The Si really helps with all the information and the test questions test overall understanding not dates. Not too hard, but not easy either.
This is the second history class I took with Professor Hicks. She is so passionate about history that it rubs off on almost all of her students. I'm so glad that I'm able to take my mandatory history classes with her. I thought I hated history until I took her for Texas and Pre-Columbus to Civil War history. She's the best!
She is a great professor! There is a ton of reading, which I recommend you do cause it will be on the Exams. She brings in artifacts and guest speakers, her class is truly a great place to learn!
Professor Hicks is probably the most human professor I've had, she made the switch from in-person to online very stress-free and coordinated (almost made it seem like it was all planned). We had 4 tests in this course (25% each) and all of them were straight forward and followed the lectures, textbook, and power-points very accurately. 10/10
I've struggled to learn in many of my past history classes, mainly because of they way that they're taught. Professor Hicks is hands down the best history teacher I have ever had. She is a genuinely funny and caring woman who clearly loves her job. She lectures in a way that is interesting and engaging, and helps prepare you in every way for exams.
Absolutely loved her , definitely tried to make every lecture fun and excited:)
Only reason I rated a 4 is because she is a sweet lady. However, the tests are hard because there is no specific review and everything is very general. She writes her own tests so questions are very specific to her LECTURES. Note taking and reading book is key.
She is one of the sweetest professors Ive ever had! She honestly made this class easier with her good spirit and she will do all she can to help you pass the class. You just need to follow the slides, you dont have to rely on the textbook. You should be able to achieve an easy A, while learning some cool new stuff! Take her 10/10!
Professor Hicks in honestly a sweetheart. She is super understanding. Provides multiple opportunities for extra credit, you just have to be willing to do the tasks. She has amazing lectures. I took her for an 8am class and I don't regret it. You will truly be sorry if you don't choose her as you professor!!!
I just took her for my Texas History class and she was amazing!! She keeps the class interesting and doesn't make it too hard. If you show up to class everyday you will pass the class with an A. Her test are also great, the way she lectures is the way she gives test she will make them easy. She makes the class pace based on the students.
I'm an A's and B's student, and not naturally smart. I didn't read the book but got an +A because her exams were always easy. If you study the powerpoints and pay attention to the lectures then you'll be fine. You only have to worry about exams so make sure to do good. She is the sweetest professor I've ever met and my favorite professor so far!
We got the Covid at Spring Break, so the class went online, but she stayed with us through recording lectures and emails and visual aids. She wants you to learn, but be smart about what stories mean. She is smart, but so easy going you dont always realize you just met the best. Like how your mom is and keeps you straight.
I recommend no one takes her. She is really difficult. Her exams are on another level of difficulty. If you are a person that has trouble learning history and is not any help for your major but they just want you to take it, do not take her.
This is the second class but first online. I shared a book but she added LIVESESSION lectures (recorded if you could not make) and added summary to ppt. She was always available before class and after class. She answered all emails quick and once I needed to call. The class is just like meeting somebody for coffee to talk.
She volunteered to offer lectures by Blackboard and recorded them if you missed. You can manage the reading, or learn from posted info. She is personable and smart in how she tells you what matters. I am one of those people that hated History before. Take her!
Took her f2f last year and online this summer and for both she was amazing. I have always loved history, but she adds to it for everybody. The exams ask about what matters and you do not memorize dates. "Significance" is the word and you will get it if you are a history hater too. The book was at library b4 and she helped w digital in Covid.
Her standards were clearly laid out and she evenly applied them. She was very personable and kind. her tests were often about the objects she would bring into class as much as the content in the books. She showed videos in class. Students often only showed up for test but if you stay and do the extra credits you will get an A.
Professor Hicks is an amazing professor. She really cares about her students, and wants everyone to learn. I took her class during the summer, when covid was going on, and she managed so well. Going to lectures is so important, and they are fun! The tests are easy, as long as you go to lecture. TAKE HER!!
Professor Hicks is AMAZING! She's really funny and she cares about you! I definitely recommend reading the textbook and doing ALL of the extra credit that she provides. The exams are not too difficult. SI Sessions help a lot as well as she communicates well with them. DEFINITELY TAKE HER CLASS.
If you don't get an A or higher in this class you aren't doing something right. She gives so much credit there is no reason to not get an A. She is laid back and I liked the class. I took her both for Texas history and US history. Really loved her
We have one more exam. I like that she does not do daily quiz questions, but trusts us to read and think. She responds in live lectures, which she adapted from in-class, like when I took her a year ago. She is there on email or by phone. She is smart, but also funny and nice. She is a storyteller and that helps me learn. She is a fair grader.
Ms. Hicks was a lovely professor! She definitely cares about her students!! She gives the best lectures and makes the lecture so interesting! She is the best History professor I have ever had!! I have learned more about History than ever before. Her tests may be tricky, but you will make an A if you give a little bit of effor!
It seemed hard at first but she lectured up to twice a week live and you could watch recordings. Her tests were based on the readings in the book and posted. She and the TA really helped go over main messages. Knows her stuff and also gets to know students even in a quarantine. I am taking her again in Spring.
Professor Hicks is so sweet. The class is graded based on 3 exams and then the final of course. No homework whatsoever. You can tell she genuinely cares about her students, and she is so easy to approach.
Her voice is nice to hear and she speaks clearly. Her Spring 2021 1083 was fully online. The book is easy to read. There were graded discussions that go off her lectures. Her lectures cover more than the contents of the book, so watch her lectures! The quizzes for the most part are based on the textbook and the rest is from the lectures.
She deserves the world, made history fun!! I recommend 100% for an easy A, only because she teaches so amazingly.
Super sweet professor! No homework just tests and they're pretty easy if you read the chapters or just listen in class.
Amazing professor, most of the work is from the readings and lecture so just show up and do the required reading and it is an easy A! At one point I had some medical reasons I could not make class and she was so helpful through it. So caring and very insightful. I loved her class so much!
Hicks gave us so many chances for extra credit and also showed us a lot of family relics/antiques. A very good lecturer and the tests are pretty easy too. Not too much to complain about at all. Take her if you can, she's absolutely worth it.
Loved her!!
This professor is so sweet and understanding, this was my first time passing a history class.
The class is more like a conversation. We looked a broad concepts. That helps me.
You are graded by a few tests and they are easy. I got three As on four tests. You also get a lot of extra credit options as well. In point just study before exams and you will just do well.
I really recommend her as a professor. Exams are easy, even if you do not read the textbook and just go to the lectures you will do amazing. Gives extra credit opportunities, is kind, funny and gracious. Only graded by the four exams. Also view Black Board content before the exams!
She teaches history from the perspective of understanding the concepts of what happened rather than memorizing facts and figures. Reading is helpful but not entirely necessary; however, showing up to class is very important. She is understanding and kind but rigid so as not to be taken advantage of. Show up, pay attention, you'll do great!
Take her! The most amazing and caring Professor. Lots of extra credit opportunities as well.
She goes over the material in great detail. The test is exactly like her lectures and the textbook which is easy to read. She gives out plenty of extra credit throughout the semester.
She can get into soft spoken rambles that drag on and can make it hard to focus. Her first exams are very easy but increase in difficulty as the semester goes on. She doesn't take attendance, but she puts questions on exams related to videos she only shows during random classes or things she's said only during class that is not in your books.
Great lectures! She provides a good amount of extra credit that can help your overall grade for this class.Very kind and respectful professor.
She is so amazing, her lectures are very interesting and she is so accommodating!
By far the worst instructor I have ever had. I am not sure if it is because the class is online, however, this is no excuse. The instructor does not have a grading rubric, nor does she read what you write. I was told that my discussion had plagiarism and when checking with turnitin it was a quote that was cited correctly. She also does not respond.
Professor Hicks might be the kindest person I've ever met. Her lectures are fascinating.
Lovely professor, she was super kind and helpful. She really cares about her students, she offers a LOT of chances to do extra credit. Graded by 4 tests, she makes them pretty easy and tells you what will be on it during class. GO TO CLASS, read the chapters, and do the extra credit and it's an easy A. I hate history, but her class was so fun.
She provides lots of options for extra credit. Her lectures are amazing, she often provides additional fun facts over the current topic (recipes, books, artifacts, etc). Her tests are very easy if you read the chapters and attended class. Even if you didn't, you'll probably pass the tests. She's easy to get in contact with and is super sweet
Most the sweetest professor ever. Attend the lectures and read the textbook and you will be set for the exams!! The first exam is super easy however 2nd,3rd, and 4th you need to study the material to get a good grade. Gives out a lot of extra credit opportunities.
She super sweet and you can really tell she loves what she is doing. You will not get any homework, your grades rely on your tests. Gives a LOT of extra credit. Posts all the lectures online for everyone. Even though recommended by her, textbook not needed, save money.
i love prof hicks and her class was not too bad. she posts everything online but you should attend the lectures bc she goes through a lot of what the test will have! shes great and super caring.
Overall Couse: Mrs. Hicks will ask you to get a yellow tx his. book but honestly, you don't even need it. I rented it from Chegg but I've never read it and I've passed all of the exams. The teach is very nice, caring, and FUNNY. She keeps the lectures entertaining. I def recommend taking her!! :)
Professor Hicks is so great! I'm not much of a fan of history, but her lectures are fun and interesting. She gives lots of extra credit, which is amazing; but really, you're only being graded on your four exams. As long as you show up to class, study the lecture slides, and look at the items on content, you should definitely make an A!
Professor Hicks is the best professor you can take. She gives out a lot of extra credit provided you do them, basically free and easy points that count towards your final and tests. The tests are mainly about lectures in class, but don't worry they are pretty informative and interesting. Overall, take this course you will not be disappointed!
Very chill teacher has lots of extra credit opportunities and she is very caring of her students. For someone who never read a chapter from the textbook, attended all class lectures, and only did her exams I ended up with a B+, would definitely recommend her course.
She is a great teacher, very caring and wants you to succeed. There was no homework whatsoever for the class which means you need to do good on the 4 tests. But if you do bad on a test she provides tons of easy, optional extra credit assignments to pick the grade back up. 10/10
LOVED Prof Hicks. Made history fun and interesting especially for someone who normally doesn't like history. Graded just on four in-person exams with tons of opportunities for extra credit. GO TO LECTURES! Easy tests and gives hints during her lectures about what she may put on the test. If you go to class and do your reading you'll easily get an A
I absolutely loved her and her class. She was the best professor I had my first year of college. Theres only 4 tests in 1043 but has discussions for extra credit. Her lectures aren't for attendance but quizlet and the videos she has was what I used to study. She responds to emails very quickly and genuinely cares for her students. 100000/10!
I love Prof Hicks!!! She truly cares about her students and makes sure that everyone is doing well mentally and physically! She always has snacks before her class and makes sure to talk to the students before class!! Her lectures are pretty straight forward and her exams are really easy!! You don't need the textbook but it would definitely help!!!!
i can never recommend this woman enough!!! she only grades on exams but they are not hard at all as long as you have an idea of the information in the chapters, and she has so many extra credit opportunities. just attend her lectures and take a little bit if notes and you'll be fine in her class
I LOVED Professor Hicks! She is a fantastic professor who really cares about her students! Her lectures are always super interesting, and she makes them fun by adding different jokes etc. There are only 4 tests, but she gives out A LOT of extra credit and discussion posts. I definitely recommend taking her she is amazing!
Professor Hicks is amazing!! I am not a history major but she made the topics easy to understand. There are only four exams and plenty of extra credit opportunities. You don't need to buy the textbook, as you can borrow it from the library, and she makes all of the course material very accessible. If I could I would take her again!
My most favorite professor if you can take her multiple times I HIGHLY RECOMMEND her!! Lectures are lengthy but they are always interesting and she usually will mention what will be on your test. Offers extra credit online and in class. If you don't have the textbook it doesn't really matter. Tests are easy to pass, she responds quickly to emails.
This course was genuinely so enjoyable. I don't like History but Professor Hicks made it easy so that was great. Just show up and you'll do fine
Really nice and very helpful.
She is a sweet lady who truly loves her job. Her lectures were entertaining and she always had props to help you understand everything. Gave lots of extra credit, like at least 75+ points. I personally didn't use the textbook, although it was "required". 4 test/no hw but the test are very easy. Take her if you can, you'll learn a lot, so easy too!
She was a great professor
Professor Hicks was amazing! The amount of Extra Credit was awesome too! Her lectures always included props and they were fun to attend. Had a great time in this class :)
I took this during the summer, and it was a good class. My low grade is because I submitted a test too late, otherwise I would've made an A. She is an extremely nice professor. It was convenient to watch the class at anytime, and she has a lot of extra credit that you should definitely take advantage of (I didn't :(). Only one textbook required!!!
Prof. is amazing and SO hilarious, her jokes during lecture really make me laugh. Her teaching is also very brilliant and she has helped me gain much more interest in learning about history. SHE IS THE BEST. and she gives us candy before class
As someone who has always hated anything to do with history, she definitely made it more amusing to me. She is so nice, sweet, and understanding. She offers a lot of extra credit for the most random things and it's amazing. She always likes to bring snacks for the class and her exams are almost always easy.
This class really only requires you to show up to class everyday and you'll be ready for the test.
LOVE Hicks! The only grades you get come from the test. She has no other regular assignments, everything on canvas is all optional and all worth extra credit. Unless you bomb every test and never fill out the few sentence extra credit assignments, you'll pass, most likely with a really high grade. She's also really funny and has great humor!
It was so much fun going to class and seeing her every Tuesday/Thursday.
Great professor! Very kind and caring, sometimes brings candy. I found the class quite easy, but if you are not confident in your test taking skills, I do not recommend. This class is VERY test heavy, however she does have a ton of extra credit opportunities and the tests are fairy easy as long as you go to class.
No homework, just exams and extra credit. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! It helps out a lot. I suck at history but still managed to get an A and its all because of the extra credit. Exams are roughly 50 questions and they are kind of dificult. She will give curves if needed. Overall amazing teacher with a great attitude.
She talked about the characters of early Am history but also the character needed for historians. She repeated we each are historians in our own way. Inclusive and bummed where history falls short for groups. Chapters accessible and assignments not punitive, but helped prepare me. Tbh, I would have gotten an A if I had done the family history.
Professor Hick is the best! As someone who doesn't like history, this class was very manageable. Would definitely recommend her class! 10/10 professor
Professor Hicks is THE history professor you want at UTSA. She gives students candy to encourage them to do their best, provides endless extra credit opportunities, and the class is only graded by 4 tests. This sounds intimidating but you'll be glad to have NO homework for this class. Show up to class and ace the tests!
Super silly and passionate about subject
Don't think too much, just take her as long as you can! Attending all classes will be beneficial for you only. She does say to read the textbook, but you can still get an A if you don't. She brings candies in every class. She is caring and considerate. This is your easy class. You'll not only get an A but actually learn history like never before!
I took both history semesters and I loved each of them. Professor Hicks is so funny, genuine, and intelligent; def my favorite professor this year. Attendance was not mandatory, but the lectures contained answers to the tests. Plus, I don't know why you wouldn't want to go in the first place; she's very engaging and constantly gives extra credit.
Professor Hicks made this history class genuinely enjoyable. The lectures were engaging, and assignments were helpful for preparing for tests. I found tools like unstuckstudy AI super useful for study prep - it saved me a lot of time. Overall, an easy A if you show up to class.
Professor Hicks is one of the best teachers I have ever had, her generosity is outstanding, and you feel like she knows you and genuinely wants you to succeed. One of my biggest problems out of high school was connecting to the Educators, Professor Hicks makes you feel like you have known her for years. One of the best people I have met at UTSA.
Great teacher!! Took her online in the summer for a 5 week term and it was not difficult to keep up. She had zooms but also recorded the lectures so attendance was not mandatory. SOOO much extra credit! Will be taking her again in the Spring in person!
She is very nice and super sweet. She is very textbook and lecture-heavy and has an old traditional way of doing tests. Be ready to study, read, and attend lectures to understand. Attendance isn't mandatory but she likes to throw some shots at people who don't come or are always on their phones. Good professor, but personally wouldn't take again.
This class is probably one of the more traditional ones left since online courses are available. This is my 2nd time taking her courses. It's lecture heavy and while no attendance is taken, I'd say it's important to not miss lecture. In person traditional university exams are based on lecture and textbook. Personally I love her energy and her class.
Best professor I've ever had. I'm speechless. I'll always remember her.
Professor Hicks has a very easy structured class with plenty of extra credit opportunities all throughout the semester. She makes her lectures interesting and interactive which is hard to do in a history class. Her tests are strait from the lectures so going to class everyday is very helpful but not mandatory, and she is good about emails.
Amazing professor who genuinely cares about students and wants to see them succeed. She has a bit of a scatterbrained teaching style, but lectures were always engaging to attend. Grade consists of four tests weighed equally with a plethora of extra credit opportunities. Textbook isn't required but really helps with studying and for extra credit.
Professor Hicks was a great professor. The class is based on four test grades, so take advantage of extra credit opportunities to create a buffer. Tests start easy but get harder as the semester progresses. She recommends a textbook, but I didn't use one and still earned an A+
Engaging lectures, ties in real-world events to guide understanding. Only takes four grades, but offers tens of extra credit opportunities. Exams mainly focus on themes and in-class attendance questions. Textbook is free and encouraged, though not mandatory to pass class. Inclusive to all and polite. Genuinely kind and is obvious she cares.
An amazing and sweet person. The course is very test heavy, but offers lots of extra credit. Very engaging and makes the lectures really enjoyable and interesting even if you don't like history. Also brings candy every day. You can tell how much she cares about her students' success, and I'm taking her class again in the spring!
She's awesome and really funny honestly. I have taken her twice and I would take her a third time if I can. Only thing that can concern you is that there's only 4 major tests in the course that count to 25% each for your grade but there's so much extra credit that you'll be fine. Just attend lectures and youll be chillinnnn
Her undying passion for history is palpable and very contagious! I never realized how much I loved history until her class. She adores it when students investigate deeper about the content we went over in class and rewards extra credit constantly. Take advantage of it because there is no homework, only four exams (But that was a blessing to me!)
Professor talks a lot off topic and doesn't seem to talk about any of the subjects in a way for you to learn. Reading the book is ur best bet. AI is unacceptable to her even if used as a tool.
Love Prof Hicks. Attend the lectures and read the textbook and it's an easy A. There are 4 exams and use the extra credit to your advantage. The lectures are my favorite due to the real world examples and engagement within them.
This professor's lectures were soo bad. She basically would ramble for 2 hours. She doesn't take attendance but it gets really hard to go to class b/c her lectures are so long and boring. However, there are only 4 exams and no other assignments, and exams are about 90% based on her lectures and questions are asked in a confusing format
Best History professor I've ever met.
This professor is so generous with helping students and giving extra credit that if you get below an "-A" then you tried to fail. Probably the easiest history professor to actually learn history from and not want to fall asleep in class.
Professor Hicks is one of the kindest I've met at UTSA. She really cares about her students, lectures are easy and smooth. She gives a LOT of extra credit and exams are pretty easy.
Lesli Hicks is my favorite profesor, she is very caring and makes this cass very easy. I was able to get an A- without reading the textbook and only barely taking notes. there are no required homework assignment, but many easy opportunities for easy extra credit. You should definitely take her class, you won't regret it.

Best professor I have taken. Her lectures are very entertaining and kept me focused, but if you want a straight forward lecture this might not be the right professor. She loves to tell stories or often gets sidetracked which kept me focused but might not be for others. Offers lots of extra credit and only has 4 exams.
I took her 5-week summer course, and I would definitely recommend this class. Your grade only consists of four test grades plus any extra credit assignments that you do. Each week she offers roughly 4-5 extra credit assignments that you can earn up to 5 points on each. Such a nice professor who really cares for her students.
Professor Hicks is passionate about her work and brings lots of personal experience to class exceeding the text book. This ultimately makes her classes more pleasurable and passing quizzes a breeze. Also if you throw yourself into the class there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Absolute masterclass course materials and lectures. Only 4 required grades being the 4 exams and she provides plenty of extra credit. She's so kind and loves to hear everyone's stories on history.
Professor Hicks is truly an amazing professor. All the assignments are for extra credit only. So if you don't do them, your grade will not be affected. The only required grades are the 4 exams, all online and proctored. TRUST ME, the exams are super easy and can be done by just reading the PowerPoints.
She's the nicest professor I've met, and loves to keep everyone engaged. Her physical props of history, and wonderful lectures are unmatched.
I attended 2 lectures the entire semester and always studied for exams hours before. I ended up with a 103. If you're looking for an engaging course Hicks is not for you. If you're just looking to get the credit/GPA boost this course is for you. Hicks uploads the lecture slides to Canvas so there is really no point in attending lecture.
Genuinely the best professor I've had. Her lectures are so engaging and she'd always start off each lecture with candy for us to take. She makes it very clear what's expected of you and to be honest you could probably fly by without getting the text book (aka what I did). So much extra credit is available even though its probably not needed. 10/10!
